Happy Mondays announce first North American tour dates in 14 years

Performing 'Pills 'N' Thrills and Bellyaches' in its entirety

happy mondays vegas tour

Happy Mondays will return to North America for the first time since 2009 next year, where they will perform their 1990 album ‘Pills ‘N’ Thrills and Bellyaches’ in full.

The shows, announced today (October 24), will see the band perform at Terminal 5 in New York City on March 25 and the Belasco Theatre in Los Angeles on March 28. At the latter date, the band will be joined by DJ Paul Oakenfold as a special guest. Tickets will go on sale this Friday (October 28) at 10am local time – find New York tickets here , and LA tickets here .

These shows will mark the band’s first shows on the continent in nearly 14 years. In 2009, the band toured through the US and Canada on a co-headliner with the Psychedelic Furs . The shows will also mark Happy Mondays’ first shows outside of the UK since the passing of founding bassist Paul Ryder, who passed away in July.

Since his passing, Happy Mondays have played several UK festivals with a stand-in session bassist. They have also released an EP, ‘Tart Tart’ , in tribute to their late bandmate.

Happy Mondays have performed ‘Pills ‘N’ Thrills and Bellyaches’ on several tours over the years, most recently as part of a tour in Australia and New Zealand circa 2019. Originally released in November of 1990, the band’s third album was also their most commercially successful.

It peaked at number four on the UK album charts, and went on to achieve Platinum certification.  NME  also ranked the album 82nd on its list of The 100 Greatest British Albums Ever , as well as 413th on its list of The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time .

Earlier this month, Happy Mondays frontman Shaun Ryder performed his first solo show in 11 years. The singer performed at Manchester’s Factory 251 , with all proceeds from the show going to mental health charity Mind. Along with performing several songs by his side project Black Grape , Ryder also gave live debuts to songs from his 2021 solo album ‘Visits From Future Technology’.

"Gone are the days when a chauffeur-driven car with weighing scales in the boot for drugs would be waiting outside the Top of the Pops studio." Happy Mondays/Black Grape's Shaun Ryder on "changing times" in the music industry

National treasure Shaun Ryder thinks the music industry isn't what it once was

Black Grape, 2023

Happy Mondays/ Black Grape /Mantra Of The Cosmos frontman Shaun Ryder  has released a new book Shaun Ryder: Happy Mondays, And Fridays, And Saturdays, And Sundays , and given his thoughts on the changing face of the music industry. “Been clean 21 years," the singer tells The Telegraph in a new [paywalled] interview, "but the public still wants to hear about the drugs, drugs, drugs, rock ’n’ roll and sex. I’m not sure what it’s like for young lads entering the business now but gone are the days when a chauffeur-driven car with weighing scales in the boot for drugs would be waiting outside the Top of the Pops studio for us.” “If a lad, or a lass, in a band wants to have a bit of fun with groupies it’ll be all over social media before you know it. You can’t hide nothing. Changed times.”

In 2024, Ryder isn't just an indie rock star, but also a TV star, appearing alongside his best mate Bez as a regular guest on Channel 4's long-running and unfailingly popular TV show  Gogglebox .  “These young kids watch us on the iPad,” he tells The Telegraph , “and start wondering who these two old bastards are: by the time the programme ends, they’ve downloaded all our albums.”

Earlier this year, talking to Louder , Ryder, a former runner-up on the bafflingly popular I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here, mused upon his new-found status as a national treasure, and declared, “I'll take national treasure over being called a smackhead, crackhead loser.”

The singer also revealed that he was working on the debut album from Mantra Of The Cosmos, who also feature Ride's Andy Bell, Brix Smith, Zac Starkey and Bez.

“It's kinda mad Pink Floyd, dancey, rocky stuff, and some of the tunes are 15 minutes long,” he said. “We've got 10 or 11 tunes at the moment, and its good, it's cool, but we're not rushing it.”

Shaun Ryder: Happy Mondays, And Fridays, And Saturdays, And Sundays is on sale now.

The singer is undertaking a spoken word tour to promote the book from September. Fans have beenn told that they can “look forward to a carnival of excess, wild tales, and improbable truths, as they enjoy the talents of a unique rock'n'roll star dubbed Britpop's answer to WB Yeats.”  Full details of the tour are available here .

The Happy Mondays have been a beautiful disaster since day one but somehow they have tumbled their way through three decades and have left a stunning legacy behind them.

Discovered at, where else but Manchester’s Mecca of Mess, The Hacienda, the band were picked from the line-up of a battle of the bands and taken under their wing by Tony Wilson. Fronted by Shaun Ryder and his sidekick Bez, the band released their debut album in 1987 on the legendary Factory Records, including on it the anthem ’24 hour party people’, a track that’s title went on to inspire a film of the same name that recounted the Factor Records glory days and all the chaos that came with it.

The torch-bearers of Manchester’s drug induced ‘Baggy’ Sound, the band rounded out the decade with two more albums, ‘Bummed’ and ‘Pills 'n' Thrills and Bellyaches’ which was a platinum success for the band. With the group now being the walking embodiment of Rave culture, they were seen as a popular commodity worldwide and began touring extensively.

All this cultural opulence came to a destructive peak with the disastrous recording sessions for 1992’s ‘Yes Please’. In short they went to Barbados, took too many drugs, recorded an album with no vocals and bankrupted Factory records in the process.

It was the perfect ending for a band whose career up till that point had been defined by chaos but as the band split up, it left behind an enduring legacy. A key influence on other important Manchester acts like the Stone Roses, the band have also become the headline act of one of the most exciting times in British music. I guess maybe Tony Wilson was right when he said that “Shaun Ryder is on a par with W.B. Yeats as a poet”.

Live reviews

One might assume that the Happy Mondays make a better story than a band, and at points in their storied history they definitely have. Take for example, how the unbelievable tales surrounding their ill-fated recording sessions in Jamaica (including Shaun Ryder holding the master tapes of his own album to ransom while demanding that Factory Records buy them off him before listening to them) only lead to the release of the critical and commercial disaster “Yes Please!” before the band split up for the second time the following year. However, time and hefty tax bills heal all wounds, and while the musical fashion of nostalgic reunion tours may be waning it does still mean that acts that are getting back together are better bands than they were in their heyday. While their legend may follow them around just as much if not more than their classic albums on stage, the band can still slay any audience they’re put in front of with their loose limbed indie-funk.

Even without band mascot Bez hurling himself around the stage with his ever-present maracas for many of the songs (arthritis curtails even the freakiest of dancin’), the Mondays have got to the point where they can turn any venue they play into a heaving club during the height of the Madchester era. At this point they are a true outlier in British music, as few acts are playing that style of music and fewer still playing it at the level the Mondays are at, so every time one has the opportunity to see them you can also bet that they’ll be playing to a crowd that truly believes in the band. It’s rare to witness an audience that’s willing to give themselves to any band, for some it’ll be to relive their glory days, for others, it’ll be to experience them for the first time if they weren’t around at its peak. It takes a special band to create that effect on people, and the Mondays do that every time they play. So put aside your preconceptions and witness the original Party People do what they do best as soon as possible.

During their heyday Manchester rockers the Happy Mondays were equally known for their controversy as their music. They have disbanded and reformed four times yet since 2012 they have been noted to be performing stronger than ever as friendships seem to have been well and truly incarnated and the rapport onstage is visibly improved. They tend to play a 'greatest hits' of such with majority of material lifted from 'Pills 'n' Thrills and Bellyaches' yet there is still opportunity to showcase newer songs too.

You still get the aggressive frontman mannerisms of Shaun Ryder and the bizarre dancing/percussion of Mark "Bez" Berry but without all the substances means the band manage to finish sets now compared to years past. This is good news for the fans as they have some real brit pop gems including 'Step On' and 'Loose Fit'. These sound great with piercing percussion and thumping drums which has the crowds dancing and jumping beneath the stage to these nostalgic vibes. Happy Mondays did not achieve the same impact as the likes of Blur or Oasis, yet they still attain some kind of importance and the live show is a good demonstration of this.

A fantastic Happy Mondays gig - whilst it may be 20+ years since their peak, they still know how to rock a room and were on form in Leicester.

Good to see Bez up on stage, although he only has the energy for a song or two at a time these days.

Great to see them play all the classics, so all in all a great gig!

Enjoyed the night at the Happy Monday's gig but sound quality was a bit off till about halfway through the gig. I must admit I liked Black Grape at the Beach Ballroom more, sorry.

I attended The Cult on Monday night and it was fantastic, there was no issue with the sound that night.

Fantastic gig, what a Sunday to hear the Mondays ! Had my melon twisted, it was wrote for luck, hallelujah !! The band was bang on point and the crowed lapped up the 25th year anniversary in style, I hope they return soon and bring the madchester back to South Wales. Diolch yn Fawr.

They were great - realitevly short and sweet (played all of Pill, thrills n bellyaches) but that’s all you want. Shaun Ryder is a genius front man - stands, delivers, makes smart arse remarks and hardly moves (well he does have Bez to do the moving for him)

What a great gig, from Shaun Ryder's opening line: 'you look like a bunch of toffs' (the gig was part of a racing festival) through to a compelling and chaotic Step On, this gig was fun from first moment to last. Great idea playing here.

Loved the whole evening.

All the acts that performed were great. The drink prices once in were ok for a gig.

Happy Monday were great. Good to see Bez hasn't learnt anymore dance moves in 20+ years.

The Kings of Shiiine On weekender leave another crowd in awe. Their status as one of the greatest bands ever is assured. 30 year party people. No days off for these icons.

Great show. Vocals and dancing (Bez) were superb. The venue is pretty good too. You can get really close to the stage without any problems. I needed thirty words, there.

Happy Mondays to 'go to bed for years' after tour

Happy Mondays will be "going to bed for about three or four years" after an upcoming UK tour, leader singer Shaun Ryder has said

The 61-year-old said he would be taking a break after the Been There Done That Tour in March, and would look to work on other projects.

He said he was "really looking forward" to the tour, which would be "the last for a while".

The band had been doing shows "constantly" since 2012, he said.

"So it's now time to make this the last tour... so I can concentrate on [bands] Black Grape and Mantra Of The Cosmos and a few things," he added.

Ryder co-founded rock group Black Grape in the 1990s and the band released debut album It's Great When You're Straight...Yeah in 1995.

Speaking about the possibility of retirement, Ryder said the band would stop when they wanted to, "or when you can't walk on stage any more".

"When we were young men, you made an album, you toured it for three years, came back, made another album, and toured that for three years.

"So you'd do that for years and years and years and you'd go touring, you learn what touring is about.

"Now, I don't do that. I mean, we do a lot of festivals all over the place with the Mondays and Black Grape - we just toured Australia.

"I do it at my own pace now. I tour when I want to at my own pace."

Speaking about the upcoming dates, he said: "Manchester's always mad. We have more guestlists then we have fans in Manchester... it gets a bit mad."

There will be shows in Glasgow, Bristol, Manchester, Brighton and London, with the group set to perform hits including 24 Hour Party People, Step On, and Hallelujah.

Happy Mondays signed to Tony Wilson's Factory Records in the late 1980s and blended their love of funk, rock, psychedelia and house with sounds from the UK's emerging rave scene.

The band, who are now without Ryder's bassist brother Paul, who died in 2022 aged 58 , finished a tour of Australia and New Zealand in October.

Jack Nicklaus wasn’t necessarily happy doing the PGA Tour a favor.

The 18-time major champion and winner of 73 PGA Tour titles agreed to go along with a new plan that would move his annual Memorial Tournament in Dublin, Ohio a week later — and right before the US Open — to help with the PGA Tour’s signature event series.

“We would prefer the other week,” Nicklaus said Tuesday at a news conference, per Sports Illustrated . “However, we are here this week because the Tour asked us to help them out. They said they had a thing they wanted to do and that the players had asked for and that would we help it out, and we said yes, that we would do that this week.

“But we said we would review it after this tournament and we’ll figure out how we’re going to settle the schedule after that, and I said that discussion is under way.”

Jack Nicklaus of the United States tips his cap on the 18th hole as he participates in the Folds of Honor Greats of Golf during the second round of the Insperity Invitational at The Woodlands Golf Club on May 4, 2024.

The tournament, which is in its 49th year and will run from June 6-9, has been traditionally played two weeks prior to the US Open and the week after Memorial Day.

Nicklaus mentioned the tournament has also been tied to the holiday in the past.

“Yesterday, was normally a very big day gallery-wise for us because it was Memorial Day, and we had maybe a thousand people here yesterday,” he said. “From the sponsor’s standpoint, I think that they get into board meetings and kids’ graduations and so forth, so that’s maybe not as advantageous.

Viktor Hovland shakes the hand of Jack Nicklaus and after beating Denny McCarthy in a playoff to win the 2023 Memorial Tournament.

“But that won’t make any difference. We’re going to have a good tournament this week either way, in spite of all the different things. And as I say, we did that as a favor and the Tour asked us to do that, and we said yes. So we’ve always been a supporter of the Tour. We want to try to continue to support what is best for the Tour, but we also want to support what’s best for the Memorial Tournament. So that is to be determined.”

The new schedule idea was created to prevent regular tournaments from being stuck between two signature events or any majors.

In 2023, the Memorial was played before the RBC Canadian Open. This year, the tournaments switched spots on the calendar with Robert MacIntyre winning in Toronto last week.

“The Golden Bear” didn’t take to this, advocating for the same rest between major tournaments that he once had.

Jack and Barbara Nicklaus stand behind the trophy following the final round of the Memorial Tournament on June 4, 2023.

“Let’s put it this way. When I played, I would rarely play a week before any major championship,” Nicklaus said. “So I’m asked to be part of putting on a golf tournament in a week that I would never play. That, to me, is the essential part from my standpoint.”

Nicklaus’ tournament is one of the eight signature events of the PGA Tour this year with reduced playing fields and purses reaching $20 million — with the winner getting $4 million.

The tournament was first played in 1976 at the Muirfield Village Golf Club.
