Anthargange Caves Trek: A Complete Guide

The vast and diverse landscape of India offers a plethora of trekking opportunities, and the Anthargange trek in the Kolar district of Karnataka is undoubtedly one of the hidden gems waiting to be discovered.

Nestled amidst the enchanting hills and rocky terrain, the Anthargange trek offers a perfect blend of spirituality, adventure, and natural beauty.

This blog aims to take you on a virtual journey to Anthargange, exploring its mysterious caves, challenging trails, and the unique experience it offers to trekkers and adventure enthusiasts.

About Anthargange Trek

Anthargange is a hill range in the Shathashrunga range of Karnataka, about 70 kilometers from Bangalore. It is a popular trekking destination for its scenic beauty, challenging trails, and rich history. The name "Anthargange" means "innerspring" in Kannada, and the hill is home to a number of natural springs, as well as caves and temples.

The Anthargange trek is a moderate to difficult trek, with a total distance of about 5 kilometers. The trail begins at the Anthargange temple and ascends through a series of rocky boulders and dense forests.

The first part of the trek is relatively easy, but the difficulty level increases as you approach the summit.

The final stretch of the trek is a steep climb up a series of steps, which can be challenging for some hikers.

Trekking Route

As you ascend, you will encounter fascinating volcanic rock formations, small caves, and crevices. The trek involves some climbing, crawling through narrow gaps, and exploring the caves, which are the highlights of the Anthargange trek.

The trek is of moderate difficulty and takes around 2 to 3 hours to reach the top, depending on your pace and exploration time. The views from the top are breathtaking, especially during sunrise and sunset.

What is the best time for Anthargange Trek?

The best time to undertake the Anthargange trek in Kolar district, Karnataka, India, is during the cooler months, which are typically from October to March. During this period, the weather is more pleasant, with milder temperatures and lower humidity, making it ideal for trekking and outdoor activities.

Winter (October to February):

This is the peak season for trekking Anthargange due to the pleasant weather. Temperatures are relatively cool, ranging from 15°C to 25°C during the day, and it can get colder during the night. The clear skies and mild weather provide excellent trekking conditions, making it a popular time for both experienced trekkers and beginners.

Spring (March):

Early March can still offer good trekking weather, similar to the winter months. Towards the end of March, the temperatures may start to rise, and it can get slightly warmer during the daytime. Overall, it is still a suitable time for trekking, but the weather may become warmer as the month progresses.

Summer (April to June):

Summer months can be quite hot and uncomfortable for trekking in Anthargange. Daytime temperatures can soar well above 30°C, and the rocks can become scorching hot. Trekking during the summer is not recommended due to the harsh conditions. It is better to plan a trek early in the morning.

Monsoon (July to September):

The monsoon season brings heavy rainfall to the region, making the terrain slippery and hazardous for trekking. The rocks can become slippery, Trekking during the monsoon is not advisable for safety reasons.

My Trek Experience

I planned this trek along with one of my friends in Bangalore, So I took the trek permit in advance from the Karnataka eco-tourism website as it is mandatory for this trek.

We started from Bangalore early in the morning around 4:30 so that we can reach the base of the Anthargange trek before 6 AM. The road condition is very good from Bangalore to Kolar so we reached on time without any hassle.

After reaching the base point of the Anthargange trek we parked our vehicle at the dedicated parking area by paying 50 INR. Afterward, we started our trek journey, Initially, we need to climb a few stairs and cover a 500-meter distance to reach the actual trek start point where we have shown our trek permit to the forest guard, and from there, we have been assigned a trek guide.

The trek route is easy and we didn't face any difficulty but as we are doing this trek in the month of July due to monsoon season we could see lots of greenery in our trail. After covering some distance we started to see big rocks in our trail which made our trek journey exciting.

After covering more distance reached in front of the caves, that was the best part of this trek. We waited for some time for our trek guide as we were quite ahead of our fellow trekkers. Once the trek guide came we entered the caves and it is one of the most thrilling and adventurous parts I felt in the entire trek journey.

There was no light so we need to use our phone flashlight to see the way ahead, ad the passage is soo narrow that only one person can move at a time. With the help of the trek guide, we were able to come out of that cave and we all felt relieved and happy.

For the final viewpoint, we went ahead from the caves to reach a point where we need to climb the rock to reach the top viewpoint and after we reached there it was truly a breathtaking view we experienced. We captured the beauty of the place by taking some photos and videos.

I tried capturing the views with my drone but it was too windy at the top that I couldn't able to fly for more than a few minutes. We relaxed and had our snacks and started our return journey afterwards.

Anthargange trek in Kolar was truly one of a kind trek with mysterious caves which I have experienced near Bangalore. It is a mesmerizing blend of adventure and natural beauty. Its mystical caves, challenging trails, and breathtaking landscapes offer an unforgettable experience for trekkers and adventure enthusiasts.

Tips for Trekkers

Before setting off on the Anthargange trek, here are some essential tips to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience:

Proper Footwear: Wear comfortable trekking shoes with a good grip to navigate the rocky terrain safely.

Carry Sufficient Water: As the trek can be physically demanding, ensure you carry an ample supply of water to stay hydrated throughout the journey.

Pack Light: Keep your backpack light with only essential items like snacks, a first aid kit, and a flashlight for night treks.

Follow the Guide: If you're new to the area, it's advisable to hire a local guide who knows the terrain well. They can help you navigate through tricky spots and provide valuable insights into the history and significance of the place.

Respect Nature: While trekking, ensure you leave no trace behind and respect the natural surroundings. Avoid littering and damaging the rock formations.

Night Trek Precautions: If you opt for a night trek, make sure to carry extra layers of clothing as it can get chilly at higher altitudes during the night.

I have covered a couple more treks near Bangalore which you can explore Best Treks near Bangalore.

Thank you for reading!

Exploring the Anthargange Trek: A Journey Through Unique Rock Formations and Caves

Nestled within the picturesque landscapes of the Kolar district in Karnataka, India, lies the captivating destination of Anthargange . Renowned among adventure enthusiasts and nature lovers, this trekking paradise offers an exhilarating experience through its unique rock formations and mysterious caves. As of my last update in September 2021, Anthargange continues to allure trekkers from far and wide. However, it’s essential to stay informed about any changes, including entry fees and other pertinent details, before embarking on your journey.

Unveiling the Wonders of Anthargange

Anthargange is a testament to the astonishing beauty that nature can create over millennia. The region’s distinctive rock formations stand as silent sentinels, each telling a story of the forces that shaped them. The trek to these formations isn’t just a physical journey; it’s an exploration of geological history. The interplay of light and shadow on the rugged surfaces adds an element of mystery to the experience, making every step a delight for the senses.

Delving into the Enigmatic Caves

One of the highlights of the Anthargange trek is the opportunity to explore its enigmatic caves. These natural cavities have beckoned curious adventurers for generations. The darkness within, coupled with the thrill of discovery, evokes a sense of wonder reminiscent of childhood tales. As you traverse the labyrinthine passages, the sound of your footsteps mingles with the whispers of the wind, creating an atmosphere that’s both eerie and enchanting.

The Trekking Experience

The trekking trail at Anthargange offers varying levels of difficulty, making it accessible to both beginners and experienced trekkers. For those seeking a mild adventure, the initial stretches provide a leisurely walk amidst lush greenery. As you progress, the incline gradually intensifies, challenging your stamina and determination. The reward, however, is unparalleled: panoramic vistas that stretch as far as the eye can see, rewarding your efforts in full measure.

Practical Considerations and Planning

Before planning your expedition to Anthargange, it’s crucial to gather up-to-date information about the entry fees and any other relevant details. Tourism policies, guidelines, and fees may evolve, so it’s advisable to consult local authorities or official tourism websites closer to your intended visit. Equipping yourself with the necessary gear, including sturdy footwear, ample water, and a sense of adventure, will enhance your experience and ensure your safety.

In Conclusion

Anthargange offers more than just a trek; it provides a passage to another world, where nature’s artistic prowess is on full display. The interplay of unique rock formations , the allure of uncharted caves, and the thrill of conquering the trails all come together to create an unforgettable adventure. Whether you’re a solo traveler seeking solitude or a group of friends looking for a bonding experience, Anthargange has something magical to offer. Just remember, before you set foot on this journey, verify the latest details to ensure a seamless and enjoyable experience.

8 night treks in India for some moonlit adventure

By Ria Gupta

Two grown men sitting under the stars at night

From lounging under a sky full of stars to catching a glorious sunrise at the break of dawn, there’s ample beauty to soak in on a night trek in India. Across the western belt of the country, various trails offer the chance to scale a hill under the moonlight, spot fireflies in the dark or catch a bird’s-eye view of the twinkling lights of the cities below.

Here are eight night treks in India to try

Anthargange trek, karnataka.

8 night treks in India for some moonlit adventure

With this 3km trek near Bengaluru comes a memorable night of stargazing and cave exploration. Near Kolar, the Anthargange hilltop offers the perfect vantage point to catch the sunrise 1,712m above sea level. Trekkers make their way through rocks and boulders to reach a cave with a perennial spring, and after some exploration, continue upward to reach the peak. This is where camps are set up for a few hours of rest, if needed, as accommodations are few and far between around the area. Difficulty: moderate | Duration: 12 hours | Book with Thrillophilia

Channarayana Durga Trek, Karnataka

Winter is a great time for stargazing in India, and many hill stations in Karnataka boast unobstructed skies for a memorable experience. Channarayana Durga, a hill station near Tumkur, has a trekking trail that begins from the village and snakes up a hill. Devoid of any tree cover, the hill has great spots to look up and catch celestial wonders on the way. Other experiences along the route include touring the Channarayana Durga Fort and spotting fireflies in the dark. Difficulty: moderate | Duration: 1 day | Book with Bangalore Mountaineering Club

Kunti Betta Trek, Karnataka

Surrounded by sugarcane and paddy fields in Pandavapura, Kunti Betta is believed to have been one of the strongholds from the Mahabharata, and one of Kunti’s most frequented spots during the Pandavas’ exile. The trail, though studded with rocks and boulders at various points, is an easy walk. Various operators and mountaineering groups take sunrise treks up the hill, also offering communal bonfires, views of the sun rising over the Pandavapura lake below, and late-night kayaking. Difficulty: easy | Duration: 5 hours | Book with Thrillophilia

Sinhagad Fort Trek, Maharashtra

Popularly known as the Katraj to Sinhagad (K2S) trek, this night trek offers a view of the outskirts of Pune post-sundown on the way through 17 hills of the region. The trail ends at Sinhagad fort, from where trekkers can spot the forts of Rajgad, Torna, Lingana, Raigad and Purandar, all bathed in the orange glow of the sunrise. The trek is most commonly undertaken on full-moon nights for the best visibility. Difficulty: moderate to difficult | Duration: 8 hours | Book with Treks and Trails

Rajmachi Fort Trek, Maharashtra

This is a popular trek for firefly-spotting in the area. Rajmachi Fort is frequented by trekkers for its stunning sights even during the day. But the journey up its two strongholds—Shrivardhan and Manaranjan—is dotted with fireflies , especially during the monsoon months. The trek usually begins late evening and includes overnight camping, before ascending further to catch daybreak. Situated between Karjat and Lonavala , the fort affords stunning valley views as well. Difficulty: easy | Duration: 1 day | Book with Treks and Trails

Kalsubai Trek, Maharashtra

The best time to summit Kalsubai is at night. The highest peak in Maharashtra comes with panoramic views of its surrounding hills, and after traversing the slopes through the night, trekkers reach the peak just in time to see the sun rise. The path crosses jungle covers, paddy fields and trickling streams. The terrain can get rugged in places, but the trail is extremely popular, and locals have fitted ladders and steel railings along tricky stretches to assist tourists who frequent the hill. Difficulty: moderate | Duration: 4 hours | Book with Thrillophilia

Meesapulimala Top Station Trek, Kerala

Night at munnar top station with stars in the sky

Surrounded by tea plantations and lush valleys, Top Station view point near Munnar is a trekker’s paradise. The spot got its name from the former Kundala Valley railway station, which used to be instrumental in transporting tea from the Kannan Devan Hill plantation down to Kurangani in Tamil Nadu. The vantage point can be reached through a short trek through woods and grasslands, and offers stunning sunrise views over a bed of clouds. The trek is short, but there are tented accommodations to spend the remainder of the night. Difficulty: easy | Duration: 2 hours | Book via Marriott Bonvoy

Kolukkumalai Sunrise Trek, Kerala

The Kolukkumalai peak lies on the border of Tamil Nadu and Kerala . This route begins from Munnar in Kerala, about 32km away. Most of this trail is only accessible by a jeep, but travellers take the last 2km stretch on foot to reach the ‘leopard rock’, a protrusion in the shape of a leopard’s face. When the sun rises, it appears to emerge from the leopard’s mouth. The rays fall directly on Meesapulimala, the second highest peak in South India, which is directly visible from this very spot. Difficulty: easy | Duration: 2 hours | Book with Treks and Trails
