Eco-Tourism Terms: A Hybrid Vocabulary

Profile image of cornelia petroman

The main objective of this paper is to show how important fashionable words and/or combining words such as eco- can be in the development of one language’s vocabulary, in our case the English vocabulary. The study area is linguistics: the paper presents an analysis of the English vocabulary of the compounds with eco-. The method consists of the statistical analysis of the eco- words: share of the modern English vocabulary, structure of the compounds, parts of speech containing eco-, and share of hyphenated words with eco-. The results of our analysis show that English eco- words advertising Indian eco-tourism are twice as numerous as English eco- words attested by language dictionaries. The conclusion: though quite recent, this hybrid vocabulary is likely to prevail in the field of the everdeveloping eco-tourism.

International Linguistics Research

Ecolinguistics has been the research interest for many linguists in recent years. However, ecolinguitic researches in Indonesia are still concerned on examining the lexicon in one particular field. For this reason, this study aims to examine the lexicon treasures found in tourism area of Sanur. This is chosen as the object of this research as the tourism area is most at risk of being exposed to globalization due to tourism developments. The flow of globalization due to the development of information technology and tourism can change behavior, social attitudes or social life of the society, and the biological environment of the area as well. Based on the research results, it was found that the lexicons used by the Sanur community are not only lexicons that have a physical form or an activity, but there are also some lexicons that only refer to the concept (abstract) without finding the objects or physical activities referred to by these lexicons. The people of Sanur also feel that in...

Journal of Teaching English for Specific and Academic Purposes

Languages are subject to constant change, with new lexis being just one, yet the most sensitive. Languages for specific purposes are no exception, and this is particularly true in areas that are currently undergoing rapid development, such as tourism. The aim of the research is to analyze neonyms in the English tourism language from the perspective of new lexicon-building processes. Neonyms are understood as terms in the neologistic phase of the lexical life cycle. The contribution extracts them according to their subjective time-bound definition in the field of tourism based on the use of Internet sources as corpus, which is particularly suitable for the research of new language. The paper contributes to the understanding of tourism as a field and its specific language and sheds light on recent (often unsystematic) term formation processes. It shows indirect theoretical word formation tendencies, which are also applicable when comparing word formation processes in General English a...

The book highlights words and short phrases, both long-established and recent, from languages other than English, as well as invented words, such as the word ‘cibopathy’ from the comic series Chew, which makes reference to the protagonist’s power of gaining a grasp of the entirety of a food’s history just by consuming a part of it. An Ecotopian Lexicon’s overall purpose lies in dealing with the reality we face due to living in. With the goal of enabling us to survive and perhaps overthrowing the Anthropocene, An Ecotopian Lexicon provides 30 entries, each with a definition, a pronunciation guide, and an accompanying essay which explains the entry’s use in its original context, describing its relevance to our lives in the Anthropocene and suggesting how to apply it in English or other languages. A further section contains artists’ responses to 14 of the entries.

Ecolinguistics is a new interdisciplinary field that studies the relationship between language and environment. The link between language and environment is based on how human beings behave the natural world under the influence of thoughts, concepts, ideologies and worldviews, all of which are formed by language. It is through the language that consumer-branded identities are built up and life is set to accumulate, and it is through a language that people resist consumerism, and people are encouraged to be "more, not to have more." Through language, mentally, the world of nature is reduced to objects or resources that are used exclusively to capture humans, and through language, individuals are encouraged to respect and protect life-supporting systems. So, in simple terms, ecolinguistics is a critique of forms of language that promote environmental degradation, and help find new forms of language that persuade people to protect the world of nature. In this article, Ecoling...

Academica turistica

This paper is meant to highlight the often neglected connection between language and tourism. Languages reflect realities and, as such, they can be considered one of the strongest tools and an important indicator of human development and hence the development of tourism. In a journal dealing with innovations in tourism, we endeavour to achieve two objectives: firstly, to introduce lexical and termino-logical neologisms (roughly defined as new expressions) connected with tourism: these language structures obviously indicate paths of tourism development; and secondly, to alert the actors in tourism of new terminology. An era of robust globalization has put focus on researching the English language. The theoretical part of the paper sheds light on definitions of neologisms and the methods of their extraction , as well as touching upon the specifics of the language of tourism, while the practical section offers a selection of neologisms showing current path of tourism development. A semi-automatic method of neologism extraction was used to complete the list from different resources chosen according to the definitions of neologisms and characteristics of the language of tourism. This paper also attempts to highlight currently discussed sub-disciplines of tourism. For this purpose , we have additionally investigated the abstracts of one of the leading tourism journals, Annals of Tourism Research, and a journal dealing with innovations in tourism, Academica Turistica, Tourism Innovation Journal.

Diah Supatmiwati

The research examined the relationship between cultural ritual, linguistic, and ecology in the context of ecotourism. It aimed to encourage, stimulate, and integrate the use of religious tradition’s terms in understanding and reinterpreting the environment and human relations and its roles. Cultural forms and elements basically had the potential to be used as a tourism commodity, meaning that they could be commodified. The research also related to ecolinguistics, a study that discussed language associated with the environment in which the language grew and developed and how it was used by the community. Cultural rituals as a tourism commodity could be a means of maintaining culture and language even though they were commodified for tourism purposes. Thus, the religious-cultural structure of Rebo Buntung and Tetulaq Tamperan should be packaged following its original structure as a medium for cultural and language preservation but also packaged as attractively as possible with a conte...

The field of ecology, an interdisciplinary branch of biology, has seen substantial growth and development over the past century. This expansion has necessitated the creation and adoption of a robust lexicon to effectively describe complex ecological phenomena. This article explores the processes involved in the formation of ecological terms in English, focusing on the influences of Latin and Greek roots, borrowing from other languages, and the development of new terminology through compounding, derivation, and semantic shifts. Understanding these linguistic processes provides insight into how scientific language evolves to meet the demands of emerging scientific fields.

The goal of this article is to examine the ways in which the so-called new materialism and affective turn have given an account of their own emergence in a set of foundational stories that portray the linguistic turn and social constructionism as their main antagonists. These narratives claim that those theories that privilege the discursive and cultural analysis-like feminist and queer theory-are problematic because they overestimate the role of language at the same time that they misinterpret the nature of matter. This article examines the textual mechanisms that are used to legitimizes these new intellectual communities by exaggerating the evils of the past. What I will try to show is that, in order to do this, these narratives deploy a set of narrative vices and conceptual problems that this paper seeks to discuss.

Eco Tourism Words

Words related to eco tourism.

Below is a list of eco tourism words - that is, words related to eco tourism. The top 4 are: economics , costa rica , tourism and flora . You can get the definition(s) of a word in the list below by tapping the question-mark icon next to it. The words at the top of the list are the ones most associated with eco tourism, and as you go down the relatedness becomes more slight. By default, the words are sorted by relevance/relatedness, but you can also get the most common eco tourism terms by using the menu below, and there's also the option to sort the words alphabetically so you can get eco tourism words starting with a particular letter. You can also filter the word list so it only shows words that are also related to another word of your choosing. So for example, you could enter "economics" and click "filter", and it'd give you words that are related to eco tourism and economics.

You can highlight the terms by the frequency with which they occur in the written English language using the menu below. The frequency data is extracted from the English Wikipedia corpus, and updated regularly. If you just care about the words' direct semantic similarity to eco tourism, then there's probably no need for this.

There are already a bunch of websites on the net that help you find synonyms for various words, but only a handful that help you find related , or even loosely associated words. So although you might see some synonyms of eco tourism in the list below, many of the words below will have other relationships with eco tourism - you could see a word with the exact opposite meaning in the word list, for example. So it's the sort of list that would be useful for helping you build a eco tourism vocabulary list, or just a general eco tourism word list for whatever purpose, but it's not necessarily going to be useful if you're looking for words that mean the same thing as eco tourism (though it still might be handy for that).

If you're looking for names related to eco tourism (e.g. business names, or pet names), this page might help you come up with ideas. The results below obviously aren't all going to be applicable for the actual name of your pet/blog/startup/etc., but hopefully they get your mind working and help you see the links between various concepts. If your pet/blog/etc. has something to do with eco tourism, then it's obviously a good idea to use concepts or words to do with eco tourism.

If you don't find what you're looking for in the list below, or if there's some sort of bug and it's not displaying eco tourism related words, please send me feedback using this page. Thanks for using the site - I hope it is useful to you! 👾
