BoltBus, the affordable, trendy bus company has discontinued service; Greyhound will take over its routes

For those who loved BoltBus, with its cheap and quick trips to Portland and Vancouver, B.C., mourn this day: Greyhound Lines, its parent company, has scuttled the BoltBus brand and has no plans to get it going again.

Greyhound teamed up with Peter Pan Bus Lines to create BoltBus in 2008. By 2017, Greyhound acquired full ownership. BoltBus, with its Wi-Fi and $1 seats — chosen by lottery — was presented as a more playful and stylish alternative to traditional intercity bus companies. By 2013, it had become a strong Amtrak competitor , with quick service and lower fares from Seattle to Portland, Eugene, Bellingham and other Pacific Northwest cities.

But, a Greyhound spokesperson said this week, a drop in demand during the COVID-19 pandemic led the parent company to suspend BoltBus routes. Now Greyhound has dropped them altogether.

“Currently there is not a timeline to return BoltBus operations,” a Greyhound spokesperson said. “But we are committed to serving the community by providing transportation through Greyhound.”

Now that BoltBus is gone, how do you plan to get around the Northwest?

Update, Tuesday, July 6: Greyhound issued a clarification via a spokesperson, saying that BoltBus may return at some point, but no details about the timeline are available. “At this time the team is focused on service renovation,” the spokesperson said including but not limited to updated technology and internal processes.”

BoltBus, Favorite of Frugal Riders, Suspends Service Indefinitely

The shutdown comes just as domestic travelers are getting back on the road.

bolt bus travel

By Alyssa Lukpat

BoltBus, the bus service known for offering its passengers Wi-Fi and $1 lottery seats, is shutting down operations indefinitely after months of low ridership during the pandemic, according to Greyhound , its parent company.

The discount bus operator announced last month that it was transferring most of its routes to Greyhound so it could “undergo renovations.” BoltBus had suspended service earlier during the pandemic, but its parent company said this week that the operator had no plans to put its buses back on the road.

“Currently there is not a timeline to return BoltBus operations,” Emma Kaiser, a Greyhound spokeswoman, told The Seattle Times .

Greyhound did not respond to emails or phone calls seeking comment on Saturday.

Greyhound, which operates the largest intercity bus fleet in North America, teamed up with Peter Pan Bus Lines in 2008 to start BoltBus. The companies wanted to offer an affordable ride to people put off by grubbier alternatives on the market.

At least one seat on every BoltBus ride sold for $1 plus a booking fee. Passengers could reserve seats, unlike on Greyhound. BoltBus offered passengers Wi-Fi, individual power outlets and extra legroom, according to its website .

The company shuttled riders among cities in the Northeast and in the Pacific Northwest. Greyhound took sole ownership of BoltBus in 2017.

In May, Greyhound announced that it was shutting down its remaining Canadian operations .

Other cheap intercity bus operators that are still running, including FlixBus, Peter Pan and Megabus, may see a surge in riders, because domestic travel is on the rise as pandemic restrictions loosen.

Mediocre equipment, bad app, horrible support

I used Bolt scooters and bikes all over Krakow for several days. I had poor experiences with the Bolt scooters, many being under powered, not recognizing clear corridors between red zones, and misrepresenting the available power. I had to uninstall and reinstall the app several times, including once just to end a ride because the app froze and wouldn’t let me stop. I also had the app freeze at the end of a group ride and only let me finish one of the 4 scooters in the group. When I contacted support, they kept asking what error message I got, and either because they didn’t understand me, or were being intentionally obtuse, would not accept any explanation I tried to give. I uploaded photos of the scooters parking spots, screenshots of the 1st scooters’s completion and tried to appeal to them using their own data, it to no avail. The poor app ended up costing m an additional 45PLN, more than the original ride cost and their support team refused to refund my money despite the overwhelming evidence I presented. I would suggest using Lime or Tier or Bird but never again Bolt.
Leaving a review has an opportunity cost. I don’t want to waste my time leaving a detailed negative review because it’s just not worth my time. For Bolt, though, I’ll make an exception. I decided to try Bolt for the first time this weekend. I was in a rush, and Uber wasn’t connecting me to a driver. I downloaded Bolt, thinking I’d give them a chance to win me over. This was a Friday. Bolt tried to connect me, failed, then reconnected to a driver, failed again. At that point, my Uber had connected so that’s what I used. Flash forward to Sunday. We’re in London, pubs are closing. My wife and I are ready to go home. The bus (love it) will take 45 minutes. Uber will take 20, but costs an arm and a leg. Bolt is half the price, and only adds a couple of minutes of wait time. I select Bolt. A six minute wait turns into a six minute wait. And another six minutes. Three minutes have elapsed, and it’s still a six minute wait. I’ve been connected to a driver - hurray. Except my ride is cancelled. I decide to take the bus. My wife wants to try Bolt on her account. We connect to a driver. A three minute wait turns into a four minute wait. The driver cancels. We end up taking the TfL bus. It’s reliable. I delete the Bolt app. I leave this review. I hope that others don’t make the same mistake. Peace out Bolt, good luck ✌️

A Disappointing Setback

Experience: Needed to commute to work, located an hour away. Issue: Encountered a major hurdle with Bolt’s payment system - my debit card, despite multiple verifications with the bank, was consistently declined. Bolt’s system is apparently at fault. Customer Service Response: Lacking effectiveness. Now, there’s an additional 48-hour wait just to attempt adding a card again. Overall Assessment: Bolt’s failure in a basic service aspect - processing a payment - is more than just a personal inconvenience; it’s a glaring flaw in their system. This incident isn’t just about being stranded without a ride; it reflects poorly on Bolt’s reliability and customer service quality. Impact on Bolt’s Reputation and Business: Such experiences can severely damage Bolt’s reputation. In the competitive ride-sharing market, reliability and ease of use are crucial. Issues like these drive customers away, potentially to competitors. Every frustrated customer like me represents not just a lost ride but a loss of trust in Bolt’s ability to deliver a basic service. Moreover, word of mouth and online reviews magnify the impact of negative experiences, further eroding the company’s standing in the eyes of potential customers. Bolt needs to urgently address these issues to retain its user base and uphold its market position.

Five Boston to New York Bus Lines to Suit Any Budget

Five Alternative Bus Lines Serving Boston and New York

bolt bus travel

Monica Fecke / Contributor / Getty Images

If you have friends or family in New York but live in Boston, you likely need an easy way to get back and forth between the cities. Luckily, that's quite easy either via train or bus - though bus is typically the less expensive option. Busses travel frequently between Boston's South Station and New York's Port Authority  and there are a few companies that are known for this transportation.

There are an abundance of low-cost buses serving Boston and New York that are perfect for those regularly (or sporadically) traveling to New York. The competition between the low-cost bus lines has made the fares really cheap, and the increased options for consumers have also led each bus company to step up their service, too. Book a bus ticket today, and you'll find buses that are clean, high-tech, and pleasant (assuming you aren't stuck on one in heavy traffic, in which case the train may be a better option).

Try using Wanderu , a service that partners with many different bus companies to ensure you get the best prices for your trip.

I've always had a great experience on the BoltBus. Your ticket guarantees you a seat at your selected departure time, so there's no wondering whether you'll get bumped if there's a crowd of people who also want to travel at the same time as you. Each seat has a lot of legroom and a tray table to easily hold a laptop. Additionally, every bus has wi-fi and individual seat outlets, so if you want to get work done, stream a movie, or goof around online, you can. A subsidiary of Greyhound , BoltBus has at least one seat available for $1 on every schedule (first-come, first-nabbed), and I've never paid more than $25 each way. Pick-up/drop-off is at South Station in Boston and, depending on the schedule, 1st Ave between 38th and 39th streets or at the corner of W 33rd Street and 11th Avenue in midtown Manhattan.

If you're traveling from Cambridge or Newton, Go Bus offers service from either suburb to New York City. Cambridge pickup/drop-off is at the Alewife T station; Newton service is at the Riverside T station. New York City service is on 31st Street between 8th and 9th (outside of Penn Station). Each coach has Wi-fi and seat outlets, and when I compared fare prices it looked like tickets were capped at $30 each way.

"I found that Go Bus is a great choice during prime travel times and holidays if you are on a budget," says Lev Matskevich, revenue and marketing manager at Wanderu , an online travel search site that focuses exclusively on bus travel. "Their pricing does not fluctuate as much, so you can really get a great deal when everyone is hitting the road at the same time to reunite with family and friends. They do sell out, though, so it is always advisable to plan at least a little bit ahead."

3. LimoLiner

Ok, so this one isn't exactly a budget option – but the LimoLiner is a great bus line to know about if you want to travel to New York in style. Here's what you get on each ride: Leather seats, beverage service and a light meal, wi-fi, satellite TV and radio, magazines, and a pillow and blanket. If you're traveling in the evening, you'll also get a complimentary glass of wine. Fares are $89 each way, with travel from the Sheraton Boston Back Bay and the New York Hilton Midtown. Pickup/drop-offs can also be requested from Framingham.

4. Lucky Star

Of the much-beleaguered Chinatown buses , Lucky Star still remains. This no-frills option offers wi-fi enabled service from South Station to lower Manhattan (specifically 55-59 Chrystie Street, between Hester and Canal streets). Fares typically cost $20, $25, or $30 each way, and be sure to check both discount and full-price ticket options for your travel dates on the Lucky Star website – I sometimes found cheaper rates under the full-fare section compared to the discount prices.

The only double-decker bus option among the five companies listed here, MegaBus offers daily service to New York from South Station. Arrivals in New York are at 7th and 28th streets, but pickup is at 34th Street between 11th and 12th avenues (across from the Javits Center ). In addition to offering a high-up view, Megabus seats have wi-fi and outlets. At press time, one-way tickets were capped at $30 (and they were the first bus line to offer $1 seats, available on a first-come, first-served basis).

Changing Skyline: Bring Philadelphia’s suffering bus travelers inside

Consider it a tale of two transportation modes.

Go to JFK Boulevard in University City and you'll see travelers huddled on the sidewalk like refugees, in the scorching sun of summer and the chilling wind of winter, while they wait for buses to New York or Washington. Then walk across the street to the soaring waiting room of 30th Street Station , where Amtrak riders heading to the same destinations relax in climate-controlled comfort, sipping lattes until their trains are called.

Though no one could argue that conditions for American rail travelers are ideal, intercity bus riders have it many times worse. Philadelphia boasts the second-highest bus ridership in the country, after New York, and yet our main bus station at 10th and Filbert is a grim, one-story, cinder-block affair that would not look out of place in a third world country. At least it has a roof. For riders taking the BoltBus or Megabus from the university area - some 5,000 people a day - there is no cover at all.

But Philadelphia's neglected bus riders could finally see some relief. Buried deep within the new Amtrak master plan is a proposal for a modern bus terminal on the north side of 30th Street Station. And unlike most of the projects depicted in Amtrak's eye-catching renderings, the bus station is something that could actually happen in our lifetimes.

Building a new bus station for its competitors was probably the last thing on Amtrak's mind when it commissioned the long-range plan from SOM, WSP/Parsons Brinckerhoff, and Olin. The main goal was to monetize the underused real estate over the 30th Street Station rail yards to compensate for the never-ending reductions in federal funding. What seemed to captivate the public most after the plan was released this summer was a proposal to build a miniature Center City north of the station, between the Schuylkill and Drexel University.

The high-rise development would certainly be a huge boon to Philadelphia's economy. Unfortunately, the forest of skyscrapers is unlikely to materialize until Amtrak can build its long-promised high-speed rail network . At best, we're talking three or four decades. When those superfast trains finally do arrive, you can bet ticket prices will be in the stratosphere, beyond the reach of anyone who doesn't travel on an expense account.

Buses, on the other hand, are cheap - as little as $10 for a one-way ticket on the Philadelphia-New York run - and are likely to remain so. Low fares are one reason private motor coaches are now the fastest-growing form of intercity travel, growing faster than planes, trains, and automobiles. By beefing up its bus infrastructure, the city could enjoy an economic jolt at a fraction of the cost of high-speed rail.

Long-distance buses were once seen as the travel mode of last resort, patronized by drifters and lost souls. But the introduction of luxury coaches equipped with restrooms and WiFi has changed all that, explains Joseph P. Schwieterman, a transit expert at DePaul University's Chaddick Institute for Metropolitan Development. Rising Amtrak fares on the Northeast Corridor accelerated the shift. Now, everyone from college students to business travelers rides short-haul buses.

Bus operators have done particularly well on the East Coast, where cities are crammed close together. Philadelphia's location in the middle of the vast Northeast megalopolis has made it "a hotbed for short-haul bus companies," Schwieterman says. Together, BoltBus and Megabus carried more than 1.8 million Philadelphia riders in 2013. Greyhound, which owns BoltBus, handles similar traffic at the Filbert Street station.

The growing numbers have made the deplorable condition of the city's bus infrastructure unacceptable. Because the Filbert and JFK depots are next to Regional Rail stations, they are, in theory, an intermodalist's dream . Yet there are almost no signs or pathways in either location to smooth the connection to the trains. "People are always stopping to ask me, 'Where is the BoltBus?' " says Natalie Shieh, who is overseeing Amtrak's master plan from her office at 30th Street Station.

Amtrak's design for the new station is still preliminary, but the early concept calls for a covered, 11-bay terminal on Arch Street, steps from the train station's north entrance. A ticket office and waiting room would be incorporated into the canopy structure. Because the site borders the Cira Centre's front plaza, there is an opportunity to create an outdoor seating area served by food vendors. With the Amtrak parking garage next door, it's an intermodal trifecta.

There's just one hitch. The alignment of the I-76 and I-676 ramps complicates vehicle access to the site, forcing buses to loop around from Market Street. The ramp arrangement is also the main reason Amtrak has never been able to get the traffic circulation right at 30th Street Station.

So, before it builds the bus station, Amtrak wants PennDot to reconfigure the ramps. As highway projects go, it's small change, $32 million. But given the pace of these things, Shieh estimates it will take 10 years before Amtrak can start work on the bus station, which is now estimated to cost $17 million.

That's too long for people to stand out in the heat and the cold. It's also too long for Drexel University, which is planning to expand onto JFK Boulevard as part of its Schuylkill Yards innovation district .

Why wait for the ramps to be reconstructed? Amtrak owns the one-acre surface lot. It wouldn't cost much to erect a temporary canopy and small enclosure , and make a few street adjustments to accommodate buses. This is exactly the kind of problem architectural competitions are meant to solve. If we can do pop-up beer gardens, we can do a pop-up bus station.

Boston, Washington, and Denver have already taken steps to improve conditions for bus travelers, by carving out space in their Amtrak stations for bus bays. Though these makeshift depots don't offer the graciousness of a classic train station, they're far better than leaving riders out in the elements. Amtrak might also consider setting aside space in its garage for buses.

Initially, bus operators resisted moving indoors because it meant paying docking fees. But city officials in Boston and Washington put down their respective feet. The operators, in turn, added a small surcharge to their ticket prices. As the popularity of bus travel broadens, operators have come to believe civilized waiting areas are crucial to their brands.

The problems at Filbert Street go beyond the station's dismal physical condition. Traffic congestion is terrible because buses must navigate Chinatown's narrow streets. A 2009 Planning Commission study noted that putting bus bays on Arch Street created a wide gap that "cripples one of Chinatown's most important retail streets." Because the property is privately owned, it is hard to believe the station's large surface lot will remain undeveloped after the Gallery reopens in 2018.

So, here’s the big question: Instead of having two substandard bus depots, should Philadelphia aim for one gracious, modern bus facility? Bus travel is expected to double by 2040. Philadelphia can’t just wait around to solve the problem of its bus infrastructure.

Gagarin cup (khl) finals:  atlant moscow oblast vs. salavat yulaev ufa.

Much like the Elitserien Finals, we have a bit of an offense vs. defense match-up in this league Final.  While Ufa let their star top line of Alexander Radulov, Patrick Thoresen and Igor Grigorenko loose on the KHL's Western Conference, Mytischi played a more conservative style, relying on veterans such as former NHLers Jan Bulis, Oleg Petrov, and Jaroslav Obsut.  Just reaching the Finals is a testament to Atlant's disciplined style of play, as they had to knock off much more high profile teams from Yaroslavl and St. Petersburg to do so.  But while they did finish 8th in the league in points, they haven't seen the likes of Ufa, who finished 2nd.

This series will be a challenge for the underdog, because unlike some of the other KHL teams, Ufa's top players are generally younger and in their prime.  Only Proshkin amongst regular blueliners is over 30, with the work being shared by Kirill Koltsov (28), Andrei Kuteikin (26), Miroslav Blatak (28), Maxim Kondratiev (28) and Dmitri Kalinin (30).  Oleg Tverdovsky hasn't played a lot in the playoffs to date.  Up front, while led by a fairly young top line (24-27), Ufa does have a lot of veterans in support roles:  Vyacheslav Kozlov , Viktor Kozlov , Vladimir Antipov, Sergei Zinovyev and Petr Schastlivy are all over 30.  In fact, the names of all their forwards are familiar to international and NHL fans:  Robert Nilsson , Alexander Svitov, Oleg Saprykin and Jakub Klepis round out the group, all former NHL players.

For Atlant, their veteran roster, with only one of their top six D under the age of 30 (and no top forwards under 30, either), this might be their one shot at a championship.  The team has never won either a Russian Superleague title or the Gagarin Cup, and for players like former NHLer Oleg Petrov, this is probably the last shot at the KHL's top prize.  The team got three extra days rest by winning their Conference Final in six games, and they probably needed to use it.  Atlant does have younger regulars on their roster, but they generally only play a few shifts per game, if that.

The low event style of game for Atlant probably suits them well, but I don't know how they can manage to keep up against Ufa's speed, skill, and depth.  There is no advantage to be seen in goal, with Erik Ersberg and Konstantin Barulin posting almost identical numbers, and even in terms of recent playoff experience Ufa has them beat.  Luckily for Atlant, Ufa isn't that far away from the Moscow region, so travel shouldn't play a major role.

I'm predicting that Ufa, winners of the last Superleague title back in 2008, will become the second team to win the Gagarin Cup, and will prevail in five games.  They have a seriously well built team that would honestly compete in the NHL.  They represent the potential of the league, while Atlant represents closer to the reality, as a team full of players who played themselves out of the NHL.

  • Atlant @ Ufa, Friday Apr 8 (3:00 PM CET/10:00 PM EST)
  • Atlant @ Ufa, Sunday Apr 10 (1:00 PM CET/8:00 AM EST)
  • Ufa @ Atlant, Tuesday Apr 12 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)
  • Ufa @ Atlant, Thursday Apr 14 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)

Games 5-7 are as yet unscheduled, but every second day is the KHL standard, so expect Game 5 to be on Saturday, like an early start.
