Bottom Line: As a rough rule, pack enough underwear and socks to wear fresh every day, several changes of tops and a couple of pairs of shorts or pants, depending on the weather.

Keep yourself entertained on long journeys, and stay connected with friends and family by taking a few carefully chosen electronics. It’s also worth considering an electronic organizer to keep all your cables and cords tidy.

A digital camera — whether you opt for the simplicity of a point and shoot camera, or the heft of a digital SLR , your camera will capture memories to treasure forever.

iPad or tablet — offering an easy way to watch movies, read books, or even check your emails on the move, your tablet will become an important piece of kit. Let’s be real here, most airlines and operators are looking to switch to paperless boarding in the not too distant future if they haven’t already done so! However, technology isn’t without its own occasional breakdowns, and in some countries, only paper tickets will be accepted. Be sure to print hard copies of your travel documents to keep with you, including your boarding pass, tickets, and itineraries.

You’ll be able to use your credit or debit card in thousands of locations across the world. But, just in case you have problems with the electronic banking systems, or you lose your cards, keep some cash close at hand — just in case.

You’ll need to find out which currency is best for your destination, then convert enough USD to see you through, should the worst happen.

Your personal details

In case you should find yourself somehow hurt or misplaced, keep your personal details on you. Print basic details like your name, address, next of kin contact information, and any relevant health issues or allergies on a credit card size laminate, and tuck it in your wallet.

Get everything together and lay it out

Start by gathering together everything you plan to take with you. Lay it all out and take a good, long look at it. If it looks like it won’t fit in your suitcase, trim it down by leaving some pieces at home.

• If you plan on going out partying, choose simple pieces like a little black dress or smart shorts and a jersey that can be worn with flip flops or sandals , so you don’t need to pack a ton of heavy shoes.

Consider washing clothes on the road

If you’re staying in hostels or basic accommodation, ask if they have a washer you can use, or find a nearby launderette. For everyday items like a bathing suit, underwear, and socks, you can even take a small container of laundry detergent with you and wash and rinse in the sink.

Fold, Interfold, Bundle, or Roll?

You could just throw everything into your luggage and hope for the best, but if you want to arrive at your destination as crease-free and ready to go as possible, try these different ways to pack:

Fold — the most traditional of all packing options, fold your clothes as neatly as possible and place in piles. This can cause creases and wrinkles if not properly executed.

Interfold — layer clothes on top of each other in a top-to-bottom, bottom-to-top format, interweaving them as you fold. This will leave you well-organized outfits, that arrive virtually unwrinkled.

Bundle — tightly fold or wrap your clothing around a soft, larger object like a toiletry bag, a stack of underwear or a pair of sneakers. This can help to save space in your luggage and lower the risk of wrinkles.

Roll — a popular choice with many travelers, rolling your clothes instead of folding them helps to increase the amount of useable space in your case, as well as keeping them crease free — it’s also straightforward to do!

Use packing cubes

These useful little zippered compartments can help to keep your luggage well organized on the go , and can be removed and used when you get there. On a beach vacation, it could be useful to keep all of your bathing suits together, or you might keep clothes for each day in one cube.

Secure your liquids

The Transports Security Authority (TSA) has hard and fast rules about liquids that you must adhere to before you can board an airplane. This means that you’ll need to use travel size containers to transport your toiletries with you in a carry-on.

If you decant your full-sized products into smaller containers, make sure they’re fully sealed before packing in a toiletry bag .

Stuff your shoes

Finally, if you don’t want your shoes to be squashed beyond all recognition before you get there, try stuffing your shoes with socks. This saves a little bit of space and also helps them to keep their shape on the go. Simple!

Although different airlines may vary slightly in the type of restrictions they expect you to adhere to, there are some general rules that you need to keep in mind:

Cabin luggage

Carry-on allowances are there for a reason. They restrict the size and amount of luggage that each passenger can bring on-board, and failing to comply will see your luggage placed in the hold at an extra expense.

Cases and carry bags are usually restricted to 22 x 14 x 9 inches to fit in the overhead locker, but this can vary an inch or two depending on the airline . Some airlines will allow one case or carry bag that fits these criteria, and one other smaller bag like a purse or diaper bag if you’re traveling with an infant . There’s not usually a restriction on weight for carry-on bags.

Checked Luggage

Most airlines allow one checked piece of luggage per passenger for international flights but may charge for checked luggage on domestic flights. Usually, the total linear dimensions of your suitcase (that’s the length + height + width) should not be more than 62 inches .

The weight is also significant when it comes to checked luggage, and your case or bag should (generally) not exceed 50 pounds. Again, this may vary by airline, so it’s best to check.

Other items such as strollers , sports equipment, wheelchairs, musical instruments, and other medical items, can also be checked, but check with your airline first to see if there are any restrictions or additional costs.

Baggage fees and allowances

Every airline will charge you if your luggage is over the specified weight and size restrictions. The amount you have to pay will depend on where you’re traveling to and the type of ticket you’re traveling on. The airline may charge you a dollar amount per excess weight, or you may be charged a flat fee for overweight or additional cases.

Hot Tip: Always check your airline restrictions before you travel and invest in some luggage scales to avoid overweight baggage fees.

Prohibited items

Individual airlines have comprehensive lists of what can and can’t be carried or checked on their routes, and you should familiarize yourself with this before you leave. These will usually include items such as flammable liquids, explosives, fireworks, and chemicals, at the very least.

Follow the 3-1-1 rule for carry-on

The TSA has a simple rule for anyone liquids you carry on board any domestic or international flight. This is referred to as the 3-1-1 security rule for liquids. It means that each passenger may carry liquids, gels, and aerosols in travel-size containers that are 3.4 ounces or less. These must be carried in a clear quart-sized bag.

Bottom Line: To sum up, 3.4-ounce bottles or less in 1 quart-sized, clear, plastic, zip-top bag and only 1 bag per passenger. Stick to this, and you’ll be golden.

Never check essentials

While it may be tempting to check big tubes of sunscreen or hide your currency and credit cards somewhere in your padlocked suitcase, not having your essentials close by can cause you serious problems upon arrival to your destination.

You should always keep your money, passport, tickets, medication, cell phone, sunscreen, glasses, and contact lens solution in your carry-on bag . This way, should your flight be delayed or your suitcase is lost in transit, you’ll still be able to access your money, medication, and other essentials, wherever you may land.

Pack spare clothes in a carry-on in case of delays

Because suitcases can be loaded on the wrong flight from time to time, it’s always worth keeping an emergency change of clothes in your carry-on baggage — just in case.

Remember to pack weather-appropriate clothing for your destination and keep it as lightweight and compact as possible. Underwear, a clean t-shirt, and maybe some shorts should be enough to see you through a beach vacation transit emergency.

Whether you are going for a week, a month, or even longer, follow these simple rules to keep your house secure while you’re away and ensure it’s ready for your return:

Other Things For the Beach

What Should I Bring on a Beach Day Trip?

Of course, my beach day packing list is shorter than my entire beach vacation checklist. 

That being said, there are certain things to bring to the beach no matter how long you plan to stay. Let’s talk about the components of any essential beach packing list.

Sun Protection

First and foremost: don’t forget sun protection. Wear sunscreen , sunglasses , and a cute sun hat .

Wearing sunscreen is important for protecting your skin from sun exposure and sunburns.

Some form of sunblock should be the first thing in your beach bag.

I burn easily, so I always opt for a rub-in lotion over a spray or mist. Coral Isles is my go-to reef-safe sunscreen– I want to do all that I can to protect our coral reefs from bleaching.

Reef-safe sunscreens don’t contain coral-damaging chemicals like oxybenzone, octinoxate, and parabens. 

Along with sunscreen, I throw in small items like SPF lip balm and hand sanitizer.

Note: Remember to account for the travel size requirements if you’re traveling via airplane (less than or equal to 100 ml/3.4 oz in volume). Otherwise, you’ll need to make a pit stop once you’ve arrived at your special beach destination.

Drinking Water

If there’s anything I want you to take away from what you should bring to the beach, it’s sunscreen and a water bottle. 

We talked about protecting your skin with sunscreen. Now it’s time for water.

Having water on hand combats a variety of potential problems, like dehydration and heat exhaustion. 

Staying hydrated also helps you recover from long hours in the sun and keeps your skin hydrated.

The hot sun does make it hard to keep your water cold, but it’s important to drink from your water bottle, no matter the temperature. 

Luckily, you can keep water cold with an insulated reusable water bottle like a Hydroflask or Cirkul Bottle . 

Remember to bring an extra bottle of water and a dish if your dog is coming along for the adventure!

My Secret Tips

I try to learn from my previous vacations. Here are a few of my secret items that I carry: 

If you wear contacts like me, bring an extra pair. You never know if one will get messed up while swimming (been there, dealt with that). 

Hair Protection

I also color my hair, so a heat protection spray that protects hair from sun damage is a great idea. It also helps keep the color in good condition. 

Speaking of spray–I always bring bug spray . Sometimes bugs or gnats surprise you on the beach and come out of nowhere…I’m personally not a fan.

On that note, research what wildlife might be at the beach you’re going to. 

Sting Swabs

I recently found out you can purchase insect sting swabs . 

This would have been helpful when my friend got stung by a jellyfish during one of our beach trips in North Carolina…or when I was stung by a bee in New Hampshire.

I’m sensitive to the sun, and sunscreen wears off. I always bring a rash guard to prevent burning when I’m in and out of the water. 

Water Shoes

I also bring water shoes if I’m going to a rocky beach. Bruises from pointy stones are painful, and I get unbalanced trying to tiptoe across the rocks.

Portable Speaker

Everyone loves the person who remembers their portable speaker .

Help yourself out by choosing a big beach bag with lots of space. 

I like carry-all totes that I can drop everything into. This tote , in particular, is perfect. It has a classic striped pattern and outer pockets to keep your sandals.

I recommend backpacks if you’re bringing a beach chair or larger beach items because of the hands-free carrying.

When it comes to keeping your items dry inside that bag, you have a variety of options. 

Sometimes, I use a waterproof phone case that I can take straight into the water for underwater videos. 

But other times, I put my cell phone and important belongings into a dry bag . Then, I take pictures with a waterproof camera like a GoPro .

How Do You Pack for 7 Days at the Beach?

A seven-day beach vacation packing list requires more planning and thought, but it doesn’t have to be daunting.

My beach packing list for a week of fun is more comprehensive than my normal beach packing list. 

Instead of daytime necessities, now we’re talking about changes of clothes and outfits suitable for sunrise beach walks and seaside dinners. 

Planning ahead instead of tossing stuff into a bag on Friday night makes each day that much better. 

Consider what you want your setup to look like–do you prefer beach chairs, or are you okay with sitting on a beach blanket for multiple days? 

When I head somewhere for an extended stay, I take all the beach gear, from items I’ll need on the beach to after-sun products. 

I take everything that is normally in my beach bag, plus larger items like chairs , a snack table , an umbrella , and a cooler .

After all, there’s nothing like napping in comfortable beach chairs under the shade of a beach umbrella. 

If you’re going on an extended beach vacation, it’s a good idea to bring at least one swimsuit cover-up . 

A bathing suit and flip-flops are suitable for the beach itself, but cover-ups and a change of clothes are more appropriate if you’re heading to any other activity or a restaurant for dinner.

I know– clothes take up extra space in your beach bag or carry-on…but wet clothes feel heavy and cold when you’re not on the beach. 

Plus, bringing a cover-up or change of clothes with you means you don’t need to rely on going back to the hotel room to change.

Pre-Trip Double-Check

Before leaving home, I do one last check of the beach essentials. A beach weekend away or seven-day stay is the perfect time to restock. 

If the sunscreen is empty, buy a new one. Same with sting swabs, lip balm, and anything else that runs out. 

Right before a big trip is also the best time to upgrade things like ice chests, beach chairs, and towels . 

Maybe you can even spring for a cute new swimsuit or snorkel for the kids.

How Do I Not Overpack on a Beach Vacation?

As an over-preparer who always wants to have everything on hand, I know how much of a challenge it can be to pack light. 

Ultimately, you will have to weigh what matters most to you. 

Items like sunscreen and water are necessary. Bathing suits, towels, and lightweight clothing are a given as well. 

I try to help myself save space by bringing travel-size creams, shower products, and medicine. 

Items like a beach chair are a bonus, but many of us beach lovers are content with beach blankets.

While I prefer a plush beach towel, sometimes I’ll take a thin microfiber sand-resistant beach towel to save room.

Also, factor in what type of beach you’re going to. 

Sure, a rocky beach is usually sand-free, but you’ll probably need water shoes slim enough to fit in your beach bag or (carry-on if you’re flying there). 

These little things are easy to overlook, so help yourself out by planning ahead of time.

Is There Anything You Should Add to the Packing List for Your Beach Vacation with Family?

My beach packing list for family trips includes the essentials of any day at the beach but supersized. 

After all, you’ll have more hands to help carry things like a beach umbrella or beach cooler.

All-inclusive resorts or a fully stocked vacation rental will provide beach towels.

If it’s easy and you have the space, throw an extra cheap pair of flip-flops or sunglasses in your beach bag. 

I found that on a family beach vacation, someone always loses a shoe or steals their sibling’s pair…

I’d also plan on either one communal wet swimsuit bag or having each person bring their own. No one wants to get stuck carrying a wet swimsuit without a waterproof bag, let alone multiple.

Always keep additional sun protection in mind. 

If you’re heading for the beach with multiple family members, a bottle of sunscreen is going to run out much faster than you may expect (speaking from experience). 

Aaaaand aloe vera. I know from my own family beach trips that some of my family members were convinced they wouldn’t get sunburnt. 

Then, I was always the one handing over the tube of aloe vera when they showed up red later that day…

Depending on the ages of your family members, consider bringing beach toys or an underwater camera. 

No matter what age you are, in-person entertainment is better than scrolling on your cell phone, which could overheat.

And remember, everyone has different interests! 

I’m personally not a huge fan of water sports or searching for marine life, so you probably won’t find me with snorkel gear on. 

You’ll find me on the beach blanket with a book . 

However, I have family members who love playing beach tennis and skidding into the surf with boogie boards–so I make sure to think through everyone’s interests when making a family beach vacation packing list. 

What Should You Put on the Beach Packing List for a Couple?

The key to packing for a couple’s beach trip is turning up the romance and showing your partner that you know what they like.

That being said, if you are going on a couple’s beach vacation, consider bringing specific items related to your relationship. 

Maybe you and your partner enjoy the same type of beverage or share a favorite beach pastime (e.g. volleyball , bocce, reading, portable board game).

Find little ways to feel connected to one another! Share one large beach blanket instead of two individual beach towels. 

Talk through the packing list with your partner ahead of your trip so you can focus on each other once at your romantic beach destinations.

Double-check that you’re both packing appropriate clothes for your activities.

This is especially important if you’re going on a honeymoon or celebrating an anniversary with a nice dinner. 

Some restaurants may have a dress code where sandy flip-flops won’t fly.

You can also surprise them with a new accessory to use on your beach trip, like a hat or cover-up. Or go the homemade route by coordinating a beach picnic. 

If nothing else, set aside time for a long walk up and down the shore. 

What Do You Need on the Beach Packing List for a Toddler?

Your beach trip packing list with a baby or toddler is going to look similar to your family beach vacation packing list 

Here are additional beach essentials for toddlers:

Keep toddlers occupied for hours with a sand castle set . Just make sure there are enough mini shovels for everyone.

No one enjoys hot sand that burns your feet, especially toddlers. To avoid the fuss, ensure they have shoes or water shoes on (if you can get them to keep the shoes on, that is).

Kid’s Sunscreen

The last thing you’ll want is for your toddler to get a sunburn, so make sure to wear sunscreen that’s 50 SPF or higher. 

I suggest sunblock sticks (shaped like lip balm) for easy application if your toddler is fussy.

Get them a kids’ sun hat . Once again, it may or may not be hard to get them to keep it on, but you’ll be grateful to have it.

Rash Guards

Rash guards are an extra level of protection. They also help if you’re heading somewhere with slightly cold water.

First Aid Kit

Because we all know how clumsy toddlers can be, bringing a first aid kit will be a good idea. 

Waterproof Bandaids

Maybe bring waterproof bandaids as well because the standard kits will likely have regular ones inside.  

Spill-Proof Cup

On that clumsy note–make sure to bring a spill-proof cup for your toddler. Fresh water is valuable when far from the nearest beach stand or your accommodation. 

The commotion of a beach day with kids will make it all too easy for an open cup to be knocked over. 

Bring floaties for safety if you plan on playing in the water. Toss them in the bag even if you don’t plan on taking them into the waves. 

Water wing floaties are flat to pack, quick to inflate, and add peace of mind.

Make sure to have snacks for toddlers or kids. You can never go wrong with granola bars and juice boxes. 

Just make sure to have some form of trash container with you for all the snack wrappers.

There you go–all the beach essentials you’ll need for your next beach vacation. Grab your flip-flops and beach towel. It’s time for some sun!

The Essential 3-Day Weekend Beach Packing List

Getting ready for a long weekend at the beach? I’ve got just the thing to make packing for your beach vacation a breeze. There’s no need to stress, just get out your suitcase, read through this list, and complete the job in less than 15 minutes. See, aren’t you relaxed already?

The nice thing about packing for a beach getaway is that you really don’t need to pack too much. No heavy coats, no bulky boots, just light and bright. So take that 15 minutes and pack these 15 items and you’ll be on your way in no time.

Pack Light and Pack Bright

Two rules to follow when packing for a 3-day beach vacation are to pack light and pack bright.

When it comes to packing light, this list of 15 essentials (excluding your beauty products and undergarments) will get you through all but the fanciest of social situations, from brunch to beach and shopping to a night on the town. The list is universal to any beach destination, should be easy to find in your closet, and will fit into a small travel bag. No need to lug around your 25” rolling suitcase.

In addition to being easy and lightweight, think bright when it comes to color. Sunshine is the perfect complement to vibrant colors, whether it is fuschia, lime green, or hot pink. Florals, polka dots, and stripes are great choices for beachy locales. Leave the somber clothing at home for another time. Go big, go bold, go bright!

A Universal Beach Packing List

This beach packing list is somewhat broad in terms of clothing. I want to identify specific items that you should pack, such as a swimsuit. But I don’t want to dictate that it be a bikini or a tankini. You know your style and what looks good on you. Be true to yourself, wear what makes you comfortable, and enjoy the sunshine and ocean waves.

I’ve also painted a broader picture because I don’t want you to think you have to go out and buy a light blue printed chiffon maxi dress for your 3-day beach getaway. The point is that you should have that maxi dress in your bag, whether it is solid, striped or print, yellow or purple, halter or tank style. Use your judgment and your sense of style for each garment.

I have, however, provided images of what I have packed for just this occasion to give you a point of reference, and to encourage you to go bright and light. (And don’t forget those accessories!) Not only do these images provide inspiration, they’ll get you in the mood for that beach vacation, the sun, the salt air, and the fun you are about to have.

So here it is, get ready to start packing!

Versatility Is Key

Now that you’ve seen my essential beach packing list, you may have noticed a common thread; almost every item is versatile and can be paired different ways.

That maxi dress can be worn as a beach cover-up over your bathing suit, paired with sandals for brunch or shopping, or you can up the drama factor with the wedges and a scarf for a nice dinner.

Your sandals can be worn with the bathing suit, shorts, maxi or white jeans, while the wedges will also work with all four of those!

Wear the shorts with a t-shirt and the denim jacket for a bike ride along the beach or pair them with the bathing suit and a sun hat for lounging by the ocean.

If you stick with several base neutrals—white jeans, khaki or navy shorts, denim jacket or white cardigan—you don’t have to pack a basic white tee (although you can!). Try a nautical blue-and-white stripe or bright turquoise for something different and fun.

Get daring with the maxi dress and find a big bold floral or ikat print. Have some fun with your sandals—beaded, fringed, or embellished with stones will add some panache and still pair well with everything you have brought. Remember, light and bright! And stylish too!

Points to Keep in Mind When Creating Your Beach Weekend Packing List

I do want to provide you with a few points when it comes to these 15 items for your beach vacation.

Don’t pack anything too dressy because chances are you won’t wear it. There is just no sense in lugging around clothes you don’t need, particularly for a short trip.

For the dinner dress consider something that’s brightly patterned and would work for cocktails on the beach or a fancy beachside dinner. (Because a girl’s got to splurge a bit while on vacation!) In the collage above I have two options; one dress that is brightly patterned in a variety of colors {find it here} and one dress with a lively pattern in shades of blue {find it here}.

For jewelry, pack at most two bright necklaces that match all of your outfits. Again, nothing too fancy, the jewelry should coordinate with the clothes.

A sun hat, scarf, and sunglasses are a must! Don’t forget these as are a stylish form of sun protection. And don’t be afraid of color here either. If your wardrobe is primarily blue, try a red hat or sunglasses.

A cardigan or denim jacket is great in the evening or morning when it’s slightly cooler. Layer it over your outfits when necessary and make sure the color is a neutral so it matches all of your possible outfit combinations.

I hope this beach packing list serves as your starting off point. Of course depending on your specific activities and destination you can add or remove items.

Good tips. Bring all of that in a mesh bag though, so you don’t have to worry about sand. Dealing with sand after the beach is probably my least favorite thing ever, so I recommend baby powder now (it pulls up the moisture and the sand falls right off). • Kindle – If you plan on spending all day at the beach, pack a book or two (or a tablet like the Amazon Kindle) to keep you occupied in between swim and sunbathing sessions.
• Tablet  – As above, if you plan on spending a long time at the beach, a tablet make it far easier to keep yourself entertained.
• Smartphone   – You do have to be extra careful with your phone at the beach. Not only is there water danger, you won’t be surprised to hear that your phone doesn’t really like sand and sun either.
• Headphones  – For entertainment, bring your MP3 player with a couple of good albums. Listening to music is a great way to pass time while you’re sunbathing.

Useful Items On The Beach

Different types of beaches require different items. If you’re lounging on a Florida beach, you’ll probably want to have a beach umbrella and chairs, while Oregon beaches don’t require those items, but do call for a bucket and mini-shovel to dig up shells and clams.

When it comes to packing for a weekend trip, the contents of your suitcase (or backpack/duffel, if you’re flying Spirit ) will depend on what you’re doing. But whether it’s a ski trip, a wedding, a thrilling outdoor adventure, or a beach getaway that dictates you pack mostly bathing suits, you’ll want to consult a list of all the items you could possibly want in your arsenal, and narrow it down accordingly.

Some things you can leave off your weekend packing list, however. This includes any toiletries you could go a couple of days without, especially in lieu of whatever the hotel has: shower toiletries and hair-styling tools included. Can you use the hotel blow dryer instead of your own? Probably. Can you go even further by forgoing shaving supplies for a couple of days? Not a bad idea—but it’s ultimately up to you, and what you will need once you’re in the destination.

Here’s what to think about bringing for your weekend getaway, and what to leave in order not to overpack, from toiletries to gadgets and beach necessities.

What to Pack for a Weekend Trip

Think about what you’re going to actually be doing and plan outfits for each day to narrow down your clothing needs. You can do the same with toiletries, electronics, and essentials: What will your few days away actually demand? Only bring those things.

Items that you might usually bring but can forget about for a few days include a first-aid kit, shaving supplies, your full-size makeup bag (maybe just put the essentials into a smaller sleeve ) or bulky shaving kit, and the unnecessary bathroom items that you can get for free at the hotel, like moisturizer, shampoo, conditioner, and a comb.

Aftersun/aloe and bug spray might also not be necessary—or could be available on-site wherever you’re staying. Because most weekend trips aren’t international, we’ve left off most medications and similar over-the-counter items you can easily buy if you end up needing them.

• Glasses and/or contact lenses/solution
• Makeup/makeup remover/any other face necessities
• Feminine hygiene products
• Medicines/birth control/vitamins you need daily

Beach Gear  

If you’re taking a beach trip, the packing gods rejoice: Most necessities are small and worth throwing in your bag. Just forget the bulky items like a beach umbrella, beach chairs, snorkel gear, and floatation devices (what hotel doesn’t have these nowadays?). Don’t bother with coolers or beach safes unless you’re driving, and towels can also probably be found at the resort. The only few things left to consider are:

But don’t skimp on clothes, and ones you love to wear—you’ll want to be comfortable so you can focus on the destination. It’s unlikely you need all of the following, but here’s what to consider:

What’s Essential: If you only leave the house with a tote bag’s worth of things, they should be your wallet (ID, cards, maybe some cash), whatever toiletries you require (medications, toothbrush/toothpaste, and makeup and/or face and hair creams you need daily), and a handful of versatile clothing items you love to wear. All of those things can fit into a pretty small amount of space, basic-economy restrictions be damned.

Secret Weapon: Packing cubes that are on the smaller side can help compress everything you need and organize it by type. Also, consider that you’re probably allowed both a carry-on bag and a personal item—which makes a roomy personal item bag a great hack for getting more onto the plane.

Leave at Home: When it comes to a three- to four-day weekend, no one needs half the stuff they pack into their suitcase for a usual longer trip. Step away from the large electronics, any unnecessary creams or gels (the hotel or rental’s will probably suffice for the few days), outfits you’ve never worn before, and pairs of shoes that are questionable when it comes to comfort.

• Always check the weather at your destination at least a day before leaving. This way, you can make sure you have everything you need.
• Confirm with your accommodations to see which toiletries they offer so you don’t have to pack as much. If you’re flying, remember the 3-1-1 rule: all liquids must fit into one 1-quart-sized bag and must be in containers no larger than 3.4 oz/100 mL.
• If you hate to pack or are inexperienced, there are apps  to help you out. There’s one for you, whether you’re a minimalist, a control freak, or just plain lazy. You can get a checklist, weather forecasts, and even activity suggestions for your destination.

No matter where you’re traveling , always make a list before you start packing. This is especially important when planning a trip to the beach since there are some things that are difficult to buy if they’re forgotten. Lists also help keep you from overpacking – something you don’t want to do if you’re flying and luggage space is at a premium. Use an app, write it out on paper, or make one on your phone, but make sure you have a list!

We’ve broken down our packing list into categories to help you stay organized. If you’re not using an app, you may want to do something similar to ensure you don’t miss a thing.

• Waterproof phone case (These also keep sand out that can ruin electronics.)
• Book (Check out these fantastic beach reads . Did you know many airport convenience stores allow you to buy a book and receive money back if you return it on your way back home?)
• iPad/Kindle (Download electronic versions of books and magazines to save luggage space. Pro tip: Many magazine subscriptions offer free electronic access, so that’s an option, too, if you have one.)
• Cell phone, charger, and cord (Make sure to use a spare charger and cord in case you leave them behind, which many people do.)

Toiletries:

• Disposable wipes/hand sanitizer
• Sunscreen and sunscreen lip balm
• After-sun skincare products (Aloe vera gel, lotion, etc.)
• Bug spray or essential oil such as Citronella or Peppermint to repel bugs (Sometimes the wind brings mosquitoes, other times it can bring biting flies, depending on the direction it’s coming from.)

Kid Essentials

• Long-sleeved rash guard with SPF protection
• National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) certified child life jacket or similar item
• Sunglasses (Some toddler/baby sunglasses have an adjustable band that goes around the head. These can double as goggles.)
• Foldable, waterproof sun hat with a chin strap
• Pop-up shade/shelter (These are helpful for changing or napping in while providing sun, wind, and light rain protection.)
• Beach toys and mesh laundry bag for carrying
• Sand free mats
• Hooded towel that dries kids off and doubles as a cover-up
• Diapers/pull-ups
• Swim diapers
• Changing mat
• Change of clothes
• Goggles (Saltwater stings the eyes, even just while walking along the water’s edge.)
• Baby carrier (Take a hands-free walk with your baby attached to you.)

There are things you should absolutely not leave home without, regardless of whether you’re traveling domestically or internationally!

• Copy of vaccine cards (Even if they’re not required at your travel destination, it never hurts to be prepared in case you need them.)
• EpiPen (if needed)
• Over-the-counter items such as Imodium, Benadryl, and pain relievers
• Allergy meds, asthma inhalers, eye drops, and an extra mask
• Ear drops (Safely remove water trapped in ears.)
• Extra hand sanitizer
• Anti-itch cream for bug bites
• Bandaids and Neosporin
• After-sun gel/aloe
• Ace bandage
• List of medications (Refill any you might need a week before your trip.)

Documents/Financial

• Insurance cards
• Passport/visa/ID
• Emergency contact and doctors’ info (Have this stored on your phone and written down.)
• Cash and debit/credit cards (While most places take debit and credit cards, it’s always good to have at least some cash on hand just in case.)

Miscellaneous

• Phone/electronic charger (This is so vital it bears repeating.)
• Plastic quart-sized storage bags that seal shut. (If the one in your carry-on rips, you’ll have a backup. Also, you never know how handy these little guys are when you’re away from home!)

When packing clothing, stick to a color scheme. You can pack just a few pieces, and they will all match.

• Three to four pairs of shorts
• Two pairs of pants
• Three to four shirts
• One formal outfit (A button-up shirt and dress pants are helpful if you plan to go to a nice restaurant.)
• Two to three swim trunks
• Two sets of pajamas
• Five pairs of underwear
• Two to three pairs of socks

• One light jacket or sweater
• One rashguard for additional sun protection in the water (They’re not just for kids!)
• One exercise outfit and running shoes if you plan on working out while you’re on vacation

After a long winter, the anticipation of your first beach vacation of the year is likely akin to the same giddy excitement you felt as a kid during the countdown to the last day of school. But, alas, you’re an adult now and can’t rely on your parents to pack your pool floaties for you anymore.

If you’re staying at a resort , it’s safe to assume you won’t have to pack essentials like beach chairs, umbrellas, and towels. But if you’re lucky enough to snag coveted reservations at an Airbnb beach house this spring break or later this summer, double-check with your host to see what amenities they include. To make sure you don’t show up unprepared—or overpack —use this beach vacation packing list to guarantee you have everything you need for a weeklong trip.

Beach clothing

Avoid overpacking with this easy formula Wendy Mak, author of The Capsule Wardrobe: 1,000 Outfits From 30 Pieces , uses when she travels: Simply multiply the number of tops with the number of bottoms you plan to bring and that’s the number of outfits you’ll be able to create (as long as each top coordinates with each bottom) .

“As a general rule of thumb, if I’m going away for a seven-night beach holiday, I’d pack two to three pieces of swimwear (so that they have time to dry in between), a pair of shorts and a couple of skirts, four tops that match all my shorts and skirts, and a dress in case I go somewhere special,” Mak told AFAR in 2017 . In addition to the swimwear, this eight-piece wardrobe will give you at least 13 outfits for when you’re not lounging on the beach in your suit.

If you plan to exercise, don’t forget your workout gear and sneakers. And even though it could be warm during the day, check the weather and pack extra layers to keep you comfortable at night in case the weather dips after the sun goes down. You wouldn’t want to miss the beach bonfire, would you?

Clothing to pack:

• 2–3 swimsuits (We like Summersalt suits , $45–$125, which are made with recycled polyamide fabric and include sizes 0 to 24.)
• 1–2 swim cover-ups
• Rashguard for additional sun protection in the water
• Polarized sunglasses, like the Maho Positano shades ($195), which include subtle yet effective grips on the ears so you don’t have to worry about them falling off your face in the water.
• Sun hat (the wider the brim the better)
• Four T-shirts or casual tops
• Three pairs of shorts or skirts
• Pants for evenings
• Sweatshirt or light sweater for evenings
• Nicer outfit (dress or button-up and slacks) for dinners out
• Socks and underwear
• Small purse or belt bag
• Workout gear and running shoes
• Flat sandals for daytime, like Nisolo’s woven huaraches, which come in both men’s and women’s sizes ($138–$150) and are made with Leather Working Group Certified leather that’s also water-resistant
• Flip-flops or other rubber beach sandals ( Indosole makes rubber sandals, $26–$60, crafted from recycled tires, for men, women, children, and toddlers.)
• Nicer shoes for evenings out (Espadrilles like the Soludos classic wedges , $115, elevate your look but are still lightweight and let your feet breathe in warm climates.)
• Water shoes to protect your feet from rocks and coral

Before you pack, check the amenities your hotel or vacation rental includes. Most provide beach chairs, umbrellas, and towels you can use during your stay. Otherwise, you’ll want to stick to the essentials for keeping you and your family entertained, hydrated, and comfortable during a day on the sand.

• Waterproof portable speaker, like the JBL Clip 3 ($50), with a built-in carabiner clip
• Beach blanket
• Reusable water bottle
• Insulated travel mug (As more resorts ban single-use cups , we like keeping our rum punch cold on the beach in a reusable Yeti 20 oz. Rambler , $35.)
• Reusable utensils
• Beach games and sand toys
• Books, magazines, or e-reader
• Dry bags, like Osprey’s Ultralight dry sacks (from $18), which come in various sizes and can be used to keep valuables safe from water or to separate your wet clothes from everything else in your bag
• Power bank and charging cords
• Anti-theft beach bag or lock box

In case your accommodations don’t provide them, pack these items:

• Beach chairs
• Beach umbrella or tent
• Beach towels (We like the Nomadix Original Towel , $40; its ultralight and quick-drying micro-terry fabric is made from post-consumer recycled materials.)

You may also want:

• Snorkel gear (Tour operators may provide them, but if you’re a germaphobe, you may want to BYO for peace of mind.)
• Underwater camera, like the GoPro Hero12 Black ($350), which is waterproof down to 33 feet and comes with accessories like a floating hand grip if you purchase it in a bundle directly from GoPro
• Inflatable floats for lounging in the water
• Toddler swim floaties for families traveling with small children
• Swim diapers for babies

Beach toiletries and hygiene items

In addition to the basics you pack every time you travel—toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, razors, etc.—you should pack toiletries to protect you from the sun and any germs you encounter at the beach. Choose a sunscreen that is SPF 30 or greater, water resistant, and broad spectrum so you’re protected against both UVB and UVA rays.

You’ll also want to use a reef-friendly formula that doesn’t use oxybenzone and octinoxate, two ingredients that are banned from being sold in destinations like Hawai‘i and Key West. To calculate the amount of sunscreen you’ll need for your beach trip, the American Academy of Dermatology Association says most adults need about one ounce to cover their body and recommends reapplying every two hours or after swimming.

Toiletries:

• SPF lip balm
• Hand sanitizer
• Wet wipes for disinfecting your hands and getting all the sand off them before you eat
• After-sun lotion
• Bug spray for evenings ( Kinfield’s Golden Hour mosquito repellent , $22, is DEET free and works. Its mix of citronella, lemongrass, and clove smells amazing.)
• First-aid kit, like the Welly Human Repair Kit ($10), which includes adhesive bandages, ointments, hand sanitizers, and more in a refillable tin

After-sun leave-in hair conditioner, like Sun Bum’s Revitalizing 3-in-1 Leave-In Treatment ($13), which detangles, conditions, and protects hair from the damaging effects of the sun and salt water.

Nothing says summer like a classic trip to the beach–but before you can hit the road (or head to the airport, as the case may be), you have to decide what to bring. That’s where this complete beach vacation packing list comes in!

We’ve rounded up all the beach vacation essentials you will need, covering everything from what to wear to the beach to what travel gear you’ll definitely need.

Whether you’re going to be relaxing in soft white sand in the Caribbean, strolling across the pebble beaches of Europe’s many stunning rivieras, enjoying a classic beach vacation in the USA, or something else entirely, this packing list will answer all your questions about what to bring to the beach.

The Most Important Beach Vacation Essentials

Travel gear you should definitely pack for the beach, what to wear on a beach vacation for women, what to wear on a beach vacation for men, other gear for your beach vacation packing list, planning a trip.

Passport + Visa — If you’re traveling internationally, your passport and any applicable visas are an absolute must: there’s no point in packing for your beach trip without them!

Travel Insurance — We don’t ever suggest traveling without travel insurance–anything can happen, and an epic beach vacation is definitely a case of better safe than sorry. We use and recommend Safety Wing for most beach destinations around the world.

Money — We recommend bringing two credit cards (one to use, and one to keep as a backup), and two debit cards. If you’re traveling internationally, ideally bring cards with no foreign transaction fees.

We’ve never felt it necessary to obtain currency before arriving when traveling abroad (we just withdraw from an ATM when we get there), but you can purchase most currencies in your home country if it makes you feel more comfortable.

Sunscreen — If you’re headed somewhere with coral reefs nearby, be sure that your sunscreen is reef-safe! In addition to being important for the environment, this is increasingly required by local laws.

Camera  — We recently upgraded to our  Sony a7R III  and absolutely  adore  it, but whatever camera you’re comfortable with works–just make sure you have something with you to preserve your memories! 

Waterproof Phone Case — Want to be able to take photos when actually swimming at the beach? Bring a waterproof phone case along with you! They’re inexpensive, easy to pack, and make taking photos at the beach far simpler.

Comfortable Day Bag  — We currently use  Pacsafe’s sleek anti-theft backpack  and love it, but if you don’t want to shell out the cash for this trip, that’s totally understandable. Just aim for something comfortable to wear, not flashy, and medium-sized–we used a  Northface Jester backpack  for years and loved it as well.

Water Shoes — If you’re headed to any pebble beaches (these are especially prevalent in Europe), you’ll definitely want to bring along water shoes–your feet will thank you!

Even some sandy beaches can have sharp rocks and shells, especially during those first few feet as you enter the water, so if your feet are particularly sensitive, you may appreciate adding water shoes to your beach vacation packing list regardless of where you’re going.

Beach Tote Bag — Bringing along a beach tote like this that both zips and has multiple pockets will allow you to stay much more organized during your long days on the water.

Snorkel Set — Want to go a step up from just goggles? If you’re planning on doing a lot of snorkeling during your trip to the beach, you may even end up saving money by bringing your own snorkel set instead of renting them each time you want to go.

Reading Material — As much as I adore having beautiful books lined up on shelves, let’s face it–carrying around heavy, bulky books while schlepping back and forth to the beach is way too much of a hassle.

Beach Towels — Whether or not you want to add your own towels to your beach vacation packing list probably depends a lot on where you’re going–they’re easier to bring on a road trip than an international plane ride, for example–but having them with you can make life much easier, especially as many hotels and rentals don’t allow their towels to be taken to the beach.

Conditioner — I won’t cover all the details of different toiletries to bring in this beach packing list–I’m assuming you guys pretty much have yourselves covered there–but it’s worth pointing out that a good conditioner is extra important when visiting the beach. There’s nothing like several days straight of swimming in saltwater to leave your hair dried out and desperate for a little TLC!

Body Lotion — Just like your hair, the saltwater and sun can dry out your skin, as well. Bring your favorite body lotion along and lather up each night!

Trying to decide what exactly to wear to the beach can be a bit of a struggle: you’ll want to balance sun protection, staying cool, and staying active, while also ensuring you have a few nicer outfits on hand–especially if you’re headed to a resort or planning anything a bit dressier, like a date night.

Here’s what to add to your wardrobe for your beach vacation!

Bathing Suits + Coverup

Obviously, we have to start here! I recommend bringing at least two bathing suits, and at least one that you feel comfortable being a bit more active in–so something you can wear swimming, jumping off boats, jet-skiing, etc. This is a great option, and something like this is also cute.

For sun protection, and to be able to turn your bathing suit into a DIY (super) casual outfit in a flash, we recommend also bringing a pretty coverup like this .

You can also use a casual dress to double as a coverup if you prefer: I used this maxi dress as a coverup on our last beach trip.

When picking out dresses to wear on your beach trip, think light, flowy fabrics that will keep you cool.

Sundresses are some of my favorite things to wear on the planet, and I tend to wear them all the time at the beach.

I love this wrap dress (I’m wearing it in the photo below this section), and flowy maxi dresses like this are wonderful as well.

Rompers like this  can also be a fun option if you want an all-in-one outfit that isn’t quite a dress!

Beach vacation outfits are the perfect opportunity to pull out fun tank tops like this !

I also love casual, loose-fit shirts like this to wear with shorts on days spent in town.

Beach trips are the perfect opportunity to pull out casual jean shorts like these , which I tend to wear constantly when walking around beach towns!

Light, flowy skirts like this are also a great option to consider when putting together your beach trip outfits.

When putting together a beach packing list, I generally like to bring three pairs of shoes: a comfortable pair of pretty sandals like these to wear around town, something a bit more substantial like these boat shoes for more active days, and, of course, casual flip-flops to wear down to the beach.

Accessories

When packing for your beach trip, sunglasses and a sunhat definitely belong on your list of beach vacation essentials. I personally love having a baseball cap with me as well.

Be sure to bring a purse with you to bring around town, and if you like to wear jewelry at the beach, I recommend opting for costume jewelry when swimming and playing in the sand.

I’ll be honest–there’s not nearly as much to say about what to wear on a beach vacation for men as there is for women, so this section will be a bit shorter than the women’s section. That being said, here are the beach vacation essentials for men!

Bathing Suits

We recommend bringing at least two bathing suits, which will ideally mean that you always have one drying and one dry to put on. Something like this is a great option.

Casual t-shirts like these are perfect for a beach vacation, and depending on your personal style, you may want to bring some tank tops as well.

If you’re headed to a resort that has a dress code at some restaurants or just have some nicer evenings out planned, light, cool button-down shirts like this are a great choice.

Casual shorts like these are perfect for a beach trip, and if you need a pair of pants, something light like these chinos will keep you (moderately) cool.

A casual pair of boat shoes for around town and a comfortable pair of flip-flops for the beach will likely be the only two pairs of shoes you need for your beach vacation.

When putting together your beach vacation packing list, be sure to include a hat and sunglasses to protect yourself from the sun!

I use them on all boats and the occasional bus, and if things get really bad, take some Non-Drowsy Dramamine as well.

Trust me–you don’t want to risk missing out on the joys of boat rides during your beach trip because of motion sickness!

Basic Medication — Some people prefer to buy medication for basic headaches, fevers, and stomach aches as needed, but who wants to deal with shopping when they’re sick? We’ve never regretted packing our own basic meds.

Aloe Vera Gel — Obviously it’s best to avoid getting a sunburn in the first place, but if you’re prone to them, you may want to add some aloe vera to your beach vacation packing list–just in case.

Beach Games — Are you the kind of person who likes to stay active? When deciding what to bring to the beach, consider throwing in a frisbee, volleyball, or even a couple of buckets and small spades for kids (or kids at heart) to stay entertained throughout the day.

When you’re not lounging on the beach or taking a dip in the ocean, there are plenty of other leisure activities to enjoy during your beach weekend. Here are a few ideas to add to your weekend pack list. These are especially great things to bring to the beach with friends!

No beach weekend is complete without some fun and games. Bring along a frisbee, beach ball, or paddleball set for some classic beach activities. If you’re feeling competitive, consider packing a cornhole or spike ball set for some team play.

Create a beach playlist before you go and bring along a portable speaker to enjoy your favorite tunes while relaxing on the sand. Don’t forget to pack headphones if you want to listen to music while taking a walk or jog along the beach.

If you’re looking for a way to stay active and centered during your beach weekend, consider packing a yoga mat and practicing some beach yoga. The sound of the waves and the fresh ocean air make for the perfect environment to connect with your body and mind.

Many beaches allow bonfires, so consider packing some marshmallows, graham crackers, and chocolate for s’mores. Bring along some blankets and chairs for a cozy evening around the fire with friends and family.

When packing for a beach weekend, it’s important to keep in mind that you want to pack light, but also be prepared for any situation. Here are some tips to help you pack efficiently:

1. Make a List

Before you start packing, make a family beach vacation packing list of everything you need to bring. This will help you stay organized and ensure that you don’t forget anything important. You can also use the list to check off items as you pack them.

2. Pack Versatile Clothing

When it comes to clothing, pack items that can be mixed and matched to create different outfits. This will help you pack lighter and still have plenty of options. Also, bring clothes that are appropriate for the weather and activities you have planned.

3. Bring Sun Protection

Don’t forget to pack sun protection, such as sunscreen, sunglasses , and a hat . The sun can be intense at the beach, and it’s important to protect your skin and eyes.

4. Don’t Forget the Essentials

Make sure to pack your essentials, such as your phone charger, ID, and cash. You don’t want to be caught without these items while you’re away from home.

5. Use Packing Cubes

Packing cubes can be a lifesaver when it comes to organizing your luggage. They help keep your items separate and make it easier to find what you need. Plus, they can help you pack more efficiently and save space in your luggage.

Weekend trips seem like they should be the easiest ones to pack for. But they always end up being the hardest.

Weekends should be simple. The trip is short, the weather won’t vary much, and you probably know what you’ll be doing.

But packing light for a weekend trip can pose a challenge. We all tend to pack as much as we can fit, not just what we need. Whether you’re traveling for a weekend or a month, you’ll probably fill your backpack or suitcase. When you have the space, you start adding stuff you’ll never need, like an extra pair of shoes or a just-in-case outfit.

Your stuff will expand to fill your bag.

To combat this tendency, stick to a short weekend trip packing list and pack a small bag.

3-Day Weekend Packing List

Let’s start off with a quick checklist for a three-day, two-night weekend trip. The packing list below assumes that you leave on Friday, stay Friday and Saturday nights, then return home on Sunday.

For clothing, we’ve included your travel day (or in-flight) clothing in the packing list.

• 1 pair of shoes
• 3 sets of underwear
• 3 pairs of socks (1-2 pairs if wearing merino wool socks )
• 1 set of pajamas
• Toiletry bag
• Water bottle
• Phone, charger , and earbuds or headphones
• Book or Kindle

Consider at least one “nice” outfit depending on your plans. Dressing up—especially if you don’t have to—can make a nice dinner feel like a special occasion when you’re traveling.

Optional Add-Ons

• Eye mask and ear plugs
• Hat, scarf, and/or gloves for winter trips

Pack for trips of one week or more without checking a bag.

Travel Day Outfit

The outfit you wear to travel should be the bulkiest outfit of the trip, especially if you’re flying. Wear your biggest, heaviest clothes—jeans, sweater, boots, jacket—so that you can save space in your bag. If you’re too warm, you can always remove a layer after takeoff and store it in the overhead bin or under the seat in front of you.

If you’re flying, your travel outfit should include a  light jacket with zippered pockets. The pockets will provide extra space for packing things like your wallet, phone, chapstick, boarding pass, and other travel day essentials . The zippers will keep your stuff secured when you go through airport security.

Shoes are always a challenge when packing. It’s easy to convince yourself that you need a second pair, even for a three-day trip. Resist this temptation. Instead, pack one pair of shoes  you can wear all weekend. Your shoes must be comfortable enough for walking all day but nice enough to wear out to dinner.

In the winter, choose warm, comfortable boots. Sandals or sneakers work well in nicer weather. You can always add flip flops for the beach or pool if needed. Most will fit in your backpack’s water bottle pocket.

Electronics

Be careful not to overpack electronics. For such a short trip, you can leave your work computer at home. Since you’ll either be driving or taking a short flight, skip the tablet too. Your flight might be too short to watch a movie anyway.

A Kindle is my favorite in-flight entertainment for short trips. You’ll also have your phone and earbuds if you prefer to listen to music or a podcast.

When it comes to toiletries, take only the essentials. If you can live without it or survive with a different brand for a day or two, leave it at home.

Choose a hotel or an Airbnb that provides basics so that you don’t have to bring soap or shampoo.

• Toothbrush and toothpaste
• Contact solution, if needed
• Basic makeup, if needed
• Soap, shampoo, and conditioner (only if not provided by your accommodation)

Consider if you can pool resources and share the packing burden with your travel companions. Do you each need to bring your own bottle of sunscreen or can one person bring a bottle for everyone to share?

If you forget anything, just grab a cheap option at your destination. You can bring home any leftovers so that you aren’t being wasteful.

Long Weekend Packing List

If you’re staying over Sunday night and heading home on Monday, use this list instead.

• 4 sets of underwear
• 4 pairs of socks (2 pairs if wearing merino wool socks )
• Phone, charger, and earbuds or headphones

Wedding Weekend Packing List

Weddings may require packing a bit more.

You’ll need an extra pair of shoes and one or two extra outfits so that you’re always dressed appropriately. In addition to dress clothes for the wedding, consider what you’ll need for the rehearsal dinner or Sunday morning activities if either will be part of the festivities.

• 2 pairs of shoes (1 pair for the wedding, 1 pair for everything else)
• 5 outfits (1 casual outfit for each day plus the wedding and rehearsal dinner)
• 4 pairs of socks (3 casual, 1 dress)

Best Weekend Backpack

We recommend packing a bag that’s made for travel—not just the old duffel at the back of your closet—especially if you’re flying. You’ll need a bag that’s optimized for packing , getting through security, and being accessible in-flight. Depending on how and what you’re packing, we recommend two options.

Why You Should Pack Last Minute

Packing last minute sounds sacrilegious, especially for Type A travelers. But hear me out.

You don’t need to bring much for a weekend getaway, so you won’t need much planning or packing time.

If you wait until the night before your trip to pack, you can be even more efficient. Check the weather last minute so that you know it won’t change (much). By then, you’ll also know your weekend plans and can pack and dress accordingly.

No need to worry about any “just in case” stuff.

Pack a small backpack and limit yourself to one outfit (or less) per day.

Weekend Packing List (For Any Kind of Getaway)

I love weekend getaways. They can be quite affordable, and I enjoy getting a taste of a destination I might want to revisit. Plus, it’s easier to be a bit spontaneous especially if you’re staying a little closer to home. Just book a hotel, throw a few things in a bag and you’re off! But before you take off, make sure you have everything you need using this weekend packing list.

You need a packing list for your weekend trip

Don’t be tempted to neglect creating a packing list for a shorter trip just because it’s shorter. It’s just as easy to forget something you’ll need for a short getaway as it is for a major international trip. 

While I agonize over packing lists for longer trips (such as packing for a week in Europe ), I tend to underthink my packing list for a weekend trip which has caused problems. 

I cannot tell you how many times I’ve failed to check the weather forecast or think through potential activities for my weekend away and ended up at my destination unprepared.

Now, of course, a weekend vacation packing list is not necessarily one size fits all (so to speak). There are different kinds of weekend trips. 

To help you as much as possible, this post outlines a basic weekend packing list plus variations for warm weather/beach weekends, cool weather weekends and long weekend packing lists.

Basic weekend getaway packing list 

Use this as the base for any weekend away packing list. 

See below for variations you can use to adapt your packing list for warm weather, beach weekends, cool weather, outdoorsy getaways and long weekend trips of three to four days. 

Follow my tips for packing light to help you prioritize your packing needs if you’re flying rather than driving to your weekend getaway. 

Clothing 

• Two pairs of pants (I like to include a pair of dark jeans that I can dress up or down) 
• 1 outfit for a night out (dress or skirt/dressy pants with a dressy top)
• 1 simple set of jewelry to go with everything 
• 1 pair of comfortable shoes for travel or walking. TOMS are my favorite. You can buy them here on Amazon . 
• 1 pair of dressier shoes or basic flats 
• 3 tops (including 1 dressy top or sweater for a night out) 
• Under garments 
• Socks 
• Slippers or flip flops (for walking around in your hotel room or making a quick trip to the ice machine down the hall). I rarely travel without my Havianas ( buy on Amazon ). And these are my favorite slippers on Amazon hands down…perfect for a quick run down the hall for ice.
• Jacket 
• Hoodie or cardigan sweater (great for layering either indoors or outdoors) 

Semi-sarcastic pro tip: checking the weather report for your destination shortly before you pack is key to packing only the things you’ll likely need and making sure you don’t forget what you’ll want to have with you. 

Don’t be like me and forget to pack a swimsuit for a fall beach trip to Hilton Head Island, assuming it would be too cool to swim only to find perfect beach weather when you arrive. 

Yes, I’m still kicking myself about that one. 

Toiletries and personal items 

I never pack shampoo, conditioner or body wash when I stay in a hotel because I know my room will be well-stocked with these items. 

You can always request more from housekeeping if you need them during your stay, and I always take home my “leftovers.” They’re perfect to use on my next weekend visit to family.  

And since I’m not picky about hair styling tools, I prefer to use the hotel-provided hairdryer rather than pack one. One less thing to forget. 

I also save space by taking only the skin care essentials I need for a couple of days. The special treatments and masks can stay at home. 

Flying with a carry-on only? Follow my tips for how to pack a toiletry bag for carry-on only travel to make sure you don’t exceed your liquids allowance. 

• Essential skin care products
• Sunscreen 
• Makeup 
• A few basic OTC medications like Tylenol, Pepto Bismol tablets, sleep aids, etc. 
• Dietary supplements and/or any prescription medications 
• Hair care products
• Hair styling tools 
• Toothbrush/toothpaste/dental floss 
• Deodorant/antiperspirant 
• Perfume/cologne 

Miscellaneous items 

These are those extra items I like to pack to 1) make the journey to my destination more enjoyable and 2) make my hotel stay more comfortable.  

• Book or mobile device with app for reading e-books.
• Snacks for the trip to your destination 
• Re-usable water bottle. Check it out on Amazon . 
• Chargers for all devices (plus a spare)
• Earbuds like this affordable set you can buy on Amazon.  
• Pillow from home (if you’re like me and sleep better with it) 

And yes, if you are wondering, I do cram my pillow into my carry-on suitcase even when traveling to the other side of the planet. 

Pro-tip: when traveling with a personal bed pillow, I use a colorful pillowcase (anything other than plain white) so that I can’t miss it among all the other pillows on the hotel bed and accidentally leave it behind. 

Long weekend packing list option (for up to four days) 

Use the basic packing list above to get you started, then add items to flesh out your wardrobe for an extra day or two. 

• 1 additional “night out” outfit 
• 1 additional pair of pants (more casual or less casual depending on what else you’re packing) 
• 1 additional top  

Use the packing list variations below to customize your list for the season and destination. 

Cool weather/outdoorsy weekend trip packing list option 

When headed off on a weekend trip in the cooler months (or perhaps higher altitudes) take the basic weekend packing list above and adjust as needed for your destination and weather to include things like: 

• Warm and/or waterproof shoes or hiking boots. Buy my favorite hiking shoes on Amazon . 
• Wool socks 
• Wool base layers
• Warm coat 
• Scarf 
• Gloves 
• Waterproof/rain jacket. I love my Columbia ( buy it on Amazon )
• Umbrella 

Warm weather/beach weekend getaway packing list option 

For a weekend in warmer weather (including weekend beach vacations), use the basic packing list and adjust to include summer and beach essentials such as: 

• Swimsuit 
• Water resistant sunscreen 
• Bug spray 
• Sun hat 
• Sunglasses 
• Sandals or water shoes
• Rash guard. Check out this one Amazon.  
• If your hotel or resort doesn’t provide beach towels or offer them to rent (keep in mind that many accommodations don’t want you using your bathroom towel at the pool or beach) plan to bring your own. Buy your own fluffy beach towels on Amazon.

Final thoughts on weekend packing lists 

Weekend getaways are great for when you need a break but don’t have a lot of time or perhaps money to do that. They can also be great for last-minute trips. 

But don’t let the potential last-minute nature of your weekend getaway leave you unprepared.

Using a good weekend getaway packing list will ensure you don’t accidentally leave behind anything you want or need.

Look for a weekender bag with multiple compartments , including a separate shoe/toiletry compartment, for more organized packing. Also opt for a weekender bag that is expandable, such as the one in this luggage set , so you can adjust how much storage space you need depending on the trip.

Some weekender bags may also include a USB charging port, such as this bag , so you can continue to charge your phone while on the go during your weekend trip.

Carry-ons are a practical and time-saving option for short trips, as they provide enough space for essentials and eliminate the need for waiting at baggage claim. They’re also the easiest to transport since they have wheels – So you won’t have to carry anything on your shoulders. 

This carry-on luggage set is the one I use now for most of my travels because for under $100, it’s a great deal and includes everything I need. The backpack in this set also has straps to secure it to the wheeled luggage bag, so your luggage stays together and makes transporting everything a breeze – Not to mention, everything matches. 🙂

My other go-to carry-on suitcase is the Away Bigger Carry On bag. It’s a popular choice among travelers for a reason, and can hold a lot for how compact it is. (I traveled with just this carry-on for several different 1-week trips, and it held everything I needed!)

In addition to what luggage options to opt for when packing for your weekend trip, you will also want to consider a crossbody bag or day bag to use for exploring around your destination.

The best bags for this will strike a balance between size, durability, and convenience. Look for a bag that is spacious enough to carry your essential items for exploring during the day, but not too large and cumbersome. 

Your destination may also play a role when choosing a good day bag for your weekend trip. For example, if you are traveling to a beach destination, you may want to opt for a beach tote. Or for a city weekend escape, you may want a crossbody purse that’s big enough to hold just a few essential items as you’re walking down sidewalks.

Ultimately, the best type of luggage for your weekend trip will depend on your personal preferences, your destination, the activities planned, and the amount of items you want to bring along. Each type has its own unique features and benefits, catering to different travel needs and styles.

How to Pack for a Weekend Trip

Packing carry-on only for a weekend trip or short getaway can save you time, money, and headaches. I personally try to travel with only carry-on luggage for any kind of trip, because I don’t like the potential of my luggage being lost and/or having to wait at the luggage carousel after you land. 

By learning how to pack a carry on bag like a pro, you can minimize your time spent at the airport, save money on checked luggage fees, and make the most of your weekend trip.

Weekend Trip Packing Tips

Here are some essential packing tips to consider for your next weekend getaway.

Once I started using packing cubes for my travels, I never looked back. Packing cubes are great for keeping your luggage organized and maximizing space. They also help to keep your clothes and other essentials neatly separated and easy to find in your luggage.

Some packing cubes also enable you to compress your clothes, which allows you to fit more into your suitcase. This added organization and space-saving benefits make packing cubes a must-have for any traveler.

These packing cubes are the ones I currently use and love, and they have held up great. Look for packing cubes that come in a set and have the extra compression zipper included. 

In addition to using packing cubes, another great way you can give yourself even more space in your luggage is by rolling your clothes. 

Rolling your clothes not only gives you more space, but it also helps to prevent wrinkles and awkward fold creases. 

This technique makes your clothing items a bit more maneuverable, so you can strategically fit more into your packing cubes than you would be able to by just folding. 

One of the best ways to optimize the space in your suitcase for a weekend trip is to pack more versatile items. Choosing pieces that can be mixed and matched to create different outfits will not only help you save space and keep your suitcase light, but it will also give you more outfit options for your getaway. 

A good way to do this is to pack more neutral colors that will go with anything. For example, a great versatile option is a neutral sweater or cardigan – It’s a lightweight piece that can be worn over dresses, paired with jeans and a t-shirt, or even used as a cover-up for the beach or pool. It’s also something that can be dressed up and down for various occasions. 

Black leggings are another great versatile clothing option – I will usually wear these on my travel days during flights and roadtrips, so I bring them with me without even needing to pack them. 

It comes as no surprise that the weather at your destination will play a big part in what you pack for your weekend trip. Checking the weather ahead of time will help you to determine what essential items you need to include on your weekend trip packing list, and prevent any unwelcome surprises at your destination.

This will also help you determine how you pack your suitcase, as you will need to think about how to bring your bulkier items with you – Such as jackets and coats if you are going somewhere cold. 

When you’re packing for your weekend getaway (or any trip, for that matter), it’s a good idea to also leave some room in your luggage for souvenirs or any other fun things you may want to bring home with you.

The key to ensuring there is enough space in your suitcase for souvenirs is to pack light and avoid over-packing.

I t’s finally summer, and that means everybody is dreaming of a beach vacation. But before you head to the coast, you need to decide what to pack. I’ve rounded up all the beach essentials you’ll need in this ultimate beach vacation packing list!

The sun-kissed shores, the soothing sound of waves, and the refreshing ocean breeze await you.

But before you set foot on the sandy paradise, it’s essential to pack everything you’ll need to make the most of your beach getaway.

What to Pack for a Beach Vacation

Are you ready to embark on the ultimate beach vacation? Whether you’re a seasoned beachcomber or a first-time traveler, our comprehensive packing list has got you covered.

The Beach Basics

For a great beach vacation, you’ll want to pack a wardrobe that is light, breezy, and comfortable . You’ll need to be prepared for hot summer weather during the day. But keep in mind that many beaches often get chilly when the sun goes down, so bring a light jacket for that cold wind coming off the ocean.

Don’t forget your bathing suit ! You might consider bringing two swimsuits so you always have a dry one to wear. Rash guards and swim leggings are also a great option for keeping your skin protected from the sun while you swim. For shoes, you’ll want to pack flip-flops , sandals , water shoes , or lightweight tennis shoes .

A wet clothing bag will come in handy for any swimsuits and other clothing that didn’t fully dry before you have to pack up and head home. Nobody wants a suitcase full of damp, sandy clothes! You can bring plastic grocery bags for this purpose or buy special water-resistant bags just for your wet things.

Choose a dedicated mesh or nylon beach bag and have it packed and ready to go with all your beach gear. It’s even better if your beach bag has waterproof pockets inside or a waterproof pouch for storing your keys, wallet, and cell phone. Stock your beach bag with plenty of sunscreen , bug repellant , sunglasses , a hat , a beach blanket , and towels .

Beach Entertainment

Come prepared with things to do while at the beach. What you pack really depends on your beach style.

For some people, a beach chair and a good book is all they really need. If this is your style, you may also want to bring along a sun shelter or an umbrella to provide a little shade.

Kids will love to stay entertained at the beach with sand castle tools and other fun beach toys.

Other great beach entertainment include snorkel gear , floats (my donut inner tube is my favorite thing!), boogie boards , swim goggles , a waterproof camera , and a portable waterproof speaker .

And don’t forget the snacks and water ! It’s always important to stay hydrated at the beach. You can pack it all into a soft-sided insulated cooler bag that will be easier to carry than a bulky cooler.

Beach Clothing to Pack

As previously mentioned, you’ll want to pack comfortable but light-weight clothing suitable for warm weather. This could include shorts and skirts , t-shirts , short sleeves , and summer dresses . You’ll also want to have a light sweater or long sleeve shirt for the cooler nights so you don’t get too chilly.

A swim shirt or rash guard is a great thing to pack if you don’t want to spend all day reapplying sunscreen or if you expect the water to be chilly. Swim leggings are also useful for this purpose.

If you’re planning a romantic beach trip with your significant other, you should pack some dressier outfits for a romantic night out or if you decide to go to a fancy restaurant.

In addition to your beach flip flops and sandals , be sure to pack tennis shoes and socks and any other active wear for any strenuous activity. If you’re looking for beach adventure, like a zipline or horseback riding, these activities may require closed-toed shoes.

And don’t forget to pack your pajamas and underwear ! These items are so easy to forget once you start focusing on your beach packing.

Remember to pack beach-specific toiletries in addition to your regular toiletries.

Since the sun, sand, and salt water can wreak havoc on your hair and skin, make sure you bring along a good moisturizing shampoo , conditioner , body wash , body lotion , and face lotion .

You should also pack plenty of sunscreen , of course. And don’t neglect the SPF lip balm or Chapstick. Be sure to bring along some aloe vera gel as well for any sunburn that might happen.
