I grew up in New Jersey, went to school in Providence, RI and then lived in Southern Florida. Some of my greatest childhood vacations were in Martha’s Vineyard! This list is great!

I have a good experience of Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens because I have been there many of the times in my whole life to explore the beauty of this alluring garden and always spent lovely time there. It is a really good place for fun and tourists can enjoy the hiking and many other most exciting activities.

you said the best time to visit East coast the USA is November to February. I’m planning my trip in mid October. What will you recommend this? Also, tell me how many days will be enough in the US if I just want to explore the Cali and Michigan

Yes, mid October is a great time to visit the East Coast! October/November you might see some leaves changing colors for fall, which is very hard to time right. The US is huge so you would need to save time by flying between California and Michigan. It depends, you can see maybe some of one area of Michigan like Ann Arbor in a weekend, but California is huge and each major city might ideally require at least 3 to 4 days to fully enjoy from: (in order of my favorites): San Diego to San Francisco to LA.

Absolutely October is a great time to visit the East Coast, you might even be lucky to see the fall foliage leaves changing colors! California and Michigan are far apart so it depends on how much you want to see but if you have a limited amount of time at least 3-5 days each per city. Keep in mind California’s many destinations like San Francisco or LA or San Diego can also be far apart too and you need at least 3-5 days for each city in California! Hope that helps! 🙂

From Maine to Florida , the East Coast is home to some beautiful stretches of coastline, amazing views, and of course, remarkable beach towns. Whether you're looking for a summer hotspot full of excitement and entertainment and brimming with crowds, or want to escape to a quieter small town this season, the shores on the East Coast have a little something for everyone. From charming, historic New England towns to tropical Southern getaways, there is so much to explore this summer.

There are 14 states that make up this stretch of the US, and each one has its own atmosphere, climate, and culture. From Cape Cod to the Florida Keys , the Atlantic Seaboard is home to a wide variety of vacation destinations. Here are 14 of the best East Coast beach towns in the US.

Bar Harbor, ME

Bar Harbor, Maine

Much of Maine's Mt. Desert Island is covered by Acadia National Park —home to climbs like Cadillac Mountain and a sophisticated system of carriage roads financed by John D. Rockefeller Jr. But on the island's northeast corner, charming Bar Harbor is a destination in its own right. Skirting Frenchmen Bay, Bar Harbor began drawing visitors as far back as the mid-19th century when some of the Hudson River School, a group of artists that included the likes of Thomas Cole and Frederic Edwin Church, were taken with Maine's Down East landscapes. Still picturesque, Bar Harbor is now a full-fledged tourist town with a bustling main street, whale-watching tours, and of course, easy access to Acadia.

Rockport, MA

Rockport, Massachusetts

The North Shore, a group of towns in Greater Boston, is a culturally important swath of Massachusetts. The coastal region is known for its excellent seafood, beautiful beaches, and historic landmarks. Many a good film has been filmed here as well, such as Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island and Kenneth Lonergan’s Manchester-by-the-Sea . There are many towns worth visiting, but Rockport is a favorite among travelers. Forty miles north of Boston, the town has a can't-miss natural gem in Halibut Point State Park, from which visitors can spot Maine in the distance 80 miles away. Rockport is also beloved by art history buffs: it is home to Motif Number 1, a fishing shack with the superlative “the most-often painted building in America.” It was built in 1840, and was a popular subject because it represented New England’s nautical character. (And it didn’t hurt that the light hit it just so.) A replica was built promptly following the historic Blizzard of 1978, which destroyed the original. Oak Bluffs, MA

Oak Bluffs, Massachusetts

Ferries deliver day trippers to this little Martha’s Vineyard town daily and the colorful gingerbread houses for which Oak Bluffs is known are straight out of a storybook. Visitors walk straight off their boats into Ocean Park, a circular green overlooking the sea, encircled by said houses, with a frothy, delicate gazebo sitting in the center. Oak Bluffs has a long history of welcoming Black visitors, and today it is home to the annual African-American Film Festival .

While technically not a beach town itself, this popular peninsula in Massachusetts is home to over a dozen towns worth checking out, and is a vacation hotspot for good reason. While it really heats up during the summer, it's a beautiful destination year-round, and is brimming with history (head to nearby Plymouth to see where the Mayflower docked). Not only does it offer the best New England summer atmosphere, it's also home to exciting activities and small town summer charm. Here, you can spot wildlife, like whales ( Cape Cod is near their migration path) and seals, indulge in delicious seafood, and enjoy miles upon miles of sandy coastline. The Upper Cape is best for families, the Mid-Cape is perfect for escaping the crowds, and the Lower Cape is home to great luxury hotels .

Newport, RI

Newport, Rhode Island

Like Oak Bluffs, Newport is a beach town known for its houses, though a very different sort. Ten enormous, historic mansions—once the summer homes of the Vanderbilts, Nevada silver heiresses, and other Westerners of unimaginable wealth—remain standing along the famous cliff walk. Today however, they are museums. The most famous two are The Breakers and Rosecliff. The Newport mansions famously earned the ire of writer Joan Didion, who wrote in her essay The Seacoast of Despair, “To stand in the dining room of ‘The Breakers’ is to imagine fleeing it, pleading migraine.” Today, in lieu of the Great Gatsby -esque lawn parties of yore where swans roamed the grounds, Newport attracts visitors of all stripes for events such as the Newport Folk Festival.

Montauk, NY

Montauk, New York

The final stop on the eastern tip of Long Island, Montauk is appropriately known as the End. Due to strong winds, rough surf, and ample preserved land, it really does feel like the edge of the world, here. (Although some residents of Long Island’s furthest out town argue that if you really think about it, it’s actually the Beginning.) Montauk feels more remote and low-key than its luxurious, sceney Hamptons counterparts. Every visit to Montauk should include a stop at the Montauk Point Light House, which was commissioned by President George Washington in 1796. It is still operating, and the panoramic views from the top are out of this world.

The site of pink triple-decker Victorian homes and a lively, festive promenade that exists as a beach town ideal in America's collective imagination, Cape May is the sort of dreamy summer destination one associates with trails of melted ice cream dotting the hot pavement and Fourth of July picnics. National Geographic also labeled Cape May as the World's Best Destination for Birding , writing, “The narrow peninsula at Cape May acts as a bird funnel, bringing in songbirds during their spring and fall migrations. At dawn on a good day, legendary Higbee Beach offers front-row seats to a feathered fashion show… With a little luck, you can see 20 species of warblers, each in its own colorful costume.” Sign us up.

Chincoteague, VA

Chincoteague, Virginia

You won't find bustling boardwalks, sleek hotels, or grids of cars with clunky bike racks trapped in traffic in Chincoteague. This coastal town is all about the wildlife—specifically its wild horses . Visitors flock to the island annually for the Pony Penning that has been held since 1925. The Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Department holds the event, and it consists of a pony swim—in which the animals cross the Assateague Channel—and a pony auction. No one really knows how this population of horses came to be, though there are competing theories. Some say they are descendants of Spanish horses shipwrecked en route to Peru in the 17th century. Others claim they were left long ago by pirates. Still others say they are runaways from mainland farmers. The quaint beauty of Chincoteague includes trails for hiking, beaches, and a red and white lighthouse. For the best pony views, cross over on a bike to the Maryland side of Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge.

Ocean City, MD

There is no place quite like the Chesapeake Bay . Step foot here and breathe in the saltwater air, indulge in delicious seafood, and enjoy the gorgeous beaches. The seaside resort town of Ocean City offers fun for the whole family—stroll down the boardwalk and taste the saltwater taffy to start, then take your pick of activities for all ages: surfing, fishing, and kayaking included. If you're looking for something a little less busy, the nearby small town of Berlin (just a 15-minute drive away) is great for a quick trip or overnight stay to avoid the crowds, but will take you away from the gorgeous shoreline. A little farther away is the historic small town of St. Michaels , worth a visit just to explore the history and see the picturesque neighborhood on the water.

Nags Head, NC

Nags Head, North Carolina

Nags Head is a beach town on the Outer Banks , a group of barrier islands and spits sandwiched between mainland North Carolina and the Atlantic Ocean. It's known for its sand dunes in Jockey Ridge State Park, which comprise the tallest true sand dune system on the East Coast. Hundreds of shipwrecks nearby—caused by the region's shifting sands and heavily trafficked waters—have given the surrounding waters the moniker “Graveyard of the Atlantic,” and the nearby USS Huron is a popular scuba dive site.

Pawley's Island, SC

Pawleys Island, South Carolina

Pawleys Island is so small that its year-round population hovers around 100 people. It was first settled in the 1500s, making it one of the oldest beach towns in the US. With that amount of history, there is, of course, a ghost story to go with it: There have been sightings of the Gray Man, a ghost whose appearance is said to warn of hurricanes as he paces up and down the beach, dating to a 19th-century storm. Summer options on Pawleys Island that are not at all spooky—besides flopping around on the beach—include golf, fishing, walking sculpture-filled gardens, and feasting on Lowcountry cuisine like She Crab soup.

Myrtle Beach, SC

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

While it's not too far from the aforementioned Pawleys Island, Myrtle Beach will feel worlds away from the slow, small-town atmosphere of the other quaint town. This popular summer destination boasts bigger crowds than its neighbor, and has a wide assortment of entertainment, dining, nightlife, and activities available. Aside from the deliciously warm weather and miles of beaches to traverse, Myrtle Beach is also home to a great many golf courses, amusement parks, water parks, and an iconic boardwalk with a massive 187-foot-tall Ferris Wheel.

Tybee Island, GA

Tybee Island, Georgia

Just a short drive from Savannah , Georgia, this coastal community is in the perfect spot for a day trip . Even during the summer, some parts of it manage to maintain that small-town vibe and don't get unbearably crowded, boasting an assortment of adorable ice cream and coffee shops, long stretches of sandy beaches, and great waterfront access. There's a little something for everyone from families to couples— South Beach is better for those who want a little excitement in their atmosphere, whereas North Beach is a bit more quiet and contained. I've found it particularly great for families (having traveled here with a multigenerational group ages 1-68), and recommend the kitschy Original Crab Shack for a memorable meal.

• For couples: Historic cottage with complimentary golf cart, bikes, and kayaks

Siesta Key, FL

Siesta Key, Florida

While we love the beach towns listed above, the only part of the East Coast that has a true tropical climate is the lower half of Florida. Naturally, the beaches in this area are very beautiful. We want to laud Siesta Key in particular for its fine sand, which comes from the Appalachian Mountains and is made up almost entirely of cool and reflective quartz, its waterfront dining and drinking, and its excellence for water sports like parasailing. The three beaches to visit on Siesta Key are Siesta Beach, Crescent Beach, and Turtle Beach.

The East Coast has a lot to offer including historical attractions, beautiful beaches and stunning coastline, national parks and mountains, incredible fall foliage, charming towns and large must see cities.

Some of these must see places I have already visited and recommend and the rest are places that I have added to my personal East Coast USA bucket list for future travel. So read on if you are looking for inspiration and ideas for your next East Coast vacation or road trip.

What States are in the East Coast?

The East Coast includes all the coastal states that have shoreline on the Atlantic Ocean: Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida. The East Coast region of the USA also includes Vermont, Pennsylvania, Washington, D.C. and West Virginia even though they do not have coastal access to the Atlantic.

Maine Bucket List

• Explore Acadia National Park in Bar Harbor, one of the best National Parks in the US. Here is a self guided driving tour you can use to explore the park.

• Visit Portland, a charming coastal city packed with historic landmarks.
• Visit Kennebunkport, a historic coastal town in southern Maine known for its beaches and being home to the summer home of the Bush family.

New Hampshire Bucket List

• Explore the stunning White Mountains, a mountain range with many hiking spots of all levels.
• Drive Kancamagus Highway , a 34.5 mile scenic drive along Route 112 and one of the best New England drives for fall foliage. For those that prefer not to drive, you can visit on a fall foliage day trip tour from Boston .

The city is especially beautiful (but crowded) during the annual National Cherry Blossom Festival in the spring.

Virginia Bucket List

• Visit Luray Caverns , the largest and most popular caverns in the East Coast.

• Drive the Blue Ridge Parkway, a National Parkway and America’s longest linear park known for its scenic beauty. South Carolina Bucket List

• Visit the charming city of Charleston.
• Visit Myrtle Beach, a vacation resort known for golf and a beach with a boardwalk and music variety shows.
• Visit Hilton Head Island , offering 12 miles of pristine beaches and several golf courses. If you visit between May and October, you can see the sea turtles that visit the beaches to lay their nests. There is a ferry service from Savannah, Georgia .

• Drive from Miami to Key West on the scenic Overseas Highway (one of the best American road trips ).

The United States of America began in the cities and towns of the East Coast, from the landing at Plymouth Rock, Massachusetts  by European settlers in the 17th century, to the battles for independence against England in the Revolutionary War, to the drafting of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. Boston and Philadelphia, in particular, feature attractions that appeal to tourists' thirst for knowledge about this nation's colonial past.

While this part of the country harbors much of the nation's early history, it is also strikingly modern and features the country's biggest and most bustling cities. New York City, one of the most visited cities in the world, is the financial and cultural capital of the country; meanwhile, Washington, D.C., the capital city of the United States, is more than just the seat of government, but a young, vibrant town booming with new restaurants, bars, and activities for every type of traveler.

In comparison to the popular destinations in the western USA , the destinations of the East are relatively near one another, making it possible to visit them all over a two-week vacation. But note that each area, particularly New York City and New England, are ideal as stand-alone itineraries. New York City, New York

There have been songs written about it and countless movies made in the City That Never Sleeps: New York, New York. The Big Apple is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, let alone in the USA. And that's because New York has everything: landmarks, Broadway shows, five-star restaurants, luxury and boutique shopping, fabulous people-watching opportunities, and much more.

Some things not-to-miss: The dazzling lights of Times Square, walking over the ​ Brooklyn Bridge, eating soup dumplings in Chinatown, sailing around the Statue of Liberty, having a picnic in Central Park, and these  11 best free landmarks and attractions .

This famous city is somewhere you absolutely must see before you die, with some of the best restaurants and finest hotels on the East Coast. Whether you're visiting for a romantic date in NYC or just want to do some  discount shopping  or spend the day browsing the collections of one of the city's many fine  museums , there's something for everyone in the Big Apple.

Washington, D.C.

Washington, D.C., is particularly popular with American travelers who come to visit the many monuments and institutions in the nation's capital, including these top tourist sites . There are, of course, obvious can’t-miss locations like the Lincoln Memorial and the Smithsonian Museums , but the Founding Fathers created a beautiful capital city worth exploring in full with many tributes to them throughout D.C.

As home to over 180 foreign embassies and consulates, D.C. also has a world-class flair worth checking out, and, of course, there are those famous cherry blossoms. Whether you're visiting D.C. with kids or are a business traveler to the city, there's plenty to do in Washington on your trip—from getting  tickets to tour the White House  to potentially meet the president to a ​ one-day tour of Washington, D.C . Just make sure you remember to book your Washington, D.C. hotel in advance as rooms fill up quickly, especially during the busy tourist season.

Boston, Massachusetts

The United States was born in New England, and Boston has played a pivotal role in our progress as a nation, making this part of the country an essential stop for anyone with a penchant for learning about U.S. history.

In a nutshell, Boston has everything from historical landmarks like the nearby Plymouth Rock  to nature travel, from sporting attractions to delicious seafood restaurants in nearby quaint seaside suburbs. Be sure to check out these  top attractions , or if outdoor sports are more your thing, visit some of these skiing and riding destinations within two hours of Boston . Sports fans can also check out the  Red Sox  at the famed Fenway Park, where they've played since 1912.

If you’re looking for a different New England experience, check out the  Museum of Bad Art  to celebrate failed attempts at beauty or, for something more patriotic, stop into one of  America's Largest Fourth of July Celebrations .

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Another favorite city of America's Founding Fathers, Philadelphia has many important colonial attractions such as Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell, which rank among the  top historic tourist destinations  on the East Coast.

This city is also home to great neighborhoods and markets, such as one of the oldest farmer's markets in the U.S. called the Reading Terminal Market ; premier art museums such as the Philadelphia Museum of Art , and fabulous food—don't leave without trying a Philly cheesesteak and some Pennsylvania Dutch fare!

From  walking tours of Old City  to an evening of dancing, Philadelphia has all the attractions of New York City at a slower pace, perfect for midwestern and west coast travelers alike to get accustomed to the hustle and bustle associated with the East Coast.

Baltimore, Maryland

From touring the historic ships that brought workers to the city through the  Inner Harbor  to antique shopping at Fells Point , the city of Baltimore may be a little less popular than others on this list, but that doesn't mean it's not a great destination for your east coast travels.

With plenty of unique art galleries  and tourist attractions like the National Aquarium , Baltimore offers visitors of all ages plenty of opportunities to explore for a fraction of the cost of some of the other East Coast cities. Be sure to stop into some area bars and restaurants—you won't want to miss Baltimore's specialty: crab cakes .

Richmond, Virginia

The capital city of Virginia, ​ Richmond , offers a nice blend of historical destinations and trendy new restaurants and bars, making it an ideal vacation for a casual weekend trip or a romantic getaway with someone you love—just be sure to check out these romantic Richmond destinations before you go!

In terms of history, Virginia has also played its part in the founding of America, but it's even more prominent as the site of our country's greatest internal battle: the Civil War. Reexperience the Civil War through the perspectives of the Union, the Confederacy, and the African Americans who fought for either side at the American Civil War Center at Historic Tredegar or step back in time at the Maymont Mansion, a house museum from the Gilded Age that provides walking tours of life back in the 1800s.

Asheville, NC

Tucked into the quiet Great Smoky (Blue Ridge) Mountains of western North Carolina, the  city of Asheville  has become a popular destination for nature-lovers, hippies, and artists of all sorts hoping to soak in some of the creative energy this city's been known to produce.

Not only that, ​ Asheville  is also full of some great historical sites like the Biltmore Estate, the largest privately-owned house in the United States that was built by the wealthy Vanderbilts in the late 1800s at the height of the Gilded Age. Whether you just want to escape into nature along the Blue Ridge Parkway or want to spend some time exploring the many artists' studios the city has to offer, Asheville makes for a great weekend getaway adventure.

Savannah, Georgia

The coastal city of  Savannah, Georgia  is perhaps one of the best-maintained pieces of history in the United States, a place where Southern charm meets Eastern hustle in the oldest city in Georgia.

Home to the National Historic Landmark district (the nation's largest), the world's longest live oak tree-lined avenue, and some of the most haunting cemeteries around, Savannah is sure to delight guests of all ages who venture down to this southeastern city. If you're a fan of southern cooking, this city is  the  place to get it—it even has Food Network star Paula Deen's famous restaurant right in the heart of downtown!

Charleston, SC

A perfect companion city to Savannah, Charleston offers visitors a chance to step back in time simply by walking down the brick streets of this charming southeastern town. 

You can take a tour of Historic Charleston on the Gateway Walk to discover some of the most interesting pieces of architecture in the city,  or you can just spend the afternoon casually sipping from a specialty cocktail at one of the city's famed rooftop bars. As an added bonus, since none of the buildings can be taller than the churches, you can pretty much see the whole of Charleston from any rooftop in the city!

Atlanta, GA

Home to one of the largest airports in the world and one of the most diverse populations in the United States, Atlanta is a thriving metropolis in the heart of Georgia offering everything from world-class sports arenas to artists havens like the Little Five Points neighborhood to visitors and residents alike.

Thanks to the job boom and the filming of several major TV shows and movies in the area during the mid-2010s, Atlanta has grown into one of the biggest and busiest cities in the southeastern United States, attracting all sorts of new businesses to the area including some of the best restaurants in the region. Be sure to check out the locations for film scenes and enjoy a drink at one of ​ Atlanta's many bars .

Nearby, you'll also find plenty of outdoor activities like tubing on the Chattahoochee River or hanging out at one of the area's many lakes and beaches . No matter what type of outdoor adventure you enjoy, you're sure to find an outlet for it in Atlanta.

Providence, RI

The capital of Rhode Island (and its largest city), Providence , offers guests a variety of entertainment options including European-style gondola rides, exploring Colonial houses, and even the bacon at Providence's famous Kitchen Restaurant.

The Roger Williams Park (and Zoo) are popular destinations during the summer, featuring a full lineup of events throughout the season, but you'll also want to visit the Rhode Island School of Design's Museum of Art and the 1916-built Trinity Rep theatre for a taste of culture in this thriving metropolitan city.

Annapolis, MD

Both the capital of Maryland and the "sailing capital of the United States," Annapolis is a nautical town on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay offering visitors and residents alike beautiful vistas amongst stunning, historic architecture.

Be sure to catch the annual Spring Sailboat Show or just casually wander down the busy streets near the Naval Academy until you find a quaint bar to grab a cheap drink. There's plenty of​ other  events year-round in Annapolis, too, so don't let the sailing obsession distract you from visiting this great northeastern city.

Portsmouth, NH

A port city modeled after one by the same name in England, Portsmouth, New Hampshire is full of 17th and 18th-century homes beautifully restored and maintained, giving residents and guests alike a chance to see how our Founding Fathers lived when they originally settled the United States.

The Strawbery Banke Museum is one of the most popular tourist destinations in this quiet 21,000-population town, where costumed staffers prepare traditional crafts while regaling guests with stories of the city's foundation. Also be sure to check out the changing foliage around the city during the fall months—but come early as the winter sets in quick this far to the northeast —as well as the many gay-friendly bars this city has become known for.

Killington, VT

Also tucked away in one of the farthest northeastern states in the United States, the quiet ski resort town of Killington, Vermont offers tourists a chance to explore the great outdoors with all the comforts of a modern city.

If you're a fan of fall foliage, be sure to visit the K-1 Gondola Ride at Killington during September and October. The peak of the mountain at Killington Park affords guests the opportunity to look across five states and Canada to take in all the wonder of the changing leaves.

There are so many incredible places to visit on the east coast USA during a road trip.

As part of our three-month American road trip, we traveled down the east coast of the USA and came across so many places I’d never heard of before.

Though I’d been on a family road trip in New England , many places on the east coast were unfamiliar to me.

Being British, we hear about East Coast cities like New York and Boston, and we know about Florida, but the bit in the middle is largely unknown to us.

Little did I realize that the true magic resided in the hidden gems scattered along the 1000+ mile stretch in between these popular places on the east coast.

As we continued down the east coast, I was pleasantly surprised to discover so many beautiful towns, cities, and gorgeous beaches, each offering something unique. These lesser-known spots proved to be the real highlights of our American road trip and are some of the best unique things to do on the east coast.

While many USA road trip routes bypass the heart of America’s East Coast, that should not deter you from checking them out. West Coast USA road trips are popular with nature lovers, but the East Coast shouldn’t be neglected either.

This blog post covers some of the best places to visit on the east coast of the USA. From cities and destinations, you’ll have heard of, to some you won’t have.

Whether it’s your first road trip or you’re a seasoned traveler, we guarantee that these top East Coast destinations will make you fall in love with this remarkable region in a whole new way.

Lake Winnipesaukee, New Hampshire

If you’re in need of a quiet getaway, pack your bags for Lake Winnipesaukee.

This beautiful lake in the state of New Hampshire is the largest lake in the state. It’s surrounded by stunning views, making it an ideal place to visit on an east coast vacation.

This place is a watersports paradise in the summer. You can sail across the calm waters, delve into fun activities like kayaking, swimming, or jet skiing, or simply relax by the lakeside and enjoy the serene ambiance.

Surrounding the lake are majestic mountains, offering plenty of opportunities for scenic drives and hiking, with trails suitable for all fitness levels.

The autumn season here is particularly special too as the trees change color to form a stunning sight of red, orange, and yellow.

The Berkshires, Massachusetts

The Berkshires in Western Massachusetts is a cabin lover’s paradise and another east coast gem that nature lovers shouldn’t miss.

The area is particularly stunning during the fall foliage season when the mountains and forests stay alive with vibrant colors.

The summer season is great too since you can enjoy some incredible hikes, go kayaking on the Housatonic River or enjoy the local food and drink scene. There are lots of farms and places to enjoy fresh, farm-to-table meals. My favorite!

Rainy day? No problem! There are plenty of indoor activities to keep you engaged. Some of the top museums in the region are the Norman Rockwell Museum, featuring works of the iconic American artist; Mass MoCa, an avant-garde art museum; and Hancock Shaker Village, providing insights into Shaker lifestyle and culture.

Boston, Massachusetts

Boston is my parents’ favorite city on the east coast and has both plenty of history as well as a great food and drink scene and ‘cool’ things to do.

Historical sites like the Freedom Trail, a 2.5-mile long path passing 16 significant sites; Faneuil Hall, the “Cradle of Liberty”; and Beacon Hill, with its quaint cobblestone streets and Federal-style rowhouses, are glimpses into the city’s past.

Check out Newbury Street, renowned for its shops and eateries; the Rose Kennedy Greenway, a green urban oasis; and Boston Harborwalk which has stunning views of the city’s waterfront on your east coast vacations too.

Indulge in Boston’s culinary scene, relishing fresh seafood or trying out multicultural dishes, and don’t forget to sample the decadent desserts!

The city’s lush parks like Boston Public Garden and Boston Common are perfect for leisurely walks too.

Salem, Massachusetts

Salem to the north of Boston, is a unique place to visit on America’s east coast. Shrouded in American history it’s a fascinating destination (especially around Halloween!).

Salem is famous for its 17th-century witch trials, a dark chapter in history that you can explore through sites like the Witch Trial Memorial and the Old Burying Point Cemetery. The Witch Museum offers an immersive insight into this historical event.

For lighter entertainment, take on a journey aboard the Fame Schooner, or spend a day at Salem Willows Park, featuring arcade games, kiddie rides, and gorgeous seaside views. And for beer enthusiasts, don’t miss out on Salem Beer Works, a microbrewery with a rotating selection of handcrafted beers.

Cape Cod, Massachusetts

Cape Cod is a hook-shaped peninsula in Massachusetts where you can enjoy cute fishing villages, gorgeous beaches and enjoy watching (or going) sailing!

Cape Cod is best visited in the summer and some of the best things to do there are to drive along the Old King’s Highway. On this route, you’ll find loads of seaside towns and miles of sandy beaches. Or, visit Provincetown for its vibrant art scene, or escape to Chatham for a tranquil retreat.

When it comes to places to go in the east coast, nearby islands, Martha’s Vineyard, and Nantucket are just a ferry ride away, and also worth visiting.

The Cape is also a gastronomical delight, with local seafood being a must-try.

Booking a sightseeing tour to see the whales in this area is well worth doing. We did this on a family trip and saw SO many!

And while summer is the high season, visiting Cape Cod in the winter gives you a chance to see its stunning, snowy landscapes, providing a unique beauty all its own.

Portland, Maine

Portland in Maine, (not the Portland in Oregon !) is a coastal town that combines the old and the new beautifully.

The Old Port district boasts 19th-century brick buildings, cobblestone streets, quaint craft shops, and bookstores that give a sense of stepping back in time. For art aficionados, the Portland Museum of Art hosts renowned exhibitions and houses impressive permanent collections.

One of the main places to visit in Portland Maine is the Portland Head Light, the oldest operational lighthouse in the U.S. Seafood lovers should not miss trying out local lobster delicacies at restaurants like Eventide Oyster.

For outdoor lovers, the city offers beautiful parks, boat tours, and opportunities for whale watching.

New Haven, Connecticut

If you’re looking for a mix of academic life and coastal vibes, New Haven in Connecticut is a destination to consider.

As the heart of Connecticut’s culture and home to Yale University, this city effortlessly combines the grand educational establishment of Yale and its rich history with a relaxed beachfront vibe.

Wander around Yale’s impressive campus, drink in the architecture, and explore the Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History.

Once you’ve had your fill of academia, head to Lighthouse Point Park, a delightful spot where the locals hang out. Swim in the Sound, enjoy a picnic under a pavilion, or just appreciate the views from the tall, white lighthouse that keeps watch over the beach.

White Mountains, New Hampshire

The White Mountains in New Hampshire are an adventurer’s paradise.

Packed with lush forests, babbling brooks, impressive gorges, and cascading waterfalls, it’s a visual feast that’s a must-see on any New England road trip.

If you love the great outdoors, carve out some time for the Kancamagus Highway and Franconia Notch State Park.

For something different, shopping lovers will enjoy North Conway’s outlets and antique shops.

Check out the iconic Omni Mount Washington Resort, and take advantage of the local attractions such as horseback rides, moose safaris, and river tubing. For the more adventurous, conquer challenging mountain climbs, including the famous Mount Washington!

Ithaca, New York

Ithaca may not be as well-known as other east coast destinations, but it’s a cool little town with a lot to offer.

Home to Cornell University, this town is enriched with academia and nestled in scenic beauty, featuring stunning waterfalls and gorges.

For things to do in Ithaca , check out the Ithaca Gorge and take a hike on the Cascadilla Gorge Trail.

It might be off the beaten path, but Ithaca is well worth a detour for its blend of natural beauty, vibrant student life, and delicious treats.

New York City, New York

There’s a reason why New York City is on everyone’s USA bucket list . It’s a city that offers a bit of everything, from diverse international cuisine to high-end shopping, street art, spacious parks, and iconic landmarks.

Whether you have 48 hours in New York City or a bit longer, be sure to check out the towering Statue of Liberty, the artistic riches of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the awe-inspiring Empire State Building, or the historic Brooklyn Bridge, NYC has something for everyone.

Take a stroll in Central Park or along the High Line with a coffee from a great New York City cafe or catch a Broadway show to complete your NYC adventure.

Though often expensive, you can find budget hotels in New York if you know where to look.

Finger Lakes, New York

A haven of nature and vineyards, Finger Lakes in New York is an idyllic escape from the hustle and bustle.

Characterized by its finger-shaped lakes, the region boasts some of the most breathtaking scenery on the east coast.

Watkins Glen State Park is a must-visit for its awe-inspiring gorges and after a day of hiking, unwind with a glass of wine at Seneca Lake.

With 11 lakes in total, you’ll need a week or more to explore this area properly!

Though it was the middle of winter during our visit, the lakes were still impressive even when covered in snow. However, it’s definitely summer that is the best time to visit the Finger Lakes in New York State.

Adirondack Mountains, New York

For those who enjoy outdoor adventures, the Adirondack Mountains in New York are a must visit.

You can hike, fish, and boat in the summer, or ski during winter.

If the weather is harsh, head inside and visit places like the Wild Center natural history museum, and the Olympic Training Center, or shop in small-town boutiques and galleries.

The Hamptons, New York

For a stylish getaway, there’s no place quite like the Hamptons. This upscale locale on the eastern end of Long Island offers charming seaside villages, excellent eateries, a stunning coastline, and beautiful beaches.

Visit East Hampton and Montauk, relax at Cooper’s Beach, and take a walk in the Hither Hills.

When it comes to what to do in The Hamptons, lounge on the beach, golf, or shop in the summer; enjoy the fall foliage and wine tours in autumn; and experience a festive holiday wonderland in winter.

The Hamptons offer a luxurious escape in every season, just make sure you’re prepared for the price tag!

Niagara Falls, New York

Niagara Falls in Upstate New York is an awe-inspiring sight that you shouldn’t miss. With the highest water flow rate in North America, the power and majesty of these three falls will leave you speechless.

When you’re there, you can feel the might of nature in the thunderous roar and refreshing mist. Taking a Maid of the Mist boat tour from the Canadian side (arguably the best side to visit the falls), is a must-do in summer. Wearing a blue poncho, you’ll get to see the American Falls and Canada’s Horseshoe Falls up close.

Beyond the falls, explore Buffalo, an underappreciated city in Western New York with its own top attractions such as buffalo wings which you simply have to try in Buffalo!

Lake Placid, New York

Imagine relaxing by a lake, surrounded by the Adirondack mountains in upstate New York. Well, you can do just that at Lake Placid in New York State.

During the summer, the area offers hiking, waterskiing, swimming, canoeing, and kayaking.

Then, in the winter you have the chance to try winter sports like skiing and bobsledding, thanks to its history as a two-time Winter Olympics host. The lake itself, Mirror Lake, becomes a natural ice rink in the winter, providing more fun outdoor activities.

Shenandoah National Park, Virginia

Shenandoah National Park is a paradise in Virginia with so many beautiful viewpoints and places to see.

Expect to see sprawling wildflowers, rolling hills, stunning waterfalls, and green forests, and keep your eyes peeled for wildlife like deer, bears, and bobcats.

There are two visitor centers, Dickey Ridge and Harry F. Byrd, where you can gather information and maps so you can pick out where you want to explore the most.

With 200,000 acres to explore, there’s plenty of space for everyone. The park offers over 400 miles of trails for hiking, catering to all skill levels.

Blackwater Falls State Park, West Virginia

Blackwater Falls State Park, in West Virginia, is a perfect choice for people looking for an East Coast destination where you can get out into nature.

The park is named after the stunning Blackwater Falls, a 57-foot cascade that’s a dream for photographers.

You can also visit Elaka Falls, Pendleton Point Overlook, and Lindy Point.

Stowe, Vermont

Stowe in Vermont offers visitors a chance to experience some of Austria in this New England town in America.

There’s the cool Trapp Family Lodge founded by the Von Trapp family who fled Austria during WWII and you can indulge in farm-to-table dining, outdoor activities, and local beers. Visit the Alchemist Brewery for their IPAs and the Ben and Jerry’s Factory for ice cream and a factory tour.

Winter draws skiers from all over to enjoy the slopes at Mount Mansfield, while other seasons offer activities like mountain biking and hiking.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Philadelphia is the largest city in Pennsylvania and the sixth most populous U.S. city.

The city is famously known as the birthplace of the United States, with the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall, where both the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution were signed.

Here, you can trace the footsteps of the nation’s founding fathers through the cobblestone streets and take a glimpse into the past.

Philly is not just about the past, though. It’s a lively city with a thriving arts scene. The Philadelphia Museum of Art, with its iconic “Rocky Steps”, houses a vast collection of works from all over the world.

For the foodies, the city offers a wide array of culinary delights. From the world-famous Philly cheesesteak to the Reading Terminal Market, where you can enjoy everything from Amish specialties to fresh seafood, Philadelphia will satisfy your tastebuds. And for the beer lovers, there’s a thriving craft brewing scene you’ll want to try to wash down all that food.

The Poconos, Pennsylvania

The Poconos in the northeastern corner of Pennsylvania is a pretty part of this state where you’ll find mountains, forests, lakes, and rivers. In fact, there are over 150 lakes!

Covering more than 2,400 square miles, the Poconos offers an array of outdoor activities, including hiking, fishing, canoeing, whitewater rafting, and skiing in the winter season.

One of the main attractions in the Poconos is Bushkill Falls, often called the “Niagara of Pennsylvania”. This series of eight waterfalls, nestled deep in the woods, is a popular place to hike to.

If you’re a history enthusiast, take a step back in time and explore historic towns like Jim Thorpe, which offers old-world charm with its historic sites and architecture. Taking a scenic ride on the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway is another fun thing to do and you’ll be able to travel through the scenery on a vintage coach.

Acadia National Park, Maine

Acadia National Park is on Maine’s Mount Desert Island and is where you’ll find a stunning mix of sea and mountains. As the only national park in New England, it’s well worth a visit.

The park spans over 49,000 acres with a diverse range of landscapes, from rocky coastlines to granite peaks, and from dense woodlands to serene ponds.

Its highest point, Cadillac Mountain, is the first place to see the sunrise in the United States from October to early March, making it a popular spot for early morning hikes.

Acadia is also home to lots of wildlife, including white-tailed deer, moose, foxes, and over 330 species of birds, making it a fantastic spot for wildlife lovers.

One of my recommendations is to drive the 27-mile-long Park Loop Road. Along the way, you’ll pass iconic locations like Sand Beach, Thunder Hole, and Otter Cliffs.

Newport, Rhode Island

Newport in Rhode Island is another of the top places to visit on the east coast and a must visit on your New England road trip.

This coastal town is famous for its grand Gilded Age mansions and it’s not too hard to imagine journeying back in time as you tour these opulent houses, once the summer homes of America’s wealthiest families.

Among the many mansions, three stand out – The Breakers, Marble House, and Rosecliff. Each one offers a unique look into the lavish lifestyle of a bygone era.

If you have enough time, take a day trip to Block Island, just off the coast of Newport which is well worth a visit.

Washington, D.C.

As the nation’s capital, Washington D.C. is full of history and culture.

This big city on the east coast mixes modernity and antiquity and is easily one of the best places to visit on the East Coast.

During the day, stroll through beautiful parks, marvel at monumental landmarks, and dive into knowledge at the city’s world-renowned museums. As the sun sets, experience D.C.’s lively nightlife, buzzing with an energy that’s uniquely its own.

Key sights include iconic structures like the White House, the U.S. Capitol, the Washington Monument, and the Lincoln Memorial, each with its own interesting history.

Make sure to visit the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, Air and Space Museum, and the National Gallery of Art for a cultural feast.

Great Smoky Mountains

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park covers a whopping 500,000+ acres and is one of the most visited national parks in the U.S.

The misty mountain peaks, lush forests, and cascading waterfalls make it one of the best places to visit on the East Coast, and indeed, the whole of the USA.

Regardless of the season, the park is worth a visit. Be it the vibrant green meadows in summer, the colors during fall, the snowy landscapes in winter, or the colorful flowers in bloom during the spring, the park’s beauty is year-round.

Don’t miss the stunning views from the top of Clingmans Dome, the misty Rainbow Falls, and a challenging climb up Mount Le Conte.

On the outskirts of this magnificent park lies Gatlinburg, an ideal base for exploring the Smokies, and nearby Pigeon Forge offers so many restaurants and entertainment venues, making it another great place to stay.

Nashville, Tennessee

Music lovers make a bee-line for the city of Nashville in Tennessee, fondly known as the Music Capital of the World.

This city is all about rhythm and melodies with a fun country music scene that will have you tapping your feet.

Visit the Grand Ole Opry for an unforgettable concert experience, and immerse yourself in the history of country music at the Country Music Hall of Fame.

But that’s not all Nashville has to offer. The city’s buzzing restaurant scene and trendy bars will keep the foodies and night owls entertained. And don’t miss out on seeing the Parthenon, a full-scale replica of the Greek architectural wonder, reflecting the city’s nickname as the ‘Athens of the South.’ It’s a pretty unexpected thing to see on the east coast!

Blue Ridge Parkway, Virginia and North Carolina

The Blue Ridge Parkway stretches across Virginia and North Carolina, is one of the most beautiful drives you can take on the East Coast.

It bends along the full Blue Ridge mountain range, which spans 550 miles from Pennsylvania to Georgia, and is one of the best places to go on the east coast.

While driving along the Parkway, you’ll have access to over 200 scenic overlooks where you can enjoy mountain and forest views. You’ll soon see where the park’s name comes from with the distinctive blue haze on the mountains.

In addition to the scenic drive, you can go hiking or camping, and don’t forget the cultural and historical points of interest along the way, like the Mabry Mill, a restored gristmill, sawmill, and blacksmith shop, or the Museum of North Carolina Minerals.

The Outer Banks, North Carolina

North Carolina was my favorite state on our American east coast road trip. It was just so scenic! You’ve simply got to make it one of the places to visit in east coast USA.

If you’re after picturesque landscapes and a blend of history and nature, the Outer Banks in North Carolina should be on top of your travel list. Just off the coast, this 130-mile strip of barrier islands is a beautiful patchwork of charming towns and tranquil fishing villages making it the perfect east coast vacation spot.

One of the most iconic features of the Outer Banks is its numerous lighthouses. These towering structures, which you can climb in the summer months for a small fee, offer a panoramic view of the islands.

The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, one of the tallest brick lighthouses in North America, is particularly worth visiting. Some of these lighthouses will be closed during the off-season but you’ll still be able to view them from the outside.

Camping on the Outer Banks is a must for your east coast vacation. If you end up camping by the beach under the star-studded sky, with the sound of waves providing a soothing backdrop, you’ll have an unforgettable experience.

To get from island to island you’ll likely need to take a few ferries. These run throughout the year but remember to book in advance during the peak season to avoid long waits.

Ocracoke, North Carolina

Ocracoke is one of the islands on the Outer Banks of North Carolina that is worth a separate mention on this list.

This quaint island town has a small lighthouse, clean beaches, and a super picturesque harbor. While you’re there, check out the Ocracoke Lighthouse, one of the oldest still in operation in the U.S. Although it’s not one you can climb, its historical significance and beauty make it a must-see.

The island is also known for its stunning beaches which are often less crowded than others in the Outer Banks, making it a perfect spot to relax and enjoy the surf. If you’re lucky, you might even spot dolphins playing in the waves!

Ocracoke’s harbor area is a delight with a host of bars and restaurants serving up fresh seafood and local specialties. If you happen to visit on St. Patrick’s Day, you’ll find the town alive with celebrations.

It’s the sunsets in Ocracoke that I most remember. Be sure to head down to the harbor and soak one up!

Chesapeake Bay Tunnel-Bridge, Virginia

While it’s a more unique place to visit on the east coast, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel in Virginia is an incredible feat of engineering that’s worth experiencing.

This unique structure is a blend of bridges and tunnels spanning about 18 miles and was built to accommodate both ship and car traffic without the need for a drawbridge.

As you travel along the bridge-tunnel, you’ll be surrounded by the beautiful bay waters and views and it’s pretty cool to see.

If you’re heading from north to south, there’s a viewing area at the southern end where you can stop and marvel at this architectural masterpiece.

Not only does it offer a great vantage point of the structure, but it’s also a good spot for a picnic or even a bit of fishing. This unique roadway isn’t just a way to get from A to B, it’s an adventure in itself.

Jockey’s Ridge State  Park, North Carolina

Jockey’s Ridge State Park is a wonderful gem on the East Coast, right near Kitty Hawk where you’ll find the Wright Brothers Memorial which you should add to your trip.

It’s an ideal place to spend a full day exploring, and it doesn’t even cost a penny to enter!

You’ll find perfect spots for a picnic, so pack a meal to enjoy in the great outdoors at one of the most beautiful places on the east coast.

Stay all day until it closes at 8 pm, especially to witness a breathtaking sunset that will turn your visit into an unforgettable experience.

Assateague Island

Assateague Island is a 37-mile-long barrier island with diverse landscapes – from lush maritime forests and tranquil salt marshes to golden sandy beaches.

The main reason people love this area though is for the chance to see wild horses roaming along the shoreline. You’ll see them grazing on the waterfront in their natural habitat – a truly unforgettable sight.

You can wade into the Atlantic from the beach, or venture on the ‘Life of the Forest’ trail in Assateague State Park. For a truly unique experience, consider beach camping under the starry sky.

Asheville, North Carolina

For music lovers and artists, there’s no better place than Asheville (apart from maybe Nashville, depending on your music taste).

This city, the largest in North Carolina, exudes a unique, creative vibe and you’ll find eccentric shops and street art on every corner of its happening downtown area.

Asheville is also a hub for live music, with festivals showcasing a blend of classical, contemporary, and traditional sounds. Whether you’re into African-Caribbean music, Mozart’s works, or Southern Appalachian tunes, you’ll find a festival to your liking.

But Asheville isn’t just about music and arts. Visit the luxurious Biltmore Estate, a sprawling 8,000-acre property, where you can enjoy wine tasting, hiking, biking, and fine dining. It’s an Asheville experience that makes you feel like royalty!

South of the Border, South Carolina

This is something that could (and would) only really happen in America. The funny stores and amusements that have sprung up between these two states on the east coast USA are well worth stopping at.

The story goes that South of the Border (so named as it’s just south of the North Carolina/South Carolina border) started as a small gas station but, when the Interstate was built the owner took advantage of the increase in footfall and South of the Border grew into what it is today.

If you visit you’ll find hat shops (with some truly ridiculous hats that we very much enjoyed trying on), souvenirs, a giant statue of Pedro (the area’s mascot), a reptile center, restaurants, and more fireworks than you can imagine.

Sure, you could argue that it’s overrated as it’s basically a glorified service station. But personally, I think it’s well worth a visit as you travel down the Atlantic coast of America.

Charleston, South Carolina

Charleston is a great place to visit that’s full of history, stunning architecture, and pristine beaches.

Here, you can marvel at antebellum mansions, wander along cobblestone streets, and explore cozy boutiques and eateries. Charleston’s history dates back to 1670, and you can dive into its past by visiting its numerous museums and landmarks.

If you’re a beach lover, Charleston will not disappoint. Popular spots like Folly Beach, Sullivan’s Island, and Isle of Palms offer ample opportunities for swimming, surfing, and sunbathing.

Foodies will also enjoy Charleston’s vibrant culinary scene, with an array of restaurants serving seafood, Southern comfort food, and locally-brewed beer such as Palmetto Brewing Co. and Holy City Brewing.

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

For a beach vacation on the East Coast, look no further than Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

This sun-soaked destination, with its 60 miles of sandy beaches, is a paradise for beach-goers. Besides beach activities, the city is also known for its water parks with attractions like the Myrtle Beach SkyWheel, and the Ripley’s Aquarium.

Myrtle Beach is also home to more than 100 golf courses! So it’s the perfect place to go if golf is your thing.

Seafood lovers will be spoiled for choice with numerous restaurants and beach shacks offering delectable treats.

Cumberland Island, Georgia

Cumberland Island is one of Georgia’s hidden treasures with untouched beaches, marshlands, and forests. It’s one of the best hidden vacation spots on the east coast.

It’s only accessible by ferry or private boat which just makes it extra special. Here, you can explore the ruins of a Carnegie-built mansion, enjoy the 9,800-acre wilderness, or stay at the only hotel, Greyfield Inn.

If you’re lucky you might get to see some wild horses roaming freely too!

Savannah, Georgia

Savannah is the oldest city in Georgia and brimming with stunning coastal scenery and well-preserved architecture making it a great destination for trips on the east coast.

The Historic District, with its cobblestone streets and park squares, is a must-visit and you’ll also find numerous historic monuments, museums, and restored 18th-century homes.

When it comes to the best things to do in Savannah Georgia , don’t miss out on learning more about the history of the plantations, enjoy food at the popular Mrs Wilkdes’ Dining Room, and take a carriage ride through town.

Helen, Georgia

In the mountains of northeastern Georgia, the town of Helen is like a fairytale that has come to life.

When it comes to east coast trips, this one will have you feeling like you’re miles away from America.

This charming Bavarian-style town which reminds me a little bit of Leavenworth on the West Coast offers a range of outdoor activities since it’s surrounded by the Southern Appalachian Mountains and Blue Ridge Mountains.

Atlanta, Georgia

Atlanta is also known as the ‘City of Trees, and the city has everything from great food and fun festivals to plenty of historical sites making it a great choice if you’re looking for east coast vacation spots for young adults.

Tour the Atlanta History Center for a comprehensive look at the Civil War, or stroll the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Park to relive the Civil Rights Movement.

Or, enjoy ice cream festivals in summer and pizza festivals in fall, there’s always something exciting happening in Atlanta!

Jekyll Island, Georgia

We decided to take a trip to Jekyll Island which, although popular with US visitors, is pretty unknown to others.

Jekyll Island is, amongst other things, home to a turtle reserve which is well worth a visit. The Jekyll Island Sea Turtle Centre is packed full of information about the turtles; their lives and the dangers they face.

We even saw them operating on a couple of turtles who had had their shells damaged when hit by boats. Fortunately, our visit to Jekyll Island’s turtle center coincided with the turtles’ dinner time too.

The center uses a technique where staff throw food into the turtles’ tanks when the turtles are looking the opposite way. This way, they say, the turtles are less likely to associate humans with food (as they don’t seem the humans throw it) and maintain their ability to hunt.

Also on Jekyll Island is Driftwood Beach. This beach has often been voted as one of America’s most romantic beaches and it’s definitely one of the best beaches on the east coast USA and a cool idea for east coast vacation spots for couples.

The driftwood looks almost alien and the beach is spectacular at sunrise. I’d highly recommend adding Jekyll ISland to your USA east coast tour plans.

Orlando, Florida

The city of Orlando in Florida is synonymous with fun, adventure, and, of course, theme parks which are some of the best east coast attractions.

A great place to visit on the east coast for families with children, Orlando is a city that breathes magic into the young and old alike.

Iconic theme parks such as Walt Disney World, Universal Studios, and SeaWorld guarantee endless excitement with their unique attractions, thrilling rides, and immersive experiences.

If you’re looking for the best vacation spots on the east coast you can’t go too wrong with Orlando.

Another attraction not too far from Orlando is the Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral, a must-visit spot for science and space enthusiasts.

You can walk through the Rocket Garden, take a bus tour of the center, and even witness a live rocket launch if you time your visit right. We were lucky enough to see the first relaunch of a Space X Rocket which was super cool! It’s definitely one of the top attractions on the East Coast.

Miami Beach, Florida

A trip to the East Coast would be incomplete without a visit to Miami Beach; one of the best vacations on the east coast

The miles-long stretch of beautiful beachfront is lined with Art Deco buildings, upscale beach clubs, and fine-dining restaurants with something for everyone. It’s South Beach which is arguably the best part of Miami Beach.

South Beach is home to Ocean Drive, a hotspot for nightlife and the heart of Miami’s Art Deco district.

Apart from sunbathing on the pristine beach, you can enjoy a leisurely walk, admiring the beautiful villas and mansions dotting the area.

Beyond the beach, Miami is a melting pot of cultures. More than 70% of Miami’s population speaks Spanish, so brushing up on your Spanish phrases might come in handy. You can also visit Cuba where you’ll find delicious food and feel immersed in another culture.

Fort Lauderdale, Florida

Fort Lauderdale in Florida offers a perfect balance between the vibrancy of Miami and the tranquillity of a seaside town.

While some consider it an offshoot of Miami, Fort Lauderdale stands on its own with a distinct identity and a relaxed atmosphere. The city’s beaches are less crowded but just as beautiful and offer a peaceful setting for relaxing and sunbathing.

The more relaxed vibes when compared to Miami make it a great as options for east coast vacation spots for families.

Alexander Springs, Florida

We stumbled across this by accident. I was tired of sleeping in Walmart Carparks and used iOverlander to find some wild camping.

We ended up staying in the Ocala National Forest and spent the following morning at Alexander Springs.

This was the clearest water I’ve seen in a long time. There were turtles (and probably some alligators) and plenty of scuba divers who dove down to where (I think) the spring began.

Pack lunch, sun cream, and your swimming stuff, and get there early to secure a good spot at one of the best places to visit on the east coast of the USA.

Ichetucknee Springs, Florida

I’d read about Ichetucknee Springs and was determined to visit while in Florida. Sometimes you can see manatees while you float down the river. We didn’t, but it’s still worth a visit on your American east coast road trip.

The thing to do here is rent a tube (rubber ring) and float down the river. We rented from Ichetucknee Tube Centre ; the original place although there are now a few others renting tubes. The cheapest tubes they had were just $5 for the whole day but fancier options are available.

From there, the owner (a woman who appears to have lived there her whole life and will willingly share the history of the place with you), will help you tie your tube to the car and give you directions on how to get to the starting point.

The river is shaded so you’re not in direct sunlight (something we were very glad about given it was 34 degrees when we did this!). You’ll spot turtles, fish, plenty of birds, and manatees if you’re lucky!

All this for just $11 a day – less if you’re splitting the park entrance fee ($6) with someone else! It’s got to be one of the best stops if you’re touring east coast USA and looking for places to visit in Florida!

Everglades National Park, Florida

Just a short drive from Miami the Everglades National Park offers a unique ecosystem teeming with wildlife.

Spanning across 1.5 million acres, the park is so much fun to explore — just don’t go in the water!

As you explore the park you’ll find wetlands and mangrove forests, freshwater marshes, and coastal prairies.

We did a self-guide trip in the Everglades (linked above) and saw so many alligators, birds, and more chilling in the water. I personally think it’s way better than the tourist attractions like ‘reserves’ and boats. I’d also highly recommend these kayaking tours of the Everglades.

Key West and the Florida Keys

Key West at the bottom of the Florida Keys Scenic Drive is a beautiful place where you can enjoy fresh seafood, admire art, and soak up the island life.

One of the key highlights of Key West is the daily sunset celebration at Mallory Square. People from all over the island gather here to witness the stunning display of colors as the sun sets over the Gulf of Mexico.

The Key West Gallery and the Gallery on Greene showcase works by local and international artists and are worth visiting. And be sure to grab a slice (or two) of Key Lime Pie during your visit too!

This is anything but one of the best-kept secret vacation spots east coast USA offers, but it’s popular for a reason.

Dry Tortugas National Park, Florida

Situated about 70 miles west of Key West, Dry Tortugas National Park is a cluster of seven islands and protected coral reefs. It’s a destination of choice for snorkelers, divers, and boating enthusiasts, with its clear blue waters and abundant marine life, and is high on many people’s Florida and east coast bucket lists.

The park is home to Fort Jefferson, one of the largest 19th-century forts in the United States. It was designed to control navigation in the Gulf of Mexico and protect the southern coastline of the United States and it’s fascinating to learn more about it.

Biscayne National Park, Florida

Biscayne National Park is an aquatic wonderland located south of Miami that covers over 170,000 acres. The park consists primarily of water and is full of marine life living in the mangrove forest and the reefs.

Kayaking, paddleboarding, and sailing are popular activities in the park. However, the real attraction is beneath the surface. As the largest city in New England and the birthplace of the American Revolution, Boston is undoubtedly one of the absolute best places to visit on the East Coast.

With its coastal location, gorgeous architecture, a dizzying array of distinct neighborhoods, and world-class museums (not to mention universities), you’ll never run out of incredible things to do in Boston .

We’ve been obsessed with Boston since we spent a summer living there, and will forever count it among our favorite East Coast weekend destinations.

During your trip, be sure to walk the Freedom Trail, relax at the Boston Public Garden and the Common, and enjoy the views from the water on a whale-watching cruise .

When it comes to neighborhoods, make sure to visit the picturesque North End, fashionable Back Bay, and grand Beacon Hill–three Boston neighborhoods you absolutely can’t miss.

Where to Stay in Boston

• Found Hotel Boston Common: This boutique hotel in the Theatre District is perfect for exploring Boston. Rooms are bright and comfortable, and there is access to public transport a short walk from the hotel.
• Revere Hotel Boston Common: Also in the Theatre District and close to Boston Common is this stylish hotel with a stunning rooftop terrace and bar, perfect for afternoon drinks. Rooms are spacious and have a coffee machine for those of you who need coffee the moment you wake up.

No, not Portland, Oregon –the lighthouse-and-lobster loving Portland, Maine!

Known for its charming Portland Head Light, its warehouse-district-turned-trendy-neighborhood of Old Port, and many, many breweries, Portland is an absolute blast to visit.

While you’re there, be sure to take a quick ferry over to nearby Peaks Island for a day, tour the beautiful Victoria Mansion, and enjoy (at least) one afternoon on a sailboat.

Of course, no trip to Portland is complete without snapping photos at the Portland Head Light, but Bug Light deserves a quick look, too!

Portland is also less than an hour by car from famous Kennebunkport–so if you want to mix a famous small town into this weekend getaway on the East Coast, you absolutely can.

New York City

How much of New York can you see on just a quick weekend trip?

Enough that you’ll want to come back immediately!

New York certainly can’t be “done” in a weekend–nor can it be done in a lifetime–but the great thing about New York City is that no matter who you are or what your interests are, you can find something to captivate you.

Whether you want to seek out the iconic sights of Midtown , find hidden gems in the outer boroughs, pay a visit to the Statue of Liberty, museum-hop your way through iconic attractions, or simply eat your way through the city, you’ll be able to find all you’re looking for (and more) in New York.

For tourists hoping for the classic NYC experience like we were on our first few visits,  a weekend in New York  is certainly long enough to see many of the highlights that we’ve all seen over and over in movies and shows throughout our lives!

Central Park, Fifth Avenue, Grand Central, Times Square, the New York Public Library, a Broadway show or two, a visit to Top of the Rock or the Empire State Building , the Brooklyn Bridge–on a weekend, you can see all of that and more.

If you’re into museums, we also recommend hitting just 1-2 (no more–there’s too much else to do!) during your weekend in New York: the Met, MOMA, and the Natural History Museum are all great, classic choices.

Where to Stay in New York

• The Plaza Hotel : For a memorable place to stay, this is one of the most classic and luxurious hotels in New York. It is located right by Central Park, the Rockefeller Center, and some of NYC’s most popular museums.
• The Renwick: Offering stylish residential-style accommodation, this beautiful hotel is equipped with plenty of amenities and high-class comfort. It is also a short walk to the Empire State Building and Bryant Park for exploring.

Philadelphia

Philadelphia has been one of the best East Coast cities to visit for centuries, and–like Boston–it features strong ties to the American Revolution.

This is where the Declaration of Independence and the Consitution were signed, touring Independence Hall and visiting the nearby Liberty Bell are among the best things to do in Philadelphia today as a result!

You can’t miss Philly’s food scene when visiting, either–from whoopie pies to Philly cheesesteaks, the city has a (literal) flavor all its own.

We loved taking this fun food tour when visiting Philadelphia, and of course, eating our way through Reading Terminal Market.

Be sure to also make time to visit some of Philadelphia’s incredible museums during your visit, including the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Museum of the American Revolution (we loved this one), and touring the dark but fascinating Eastern State Penitentiary.

The Philadelphia Museum of Art is also home to another essential stop in this iconic East Coast City: the Rocky Steps (and if you’re willing to work up a sweat, definitely consider running up them yourself.

Where to Stay in Philadelphia

• Morris House Hotel : Located right by Washington Square and a short walk from Independence Hall, Morris House Hotel is both a National Historic Landmark dating to the 18th century and a popular boutique hotel!
• Home2Suites By Hilton : The Home2Suites concept of combining the appeal of a hotel and an Airbnb into one property was excellent (our spacious room had a kitchenette), and the customer service is great.

Washington DC

Our country’s capital city is not only the seat of our national government, but it’s also a fabulous place for a weekend trip on the East Coast!

Museum-goers will be delighted with the enormous array of impressive options to choose from in Washington DC.

Everything from the many Smithsonian Museums, to quirky options like the International Spy Museum, to meaningful stops like the US Holocaust Memorial Museum and the National Museum of African American History and Culture, is available.

There are far more than you can visit in a single weekend, and as a bonus, most DC museums are free to visit!

Those interested in US History and government will also have plenty to keep them busy along the National Mall, including iconic stops like the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial.

Touring the US Capitol is always an interesting experience, and if you plan ahead, you may even be able to tour the White House!

While Washington DC has plenty to offer year-round, there’s no doubt that visiting during cherry blossom season is an incredible (but crowded) experience.

Where to Stay in Washington DC

• CitizenM Capitol : Another stunning example of CitizenM hotels is this location in Washington DC Capitol. Expect all the style and comfort these hotels are known for.
• Riggs Washington DC : Located in the former home of Riggs National Bank this iconic building is now home to a classic and beautiful hotel. Rooms are huge and comfortable and offer views of Penn Quarter.

Compared to some of the other destinations in this travel guide, Baltimore is definitely a bit under the radar as far as cities to visit on the East Coast go (unless you’re headed to a Ravens or an Orioles game, of course).

If you’re looking for a coastal American city with plenty of history, art, and food to offer, though, Baltimore has you covered!

The Baltimore Museum of Art, George Peabody Library, Walters Art Museum, American Visionary Museum, and more, will keep any museum-hopper happy.

For American history buffs, Fort McHenry is a must, and for literary lovers, Edgar Allan Poe’s House is tiny but interesting.

When it comes to wandering, the neighborhoods of Inner Harbor, Harbor East, Fells Point, and Little Italy have plenty to explore.

And, of course, no weekend in Baltimore is complete without chowing down on crab cakes!

Where to Stay in Baltimore

• The Inn at Henderson’s Wharf : Housed in a warehouse-turned-charming-hotel, you can find the popular Inn at Henderson’s Wharf at the end of a delightful cobblestone street in Fells Point.
• Kimpton Hotel Monaco Baltimore : Housed in the former B&O Railroad Headquarters, walking into the opulent lobby of the Kimpton Hotel Monaco Baltimore feels like stepping back in time–and the rooms are incredibly comfortable, too

Alexandria may be located just south of Washington DC, but it can definitely hold its own as a standalone weekend getaway on the East Coast!

Set along the Potomac River, Alexandria is stately and beautiful, with plenty of gorgeous architecture, great food, interesting history, and fun shopping to offer.

Don’t miss the iconic King Street Mile (and if you’re interested in some of the less savory historic stories, consider coming back at night for a ghost tour).

The George Washington Masonic National Memorial is a must-see, and you can climb to the top for an excellent view of the city.

As far as museums go, the Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum is a fun stop!

Gadsby’s Tavern –part fine dining restaurant, and part museum–gives modern visitors the chance to dine in the same space where many of the Founding Fathers once plotted against British rule.

Alexandria’s most popular attraction, though, lies just 15 minutes south and technically outside of town: Mount Vernon, the former plantation of George Washington.

Where to Stay in Alexandria, Virginia

• Hilton Alexandria Old Town is a really fantastic option, rooms are huge and really fresh and bright. The onsite restaurant is really great if you don’t want to venture out early for breakfast. It is also right next to the Amtrak and Metro station, perfect for easy access to explore!
• StayAPT Suites Fort Belvoir , while a little further off the main spots it is still close enough to access. These are a great budget friendly option if you also prefer self-catering with hotel facilities.

Without a doubt, the small but stunning city of Savannah, Georgia is one of the absolute best East Coast cities for a USA weekend getaway.

It also happens to be one of our favorite cities in the world, and we’ll never stop revisiting it!

Featuring absolutely stunning architecture, 22 of its original 24 town squares, endless oak trees dripping with Spanish moss, and some of the best food in the country, exploring the best things to do in Savannah is always a blast.

While you’re there, be sure to meander down beautiful Jones Street, check out Forsyth Park, hear some of the city’s most enduring legends on a ghost tour , enjoy views from River Street, and take in some of Savannah’s complex history at its various house museums and houses of worship.

Don’t forget to set aside plenty of time to eat!

While there are dozens of incredible  restaurants in Savannah , favorites include The Olde Pink House and The Grey for special occasions, The Collins Quarter for their legendary lavender mocha latte, and Leopold’s Ice Cream for a scoop of their famous Tutti Frutti ice cream.

Have enough time for a quick day trip ?

Tybee Island –also known as “Savannah’s Beach”–is less than a 30-minute drive away, allowing you to easily combine a beach trip and city break!

Where to Stay in Savannah

• The Marshall House : Featuring a popular included breakfast, a fantastic location in the heart of Savannah’s historic district, and phenomenal reviews, you can’t go wrong with a stay at The Marshall House!
• Foley House Inn : Easily my favorite hotel that I’ve stayed in while in Savannah, the Foley House Inn is absolutely beautiful inside and out, and has a perfect location right on Chippewa Square.

Beautiful beaches, a unique culture that’s all its own, fabulous architecture, and–of course–plenty of sunshine: you’ll find all of this and far more by heading all the way south to Miami for your East Coast weekend getaway!

When it comes to beaches, South Beach is often considered one of the best urban beaches on the planet, and we’d have to agree.

Don’t limit yourself just to the beach, though!

Be sure to explore Miami Beach’s impressive Art Deco architecture, eat your way through Little Havana, admire street art in Wynwood, and check out the views from Biscayne Bay.

For a unique perspective on the city, consider taking a boat cruise –we were very impressed with how much we enjoyed ours!

For those who want to experience some unique nature in south Florida during their trip, consider also planning on a day trip to nearby Everglades National Park.

Or, if you have a few more days (say, an extra long weekend trip), you can road trip all the way to Key West, the southernmost point of the USA!

Where to Stay in Miami

• Hotel Impala : We love staying here! The room was clean, the shower divine, the customer service lovely, and–most importantly–the location on Collins Ave. was absolutely  perfect.  Located in the heart of the Art Deco district and a five-minute walk from South Beach while still offering a quiet place to sleep at night, Hotel Impala had a location you just can’t beat in Miami Beach.
• The Marlin Hotel : This hotel offers the chance to stay in one of Miami Beach’s historic art deco buildings! Boasting a fantastic location on Collins Avenue, impeccable customer service, incredible reviews, and spacious suites, the Marlin Hotel is the perfect hotel for those looking for a luxury experience while also seeing a side of Miami Beach’s Art Deco history that not every visitor to the city gets to.

Colorful, coastal, and downright charming, Charleston makes an absolutely delightful East Coast weekend getaway.

Don’t mistake Charleston for all glamour, though: the city has a national reputation for its incredible food scene, played an important role in two of the USA’s most important wars, and is home to an enormous amount of often heavy history.

While you’re there, be sure to snap photos at beautiful Rainbow Row and The Battery, check out City Market, enjoy Waterfront Park, and tour the Olde Exchange and Dungeon (which is one of the places where the US Constitution was ratified).

The Old Slave Mart Museum is home to heartbreaking history and is an essential stop when working to understand the history of Charleston.

Those interested in US military history will no doubt want to visit Patriots Point to tour the former US naval ships docked there, and pay a visit to Fort Sumter to learn about its history (and enjoy the views).

Beach lovers, don’t miss the chance to check out nearby Folly Beach!

Where to Stay in Charleston

• The Jasmine House : This stunning boutique inn is housed in a Greek Revivalist home dating to 1843, and decorated to the nines! This is exactly the kind of property visitors dream about planning a trip to The Holy City, and the impeccable reviews and fantastic location make The Jasmine House the perfect place to stay when in Charleston.
• Harbourview Inn : For charming luxury in the heart of historic Charleston, check into the gorgeous Harbourview Inn, located just steps away from Rainbow Row and Waterfront Park. The inn features excellent views from its rooftop, a phenomenal included breakfast, and excellent reviews.

Of all of the weekend getaways on the East Coast covered here, Asheville is one of the best options for a group divided on whether to visit a city or the great outdoors.

Home to an epic craft beer scene, the incredible Biltmore Estate , plenty of street art, and delicious food options, there’s no doubt that Asheville appeals to the city lovers among us.

Its location right next door to the Pisgah National Forest and Great Smoky Mountain National Park, however, make it a fabulous US weekend destination for outdoor enthusiasts, as well.

There are plenty of easy hikes near Asheville (many of them featuring waterfalls) that allow travelers of all skill levels to enjoy the beautiful mountain setting!

No matter what your interests are, try to make time during your trip to Asheville to drive a small piece of the Blue Ridge Parkway–especially if you’re visiting in the fall and can enjoy the changing colors.

Often considered one of the most beautiful road trips in the United States , Blue Ridge Parkway is a drive not to be missed.

Where to Stay in Asheville

• Cedar Crest Inn: This pink 1891 mansion house is a perfect place to base yourself in Asheville. Packed with historical details and stunning architecture you can imagine it as a mini Biltmore.
• The Applewood Manor : Located within walking distance of downtown via a greenbelt trail, The Applewood Manor feels like it’s in a peaceful, quiet location–but it’s still in a perfect location to make the most of Asheville.

Sprawling, historic, interesting, and full of delicious southern food, Atlanta makes a fantastic weekend getaway on the East Coast USA.

The city’s museums are worthy of a large swath of your time, with many of them centered around Centennial Olympic Park (where the 1996 Olympics were held).

In the immediate area, you can find the National Center for Civil and Human Rights (an absolute must-see when visiting Atlanta), the Georgia Aquarium, and the famous World of Coca-Cola.

Of course, no visit to Atlanta would be complete without time spent at the Martin Luther King Historical Park, which is home to several sites important to the life of Dr. King and the Civil Rights movement overall.

Other interesting places to visit during a weekend in Atlanta include the BeltLine, Ponce City Market (for excellent food), and the Atlanta History Center.

Curious about filming locations?

Atlanta–and Georgia overall–are hotspots for filming movies and TV shows ranging from The Walking Dead to Stranger Things.

There are plenty of filming location tours available that are ready to help you find both iconic and hidden locations!

Where to Stay in Atlanta

• Hotel Indigo – This small chain is perfect for those on a mid-range budget. The location is unmatched and they’re even pet-friendly!
• Epicurean Atlanta, Autograph Collection : Luxury travelers consider staying at the Epicurean Atlanta, Autograph Collection, which is such a beautiful, unique property that it’s worth it to see the terrace.

Without a doubt, Orlando is not only one of the most popular East Coast cities to visit but one of the most popular weekend getaways in the entire USA, and that’s for one important reason: theme parks!

From Walt Disney World to Universal, Orlando’s world-class theme parks are an enormous draw for kids and adults alike, and they alone are a reason to visit Central Florida!

Whether you want to ride the classic Disney rides at Magic Kingdom, step into Hogwarts in Harry Potter World, or ride soaring roller coasters, you’ll have a blast.

Away from its iconic theme parks, though, there is still plenty to do in Central Florida!

Canoeing at Wekiwa Springs was a favorite activity of mine as a kid and is a great way to experience a beautiful Florida spring without going far.

The Kennedy Space Center is about an hour away from downtown Orlando, and an incredible experience.

28 Best Beaches on the East Coast — From Maine to Florida

These East Coast beaches have blue waters, soft sand, and fun activities for everyone.

The East Coast of the U.S. is home to some seriously stunning landscapes, from rugged mountains to pastoral valleys. But no area showcases nature's artistry more than the region's gorgeous coastline.

The states bordering the eastern shore encompass nearly 30,000 miles of coastline,  according to the NOAA Office for Coastal Management . But with so many states to choose from, it may be hard to decide which beaches to visit, especially when you weigh all your options, from the rocky coves of Maine and the iconic boardwalks of the Jersey Shore to secluded Southern barrier islands.

Before we dig into our picks, though, let us start by saying there are plenty more beaches worthy of their day in the sun and your vacation time. So, by no means is this list ranked, exhaustive, or a slight to other local favorites. To keep things simple, we've compiled a list of two beaches per state. Here are 28 of the best beaches on the East Coast.

Sand Beach, Maine

Acadia National Park  is one of the most stunning places to explore in the spring, summer, and fall. After hiking through its seemingly endless trails, make your way to Sand Beach, a small stretch of shoreline accessible via Park Loop Road. The water will be cold, but the refreshing feeling is worth it, thanks to the solitude and stellar views. 

Gooch's Beach, Maine

Those looking for more action can head to Gooch's Beach in Kennebunk. The soft-sand stretch is popular with surfers, thanks to a  clean break  that's usually best in the fall, though the waves have been known to pick up in the summer if a good storm is on the way. While there's no snack bar here, there are lifeguards, so families can feel more at ease.

Hampton Beach, New Hampshire

For miles of sandy shore, head to  Hampton Beach State Park . Visitors here can camp, fish, picnic, and, of course, swim in the Atlantic waters. And because it's a state park, it comes with all the necessary facilities, including bathrooms, for a comfortable experience.

Technically not a coastal beach, this beach is located on Lake Winnipesaukee, but it's just as glorious as a seaside escape along the Atlantic. Come for plenty of sand and calm waters that are perfect for small children. The beach also has a lively boardwalk and other happenings, including lake cruises, tons of dining options, and live music every once in a while.

Race Point Beach, Massachusetts

Race Point Beach, located in Provincetown, comes with miles of silky sand. It's a prime place to get a summertime glow or sit with a cozy sweater to watch a fall sunrise or sunset. It even has a lighthouse up on the dunes (though you will have to hike about two miles to get there, according to the local Chamber of Commerce ). 

Coast Guard Beach, Massachusetts

For a gentler shoreline, head to Coast Guard Beach in Eastham, a popular spot for families — locals and visitors alike. Though it's just 25 miles from Race Point Beach, the waters here tend to be much calmer, plus it features facilities, including a bathroom and rinse-off showers, as well as lifeguards all summer long. 

Easton's Beach, Rhode Island

Easton's Beach  in Newport is as idyllic as they come. The charming beach is also Newport's largest, making it easy to find a spot to lay down your blanket. In addition to amenities like a snack bar and bathrooms, it also has the bonus of a carousel and the Save the Bay Aquarium. 

East Matunuck State Beach, Rhode Island

As the Ocean State, Rhode Island has its fair share of spectacular beaches, but none has as much charm as East Matunuck. Nestled at the far end of the state, East Matunuck State Beach is equipped with typical perks such as a snack bar, bathrooms, and summertime lifeguards keeping a watchful eye, as well as gorgeous dunes and a view of Block Island. Plus, it's down the street from the famed  Matunuck Oyster Bar , which is deserving of the short walk for a dozen oysters and a cocktail for lunch. 

Compo Beach, Connecticut

Westport has several beaches ideal for exploration, but  Compo is the standout. The 29-acre park includes a large sandy beach that looks out onto the Long Island Sound with a wheelchair-friendly boardwalk and a concession stand. For those looking to break a sweat and have a little fun, there are also two sand volleyball courts.

Harvey's Beach, Connecticut

Harvey's Beach in Old Saybrook is the stuff of small-town dreams. The sandy beach, lined with gorgeous dunes, is a place where visitors can swim, fish, boat, and hunt for shells. There's a concession stand, changing rooms, and a small playground for kids too. 

Rockaway Beach, New York

For New Yorkers, Rockaway Beach in Queens is as convenient as it gets. It's accessible via public transit from Manhattan and is a stellar spot to escape the hustle and bustle for a quick swim or a paddle out to surf. (It's technically the only beach in New York City  where it's legal to surf .) 

Cooper's Beach, New York

Discover Long Island

There's no bad beach in the Hamptons , but for a more local vibe, make your way to Cooper's Beach. It's a gorgeous little pocket of sand along the Atlantic that's near restaurants. Even better, it's known for being just a little quieter in the summer than more popular nearby locales. 

The Cove, New Jersey

The beaches along Cape May go on for some 2.5 miles, and the best part about them is that they're within walking distance of many local accommodations and all the top attractions (a.k.a. those famous Victorian homes). But Cape May isn't just one beach; it's made up of many. One of the best is The Cove, ideal for everyone from families to solo surfers, kayakers, and those seeking a break from the more active beach scene down the shore.

Sandy Hook, New Jersey 

Further north, beachgoers should make their way to Sandy Hook. The expansive stretch is, once again, perfect for swimming, fishing, or paddling. The beach is also part of the larger  Gateway National Recreation Area,  which has miles of hiking and biking trails for when you've had enough of the sand. 

Bethany Beach, Delaware

Picturesque Bethany Beach is covered with grassy dunes sprouting up around the wooden boardwalk that goes on for a half mile. Come here for a stroll or sit and savor the sun for as long as you can before checking out the nearby shops and food vendors.

Cape Henlopen State Park, Delaware

Cape Henlopen State Park , which can be found at the mouth of the Delaware Bay, features more than six miles of pristine coastline, including the Point, the exact spot where the bay meets the Atlantic Ocean. After spending some time at the beach, head to the Seaside Nature Center to learn more about the area's flora and fauna. 

Ocean City, Maryland

Looking for a really, really big beach? Then, it's time to plan a trip to Ocean City, home to 10 miles of sand. The beach here is ideal for everything you'd ever want to do by the shore: surf, kayak, build sandcastles, play volleyball, and more. Ocean City also prides itself on its plentiful free activities in the summer, including movie nights and concerts. 

Assateague Island, Maryland

Yes, there are two miles of beaches you can relax on at Assateague Island. But rather than park yourself in one spot for an entire day, stop in, get some sun, then go off and explore this fantastic island . Hike, see the lighthouse, and, if you're lucky, spot one of the famed wild horses running down the shore (just don't touch or feed them for your own safety). 

Virginia Beach, Virginia 

Virginia Beach is a lively slice of land where the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Ocean meet. The destination is known for its buzzing boardwalk, plentiful events, and a standout dining scene steps from the sand, making it easy to go back and forth between the water and good eating all day long.

Buckroe Beach, Virginia 

Further north from Virginia Beach, you will find  Buckroe Beach , a smaller stretch of sand that feels scaled back compared to its more bustling counterpart. Nags Head, North Carolina

What would a list of great Eastern Seaboard beaches be without mention of the Outer Banks? For the ultimate in solitude, head to Nags Head and its 12 miles of sandy shoreline. There are plenty of public access points — all you need to do is find a patch that's ideal for you and set up shop. Just make sure to pack enough water and snacks to last the day. If you really want to unplug, consider camping in the Outer Banks — at the Oregon Inlet Campground, you can fall asleep to the sound of the waves.

Emerald Isle, North Carolina

If you like the island life, make your way to Emerald Isle, which has fewer than 4,000 permanent residents, but swells in population during the busy summer season. The 1,000-foot-long Bogue Inlet Pier offers a chance to fish for mullet, king mackerel, and more while seeing the beach from a whole new perspective.

Located along South Carolina's  Grand Strand  coast sits Myrtle Beach, one of the most popular beach destinations in the state . Made up of several connected beaches, the sand here goes on for miles. It's ideal for families, friends, and all who want to soak in the rays together. Plus, its proximity to nearby restaurants, accommodations, and attractions makes it easy to pop in or stay for days. 

Burkes Beach, South Carolina

North Carolina isn't the only state with island paradise beaches. Just look to Burkes Beach in the ever-popular Hilton Head Island for proof.  Burkes Beach  is often considered the more local of the island's beaches, meaning it's both a bit more relaxed and comes with fewer restaurants nearby. That said, the trade-off of peace and quiet just might be worth having to pack a sandwich along with your other essentials .

Rock City, Georgia

If you’re looking for one of the best fall destinations on the East Coast , you have to see Rock City . This hidden gem tourist attraction is located in a tiny town named Lookout Mountain , Georgia.

During the fall, Rock City hosts a special fall festival called Rocktoberfest. The event celebrates the location’s German heritage through food, music, dancing, pumpkin painting, and storytelling . Kids especially love watching the Fall Fairy arrive to bring autumn to Rock City. They can also hang out with the Troll King as he tells fairy tales on the mountain.

The best reason to visit Rock City during the fall, however, is the gorgeous waterfall . To find it, you’ll follow the Enchanted Trail through moss-covered boulders until you reach a suspension bridge over a canyon . The waterfall can be found on the other side.

Make sure you head to the viewing platform located above the falls before you leave. You can see seven US states off in the distance while you’re standing in that spot!

The Chanticleer Inn Bed and Breakfast is located just across the street from the Rock City walking trail. It’s one of the closest and coziest places to stay during your visit.

Rock city lies 120 miles northwest of Atlanta and can be reached by car in less than 2 hours. If you’re coming from Chattanooga instead, it’s just 6 miles away and will take you 15 minutes.

Salem, Massachusetts

Salem, MA is one of the most famous fall vacation spots on the East Coast of the USA .  Dubbed the “Witch City”, Salem simply does fall better. A trip here delivers vibrant fall foliage, spooky witch trials history, and filming sites from the classic Halloween movie, Hocus Pocus.

Visitors can learn about 17th-century Salem and beyond by taking a historical walking tour .  To learn even more about the infamous witch trials of the late 1600’s Puritan society, pay a visit to sights like the Witch Museum and Witch House .  Don’t forget to stop at the Witch Trials Memorial to pay homage to the victims that were executed during the trials.

Fans of Hocus Pocus can visit many filming sights from the movie , including Salem Common, the Pioneer Village, and Ropes Mansion.  It is also possible to visit Max and Dani’s house, but only from the outside, as it’s technically someone’s private home.

For a gorgeous autumn stroll past stately homes, make your way through the McIntire Historic District.  Lanes like Chestnut Street and Essex Street are at their prettiest with colorful leaves blown across their manicured lawns.

Salem is easy to reach in thirty to forty minutes from Boston by car or train (via the purple line). Visitors can fly into Boston Logan Airport, and either stay in Boston and day trip north or stay right in Salem. 

The Hawthorne Hotel is one of the nicest hotels in Salem, and is centrally located within walking distance of the best sights. 

For casual dining, the Gulu-Gulu Café features a full menu of coffee drinks, beer on tap, and a number of vegan and other comfort food dishes. For upscale fare in a beautifully restored interior, book a reservation at Ledger Restaurant & Bar for modern, 19th-century-inspired dishes.

New York City, New York

New York City is an evergreen city that can be toured in any season but is incredibly wonderful during the fall season . While other towns lose out on various activities, New York City shines with its never-ending list of things to do when the chilly season approaches.

When visiting New York, you’ll want to arrive at the closest and most accessible airport; JFK is an excellent airport as it offers a surplus of flights from various regions around the world and has excellent public transportation routes for heading to the city and neighboring areas such as Brooklyn or New Jersey.

When choosing a place to stay, you’ll want to consider food venues in the area, access to stores, accessibility to nearby metro stations, and other forms of public transportation.

A great hotel that fits this bill and is nestled in between lower Manhattan and Financial Square is the Millennium Downtown New York Hotel . This hotel is also pet-friendly if you’re traveling with a furry friend, offers on-site parking for a fee, and is situated near a metro station for easy access to the subway. 

When visiting New York during the fall, you’ll want to include activities that allow you to escape the fall chill; these can be shows, musicals, museums, food tours, shopping, and other things.

One of the most recommended activities is enjoying a Broadway show on Broadway, some of the most popular shows are the Lion King, BeetleJuice, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Moulin Rouge, Wicked and more. Tickets sell out quickly, so book them at least a few weeks ahead of your planned trip.

Another note-worthy activity that only takes place during Halloween is the annual New York Village Halloween Parade . This famous parade has been a part of New York City culture for almost 50 years and features special surprise guests, marching bands, decorated floats, out-of-this-world costumes, and a stellar after-party.

If you would like to participate in the parade, book your tickets so you can have a spot on a float or enjoy the show from a VIP entrance. Otherwise, watching the parade is free for parade-goers viewing from the streets.

Whatever you choose, visiting New York during the fall is an absolute must and is sure to have something fun for everyone. 

Shenandoah National Park, Virginia

Shenandoah National Park is easily one of the best fall destinations on the east coast of the United States. Located in Virginia and close to the capital of the United States, this national park is perfect for a fall getaway.

Shenandoah is home to many beautiful hiking trails, mountain views, and wildlife-watching opportunities . In the fall, it turns into an autumn paradise as the leaves change colors and the mountains turn into a mixture of oranges and reds.

Even though it is close to the city, Shenandoah feels like worlds away.

Fall is one of the best times to visit the park because of the beautiful color change in the leaves, but also because the weather is beautiful and perfect for hiking . Between September and November, the lows can be as low as the lower 30s (F) and the highs as warm as the mid-70s (F). This makes it wonderful weather to enjoy a stroll through the park.

One of the best things to do in Shenandoah is hiking. There are many hikes to choose from that range from short and accessible paths to multi-day backpacking trips in Shenandoah . If you don’t want to hike, you can also drive the famous Skyline drive and stop at the incredible viewpoints.

If you want to visit Shenandoah, there are two historic lodges in the park that make for the perfect place to stay: The Skyland and Big Meadows lodges . You can also check out the vacation rentals in the area, you’ll find plenty of cozy cabins.

You can also commute from the DC area if you want to combine your time with a trip to the nation’s capital.

Finger Lakes , New York

One of the best East Coast vacation spots to explore during the fall is the Finger Lakes . The eleven skinny lakes, surrounded by a fiery forest of reds, yellows, oranges, and purples , are truly mesmerizing.

On top of the lakes, the area is also known for an abundance of waterfalls, profound gorges, and towering cliffs which is incredibly scenic year-round, but in the fall, it’s especially jaw-dropping with the vibrant colors.

One of the best ways to enjoy the fall colors is to get your heart pumping and explore one of the hundreds of Finger Lakes hiking trails . The trails are peppered throughout the area; some take you through lush forests to waterfalls, while others will challenge your skills with a bit of waterfall climbing!

In addition to exploring the beautiful outdoors, the area is also well known for its wineries , including award-winning Rieslings. One spot you shouldn’t miss is Atwater Vineyards , located on a hill above Seneca Lake. It’s worth a visit just for the views, but they also have a house-made vegan cheese plate that pairs perfectly with all of their wines, especially the fruity Rose of Pinot Noir!

The easiest way to get to the Finger Lakes is to drive ; the closest airport is in Rochester, NY. It is essential to keep in mind that the F i nger Lakes region is enormous — approximately the size of New Jersey, so keep in mind that you might not be able to get to everything on your list during your first trip, but that’s the perfect reason to return! 

When you’re booking accommodations, it is recommended to stay in a couple spots to be able to experience more of the region.

A couple great towns to check out are Watkins Glen and Ithaca . In downtown Ithaca there is a charming B&B, The William Henry Miller Inn , they have the best veggie-friendly breakfast — you won’t be disappointed.

You’ll also find plenty of vacation rentals in the area, renting a lakeside cottage can be a fantastic idea.

Plymouth, Massachusetts

Plymouth, MA, has something to offer during all seasons—but this destination on the East Coast truly shines in the fall! Plymouth is located on Plymouth Bay, so the city experiences cool, breezy weather all year. The summers are warm, and the winters are cold and long, which makes fall the perfect time to explore all Plymouth, MA, has to offer! 

Famously known as “America’s Hometown,” Plymouth is the destination where the Pilgrims stepped off the Mayflower in 162 0. Because of this, Plymouth, MA, is filled with many historical sites, museums, and landmarks to explore.

Of all the best things to do in Plymouth, MA , you can’t miss the Plimoth Patuxet Museums , where you can explore the Historic Patuxet, English Village, Mayflower II, and the Plimoth Grist Mill. 

You can also stroll along Court Street, the main street in Plymouth, and see historical sites along the way, like Plymouth Rock or Howland House . When you’re ready to take a break from sightseeing, grab a bite to eat at Mamma Mia’s of Plymouth Waterfront, or go wine tasting at Plymouth Bay Winery.  

While the weather is nice, take the opportunity to get outside and go hiking or biking in the Myles Standish State Forest . If you’re visiting in October, make the short drive to Warham for the Cranberry Harvest Celebration , where you can help harvest cranberries in a cranberry bog! 

If you’d like to stay close to all the attractions in Plymouth, stay in the Hotel Inn Express – Plymouth , an IGH Hotel. You’ll also find plenty of great vacation rentals in town or along the coast.

Plymouth is also a great day trip or weekend getaway from Boston or Cape Cod , so if you’re trying to squeeze in as many cities as possible during your autumn vacation to the East Coast, basing yourself in one of these locations is a great alternative. 

New River Gorge National Park, West Virginia

New River Gorge is America’s newest national park. With its s cenic views, beautiful hikes, and endless forest , this is one of the best fall getaways on the east coast for nature lovers. 

The national park has endless activities during the fall season from hiking and biking to river rafting. For the best fall viewpoints in New River Gorge National Park, go on one of the many hikes that offer incredible views of the gorge. 

The Long Point Trail is a moderate hike that ends with panoramic views of the gorge and the New River Gorge Bridge , one of the highest bridges in America . If you’re brave enough, you can even walk across the bridge on a 2-foot wide catwalk beneath the bridge.

Another fantastic hike is the Grandview Rim Trail, an easy hike with views overlooking the New River. The views during the fall are packed with vibrant colors and the site is worth seeing. 

Fayetteville is the town closest to the national park with many restaurants for lunch or dinner. Try Wanderlust Creative Foods for a meal – the food is excellent.

Most hotels are around 30-minutes outside of the park, and the Sleep Inn  in Beaver is a good option. Otherwise, book a cabin or cottage near the park for something secluded with great views.

The nearest airport is in Charleston , West Virginia, which is about an hour’s drive away from New River Gorge. You will need to rent a car to access the national park . 

Stowe, Vermont

Stowe, Vermont, is a fantastic year-round destination, but comes fall, it turns magical . It’s one of the best getaways on the East Coast to see fall foliage and hike through fiery woods reaching stunning lookouts over the mountains.

Hiking is the best thing to do in Stowe during the fall , but don’t worry, if hiking is not your thing, some lifts are open year-round and you can easily reach beautiful viewpoints without much effort.

Hike one of the trails to the top of Mount Mansfield or drive the auto toll road to get a panoramic view of the mountains and the village. Once there, you can get down ziplining to admire the fall foliage from above.

You can also hike to Stowe Pinnacle or to Bingham Falls and Moss Glen Falls, which are just gorgeous to see during the fall season.

In town, make sure to take a tour of the Ben & Jerry Factory and sample some fresh apple cider donuts and pressed apple cider  at  Cold Hollow Cider Mill . 

For a place to stay, consider the  Trapp Family Lodge  and  The Lodge at Spruce Peak , both are popular mountain resorts offering great services and good amenities.

You’ll also find plenty of  vacation rentals , from condos with mountain views to luxurious chalets-

Baxter State Park, Maine

With over 200,000 acres of wilderness, Baxter State Park should definitely be on your East Coast fall vacations bucket list . Whether you’re hiking, biking, or driving through the park, be prepared to see some of the best fall foliage in New England.

During fall, there are many hikes you can go on, from easy to strenuous ones, from a few hours to a few days. If it’s not too cold yet you can also rent a kayak and explore one of the park’s many lakes . Thrill-seekers can undertake climbing the 5,267-foot high Mount Katahdin.

You can camp in the park until October 22nd but you’ll have to bring everything you’ll need and be ready to rough it up. Otherwise, book a cabin near the park, many are on Ambajejus Lake offering beautiful views of Mt. Katahdin.

White Mountains Fall Road Trip, New Hampshire

One of the best ways to explore New England during the fall is to plan a fall road trip ! The White Mountains in New Hampshire are one of the best destinations to visit during the fall season. Driving past scenic lookouts, going on easy hikes , and stopping by quaint towns , you’ll be able to witness fall at its best.

Drive along the 100-mile White Mountain Trail , starting at the White Mountains Visitor’s Center in North Woodstock, passing through  Franconia Notch State Park  then   Crawford Notch State Park . Stop along the way to explore cascading waterfalls, covered bridges, dozens of mountain and valley outlooks, and maybe go on a couple of hikes.

You can also drive the famous Kancamagus Highway if you have the time or go on a scenic train ride through the area.

In the nearby towns, you’ll find plenty of fall festivals, fairs, and events, check out the White Mountains’ event calendar to see what’s going on when you’re visiting.

You’ll find plenty of cabins and cottages available for rent along the way.

Wilmington, Delaware

Wilmington is one of the best East Coast hidden gems and will make an ideal fall getaway destination. With a charming downtown and many outdoor recreational areas and parks, Wilmington offers plenty of ways to enjoy the fall season.

In town, make sure to tour the gorgeous Nemours Mansion and Garden , check out the riverfront, and visit a couple of museums. Then, take a stroll through marshes and gardens at the DuPont Environmental Education Center and visit the Russell W. Peterson Wildlife Refuge .

Held the third weekend of September, the Delaware Saengerbund Oktoberfest is a must-see. You’ll find plenty of events and festivals going on during the fall, make sure to check out the town’s event calendar .

Outside of town, the Alapocas Run State Park is perfect to go hiking, biking, or rock climbing , and enjoy the fall foliage.

If you are planning a road trip, make sure to drive the Brandywine Valley National Scenic Byway for some stunning scenery. The region is also famous for its craft breweries, wineries, and meaderies. From Wilmington, you can take a tour along the Two Bridges Wine Trail or the Brandywine Wine Trail.

Annapolis, Maryland

Annapolis is one of the best fall destinations on the East Coast. Offering plenty of fall festivals and activities , as well as opportunities to get outside to see the fall foliage , Annapolis is a great spot for a weekend getaway on the coast.

Fall is the best time of the year to take a historic ghost walking tour , a fun way to explore the city and learn more about its haunted past. Don’t miss touring the Maryland State House.

Check out the Greenstreet Gardens Fall Festival. Kids will love the five-acre corn maze, taking a trip around the farm on a hayride, exploring the pumpkin patch, and many more activities. The Maryland Renaissance Festival   is also a must-do for kids and adults alike.

If you are visiting on September 25th, check out the West Annapolis Oktoberfest , a lot of fun and an opportunity to sample some local delicacies.

To go hiking to see some fall foilage head to Bacon Ridge Natural Area. Beverly Triton Nature Park, Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary, or Ellen O. Moyer Nature Park (don’t miss the Annapolis Maritime Museum).

If you need a hotel, check out Graduate Annapolis , one of the best-rated hotels in town and perfectly located. If you want something more intimate, check out the Historic Inns of Annapolis or Flag House Inn , both come highly recommended.

You can also book a vacation rental in the downtown area to be close to most sights and entertainment options.

Blue Ridge Parkway Road Trip, North Carolina

The Blue Ridge Parkway is incredible to drive any time of the year, but there’s something magical about seeing the leaves turn different shades of red and yellow. Take a few days to explore the parkway, stopping along the way for short hikes and to take in the views from the road’s many lookouts.

The 469-mile parkway starts in the Shenandoah Valley in Northern Virginia and ends in Southwestern North Carolina, passing near national parks, mountain ranges, quaint towns, and busy cities. You can plan many stops along the way, depending on how long you have and what you want to visit.

Among the most popular fall hikes along the Blue Ridge Mountains, don’t miss hiking to Looking Glass Rock in Pisgah National Forest , the Auxier Ridge Loop in Red River Gorge , Old Rag Trail in Shenandoah National Park , Blackwater Canyon in Monongahela National Forest, and Table Rock Mountain in Linville Gorge .

You’ll find several campgrounds and some lodges just off the parkway, or you can exit it and stay at one of the nearby towns. There are plenty of vacation rentals that won’t take you far off of the road.

Mountain Bridge Wilderness Area, South Carolina

With 12,000 acres of woodlands and hundreds of miles of hiking trails , the Mountain Bridge Wilderness Area will make a perfect fall getaway for those wanting to spend time outside, witnessing the breathtaking changes of colors that take place this time of the year.

You’ll find trails of all lengths from easy to strenuous hikes , depending on your fitness level and how long you want to spend in the area. Make sure to pack plenty of water and snacks, as well as warmer clothing just in case.

You can pick up a map at Caesars Head  or  Jones Gap state parks ‘ visitor center, all trails are color-coded and easy to follow. Raven Cliff Falls, Cleveland Cliffs, and Ashmore Heritage Preserve are also part of the Mountain Bridge.

Among the most popular trails in the area, you’ll find Rainbow Falls, El Lieutenant Rock Dome, Bald Rock, and Symmes Chapel at Pretty Place.

If you want to take a quick fall road trip , drive the Cherokee Foothills Scenic Highway, stopping along the way for short hikes and to enjoy the scenery.

You’ll find several primitive backcountry campsites within the Mountain Bridge Wilderness Area, you’ll need to book beforehand. For something more comfortable, you can book a stay at one of the many hotels in Greenville or book a lodge or cabin in the area.

From quaint, quiet towns in Maine and mountains in Vermont to a magical island off of Rhode Island’s mainland and a Bavarian-style city in Georgia, there are many undiscovered locations to suit every kind of traveller.

One of my top missions when I travel is to find the places we don’t often read about or see on Instagram. 

It’s in these places that you find the true joys of exploring new places – connecting with unique people, exploring barely-touched nature, and taking time to escape the hustle and bustle.

In this guide, you’ll find secret beaches, enchanting mountain towns, unique places to stay, and insider tips to the best East Coast hidden gems.

From one of my favourite cities in Maine all the way down to a secret Florida island, the United States’ eastern coast is home to some of the nation’s most magical destinations. Let’s get off the beaten path and check them out! 

1. Biddeford, Maine

After years of dreaming about visiting Maine, I finally did it. And already I can’t wait to go back. 

Filled to the brim with secret beaches and charming towns, Maine will always leave you wanting more.

Of course, the ever-popular town of Portland is amazing; however, just below it is one of the best hidden gems on the East Coast: Biddeford.

Biddeford might be Maine’s youngest city. But it’s bursting with exciting things to see and do. Here are some top recommendations: 

• Fortune’s Rock Beach:  a secret 2-mile sandy beach that’s beautiful, quiet, and pet-friendly.
• Clifford Park:  a community park with trails, wildlife, and waterways.
• Ferry Beach State Park:  a peaceful park with trails and beach access.
• Elements Books Coffee Beer:  eclectic bookshop with coffee, beer, and walls lined with new and used books.

Where to Stay in Biddeford

When I visited Maine, I was travelling in my camper van. It’s perfect for this way of travel as there are many established campgrounds around the area. 

Sun Outdoors  is a resort-style campground close to the beach that’s got it all. For a more laid-back camping experience, check out  Homestead by the River .

If you prefer vacation rentals or hotel stays, there are tons.  Mermaid House is a cool vacation home perfect for a family (or two) or a group of friends.

2. Stowe, Vermont

When we think of Vermont, we think of cold and snowy weather. Naturally, this makes for excellent skiing vacations if that’s your thing.

However, if you’re like me and winter activities really aren’t your thing, Stowe is the perfect summer destination to check out. 

Located in the mountains in northern Vermont, Stowe boasts beautiful nature trails, mountain scenery, and cosy villages. These are some of the best things to see and do: 

• Stowe Cider:  quirky taproom with games and delicious ciders.
• Sunset Rock:  easy, fun hike through the woods that ends at an overlook of Stowe downtown and surrounding mountains.
• Gold Brook Covered Bridge: a charming wooden bridge connected to local folklores; offers a great photo op. 

Where to Stay in Stowe

From cosy inns to mountain resorts, Stowe offers some of the most unique places to stay on the East Coast. 

The historic  Hob Knob Inn  is nestled in the forest, while  Goldilocks Cabin  is just a few minutes from Stowe’s historic village.

3. Oaks Bluff, Massachusetts

Suppose you’ve dreamed of visiting the iconic Martha’s Vineyard but also want to explore hidden gem vacation spots on the East Coast, then Oaks Bluff is the ideal spot. 

Oaks Bluff is a historical town on the water offering a perfect getaway for both fun and relaxation. It’s home to incredible beaches and iconic gingerbread house cottages. 

So, what else is worth checking out in Oaks Bluff? 

• Ocean Park: waterfront views, grassy areas, and gorgeous homes.
• Waban Park:  an event space by the beach that often hosts music, food, and arts festivals. 
• Eastville Point Beach:  stunning blue waters and unmatched sunset views. 

Where to Stay in Oaks Bluff

While Oaks Bluff is small, there’s no shortage of accommodations. Whether you’re interested in camping, lowkey hotels, or fancy inns, there’s something for every kind of traveller. 

One of the most unique places to stay on the East Coast is actually right here in Oaks Bluff –  Narragansett House . This bed & breakfast features bright, charming guest rooms with unique decor.

4. Block Island, Rhode Island

If a serene beach getaway like those you see in the movies is what you’re looking for, Block Island is that place! 

You can travel to this small island by plane or a short ferry ride from the mainland. Once you arrive, you can head to any spot by the ocean for endless miles of free, public beachfront and many secluded areas.

While relaxing on the seafront is on everyone’s to-do list in Block Island, there are other activities well-worth checking out, too.  

• Rodman’s Island:  a   large nature reserve with local wildlife, a hiking area, and beach access.
• Mohegan Bluffs:  100+ steps that lead to the top of 200-foot cliffs surrounding a magical secluded beach.
• Southeast Lighthouse:  a stunning 1800s lighthouse on top of a cliff. 

Tip –   I recommend renting a bicycle and wandering around the Island, where you can find many streets lined with shops, restaurants, and historic sites. 

Where to Stay on Block Island

Like many Northeast destinations, Block Island is dotted with inns and hotels.  The Sullivan House  sits next to the beach, and its romantic charm makes for the ideal getaway for travel couples. 

Then you have beach house resorts like  Block Island Beach House , which is perfect for group vacations with friends.

5. Madison, Connecticut

Just 20 minutes from the more well-known city of New Haven, Madison is one of the best small-town East Coast hidden gems. 

Madison is a great place to live like a local for a few days. Its walkable area makes it easy to explore its fascinating culture and nature.

Be sure to check out these spots: 

• Hammonasset Beach State Park:  a relaxing beach with a boardwalk, trails, and camping.
• Timberlands:  a massive hiking area surrounded by natural beauty.
• Downtown Madison: walkable area close to Tuxis Pond with boutiques, cafes, restaurants, and more.

If you enjoy camping, you’re going to love Madison for its many campgrounds!

The Homestead is a fan-favourite accommodation with its private beach area and homey decor. There are also charming hotels and cosy inns.

6. Ithaca, New York

On a recent road trip to the Northeast, Ithaca quickly became one of my favourite East Coast hidden gems. I’ve even considered moving there because I love it so much! 

What I appreciated most about Ithaca is that it’s bursting with friendly locals – a far cry from your typical New York vibe.

It’s also situated next to the beautiful Cayuga Lake, with most sites offering picture-perfect views.

While Ithaca is mainly known for Cornell University, this quaint city has no shortage of fun activities such as:

• Stewart Park:  a gorgeous lakefront park.
• Indian Creek Farm:  a produce market with a massive farm open to exploring. 
• Downtown Ithaca:  an eclectic area with shopping and dining.
• Wells Fall:  a short walk to a beautiful waterfall. 

Where to Stay in Ithaca

When I went to Ithaca, I was  van-camping  and stayed at a Hipcamp. With that said, there are also plenty of great hotel options in Ithaca. 

Cayuga Lake Inn  is a cosy bed & breakfast with lake views. To stay in the heart of downtown, check out the  Ithaca Marriott .

7. Rehoboth Beach, Delaware

Rehoboth Beach is a vibrant beach town perfect for a summer trip to the ocean. It boasts 30 miles of stunning coastline and offers tons of beach activities. 

While many Delaware locals love a trip to Rehoboth, it’s often overlooked by beach bums looking for their next vacation destination.

Its most famous attraction is the beach boardwalk, lined with shops and restaurants. Other activities and sites to enjoy in Rehoboth Beach are:

• Poodle Beach:  a change of scenery from the main beach that dog beachgoers adore.
• Lake Gerar  Park: a   tranquil lakeside park with a walking path and fishing pier.
• Funland:  a small but enjoyable amusement park.
• Gordons Pond State Park:  a waterfront state park with nature trails and beach access.

Where to Stay in Rehoboth Beach

While there aren’t many hotels in Rehoboth, the best ones are close to the beach. 

Ocean Glass Inn  offers a laid-back beach vibe, while  The Bellmoor Inn and Spa  is a luxurious, adults-only hotel. 

You can also find many vacation rental options around Rehoboth on sites like VRBO and Airbnb.

8. Roanoke, Virginia

If you’re looking for a unique place to visit on the East Coast with tons of outdoor adventures, you’ll love Roanoke. 

It’s nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains and offers incredible views alongside endearing small-town charm.

It’s easy to spend your entire trip outdoors. Here are some of my favourite activities in Roanoke:

• Smith Mountain Lake:  the second largest freshwater lake in VA, where you can go camping and enjoy water activities.
• Mill Mountain Park:  home to the iconic Roanoke star and boasts scenic hiking and biking trails atop the mountain.
• Carvins Cove Natural Reserve: a massive park with various trails and incredible views. 

Where to Stay in Roanoke

I prefer camping while exploring Roanoke to enjoy the unmatched outdoor experiences. Smith Mountain Lake or Explore Park are both great options, but there are many others. 

If hotels or vacation rentals are more your style, you can also find those in Roanoke.  Shirley’s Bed & Breakfast  is my top choice – a log homestay tucked away from the hustle.

9. Little Switzerland, North Carolina

Little Switzerland is easily one of the coolest places to visit on the East Coast. 

This charming mountain community is situated 3,000 feet above sea level in the  North Carolina  mountains. Honestly, the views are some of the best I’ve ever seen!

While you could easily spend your day sitting on a vacation rental deck taking in the scenery, be sure to check out these Little Switzerland adventures : 

• Emerald Village:  a group of 12 gem, mining, and historical attractions (closed during winter).
• Grassy Creek Falls:  a large waterfall surrounded by nature trails. 
• The DiamondBack Road:  a winding mountain highway that offers incredible views.

Where to Stay in Little Switzerland

I recommend taking advantage of one of Little Switzerland’s many inns and lodges in the mountains. 

You’ll soon see why they are considered unique places to stay on the East Coast, with each providing a one-of-a-kind experience.

10. Greenville, South Carolina

Greenville is an up-and-coming city nestled at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Once a small town, it’s now booming with fantastic food, outdoor adventure, and cultural events.

With various things to do and see (and eat!) in Greenville, you can easily spend a week or two. Here are some of my top recommendations:

• Falls Park:  a nature lover’s paradise with green spaces, benches, walking paths, and gardens. 
• Downtown Greenville: an energetic area bursting with restaurants, cafes, bars, and shops. Check out Tupelo Honey for a delicious southern fare.
• Paris Mountain State Park:  a beautiful park with fishing, swimming, hiking, and biking.

Where to Stay in Greenville

As Greenville has started growing, you can find more and more vacation rentals and hotels throughout the city. 

Aloft  is a modern hotel in the heart of downtown Greenville, where you can enjoy an on-site bar, restaurant, and swimming pool.

11. Folly Beach, South Carolina

Folly Beach is one of the best hidden gem vacation spots on the East Coast. 

Having lived nearby in  Charleston for many years, Folly Beach holds a special place in my heart. This small but lively beach town offers the perfect getaway if you’re looking to unwind. 

Aside from lying on the beach and enjoying water activities at Folly Beach, here are some other top things to see and do:

• Dining:  Lost Dog and Taco Boy are amongst some of the best restaurants on Folly Beach.
• James Island County Park:  a tranquil park with hiking, biking, picnicking, and camping.
• Downtown Charleston: a   bustling area with shopping, dining, nightlife, and historical sites; about a 15-minute drive from Folly Beach. 

Where to Stay on Folly Beach

My favourite places to stay on Folly Beach are vacation rentals near the beach and camping at James Island County Park. There are also several great hotels, including the stunning Tides Hotel located right on the water.

12. Helen, Georgia

I recently visited Helen, Georgia and was blown away! I never expected this unassuming city to be amongst the cool places to visit on the East Coast. 

When I went for its iconic Oktoberfest event, I quickly learned that Helen has a lot to offer for a weekend getaway.

This adorable mountain town is known for Bavarian-style buildings, but that’s not all. Be sure also to c heck out these cool places and experiences:

• Hardman Farm Heritage Trail:  a moderate, peaceful hike along the River.
• Habersham Winery:  a locally-owned winery well worth a visit.
• Unicoi Hill Park:  a   park off the beaten path with a waterfall, walking paths, and grassy areas. 
• Downtown Helen:  a unique Bavarian-style area with shops, restaurants, and pubs. 

Where to Stay in Helen

As Helen started welcoming travellers several years back, hotels and inns have been popping up around the city. 

Valhalla Resort Hotel  looks like something out of a movie with stunning mountain panorama and distinctive decor. There are also simpler hotels closer to the city’s centre.

13. Amelia Island, Florida

Last up for the best hidden gem vacation spots on the East Coast is another dreamy beach destination. And a must-visit if you’re ever planning a trip to Florida . 

Amelia Island is a barrier island situated on Florida’s Atlantic coast. With miles of sandy beaches and an abundance of local wildlife, it’s a nature lover’s paradise!

So, what is there to do on Amelia Island aside from relaxing on the beach?

• Egan’s Creek Greenway:  an   Instagram-worthy creekside trail with unmatched views and unique wildlife sightings.
• Fort Clinch State Park:  miles of nature trails and coastline.
• Historic Fernandina Beach District: an area boasting trendy shops, restaurants, and bars along with some historical sites. 

Where to Stay on Amelia Island

There’s a great selection of accommodations on Amelia Island, with various hotels and vacation rental companies. I recommend splurging on a hotel that’s close to the water, like the quaint  Seaside Amelia Inn .

Some people also opt to stay closer to the city by Fernandina Beach. While the city centre is just a couple of miles from Amelia Island, there’s a lot more to do.

 Personally, I prefer the more tranquil vibe on Amelia Island.

President Joe Biden and former president Donald Trump will face off for their first debate of the 2024 election cycle later this month.

CNN, the host of the June 27 debate in Atlanta , recently released additional rules: Both candidates' microphones will be muted until it is their turn to speak, and they won't be allowed to interact with campaign staff during the two commercial breaks.

Trump and Biden skirted the  Commission on Presidential Debates and opted for earlier debates this year. The second debate is scheduled for Sept. 10, hosted by ABC.

It is unlikely that independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr.  will meet the requirements to participate in the debate.

The first of two scheduled presidential debates ahead of the 2024 election will become the earliest debate in the history of a campaign as Democratic incumbent Joe Biden and third-time Republican candidate Donald Trump face off once again.

Simulcasts and extra coverage will be available to watch on CBS and C-SPAN. CNN will host this first debate from its Atlanta headquarters. There will be no audience present so that the candidates can maximize their allotted time, and the debaters’ microphones will be muted when they aren’t speaking.

NewsNation will broadcast “Debate Night with Chris Cuomo” starting at 8 p.m. Eastern and 7 p.m. Central time in addition to a simulcast of the event at 9 p.m. Eastern time. NBC News and MSNBC will simulcast the event as well. NBC News NOW and NBCNews.com will also carry coverage.

ABC News, OAN, Newsmax, Newsmax 2, Noticias Telemundo, PBS and Scripps News round out the networks that will also air the debate. Spectrum News will simulcast the CNN presidential debate on June 27 beginning at 9 p.m. ET and host special post-debate coverage at approximately 10:37 p.m. ET.

When is the 2024 presidential debate? Date, time and how to watch Biden, Trump

President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump are set to face off in the first presidential debate of the 2024 election Thursday, June 27.

The matchup is breaking tradition: Instead of being organized by the Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD) and presented across different networks, the candidates decided to bypass the commission and instead participate in two network-produced debates. First up is the "CNN Presidential Debate" hosted by CNN in its Atlanta studios.

This first debate will also have no live audience, unlike previous years.

Here's everything you need to know about where and when to watch the candidates' first showdown of the 2024 cycle.

Trump-Biden debate: Little new insight into policy goals

President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump faced off in Thursday's presidential debate.

Hosted by CNN, it was the earliest-ever debate in a presidential race, taking place before the Republican and Democratic conventions in July and August -- when both Trump and Biden will officially accept their party's nominations.

Bitter debate offers little new insight into Biden, Trump policy goals

For the most part, tonight's debate revealed nothing new about what Biden and Trump think on major issues from the economy, immigration, foreign policy and reproductive rights.

Each candidate reiterated positions they've already touted countless times on the campaign stump.

Instead, they largely focused on criticizing each other's past records and lobbing personal attacks.

Trump asked if he will accept the results of the 2024 election

Though asked three times, former President Donald Trump never directly affirmed that he would accept the election results, no matter who wins.

Several times Trump noted that he would accept the results "if it's a fair and legal and good election" but wouldn't give a yes or no answer to moderator Dana Bash's inquiries.

The follow-ups came after Trump ultimately denounced political violence as "totally unacceptable."

After the moderator asked Trump three times whether he would accept the results of the November election, Joe Biden responded that he doubted Trump would "because you're such a whiner."

Biden noted there was no evidence of any widespread fraud in the 2020 election and that multiple courts had dismissed challenges brought by Trump's campaign.

Trump targets Biden during his closing argument

In his two-minute closing argument, Trump went after Biden's record abroad in a personal attack.

"They don't respect you throughout the world," he said.

Trump said he had the largest tax cut and the largest regulation cuts in history, but the country is now "exploding."

"We're a failing nation, but it's not going to be failing anymore," he said. "We're going to make it great again."

Biden delivers closing argument

"We have made significant progress from the debacle that was left by President Trump in his last term," Biden said.

Biden then went on to summarize some of his signature policies. On the economy, he vowed he will not raise taxes on anyone making under $400,000 a year and to continue his work to reduce health care costs, child care costs and give families financial breathing room.

"We're going to continue to fight to bring down inflation and give people a break," Biden said in closing.
