70+ World Travel Themed Home Decor Ideas

Pretty soon, I’ll have my first place of my own (I’ve moved out before, but I was always in some sort of dorm), and I’m super excited to buy all the furniture, decor, and everything else that goes with getting your own place. Given my very obvious travel addiction, I thought it would make sense for a lot of the home decor in my new apartment to be travel themed. I can’t make EVERYTHING travel themed (my boyfriend would kick me out before we even moved in), but let’s just say people won’t have to guess what I had in mind when decorating our new place. So, if you are moving into a new place, or just looking to do some redecorating, check out these world travel themed home decor ideas!

Travel Inspired Living Room Decorations

Travel throw pillows.

Pillows are a great way to add just a touch of travel decor to a living room. They’re not overly obnoxious, but still obvious. Plus, since they come in so many different colors, it’s not too terribly difficult to find one that would match your couch!

Stacked Travel Chests

I found out real fast when looking at furniture that end tables are surprisingly expensive. So, when I saw these on Amazon, I thought it was a really cool idea. Instead of the traditional end table (that may or may not have a small drawer to put things in), why not get suitcase styled chests? They’re stack-able and can store way more than your traditional end table.

Suitcase Shelves

I found these in one of the home decor stores I had visited and thought it was a cute idea. Instead of the traditional wooden shelves, get creative and use shelves that were decorated to look like suitcases. They’ll match your suitcase end tables!

Travel Coasters

If you don’t already have some souvenir drink coasters from your various trips around the world, you can get some world map drink coasters to make sure your new, nice tables don’t get ruined by condensation from drinking glasses.

I don’t think too many people use tissue box covers anymore, but I thought it was one of the more unique travel decor ideas. If nothing else, it’s a conversation piece!

Traditional Globes

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of travel decor? A globe of course! You can’t decorate your new place with a travel theme and not have at least one globe around.

Like I mentioned above, once you get that nice, new table, you don’t want it to be ruined from moisture from cold drinks or hot plates. Placemats are an easy and common fix to that problem. If you’re going to be buying placemats anyway, might as well make them travel themed, right?

It’s simple, and separate from the rest of the rooms in the house (in case you don’t want your guests overwhelmed by travel decor the moment they walk into your new place).

If you are looking to make the entire bathroom travel themed (instead of just having a touch of it), you can also get bath towels that are travel themed. It’s especially nice if you have a rack where you can sort of hang them on display when not in use.

If you don’t have a big dinning room table, or aren’t really the type of person to use placemats and a table runner, you can still add a bit of travel decor to meal time with these cool looking plates!

Travel Inspired Napkins

My mom always gives me a hard time because I have a bad habit of wiping my hands on my jeans instead of using a napkin (especially when eating greasy or salty foods), but if I had these napkins, I might be a little more inclined to use them (hint-hint mom: these would make a good moving gift).

Cutting boards are another one of those more subtle items that don’t necessarily get put on display. Since most traditional cutting boards are typically pretty bland, you can spice yours up by getting a travel decorated one.

I figured why not combine some of my biggest passions and add a little travel decor to my bookshelves?

If you’ve never heard of book boxes, don’t feel guilty. I hadn’t heard of them either until I started shopping for home decor! Book boxes are great for those book lovers (like me) that want their books to remain in mint condition. You can put your favorite books in book boxes to protect them from dust and moisture. Plus you can give your bookshelves more of a universal look (like the rustic library I mentioned above).

Because no desk would be complete without a pencil or pen holder.

This is what usually comes to mind when you think of travel decor (and usually some of the first results when looking online). You can always go with the traditional, school-like world map, but there are some really cool looking world maps out there if you’re looking for something a little more unique.

Scratch Off World Maps

In more recent years, scratch off world maps have become more popular. They’re a great way to showcase all of the different places you’ve been! My mom got me one for Christmas and I absolutely love it. However, all of the places I’ve been are pretty small, so it doesn’t look like I’ve scratched anything off, but I’m working on it!

Wall Clocks

This is another one of more simple travel decor ideas. It’s a common household decoration and easy to customize to your style. Plus, there are lots of different options out there, so it isn’t too difficult to find one you like.

Word Art and Hangings

You can find all sorts of quotes that have been turned into travel decor. I feel like almost every home decor store that I’ve walked into has had some sort of wall piece with an inspiration adventure quote on it. Even if you’re not looking to go all out with the travel theme, they’re something small and nice you can hang on the wall to express your passion for travel.

Light Switch Covers

I don’t know if I would replace every light switch cover in my new place with a travel inspired one, but I thought it was a unique way to incorporate travel into home decor. At this point though, the rest of the place is already travel themed, might as well make the light switches travel themed too.

Outlet Covers

If you’ve got travel themes lights switch covers, it only makes sense that you have travel inspired outlet covers too. If you have one, you just have to have the other!

I love travel themed items and have previously written posts on some of my favorite handmade travel themed wedding products and travel themed jewelry . I love globes, vintage maps, vacation photos, old postcards, etc. and love when I find items that incorporate travel themed elements into useful home decorations and furnishings. So we decided to put together another list on some great handmade travel themed home decor items.

These include pieces for all parts of the home from the office to the bedrooms and include everything from fridge magnets and lampshades to wall art and shower curtains. The items were also chosen to fit a wide range of decorating tastes and budgets with most items ranging in the USD $20 to $150 range.

Just so you know, many of the home decor items on this list we physically reviewed. Some were items we purchased or received as gifts, and others were given to us by artists for review. The other pieces are just ones I loved when searching for travel themed home furnishings online.

I am in love with the solar-powered globes from MOVA . We first spotted them spinning in a window display in a shop in Venice, Italy. We assumed they were spinning because of their base so were surprised when the shopkeeper put them in our hands and they kept spinning!

The globes spin on their own using solar power and magnets so they don’t need to be plugged in and there are no batteries to be changed. They just need light, either indirect light from the sun or indoor lights. They can also be put onto about any base.

In addition to world maps, they also sell ones depicting planets, the moon, artwork, and sports teams. They come in a variety of color schemes with several base options.

Travel Themed Coasters

Travel themed map stone coasters are a great way to add a bit of travel decor to any room. We especially love that these can all be personalized or customized as much as you want. The map design is decoupaged to the stone tile and treated with commercial grade paver sealant on both front and back, and felt backing is applied to the bottom of the coasters.

Keep your keepsakes, travel documents, or valuables in this hollow secret safe book that will hide in plain sight on your bookshelf. It is a h ardcover copy of a real book (we have To the Ends of the Earth: The Selected Travels of Paul Theroux ) with its original dustcover that has been hollowed out so there is an inside opening that is 4 7/8 inches wide x 8 long x 15/16 deep. Inserted magnets keep it closed even when it is standing upright.

Antique Style Map Pencil & Pen Holder

This little bicycle dish is really cute. This handmade bowl is made of white earthenware clay. The letters and design were stamped with dark brown ink – this one has a bicycle design on outside and word “Wanderlust” along the inner rim. Travel Themed Wall Decals 

Each vintage travel stamp  decal is made of high quality self-adhesive matte-finish vinyl. They are also available in a number of colors and sizes, and decals can be customized. They can be applied to many types of clean, flat (or lightly textured), and dry surfaces such as walls, doors, windows, mirrors, wood, and plexiglass. 

We applied these to our bedroom wall in our last bedroom, and enjoyed seeing them every morning when we woke up. We applied these carefully and slowly following the included directions and had no problem. We were also able to remove them a few years later when we moved with no issue.

A few years ago Scott designed a map of a train trip we took from Istanbul, Turkey to Pisa, Italy and we loved how much Scott was able to incorporate our specific route locations, text, and several of our travel photos into the design. This is a great scratch off map and a fun way to show where you have traveled in the world. It can also help you decide on your next vacation destination. The map is printed on high quality paper then covered with a gold foil layer. It shows over 10,000 cities and places and the package also includes a dust cloth, push pins, and metal scraper. The map measures 34.6 inches X 23.6 inches (88 X 60 cm).

We have this map and it is very detailed for its size and it was easy to scratch off the gold foil level. Individual U.S. states, Canadian provinces, and regions of large countries can also be distinguished so you can scratch off certain areas rather than the entire country.

I love traveling as much as I love handmade products! So whenever I travel, I make sure that I get to purchase handcrafts especially those made by local community artisans. There is just one time, I went to Chiang Mai in Thailand, I never had the chance to actually buy my souvenir, but thankfully I found a store called localbazaar who sells handmade crafts from Chiang Mai!

This post is so much fun!!! We actually own 2 of these… the map pin boards (which we got one year for our girls) and the scratch off map (which my daughter got for my husband). We always had fun moving the pin to our “next planned destination.” My husband loves maps, and these are terrific gifts. Decide what depth you want your shelves to be, then apply a layer of painter's tape to mark where you will cut the suitcases. You will also need to cut pieces of wood to the same size and shape as your suitcase. You use these for mounting. Plan out where you want each shelf to go. Once you've picked your locations, attach the wood pieces to the wall using 2 ½-inch screws. Then fit the luggage over the wood, and decide what to display on your new shelves.

You have two options for applying the decoupage glue. You can attach it directly to the candle or put it on the back side of the map. The map is a slightly easier option in this case because it is a flat surface, and the candle is round.

Try your best to cut the map to the same size as the candle before starting, but it doesn't have to be perfect. It should be slightly larger than the LED candle's surface. A paper cutter will make this task easier, but it's necessary. Glue the map onto your LED candle and smooth the surface, removing air bubbles. Fold the edges over the bottom of the candle, gluing it to the bottom. When using the decoupage paste, keeping your fingers clean is essential. If you get glue on them, wipe it off quickly on a clean cloth. Otherwise, your fingers can stick to the paper, making this project more challenging to complete. Using scissors, trim the map as close to the top of the LED candle as possible. Let the glue dry completely before switching on your candles and lighting up your new display.

Turn a globe into a lamp or shade

There are several ways to create these lovely travel-themed lamps, depending on what kind of globe you choose to use.  Upcycled Wonders  recommends cutting a traditional globe in half if you want to decorate a child's room, using the Northern hemisphere for one lampshade and the Southern hemisphere for the other. But despite their sophisticated air, the purpose of both can be a bit bewildering. I mean, what are throw pillows for? They’re purely decorative. But trunks. Now trunks have a purpose. Besides being nice decoration, they also hold stuff. So why not get one of those. Maybe one of these super cool trunks that look like suitcases. You might not actually be able to take them on an airplane with you – though you’re welcome to try I guess – but boy will they look snazzy around your home. Even if they’re not traveling anywhere, they’ll make you feel like you are. All while holding your stuff in neat, stylish containers.

14. Pensive Pillowcases

What home decor makeover would be complete without some new bedding? Those are decorative and purposeful. Sure your new throw pillows are nice. But I bet you could still do with an empowering pillowcase or two to curl up with at night, when those throw pillows get tossed off the bed because they’re too awkward and small to actually sleep with. You know what else is fun and useful? Mugs! Funny, punchy, and inspirational mugs. White mugs, black mugs, and travel mugs. Oh my! Because when we’re stuck at home, we need all the help we can get.

16. Stirring Shot Glasses

Last but not least, perhaps another good motivational item to have in your kitchen is another kind of drinkware guaranteed to put a pep in your step. I don’t know if you can call these travel home decor per se, but they sure are decorative and travel-friendly. There are many designs to choose from, all of which are fun and feisty enough to motivate you at home, and small enough to take that pep with you next time you travel. So when that other time zone on your new world clock strikes 5pm, you might want one of these handy to help kick off your trip to Margaritaville.

When I’m not travelling, one of the things that keeps me sane is surrounding myself with travel inspiration in all forms, whether it’s obsessively reading blogs or adding worldly touches to my home decor ( like this stupidly adorable savings bank shaped like a suitcase ).

And so, in the spirit of treating roamsickness with more travel dreams (probably a terrible idea but idk I’m not a doctor), here’s a roundup of some of the most beautiful and wickedly awesome  travel-related DIY projects that I could scour on the interwebs.

Through an absolutely genius use of Christmas lights, this beautiful map by Hazel and Ruby showcases where you’ve been in the world and is brilliantly customizable and simple to create. Bonus points for their lovely travel-themed display, and sweet globe collection.

This simple and tasteful way to showcase your wanderlust is absolutely perfect. I am in  love  with DIY Vintage Pushpin Map from Mountain Modern Life  because it’s minimalist enough to avoid tackiness, while still showing off your love of travel and all the places you’ve been. These mini map magnets from Surviving a Teacher’s Salary are not just adorable, but also rather classy (like a posh chihuahua having high tea). They can be made in just a few minutes, so they’re ideal for a quick and easy gift for that travel lover in your life.

An arsty way to put your best photos, memories, stubs and more on display! This tutorial from Kelly Purkey shows you how to do it. Although I think the 20 euros in the corner here would be better spent on waffles.

I love the travel jars – I actually started doing something very similar myself but with smaller craft jars. When I was about to leave the UAE where I had been living and working for eight months, I took some of the sand from our beach and our volleyball pitch and kept a few teeny tiny shells. I also looked after our fish tanks and had a pet hermit crab: when he met his final end, I kept his claw (possibly slightly weird?!) and the operculum from one of our snails that the before mentioned hermit crab ate, and stuck them all in the jar. I also had some absolutely tiny glass bottles for using in jewellery craft, and I put sand and two miniscule shells in them, and gifted them to my team before I left 🙂

Wow what a thoughtful and beautiful goodbye gift!! Those sound really beautiful, and such a good way to make use of souvenirs that would otherwise sit and collect dust. I’m guilty of hoarding random bits wherever I go, so to make them into something decorative would at least make my hoarding habit productive haha.

So hard to pick favourites! But yes those ones are great… and honestly so simple and genius. I have tons of random things I’ve collected over my travels so it’s always good to find ideas on how to put them to use (rather than have them collect dust).

Ahh I used to love scrapbooking! I have a massive collection of papers and stickers but haven’t really sat down to make anything in the past few years. I should definitely get back into it.

Slumberland has a large variety of headboards , including lovely upholstered and rustic wood slats to match your look. While it’s hard to find headboards that are truly travel-inspiring, you can find ones that work with other travel decor in your bedroom. Like European elegance, rustic outdoors and whimsical beach.

2. STORAGE Ideas for Bedroom Travel Decor

If you’re looking for travel-inspiring storage solutions for your bedroom decor, consider suitcases! These vintage suitcases from Lavinia’s Tea Party shop on Etsy are SO cute. Picking my favorite two to feature in the images was so incredibly hard! Some come in a set of three and others on their own. Love maps? Vintage florals, pastels or geometrics? Take a look! They’re perfect for storing photos, keepsakes and out-of-season accessories.

You can also find these handsome vintage-style suitcase trunks on Amazon. They come in a set of three, and are made of polywood faux leather. Perfect for stacking and storing.

Now, artwork is DEFINITELY in the eye of the beholder. So, I’m going to show you two very different approaches to something I think most of us love … the beach. And these two artists are amazing!!

First, The Colorful Cat Studio creates gorgeous watercolor artwork , with both originals and fine art giclée prints. For prints, you can choose among four types of paper to achieve the look you’re after. And if you LOVE maps (like me!), take a look at this printed map duvet cover from Mapology on Etsy. I assumed it’d be a bit scratchy, but reviewers say it’s nice and soft. Choose a vintage color theme, or opt for bolder, more colorful options.

Travel-themed books can be more than entertainment or textbooks for planning that epic trip. Beautiful travel photography compilations are pieces of art, and can be wonderful travel-themed bedroom decor ideas.

One idea is National Geographic’s “ Destinations of a Lifetime ,” available on Amazon. You can’t go wrong with possibly the MOST recognized source of epic travel photography in the world. Where the dramatic play of light and dark on massive mountain peaks will leave you breathless. And sleeping seal pups will melt your heart.

And if you’re going to have a plant (or three?) in your bedroom, lavender is the ideal choice. They’re pretty, edible AND recognized as a sleep-aid. Apparently lavender lowers your heart rate, blood pressure and stress levels. 

While plants aren’t necessarily travel-inspiring, they are for non green thumbs like me who have to visit a botanical garden to enjoy living plants! For minimalist travel-inspiring bedroom decor ideas, I love the linen world map cushion cover from The Travel Shop on Etsy. And rounding us out is the cute beach cushion cover with pretty embroidery, piping and zipper closure. Available on Amazon.

19. TABLE LAMPS for Bedroom Travel Decor Ideas

You need a lamp for your bedside table. So, you might as well make it part of your bedroom travel decor! But it’s almost overwhelming how many ideas are out there. Here are four of my favorite … and all very different.

First up is a nautical table lamp that lulls you off to the beach. It’s perfect for minimalist bedroom decor, with muted colors and only the winding rope to take you away. But if you’d rather have a place to keep all the sand and shells you brought back, this fillable glass lamp might be perfect.

For travel decor that whisks you off to Paris, you have to love this Eiffel Tower lamp ! It’s 14” with a neutral shade, so all eyes are on the tower. And if you’d rather be whisked off to Turkey, take a look at this beautiful Turkish mosaic lamp . Its elegant swan neck and multi-color pattern are SO pretty.

Have a lamp you love but want to change up the shade? It’s an easy idea to bring your love of travel to your bedroom decor!

They’re stunning at first sight, and perfect if you love the flower gardens of European palaces. But if you look closer, you’ll see fantastical creatures, too! More fabulous options are the designer shades from Blue Crocus Textiles. Choose from a great variety of scenes, sizes and metallic interior. Lampshades are lined with a tested and approved heat-safe PVC backing material. I love the watercolor look of this hillside and similar wilderness scenes. But you can also choose from more defined art pieces, too.

My favorite for bedroom travel decor is the cherry blossom Japanese lanterns. Aren’t they lovely?! Choose between battery and plug-in options, and various lengths.

For super minimalist travel-inspired bedroom decor ideas, take a look at these pretty night lights. Here’s a mountain scene night light from Teardrop Glass Shop on Etsy, made from glass and wood. It’s LED with a dusk and dawn sensor, so it automatically turns on as it gets dark. Perfect for those who love the outdoors!

6 Clever Travel-Inspired Home Decor Ideas from a Design Pro

As an interior designer, there are few things that make me cringe harder than a tacky travel souvenir. On the other hand, as a passionate traveler, I understand the burning desire to buy said tacky travel souvenir.

With a bit of pre-trip planning, some careful shopping during your explorations, and an afternoon at the craft table, you can have travel souvenirs that you will be proud to display. Here I round up my favorite travel inspired décor tips for every budget and every level of crafting ability.

I’ve always had a passion — borderline obsession — for studying maps. I’m that girl with a collection of every cheesy tourist map from all of my getaways, though they are stashed away in a box somewhere. These brightly colored, cartoony maps definitely do not make for good interior design.

Luckily there are countless ways to decorate with maps that can add sophistication to your space while holding onto the memories of that incredible getaway!

#1: United States of Us

I fell in love with this idea the moment I saw it. It’s super personal and the best part is that you don’t have to spend money on cheap trinkets that you really don’t like much anyway.

Craftiness Required: Medium. You need to be confidant in your X-Acto knife abilities!

Cost: Low. Just the cost of a simple map, some foam core, push pins, and glue.

#2: Vintage Flair

Nothing says sophisticated design like a vintage map of a world famous city like London, Paris, or New York. It’s such a popular trend right now that even non-travelers are getting on board. So how do you personalize a trend? By channeling the OCD traveler in you and mapping your route of course!

At the end of your trip, you’ll have a fully personalized vintage map and a perfect way to remember all of your stops from a jammed packed vacation. You can even take this one step further and go over your mapped-out route with pins and string.

How To: The minute you land in your destination (or if you are a super planner, before you ever leave home), buy a vintage style map of the city. From there just start marking your adventures right on the map, including the streets you explore and restaurants you discover.

Craftiness Required: Low. You just need the ability to trace some lines!

Cost: Low. You probably already have a marker, pins, and string hanging around. It’s just a matter of finding the right map.

Travel Trunks

This is a design trend that’s here to stay and for good reason! A vintage travel trunk adds tons of character and interest to your space. We’ve all seen the classic travel trunk as a coffee table, but thanks to inspiration from the web, people are getting very creative with ways to use and display their vintage luggage.

#3: Suitcase Shelves

Not everyone collects luggage *while* traveling, but it can be a fun item to hunt for during a weekend road trip. I’m lucky enough to live in New England where there are as many antique shops as there are Dunkin Donuts. Short trips usually mean your car isn’t packed to the brim with your actual luggage so you probably have the room to bring home a vintage suitcase or two.

Stacked suitcases as an entry table is a clever idea, but why not turn your thrift shop find into an unusual, and stylish, display shelf!

How To: Upcycle That has a complete tutorial .

Craftiness Required: High. Not everyone is confident using a table saw, so don’t be afraid to ask for help on this one!

Cost: Moderate. I’ve seen vintage luggage from as low as $30 to as high as $300 per piece. Look for sturdy pieces over “pretty” pieces. The bumps and dings are what add interest (and bring the cost way down!)

Here is where I also admit to being a lover of really cheesy postcards. Yes, I break all of my own souvenir rules. I think something just happens to our brains when we go away and every tourist trap tchotchke suddenly seems like a great find.

Lucky for me (and you!), bad postcards can be a great find, if you know what to do with them once you get home.

#4: Message in a Bottle

These memory jars are great for a lot of reasons: they are inexpensive, they make beautiful personalized displays, and best of all, they are family-friendly. If you have children they will love hunting for souvenirs to add to the jar.

This is also your chance to actually go ahead and buy that really terrible travel trinket. In this case, the cheesier the better!

How To: On the back of the postcard, write a few notes about the dates of your trip, the sights you saw, the food you tasted, etc. Place that in the back of a large mason jar and go to town filling it with items from your trip: sand, pine cones, rocks, ticket stubs, whatever! Best way to display them: on a travel trunk shelf of course!

Craftiness Required: None! This is an incredibly easy, family-friendly project that anyone can do.

Cost: Low. You just need a mason jar, a cheap postcard, and one or two standard souvenirs; the rest of the jar can be filled with “found” items from your getaway.

#5: Postcard Art Gallery

Here’s yet another super simple yet clever idea for decorating with all of those really terrible postcards you’ve collected over the years. Turn them into a stylish mini art gallery.

This idea is great because it can fit any décor. From the upscale style, with framed, carefully hung postcard art …

… to the casual, fun style of a string and clothespin display:

… you can incorporate those otherwise terrible postcards into your space in a way that stands out, but for all the right reasons.

How To: For any art gallery display, I recommend laying it all out first. Arrange all of the pieces on the floor the way you want them on the wall. This way you can figure out how it will look before you begin putting holes in the wall!

You should do this even if you’re going for the string and clothespin display. It will provide a good sense of how things should be laid out and how many rows of string you will need.

Craftiness Required: Low. I think everyone knows how to hang a picture, right?

Cost: Low to Medium. Postcards are great because they are super cheap! The big cost lies in the frames (if you choose to go that route). Best bet: thrifted frames, they are trendy and will keep the cost way down.

DIY Furniture

#6: coffee table book table.

When I travel to an exotic location, I want a million pictures to remember all of the incredible sites I’ve seen. However, a photographer I am not. This is where a coffee table book comes in! Beautifully laid out, with shots that I’d never be able to get on my own, they are a wonderful way to recall the amazing sights you visited on your trip.

The problem arises when you go on countless adventures and your coffee table quickly becomes overcrowded. So why not turn your books into the table? Stacking books to create a side table is quickly catching on as a clever way to display books that are special to you, but that you won’t be looking through on a daily basis.

How To: You don’t really need a tutorial on this one, so I’ll just give a helpful design tip: Keep in mind the colors of the jackets. Don’t place too many similar colors together as this creates a block of color that will visually distract from the overall look.

Craftiness Required: None. Seriously, it’s just a stack of books.

Cost: Probably high (coffee table books aren’t cheap!). But if it’s what you like to collect anyway, you might as well have a fun way to display them!

20 Travel Classroom Theme Ideas

Show them the world from your classroom.

There’s nothing like a travel classroom theme to help inspire curiosity, foster an explorer’s mindset, and give your kids a little global perspective—even if many of your students aren’t yet travelers themselves. (Emphasis on the  yet .)

1. Use your classroom door to let students know they’re taking an adventure.

You can show students your travel theme first thing with artful door décor. The Now Boarding message will let students know they are taking an adventure when they enter your classroom. 

2. Make map art.

An old map can get new life as travel-themed art. Add inspiring words or one of these cool quotes curated from EF Tours about travel, using die-cut letters or permanent markers. 

3. Call your homework assignment boards road maps.

On your designated whiteboard, chalkboard, or bulletin board areas that show the week’s assignments, a Weekly Roadmap sign cleverly continues your travel theme.

4. Put up an interactive postcard display.

Postcards from your own travels can do double duty as art and provide teaching moments about international destinations. Invite your students to bring in their own family postcards to add to the display.

5. Use vintage luggage for book displays.

Old luggage from your parents, grandparents, or a thrift store makes for clever and cute storage for paperbacks. It’s a travel-themed take on the book bin and allows titles to be easily seen by students. 

6.  Frame geography-themed board games. 

History and social studies teachers are known for sharing their love of Risk! and other world affairs-themed board games with their students. If you have old games that are missing pieces, or pick them up cheaply at thrift stores, display the boards’ cool artwork of the  seven continents on your walls. 7. Drive home travel with a road trip themed display table.

Grab some black paper and all the books you can find about road trips, domestic travel and transportation. Add an iconic green and white road sign, and your students will be transported during their library or classroom visits.

8.  Give travel books an aspirational display.

Another awesome book display idea. This one places books about travel or set in far off lands front and center for reading ideas, easy borrowing and decoration, too. Be sure to subscribe (for free!) to the EF Journal and feature in your travel section.  

9. Brand your lost and found area the baggage claim.

All it takes is simple signage and suitcase clip art printed on labels to brand your coat closet or bag hook area baggage claim. 

10. Turn a bulletin board into a flight information display “screen.”

This is a super idea for that random bulletin board you never know how to fill. Transform it into a flight- or train-information screen with black paper and white or green lettering. Feature cities you’re covering in your curriculum. Your creativity is sure to bump you to first class in the classroom-theme department.

11. Adopt a favorite country as your overall theme …  

Rather that focusing on general travel, or international or domestic locations, why not choose a particular country? We love this Spanish teacher’s homage to Mexico! 

12. … or a particular historic period. 

Art teacher Cassie Stephens adopts a different destination classroom theme each year. For her ancient Egypt theme, she sponge-stamped dollar store straw mats and painted her windows. During the year she incorporated ancient Egyptian techniques and history into her students’ art lessons.

13. Jazz up a neutral palette with colorful flags.

If in years past you stuck to a neutral theme, such as black and white or beige and brown, just add colorful international or U.S. state flags for some pops of color. 

14. Study world flags and then invite students to design their own flags.

You can also offer a lesson on the flags of different countries by inviting students to research flag designs. After they learn about what the colors and symbols represent, invite them to create their own flags that symbolize their own lives and origins. Then all you have to do is display the students’ work. Don’t you love it when assignments become classroom art?

15. Add an international skyline display to a frame for a “window” into another land. 

A large picture frame or unused window can reveal a skyline to another land. Crafty teacher Gennai Henning of Bungalow 327 asked her art teacher colleague to draw the Paris skyline so her students would feel like they were really there. Wow! You could also create a group project with your students to recreate or create a skyline, or you could hang a panoramic photograph poster. 

16. Use a map to showcase the settings of books your students will read in the coming year.

Make your classroom feel like a cosmopolitan hotel and teach your students about time zones with a display of multiple clocks. Set each clock to a different local time in the world or within your country and label the time zones. 

19. Add an oversized wall map to an empty wall.

20. Inspire your students with examples of global good.

Add images of historical or current global activists to a bulletin board map display. You will inspire your own students to become good global citizens and make the world a better place.
