M1 motorway

Two lanes of the M1 in Derbyshire remain closed on Wednesday morning after an oil tanker burst into flames on Tuesday.

An additional section of the motorway in Leicestershire has been shut in both directions due to a serious crash.

National Highways said diversion routes were in operation, with the stretch of road expected to reopen later this morning.

Where is the M1 closed?

Emergency services were called to the southbound carriageway between junctions 29 and 28 , near Tibshelf services, at around 10.35am on Tuesday to respond to a lorry fire, shutting this section of the motorway in both directions.

The northbound side reopened at 6.40pm on Tuesday, and two of the four southbound lanes reopened on Wednesday morning.

Emergency resurfacing work is being carried out on the other two lanes, which are expected to reopen later this morning.

A spokesperson for the East Midlands division of National Highways said: “Restrictions are expected to remain in place until mid morning, thank you for your patience.”

The motorway has also been closed in both directions between junction 20 and 21 due to a serious crash, leading to major queues, with delays of 50 minutes on approach to the affected area.

National Highways is advising peopletravelling northbound are advised to follow the Hollow Square diversion symbol on road signs:

  • Exit the M1 northbound at J20 and take the first exist (west) onto the A4303.
  • Continue along the A4303 to the A4303/A426 Lutterworth Road/Rugby Road roundabout and then take the second exit from the roundabout.

Bank holiday travel advice

The M1 closures come ahead of what is expected to be a busy bank holiday weekend for the motorway.

A survey commissioned by the RAC suggested that around 14.4 million leisure trips by car are planned for between Friday and Monday, which is the last bank holiday in England, Wales and Northern Ireland until Christmas Day.

Transport analysis company Inrix said the most congested motorway stretches on Friday are likely to include the M1 northbound between junctions 12 and 16, the M25 clockwise between junctions four and one, and the M4 eastbound from junctions 29 to 24.

Pressure on the roads will be increased further on Saturday when train services will be disrupted, due to thousands of members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT) at 14 train operators striking in the long-running dispute over pay, jobs and conditions.

Inrix advised drivers to avoid major roads between 10am and 7pm on Friday, between 10am and 3pm on Saturday and Sunday, and between 10am and 4pm on Monday.

HELP! Please sign our petition to reinstate the live CCTV traffic camera feeds for the M1

As most of you will have already seen, back in December, National Highways, the government body who control and operate the CCTV cameras on the M1 (and the rest of England) restricted access to their feeds, freezing the images on that date and not allowing third parties like us to give you the access to the latest traffic images you previously enjoyed.

We've been working hard to get this access restored but have unfortunately met with nothing but bureaucratic red tape and a response of "no, because we said so" from National Highways.

Road users in Scotland and Wales don't have this problem; their government bodies put the needs of the public first and have created ways for third-party providers to build fast, helpful services, now used by thousands of UK motorists daily.

The more people that sign, the quicker this can be resolved, so please share!

We have been told by National Highways that the camera feeds for the M1 will be reinstated shortly.

If the images are not updating, please check back later.

Firefighters cut patients out of crash after parked police car hit at high speeds on M1

An aerial view of a crash.

Four people, including two children and a police officer, have been taken to hospital after a ute hit a parked police car on the southbound side of the M1 motorway on the Gold Coast.

Emergency Services were called to the scene at 1.20pm Friday and two southbound lanes near Helensvale have been closed.

A police car involved in a crash on the M1 near Helensvale.

Firefighters used machinery to free a trapped 55-year-old senior constable from his highway patrol car as well as the 54-year-old female ute driver.

The officer was treated for chest and abdominal injuries.

A 9-year-old girl and one-year-old child — believed to be the ute driver's grandchildren — were also treated for face and leg injuries.

A Queensland Ambulance spokesperson said all four patients were taken to Gold Coast University Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Acting Inspector Mitch Gray said the officer was stopped and monitoring traffic at the time of the crash.

He said the ute was believed to have been travelling at at least 110kph when the crash took place and the police car continued to roll another 100m down the road.

The speed limit on the M1 is 110kph.

A uniformed police officer stands under and overpass alongside a highway.

"[The officer] has been communicating with us the whole time and we have spoken with his wife and family," Acting Inspector Gray said.

"He is in good spirits considering the significance of the injury and at this stage we expect him to make a full recovery over time.

"We'll rally around him and his family and we will certainly give him all the support he needs to get him back to work and some normality once he's recovered."

Acting Inspector Gray praised the efforts of an off-duty police officer and a truck driver who stopped to help.

The off-duty police officer pulled over after witnessing the crash and his car was hit from behind at low speed by the police car rolling forward from the initial impact.

Southbound traffic is still experiencing delays in the area and the Forensic Crash Unit is investigating.

Tens of thousands of rock fans are expected to attend the festival at Donington Park, which runs from Friday, June 14, until Sunday, June 16. In the latest update, issued at 6.30pm on Wednesday, organisers said there was "lots of space in all car parks".

"Be sure to follow our travel guide (previously sent to all ticket holders) and event signage to go to the right car park for your ticket type," its website reads. Those heading to the festival are advised to follow event signage rather than rely on satellite navigation systems, and not assume the route or entry point they have used in previous years will be the same.

There are more parking fields than in previous years with an increased number of access gates and people will be able to scan a QR code on their parking passes for live updates on car park availability and capacity.

The pickup and drop-off points have also changed and are not in the same area as the camping entrances to reduce congestion. Queens of the Stone Age, Fall Out Boy and Avenged Sevenfold are headlining this year's festival and around 75,000 people are expected to attend.

New plans in place to help prevent repeat of last year's traffic chaos

A new plan is in place this year is in a bid to avoid last year’s traffic chaos for the festival which saw some queuing for up to 15 hours in what was labelled “unprecedented” congestion.

Investigations into the chaos, which saw long queues on the M1, A42, A453 and A50, ultimately found that Download Festival had not breached traffic or noise licence conditions. However, Live Nation, the festival’s organisers, said its plans had been overhauled for this year in a bid to avoid similar issues.

M1 traffic flowing nicely

According to Google Traffic, there is no congestion in place on the M1 this morning. Delays are possible, however, in both directions from J24 A453 Ashby Road to J25 A52 Brian Clough Way.

This is due to roadworks that will be finalised on November 14.

Who's headlining Download this year?

A star-studded lineup is set to take to the stage this weekend, with Queens of the Stone Age, Fall Out Boy and Avenged Sevenfold headlining from Friday-Sunday.

British duo Royal Blood will also perform on the main stage this Friday.

'Rollin' singers Limp Bizkit are also set to perform on Sunday.

More than 1,000 campers from a park near the fire have been evacuated.

The blaze started just before 2 p.m. PT on Saturday in the area. Gusty winds fanned the flames, which quickly spread.

At least two structures have been damaged by the fire, Cal Fire said. No injuries have been reported.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation Sunday. More than 300 firefighters, including air tanker crews, are battling the fire from the ground and sky, authorities said.

The 5 states with the worst, best traveler's airplane etiquette

travel news on the m1

Sitting next to someone with poor airplane etiquette can easily ruin your flight, and the U.S. state you’re flying out of may determine that.

From the seat in front of you reclining into your lap to a passenger who hogs both armrests — and isn’t in the middle seat — there are a number of behaviors that can bother your fellow travelers. In a recent report by Solitaire Bliss, 78% of the 2,002 Americans surveyed in April said they feel air travel etiquette has worsened over the past few years.

The participants cited the most common inconsiderate behaviors in airports and airplanes they’ve seen being people reclining seats without asking, using phones loudly in the terminal, and placing bags on terminal seats.

The survey asked what bad behaviors people have seen and if they are guilty of committing these air travel offenses — and many admitted they do. With survey respondents coming from every U.S. state, the report determined the states with the most polite and inconsiderate fliers. (Yes, these are blanket statements, and both good and bad fliers are everywhere.) The states were ranked on a scale of 0 to 100, with higher scores indicating a greater tendency among travelers from that state to have poor air travel etiquette.

Don't be that passenger. Expert tips to make your flight more pleasant for everyone

“With the summer travel season here, we’ll be seeing an influx of stories on the media circuit about poor passenger behavior and airline issues,” Assaf Cohen, founder of Solitaire Bliss, said in an email statement to USA TODAY. “Along with common behaviors like taking up a seat in the terminal using a bag, or reclining a seat without asking, one in eight passengers report having seen a physical altercation.”

Read below to find the top five states with the best and worst travel etiquette.

States with the worst travel etiquette

3. Virginia

2. Illinois

With the highest score of 94.29, Iowa’s survey respondents were the most guilty of poor travel etiquette, like putting their bags on the terminal seats and passing gas on the plane. Virginia’s top bad habits when flying included placing their luggage on the terminal seats, not putting their phones on airplane mode, and reclining their seats without asking. In Illinois, one in four residents admitted they ignore the seatbelt sign when flying.

States with the best travel etiquette

2. Wisconsin

1. Arkansas

Call it “Southern hospitality” or “Midwest nice,” but the states that reported the least rude air travel behaviors were along the South and Midwest. Arkansas stole the top spot for having the most well-mannered passengers — or at least those who did not admit to their offenses.

The Joys and Perils of Return Travel

In a faded photo with colors, dissolved birds fly distantly overhead below billowing clouds.

By Pamela Paul

Opinion Columnist

Last week I went to Venice, where I had been invited to participate in an arts conference. It was the first time I’d been back in 32 years.

Venice is one of those bucket-list places, a city so extraordinary, you want to see it at least once. But unless you’re the kind of fabulous person who regularly attends the Biennale or the Film Festival or owns a palazzo, it may not be somewhere you return. It’s small, it’s expensive, it’s overcrowded, and it’s sinking.

Then again, it’s Venice.

For those of us who love to travel, the question of whether to revisit a place is a repeated conundrum. You go back to some places to see certain people or to visit in the company of new people. You return to see what you missed or to see it again. Whichever way, return travel is as much an act of time travel as it is a geographic one.

You’ve changed, and the place has changed. You’re visiting not simply a place but a place captured in a moment in time — one that exists for you in the past and for a past version of yourself.

Travel writers often wrestle with this. “By day I wander the alleys and monuments that had so fascinated me as a young man,” the legendary travel writer Colin Thubron wrote on returning to Damascus in 2017 after 50 years. “Sometimes I find myself gazing through his eyes, remembering the youthful enchantment of entering an old mosque or a sultan’s tomb.”

For me, the simple idea that 32 years could pass since I first went to Venice seemed impossible. Surely my adult life couldn’t contain intervals that long.

I first went to Venice toward the end of a month traveling solo in Italy after a junior year abroad. Even during that “Let’s Go” time when guidebooks still boasted of Europe on $35 a day, Venice was prohibitively expensive. My only realistic option in Venice was a youth hostel housed in a former nunnery on an outlying island.

It rained nearly every day in Italy that June, enough to merit a mention in The International Herald Tribune. Tourism was suffering, and even Venice had largely emptied out. I, too, felt sodden. In Venice, I hadn’t the time or the money to enter the famed basilica, which I admired under a flimsy umbrella from rain-drenched San Marco Square.

I don’t remember much about that visit. When I dug my photo album out from a storage crate before leaving this time, my pictures of Venice were dim and unfamiliar.

Today, of course, our travels revisit us regularly — our photos, more plentiful, are right here on our phones, served to us algorithmically through the iPhone’s Memories function. We watch friends’ and strangers’ Instagram stories of the same locations. It’s become harder to avoid losing your memories altogether.

Over 32 years, new information about Venice had filtered my own. I’d read the travel writer Jan Morris’s immortal 1960 book on Venice and that of the Venice devotee Judith Martin , which I reviewed for The Times Book Review. I saw new movies, from “ The Wings of the Dove ” to “ The Italian Job ” remake, that cast Venice as a place of tragic beauty and elusive wealth. I watched older ones like 1973’s “ Don’t Look Now ,” in which a dilapidated, almost corroded Venice serves as a backdrop to menace and terror, and Paul Schrader’s 1990 “ The Comfort of Strangers .”

It became hard to reconcile my faded version of Venice with all the data I’d absorbed since. Venice, the headlines told me, was flooded ; Venice was sinking ; Venice was possibly saved . The pandemic crushed and then perhaps rescued Venice’s tourism industry . The city had become so overcrowded , it had started charging entry fees yet was conflicted about being treated like a museum rather than a living city.

All this led to a certain amount of trepidation. Had Venice become overly commercialized, ruined in the interim?

Every traveler has been told on one journey or another, “You should have been here 30 years ago.” You missed Angkor Wat when it was largely abandoned. Beijing when the sky was still blue. Iceland before Instagram.

It can seem that you’ve always arrived too late. And if you return, you can’t help but draw comparisons between the way you once saw it and what lies before you now.

Or perhaps not. Late in life, Morris, who died in 2020 at age 94, said she couldn’t remember her first sight of Venice, a city she revisited enough times to fill four books and, in her words, “a couple of million” articles. But Morris said of Venice, “In my experience, anyway, it remains a place of unpoisoned and unmechanized welcome. But there, it’s all in the mind.”

So how did the Venice in my mind compare with the city I returned to?

Venice was not at all what I’d remembered. Nor was it what I feared. The city, it turns out, has not been ruined. It was certainly crowded, but its crowds were tolerable, perhaps because they circulated along the same well-trod paths. And the city compensated, thrumming with contemporary art as much as with its preserved history, its palazzos turned into private museums boasting exhibits by artists like Pierre Huyghe and Christoph Büchel . My 17-year-old son, freshly graduated from high school, came along for the trip, and I got to look on as he saw Venice for the very first time. I, too, felt as if I saw it for the first time. If I never end up returning, I’ll have left with no regrets. This time, I’ll remember it well.
