2024 Travel Award Program Flyer (Overview)

Congratulations to the 2023 Travel Award Class!

The American College of Neuropsychopharmacology (ACNP) annually selects distinguished young scientists in the field of neuropsychopharmacology to be part of our travel award program. These travel awards offer an opportunity to attend an outstanding scientific program in clinical and basic research on brain-behavior-drug interactions, become aware of the most recent, and often unpublished, advances in psychopharmacology, and meet and interact with internationally distinguished researchers and scientists.

As part of our Travel Award Program, we recognize the ACNP Young Investigator Memorial Travel Awards, established in 1997 to commemorate the life and work of deceased College members who made contributions to the field of neuropsychopharmacology. These were awarded 1998-2005 in the names of; Louis S. Lasagna (1923-2003), Marian Weinbaum Fischman (1939-2001), Arnold J. Friedhoff (1923-2001), Leo Hollister (1920-2000), Seymour Kety (1915-2000), Heinz E. Lehmann (1911-1999), Jerry Sepinwall (1940-1998), Menek Goldstein (1926-1997), Daniel X. Freedman (1921-1993), and Gerald L. Kierman (1928-1992). ACNP continues to honor their contributions, made both during their lives and in memoriam through the support of young investigators, many of whom have gone on to become ACNP Members and make significant contributions to the field.

APPLICATION PERIOD

The College is no longer accepting applications for travel awards. The deadline for application submission was April 18, 2024  by 5:00pm Central Time.

ELIGIBILITY

Any scientist worldwide is eligible to apply for a travel award. All candidates must be eligible in one of the three applicant tiers AND meet training/post training limits as described below. The post training limit (5 years past final training) can be extended by up to 2 years for significant life events and/or career advancement delays due to the COVID pandemic. In this case, please provide background information in the application about the circumstances for the committee to consider (e.g., birth/adoption of a child, childcare, eldercare, illness or disability of applicant, care for an ill/disabled family member, personal or family tragedy, COVID-related lab shut-down, etc.). ACNP members (all categories of membership) and previous Travel Awardees are not eligible to apply.

Candidates from historically excluded groups in science and medicine are highly encouraged to apply. ACNP defines historically excluded groups as Blacks or African Americans, Hispanics or Latinos, American Indians or Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders, and individuals who identify as LGBTQIA2S+.

APPLICANT TIERS

Clinical student level.

Clinical Student Level applicants are defined as those individuals who currently are candidates for a clinician-scientist dual degree (M.D./Ph.D., Pharm.D./Ph.D.), or are in another graduate-level clinical program (M.D., D.O., D.V.M., D.N.P., Psy.D., Clinical Psychology) and are receiving research training. Those individuals who already have earned their graduate degree are ineligible to apply for this student award and should consider applying in the appropriate Junior or Senior level awards. Those working to obtain a non-clinician Ph.D. (without a clinical degree) are ineligible for this award and should apply for the Junior level award.

Junior Level

Junior Level applicants are defined as those individuals who are at or below Assistant Professor (or equivalent level if in a non-academic institution) AND currently engaged in research training, i.e.: non-clinician Ph.D. students, medical residents or fellows, Pharm.D. residents, interns, and post-doctoral fellows. These applicants may be within, but no more than 5 years past their final training. Post training for clinicians (M.D.’s, D.O.’s, Psy.D.’s, D.V.M.’s, D.N.P.’s, Clinical Psychologists) will be counted from the final year of their residency or fellowship. Post training for Pharm.D.’s will be counted from completion of Pharm.D. or residency, if completed. Post training for non-clinician Ph.D.’s will be counted from the last year of postdoctoral fellowship.

Senior Level

Senior Level applicants are defined as those individuals who are at the Assistant Professor level or its equivalent, but not an R01 awardee. Applicants may be no more than 5 years past their final training (postdoctoral fellowship or residency). Any person who is an Associate Professor or has already obtained an R01, is considered too senior to apply for a travel award. Post training for clinicians (M.D.’s, D.O.’s, Psy.D.’s, D.V.M.’s, D.N.P.’s, clinical program Ph.D.’s) will be counted from the final year of their residency or fellowship. Post training for Pharm.D.’s will be counted from completion of Pharm.D. or residency, if completed. Post training for non-clinician Ph.D.’s will be counted from the last year of postdoctoral fellowship.

Meet the Team

Hello Travel Industry Colleagues!

It’s that time of year again - when the UK’s travel companies put themselves forward for a chance to win one of the 2024 British Travel Awards accolades across a whole range of categories. Hopefully you have all had a good “peaks” booking period and things are looking good for your businesses going forward.

We had amazing feedback from everyone who took part in the awards competition and who joined us at the BTAs 2023 gala event in November - so we are of course looking to repeat and build on that success again for this year. To remind you, last year over 1.6 million votes were cast by consumers across the BTA categories - a record number.

This year, all the usual categories are in place for you to enter for 2024, and once again there will be no need for you to complete criteria forms or submissions - your entry will be verified by the BTA team to ensure you are in the right category(s) and then, once voting begins you will be sent your unique vote pop-up link to enable you to lobby your own customers for votes. The winners are decided purely on the number of verified votes they achieve from happy customers.

The nomination registration window will be open until 10 May and you are invited to enter as many categories as you wish. In many of the categories you can enter as a small, medium or large size company - just ensure you declare your company size when entering according to the criteria set for each of these size defined categories.

In the Trade & Media Newszone you will be able to see the declared sizes of all other companies who have entered – and of course who has entered into each category. If you feel a mistake has been made, you have until 10 May to make your views heard so we can investigate and amend if necessary.

Once companies are confirmed as entrants (follow us on Twitter for trade updates on confirmed entrants @BritTravAwrds) - they will receive:

Entering the BTAs is easy and full details can be found under the Nomination Application tab of this website. The cost of entry remains at last year’s price of £250 plus VAT per brand, per category entry which of course includes your BTA nominee click through software to lobby for votes.

Our database of subscribed consumer voters (over 400k) will be contacted directly to encourage them to have their say once voting begins - and to further encourage consumers to vote for their favourite companies, we will once again be partnering with Reach plc on editorial, print and digital features and display ads to promote the BTAs, the nominees - and of course our sponsors and partners. Millions of potential voters will be reached throughout the voting period.

Along with the travel editors at The Mirror, Star, The Express and the larger regional titles of our partners at Reach plc, we will be offering consumers free entry into the voters’ prize draw to thank them for taking the time to vote across the BTA categories - and if you’d like to be involved in this initiative, please do drop me a line and I’ll send you the details.

We’ll update you soon with our new plans and details for this year’s gala event when the results of the BTAs will be announced.

Kindest regards,

Lorraine and the BTA Team

About

EU Business News is thrilled to unveil the much-anticipated European Travel Awards 2024, now in its illustrious third year! This distinguished awards programme, celebrated for spotlighting the pinnacle of innovation, excellence, and dedication within the European travel industry, is dedicated to acknowledging the transformative efforts and remarkable achievements of businesses revolutionising the travel sector. From delivering unparalleled experiences and pioneering advanced technology to advocating for sustainability and bespoke services, these awards are set to honour those who redefine industry standards.

The European Travel Awards 2024 casts a wide net, welcoming a diverse range of participants integral to the vibrancy of Europe’s travel ecosystem, including hotels, travel agencies, tour operators, travel tech innovators, and transportation providers. Whether you are a boutique hotel known for its unique cultural offerings, a technology startup revolutionising the booking process, or a tour operator with a focus on eco-friendly adventures, this platform offers a prestigious opportunity to showcase your contributions to a global audience.

In the year 2024, the travel sector is distinguished by its integration of innovative technology, steadfast commitment to sustainability, and the crafting of personalised experiences. Advances such as automated bookings and biometric technology are simplifying travel, while the fusion of business with leisure, known as “bleisure,” meets the contemporary traveller’s need for comprehensive trip experiences. The emphasis on sustainability is stronger than ever, urging a shift towards greener travel alternatives and the exploration of less traditional travel periods. Personalised experiences are in high demand, highlighting the importance of authentic engagement with destinations. The industry’s innovative responses, including travel subscriptions and digital passports, underscore a dedication to adaptability, environmental stewardship, and the creation of uniquely tailored travel experiences.

EU Business News aims to illuminate the pathbreakers adeptly navigating these dynamic shifts. By spotlighting excellence, innovation, and green initiatives, the awards not only commend the leaders of today but also inspire the broader sector to pursue excellence and adopt practices that positively impact the worldwide travel community.

The awards process for the European Travel Awards 2024 is simple. EU Business News welcomes external nominations from anyone who wishes to put forward a deserving business or individual for consideration. Alternatively, EU Business News also conducts its own independent research to identify potential candidates for recognition. The research team uses various sources of publicly available information to evaluate the performance and reputation of each nominee. The research team then presents its findings to our judging panel, who make the final decision on who will be successful in this year’s awards.

Participation in the European Travel Awards 2024 not only signifies industry recognition but also significantly amplifies brand presence. Awardees enjoy enhanced visibility and credibility, positioning them as preferred choices among environmentally and ethically conscious consumers. This accolade acts as a powerful promotional lever, bolstering brand awareness and attracting potential clients, partnerships, and talent.

The benefits of taking part in the European Travel Awards 2024 are numerous. If you are successful in this year’s programme, you will be presented to our circulation of 58,000 and promoted on our official website for a minimum of 12 months.

In addition, our awardees are welcome to choose from our range of competitively priced promotional opportunities to increase exposure of the good news!

The European Travel Awards 2024 offers an unmatched platform to honour and recognize the entities propelling the European travel industry forward. Through celebrating the forefront of innovation, sustainability, and customer service, EU Business News champions a culture of excellence. Join us in heralding Europe’s travel industry’s finest by submitting your nomination today and securing the recognition you deserve!

If you are interested in taking part in the European Travel Awards 2024, or nominating someone else for consideration, then please complete the voting form found above. Do not miss this chance to celebrate your success with EU Business News!

Methodology

All nominees are researched

The EU Business News team work hard in identifying great businesses, driving many of the nominations themselves. We also encourage external nominations from the subscribers of the magazine, online visitors, social media followers, clients and wider circulation. Nominating parties are invited to put forward either their own business or third-party companies whom they hold in high regard.

Creating the shortlist

All nominees are formally requested to accept their nomination. Should any firm or individual decline at this point, they are simply taken out of the running. Those who formally accept are given the opportunity to submit additional supporting information to cement their nomination. Although there is no obligation to complete and supply material, we have found that many nominees value this stage, in the process, as much as our research team do.

Evaluating the shortlisted nominees

Our dedicated research team will assess all information presented to them. The team gather information independently from a variety of publicly accessible sources, which are assessed alongside any material supplied by a nominating party or the nominee themselves. The research team casts their final judgment, based on various criteria such as: business performance, longevity, business growth (either sustained or rapid), any significant innovations or feedback from stakeholders.

How winners are determined

Once winners are selected, they are personally notified before any public announcement is made, allowing time for any communications throughout the wider business and the coordination of marketing strategies. Unfortunately, not everyone can be a winner; however, all who take part are encouraged to come back next year. Once the press embargo is lifted, details of our award winners will be made public via the website, award winners’ magazine and subscriber newsletter.

Sharing the exciting news

We are prepared to offer a range of promotional packages and items to winners of a EU Business News award, which vary from inclusion in the free-of-charge winners’ directory, to trophies, content in our magazine and on our website.

We encourage all winners to publicly announce their win independently in order to gain maximum exposure for their win. Announcements via company websites, social media, via publicly released press releases, and through local and national press are all great ways of maximising the exposure which can be gained from such a great achievement. If you have need of further advice, on how to publicise your win, please feel free to get in touch. We are happy to assist our clients with their needs.

Team Photo

The Nomination Team can assist with answering any queries that you have regarding a nomination, or the process involved in taking part in one of our award programmes.

Please get in touch with us via email or over the phone if you have any questions - we are happy to help!

Frequently Asked

When did LUXlife launch?

Today, LUXlife is one of AI Global Media’s most popular standalone publications but it launched as a bi-product of the luxury lifestyle sections from two of our flagship brands, Acquisition International & Wealth & Finance. In this respect, we’ve been active in the Lifestyle Sector since 2010; however, as demand for this type of coverage increased, we made the decision, in 2015, to separate the content and launch LUXlife, as an independent brand.

Who nominated me?

A large part of the nomination process is driven by LUXlife, we spend a great deal of time identifying potentially suitable candidates within their appropriate markets. A publisher-cast nomination doesn’t hold any more weight than a self, or third-party nomination, they all filter through to the research stage in the same manner. If you didn’t self-nominate the nomination will have come from either a third-party vote via our online voting form or, by us the publisher. We run the nomination process via our website entirely anonymously, prohibiting us to provide specific details. Tried and tested over the years, response rates are always higher this way. As we operate in this manner, we run a very rigorous filtering system and do not directly link the number of votes received with success. We store encrypted versions of the IP address associated with the nomination, allowing us to track unusual behaviour.

I’ve accepted the nomination, what happens next?

Once a nomination is accepted, the organisation will be moved on to our shortlist. Shortlisted parties are encouraged to submit supporting materials via our optional questionnaire. This is the perfect opportunity to put forward any specifics you’d like our judging panel to take into consideration before they undertake extensive research for up to 8 weeks.

What are the costs?

There are no obligatory costs in accepting a nomination or winning a LUXlife award. In fact, to demonstrate our commitment to this, all our winners are offered a free of charge promotional package. Our company policy will always remain, regardless of budget, our clients should always be able to leverage the value of the award and our seal of approval. We offer a variety of promotional opportunities to our winners. as we have an extensive network and we know, more than anyone, the wider business benefits from promoting industry awards. It’s important to highlight, all conversations pertaining commercial add-ons are conducted after winners are announced, so there is no possibility an organisation can influence any internal decisions, based on their appetite to spend on marketing; this remains our utmost concern.

Who makes the final decision?

We have an entirely unbiased internal panel. It consists of an international, collective of individuals, with backgrounds from a myriad of fields, such as business, economy, politics, media, journalism, history and education. The panel is led by a veteran academic leader with international pedagogic and coaching experience who is well versed in research, fact-checking and mediation; allowing the panel to operate with efficacy and dependability.

When’s the ceremony?

We do not gather our winners together to present the news. We’re a little bit too new-media for that! All announcements are made digitally, online and across our network. Hosting events and celebration dinners is an expense we’d rather our clients not entertain. We’d much rather keep the cost of our services and products low, so our winners can choose to spend money on marketing that generates real-world value.

So, what happens if I do win?

You get to select the level of coverage that suits you and we set to work to prepare all the relevant elements in time for our public announcement. Our main coverage takes the form of a digital winner’s magazine, but we also offer physical trophies, certificates and varied online packages offering social media exposure. We have a highly experienced editorial and production department who will guide you through this process and give you full control over your eventual coverage.

Why does your email domain differ from your website domain?

Because we send a large volume of emails, we separate our campaign email sends from our transactional ones. This structure helps to ensure a prompt and thorough response from one of our diligent team members. The sending email address will always be recognisable but please contact us via the address on this page if you have any concerns.

Jakarta wins best booth event award at seoul international travel fair 2024.

JAKARTA, Indonesia , June 19, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- The Jakarta Provincial Government proudly received the prestigious Best Booth Event Award at the 2024 Seoul International Travel Fair (SITF). The award was presented by the Chairman and CEO of the Korean Travel Fair (KOTFA) to Helma Dahlia, Secretary of the Jakarta Tourism and Creative Economy Agency, during the closing ceremony at the CO Exhibition Center in South Korea on Sunday, May 12 .

Helma Dahlia emphasized that Jakarta's participation in SITF 2024 is part of a broader effort to boost international tourist visits to the city. "The Jakarta Provincial Government, in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy, aims to attract between 9.5 to 14.3 million foreign tourists to Indonesia in 2024," she stated.

Sherly Yuliana , Head of the Marketing and Attraction Division, highlighted the significance of SITF 2024 in promoting Jakarta's leisure destinations and strengthening international relations. "This event also positions Jakarta as a prime tourist destination for South Korean travelers," she added.

According to the Jakarta Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), from January to November 2023 , Jakarta welcomed 1,784,359 international visitors. Sherly noted that this influx reflects the tourism sector's recovery post-pandemic and underscores opportunities for developing Jakarta's iconic and culturally rich attractions alongside its modern lifestyle.

In support of these efforts, Indonesia has established direct flights between Hanoi and Jakarta , Ho Chi Minh City and Jakarta , and Ho Chi Minh City and Bali through the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy. "This initiative aims to attract more South Korean tourists to Indonesia via Vietnam ," Sherly explained.

Lucky Wulandari, Head of the Overseas Tourism Marketing Sub Group, mentioned that five curated co-exhibitors from Jakarta participated in SITF 2024. This selection process was conducted in collaboration with the Jakarta Hotel Association (JHA) and the Indonesian Travel Agent Association (ASTINDO). The co-exhibitors included PT Savir Mitra Wisata, 3T Tours Indonesia (PT Sinar Fiesta Indonesia), Xpose Leisure Jakarta, The St Regis Hotel, and Sido Abadi Travelindo.

How ‘The Fargo Effect’ puts actors you’d never expect to see in its villain roles

Two men, dressed alike in cowboy hats, stand at podiums in a scene from "Fargo" Season 5.

When Jon Hamm swapped Don Draper’s sleek suits for a 10-gallon hat to play a wife-beating cowboy in Season 5 of “Fargo,” he became the latest actor to enjoy a hard pivot thanks to the show’s perception-shattering casting practices.

“Fargo” executive producer Warren Littlefield explains writer-director Noah Hawley’s nonformulaic formula that keeps fans on their toes. “‘Fargo’ walks in the shoes of comedy, and also tragedy,” Littlefield says. “When they collide, that’s when you have great ‘Fargo.’”

Starting with its first season in 2014, “Fargo” — based on the Coen brothers’ 1996 movie — enabled actors known for their comedy chops to get serious. Nick Offerman came from “Parks and Recreation” to play it straight on “Fargo,” as did “Cheers”-famous Ted Danson, Brad Garrett of “Everybody Loves Raymond” and Dave Foley (“News Radio,” “Kids in the Hall”), who showed up this year as a smooth lawyer who never gets around to explaining why he wears an eye patch before being shot dead.

Littlefield credits casting director Rachel Tenner with a key role in assembling the show’s quirky ensembles. “Probably the only suggestion the Coen brothers gave Noah and myself was that Rachel did local casting when they made ‘Fargo,’ and ‘She really got us.’ We love Rachel’s sensibility.”

Here’s a look at the backstories behind five actors who have benefited from the “Fargo Effect,” thanks to their stereotype-defying performances.

A man in a cap and heavy coat stands outside looking startled in "Fargo," Season 1.

Martin Freeman (as Lester Nygaard)

A meek insurance salesman from Minnesota, Lester beats his wife to death with a hammer. Emmy nominated.

Previously known for: The U.K. version of “The Office,” as Ricky Gervais’ droll underling Tim and “The Hobbit” trilogy in the role of heroic Bilbo Baggins.

How he got the part: “Lester’s a guy who’s going to be bullied,” Littlefield says. “Martin is small, he has humor and we thought, ‘Wow, people would root for him.’ Then we reveal there’s a monster inside. We had conversations with Martin, and we just clicked. He understood the character and had a wild excitement for it. We were a little worried about the accent but we gave Martin time to work with a voice coach and took the leap.”

Post-“Fargo”: Dramatic roles in “Black Panther,” “Sherlock” and the recent U.K. series “The Responder,” which stars Freeman as an anguished cop.

A man and older woman stand side by side looking serious in "Fargo," Season 2.

Jean Smart (as Floyd Gerhardt)

The cold-hearted crime family matriarch uses her sons as foot soldiers to fight off crime syndicate interlopers. Emmy nominated.

Previously known for: “Designing Women,” playing ditzy office manager Charlene.

How she got the part: “We were very seriously thinking about offering the role to an Academy Award-winning actress but she wouldn’t read,” Littlefield recalls. “Then we hear that Jean Smart wants to come in. You wouldn’t look at Jean’s filmography and say she’s a natural for a crime boss, but this was one of those unexpected surprises you get from our casting process because we looked at the [audition] tape and said, ‘Pretty damn good.’ We were delighted to put an actress out there whom the audience knew but had never seen in this way before.”

Post-“Fargo”: Emmy-nominated dramatic roles in “Mare of Easttown” and “Watchmen,” followed by a return to comedy with two Emmy-winning seasons of “Hacks.”

A balding man in a leather jacket sits in an office in "Fargo," Season 3.

Ewan McGregor (as brothers Ray and Emmit Stussy)

Ray is a balding, pot-bellied parole officer who goes rogue and kills an adversary by dropping an air conditioner on his head. Ray resents his handsome older brother, Emmit, the “parking lot king of Minnesota.”

Previously known for: the “Star Wars” prequel trilogy as young Obi-Wan Kenobi following his breakthrough role as a Scottish heroin addict in “Trainspotting.”

How he got the part: “Ewan’s done tremendous dramatic work, of course, but there’s also a lightness where he’s able to hear the tempo and the rhythms to undercut the drama with comedy,” Littlefield says. “That nimble-ness was very much what Noah responded to. For Ewan, the commitment of spending 2½ hours in prosthetics and makeup [to play Ray] didn’t phase him at all.

Post-“Fargo”: “A Gentleman in Moscow” limited series stars McGregor as a dapper aristocrat confined to a hotel during Russia’s Bolshevik Revolution.

A graying and well-dressed man in "Fargo," Season 4.

Chris Rock (as Loy Cannon)

The ruthless-when-necessary boss of a Kansas City, Mo., criminal outfit in 1950, Loy Cannon leads his men against mafia interlopers.

Previously known for: Comedy specials beginning with his classic stand-up concert “Bring the Pain.”

How he got the part: “Because I’d been sniffing around, I happened to know that Chris Rock is a tremendous fan of ‘Fargo,’ and I think Noah got excited about that possibility as he put the character on paper,” Littlefield recalls. “When we reached out to Chris, he’s like ‘My kids love “Fargo.”’ I’ll have credibility.’ Chris was a moth to a flame. He has an unbelievably well-developed comedy muscle but never broke into that in ‘Fargo.’”

Post-“Fargo”: Rock is reportedly in talks to direct a biopic about the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

A man in a cowboy hat and shearling coat looks into the distance followed by a younger man in "Fargo," Season 5.

Jon Hamm (as Roy Tillman)

Tillman is a vicious, shotgun-toting North Dakota sheriff who’s obsessed with hunting down the battered spouse (Juno Temple) who fled his abuse. SAG Award-nominated. Strong Emmy contender.

Previously known for: “Mad Men,” which earned Hamm an Emmy award for his performance as brooding, womanizing ad man Don Draper.

How he got the part: “Noah had worked with Jon in his movie ‘Lucy in the Sky.’ The moment Noah put Roy Tillman on the page, he said, ‘Wow I think this would be fun to do with Hamm.’ For a lot of people, it was like, ‘Who knew Jon would be such a great heavy?’ When you remember how polished Don Draper was in this slick world of advertising, well, there’s none of that polish in Roy Tillman. Jon enjoyed the sharp edges. One of the first things we did was give him horseback riding lessons in Griffith Park. I still have his cowboy hat in my office.”

Post-“Fargo”: The upcoming “Wilder and Me” features Hamm as actor William Holden.

2024 James Beard Award winner takes over Asheville in four-day tasting tour

A SHEVILLE - Riding high from a victorious win at the prestigious James Beard Foundation Awards ceremony in Chicago, a New Jersey-based bartender-botanist and author has his eyes set on Asheville.

On June 8, Danny Childs accepted a coveted Book Award medal in the category of Beverage with Recipes for his debut book, “Slow Drinks: A Field Guide to Foraging and Fermenting Seasonal Sodas, Botanical Cocktails, Homemade Wines, and More,” with photography by his wife, Katie Childs.

“It was important to us to live up to our standard and represent what we wanted to represent but it certainly wasn’t the easiest path to getting there so it feels extra special,” Danny Childs said.

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

Childs, a trained ethnobotanist, penned the literary work to share the benefits and tips for applying foraged, garden and farm-harvested ingredients in craft beverages.

His approach to “backyard mixology” gained popularity at Farm & Fisherman Tavern where he built the bar program and through his aptly named “Slow Drinks” education and consulting company and involvement in the Slow Food Movement through which he continues to spread the gospel of botanicals to wider audiences.

From June 29-July 2, Childs will bring his beverage repertoire to Asheville in a citywide tour in partnership with Wrong Way River Lodge & Cabins, Gemelli, Chai Pani and Eda Rhyne Distillery.

Four creatively curated programs will present different ways for guests to experience Childs’ original alcoholic and nonalcoholic concoctions.

Amaro Adventure at Wrong Way River Lodge & Cabins

Childs explored South America, studying and working with populations in the Amazon and northern Patagonia and Chile working with shamans, healers and more to learn how to use plants as medicine and for other uses.

He returned to the U.S. to work in agriculture and earn a Ph.D. in ethnobotany that combined with his hospitality background set him on a path to blending nature's local and regional ingredients into handcraft drinks.

Childs, who’s visited family in Asheville over the years, has foraged for items such as sassafras and black walnuts from the Appalachian Mountains, which are featured in his recipes.

“It’s like cooking ― better ingredients make a better plate or better drink,” he said. “To hone into things that are wild often give it unparalleled flavors you just can’t find on the shelves of grocery stores or in your local farmers market.”

On June 29, Amaro Adventure at Wrong Way River Lodge & Cabins from 5-6:30 p.m. will take guests on a foraging trek along the French Broad River Greenway to create “backyard amaro” ― a bittersweet herbal liqueur.

Then, participants will return to Wrong Way’s grounds and meadows, 9 Midnight Drive, to learn to make amaro by the campfire with snacks provided by Newstock Pantry.

The public is invited to join the party from 6-9 p.m. with live music, live fire, food truck bites and drinks available from Wrong Way Canteen.

Amaro Adventure is for adults ages 21 and up and costs $65 per person. Purchase tickets at eventbrite.com .

Slow Drinks Foraged Dinner at Gemelli

Childs said “Slow Drinks” is beginner-friendly yet applicable for experts ― no bartending or foraging experience required ― and features zero-proof recipes and suggested substitutions for cocktails.

“It’s not just about the booze, it’s about making better drinks,” he said.

On June 30, Childs and the chefs and mixologist at the West Asheville Italian eatery Gemelli will collaborate to present a five-course meal with beverage pairings at the Slow Drinks Foraged Dinner from 6-9 p.m. at 70 Westgate Parkway.

Locally foraged ingredients will accent the Appalachian-Italian menu prepared by Gemelli Executive Chef de Cuisine Gabe Cerrato, Executive Chef/Owner Anthony Cerrato (Gemelli and Strada Italiano), Corporate Chef Valdimir Martino and Strada Chef Luke Lavenski with Gemelli mixologist Devon and Dickerson taking on drinks.

Beverage options will include high, low and no-alcohol cocktails and mocktails.

Childs will be signing and selling copies of his book at the event.

Tickets are $175 per person, which includes the meal, beverage pairings, tax and gratuity. To reserve a seat, visit resy.com or gemelli.restaurant .

Danny Childs Bar Takeover at Chai Pani

“Slow Drinks” featured recipes like Paw Paw Pisco Sour and Mulberry Smash, categorized by the four harvest seasons.

“My favorite cocktail in the book is probably the easiest to make. It requires no fermentation, just sourcing of the goods. It’s called La Poblanita and it’s so good,” he said.

On July 1, Childs will head to the new Chai Pani location at 32 Banks Ave. to take over the James Beard Award-winning restaurant’s “MG Mini” mezzanine bar during lunch and dinner service.

Cocktails and zero-proof sodas will feature Appalachian and Indian flavors, spices, herbs, roots and other natural additions to marry the two.

Drop in that evening to purchase a signed book and drink prepared by Childs.

Chai Pani will offer Childs’ featured drinks on the restaurant’s menu through the week while supplies last. Admission is free. For more, visit chaipani.com .

Cocktail Lab at Eda Rhyne

On July 2, Childs will host a Cocktail Lab from 6-9 p.m. at Eda Rhyne Distillery, 101 Fairview Road, Suite A in Fairview.

Childs will participate in the monthly series moderated by Eda Rhyne’s co-owner Chris Bower to give a deep dive into regional foraging, sustainable libations and “Slow Drinks.”

Attendees will learn about Childs’ and the Eda Rhyne team’s approach to age-old processes like fermentation, infusions and pickling.

“I’m a huge fan of their products. We’re aligned as far as what we’re focused on and things we do,” Childs said.

The event is $40 per person, including one spirit flight. Purchase tickets at exploretock.com .

The public can stop in for a collaborative cocktail popup and book signing afterward.

“These events are for anybody and everybody,” Childs said. “Any opportunity that we can have to connect to the world around us and connect where food comes from or have that autonomy of finding our own food or beverages; it’s a skill we all should have and a great way to be introduced to that is through experience.”
