This tremendous melting pot of cultures is now a major destination for both business and tourism so, naturally, a number of exceptional luxury hotels have sprung up in recent years. Here, Elite Traveler picks the 10 best hotels in Istanbul.

Four Seasons Sultanahmet

A stunning example of neoclassical architecture, it is hard to believe that Four Seasons Sultanahmet was once a bleak Ottoman jailhouse for intellectual dissidents.

Located on Tevkifhane Sokak, ‘Jailhouse Street’, the Sultanahmet still bears the inscription Dersaadet Cinayet Tevkifhanesi, ‘Capital City Murder Jail’, on its main gate. The prison exercise yard has been reincarnated as an immaculate hotel courtyard with an elegant Seasons Restaurant glass pavilion serving afternoon tea.

Just a stone’s throw away from the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia, Four Seasons Sultanahmet is situated at the very heart of the city. A boutique hotel with only 65 guest rooms, the spa is exclusively for guests and has separate men’s and women’s saunas.

Top Suite: Marmara Suite

The Marmara Suite’s three private terraces present exceptional views of the historic city center. The high angled ceilings offer a sense of space away from the bustling streets.

The living room has a beautiful fireplace, state-of-the-art TV and a writing desk. At the end of the day enjoy a relaxing meal in the private dining area before soaking in the bubbling whirlpool tub. The luxurious marble bathroom includes a steam shower and its own television.

W Hotel Istanbul

Located in the center of the historic Akaretler Row Houses, a hip and trendy district, the W Hotel offers 136 guest rooms and speciality suites, equipped with everything you need to stay connected, with a cool east-meets-west vibe.

Top Suite: Extreme Wow

Entertain guests in the intimate dining room and then soak in the jacuzzi on the private terrace. If you are longing for a quiet evening simply pick your favorite film from the extensive media library and recline with a munchie-box in front of one of the three TVs.

St. Regis Istanbul

Situated in the trendy Nisantasi district, St. Regis Istanbul offers its usual level of exceptional service and world-class facilities in the city’s most vibrant neighborhood.

Guests are welcomed to relax in the Atrium or the well-stocked library before dining in one of the two excellent on-site restaurants. They have a choice between Wolfgang Puck’s signature Spago, which contextualizes fine Californian cuisine and offers rooftop views over Istanbul or the relaxed St. Regis Brasserie.

You can then work off your excesses in the Exercise Room or relax at the Iridium Spa, which boasts private treatment rooms, three pools, hammams and a tea bar.

Top Suite: The Bentley Suite

At 1,345-square-foot, it is not as big as the hotel’s Presidential Suite but what it lacks in size it makes up for in character. As the name suggests, this suite has been designed in conjunction with the luxury British car manufacturer. There are nods to the company’s iconic Continental car across its vast space.

The room’s quilted diamond upholstery is crafted from Bentley leather while the room’s wet bar has been designed to mimic a Bentley dashboard. The bar’s doors open to reveal Breitling clocks and a full bar set-up incorporating a Humidor specially crafted in the Bentley woodshop.

The suite occupies an exclusive corner location of the hotel and offers sweeping views of Abdi Ipekci Street, Maçka Park, and the Bosphorus beyond.

14 of the best hotels in Istanbul

Everything from glamorous stalwarts to tiny boutiques and trendy hostels are on offer in turkey’s biggest city. most are located close to taksim or on the historic peninsula, although options are improving on the less-visited asian shore.

telegraph travel istanbul hotels

F or such a huge city — 16 million people according to the official count — Istanbul ’s tourist areas are remarkably compact, centred around the historical peninsula, the modern city around Taksim square, and, increasingly, on the Asian shore in the up-and-coming Kadikoy district. It’s better to steer clear of the budget options, which are hit and miss, especially since the higher-end hotels are extremely affordable. You’ll find plenty of international chains in the Beyoglu district, but for a more authentic experience, hunt out one of the more historic spots, where you will feel like a character in an Agatha Christie novel. These are the best hotels in Istanbul.

Main photo: Soho House

1. Soho House, Beyoglu

The Istanbul franchise of the renowned international group is housed in an Italian palazzo, bursting with original features and revamped in a contemporary Turkish style. New additions include a rooftop pool where you can look out over the rolling vastness of Istanbul as you swim. The evening crowd in its bars and restaurants is, as you might expect, overwhelmingly young, trendy and media-heavy, meaning it feels more like London or Los Angeles than authentic Istanbul. But if you want real luxury in one of the most central spots in the city, this is it.

2. marmara pera, beyoglu.

This 15-storey monolith looks uninspiring from the outside, but makes up for it with its rooftop bar, which commands the best views over the city. Its clever design, with glass walls, grass edges and high stools, makes it feel as if you are floating above the rooftops and minarets as you drink your expertly mixed cocktail. For those with vertigo, there is also a bohemian-styled restaurant at ground level. Gorgeous views come with every room, but particularly in the suites where you get vistas of the Golden Horn — best viewed from the in-room hot tubs.

Galata Istanbul Hotel

3. The Galata Istanbul, Galata

Lots of Istanbul hotels feature Turkish baths, but the Galata’s is the real deal, dating back to 1720. The main hotel is a 19th-century bank built in the art deco style typical of this part of Istanbul, one of the most charismatic and historic areas of the city, with the iconic Galata tower on its doorstep. The neighbourhood is bustling throughout the day and night with tourists, locals and buskers, and is crammed with shops selling classic Istanbul souvenirs.

4. Witt Istanbul Suites, Cihangir

One of the few high-end hotels located in the trendy Cihangir neighbourhood — home to writers, artists and many foreign residents — and only a stone’s throw from Taksim and Istiklal. It’s easy to spend a day getting lost in this warren-like district of steep, cobbled streets and crumbling old mansions, where a block of vintage clothes shops and vegan restaurants can suddenly give way to a working-class street where lines of washing flap between the buildings. You don’t have to pay any extra to get breakfast in bed at this award-winning suite hotel.

Raffles Istanbul

5. Raffles Istanbul, Zorlu Centre

Located in the maze-like Zorlu shopping centre, you’ll find every luxury brand you can think of within a stroll of your room, as well as a plethora of restaurants and an arts centre that hosts world-renowned musicians. The level of sophistication is everything you would expect from a Raffles, and the views over the Bosphorus strait are unmatched, but the area around the hotel is something of a concrete nightmare and you will have to take taxis or the cheap-but-overcrowded metro if you want to do anything other than shopping.

6. St Regis Istanbul, Nisantasi

Unlike most of the city’s five-star hotels, which tend to be next to busy highways, the St Regis is alongside one of the city’s rare parks, and within walking distance of the charming and well-heeled Nisantasi neighbourhood. Children will love the park’s quaint cable car, and its well-tended lawns and ponds provide a welcome respite from the chaos of wider Istanbul. The local area is one of the most relaxed in the city centre — except for when Besiktas, one of Istanbul’s “big three” football teams, are playing at their nearby stadium.

Boutique Saint Sophia

7. Boutique Saint Sophia, Sultanahmet

A small boutique hotel located in the shadow of its namesake, the imposing Hagia Sophia; larger rooms have cosy balconies with views of it. It is only a few minutes’ walk from the Blue Mosque, Topkapi and the Grand Bazaar and with the most iconic and Instagrammable part of Istanbul on your doorstep, you may not feel the need to venture far. If you do, however, for an extra fee the hotel offers a variety of guided tours, including private yacht and helicopter trips.

8. Ottoman Hotel Imperial, Sultanahmet

Both rooms and suites are available at this luxury hotel based in a former school and hospital dating back almost 200 years. The city’s most famous sights are a short walk away, and there are touches of the past everywhere, from the old costumes framed on the walls to the library packed with books about Ottoman and Turkish history. Rooms are a little dated but spacious, and the location is superb. You can also take Turkish cooking lessons with the hotel’s master chef, Kadir Yilmaz.

Spa N Pool N Price £

Riva’s Moda

9. Riva’s Moda, Kadikoy

If you really want to get to the heart of the Kadikoy neighbourhood, seek out one of its clutch of boutique hotels. One of the best is Riva’s, tucked away in a genteel residential neighbourhood next to a popular corniche running along the Sea of Marmara. Here, you can see the area’s beautiful people (and occasionally a player from the nearby Fenerbahce football club) exercising in the early mornings. Riva’s is classed as a business hotel so the rooms are simple. But they’re also bright, and the real draw is the restaurant, located in the lovely garden.

10. Pera Palace, Beyoglu

Timeless glamour comes with a twist of intrigue at this art deco monument to the era when the Orient Express brought intrepid European travellers to Istanbul. Between the wars it was a favourite of the spies who thronged the city, and you still get a sense of the stories these gilded walls must surely hold. Room 101 — where Ataturk, the founder of the Turkish republic, stayed — is now Istanbul’s smallest museum, with original furniture, his personal effects and the guestbook that he signed. The service is impeccably old-fashioned.

Hilton DoubleTree Moda

11. Hilton DoubleTree Moda, Kadikoy

Istanbul’s Asian side, and particularly its central Kadikoy district, is becoming increasingly popular with both locals and tourists thanks to its artistic communities, laid-back vibe and scores of bars and restaurants. But there are still very few hotels here, with most of the existing options aimed at the backpacker market. The Hilton is a worthy exception. It’s a five-minute stroll from the ferry port and has a rooftop bar with views over the water.

Spa Y Pool Y Price £

12. Ajwa Sultanahmet, Sultanahmet

The décor hits you between the eyes as you walk through the door of this luxury hotel on the historic peninsula — subtle it is not. Each room is a riot of sumptuous colours and Ottoman-inspired patterns, silk carpets and mother-of-pearl inlaid furniture, with bathrooms fitted out in hammam style. This hotel caters firmly for the growing Muslim travel market, with a halal policy that means no alcohol on site. But if you can get past that, its restaurant serves up wonderfully traditional Azerbaijani fare, which is hard to find elsewhere.

Ciragan Palace

13. Ciragan Palace, Bosphorus

If money is no object, head to this celebration of excess overlooking the Bosphorus, which holds the undisputed crown of Istanbul’s best luxury hotel. It was built as an Ottoman palace in the mid-19th century, and its Sultan’s Suite now ranks among the most expensive hotel rooms in the world. Those in the cheaper seats (well, beds) can still enjoy its shopping arcade packed with designer brands, and the option of butler service. Five restaurants serve a signature lamb casserole alongside an impressive array of world cuisines.

14. Istanbul Life Hotel, Kadikoy

This small and arty hotel on the Asian side is tucked away off the main boulevard that runs along the portside. It’s a slightly grimy area, but that is immediately forgotten as you see its gleaming white exterior. Inside, it is tasteful and extremely comfortable, with high-ceilinged rooms, bright furnishings and plenty of modern art. The surrounding streets have suffered decades of decline but are enjoying a renaissance, with artists, ateliers and students from the nearby Marmara University moving in.

The best luxury hotels in Istanbul

Rich history meets contemporary hospitality in one of the world’s oldest cities

There are few cities that can lay claim to quite the breadth of history and culture boasted by Istanbul. Inhabited as far back as the 6 th century BCE, it has variously served as the capital of the Byzantine and Ottoman Empires, as well as forming part of both the Ancient Greek and Roman realms. Prized for its strategically advantageous position at the crossing point between Europe and Asia, as well as its protected position on a peninsula in the Bosphorus River, it has long proved an attractive base for sultans, kings and seats of immense power.

After the founding of the Turkish Republic in 1923, the official capital moved to Ankara, but that hasn’t prevented Istanbul from continuing to flourish as one of the most economically and culturally prosperous cities in the country. Teeming with jaw-dropping attractions, from the stunning Topkapi Palace to the famed Hagia Sophia, as well as world-class food and a vibrant nightlife scene, Istanbul easily ranks among Europe’s top city break destinations. Accordingly, it has the hotels to match, with big-name hospitality groups and boutique propositions staking their claim to prime real estate along the Bosphorus over the past few decades.

But, with so much choice (the Four Seasons alone has two five-star hotels in the city), how to choose? Read on for our guide to the best luxury hotels in Istanbul.

Shangri-La Bosphorus, Beşiktaş

shangri-la istanbul bosphorus

Occupying a prime position overlooking the Bosphorus in the Beşiktaş district, moments from the magnificent Dolmabahçe Palace and with views over Istanbul Old Town, the Shangri-La has been welcoming guests to its majestic 1930s period property for a decade. Boasting 186 rooms and suites, many of which are far larger than at Istanbul hotels of a similar calibre, the hotel acts as a sanctuary from the bustling city outside, combining the hotel group’s Eastern traditions with Ottoman-inspired glamour for an unforgettable stay.

shangri-la bosphorus istanbul

Istanbul is renowned for its great food but, if you can’t face navigating the maze of bars and restaurants in buzzy Beşiktaş, Shangri-La’s riverside IST TOO promises international cuisine (including plenty of Turkish favourites) with irresistible views and an impressive list of homegrown wines. Elsewhere, Shang Palace offers elevated authentic Cantonese cuisine and Le Bar provides a sophisticated place to stop in for a nightcap before bed. Weary after a long day of sightseeing? Head to the subterranean spa, Chi, to avail yourself of its serene hammam, indoor swimming pool, sauna, steam room, and traditional Eastern and Turkish treatments.

Rooms from €290 per night, visit shangri-la.com

The Peninsula Istanbul, Karaköy

peninsula istanbul

Istanbul’s newest five-star hotel, The Peninsula, opened in early 2023 in an enviable position next to the recently rejuvenated Galataport district (home to the Istanbul Museum of Modern Art) and just across the Galata Bridge from the city’s main tourist sites. Spanning four historic buildings on the banks of the Bosphorus, the oldest of which dates back to 1912, The Peninsula blends period features with the absolute latest mod-cons – think Japanese heated toilets and in-room touchscreen controls for everything from the TV and curtains to the lights and valet service.

peninsula istanbul

As with most city hotels, outdoor space is at a premium in Istanbul, but at The Peninsula, it’s available in abundance. As well as lush gardens and an outdoor swimming pool overlooking the river, the hotel also boasts an elegant roof terrace as part of its upscale Turkish-Asian eatery, Gallada. Also located in the hotel’s central Art Deco-style building, head downstairs to find the all-day international Lobby restaurant (we can think of few finer breakfast spots) and even further down to discover a vast wellness offering featuring a gym, swimming pool, hammam and spa with eight treatment rooms.

Rooms from €1,050 per night, visit peninsula.com

Conrad Istanbul Bosphorus, Beşiktaş

conrad istanbul

Also located in the popular Beşiktaş district, it’s hard to miss the Conrad Istanbul. Perched higher up the hill than its five-star rivals, its 14-storey wave-like structure creates a beacon calling home tired sightseers and weary business travellers at the end of a long day. And, while it may be a little further from the most famous attractions than some of its rivals, what it loses in commute time it gains in seriously incredible views – especially when appreciated over a cocktail at the rooftop bar and sushi restaurant , Summit.

conrad istanbul suite bathroom

The Conrad’s location also affords it a little more space for facilities than some of its counterparts. Further dining options include the Manzara all-day restaurant and Monet coffee lounge (with a further Italian restaurant set to open next year), while a basement wellness space offers a hair salon, gym, spa, swimming pool, hammam and yoga studio . If that wasn’t quite enough to keep you occupied, you’ll also find two tennis courts and an outdoor swimming pool in the grounds, as well as a regularly rotating programme of live music and open-air film screenings. This is a city hotel designed for far more than a long weekend.

Four Seasons at Sultanahmet

four seasons Istanbul sultanahmet

As with most European ‘old towns’, finding space for a five-star hotel in Sultanahmet, the Ottoman heart of Istanbul, isn’t easy – so don’t let the fact that the Four Seasons is housed in a former prison put you off. In fact, having reopened earlier this year after a major refurbishment, which saw its turrets and walls doused in a cheery yellow and its 65 rooms and suites given a thorough makeover by London-based Goddard Littlefair, the vibe is now more akin to a chateau in the South of France – and saw it scoop Travel + Leisure ’s Best Hotel in the World award in 2023.

four seasons istanbul sultanahmet courtyard

One of two Four Seasons hotels in Istanbul (the other can be found further upriver in Beşiktaş), there are few luxury hotels in Istanbul better located if you’re planning a weekend of sightseeing. Moments from the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia, with the Topkapi Palace and Grand Bazaar reachable within an easy stroll, if navigating Istanbul’s (limited) public transport network doesn’t sound like much fun, this is the hotel for you. As for its four restaurants and bars, traditional Turkish spa and lush courtyard? Merely icing on the cake.

Rooms from £666 per night, visit fourseasons.com

Raffles Istanbul, Zincirlikuyu

raffles istanbul bedroom

Found at the heart of Istanbul’s commercial district, but within close enough proximity to pop out for some sightseeing between meetings should you wish, Raffles Istanbul is a modern hotel bursting with old-school charm and hospitality. Voted the Best Hotel in Turkey by Conde Nast Traveller readers in 2022, every room and suite comes with a private balcony or terrace (a feature sorely lacking from many hotel rooms in Istanbul) as well as floor-to-ceiling windows that maximise the hotel’s hilltop position.

raffles istanbul swimming pool

Foodies are particularly well catered for here thanks to a choice of seven bars and restaurants, including the Asian Isokoyo, Mediterannenan Rocca, a dedicated champagne room and the Lounge 6 cocktail bar . Likewise, the wellness offering at Raffles is one of the most expansive in Istanbul, spanning nearly 3,000 square metres and offering seven spa suites, three hammams, a fitness centre, pool, yoga studio, two hair and nail salons, and separate male and female relaxation spaces.

Rooms from €460 per night, visit raffles.com

Mandarin Oriental Bosphorus, Beşiktaş

mandarin oriental istanbul suite

Promising more of a resort feel than the other hotels on this list, largely owing to an upriver location that affords it the luxury of greater space, the Mandarin Oriental has gone to great lengths to make the most of its riverside position, with many of its rooms and the majority of its restaurants and communal spaces promising Bosphorus views. Drawing inspiration inside and out from Ottoman design and architecture, rooms are light and airy with opulent touches of purple and gold, while its sprawling ballrooms set the scene for highly glamorous events.

mandarin oriental istanbul gardens

During the day, unwind on the riverside terrace, take a running tour of the local area or call on the concierge to organise one of the many and varied cultural and historical experiences devised specially for Mandarin Oriental guests. When it comes to dinner, there are some familiar names on the menu. The Mandarin Oriental is home to the Istanbul outposts of both Hakkasan and Novikov, as well as its own Italian Olea restaurant, where the best seat in the house is practically on top of the water.

There’s never a bad time of year to visit Istanbul. The crown jewel of the Bosphorus, with its endless layers of history, is not only one of the richest European (and Asian, technically, given it straddles both continents) capitals for museum lovers and those whose idea of a perfect vacation includes wandering the halls of its gilded palaces, covered markets, and mosques. It’s also a rising hub for next-generation creatives, with cutting-edge galleries, world-class restaurants, charming fashion boutiques, and plenty of buzzing nightlife to keep you occupied until the early hours.

The choice of hotels in Istanbul is equally head-spinning: there are the palatial hotels that line the western shore of the Bosphorus, that great waterway that connects the Black Sea to the Mediterranean, and which pride themselves on their grandeur and reverence for the city’s rich, multicultural history. Or, there’s a new guard of cutting-edge, design-forward stays that speak to the city’s vibrant creative energy, such as the local outpost of Soho House housed in a former embassy quarters, or the sleek splendor of the newly-opened Peninsula hotel, a peaceful oasis in the heart of the bustling Karaköy district.

Here, find Vogue ’s pick of the best hotels in Istanbul.

Sitting on the lip of land right where the Bosphorus meets the Golden Horn estuary, The Peninsula boasts genuinely jaw-dropping views of the architectural marvels that dot the opposite shore—but it’s the scale of the property that will strike you first. Spread across four separate edifices—three of which date to the early 19th century, and serve as a history lesson in architectural styles ranging from Art Nouveau to Arts and Crafts; a fourth was constructed specifically for The Peninsula—and nestled among gardens bursting with magnolia and pomegranate trees designed by Swiss landscape architect Enzo Enea, it’s a peaceful enclave right in the beating heart of the city.

The Best Hotels in Istanbul From Bosphorus Palaces to Intimate Boutiques

Even if it’s just some rest and relaxation you’re after, The Peninsula has you covered. Deep in the bowels of the building lies an almost obscenely large spa complex, with a centerpiece of a showstopping 82-foot indoor pool—lit by shimmering domes inspired by the scalloped niches found in local mosques, installed with speakers playing gentle underwater music for a more 21st-century touch. The hotel’s real coup, however, was scoring a collaboration with the country’s first (and indeed, only) two Michelin-starred chef Fatih Tutak, whose restaurant Turk Fatih Tutak, is informed by his previous stints at Noma and Nihonryori Ryugin in Tokyo—and his new outpost at the hotel, Gallada, has quickly become one of the city’s most hotly-in-demand reservations. Make your reservation now.

Ciragan Palace Kempinski

The Best Hotels in Istanbul From Bosphorus Palaces to Intimate Boutiques

There are few buildings in Istanbul quite as storied as the Ciragan Palace, which was commissioned in the mid-19th century for an Ottoman sultan who never lived to see its completion. Thankfully, since it was converted to a hotel in the early ’90s (and later taken over by the Kempinski luxury hotel group), anyone who takes a room here can now enjoy its breathtaking opulence. (And plenty have: previous A-list guests include Oprah Winfrey, Madonna, and Bill Clinton.) Not a hotel to rest on its laurels, however, the ever-evolving offering at the Ciragan Palace ensures that repeat guests—and there are plenty of them—always have something new to discover. A recent refurbishment has added a fresh, contemporary touch to the Ottoman-inspired interiors of its 317 rooms and 31 suites, with elegant striped wallpaper in shades of burgundy and deep blue and lavishly marbled bathrooms. There are also two recently opened restaurants, including Akdeniz, the brainchild of visionary Turkish chef Esra Muslu, which offers a menu of pan-Mediterranean mezze where locally sourced vegetables play the starring role.

The Best Hotels in Istanbul From Bosphorus Palaces to Intimate Boutiques

While it’s a short taxi ride to the electric energy of all of Istanbul’s centrally-located sites, the resort-like feel of its multiple outdoor pools—all fringed with sun loungers and offering views out over the sparkling blue of the Bosphorus; you can even enjoy a spa treatment in one of the cabanas located right by the shoreline—means the Ciragan Palace offers the best of both worlds. It’s a perfect launchpad for exploring the city, but also a tranquil haven to return to once the sightseeing is over and all you want to do is chill. (Just make sure you ask for a tour of the historic palace that houses some of its top suites and the Tuğra restaurant, and is filled to the brim with eye-popping architectural details of marble and mother of pearl: it’s just as breathtaking and historically significant as any of the Ottoman palaces most tourists would have to buy tickets to visit.)

Soho House Istanbul

The Best Hotels in Istanbul From Bosphorus Palaces to Intimate Boutiques

Located within the tangle of steep, buzzing streets that make up the city’s Beyoğlu district, the member’s club Soho House—which first set up shop in Istanbul in 2015—serves as full confirmation (if you really needed it) that the city is an up-and-coming creative capital. And in keeping with Istanbul’s broader spirit of paying reverence to the past while never being afraid to reinvent those traditions, the group’s signature cozy aesthetic has been applied to the historic surroundings of the former U.S. embassy in which Soho House sits with thoughtfulness and care. The rabbit warren of the atmospheric member’s club building features plenty of high ceilings, Art Nouveau woodwork and etched glass, and grand staircases, but there’s a casual, homely feel too, whether in the plaster walls that have been left to peel and flicker under the candlelight each evening, or the rooms set up with snooker tables and chess boards to bolster its convivial spirit.

The Best Hotels in Istanbul From Bosphorus Palaces to Intimate Boutiques

Across a courtyard filled with a maze of trees and hedges—offering plenty of nooks to take your morning coffee in—lies the main hotel building, which, while being a more recent, glass-walled addition, artfully melds the contemporary feel of Soho House’s trademark decor with a handful of local flourishes. (Think traditional iznik tiles in the bathrooms, all stocked with copious amounts of Cowshed and Soho Skin products, or kilim cushions scattered across the plush linens of your enormous king-size bed.) The hotel is a culinary destination in its own right, too, with local Istanbulites packing out its four restaurants, including an outpost of the popular Italian restaurant group Cecconi’s and superb, summer-only Greek-Mykonian eatery Apheleia, with offers a gyros-taco hybrid topped with tomato confit and paprika yogurt, and beef souvlaki and giant prawns cooked in an outdoor Josper oven. Make sure you grab a seat on the terrace: both Apheleia and the rooftop bar offer stunning views over the rooftops that sweep down the hillside—never more beautiful when bathed in the orange glow of an Istanbul sunset.

Four Seasons Hotel at Sultanahmet

The Best Hotels in Istanbul From Bosphorus Palaces to Intimate Boutiques

While Four Seasons has two outposts in Istanbul, there’s nothing quite like its first hotel in the city, which opened in 1996 in the heart of the historic Sultanahmet district: mere steps away from the Hagia Sophia, the Ottoman-era Blue Mosque, and the dazzling splendor of the Topkapi Palace. (In 2008, it opened a second, more palatial property on the banks of the Bosphorus, with multiple restaurants, a spa complex, and a sweeping outdoor pool area.) Step inside its discrete entrance, however, and you couldn’t feel further from the throngs of tourists that pass through the nearby streets: housed in a former prison, the hotel recently reopened after an extensive refurbishment, and its soothing, earth-toned interiors are a balm after a long day walking around the city.

The Best Hotels in Istanbul From Bosphorus Palaces to Intimate Boutiques

Bonus points for the former prison yard at the center of the building, which has been transformed into a leafy courtyard where you can take your breakfast en plein air: the dining options here, in general, are top-notch, whether the main restaurant Avlu that serves modern Anatolian dishes all day (think Mücver zucchini fritters or cheese and sucuk pide that has been perfectly charred in a wood-fired oven) or the in-house patisserie for delicate French-style pastries at breakfast or afternoon tea. Naturally, there’s a spa too, specializing in hammam rituals that include a foam massage and hair cleansing to wash out that Bosphorus brine. The ultimate perk? A shuttle service operates both by bus and boat between the two sister properties, meaning whichever one you stay at, you’ll be sure to get the best of both worlds.

Shangri-La Bosphorus

The Best Hotels in Istanbul From Bosphorus Palaces to Intimate Boutiques

Like most of the grande dame hotels in Istanbul, the building that houses the Shangri-La Bosphorus—conveniently located in the buzzing Beşiktaş neighborhood and within walking distance of the upmarket Nişantaşı shopping district—has a rich and fascinating history. Once a tobacco factory, its vast halls have since been refashioned into one of the ritziest of the hotels that line the stretch of the Bosphorus where the Ottoman-era sultans established their 19th-century palaces to make the most of the waterway’s famously restorative breeze. As soon as you step into the lobby—packed to the rafters with precious marbles and gilded details—the only thing that could possibly distract you from those eye-popping interiors are the views: the panoramic outlook over the glittering blue waters of the shipping channel beyond is all but unparalleled.

Photographer Marcelo Barbosa

This being a Shangri-La, there are touches of East Asian influence woven throughout, not least in the superb Shang Palace restaurant, which serves Cantonese classics—succulent prawn har gau and cheung fun, hand-pulled noodles, and Peking duck prepared with skin so crisp it practically shatters—executed with the utmost skill. Also worth a shout-out? The top-tier spa, which blends Turkish hospitality with traditional Asian healing methods and well-being practices, from Chinese-style acupressure to traditional Thai massage to stretch you back to life after a long-haul flight.

JW Marriott Istanbul Bosphorus

The Best Hotels in Istanbul From Bosphorus Palaces to Intimate Boutiques

Located in the heart of the lively Karaköy district, where leafy, historic alleyways are packed with an eclectic mix of cafés, bars, and fashion boutiques, the JW Marriot Istanbul Bosphorus feels keenly attuned to its surroundings. Not least in its grand centerpiece: an airy, 35-meter-long atrium that dates back nearly two centuries connects two of the streets, making it feel like an extension of the walkways that surround it. With its walls clad in ornate, pale stone and the dramatic iron chandeliers that descend from the glass ceiling above, it radiates grandeur, but somehow also feels warm and inviting.

The Best Hotels in Istanbul From Bosphorus Palaces to Intimate Boutiques

Elsewhere within this recently refurbished outpost of Marriott’s signature five-star brand, though, the emphasis is on a more subtle kind of luxury. The plush, peaceful rooms are decked out in a palette of cream and powder blue that echo the views stretching across the city’s two waterways, with the lights of the markets and mosques on the opposite side of the Golden Horn twinkling at dusk. It’s an outlook best enjoyed from the hotel’s stunning rooftop restaurant and bar—or, indeed, its Michelin-recommended dining destination Octo. Overseen by the Portuguese chef Jorge Lavos Costa, the restaurant uses local Turkish produce to whizz up riffs on classic dishes from both his homeland and across Latin America, from sea bass tartar tacos to grilled octopus and grouper. Whatever hour of the day, it’s one of the best vantage points from which to see the city—and one of the best spots to experience its vibrant culinary scene, too.

There is something about Istanbul that draws the crowds, with international tourists totaling nearly 44.6 million in 2022 alone. The city wows with its stunning setting along the Bosphorus and Golden Horn, the history, the ancient bazaars dating back to the days of the Silk Road, the many cafés and restaurants, and the juxtaposition of modern, old, European, and Asian.

Istanbul is used to catering to illustrious international visitors; after all, it has always been a trading hub. If you are after a stay with a bit of luxury, superb service, and unique views and locations that take your breath away, Istanbul can certainly come up with the goods.

While nearly every brand of luxury hotel has a property in Istanbul, there are some that are better than others, for often just small and particular reasons. So, here are my personal favorite luxury hotels in the city, tried and tested and chosen for their pampering potential, their location, and their history. They all reflect Istanbul in their own way, offering something special for a memorable stay.

Best Luxury Hotels In Istanbul, Turkey

1. pera palace hotel.

Pera Palace Hotel

The Pera Palace Hotel lies in the heart of the Beyoğlu (Pera) district, on the so-called modern side of Istanbul. It’s steps away from the Galata Tower and the famous shopping street Istiklal Avenue. The Pera Palace is in a league of its own, a historic hotel that boasts the first elevator in Turkey, still functioning today. Every guest is allowed to ride up to their floor once upon arrival to experience the historic mode of transportation but not to exhaust it completely.

The Pera Palace has welcomed heads of state and so many famous names that most rooms have names rather than numbers to remember those who stayed here before. I stayed in the Greta Garbo room, oozing with subdued elegance suitable for a movie legend. Probably the most famous guest, though, was Agatha Christie, who wrote parts of Murder on the Orient Express in her room, making the Pera Palace a literary landmark in Istanbul .

Staying here is special. The extraordinarily nattily dressed doormen welcome you like royalty, and history is palatable at every corner. The beds, with their crisp cotton, are the best I have ever slept on. Believe me when I say that I, in fact, tried to find out where the mattress and bedding were sourced from. Sadly, they seemed to be bespoke, so I probably saved myself a lot of money.

2. Four Seasons Sultanahmet

Four Seasons Sultanahmet

When is a prison, not a prison? When it has been reinvented as a luxury hotel so lovely that you’d love to stay confined within its walls for a fair while. In the middle of Istanbul’s oldest district and the city’s most visited sites — the Hagia Sophia (Aya Sophya), Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace — and everything else right outside your hotel, this is undoubtedly one of the best places to stay for first-time visitors to Istanbul.

On the same stretch of land as the Sultan’s main palace right next door, it is not surprising that the views from the roof terrace are to die for. They offer a 360-degree view across the Bosphorus, Golden Horn, Galata, the Sea of Marmara with its Princes’s Islands, and more. The rooms and suites are not at all reminiscent of the former cells but comfortable, sumptuously decorated, and spacious. But for utter peace and quiet, opt for a room facing the wonderful courtyard gardens rather than the street. And for that extra bit of Turkish style and luxury, some suites offer a personal little marble hammam and your own private steam room.

3. Kempinski Ciragan Palace

Kempinski Ciragan Palace

When your view is of the waters of the Bosphorus twinkling and the little Ortakoy Mosque snuggling underneath, then really, the hotel is nearly secondary. But this is the Ciragan Palace, the Palace of Light, and former second or third home of the Sultans of Constantinople. The property certainly matches the view. I have been lucky enough to have stayed in some amazing hotels around the world, but this one is right at the top.

Its newly renovated rooms and facilities — designed by local star-designer and Ottoman history expert Serdar Gulgun — and restaurants are stylish with the perfect mix of Ottoman design and modern touches.

That said, there is a separate block, the original old palace itself, where you really can channel your inner Sultan. The Sultan’s Suite, for example, has welcomed celebrities such as Oprah and comes complete with a hammam, living room, bedroom suite, guest room, and a telescope placed so you can zoom in on all the boats sailing past.

The Ciragan Palace’s rooms and suites come in all shapes and sizes, but you need to opt for one with Bosphorus views, preferably the deluxe room with a double balcony, such as room 159. And with the scrumptious pistachio Turkish delight in your room, together with various other snacks refreshed daily, you will never want to leave. But should you want to, the market around the Ortakoy Mosque and its ferry stop are within easy walking distance, connecting you with old, new, and Asian Istanbul sights.

4. Raffles Istanbul

Raffles Istanbul

What we as tourists and travelers often forget, especially in Istanbul, is that a city is not only made up of its historic sights. Istanbul is not just an ancient destination, but also a vibrant modern city with people going on with their daily lives, shopping, eating, and doing business. They rarely ever visit old Istanbul. Enter the Raffles Istanbul. It is located in the Besiktas neighborhood, high on a hill looking across the Bosphorus and the city, alongside the high-end Zorlus Centre.

The hotel itself is a modern high-rise, allowing for amazing views across to the Asian side with its gigantic Turkish flags fluttering, its bridges, and the sleek television tower. The rooms and suites are luxury pure, with every suite equipped not only with dressing rooms, bathrooms of unreal proportions, and living, office, and sleeping spaces but also an original Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman to recline in and look out across the city panorama. If you opt for a corner room or suite — such as suite 2002 on the 20th floor — you get a balcony that wraps around the entire corner for endless lounging.

5. The Ritz-Carlton, Istanbul

The Ritz-Carlton, Istanbul

Despite having been a luxury destination in Istanbul for more than 20 years now, the Ritz-Carlton Istanbul is still going strong today, continuously winning accolades. I first stayed there shortly after it opened, which seems like a few lifetimes ago, but I am pleased to say that the sheen has certainly not worn off since. Located in the Dolmabahce neighborhood — just a little uphill from the Dolmabahce Palace and within easy walking distance of shopping around Taksim Square — the hotel is slightly off the beaten path but still perfect for exploring.

Located on the top floors of a tall building, the views are superb, and none are better than those from the rooftop pool. The rooms and suites are a perfect mix of understated elegance but with a colorful dash of Ottoman sumptuousness. While some look out across the Bosphorus, in this case, the city views are superb, too. Add an absolutely enormous spa and Turkish bath area , plus the never-waning Ritz-Carlton service, and you are in for a treat.

Fascinating, compelling and more than slightly frenetic, Istanbul is one of Europe’s great cities , as well as its largest.

The only place in the world to straddle two continents (Europe and Asia), and the former seat of not one but three empires, Istanbul represents colour and history like no other. It’s an extraordinary “tale of two cities”, combining ancient architecture and a warm, friendly people, alongside chic concept stores, craft breweries and, of course, endless types of coffee.

With a hotel scene as wildly varied as the city’s sights and districts, it can be tough to pin down where to base yourself among the huge collection of boutique , luxury and imaginatively converted hotels.

While the old city, Sultanahmet, is full of Istanbul’s biggest attractions – including Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque – many visitors prefer Beyoglu and Karakoy on the other side of the Golden Horn.

Wherever area you choose to make your home in Turkey ’s former capital, here’s a selection of the 10 best hotels to get you started.

The best hotels in Istanbul are:

Best for being in the thick of things: hotel the public, best for families: hammamhane.

  • For ultra-modern luxury: Raffles Istanbul

Best for city views: Witt Istanbul Suites

Best for arty chic: bankerhan hotel galata, best for classic elegance: four seasons hotel istanbul at sultanahmet, best for friendly charm: hotel empress zoë, best for the sights: hotel yasmak sultan, best for laid-back chic: tomtom suites, best for city escapes: sumahan on the water, neighbourhood: beyoglu.

This hotel is right in the throbbing heart of Beyoglu, specifically just off the main pedestrianised artery Istiklal Caddesi. The style is eclectic, to say the least – lots of exposed brickwork, colourful art on the walls, the odd vintage touch, plus some rooms with terraces (worth paying extra for).

Pan-European food is served in 1901 Cafe and Bistro, and the lobby bar branches out into an attractive courtyard.

Health & wellbeing.

Surrounded by the antiques shops and trendy cafes of Cukurcuma, Hammamhane is built around the restored Cukurcuma Hamami Turkish baths.

The hotel’s style is a cushy mix of rustic and industrial chic, with exposed brick walls and beamed ceilings. They all come with kitchenettes and plenty of room for extra beds and cots, as well as private terraces. There’s also a family room with its own garden and adjoining rooms.

Best for ultra-modern luxury: Raffles Istanbul

Neighbourhood: zorlu centre.

Set away from central Istanbul in the shiny Zorlu Centre and the business district – but easily reached by metro – Raffles Istanbul is as stylishly modern as its sleek surroundings. Contemporary but by no means minimalist, the rooms mingle neutral decor with discreet splashes of Turkish art, as well as sweeping views of the city.

Enjoy top-class pan-Asian cuisine in Isokyo after cocktails in the Long Bar, or a lavish afternoon tea in the Lavinia Lounge. There’s a spa, too, with indoor and outdoor pools.

Neighbourhood: Cihangir

In a handy spot between Beyoglu and the Bosphorus waterfront, Witt has been creatively designed by leading Istanbul studio Autoban. But there’s comfort too among the slick contemporary elegance, as well as marble kitchenettes. The style leans heavily on Fifties modernism, which works beautifully with the wooden floors and mirrored brickwork.

If your room doesn’t have its own terrace, head up to the roof and chill out in the garden, soaking up superb views of the city.

Neighbourhood: Galata

This friendly boutique hotel in a late 18th-century building is as much of an art gallery as it is a hotel. Works from contemporary Turkish artists adorn the exposed brick walls of the funky bar and breakfast area, as well as the 36 rooms.

The decor is streamlined – very much so in the case of a handful of Japanese-style rooms – but it’s worth splashing out on a deluxe sea-view room overlooking the Bosphorus. Its artfully ramshackle look is perfectly in keeping with this up-and-coming part of Karakoy.

Neighbourhood: Sultanahmet

You’d never know this sumptuous, sprawling hotel was once a prison when it was built in 1919. Where prisoners used to exercise is now a fragrant courtyard garden, overlooked by the arched windows of the handsomely designed rooms that subtly evoke Ottoman times.

It’s a gorgeous place for a restaurant, and there’s also a roof terrace that offers knockout views of Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque.

Several townhouses join together to form this quirky boutique hotel, all of which huddle around a lovely courtyard garden where you can see ruins of a 15th-century hammam. It’s a charming jumble of Ottoman textiles, art and exposed stone, capped with some wonderful views from the terraces of Hagia Sophia and the Bosphorus.

The small rooms really are small, so upgrade to one of the larger ones, preferably with a terrace.

With Topkapi, Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque within a few minutes’ walk, Yasmak Sultan makes a convenient spot for exploring the old city. There’s a delightful Old World air about the place, with heavy silks and brocades, and gilt-edged furnishings.

What makes this hotel really stand out is the spa with its indoor pool and, notably, a very good rooftop restaurant with fantastic views.

Tomtom Suites is surrounded by the buzz of Beyoglu but feels cosily cloistered – aptly, as it’s a former Franciscan convent. Its modern, spacious suites exude a feeling of calm, with polished wooden floors, faintly Fifties-style furnishings and original artworks.

If you really want to treat yourself, go for the luxury suite with its substantial kitchen and large private terrace. The rooftop restaurant is just as glamorous.

Neighbourhood: Cenglekoy

A converted 19th-century distillery makes a luxurious bolthole from the city – right on the banks of the Bosphorus on the Asian side. You can take the ferry to the European side or splash out on the hotel’s private boat taxi.

Some of its modern rooms have fireplaces and two levels, but all look out on the Bosphorus, as does the waterfront restaurant and terrace. There’s also a wellness centre with a hammam for relaxation, as well as a well-stocked library. All very civilised.

Travel Guide

  • # 6 in Best Cheap European Vacations for 2023-2024

Bridging East and West – Europe and Asia – Istanbul possesses a richly complicated heritage. Once the capital of the Ottoman and Byzantine empires, this city's prestigious history has left us with many monuments to cherish. Plus, it integrates its past and present to create a unique mix of architecture; a glass skyscraper next to a Byzantine church or a colorful bazaar in the shadow of a shopping mall. The natural landscape is also impressive. The Bosphorus, a narrow strait, cuts the city in two and connects the Sea of Marmara in the south to the Black Sea in the north. From the blue waters, visitors will see a skyline of domes, steeples and modern towers.

The Best Luxury Hotels in Istanbul, Turkey

Istanbul is synonymous with opulence, with luxury hotels fit for royalty

One glance at the exquisite tile work that covers the gilt-edged Topkapı Palace shows that the city of Istanbul is synonymous with opulence. Although they might not quite be palaces, these luxury hotels are fit for royalty.

You’ll find some of Istanbul ’s most exclusive hotels exactly where you’d expect them – hugging the shores of the Bosphorus, in one of the city’s tallest skyscrapers or in the Neoclassical masterpiece that was custom-built to partner the Orient Express. Others are less obvious, with one housed in an old raki distillery and another in an Ottoman-era prison. Get the credit card ready – these are the most luxurious places to stay in Istanbul.

1. A'jia Hotel

Boutique Hotel

A bed in a hotel room with a balcony at Ajia Hotel

Right on the banks of the Bosphorus , this hotel is perfect for couples looking for a romantic getaway. Book the Bosphorus Pasha Suite with its large patio doors leading to a sunlit private terrace – ready for your morning coffee and eggs. You can even ask the hotel to prepare your room with rose petals scattered across the bed and a candlelit bath. During the day, explore Istanbul from a private luxury yacht, which can be organised through the concierge.

2. Pera Palace Hotel

Hotel, Luxury

A bed, two bedside tables with lamps and a chaise lounge in a hotel room at Pera Palace Hotel

Built in 1892 to house Orient Express passengers about to embark on their long journey to Paris, the Pera Palace is an Istanbul institution. Other than the Ottoman palaces of the time, this was the first building in the country to offer electricity, hot running water and an elevator, which still works today. This opulent 19th-century vibe remains throughout each of its 115 rooms and suites. The hotel is located one block from the boutiques of İstiklal Avenue in Beyoğlu , and foodies will also love their stay here: enjoy afternoon tea in the Kubbeli Lounge, take dinner at the glitzy Agatha Restaurant and have drinks at the dimly lit Orient Bar.

4. Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at Sultanahmet

Two beds, an armchair, couch and table in a hotel room at Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at Sultanahmet

This architectural masterpiece was constructed in the Turkish Neoclassical style in 1918, and is replete with pointed arches, decorative tiles, dramatic domes and an overhanging roof. Its original function? A prison. But the old exercise yard has blossomed into a gorgeous garden, and the cells have made way for 65 five-star rooms that live up to the international standards of the Four Seasons while also echoing the building’s Ottoman roots. The A’ya Terrace makes the most of the central Sultanahmet setting, with comfy al fresco lounges gazing up admiringly at the towering minarets of the Hagia Sophia just metres away.

5. Ajwa Hotel Sultanahmet

A bed with a wooden frame, bench seat with flowers, and patterned wallpaper in a hotel room at Ajwa Hotel Sultanahmet

While many of Istanbul’s most luxurious hotels occupy rejuvenated Ottoman mansions, Ajwa built one from scratch. A five-star sanctuary shielded from the buzz of Sultanahmet – roughly halfway between the Blue Mosque and the Grand Bazaar – the hotel’s common areas and 61 rooms abound with mother-of-pearl furniture, silk Tabriz carpets, original artworks, rich marble, hand-painted ceilings and bespoke tile work. Indulge yourself at the Afiya Spa, rent one of the hotel’s Bentleys to explore Turkey’s biggest metropolis and feast on Azerbaijani cuisine at the Zeferan Restaurant overlooking the hotchpotch rooftops of the Old City on one side and the Sea of Marmara on the other.

6. Raffles Istanbul

A bed and TV in a hotel room with floor-to-ceiling windows and a balcony with views over the city at Raffles Istanbul

Istanbul isn’t known for its skyscrapers, which only makes this glistening five-star property stand out even more. Everything about Raffles Istanbul is contemporary, from its business district location in the Beşiktaş area of the European side to the hotel’s 185 crisp, minimalist rooms. This 134m (440ft) tower is Raffles’s only foray into Europe, completed in 2014 as part of the upmarket Zorlu Center retail hub. The ultra-modern rooms and six innovative dining options make this one of Istanbul’s most exclusive hotels.

7. Sirkeci Mansion

A bed, armchair, table with a bowl of fruit and floor-to-ceiling doors leading to a balcony in a hotel room at Sirkeci Mansion

When the Boyaci family opened this hotel 50 years ago, its name was the Sirkeci Konak, the Turkish name for a wooden mansion. The property now has one of the few wooden facades remaining on the historic peninsula, a nod to the 32 traditional rooms inside, each decorated with hardwood floors, Turkish carpets and stately furnishings. Relax in the elegant Neyzade Restaurant, the in-house hammam bath or on your balcony peering over the walls of the lush Gülhane Park next door.

8. Wyndham Grand Istanbul Kalamis Marina Hotel

Two beds, a desk with a chair and a seating area with two armchairs in a hotel room at Wyndham Grand Istanbul Kalamis Marina Hotel

If you’re looking for five-star luxury on a budget, or an escape from the hectic streets of Sultanahmet and Beyoğlu, here’s your hotel. Across the road from the Kalamış Marina in a laid-back Anatolian neighbourhood en route to the Princes’ Islands, this Wyndham property features seven dining options serving delicacies from both sides of the Bosphorus, the soothing full-service Blue Harmony Spa, pools on the roof and in the courtyard and 210 flamboyant rooms.

9. The St Regis Istanbul

A bed, desk and chair in a hotel room at the St Regis Istanbul

The Nişantaşı neighbourhood has a reputation for being Istanbul’s answer to Fifth Avenue, so there was no better place for New York’s St Regis brand to add a dash of the Big Apple to Turkey. This hotel flung open its doors in 2015, built in the Art Deco style to blend in with the affluent area’s 1920s aesthetic. Wolfgang Puck’s Spago restaurant fuses Turkish and international flavours, the tranquil Iridium Spa feels a world away from the organised chaos of the nearby İstiklal Avenue , and the in-house art collection boasts big names such as Andy Warhol.
