Top March Cruises: Caribbean, Rivers & Romantic Retreats

March is the perfect time to escape the last chill of winter and set sail on a sun-soaked adventure. I’ve scoured the seas and compiled a list of the best cruises that promise to turn your spring into an unforgettable journey.

From exotic Caribbean getaways to serene European river cruises, I’ll guide you through the top picks that cater to every taste and budget. Whether you’re looking for family fun or a romantic retreat, you’ll discover the ideal cruise to match your March vacation dreams.

Top Cruises for March

When you’re planning your March getaway, selecting the right cruise can be as refreshing as the ocean breeze. I’ve spent hours researching and have narrowed down my list to the absolute best cruises that promise sunshine and adventure.

For those who dream of sapphire waters and palm-fringed beaches, Caribbean Cruises are at the top of the heap. You can expect stops at idyllic islands like Barbados and the Bahamas, where the sun is your constant companion. The weather is generally in your favor during March, with clear skies and warm temperatures. Expect a range of on-board activities, from poolside lounging to live entertainment.

If you’re enamored by culture and history, a European river cruise might be your perfect match. Cruises down the Danube or Rhine rivers offer an intimate experience with stops in charming cities and majestic landscapes. Spring blooms bring life to these storied routes with bursts of colors and mild weather for those onshore excursions.

But March isn’t just about the warmth; it’s also the tail end of the Antarctic Cruise Season . If you’re looking for an out-of-the-box experience, visiting the frozen continent as the chill starts to thaw is a unique choice. Wildlife, including penguins and whales, are active during this period, offering unparalleled sights for the intrepid traveler.

  • Stop by islands like Barbados and Bahamas
  • Wide range of onboard activities
  • Traverse historical rivers like the Danube and Rhine
  • Explore charming cities and enjoy spring colors
  • Visit the thawing continent
  • Observe active wildlife like penguins and whales

And let’s not forget the Pacific which offers a different kind of tranquility. Cruises in this region often include stops in Hawaii or Tahiti, providing a perfect blend of cultural experiences and beach relaxation. The weather is typically warm but not excessively so, making it ideal for those who prefer a more temperate climate.

Whether you sail into the sunset aboard a Caribbean liner or meander through Europe’s heart via its rivers, March cruises cater to your craving for sun, sea, and sights. The promise of waking up to a new destination each day is indeed the icing on the cruise cake.

Caribbean Getaways

When it comes to cruising in March, Caribbean Getaways top the list for their sun-kissed beaches and azure waters. Year-round sunshine makes the Caribbean an excellent choice for travelers looking to escape colder climates. I’ve explored several cruises that ply these tropical waters, and I’m thrilled to share my highlights.

For starters, the Eastern Caribbean routes often feature ports like St. Maarten, the Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico. These destinations dazzle with white-sand beaches, historic forts, and vibrant local markets. While shopping in Philipsburg or snorkeling in the clear waters of St. John, you’ll find endless activities to enjoy.

Western Caribbean cruises tend to include stops in Cozumel, Mexico, and Grand Cayman. I’ve experienced firsthand the joy of swimming with dolphins in Cozumel and the marvel of stingray encounters in the shallow waters of Stingray City. The ancient Mayan ruins in Tulum are just a short trip from the Cozumel port, offering a blend of culture and history amid your relaxing getaway.

Below are some of the top Caribbean cruises for March, which combine excellent weather, superb amenities, and immersive excursions:

  • Royal Caribbean International : Impressive ships with a multitude of onboard activities
  • Carnival Cruise Line : Known for its festive atmosphere and family-friendly fun
  • Norwegian Cruise Line : Boasts freestyle cruising with a focus on flexibility and freedom
  • Celebrity Cruises : Offers a more upscale experience with fine dining and sophisticated onboard experiences

Keep in mind that last-minute deals can pop up, making luxury cruises more affordable than you might expect. Additionally, many lines offer special themed cruises during this time, ranging from culinary explorations to jazz-filled evenings, ensuring that every traveller finds their perfect match in the Caribbean seas.

European River Cruises

If you’re yearning for a serene escape through the heart of Europe, European River Cruises offer just that in March. The season casts a unique charm on rivers like the Danube, Rhine, and Seine. My experiences gliding past the blooming landscapes and historic cities have been nothing short of magical.

March is an enticing time for river cruising because the crowds are thinner and the views of early spring give a fresh perspective of Europe’s beauty. Many cruisers are drawn to the fabled tulip cruises in the Netherlands and Belgium , which are in full swing during this period. Picture this: you’re meandering through waterways surrounded by fields of vibrant tulips and quaint windmills.

The Danube River offers a tapestry of cultural highlights, from the architectural wonders of Vienna to the enchanting cobbled streets of Budapest. A cruise along the Danube in March delivers a blend of indoor and outdoor experiences as you explore Gothic cathedrals or soak in thermal baths.

For those who favor fairy tales, the Rhine boasts castles perched atop rolling hillsides and myths woven into every winding turn. Ships usually navigate between Amsterdam and Basel, providing access to the iconic Black Forest and the storied Lorelei rock.

Beyond the scenery, European river cruises are renowned for their luxurious amenities and personalized service . From onboard gourmet dining showcasing regional cuisines to well-appointed staterooms with panoramic views, these cruises cater to your desire for comfort and elegance. Don’t forget to indulge in the wide range of onshore excursions that deep dive into Europe’s rich history and culture.

When considering a European river cruise, it’s wise to look into the line’s itineraries and excursions that can enrich your journey. Companies like Viking River Cruises, AmaWaterways, and Uniworld offer a variety of routes tailored to different interests, whether it’s wine-tasting in France or tracing the footsteps of classical composers. Keep an eye out for early-booking discounts or special educational programs that often accompany these cruises, making the trip as enriching as it is enjoyable.

Family-Friendly Cruises

When considering a vacation that caters to all ages, family-friendly cruises in March offer an array of engaging activities and experiences to keep everyone entertained. Choosing the right cruise line is crucial, as some go the extra mile to ensure their youngest guests are as valued as adults.

Disney Cruise Line stands out with its trademark character experiences and family-oriented entertainment. Disney’s ships feature themed dining rooms, Broadway-caliber shows, and deck parties that captivate both children and adults. I’ve found that their private island, Castaway Cay, is a tropical haven where families can enjoy a perfect day of adventure and relaxation.

Another line that caters to families is Royal Caribbean . Not only do they boast an impressive fleet of ships complete with ice skating rinks, surf simulators, and zip lines, they also offer the award-winning Adventure Ocean program. This program provides educational and fun experiences tailored for different age groups, ensuring that kids have a blast while parents get some well-deserved downtime.

For those looking for a blend of education and play, Carnival Cruise Line offers their Camp Ocean program with marine-themed activities, helping kids learn about the wonders of the sea while making new friends onboard. Teens aren’t left out either, as many ships have dedicated clubs with video games, dance parties, and movie nights.

When booking your March getaway, don’t forget to check out itineraries. The Caribbean is a popular destination for its warm weather and crystal-clear waters. However, if you’re looking to mix things up, consider a family cruise to the Mexican Riviera or the Canary Islands for a taste of diverse cultures and landscapes. It’s important to review the specific amenities and programs available on each ship to ensure they align with your family’s interests and needs.

Keep in mind that during spring break season, cruises can fill up quickly. It’s wise to book early, not only to guarantee your spot but to take advantage of early-booking discounts . With a bit of planning, your family cruise in March can be a memorable adventure that offers something for every member of the family.

Romantic Retreats

When love is in the air, and you’re seeking that perfect escape with your significant other, a cruise in March can be the idyllic setting for romance. Not only is the weather starting to warm up, but you’ll also beat the summer vacation crowds, giving you and your partner more intimate moments together. Look no further than luxury cruise lines like Viking Ocean Cruises, Azamara, or Crystal Cruises for a truly romantic getaway on the high seas.

These cruise lines stand out for their Adults-Only Atmosphere and Personalized Service . Aboard, you’ll find tranquil spas, fine dining with gourmet menus, and staterooms designed with couples in mind. Picture yourself indulging in a couples’ massage or enjoying a private balcony dinner as you sail into the sunset.

Here’s what makes these cruises a top choice for romantic retreats:

  • Private Excursions : Tailor-made tours for two allow you to explore ports without the bustle of larger tour groups.
  • Enrichment Programs : Wine tastings, cooking classes, and dance lessons offer unique bonding experiences.
  • Elegant Accommodations : Rooms with ocean views and private verandas set the stage for unforgettable mornings and evenings together.

For those moments when you want to mingle with other couples, there’s a variety of onboard entertainment and activities to choose from. Enjoy a Broadway-style show, live music at various lounges, or a moonlit walk on the deck.

March also comes with its share of exclusive itineraries. Perhaps a Mediterranean Cruise that calls to the romantic in us all with stops in quaint towns and historic cities, or maybe a leisurely South Pacific Voyage , charting a course to some of the most secluded and romantic islands in the world.

Advance Reservations are a must to ensure the cruise that fits your romantic vision is available. Due to their popularity and the special amenities they offer, these romantic cruises tend to book quickly. Don’t wait too long to secure your haven of love on the open seas.

March presents an incredible opportunity to explore the seas and find the perfect cruise experience. Whether you’re yearning for a Caribbean adventure, a cultural European river journey, or a special romantic escape, there’s a cruise out there that’s tailor-made for your desires. I’ve shared my top picks for luxury and intimacy at sea, and remember, booking early is your best bet for snagging a spot on these sought-after voyages. Here’s to smooth sailing and unforgettable memories on your next March cruise!

Can You Take Days Off Without Pto?

Yes, by using holidays, weekends and unpaid time for vacation.

By Robert Schrader | Published on April 19, 2024

For those who prioritize adventure in their lives, no amount of exploration is enough. As the year progresses, travel-lovers might wish they had more paid time off while asking themselves, "Can you take days off without PTO?" For some, this is a key question because of the sheer number of items they hope to check off their bucket lists. Others want to be able to hit the road — or the open sea — without depleting days they need for family holidays such as Thanksgiving. Read on for strategies to maximize your travel experiences without depleting your vacation time.

The Great Wall of China, Beijing

How Much Unpaid Time Off Can I Take?

How much time you can take off work depends not only on your company and the terms of your employment but also on the needs of your team and the demands of your job. If you're an accountant, taking unpaid time off might be a taller order in March than it is after tax day has passed. Likewise, if you work on a small team and have a colleague out on leave, you might not be able to take unpaid time off at all. Some jobs may also let you work on a company holiday and use that time off on another date that fits better into your vacation plans.

When you ask, "Can you take days off without PTO?" the answer isn't always a clear-cut "yes" or "no." It could be that your unpaid time off is conditional. Perhaps you'll need to finish a project before you go, make yourself available for a virtual presentation or be willing to answer client emails if the volume becomes too much for your co-workers. Finally, your supervisor will probably consider how much time you've had off before granting your request. If you've been absent a lot (whether due to an illness, childcare responsibilities or for bereavement), it might be more difficult to get time off.

Leverage Long Weekends And Holidays

One of the best travel tips, regardless of whether you take paid or unpaid time off, is to always leverage weekends and holidays. For example, let's say your job gives you Good Friday and the Monday after Easter off. By adding a day or two on either side of this window (whether paid or unpaid), you can give yourself a vacation of up to a week in length, even though you're only taking off a few days. This can be valuable if there's a limit to the number of days you can take off at any one time.

If you cannot take unpaid time off, you might still be able to take a short trip. There are plenty of places within the United States (as well as in Canada and Mexico) where you can jet off on a Thursday or Friday and get back in time for work on Monday or Tuesday morning. Depending on your ability to overcome jet lag and what flights depart from the city you live in, you might even be able to swing a weekend trip to Europe.

You can also choose to take a cruise if you only have a long weekend or holiday weekend available. There are many cruises (especially to the Caribbean , Gulf of Mexico and Pacific Coast of Mexico) that last three or four days. Whether over a holiday weekend, such as Memorial Day or Labor Day, or because of a "summer Friday," this can be plenty of time to get away.

At the end of the day, enjoying a vacation without taking time off is not as insurmountable a challenge as it may seem, particularly if you can strike a balance between relaxation and productivity. Again, there's also the possibility of leveraging flexible work arrangements in order to convince your boss to agree to one of your proposals. That said, it's advisable to set clear boundaries about what work you will and won't do during your vacation.

Don't Forget About School And Other Jobs

If you're a solo traveler, planning your next trip can be simple. If you manage to get time off, whether paid or unpaid, you can make your trip happen. If you're traveling with a partner, however, or with school-age children, you'll need to do more preparation.

Can you take days off without PTO? This is a relatively easy question when referring to a job, but not always when you need to factor in children's school schedules. It usually makes sense to first plan trips around school holidays before you try to schedule your own time off from work. Some schools have stricter absence policies than others, so you'll want to check the regulations before you book flights and a sailing. It's easier to take a preschooler out of school than it is to yank a high school student away from their academics and activities (especially one with sports or other commitments), so take any kids' ages and responsibilities into consideration.

Pool Friends Hanging out and Tanning

Make A Short Trip Feel Long

Even if you won't be able to cruise for many days, there are ways to make your vacation feel longer. One great travel tip to improve relaxation is to fully disconnect. While you might decide to purchase an onboard Wi-Fi package in case of emergencies, turning off notifications (especially for emails and text-based services) will remove connections to many obligations from your life, allowing you to live more fully in the present moment.

You can also use the days of your cruise as an opportunity to enhance daily routines you need to stay focused and healthy at home. For example, while you might continue to wake up early on your cruise to exercise or meditate, you can also indulge in daytime naps whenever you feel like it, or have a cocktail — or two! — by the pool. Small indulgences taken steadily throughout your trip can make the travel experience feel like more of a break from the ordinary.

Choosing your destination carefully is also a travel tip that can help your vacation feel more relaxing. Picking an itinerary with more chill time and less sightseeing makes a big difference. Spending a few days on a beachy, island paradise — especially if you call on Perfect Day at CocoCay® and book an overwater cabana, where anything can be delivered to your lounge chair the moment you want it — can make you feel like you're halfway around the globe in the South Pacific instead of right off the coast of the mainland United States. In turn, booking a European cruise — with plenty of sightseeing and historical sites to explore — might make you feel accomplished but not any more refreshed than when you left home.

Even if you only end up having a few days at sea, that's plenty of time to find amazing adventures. From modifying routines and getting yourself into cruise mode to silencing distractions (especially those related to work) and being strategic about the destination you choose, the will to travel is often more important for an unforgettable experience than the particulars of the trip.

Your Next Getaway Is Closer Than You Think

As you browse cruise options, you might ask yourself "can you take days off without PTO?" Another travel tip to consider is taking partial days off or working during business hours on your cruise and having evenings free to dine, connect and celebrate with your partner or loved ones. Some jobs might even allow you to shift your hours when you're traveling, getting up early or working late in order to take advantage of time in cruise ports with your family or friends. This can be especially beneficial when you're working around school vacations and taking your own job requirements into consideration.

As a result, the answer to the question is "yes" in most cases. The key, no matter your circumstances, is being strategic — both in terms of using weekends and holidays to your advantage, as well as using your time wisely as you travel. Your next trip doesn't have to wait until next year.

Caribbean Cruise Ports Lead Segment Surge

T he Caribbean, the cruise industry’s largest deployment region, is driving its post-pandemic resurgence. Several regional destinations are reporting robust 2024 cruise arrivals following similarly positive results in 2023.

The region’s cruise ship surge lies behind a global passenger increase. A total of 31.7 million travelers cruised in 2023, according to the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA)’s 2024 State of the Cruise Industry report. The total represents a seven percent increase over pre-pandemic 2019.

Of that number according to CLIA, 44.2 percent of 2023 cruise passengers traveled to the Caribbean, Bahamas and Bermuda, far outpacing the 18.5 percent who sailed to the Mediterranean, the next-highest global region.

In all, 12.9 million cruise passengers traveled to the Caribbean, Bahamas and Bermuda in 2023, a 7.3 percent increase over 2019. “The Caribbean gained almost one million new cruise visitors in 2023 compared to 2019,” CLIA officials stated in the report.

The cruise growth trend is evident, said destination officials. The Bahamas will host 5.6 million cruise passengers at its Nassau Cruise Port in 2024, said Chester Cooper, minister of tourism.

The figure will exceed the 5.4 million the port hosted in pre-pandemic 2019, said Cooper. “We are about 40 percent higher on cruise passengers at the Nassau cruise port,” he said.

In Barbados, government officials say 392 cruise calls carrying 715,527 passengers are confirmed for the 2024 winter season. The figures represent an 18 percent increase compared with the 358 calls and 608,583 passengers hosted in 2023.

Overall, Barbados’ 2024 cruise passenger arrivals are poised to exceed its 2023 numbers, with 826,338 passengers expected to arrive at the country’s Bridgetown port this year, arriving on 338 calls. Last winter, Barbados hosted 661,635 passengers arriving on 373 calls, said Ian Gooding-Edghill, minister of tourism.

Curaçao Ports Authority (CPA) officials quoted in a Curaçao Chronicle article anticipates 300 cruise calls with an average occupancy of 90 percent in 2024. The ships will deliver 800,000 cruise passengers to the destination this year, a 13 percent increase over 2023 totals.

Cruising High

The dual-island nation of Antigua and Barbuda is also among the Caribbean’s 2024 cruise visitation leaders. The destination is expected to host 800,000 cruise ship visitors in 2024 according to government tourism officials quoted in a WICNews.com report.

On March 12, Antigua and Barbuda hosted 15,808 passengers aboard six cruise ships, a record for the dual-island destination. The vessels included ships from Costa Cruises, Princess Cruises, Royal Caribbean International and Aida Cruises and Sea Dream Yacht Club.

Antigua and Barbuda followed its record March with a five-ship day on April 1, as vessels from Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Princess Cruises, Celebrity Cruises and Emerald Cruises carrying 10,820 visitors called at the destination, according to government tourism officials.

Caribbean tourism officials attending last week’s Seatrade Cruise Global conference in Miami Beach detailed the cruise segment’s resurgence in their countries.

Edmund Bartlett, Jamaica’s tourism minister, said Royal Caribbean Group officials “reaffirmed their commitment to Jamaica,” during the conference, maintaining a target of 400,000 annual visitors at Jamaica’s Falmouth cruise port.

The country hosted 389,319 cruise passengers in 2023, a 29.7 percent increase compared with 2022.

Saying “Seatrade 2024 signaled the returning strength of the cruise sector,” Bartlett held discussions with Carnival Cruise Lines, Disney Cruise Line and Princess Cruises during the event.

The Jamaica minister also held “very positive” discussions with MSC Cruises officials regarding “their interest in forging a larger strategic partnership involving investment in local infrastructure.”

Regional Resurgence

Other Caribbean nations reporting recent cruise visitation growth include the Turks and Caicos, where Experience Turks and Caicos officials reported 98,161 cruise ship visitors in March, the year’s highest total.

The Dominican Republic’s cruise ports hosted 52 cruise ships in April said Atahualpa Paulino, northern regional director of tourism, in a DominicanToday.com report.

The higher 2024 Caribbean arrivals follow similar success across 2023. The twin-island federation of St. Kitts and Nevis hosted 774,512 cruise ship visitors in 2023, a 61 percent increase over the 481,077 arrivals in 2022.

British Virgin Islands Ports Authority (BVIPA) officials said the territory hosted 720,392 cruise ship visitors in 2023, a 110 percent increase over the 343, 571 visitors hosted in 2022. The 2023 total “also surpasses the highest recorded arrivals” of 699,105 passengers in 2016, according to BVIPA.

Significant room for growth remains for the Caribbean cruising despite the increased arrivals in 2023 and 2024.

St. Kitts and Nevis’ 2023 cruise arrivals growth still trails the 1,053,388 cruise visitors the destination hosted in 2019, according to statistics from Tourism Analytics.

Bermuda hosted 525,413 visitors on 183 cruise ship calls in 2023, up 30.5 percent and 11.6 percent respectively from 2022, according to the Bermuda Tourism Authority’s 2023 Visitors Arrivals Report. Yet the total still trails the 535,561 cruise visitors Bermuda hosted in 2019.

The Cayman Islands hosted 937,000 cruise ship visitors in 2023, according to Economics and Statistics office data quoted in a Cayman Compass article. The figure represents a year-over-year increase of 118.1 percent but is about half of the 2019 total of 1.83 million cruise visitors.

“We are seeing the huge [cruise] growth, but if we haven’t yet reached the numbers before COVID,” Hugo Clarinda, Curaçao’s deputy tourism director, said earlier this year.

The Caribbean nation hosted “around 700,000 cruise visitors” in 2023, said Clarinda. “We will surpass 800,000 for sure,” he predicted.  “Cruise continues to be important part of the mix [that] contributes to [our] economic impact.”

Heartbreaking video shows 20-year-old Levion Parker happily swimming in the ocean and fishing with his pals just a week before he drunkenly jumped off a Royal Caribbean cruise ship and was never seen again.

The TikTok video was posted by Parker’s friend, Kaleb Felty, on March 27 and shows Parker beaming on a boat off Florida and splashing around in the shallows.

At one point, a shirtless Parker holds up a fish he’d just caught. Another clip shows him fighting with a fish on his line as it darts under the boat before it cuts to Parker taking a dip in the sea.

Felty posted several other videos of Parker, including one of him hunting with a bow and arrow. In another video he dubbed a “typical Levion moment,” Parker feeds pelicans a fish out of his hands from a boat.

Parker’s pal also posted a slideshow of several photos of the two together, writing “I will see you again one way or another.”

Parker, of North Port, Florida, jumped off the 11th deck of the Liberty of the Seas around 4 a.m. on April 4, plummeting 200 feet into the Atlantic in front of his helpless brother and father while heading to Cuba and the Bahamas’ Grand Inagua Island, Florida officials said.

He had been drinking and had just gotten into an argument with his father, witnesses said.

“There was a lot of yelling, and the crew was alerted immediately,” cruise passenger Deborah Morrison told The Post.

“His family was horrified. Just beside themselves,” she added.

Royal Caribbean said it “immediately” launched search boats to look for the 20-year-old and alerted the Coast Guard, which later took over the search.

The boy’s stunned father, Francel Parker, told The Daily Sun he threw six life rings off the ship in hopes of saving his son before the massive vessel was able to come to a stop about 20 minutes later.

Five days later, The Coast Guard called off its search.

Francel Parker is demanding to know how his underage son was given alcohol on the four-day cruise.

However Royal Caribbean sources told The Daily Mail he could have purchased the booze offboard, where the drinking age is 18.

“We have a strict policy on underage drinking. We did not serve this guest on board,” the source told the outlet. “The ship was docked in the Dominican Republic that day, so we cannot speak to what guest did when he was off the ship.”
