Avoid this overpriced booking agent

Somak was recommended by my local travel agent as a price comparison to Abercrombie & Kent and although they advertise as a luxury travel company they appear to be just an overpriced booking agent. My very expensive, once-in-a-lifetime, luxury holiday was a safari, Vic Falls and beach holiday. The safari lodge was out of this world but I had been very specific about location, dates and standard of lodge; for the rest I assumed Somak were Africa travel experts (as per their website blurb) ‘crafting unforgettable escapes’ and offering ‘bespoke adventures’ and everything would be a similar luxury standard. I was left feeling absolutely ripped off with no meet & greet at any airport, budget local air lines for all air transfers and LHW hotels, which may be classed as 5-star but the room standard, level of service and overall experience nowhere near met the price charged by Somak (e.g. TUI were offering the same beach resort). Somak appeared to book everything that gave maximum profit for them rather than delivering the high-end luxury travel experience I thought I’d paid for so would absolutely not recommend this company. My complaint on return was met with ‘we will reply in 8 weeks as per ABTA rules’, which was a deadline they missed and final compensation offered was only 2% of the very high total holiday cost.

nhow Milano Hotel review: A visual masterpiece full of luxury comforts and modern magic

Blending the modern with luxurious comfort, the italian hotel is a cosmopolitan home-from home, with a breathtaking rooftop pool area.

Along with Paris, New York and London, Milan is one of the four pillars of the fashion world. The Italian city is where the big fashion houses such as Armani, Versace and Prada not only show their collections on the runways, but also have their entire headquarters there. 

Set in the heart of the trendy Tortona design district, the nhow Hotel Milano is luxurious whilst being innovative and modern. Rather than European, it feels like a concept hotel that would be right at home in LA or Tokyo, curated cleverly with art pieces and lighting that changes the aesthetic of its spaces like a chameleon when the sun goes down. If, like me, you like creating content to be the envy of social media, this is definitely the place to make some people jealous, as the whole space is visually exceptional.  

Before I had even got to the hotel, I knew I was in for something special for my stay. My taxi whisked me through an underground passage to the hotel entrance, which was flanked with a futuristic light installation along the walls that reminded me of something from Tron: Legacy or The Dark Knight film series. The lobby of the hotel is a fairground of fun, filled with artwork, vintage arcade games and retro popcorn machines. Transparent pink walls, modern chandeliers and even a Route 66 gas pump manage to form an eclectic yet cohesive mix that meant that every time I was in the lobby, my interest was pulled to something new. The hotel is a maximalist space with a really cool uniqueness to it. The bar, with its candy-coloured neon accents is also housed in the space, so the whole area has a buzz about it. You can chill out there and relax or enjoy some drinks later on, depending on your mood. Their restaurant is focused on haute Milan cuisine, but obviously their chefs put a twist on their dishes, giving you a bit of experimental flare to your meals.  

Up on the roof, the hotel’s strong aesthetic continues with their new rooftop space Vertigo that opened last year. Designed by Park Associati, it has a myriad of fun water features, including orange circular pools, and a glass bottomed infinity pool. As well as the gloriously fun pools, there is also a lounge, cocktail area and a solarium. The space comes alive at night, with luminous pillars of light. It’s once again another opportunity to grab some perfect holiday content. 

The strong colour game continues in the rooms and suites. Mixing fabrics and prints, every room has a distinct colour, such as 70s limes, fuchsias and oranges that even find their way into smaller touches such as the flowers on the table and in the artwork. Each room has an eclectic mix of modern and retro furniture, frosted glass and sheer coloured curtains that really cocoon you in your room, full of subtle glowing light. The rooms are indicative of the whole hotel, where every detail has been carefully curated. But they’ve also managed to design a calming space to relax in, which is just what I want from a hotel room. It also fits the hotel’s ethos of being a cosmopolitan home from home. 

It’s hard to get the balance of vibrant modern with being cozy and a place of welcome rest, but the nHow Milano Hotel manages this seamlessly. You can be tucked up in their super comfy beds in your beautiful, cosy room, admire some art in their regular exhibition space, or enjoy a party and have some fun on their rooftop or lobby and bar area. It’s picture-perfect, right down to the finest details.

Aug 25 2024, 9:37 am Grand Hotel Tremezzo is one of the best luxury hotels on the banks of Lake Como and this iconic property features in many TV shows and films. It has the most fantastic views imaginable from its rooms, bars, and restaurants, along with a wonderful pool that floats directly on the lake. Banana trees and flowers surround an additional pool behind the hotel, and an excellent Spa, with those same fantastic views across the waterfront, offers another fun jacuzzi-style Spa pool.

I’m not even sure whether I need to write a review of the Hotel Tremezzo. Just scroll through our photos, and you will see all you need to tempt you into staying at this five-star hotel. I will, however, expand on our experience at Grand Hotel Tremezzo for those of you who want to find out more.

Most visitors to Grand Hotel Tremezzo will fly into Milan and then transfer straight from the airport and directly to Lake Como (which takes between 1 and 2 hours, depending on the traffic). Grand Hotel Tremezzo is located quite far up Lake Como, so you can enjoy at least half an hour of lakeside views as you drive up the lake’s edge before your arrival.

As you drive up to Hotel Tremezzo, its glorious yellow classic facade towers above the road and the entrance. To get up to the main foyer, you have to take a glass elevator up two floors, and from the lobby, you can absorb those lake-side views.

The hotel decor is classic, with many red carpets, sofas, and roses. The foyer spreads back from the glass lift to an impressive staircase. Adjoining balconies showcase magnificent views. There are plenty of communal rooms on this floor, including the restaurant and an indoor bar with flamboyant multicolored sofas. The bar and main restaurant on this floor continues the classic style with marble floors, rattan, and metal seats and tables.

The most modern areas of the hotel include the Spa and restaurant, which are one floor down from the foyer, and their excellent modernized suites. The Spa has slate flooring and luxury loungers surrounding a stylish pool. The “L’Escale Trattoria & Wine Bar,” located on the same floor, also has a modern finish with slate flooring and a modern bar and lighting. Floor-to-ceiling glass windows and terraces throughout this floor make the most of the incredible views. At night, this floor is lit by particularly lovely candles.

This hotel is all about the views and the pools; there were three lovely pools here. There’s a floating waterfront pool in front of the hotel with a beach club that serves lunch and drinks. For relaxing, a strip of sand on the lakeside is packed with loungers meticulously placed to take in the best views.

Behind the hotel is a pool surrounded by banana trees, flowers, and a cafe. This pool also had lovely views of the lake as it is elevated into the mountain, so it sits above the lake.

The final pool is the Spa pool, which is saved mainly for adults. It is located underneath the bar, with loungers looking at the view and a small indoor swimming area and outdoor jacuzzi.

We stayed in a Prestige Room with a lake view, which was classic in style and had an excellent view of the lake. If your budget stretches, the rooms to pick are the suites with terraces. Built into the top of the hotel, these suites are modern, with jaw-dropping views of the lake and terraces large enough to lounge on or even have a Jacuzzi.

The main “La Terrazza” restaurant is where you eat breakfast and where you will probably want to have dinner if you want to have the gourmet option. The views from this restaurant are nothing short of spectacular, and this offers a beautiful view to enjoy your buffet in the morning.

The other restaurant at the hotel for evening dining is the “L’Escale Trattoria & Wine Bar.” This was my favorite. It is set directly under La Terrazza, which has the same great views and farm-to-table cuisine. We had beautiful fish, seafood, and pasta cooked with exquisite sauces in a cave-like setting with an authentic arched ceiling. The food was simple in design but so very tasty.

The bar area is on the opposite side of the hotel to the restaurants and offers those same fabulous views and drinks on candlelit tables. Some evenings, a live musician played hits with a piano and saxophone. On other evenings music was piped in. Every evening, the view was amazing.

Lake Como has a very different vibe from Milan. It’s relaxing and a wonderful place to unwind. Most guests at Hotel Tremezzo spent their days touring the lake on boats or just lying by the two pools. You can walk along the waterfront on either side of the hotel, and the lakeside village that trails along the road is tranquil. The main activity at Hotel Tremezzo is poolside relaxation followed by evening dining, where people put on their best dresses, drink,he views. W and dine with te even saw a woman in her wedding dress dining in the gourmet restaurant. Relax in an unmatched setting at Grand Hotel Tremezzo. That’s what staying here is all about.
