How to choose the right free walking tour in Paris for you

When picking a tour, you want to take three factors into consideration – your time, your money and you yourself (or your group).

1 – Your Time Planning what you do in Paris is greatly affected by the number of days you have in the city. The average tourist spends only three nights in Paris. Most overseas visitors spend 4 to 5 nights. Fitting all of Paris’ world-known attractions into 3 to 5 days is not easy! Hiring a guide can help you optimize your time.

2 – Your Money Paris can be expensive to be sure, but many of the city’s highlights are free (Notre Dame, the view from Montmartre, and the special feeling on Pont des Artes to name three). The five-star restaurant can set you back a week’s pay and more – but a sandwich from the local bakery can be a memorable experience. Discover Walks runs the gambit from the very economical free walking tours of Paris , to our flagship “Best Day Ever” customized premium tour of Paris . Our free tours have all of our love of Paris – we don’t hold anything back. If you choose a private tour instead, with us at Discover Walks money will buy you time, personalized service and door-to-door attention.

3- And You!

You and your travel companions are the most important ingredient. We have guests who spend three days in the Louvre and Orsay and one day with Discover Walks and feel they got the best of Paris. Other guests never go inside a museum, they take all seven of our neighborhood tours and feel they really know Paris (and are ready to move here).

If this is your first trip to Paris, we have many ways for you to get the most out of your visit. If you have been to Paris several times, we have created tours that take you off the tourist path, to see more of the real Paris.

Guided Walking Tours Offer the Best Views of Paris

The less time you have in Paris, the more you will want your guide to take you to the best views. Panoramic views help you understand the city better. And they leave you with a lasting impression to take home with you.

One-Day Visit.

We advise you to read below even if you are spending more than one day in Paris, as we give suggestions that you may want to put to use.

High Budget: We have many guests who come from London just for the day. They arrive at Gare Nord train station at 9:30 in the morning and they leave after dinner. Most often, they book our Best Day Ever Tour .

Our guide meets them at the train station and is with them all day as we sweep through Paris in grand style – if they want, we get them reservations for dinner someplace special (the most popular right now is Restaurant Jules Verne at the top of the Eiffel Tower – great dinner and a view that no one forgets.)

Mid/Low Budget: Many other guests with only one day want to get a feel of the city. We recommend first doing a neighborhood tour like our Right Bank Landmarks Tour . In 90 minutes the Discover Walks guide has them feeling like a Parisian, helps them find a good local bistro for lunch.

These guests often stroll past a couple of iconic sites. No need to go inside, from the outside you get a great sense for Notre Dame, the Eiffel Tower, or the Louvre museum. For the Orsay, Rodin, and Picasso museums. You might end the day having dinner in trendy Marais or one the many places in Montorgueil or in St. Germain des prés.

If you ‘need’ the top of the Eiffel Tower, Orsay, or the Louvre, then we recommend you buy ‘skip-the-line’ tickets at least 30 days in advance. We have many of these special tickets as part of our tours and as a service with our private tour guests.

Two or More Day Visit With two or more full days in Paris, you can start to add things that you have a personality affinity for, alongside the must-sees. First time to Paris? Look at the major landmarks. Been here before? Explore Paris more in-depth, and explore some off-the-beaten-track experiences. Where to start?

To enjoy Paris from the start, to get a feel for the city and to become comfortable, we recommend doing a Discover Walks tour on your first day. Your Discover Walks guide will treat you like an invited guest, like a friend who is visiting our city.

During your time with us, we will not only tell you what you are seeing, we can also explain why things are the way they are in Paris. Our most popular tours are our Food Tour , Best Day Ever, and our neighborhood Private Tours.

Our most popular free walking tour is Montmartre. But all our tours get rave reviews. Perhaps because our guides are all true locals, with a passion for our home city.

We suggest you pick a tour that covers something that interests you – Right Bank (for major landmarks and good orientation), Trendy Marais (to see old Paris Mansions, quaint streets and trendy new Paris), Notre Dame and Left Bank (blend of students, art and bohemian life), St. Germain (the river, old money, art and Hemmingway) and Hidden Gems (the surprising gems in the neighborhood next to the Louvre).

Why Discover Walks as Your Guide?

More than two-thirds of the people who take one tour with Discover Walks decide to take a second tour – and very often a third and a fourth as well. We are thrilled by this, as visitors choose Discover Walks for spending their precious time in Paris. We love Paris. Showing our city to you is a real treat for us. We will treat you the best that we know.

Paris Tour Guide - Leo K.

Hi there! My nickname is Leo, I've been a tour guide in Paris and France for 6 years and I love my job and meeting people from all over the world to share my passion with! My speciality is the museum of catacombs, which is a very unique site. I also do tours of the historical crimes and legends of Paris, the Eiffel Tower, Seine river cruise, Chartres and its cathedral, the cemetery of Père Lachaise, Le Marais and much more.

Paris Tour Guide - Ellen L.

I am an experienced tour guide and a friendly Franco-American who has lived in Paris for 33 years. Travelers feel comfortable with me due to my fluency in both English & French. I am a trained historian and my tours are well researched, well documented and well presented on high tech material (tablet), a multi-media experience using archival photos, video footage (and when appropriate sound). My tours are not for the first time traveler - I could never compete with the big bucket tours that go to the Eiffel Tower. Instead, I market tours for those who have already seen the sights and want to see Paris beyond the monuments, the real Paris with its private courtyards, quiet cobblestoned streets & hidden monuments that only locals know.

Let's discover at the same time Paris history/geography and the best places to have lunch /dinner / cocktails and where to buy tasty food.

Paris Tour Guide - Naomi C.

I have been living and working in Paris for 15+ years. I love my city and love sharing its vibrant art scene with my guests. Originally, I studied Art and Philosophy at Concordia University, Montreal and received a Master 2 / Diplôme des Beaux-Arts de l'ESADHaR, Le Havre, France. As well as being a tour guide I am a practicing artist. I spent the first years of my life in Paris going to the museum every weekend to sketch the sculptures and paintings. I have over 10 years of experience working in the arts with artists, and galleries, as an artist and curator. I started out running an artist-run center and love making the experience of interacting with art accessible and fun. As a member of the art community, I am more than excited to share with you an insider's view of the Paris vibrant art scene. Let me show you how this city continues to inspire me every day. Don't hesitate to send me a message and tell me what kinda art you like! So, I can tailor the visit to your interest!

Paris Tour Guide - Deniz K.

Hello travelling foodies, Deniz here! My passion for cooking brought me to Paris almost 20 years ago, where I trained as a chef at Le Cordon Bleu. After working in top kitchens and pastry labs for many years, I have discovered the food nerd in me alongside a new passion for food research which led me to pursue a master’s degree in food studies. These experiences have given me a deep understanding of cultural, geographic and historical forces that shape recipes, food traditions and cuisines which I love sharing with others on my tours. I lead gastronomic adventures through bustling markets, specialty food stores, historic wine cellars, iconic Parisian institutions as well as hidden gems off the beaten path. I believe that tasting authentic flavors and learning about the stories behind them is the best way to appreciate the rich diversity of any culture. It will be an immense joy to share my knowledge and passion for food and wine with you through your Parisian food journey.

Paris Tour Guide - Fernanda C.

Fernanda C.

“i got a lot of my passion to study and to share knowledge from both my parents who are professors. and when i say to share, i really mean a communication to connect, to exchange, where i not only pass information, but also listen and learn. it’s very important for me to create a comfortable atmosphere for everyone. to learn should be a moment of expansion, growth and therefore happiness and pleasure. that is no such thing as “silly questions”, the most important thing is to be curious, to stay sincere with yourself about the unknown, so we can together find the answers. there is no better feeling that knowing that you helped someone initiate or develop him/herself to the art world with your “push”. i fell in love with art history many years ago, even before my graduation, for me, it’s the nicest way to understand human society. we study the past, so we can live better in the present and construct together a finer future.”                                                                                                                                  , popular paris private tours.

“ Fabulous morning with Jill in Montmartre - highly recommend ”

Jill’s tour was the highlight of my 3 day stay in Paris! Her enthusiasm and knowledge of the neighborhood’s history, culture and people are mind-blogging. She showed me places I could have never discovered on my own, each with its own captivating story. Jill also gave me good tips about places such as “the best baguette”, wine stores, cheese in the neighborhood. Jill really makes you feel like you belong there and makes you fall in love with Montmartre. I had such a memorable experience that I just didn’t want the tour to end!

Ruxandra Z.

Thank you very much, Ruxandra Z.

“We protest against the erection of this useless and monstrous Eiffel Tower” was actually written in reaction to France’s most iconic monument in 1894. People were actually outraged by how ugly it was. Today, this 1,063-foot iron lattice tower still stands and attracts 7,000,000 visitors each year.

The long lines can be intimidating, and a visit is considered an all-day event. However, with our wide range of privileged access tours, Seine cruises, and family tours, we are sure to have something that fits your needs. There are two types of tourists! Those who stand in line and those who don’t. Which do you want to be?

1. Privileged Access Eiffel Tour at Night Tour with River Seine Cruise

People posing at the top of the Eiffel tower at night

Our Privileged Access Eiffel Tower Night Tour is a romantic evening without the lines. The tour starts at dusk with a boat ride on the Seine.

As the sun descends, the Eiffel Tower lights up and sparkles. Enjoy this magnificent sight with a glass of champagne and then climb the tower and witness amazing views of the city lit up at night.

2. Eiffel Tower Climbing Tour with Summit Access

Looking for a budget-friendly tour of the Eiffel Tower summit that’s ideal for active people? This guided climb of France’s most famous landmark gives you the chance to live that dream. You’ll climb the 674 steps to the tower’s second floor as your local guide tells you the story of its remarkable construction and troubled early history before taking the elevator to the summit for a well-earned rest and a truly remarkable view of Paris. Enjoy!

The Catacombs are a labyrinth that can only be seen a few months of the year, which is why lines to get in can be up to 5 hours long. Although the Catacombs are hundreds of miles long, only one mile is open to the public. Tickets sell out months in advance, but our tours come with skip-the-line access and privileged access to a number of chambers usually closed to the public.

1. Paris Catacombs Tour with Secret Rooms & Privileged Access

Why are skeletons stacked up in intricate designs below Paris? Where did these skeletons come from? Why are there 6,000,000 of them? Discover one of the great mysteries of Paris without spending long hours waiting outside on a Paris Catacombs tour .

If you’re looking for amazing food, Paris is one of the best places to visit. There are more Michelin restaurants in this city than in any other city on Earth, and a local food tour is a fantastic way to experience Paris’ local food scene.

1. Le Marais Local Food Tour (Incredible Deal!)

Paris Food Tour Cheese Plate

Le Marais is the nerve center of gastronomical delights, which is why our Le Marais food tour is one of our most popular experiences. It’s also one of the only food tours in Paris to include oysters and a sit-down dinner! Enjoy a walking tour of the melting pot that is Le Marais, Normandy oysters and champagne, and falafel street food in the Jewish Quarter.

The Best Private Tours of Musée d’Orsay

When people think of Paris, they tend to think of the Louvre and Eiffel Tower, and for good reason. Both attractions are epic! That said, the Musée d’Orsay would be the number one museum in almost any other city on Earth if it wasn’t in Paris.

1. Private Musée d’Orsay Tour with Skip-the-Line Tickets

paris tours by locals

While taking a private tour of any museum is a luxury, a private tour of Musée d’Orsay is even more amazing. Why? The museum doesn’t get the same crowds as the Louvre, and the paintings demand an explanation. They are all very beautiful and recognizable, but Impressionism is best explained through a lens into the artist’s life—something that a local tour guide does best in an intimate experience like a private tour. See the tour itinerary, price, and description.

1. Castles and Wine Tastings in the Loire Valley Day Trip

paris tours by locals

One of my favorite things to do in Europe is explore the countryside. This is because the architecture is amazing, and the agriculture is heavily focused on wine, which together makes for a beautiful experience. I also love having countryside lunches. They tend to be hearty, warm, and full of wine!

The Loire Valley is famous for castles and amazing dry white wines.

Our day trip to the Loire Valley not only explores an amazing castle but also includes a stop at a vineyard for a wine tasting. It will make for an incredible memory you will hold dear for the rest of your days!

2. Pay Tribute To D-Day at Normandy Beach

omaha beach les braves

From “Saving Private Ryan” to stories from our ancestors, Normandy is famous for the great sacrifices of brave men in the face of tyranny. Today, you can visit different beaches from Omaha to Pointe du Hoc to pay respects. The beaches of Normandy, where World War II was viciously fought, have been kept as it was, down to bullet holes, craters, and cannon shells.

Our Normandy day trip of D-Day landing beaches visits Omaha Beach, Utah Beach, Pointe du Hoc, and even a Cider brewery—the region’s specialty. This day trip is most definitely long—14 hours in total—but if you have an extra day and are passionate about WWII, it’s well worth the time.

3. Explore the Champagne Region on a Day Trip

paris tours by locals

Should you be looking for a day trip to remember—and you’re a fan of champagne—then a trip to the Champagne region is a must. The French countryside is waiting to take you on a culinary journey from wine cellars to champagne houses and a tasty spot for lunch.

This tour includes stops in the cities of Reims and Épernay, where you can see the famous Reims cathedral and explore Dom Perignon’s final resting place in the Benedictine monastery in Épernay. Your day in the countryside will be unforgettable.

Is it worth it to get a tour guide, though?

' data-src=

November 8, 2022

We might be biased, but it really is. You can either wander these amazing locations or monuments and not really know what’s so significant (or that you just passed the first painting by a world-famous painter), or you can learn so many incredible details and stories about these places and art. Tour guides truly do elevate your experience and make it more memorable.

Hello Brie, yeah, that makes sense. I also hate getting lost 😀 I have been looking around on your tours, and it seems that they are not customizable? Something like this https://gowithguide.com/france/paris

December 28, 2022

Our private tours can be customized within the museum or locations it already includes. So for instance, if you want more time in the Greek sculptures than in a room of impressionism, just let your guide know.

Where to stay in Paris: 9 of the city’s best areas

Choose from our pick of the best areas to stay in Paris, from beautiful Belleville to poppin’ Pigalle. Sleep well!

One trip barely scratches the surface of what this cosmopolitan capital has to offer, but that’s why you should come back, over and over again. But the best way to get what you want out of Paris is choosing the right place to stay – each district offers something a little different.

The team over at Time Out Paris have put together this ultimate guide to where to stay in Paris, from the foodie haven of Charonne to the bougie shopping street of Tuileries. Whatever your vibe, Paris has something for you, so choose one of its fabulous arrondissements and let us do the rest. Here’s where to stay in Paris (and what to eat, drink and do when you’re there too). À bientôt!

Where to stay in Paris

1.  saint-germain-des-prés.

Saint-Germain-des-Prés

Best for:  those who buy more books than they read

Beautiful and chic and New Wave at heart, Saint-Germain-des-Prés has recently acquired a new charm: the beating heart of the 6th arrondissement has become cool – without forgetting to remain bourgeois. Some highly popular new spots have opened there with great fanfare, such as the giant Cravan cocktail bar , the festive Grain(s) wine bar , the literary coffee shop Maison Fleuret  or the Pamela Club , which brings a bit of madness to this sometimes overly polite corner. All this is in addition to the district’s classic institutions; Le Bon Marché , the Luxembourg Gardens, its bookshops and its must-visit cafés. When it comes to hotels, there are plenty to choose from. Take a look at the Hôtel des Académies et des Arts , the brand new Hôtel des Grands Voyageurs or the chic Villa-des-Prés .

2.  Montmartre

Montmartre

Best for  romantics (and the Paris you’ve always dreamed of)

Streets lined with retro cafés, ivy-clad apartment buildings and the dazzling white domes of the Sacré-Cœur: Montmartre is most people’s idea of what Paris is really like. So why not indulge in the dream? This northern neighbourhood has retained its  enchanting village feel thanks to its steep hills, charming multi-coloured houses and tiny old-world shops. Wander around spotting locations from ‘Amélie’, visit the final resting places of Degas and Zola in the Cimetière Montmartre , and take in the dreamy rose gardens of the 17th-century  Musée de Montmartre . There are plenty of quality restaurants ( Sushi Shunei , A.Léa , Chez Eugène ), all within easy reach of the wild nightlife of the indefatigable Pigalle. Our favourite place to sleep is undoubtedly the Hôtel Particulier Montmartre (if you’re not staying there, at least drop by the Très Particulier , its secret bar), but the Ballu is a must for those on a tighter budget.

3.  Pigalle

Pigalle

Best for: those who work odd hours

Pigalle is so cool that every other district in Paris probably hates it. He’s your mate who goes out until late (in his defence, there’s literally only one step from the terrace of the Mansart to the door of the club le Carmen) but stays cool for a cinematic day out at the Musée de la Vie Romantique or the Musée Gustave Moreau . He’ll tell you that you can find everything you need in his long Rue des Martyrs, and he’ll be right. But we recommend that you go shopping in the surrounding streets, which are full of crazy bakeries ( Norma , Léonie , Babka Zana , Mamiche ...), florists that look like museums ( Debeaulieu ) and second-hand clothes shops ( Mamie Blue ). For a good night’s sleep, go to L’Amour , aptly named, or Pigalle. But if you’re more into yoga than hangovers, head to Hoy .

4.  The Marais

The Marais

Best for  cool kids with big pockets

Here you are in the centre of Paris, a paradise of galleries, thrift shops, designer boutiques and trendy cafés. A cultural hub, the Marais is home to some of the most cutting-edge institutions, from the Lafayette Anticipations contemporary art centre to the MEP ( Maison Européenne de la Photographie ). Good restaurants abound, too, from the cheeky Marché des Enfants-Rouges to the hype of Carboni’s and the gourmet flair of Datil . You’ll even find two of our favourite bouclards: the Bistrot des Tournelles  and the Grande Brasserie . Of course, all this comes at a price, and quality hotels in the area are a little more expensive than elsewhere. If you have the budget, nothing beats the imperial serenity of the confidential Cour des Vosges , on the square of the same name. For something a little more under the radar, the Sinner will delight couples in search of intimacy (and more, if you like).

5.  Belleville

Belleville

Best for an  urban art scene and some serious views

Belleville is on top (of the hill). A favourite spot for locals when it’s time for a drink, you’re a long way from the picture-postcard Paris, and yet it’s at the junction of its two main streets that you’ll find one of the most surprising views of the capital. Belleville comes from ‘beautiful view’ (as evidenced by its belvedere), and the whole of Paris has views of it and its many attractions. Here you’ll find Chinatown, with its thousand and one bouis-bouis (cafés, like the fabulous  Mian Guan ) and karaoke bars, not to mention a host of top-notch eateries, such as the galloping Cheval d’Or , and bistros that are half-franchouilles and half-branchouilles ( Café des Délices , Paloma ). It would be Midnight in Paris if it had been directed by Gaspar Noé, from the depths of his billiard and cocktail bars, including the highly recommendable Combat and Kissproof . If it’s a good idea, it’s also because its accommodation options are ultra-cheap (no, really), like the Babel hotel .

6.  Charonne

Charonne

Best for:  foodies ready to eat (and eat, and eat)

You could almost create a Time Out Charonne so many dining options pile up around the 11th metro station, and all of them would be fabulous. Leading the way, chef Adrien Cachot’s Vaisseau , just named restaurant of the year at the Time Out Food & Drink Awards, is surrounded by a fleet of timeless spots; Clamato , Septime , Bistrot Paul Bert ... And to do your own cooking, you’re here equidistant from two of the best markets in Paris: the one on Place de la Bastille and the one on Place d’Aligre, both with a great atmosphere for strolling come Sunday. To extend your stroll, the Père Lachaise cemetery is nearby. For hotels, look no further than Maison Bréguet in  Place de la Bastille   or Hôtel Paradiso in Place de la Nation.

7.  Tuileries

Tuileries

Best for: big budgets and big occasions

If you’re Bella Hadid and you’re spending three days in Paris, Tuileries is the place. Head down to the Place de la Concorde, off the Rue de Rivoli and the Jardin des Tuileries – much more chic than the Champs-Élysées if you’ve got money to spend. This is the palace life, and there’s no shortage of choice: from the single-storey Crillon on Place de la Concorde to the Meurice a little further along under the arcades, luxury hotels line up like the pearls on your necklace along the Tuileries.

Even more expensive, Place Vendôme and its luxury boutiques are just a stone’s throw away, while at the end of the garden, the Bourse de Commerce and its blockbuster exhibitions are sure to make the neighbouring Louvre jealous. When it comes to eating, you’ll be well served by the city’s best Japanese restaurants, from Kodawari and Echizen Ramen to Toraya ’s goldsmith bentos and pastries.

8.  Strasbourg Saint-Denis

Strasbourg Saint-Denis

Best for: playing it like a trendy Parisian

If you want to play it like an insider, move to SSD. You’ve been warned: if you choose this district, it’s more for its Turkish restaurants, bars and cafés than for its monuments and museums (which are almost non-existent). But this is where youth is made, and where you’ll have the best chance of meeting new people.

Here, you can choose between the rockers at Chez Tony or the hip crowd at La Chope des Artistes . For after-dinner drinks, you can count on the burgers at Dogma or Dumbo , or the unmissable dürüms at Urfa . And if by any chance you feel the need for a bit of culture, the Porte Saint-Martin theatre has one of the best progs in the capital! Sleep is cheating, but the Grand Amour is a hotel unlike any other, and its hidden Book Bar will be the antechamber to your best evenings.

9.  Canal Saint-Martin

Canal Saint-Martin

Best for  basking in sunshine

With the first rays of sunshine, the cobblestones of the Canal Saint-Martin are transformed into an urban beach where the whole of Paris lazes around until late at night. So if you’re looking for a bit of holiday, you’ve come to the right place. Between République and Stalingrad, on either side of the Arletty footbridge that spans the canal (in homage to the actress in Hôtel du Nord), you'll find plenty to keep you busy all day. Coffee and croissants at Ten Belles , window-shopping at Centre Commercial , lunch at Sur Mer or sunrise at Ima Cantine ... In the evening, dinner at Early June is a must, before heading off to party at the not-to-be-missed Point Éphémère . If humour is your thing, the best comedy club, Paname , is just a stone’s throw away. The best hostel? Le Generator , perfect for those on a budget. If you’re looking for peace and quiet, choose the Bloom House and its superb swimming pool.
