Whether you’re celebrating 12 months of marital bliss or your 50th anniversary, marking the milestones as you continue your journey through life together is an annual excuse to make even more memories.

So forget presents. For travel lovers, true romance means hitting the road. Swap cufflinks for cultural connections and flowers for far-flung adventures with these wedding anniversary trip ideas inspired by traditional gifts.

wedding anniversary trip ideas - a wide-angle shot of Trinity College Library, Dublin

1 or 2 year(s) – paper: Dublin

You’re a year or two (depending which side of the Atlantic you live on) into the new chapter of your lives and so far, so good. The perk: you’ve made it to the grand customary gift status that is ‘paper’. But instead of an embossed journal or letter-writing set, why not treat yourselves to an experience that’s really worth writing home about?

Head to Dublin : This Unesco City of Literature is home to effortlessly romantic bookshops like the Winding Stair and Ulysses Rare Books , not to mention the beautiful Trinity College Library .

Alternative option: Go to Japan for shōji , rice-paper rolls and origami.

How to find ‘real’ traditional Irish music in Dublin

wedding anniversary trip ideas - a couple hold hands on a ranch in Texas.

3 years – leather

Cowboy carousing might not be the most romantic anniversary activity but hey – this ain’t your first rodeo. Mix things up for your third anniversary and lasso your loved one on a trip to Texas . Grab your hat, leather boots and bullwhip (oo-er) and get down and dusty on a bonafide dude ranch.

Although a real working ranch, Dixie Dude Ranch in cowboy capital Bandera offers chilled-out horse rides and massage therapy – and if that still sounds like thirsty work, Hill Country’s wineries will oblige.

Alternative option: Shop for leather slippers and bags in Marrakesh or sniff out Instagrammable tanneries in Fez, Morocco .

The best US dude ranches to live like a cowboy

Close up of blood oranges at a market in Sicily.

4 years – fruit: Sicily

Four years and things haven’t gone sour – time to reward yourselves! Put your zest foot forward on a trip to Sicily , where lemons and blood oranges grow like weeds thanks to the island’s volcanic soil and abundant sunshine. On long summer days, linger over limoncello, citrusy salads and lip-puckering granita.

Hide away in an agriturismo (farm stay) to walk among citrus and olive groves, enjoy home-cooked meals and practice charming your hosts – and each other, of course – in la dolce lingua .

Alternative option: Wine counts as one of your five-a-day... right? Keep telling yourself that as you sip a tipple while touring the vineyards of South Australia .

Sicily's most beautiful national parks and reserves

wedding anniversary trip ideas - A Maori wood carving in Rotorua, New Zealand.

5 years – wood: New Zealand

By this point in your lives, you’ve most likely laid roots. You may even be adding to your family tree. Admire whakairo – the Maori artform of carving wood, jade and bone – in New Zealand , where getting back to nature couldn’t be easier, even if there are toddlers in tow.

Geothermal Rotorua makes an ideal – if a little whiffy – base; after a day wandering around Redwoods Whakarewarewa Forest or visiting Whakarewarewa Village (complete with carved wooden buildings), chill out with a soak in the area’s natural hot springs.

Alternative option: Pursue your own fairy-tale romance in Germany’s Black Forest .

6 jaw-dropping places to stay in New Zealand

wedding anniversary trip ideas - A traveller poses at Machu Picchu with an alpaca.

7 years – wool: Peru

Feeling the seven-year itch? Not if you switch your sheep’s wool for the llama or alpaca variety. Stock up on some silky-smooth textiles in Peru – colourful socks, bobble hats and ponchos are the standard – and snuggle up with your other half as you admire the Andean landscape.

Opt for an Inca Trail tour that stops at a weaving co-op, where you can learn about traditional weaving and dyeing techniques and pick up some souvenirs to keep you warm on the trail.

Alternative option: Track the world’s finest cashmere to its source in Mongolia .

Experience the best of Peru with these 8 iconic hikes

wedding anniversary trip ideas - A couple walk in the ocean shallows under a blue sky, Bahamas.

10 years – tin: the Caribbean

You may have subsisted on canned soups and tinfoil-wrapped sandwiches while saving for your wedding day, but now that you’re a whole decade in, you deserve a little indulgence.

Make like Tintin (see what we did there?) and take to the seas on a Caribbean cruise or sailing trip, exploring the likes of St Lucia , Jamaica and Cuba .

Alternative option: Tintin also travelled to Tibet – although hopefully you won’t encounter any yetis on your Himalayan trek .

The best Caribbean islands: a quick, easy guide to finding your paradise

wedding anniversary trip ideas - Dusk at a vineyard in Champagne, France.

15 years – crystal: Reims, France

A pair of matching crystal flutes makes for a nice anniversary gift – but why not swing by the home of Champagne itself? The French region is crammed with opportunities to get sozzled on the sparkly stuff.

Reims is the ideal base for a boozy tour of all the big-name producers: Moët & Chandon, Veuve Clicquot and Dom Pérignon to name but a few. But if we’re sticking with the theme, perhaps the budget can stretch to a bottle of Cristal?

Alternative option: Swarovski fans will be all starry-eyed at Crystal Worlds in Wattens, Austria .

France’s 10 most stunning road trips

wedding anniversary trip ideas - a woman paints a porcelain vase in Jingdezhen, China.

20 years – china: China

Twenty years of matrimony is a quite a feat – and if it’s taken a few plate-smashing, vase-crunching screaming matches to get you here, who’s to judge? All is forgotten once you’re making up over steaming mugs of tea...

Journey to the home of porcelain (and your favourite loose leaf), China , for a cracking anniversary trip. Sip the hot stuff in Chengdu , before nipping to Jingdezhen for ceramic workshops and pottery purchases.

Alternative option: Clink china teacups during afternoon tea at the Ritz , London , the only UK hotel to have a certified tea sommelier.

The definitive guide to China’s national parks

wedding anniversary trip ideas - a man take a photograph of two silverback gorillas.

25 years – silver: Uganda

Chances are by this point, both you and your beau are sporting at least a few grey hairs – but it’s best not to tease Uganda’s silverbacks the way you do your partner… That’s right – why settle for a silver charm or tie clip when you can witness our wild and distant relatives in the cloud-shrouded forests of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park ?

The thrill of glimpsing the alpha male or a mother and her babies is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that’s even better when shared with a loved one. If reaching middle age together means adventures like this, who needs youth?

Alternative option: Pack your glad rags and hit the strip in Nevada’s so-called Silver City, Las Vegas .

Uganda’s incredible mountain gorillas are having a baby boom

wedding anniversary trip ideas - a person kayaking in the clear waters of French Polynesia.

30 years – pearl: Fiji and French Polynesia

30 years in and the world’s still your oyster – so splash out on a South Pacific getaway, where turquoise waters and swaying palms make the perfect setting to reflect on your many happy years together.

Learn about pearls on a Fiji farm tour; hunt for a bargain at French Polynesia’s pearl markets – or simply soak up the iridescent sunsets from a hammock at Tikehau Pearl Beach Resort . Wedded bliss doesn’t get better than this.

Alternative option: Channel pearl-strewn Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany’s with some window shopping on NYC ’s Fifth Avenue.

The A-to-Z of Fiji: 26 reasons to visit the island paradise

The adventure continues…

Still going strong after all these years? Make even more precious memories with these trip ideas:

40 years, ruby: Jordan or Arizona Jordan for Mars-like deserts or the Grand Canyon for copper-red vistas.

50 years, gold: Australia or Canada Australia’s Gold Coast or the Yukon for Canadian Gold Rush history .

60 years, diamond: Hawaii or South Africa Honolulu for views of Diamond Head, or Cape Town’s Diamond Museum .

Best 10 Year Anniversary Trips: A Budget-Friendly Guide

UPDATED March 28, 2022 by Tully Jenkins

Best 10 Year Anniversary Trips: A Budget-Friendly Guide

Picture this: You and your partner will soon be celebrating your 10-year anniversary of being together, and you’re thinking about how to make your celebration more memorable. Why not make your 10th anniversary extra special by going on a romantic trip with your partner? Don’t worry about going the extra mile (literally and figuratively), as you don’t have to break the bank to make this trip a reality. Don’t know how to do it? Follow the tips we prepared for you and check on our list for the best 10-year anniversary trips for couples.

Best 10 Year Anniversary Trips: Planning tips

1. plan together .

The first step on how to plan your best 10-year anniversary trips is to share the planning process. Avoid letting one person do all the planning as it may not end well. To make your trip healthier and more romantic, both you and your partner must discuss and agree with each other.

2. Plan early

There are plenty of reasons why it is always a good idea to plan early: more choices, more options, and most importantly, more discounts. Look for great deals online, like  Expedia  or  Skyscanner , and grab cheaper flight tickets and discounted hotel rooms and accommodation.

3. Set a realistic budget and stick to it

Another vital thing you need to do when planning and searching for cheap vacation ideas for couples is to consider your budget. Set a budget for your trip and start saving for your travel budget goal. There are several ways to save money for your anniversary trip, like instead of paying hotel staff $100 for candles and flower petals in the room, you can do it yourself and spend only around $20. You can also save a lot when choosing your destination. Forget Paris and Italy (although these are romantic places, not exactly ideal for a budget trip), go to equally romantic places like Greece or Budapest, or even try being a local tourist. There sure are many amazing places in your town or region that you haven’t explored yet. Another great idea to make sure you don’t overspend while on a trip is to set a daily budget. However, make sure you keep tabs on the essentials (food, transportation), other stuff activities, and some souvenirs. And if you can, allow yourself and your partner to splurge even on one thing – a relaxing massage or a Broadway ticket. It’s your anniversary, after all.

4. Don’t skip your travel insurance

Securing travel insurance is one way to protect yourself and your partner during a trip, especially when you are on an international trip. It could protect you in case either, or both of you need medical attention, injury, theft, and flight cancellations.

The 5 Best 10-Year Anniversary Trips Destinations

Looking for the best destination for your 10-year anniversary shouldn’t be difficult. There are many local and international places where you can spend a lovely, romantic time with your significant other without the need to spend all your life’s savings. Check out these five best 10-year anniversary trip destinations below.

1. Monterey County, California

You and your partner will indeed have fun, exciting, and romantic in this place with its uncrowded beaches, delectable and fresh seafood, and cozy hotels with a spectacular view of the Monterey Bay. Enjoy a scenic drive at  17-Mile Drive  and be amazed by the seals and pelicans around the beach coast, or enjoy a close-up view of numerous marine life at the  Monterey Bay Aquarium . Then, relax and spend a lovely evening together at the  Monterey Plaza Hotel & Spa  or  Hyatt Regency Monterey Hotel and Spa .

2. Nashville, Tennessee

Lovers and couples who are into art and music and chicken and $2-beer will surely love this destination. Experience Nashville’s top tourist attraction and enjoy great entertainment at  The Grand Ole-Opry , enjoy country music at the  Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum , see the main attractions in Nashville, and have a fantastic party on  Nashville’s Roofless Party Bus .

3. San Juan, Puerto Rico

One of the reasons why going to San Juan, Puerto Rico is a great idea to visit for your anniversary trip is that there are plenty of direct flights from the US, and passports are not required to enter this favorite Caribbean getaway. Experience 17th-century Spanish colonial feels at the Old San Juan or have a romantic time and be amazed by the beauty of nature at  Castillo San Felipe del Morro ,  Castillo de San Cristobal , and  San Juan National Historic Site .

4. Nosara, Costa Rica

12 Anniversary Trip Ideas For Every Milestone And Couple

The South is chock-full of charming destinations for a romantic getaway.

10 year trip

Gabriela Herman

Celebrating an anniversary offers the perfect excuse to plan a trip to somewhere new, or even back to a beloved place that you’ve been dreaming to revisit. A romantic getaway is an ideal way to spend quality time with a loved one, and these anniversary trip ideas and itineraries are sure to make more memories as you look back on fond ones.

Since anniversaries fall on every time of the year, we have different options for every type of couple. Planning for autumn? Consider celebrating with a Blue Ridge Mountains road trip with epic fall color or a bourbon tour in Kentucky. Dreaming of a tropical breeze ? The Florida Keys are calling. Want something unique? We’ve got small towns and cities worth wandering. Luckily, the South abounds with charming destinations to experience with your partner.

For every couple or milestone, there’s a Southern anniversary trip idea for your next vacation. See our list of favorite romantic destinations.

The Florida Keys

Head out on a road trip on the Overseas Highway, a 113-mile road spanning from Key Largo to Key West—the most famous among Florida’s southernmost archipelago. Beyond the conch-style houses, toes-in-the-sand seafood joints, and general good-living attitude, there’s no bound on what you can explore, starting with How To Spend The Perfect Day in Key West and The Secret Beaches of the Florida Keys Worth Visiting . Make sure to stop for a tour of Ernest Hemingway’s home and its famed six-toed cats.

Charleston, South Carolina

It’s easy to see the appeal of this charming coastal town for a romantic getaway—it’s been voted the South’s Best City several years running for just that reason. Cobblestone streets and colorful row homes make for easy wandering as you shop down King Street and eat at some of the best restaurants in the South. Get lunch at Leon's Fine Poultry & Oyster Shop (don’t miss the fried chicken), stop in at 100-plus-year-old store Croghan's Jewel Box , and book a room at Hotel Bennett on Marion Square.

Blue Ridge Parkway

Running through North Carolina and Virginia, this scenic road winds along the valleys and crests of the Appalachian Mountain range, connecting Great Smoky Mountains National Park to Shenandoah National Park. While there’s no bad time to see the sights, you’re in extra good luck if your trip lands during autumn months when fall color surrounds the drive, or during springtime when the flowers are in full bloom. Make sure to hit our recommendations for Iconic Spots on the Blue Ridge Parkway Everyone Should See and The Best Virginia Towns Along the Blue Ridge Parkway .

Dahlonega, Georgia

Ian Dagnall/Alamy

If you want to see the definition of small-town charm in person, a trip to Dahlonega will do the trick. After spending the morning wandering around the historic town square—which is centered around a courthouse that dates back to the state's early 19th-century gold rush—and grabbing breakfast at Picnic Café and Dessertery , head just outside town for an impressive collection of North Georgia wineries that are open for weekend tours and tastings, such as Wolf Mountain Vineyards , Montaluce Winery & Resort , and Crane Creek Vineyards .

Fort Worth, Texas

For those who enjoy learning about history and having a great time to boot, Fort Worth is like taking a step back into the Wild West. This cattle town recently reinvigorated the Stockyards National Historic District, and you can explore Exchange Avenue and its shops, restaurants, and saloons. Make sure to check out the Cowtown Coliseum, which held the first indoor rodeo arena in the country. Each Friday and Saturday, you can still attend events that showcase barrel racing, roping, and crowd-favorite bull riding. Plan your trip here.

Georgia’s Golden Isles

Yes, Georgia has a coast, and it’s draped in beautiful oaks and marshes. Two neighboring islands, Sea Island and St. Simons Island are both inviting places to visit anytime of the year, but it’s an especially welcoming destination during the holidays if you want to Celebrate A Lowcountry Christmas for your winter anniversary. For a more outdoorsy and warm-weather Georgia island, Jekyll Island offers biking on wide wooden pathways, kayaking on the marshlands, and relaxing on the beach.

Gatlinburg, Tennessee

The Smoky Mountains are calling, and luckily there are two popular towns to visit in between oohing and aahing at the mountain vistas and natural wonders. Head to Gatlinburg for the scenic SkyBridge , North America’s longest pedestrian suspension bridge, which leads up to a viewing deck, the SkyLift Park, that offers unobstructed views. Book a room at Dollywood's DreamMore Resort and Spa in neighboring Pigeon Forge.

Charlottesville, Virginia

With over 500-plus miles of Blue Ridge trails, a restaurant-per-capita density that rivals major cities like New York City, easy access to breweries and wineries, and Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello estate nearby for touring, Charlottesville is packed full of things to do. The Monticello Wine Trail has 40 wineries in a 25-mile radius of Charlottesville. Head to Pippin Hill Farm & Vineyards —which is known for its landscape, food, wines, and verdant grounds—for a relaxing day date.

Kentucky’s Bourbon Country

There’s not a bad time of the year to head out to the rolling hills of Kentucky’s bourbon and horse country. In the spring and fall, hit the horse races at Keeneland in Lexington , head to our South’s Best-voted favorite distillery , and stop into Bardstown, a historic small town in the countryside an hour outside Louisville. Make sure to stop in at the Old Talbott Tavern , one of the oldest stagecoach stops in the country, for Kentucky cuisine. The building was constructed in 1779.

Orange Beach, Alabama

Ask any Alabama native their favorite thing about the 32-mile stretch that makes up the beaches of Orange Beach and Gulf Shores, and it’d be hard to count the many reasons why families flock to this destination year after year. A good place to start would be The Best Things To Do In Orange Beach (including locally-beloved fried shrimp), but don’t miss the area’s biggest natural wonder, Gulf State Park , which boasts over 6,000 acres of land that includes a tranquil beach away from the busy crowds.

North Carolina’s Outer Banks

Make a beach trip into an adventure by embarking on an anniversary RV trip to North Carolina’s Outer Banks . The coastline is lined with wide, flat beaches that are perfect for long bike rides and often dog-friendly. Additionally, you can travel between towns like Nags Head, Duck, and Kitty Hawk. State Road 12 passes through lighthouses and beach villages for nearly 150 miles and culminates on the northernmost Currituck Banks, where you can spot wild horses.

Anna Maria Island, Florida

This seahorse-shaped barrier island runs for 7 miles along the Gulf Coast and, despite being a gorgeous enclave of sandy beaches with a strong local community, it has happily remained a hidden gem thanks to residents that have helped preserve its laid-back village vibe. Instead of high-rises, you’ll rent out charming beach cottages. Stroll Pine Avenue, the town’s original main street, where you’ll find a friendly mix of galleries, bakeries, boutiques, and restaurants. A quiet, breezy, relaxing anniversary? See our recommendations.

For our 20th anniversary, I had big dreams of a romantic getaway to Greece , or a couples trip to Bora Bora, returning to our honeymoon destination. If you are looking for an anniversary trip, romantic getaway, couples trip, or honeymoon ideas a little closer to home, start with our picks for the most romantic resorts in the USA.

I’ve asked friends, travel advisors, and trusted frequent travelers for their recommendations on the best romantic getaways in the U.S. for a special milestone anniversary trip. These are our top picks:

Most Romantic Resorts in the USA

1. Little Palm Island, Florida

When I stumbled on the website for Little Palm Island in the Florida Keys, I thought I hit the jackpot with everything that I wanted for our anniversary trip. A private island, our own tropical villa, and the most romantic atmosphere I can imagine within the continental United States. And then I looked at the price and realized I actually needed to hit the jackpot, or the lottery, to make even a splurge trip here a reality.

But if you are ready to spend, it is no surprise that Little Palm Island was included in the top resorts in the United States (and the World) by the Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards.

2. Amangiri, Canyon Point, Utah

Ever since spying the Amangiri hotel in a food magazine, my husband has been angling for a romantic getaway to this remote portion of Utah’s red rock country. Covering 600 acres of the vast and majestic Colorado Plateau, the Amangiri offers a desert landscape of canyons, mesas, ridges, and gorges.

Guests can choose between the modernist suites of Amangiri and the tented pavilions of Camp Sarika. To gain an appreciation of the landscape, you can tour slot canyons with Navajo guides, or observe powerful storytelling sessions and ritual dances by the fire in Monument Valley Tribal Park. Adventurers can also go canyoning, climbing, hiking, horseback riding, or enjoy water sports on Lake Powell. This is the perfect choice for those that enjoy spending time in nature and are active adventurers.

3. Bungalows Key Largo, Florida

Waterfront bungalows at Bungalows key Large

If you are craving a tropical setting but $2000+ a night is a little rich for your budget, head to Key Largo. Bungalows Key Largo is one of the few adults-only resorts in the United States. While it still costs a pretty penny, at least their price is all-inclusive.

Picture a waterfront bungalow with a private veranda featuring a large outdoor soaking tub as your romantic getaway retreat. If that doesn’t relax you, the Zen Garden Spa certainly should. If you want to book a bungalow for Valentine’s Day, guests can now add on a  Valentine’s Day Sunset Dinner Cruise on a luxury catamaran with live acoustic music and an elegant culinary experience.

4. Inn at Perry Cabin, St. Michael’s, Maryland

My friend Brianna recommends the Inn at Perry Cabin , on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. This Belmond property offers understated luxury in one of the most beautiful areas of the east coast. The hotel’s interiors reflect the area’s maritime history, with plenty of cozy nooks and crannies to snuggle with your significant other.

The outdoor views are best enjoyed in one of the resort’s many Adirondack chairs with a glass of wine in hand, a perfect spot for enjoying the sunset. This resort is perfect for foodie couples who enjoy waterfront activities like yoga, kayaking, and sailing lessons.

5. Post Ranch Inn, Big Sur, California

The Jade Pool overlooking ocean at the Post Ranch Inn

My friend and luxury travel advisor Kristi Marcelle recommends the Post Ranch Inn for an adults-only romantic getaway near San Francisco. Located on a clifftop overlooking the Pacific Ocean and the romantic landscape of Big Sur, the Post Ranch Inn is ideal for romance, relaxation, and rejuvenation.

With just 40 rooms and homes, the resort offers rustic elegance and privacy. Wellness and relaxation activities include morning yoga, guided nature hikes, forest, and sound journey meditation, as well as garden tours and art walks. Guests can also relax and enjoy the view at the infinity pool or use the resort’s telescope to star gaze at night.

6. Blackberry Farm, Walland, Tennessee

Located on a pastoral farm near the Great Smoky Mountains, this Relais & Châteaux resort offers bucket-list-worthy luxury. This intimate resort has something to offer everyone — from archery to carriage rides to culinary classes to water sports.

Blackberry Farm’s “foothill cuisine” draws foodies worldwide to enjoy its three inventive restaurants, which bring together a collection of artisans – chef, master gardener, baker, cheesemaker, forager, butcher, and sommelier.

7. White Barn Inn, Kennebunk, Maine

Luxury travel advisor and friend Barbara Weindling recommends the White Barn Inn for those looking for a classic New England romantic getaway. This Auberge Resorts Collection hotel offers coastal luxury and award-winning dining in one of the most charming towns on the Maine coast .

While you are there, you can enjoy culinary experiences such as chocolate making, cocktail creations, and Sunday tea. Outdoors, guests can enjoy a private cycling tour or sailing along the coast. Or cozy up inside in the Couple’s Spa Suite for an afternoon of romance and pampering.

8. The Point, Saranac Lake, New York

Also recommended by my friend Barbara, The Point is the only Forbes Five-Star property in the Adirondacks . This Relais & Châteaux hotel offers only eleven rooms for an intimate experience.

Built by William Avery Rockefeller II and crafted of native timber and stone, today it is the only Adirondack Great Camp from the Gilded Age open to the public. Enjoy boating, fishing, tennis, waterskiing, croquet, badminton, swimming, wake surfing, kayaking, paddle boarding, and hiking in the warmer months, or cuddle up with hot toddies by a roaring fire or champagne from the fully stocked ice bar on the lake after a day ice skating, curling and ice fishing in the winter.

9. Magee Homestead at Brush Creek Ranch, Saratoga, Wyoming

Another pick for outdoor adventurers, Kristi also recommends the adults-only Magee Homestead at Brush Creek Ranch. A member of Relais & Châteaux and recipient of the Forbes Travel Guide Five Star rating, Magee Homestead is an all-inclusive ranch that is part of the Brush Creek Ranch Collection.

Magee Homestead offers luxury accommodations in private cabins that once housed cow camp hands. You can enjoy gourmet culinary experiences, relaxing spa treatments, or outdoor adventures and exploration in Medicine Bow National Forest.

10. The Chanler, Newport, Rhode Island

The Chanler at Cliff Walk exterior with flowering bushes out front

Housed in a mansion on Newport’s famed Cliff Walk,  The Chanler  offers twenty distinctive Newport hotel rooms, which are elegantly decorated in various period styles. The Chanler has been on our wishlist for a romantic getaway in Newport since we first moved here and sampled the chef’s tasting menu at the hotel’s gourmet restaurant.

This Forbes Four-Star Hotel offers a luxury experience reminiscent of the Gilded Age. Stroll through the manicured gardens while you take in breathtaking ocean vistas, walk along the three-mile Cliff Walk, enjoy a gourmet meal, and sip an after-dinner drink at the fire pit and star gaze.

11. Inn at Newport Ranch, Fort Bragg, California

View of rocky coastline from an adirondack chair at the Inn at Newport Ranch

Located just 30 minutes from Mendocino on the Northern California Coast, the Inn at Newport Ranch is a local secret that luxury travel advisor Kristi Marcelle first clued me into and is perfect for a California romantic getaway .

The ranch encompasses seven microclimates on 2,000 acres set along one-and-one-half miles of rugged coastline, offering plenty of space to spread out and explore. Catering to only 26 guests in total, this intimate resort offers big views, along with 20 miles of trails for mountain biking or off-roading. Dining is another highlight, and right now meals can even be delivered to your patio for more privacy.

12. White Elephant, Nantucket, Massachusetts

White Elephant hotel from the water with boats in the harbor

The iconic White Elephant has been named among the finest luxury hotels on Nantucket Island for decades and is a popular romantic getaway destination for those seeking New England island charm. This waterfront resort offers spacious suites with private balconies overlooking the harbor, as well as private garden cottages.

From the resort, it is easy to enjoy the beach, shop in Nantucket Town, or take in the views at the Brant Point Lighthouse. Guests can also relax by the outdoor heated pool, hop on a bike and explore the area, sip cocktails on the Harborside Lawn, or rejuvenate in the world-class spa.

13. San Ysidro Ranch, Santa Barbara, California

Wedding lawn with flowers and green arches with mountains in the background at San Ysidro Ranch

Recommended by Lynn Juliano, a travel advisor with Travel Xperts , San Ysidro Ranch is the secret hideaway embodying the spirit of Old California. Everyone from Audrey Hepburn, Winston Churchill, JFK and Jackie, Sir Laurence Olivier, and Vivian Leigh have taken up residence here. With 500 acres and 17 miles of hiking trails nestled between the mountains and ocean, San Ysidro Ranch is a perfect romantic escape.

The resort offers intimate cottages scattered around lush gardens, each individually decorated with antiques. Many offer large private decks, indoor/outdoor rain showers, sunken hot tubs, heated floors, and private gardens.

14. The Cloister at Sea Island, Georgia

Living room of the Sea Island suite at The Cloister

We have been debating an anniversary trip to The Cloister at Sea Island for some time. I love the Golden Isles of Georgia and since Sea Island is restricted to owners and guests only, it offers both luxury and more intimacy. The Cloister offers three charming settings of accommodations, featuring elegant and unique Spanish Mediterranean décor.

Guests can enjoy five miles of private beach, the adults-only swimming pool, a round of golf, or a couples massage at the Forbes Five-Star Spa Sea Island. For a romantic evening, try horseback riding on the beach followed by dinner and a rose petal turn-down service.

15. Miraval Arizona, Tucson, Arizona

Couples seeking a wellness retreat will bask in the desert sun at the Miraval Arizona in Tucson. The resort offers all-inclusive packages with transformational wellnesses experiences, outdoor adventures, culinary delights, and spa services.

This Sonoran Desert sanctuary provides a wide range of comfortable casita-inspired accommodations for reflection and mindfulness, including rooms, suites, and villas.

16. Twin Farms, Barnard, Vermont

Twin Farms boathouse and lodge in the evening with lights reflecting on the water

Twin Farms is an all-inclusive resort located on 300 bucolic acres in Vermont , offering up seclusion and privacy. The resort welcomes only adults and teens, with 10 romantically designed cottages and a selection of rooms in the lodge, farmhouse, and main house.

A vast selection of indoor and outdoor activities that focus on well-being are available to guests, including biking, canoeing, fly fishing, hiking, swimming, tennis, and more. Custom-designed meals, wine pairings, and spirits are included in the rate and can be enjoyed in the dining areas or in the privacy of your accommodations.

17. Auberge de Soleil, Rutherford, California

The “Inn of the Sun” is nestled within a terraced, sun-kissed hillside amid 33 acres of heritage olive and oak trees, in Napa wine country. The hotel’s 50 contemporary guestrooms and suites effortlessly blend relaxed sophistication with understated elegance, resulting in a romantic getaway destination.

Auberge du Soleil is the dream of French restaurateur, Claude Rouas, and The Restaurant has maintained its legacy as a “must-experience” culinary destination for more than 40 years. Couples can enjoy a private wine tasting, an art walk in the sculpture garden, a picnic in the park, a scenic hike, or a bike ride on the Napa Valley Vine Trail.

18. Dunton Hot Springs, Dolores, Colorado

Dunton Hot Springs is not your typical romantic retreat. This perfectly restored ghost town features exquisitely-furnished log cabins and a saloon serving gourmet food.

Nestled in an alpine valley deep in the San Juan Mountains of the Colorado Rockies , guests can enjoy challenging hiking trails followed by pampering massages. Of course, all must use one of the five ways to “take the waters” — including inside the restored 19th-century Bathhouse, under the stars at the source, in the pool outside the Bathhouse, in the pool behind the Dunton Store cabin, and inside Well House cabin.

19. The Inn at Little Washington, Washington, Virginia

This Relais and Chateaux, Forbes Double 5 star, and Double AAA 5 Diamond property is located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge mountains not far outside of Washington D.C. The Inn at Little Washington , features eighteen bedrooms and suites, created by London stage and set designer Joyce Evans.

These accommodations range from well-appointed rooms to luxurious, two-story suites, many with balconies and garden views. The Inn’s dining rooms are also pure fantasy, with rose-colored, silk lampshades that float above each table, highlighting the inspired American cuisine of Patrick O’Connell.

Best cheap couples getaways for 2024.

Deciding to go on a romantic getaway with your sweetheart is easy, but picking a destination that's both romantic and affordable can be a challenge. That's why U.S. News considered prices for accommodations, attractions and dining to compile this list of the best cheap couples getaways. These top-notch destinations are both romantic and budget-friendly, offering plenty of affordable things to do and places to stay with your partner. Do these vacation spots spark romance for you? Let us know by voting below.

Cannon Beach

San miguel de allende, niagara falls, glacier national park, victoria & vancouver island, puerto rico, the finger lakes, asheville, nc, colorado springs, portland, me.

10 year trip

You came for the fascinating Mayan ruins, but you'll stay for the white sand beaches and spectacular swimming sinkholes, known as cenotes. Spend the day lounging on palm-lined Playa Paraíso, then cuddle up to your sweetheart at night in an affordable boutique hotel or luxurious glamping tent, many of which offer amenities like king-sized beds, bike rentals and Wi-Fi access. Plus, Tulum's restaurant scene offers budget-friendly fare in boho-chic settings. Couples heading to Tulum between May and November will enjoy fewer crowds and cheaper room rates, but keep in mind that these months are notorious for sweltering temperatures and frequent rain showers.

10 year trip

Savannah, Georgia, has no shortage of fanciful things to do. Couples can stroll beneath Spanish moss-laden trees at Forsyth Park, browse for souvenirs at the City Market or drive to nearby Tybee Island to relax on the beach – all for free. Lovebirds can also go on a spooky ghost tour to learn all about Savannah's history. When hunger strikes, skip River Street and opt for the various unsuspecting diners and counter-service shops dishing out authentic but cheap Southern eats. To save some cash on accommodations, find a hotel outside of the Historic District or consider a vacation rental.

10 year trip

Located about 80 miles northwest of Portland, Oregon, Cannon Beach ups the romance factor with breathtaking scenery, intimate restaurants and cozy bed-and-breakfasts. Couples can spend misty mornings exploring the quaint art galleries and shops in town, and beer enthusiasts can also visit several of Cannon Beach's breweries featured on the North Coast Craft Beer Trail. Plus, duos who love the outdoors will enjoy hiking nearby trails or strolling the wide sandy beaches, where they can spot tufted puffins on Haystack Rock or migrating gray whales every spring and winter.

10 year trip

With its pastel-hued facades, cobblestone streets and the tolling of bells from Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel, San Miguel de Allende exudes magic at every corner. Though the plane tickets may not be cheap, once you arrive with your sweetheart you'll find inexpensive boutique hotels and affordable, authentic cuisine. Spend your days exploring art galleries, people-watching in lush parks and admiring the neo-Gothic architecture. And be sure to share a chocolate-dipped churro from San Agustín Chocolates and Churros in El Jardín, the city's main square. Skip the pricey (albeit beautifully curated) boutiques and shop at the bustling Mercado de Artesanías for handcrafted souvenirs.

10 year trip

Once referred to as the "Honeymoon Capital of the World," Niagara Falls is a prime choice for adventurous twosomes who don't mind a bit of kitsch. Don ponchos and marvel at the falls aboard a Maid of the Mist boat tour , and don't miss coming back at night (on the Canadian side) to see them illuminated. Couples can also escape the crowds and test out the region's famous ice wine. Save some cash on your weekend getaway by staying on the less developed New York side of the falls.

10 year trip

While outdoorsy couples can hike the trails in Red Rock State Park, those looking for more peace and quiet can retreat to one of Sedona's wellness resorts for a couples massage or a soak in the hot tub, or kick up their feet on a scenic train ride on the Verde Canyon Railroad. When it comes to dining, snag a spot at an intimate restaurant that offers alfresco tables and excellent views. You'll likely want to visit in fall, winter or spring to avoid this Arizona destination's notorious summer heat, though winter will be the best option for cheap room rates.

10 year trip

Budget-conscious lovebirds who enjoy breathtaking landscapes, challenging hikes and waking up early for picture-perfect sunrises over the lake should put Glacier National Park at the top of their travel bucket list. Scenic spots to explore in this Montana national park include Lake McDonald, the Trail of the Cedars and Grinnell Glacier. Skip the hotel and opt for a tent instead to save big bucks and get the chance to watch for shooting stars. You can always stop in for a post-hike drink at some of the area's more iconic lodges to take in the views without the room rate.

10 year trip

One of Canada's more underrated spots, Vancouver Island is home to British Columbia's capital city of Victoria. Couples can explore Victoria's historical charm, blooming gardens and sprawling parks by day, indulge in high tea in the afternoon and then sit down for a romantic dinner at a farm-to-table restaurant by night. Those looking for a more remote getaway can venture to Tofino for its enchanting forests and prime whale watching opportunities. No matter where you're based, consider an intimate stay at a boutique hotel, an inn or a bed-and-breakfast to relax, reconnect.

10 year trip

Wine-loving duos who don't want to splurge on a Napa getaway should consider Sonoma. Often described as Napa's more relaxed, affordable sibling, Sonoma is chock-full of laid-back vineyards , secluded resorts and country inns. When couples need a break from sipping vino, they can head to Sonoma Coast State Park to trek through the trails that crisscross the park and admire the spectacular California scenery. Or, save some coin on dining by packing a picnic to enjoy at Lake Sonoma Recreation Area.

10 year trip

If you're craving a dreamy Caribbean retreat without the pricey airfare or the need for a passport, consider the island of Puerto Rico. This colorful destination is home to a smattering of beachfront resorts, but it also features stunning natural wonders like El Yunque National Forest, the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. The charmingly vibrant Old San Juan is perfect for relaxing dinners, street dancing and evening strolls with your sweetheart, or opt to stay in Rincón for its seclusion and postcard-worthy sunsets.

10 year trip

New York's Finger Lakes area is one of the top wine regions in the country, and it's an easy vacation spot to reach from much of the East Coast and parts of the Midwest. The fee for tastings at the wineries is often small in comparison to other regions. This scenic destination is also equal parts romantic and affordable thanks to its variety of cozy cabin rentals, waterfront dining venues and fun outdoor activities to do together year-round (think: hiking and biking in the warmer months and skiing in the winter).

10 year trip

Fall foliage along the Appalachian Trail and Blue Ridge Parkway transform this quaint North Carolina mountain town into a rustic retreat. You can save money by choosing a bed-and-breakfast instead of a luxury resort, and free activities abound, such as hiking or stargazing. Tickets don't come cheap for the city's top attraction, the Biltmore Estate, but you can get your money's worth with a full day of touring the ornate Biltmore House and weaving through the prolific gardens. What's more, Asheville's revered dining scene remains unfussy, so you're sure to find barbecue joints and taco shops that won't break the bank.

10 year trip

Sitting about 70 miles south of Denver, Colorado Springs offers mountain town allure at a lower price point than its northern neighbor. The area's must-visit natural attraction, Garden of the Gods Park, is completely free to visit and offers hiking, biking and rock climbing. Once couples have worked up an appetite, they can tuck into hearty fare at more than 20 cozy craft breweries or other buzzworthy dining options . Then, dance the night away at one of the low-key live music venues the city has to offer.

10 year trip

When you and your significant other aren't exploring the charming cobblestone streets of Old Port, admiring the Victorian-era architecture in West End or perusing eclectic galleries in the Arts District, steal away to one of Portland, Maine's secluded beaches for a quiet shoreline stroll. If your heart isn't set on lobster, you can find affordable casual dining spots ranging from sandwich shops and diners to taquerias. For the cheapest rates, plan a winter visit and curl up by the fireplace in your shingled seaside cottage or inn.

How To Pull Off a Successful 10-Year-Old Trip

April 25, 2019 by Nicolette Leave a Comment

10 year trip

When your ten-year old looks up at you and says, “Mom, this is the best day of my life…” it means something.

When you’re one of multiple siblings, it can be a little hard for your voice to be heard. With four kids, there’s a lot of noise in our house and a lot of vying for attention. When my husband was growing up, his parents pinched pennies so that they could take each of their five children on a special one-on-one trip. When my husband turned 10, his mom took him to Hershey, Pennsylvania and it’s always stuck with him. He remembers minute details of their trip and that his mom gave him a $20 bill to buy a souvenir with, which he ended up spending on a gold chain in the airport. (Hey, it was 1990s!)

10 year trip

I’ve always loved the idea of a 10-year-old trip and wanted to carry on that tradition with our own children. Why 10-years-old? It’s that perfect age where kids are independent enough to be easy travelers, but not “too cool” to hang out with their parents. This year, my oldest turned 10 and we set out on an unforgettable one-on-one trip that ended up being pretty special. Destination: Cocoa Beach, Florida!

10 year trip

Below are a few valuable lessons I learned in pulling off this one-on-one trip, but the most important one is this: it was 100% worth it . All of the planning, the money spent, and the time taken away from work—it was all worth that one moment when my daughter looked up, eyes beaming, and declared that this was the greatest day of her life. The next time I hear those words, she may be graduating, or getting married, or holding her first child.

The time we have with our kids is short and precious.

10 year trip

1. Choosing the perfect location

When choosing where we wanted to go, the answer was easy. Our daughter was born in Florida and we moved away when she was one-year-old, so she doesn’t remember anything about her birth place. We wanted to take her back and show her all the places that were special to us. Plus, Florida is warm, sunny, and has so many fun attractions that makes it the perfect vacation spot!

If you’re yearning for warmth, fun, beaches, and attractions, it doesn’t get any better than Cocoa Beach.

10 year trip

Cocoa Beach, Florida is about an hour East of Orlando, which makes it super convenient to the airport, big attraction parks, and Cape Canaveral cruise port. It’s a fun beach town with a lively vibe and it’s great for families!

10 year trip

When narrowing down your 10-year-old trip destination , think about your child’s interests and personality. What do they like? What place would personally connect to them?

10 year trip

2. Finding the best accommodations

There are a lot of hotels in Cocoa Beach, Florida, but none are as fun as the Westgate Cocoa Beach Resort . This place is a family’s dream!

10 year trip

Every room is a luxury suite and has premier appliances, finishes, and plenty of elbow room to allow you to completely relax.

10 year trip

Each room is 812 square feet and sleeps around 6 guests.

10 year trip

There are two bedrooms, three beds, and as my daughter wanted me to tell you all…THREE TVs! (Which she thought was pretty awesome!)

10 year trip

Right outside your front door at Westgate Cocoa Beach Resort is the most amazing little on-site water park in Cocoa Beach , equipped with a lazy river, incredible kids splash zone with waterslides and enough wet fun to keep them cool and entertained for hours.

10 year trip

Westgate Cocoa Beach Resort: So Fun for Families!

And that’s not all: there is a full-sized outdoor pool, a kiddie pool, a hot tub, and a tiki bar and grill right there. You don’t even need to leave the resort!

10 year trip

On weekends, they have movies and popcorn by the pool and that was so much fun! On Friday, they showed  Tangled and we relaxed in the hot tub and then layed on the pool chairs and munched popcorn as the movie played. Everything at this  Cocoa Beach Hotel is so thoughtful and geared toward families. I thought that was so special.

10 year trip

They have outdoor grills so guests can barbecue and hang out by the pool and save money on eating out.

10 year trip

And if that weren’t enough, the beach is just steps from the resort!

10 year trip

And Westgate Cocoa Beach Resort has its own private beach space where they provide all guests with beach towels, sunscreen, sand toys, surf boards, and boogie boards FREE OF CHARGE!

10 year trip

No renting equipment, no worrying if you forgot anything! Just get yourself to the beach and everything is there for you…it’s amazing! They even come around and clean your sunglasses for you. Now that’s hospitality!

10 year trip

Our beach day was probably our favorite day. We laid out in a shaded cabana, made sand castles, boogie boarded, played beach volleyball, and I even got crazy and took a surf lesson through the Westgate Cocoa Beach Resort Beach Concierge . That surf lesson was my favorite part of the day!

10 year trip

3. Age-appropriate activities

When pulling off a successful 10-year-old trip, appropriate activities are tantamount. choose things your child would love, not necessarily what you would prefer. Here are some of the super fun things to do in Cocoa Beach that you can’t miss!

10 year trip

The Cocoa Beach Pier:  Also operated by Westgate Resorts, the Cocoa Beach Pier is an 800-foot, world famous pier at the heart of Cocoa Beach and is the source of great shopping, eating, and fun beach activities.

10 year trip

There is a free trolly that will take you to the pier where you can catch the live music and watch surfers and sand volleyball players. We drank watermelon mint lemonades on the pier and even spotted a whale about a hundred yards away from us in the ocean.

10 year trip

Ron Jon surf shop:  Cocoa Beach is home of the world’s largest, most iconic surf shop, Ron Jon Surf Shop. When you’re in Cocoa Beach, it’s a MUST to stop here. They’ve got everything you need for fun in the sun, and even if you’re just window shopping, a visit to this flagship store should definitely be on the list.

10 year trip

The Beach:

Nothing tops a day at the beach. It’s fun, relaxing, and is for the most part free. Cocoa Beach has such a fun beach atmosphere. You can head down to the Cocoa Beach Pier or peruse the coastline and claim your perfect beach spot. It was so nice staying at Westgate Cocoa Beach Resort because of the awesome beach amenities. I recommend taking a surfing lesson there!

10 year trip

Mini golf: If you’re looking for a fun nighttime activity when the weather cools off, head to Golf-N-Gator in Cape Canaveral (just a few minutes away). It’s not just a cute mini-golf course, but you can see tons of live gators and other creatures there! It was like a mini zoo combined with putt-putt golf. Super fun!

10 year trip

Universal Orlando Resort:

And you can’t really make a trip to the Orlando area without hitting up one of the major theme parks there. Since we’ve been reading the Harry Potter books together, it was a must that we take our daughter to Universal Orlando Resort to visit the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. To put it simply, our day there was amazing. If you are a Harry Potter fan, you absolutely  must make it here. Even muggles who aren’t fans will love the enchantment and excitement here, not to mention all the other great attractions at Universal Orlando Resort, which has two theme parks and a water park.

10 year trip

4. Make sure to take lots of photos.

Sometimes I get caught up in all the fun and forget to pull out my camera. To really pull off a successful 10-year-old trip that they’ll remember forever, you have to take a lot of photos. Make sure to document each activity that you do together and all the things you’ll want to remember. Afterward, consider making a photo book or putting together a video that will stand the test of time.

5. Let them know they are loved.

Most importantly, let them know that they are loved. I knew this one-on-one trip would help bring us all closer together, but I was touched by how it affected my daughter. At every turn she would give us a big hug and tell us thank you. She was light-hearted and talked more freely with us and it was a side of her that I rarely see at home.

10 year trip

I could tell that this trip was something she desperately needed.

10 year trip

So, if you’re thinking of taking a one-on-one trip with your child, grandchild, niece, or nephew…do it. Just make it happen. It is special, it is unforgettable, and most importantly, it is worth it because they are worth it.

10 year trip

A huge thanks to Westgate Cocoa Beach Resort for partnering with us on this post. It is an amazing family-friendly resort and such a fun destination!

If you’re planning a trip to Florida, make sure to put St. Augustine on your list as well!

Top 10 Anniversary Getaways

An anniversary getaway should mark the occasion with a fittingly momentous celebration. Here at TRULY, our dedicated concierge team devote days at a time to researching and creating only the finest holidays that suit the occasion perfectly. With this in mind, we asked the team to share the most romantic, indulgent and unforgettable destinations to ensure your anniversary break is truly memorable. See our top 10 anniversary getaways below.

Jump To a Section Below

10. Langkawi, Malaysia

9. honolulu, hawaii, 8. cinque terre, italy, 7. barcelona, 4. barbados, 3. iceland escape.

We begin our tour of the most romantic getaways with Langkawi, a stunning northern Malaysian island. This jewel of the Andaman Sea is synonymous with tropical paradise. Indulge in a serene and luxurious trip, while exploring some of the finest untouched nature in Asia.

You can ascend on the island’s cable cars, taking a vertiginous ride to the peak of the island’s protruding mountains. The ride offers spectacular views of the surrounding lush mountain greenery from your gondola. Alternatively, take a dip under the dazzling Seven Wells waterfall that cascades from a 90 metre vantage point before meeting the luscious lagoon below.

Ideal for… Nature lovers’ anniversary. With waterfalls, caves, jungle, mountains, beaches, sea and, of course, amazing views, Langkawi is a great fit for those who appreciate nature.

Get active together by climbing a volcanic crater, diving in the cobalt blue sea, or surfing the high waves. Perhaps the best way to cap off an anniversary break in Hawaii, however, is to enjoy a romantic beachside dinner as the sun dips below the horizon to reveal a star-studded sky.

Ideal for… Active anniversary. Out in the middle of the Pacific, Hawaii hosts the perfect coastline for diving, snorkelling, surfing and various other activities.

For a memorable anniversary, learn how to prepare and cook the speciality seafood for which Cinque Terre is famed, visit the local market to pick out the finest local ingredients and, finally, rustle up your own vision of fine dining excellence.

Ideal for… Foodies’ anniversary. The appetising Italian cuisine of Cinque Terre imbues the stunning scenery of the region.

Head for a romantic stroll through the Park Güell, admiring the natural scenery and surreal architecture. Or relax on one of the city’s pretty beaches, for a serene anniversary love in. An ideal way to record all of these memorable moments together is on a leisurely photography tour of the city.

Ideal for… Cultural anniversary. The gorgeous architecture throughout Barcelona is a Catalonian highlight.

Enjoy an exquisite dinner by the river, or sample the city’s fantastic collection of art, from Gothic masterpieces in the Convent of St. Agnes, to sumptuous art nouveau and striking surrealism in the Veletržní Palác. The Czech capital is the ideal city for romantic wanders, with its maze of beguiling zigzagging narrow cobblestone lanes. Just a short amble from the Old Town Square, you can find ancient churches, mystical gardens, chic bars and charming street cafes.

Ideal for… Art lovers’ anniversary. Prague is a city inspired by Bohemian and Gothic art. While this is showcased in the wonderful galleries, a sense for the artistic impression of these styles pervades the whole of the city.

Paris also boasts some of the world’s finest cuisine and a plethora of restaurants to showcase it: the ideal setting for a passionate, celebratory anniversary meal. And if eating the cuisine isn’t enough, you can try your hand at French pastry and dessert making.

Ideal for… Extra romantic anniversary. The city of love, speaking the language of love. Paris is a city full of starry eyed couples enjoying a romantic getaway.

Head for classic British afternoon tea or tune in to the euphonious sounds of calypso while you sip on local rum. If you want to enjoy some recreation time together, the island hosts a wide range of activities amidst its rolling limestone hills and along its gorgeous coastline.

Ideal for… Beach lovers. With some of the world’s most stunning beaches, Barbados is perfect for relaxing days by the sea.

There can be few more romantic destinations than the Rejkjadalur valley, where the hot springs mean you can relax all year round. Head there in wintertime, when the valley is covered in crisp snow but you can take a soothing soak in a steaming lagoon and view one of nature’s finest shows: a private audience with the dancing northern lights above.

Ideal for… Back to nature anniversary. With rock formations, snow, lagoons, fjords, forests and, of course, one giant volcano, Iceland is the beautiful natural world as it should be.

Head to the idyllic market squares, with their beautiful old towers, almhouses and tollhouses and share some of the delicious waffles, tempting chocolate and full-bodied beer for which Belgium is famous. To complete the fairytale anniversary break , immerse yourself in the city with a ride by horse-drawn carriage. Soak up the serene atmosphere, as the gentle clatter of hooves echo throughout the Burgundian day.

Ideal for… Dreamy anniversary. The ultimate folk tale city, Bruges’s narrow, twisting alleys, foggy canals and lovely market squares all contribute to a dreamlike break.

Wander the alleyways to spot artisans and musicians and view some of the world’s finest art at the Church of Frari. Marvel at the craftsmanship behind the famous Venetian masks and even try your hand at creating one for yourself. Await the glorious golden sunset on St. Mark’s Square while you wonder at the sheer allure of the domes of the Basilica San Marco or the ornate Doge’s Palace. Sip on tea in the meantime, at a piazza café, serenaded by the mellifluous sounds of the street orchestras.

Ideal for… Cultured romantic anniversary. There can’t be many things in the romantic imagination that surpass being serenaded aboard a gondola on the canals of Venice. The city island also has a lot of culture too, though, with some of the finest art and architecture in the world.

Vacationer’s Guide

Comparing destinations: which one is right for you.

When choosing the most fun places to go with your kids, consider your desired experience and interests.

Also, check and compare each destination’s drawbacks and limitations.

The Portland Marriott Downtown Waterfront offers a convenient downtown location with stunning views and various kid-friendly activities.

However, one drawback of this hotel is its pricing, as it tends to be expensive.

The Park Hyatt Vienna is a luxurious hotel that impresses with its upscale rooms and multiple dining options.

But it has limited on-site kid-friendly activities.

Cedar Cove Resort & Cottages offers a relaxing and peaceful ambiance and provides various beach and water activities.

However, certain amenities and services have additional charges, which can be a downside to other guests.

If you’re seeking a more luxurious alternative to Cedar Cove Resort & Cottages with many amenities and activities, go to Four Seasons Chicago.

Its only drawback is that noise levels can be high during peak tourist season.

How I Picked The Destinations

I love traveling with my family, and we always choose the best places kids will love.

As we stayed in different destinations, I thoroughly studied each place’s services and other offerings.

I also interacted with other families and travelers, and we talked about their experiences.

Likewise, I asked them for some insights and tips about each property to make my reviews more credible.

Our Rating Method

I rate these vacations based on the following criteria:

  • Safety: I use this criterion to evaluate the overall safety of every vacation destination. Does it have a strong safety record? Does it provide child-friendly safety measures? These are the questions I ask myself when evaluating safety.
  • Kid-Friendly Activities: I use this criterion to evaluate the availability and quality of kid-friendly activities. Does the destination offer a variety of engaging activities? Is it near theme parks, zoos, museums, nature parks, and beaches? Is it both educational and fun? I consider these factors when rating this criterion.
  • Affordability: This assesses the affordability of the family vacation. Is it expensive? Are the accommodations, activities, meals, and transportation affordable? Are there family-friendly discounts? These are the questions I take into account to rate affordability.
  • Ease of Travel: I use this to rate the accessibility and ease of getting around the area. Is it easy to navigate? Does it offer family-friendly transportation options? Do we need to fly to get to the destination? I ask myself these questions in order to evaluate ease of travel.
  • Accommodation Options: This assesses the availability and quality of accommodations. Does it provide spaces that separate adult and child sleeping areas? Are there amenities like a kitchen, laundry, and swimming pool available? These are the questions I ask when evaluating accommodation options.
  • Food Diversity: This criterion evaluates the availability of kid-friendly food options. Does it cater to different dietary preferences? Are there child-friendly menus? I consider these factors when rating food diversity.

Conclusion

10 year trip

Overall, these destinations offer the best vacations for kids under 10 years old.

We had a great time exploring Vienna, thanks to Park Hyatt Vienna’s convenient location.

It was a cultural delight, and my youngest was enchanted by the horse-drawn carriage rides.

At Cedar Cove Resort & Cottages, I enjoyed kayaking with the family and swimming in the crystal-clear waters.

We had a fun-filled day of snorkeling and building sandcastles.

This resort’s peaceful ambiance also allowed us to unwind and create lasting memories together.

We also had a relaxing time at Four Seasons Chicago, with its luxurious and spacious room.

But the Portland Marriott Downtown Waterfront was the best among these hotels and resorts.

From the swimming pool to the game room, my family was entertained throughout our stay.

The hotel staff was also incredibly friendly and accommodating, making sure that we felt welcomed and cared for.

Through every destination, we forged invaluable family memories and, yes, the occasional challenge of traveling with young kids.

From relaxing escapes with your infant to deep cultural immersions upon college graduation, here are travel ideas for families with children at any stage.

Once a traveler, always a traveler. There are folks who believe a baby doesn't have to change a thing about a couple's lifestyle, and others who subscribe to the exact opposite theory. But all can agree on one thing: Those who loved traveling before expanding their family likely dream of continuing to explore the world, little ones in tow. One of the most exciting parts of having children, after all, is the way they enrich and amplify almost every experience. Then, of course, there's the awe-inspiring discovery that goes along with watching curious youngsters see and try new things, from delicious foods to beautiful cultures.

Knowing which places around the globe are most appropriate for kids as they grow into and out of different phases can be tough to anticipate. And yes, it's more daunting to fly or contend with jet lag at certain ages. It's true, too, that as little ones become big, trips become more expensive. But all the challenges are far outweighed by the collective joy that's possible on a family vacation, especially one tailored to the brood's developmental stage and interests.

Here, with the help of a few travel experts, we break it down by age group, pairing each with a dreamy destination for exposure to the wondrous world and maximum family fun.

Infants (Ages 0-1): A Mexican Beach Resort

You'll hear it from every parent: Travel while your baby is just that — a baby — because it'll never be easier. Once they start walking, all bets are off. True, you're likely sleep deprived, but doesn't that make it the perfect time to hop on a short flight to Mexico for some R&R and vitamin D?

When planning a first vacation with an infant, Indagare CEO and founder Melissa Biggs Bradley says, "You'll want a warm location with a direct flight, a big beach since infants are still too young to enjoy a kids club, and easy access to good medical care in case of an ear infection or anything more serious."

Expect to bring way too much gear, but don't worry — any parent will empathize. A family-friendly resort in a development like the Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita (for West Coasters) or Rosewood Mayakoba (for East Coasters) is a great bet since they'll happily provide the comforts of home (think: crib, mini fridge for milk, high chair, baby bathtub, or diaper pail), meaning you can focus your packing around sun protection and adorable tropical ensembles for your baby. They're also likely to offer babysitting services, in case you'd like to have dinner one night after 7 p.m. As for the new parent exhaustion, a soft, sandy beach is an idyllic place to catch up on Zs, for all of you. There's a reason sound machines come with a blue noise option — the gentle lapping of waves could lull anyone right to sleep.

Toddlers (Ages 1-4): The Island of Hawai'i

To a toddler, there's excitement to be found everywhere. They're like mini explorers, captivated by virtually every landscape and situation. Young kids who have just discovered the freedom of walking, running, and swimming will find pure magic in the Hawaiian islands. The coral reefs, beautiful beaches , Polynesian culture, soulful storytelling, near-perfect weather, and wildlife such as dolphins, whales, and sea turtles hold plenty of appeal for adults, yes, but also for toddlers.

The island of Hawai'i, specifically, offers a diversity of stunning environments, from stark and surreal lava flows to lush waterfalls, as well as resorts with little to no crowds. Mauna Lani , part of the Auberge Resorts Collection, with its ancient royal fishponds, outrigger canoes, and calm beach, exemplifies the family-forward approach. Their Holoholo Kids Crew offers thoughtful programming (think: crab hunting, Hawaiian language lessons, petroglyph walks, and natural dyeing, stamping, and feather art). And while it's designed for ages five to 12, three and four year olds can also attend with their parents (a great excuse for grown-ups to experience all the fun, too). Uncle Danny, the resort's cultural gatekeeper whose domain is the vibrant "house of knowledge," is wonderful with children.

"Many Hawaii resorts have protected ponds where you can take your toddlers into the ocean," says Biggs Bradley. "You can enjoy whale-watching cruises, and, in their later toddler years, they'll appreciate learning about the wildlife, maybe attend lei-making classes, or just relaxing by the pool or on the beach."

Elementary School (Ages 5-10): Rome, Italy

Once your kids have reached school age, they begin to hear a little more about the world around them. Basic elementary school lessons typically include ancient Rome, the Colosseum , and gladiators, says Biggs Bradley, so a trip to Rome "will further engage them in the touring, since what they've learned in school will be brought to life."

There are countless exciting activities available for kiddos, and even picky eaters will find something they love in the boot-shaped country known for pizza, pasta, and gelato. "Pizza- and gelato-making experiences are a must," says Access Italy CEO Simone Amorico, who adds that kids love making ceramics and mosaics, too. He says other can't-miss activities include, "treasure hunts in the Vatican and the Villa Borghese, where they can also ride a four-wheel bike and stop for picnics."

Meanwhile, the fairytale-like Hotel Eden is an ideal base for Roman excursions, and it's not far from Teatro Verde, a theater for puppet shows and musicals, the Explora Children's Museum, and Bartolucci, a traditional wooden toy shop where you can find Pinocchio. "At this age, a typical family tour can be boring, as they tune out and can't wait to leave," says Scott Dunn USA president John Spence. "We had our kids attend a Roman gladiator school so they could gain hands-on lessons in fighting techniques and reenact life as an ancient gladiator — they loved it."

Tweens (Ages 11-13): A Montana Dude Ranch

Between the ages of 11 and 13, kids, or tweens, will likely want some autonomy, but they also need boundaries. A dude ranch or guest ranch encompassing hundreds of acres of pristine, wide-open space makes for a wonderful compromise.

"When kids are in their early teenage years, there is nothing better than a vacation that combines adventure with something new," says Spence. "Watching our kids step outside of their element — horseback riding on mountainside cliffs or even just hiking in the beautiful Montana nature — is one of the best parts of being a parent."

Visiting a 10-square-mile property like The Ranch at Rock Creek — with a slew of included activities like fly fishing, cross-country mountain biking, photography classes, sapphire mining, and horse roping lessons — is quite a novelty for many families. Most kids, however unique their interests, will be able to find something they are stoked about. The younger ones can also attend Flint's Forest Rangers Kids Club (ages four to 12), which offers pre-booked excursions such as wildlife spotting and treasure hunting. Families can come together in the property's western-style bar for bowling, table tennis, and karaoke, too.

And perhaps the best part about Montana, home to dozens of guest ranches, is that it's gorgeous and fun year-round. It's a winter wonderland worthy of a snow globe and, at The Ranch at Rock Creek, cold-weather options include skiing (downhill and cross-country), sledding, ice skating, hockey, and snowmobiling. Expect smiles 24/7.

Teenagers (Ages 14-17): An African Safari

"It is all about the thrill of experiencing something so different from what they've ever seen before," says Extraordinary Journeys ' founder and CEO Elizabeth Gordon of taking the kids on an African safari.

Biggs Bradley adds, "Safaris are a huge area of passion for me, and I was eager to open my kids' eyes to them when they were young. The sweet spot to take children on their first safari is after 14 because by then you can ensure they will really remember the experience. They'll be able to sit in a vehicle for long periods of time and likely won't be nervous about sleeping in a tent." Plus, many camps also don't allow kids under 12 years old.

A safari is a special experience for a family to encounter together, witnessing an exciting array of animals in their natural habitat — not to mention beautiful traditions and cultures, too. "An amazing guide will teach [the kids] about tracking, get them to think like a detective, and figure out what may have happened in the area by looking at footprints," says Gordon.

As Biggs Bradley says of Kenya, "Cultural exchange is key. The opportunity for kids to meet and interact with Maasai people, for example, can be an incredibly memorable part." Properties like Sirikoi , Basecamp Explorer 's circuit, and Angama Mara provide beautiful immersion along with amazing sightings of the world's rarest species.

Another perk? Since Wi-Fi is often sparse or unavailable, families can unplug from technology and simply enjoy being together out in the bush. For even more adventure, consider adding on gorilla trekking in Rwanda (the pricier option) or Uganda (more affordable), especially if doing a safari in nearby Kenya.

College (Ages 18-21): Queenstown, New Zealand

Once kids have gone off to college, it can take a pretty enticing offer to pull them back into the fold for family vacations. Queenstown, New Zealand, is one such attractive proposition. Known as the "adventure capital of the world," it's the kind of all-season destination that offers a scene for everyone — plus, English is the main language spoken.

The birthplace of bungee jumping is home to countless thrills, from exhilarating jumps ( AJ Hackett Bungy from the Kawarau Bridge is the classic choice) to parasailing on bright blue Lake Wakatipu. "Families will love helicopter flights over the Tasman Glacier and along Milford Sound on a sunny winter day, or careening around the bends of the Shotover Canyon on a jet boat in the summer," says Gordon of this "quintessential playground."

For anyone who's not quite as much an adrenaline junkie, there are many hiking — known there as tramping — trails that reveal jaw-dropping panoramas. "New Zealand is a dream destination for a family who loves nature, landscapes, and, of course, adventure," says Biggs Bradley, adding that skydiving, rafting, caving, and fly fishing are also draws.

In the winter, Queenstown's mountains are home to epic skiing and snowboarding. The town itself is walkable and safe, with plenty of places to enjoy a sundowner, lovely meal, or the nightlife. With the kids becoming adults (and the local drinking age being 18), there's also the option to take a day for wine tasting at some of the island country's top vineyards in the Central Otago region about 45 minutes away by car.

To allow your young adults some freedom, try a couple rooms at the boutique QT Queenstown , which is full of art, quirk, and large windows showcasing the Remarkables mountain range and Lake Wakatipu.

College Graduates (Age 22 and Up): Japan

By the time they've graduated college, many young adults will be ready to dive, respectfully, into a culture as exquisite as Japan's. "Japan is a country you want to travel to when you know your family will truly be able to appreciate what it has to offer," says Biggs Bradley, pointing out the opportunity for deep cultural immersion in food and drink, museums, temples, and shrines.

In a place where there's a fine art to everything from making tea and arranging flowers to lighting incense, it's best to ensure all parties are prepared to be well-behaved and gracious guests. A more mature — or adventurous — palate is also helpful for fully enjoying all of Japan's culinary treasures. Spence calls it "the perfect place for post-graduates who want new experiences," and Japan certainly excels at providing those.

Tokyo is a dynamic urban center where exploration yields unimaginable exploits. A different energy pervades Kyoto's quieter neighborhoods of Buddhist temples, Shinto shrines, bamboo forests, and famous geisha districts. ( InsideJapan offers wonderful private tours led by local experts.) "Our kids loved trains, making the bullet train around Japan one of the best parts of the trip," says Spence.

Getting around is indeed a no-brainer — trains and buses are always precisely on time, people are friendly and willing to help despite language barriers, and there are many appealing regions (prefectures) with special attributes, such as places known for sake, hot springs (onsen), and art.

Staying in a traditional ryokan is a must, and the fourth-generation Japanese-owned Hoshinoya portfolio includes several luxury options. One of the most memorable additions to the cities, however, is a couple of days near Mount Fuji, where Hoshinoya Fuji offers spectacular views of the elusive volcano alongside exceptional local cuisine and rugged outdoorsy activities, including a food smoking workshop, canoeing, and e-biking. At the end of the day, there's no better place for a globe-trotting family to relax and share stories than around a bonfire under the stars, with live acoustic music, s'mores, and Japanese whisky.

Traveling with Just One Child – The Mommy and Me 10 Year Old Birthday Trips

Traveling with Just One Child - The Mommy and Me 10 Year Old Birthday Trips luxury travel mom

Long before I was Luxury Travel Mom, I started the 10 Year Old Birthday Trip tradition.

In a stroke of brilliance I decided that if I was taking a child on their once in a lifetime excursion, I wasn’t just doing it for me, I was being a great mom.

What started out as a boondoggle (if I’m being honest), has turned in to something more meaningful than I ever anticipated. I wish I could say I had consulted child psychologists and Harvard admissions counselors, but 10 was dumb luck and it’s been perfect.

Why ten is a great age

  • They are young enough to take out of school without ruining their pre-college GPA.
  • They still think you know everything.
  • They are old enough to remember it forever.

So now, each of my children gets to go wherever they want when they turn ten. Yes, I am accepting adoption applications.

How to take them out of school

  • Tell the school, don’t ask. This is educational and no it can’t be done during break.
  • Actually make it educational (JJ’s trip to Rwanda is likely what got him IN to his private school, they made him an offer  during  his interview).
  • Take their work with you and carve an hour out of every day to do it so they don’t fall behind.

My best advice

  • Record every moment, video, photo, have them keep a diary.
  • Don’t feel guilty. Your other children and spouse will survive, despite what they say.
  • Plan, plan, plan. Include your child in the planning.

Wilson in Hawaii

Green Sea Turtles Big Island

Chance of a lifetime

Wilson chose Hawaii, but I fell in love.

We have communed with green sea turtles (the oldest creature on earth), swam with dolphins in the open sea, helicoptered over a volcano and waterfalls, and still have surfing lessons and Pearl Harbor waiting for us.

Our first day on the Big Island Wilson said “Mom, isn’t it great how we make each other’s dreams come true?”

While writing a story about bucket list travel I remembered how as a little girl I would call Pleasant Hawaiian Holidays and ask them to send me brochures. My parents couldn’t even afford to send me to the public swimming pool on Wednesdays, but I dreamed of Hawaii and squirreled away pamphlets under my canopy bed.

When we arrived at the Four Seasons in Haulalai and they put a lei around my neck, I found myself in tears. I hadn’t realized how much this trip meant to me too, but I think Wilson did.

Four Seasons Big Island

Wilson picks flowers for my hair every day

Hawaii

We swam in the “secret waterfall” shortly after this pic was taken.

Macie in Paris

Luxury Travel Mom

Ok, we ate a LOT in Paris.

On our first day in Paris, Macie said “Mom, the food is so much better here, and the shoes are cuter.” I have never been more proud. Really, we could have flown home right then, my job was done.

Her voice will never sound like this again, she doesn’t call me “mommy” anymore and neither of us will ever forget the day we spent at La Fete des Tuilieries (a summer carnival, but fabulously Parisian).

JJ in Rwanda

Luxury Travel Mom

No one has ever been this excited to see me before

Very few people have had the opportunity that JJ did when we visited Rwanda. First of all, he went to Rwanda, which is perfectly safe by the way. Ask him, he can explain their benevolent dictatorship form of government to you. He visited Partners in Health hospitals, learned to diagnose malaria, met the children we sponsor through World Vision, shopped in a local market and took a safari tour through the Akagera Game Park .

Luxury Travel Mom

Can you see them sizing him up? (also, this is our hotel, NOT the game park)

Shortly after this photo was taken, one of the baboons (likely the shifty looking one in the back) climbed IN to our car to steal my gluten free cereal. He climbed OVER JJ on his way in, and then back out. JJ had his best cocktail party story at 10.

keatonwaterslide

So where does Keaton, whose life is pretty much one big bucket list trip, want to go when he turns ten?

Space, of course. No sibling rivalry there. So watch your back Lance Bass.

Wilson and I are being hosted by the Four Seasons as I am writing a story for their magazine about educational Hawaii. None of our other trips were in any way sponsored, unless you count Jeff Evans, and he does.

Travel Better, Cheaper, Longer

10 Life Changing Moments from 10 Years as a Nomad

Matt Kepnes posing for a photo in Patagonia, Chile

Today marks exactly ten years I’ve been on the road . On July 26, 2006, I said goodbye to my dad, got in my car, and started my year-long journey around the world by first taking a road trip across the United States before heading to Europe.

Eighteen months later (six months later than planned), I finally came home.

Back home and broke, I got a temp job filling in for someone on maternity leave. There, sitting down in the office, I knew office and corporate life was not for me.

My soul burned to be back on the road.

I was a nomad now .

Travel was not done with me yet.

There was no going back.

So I did what anyone with no money or responsibility would do: I booked a flight and made plans to go away again.

Coming home felt stale to me . I yearned for the excitement of the road. That summer, I traveled to Europe , went back to Thailand where I taught English, and started putting time and effort into this website.

Now a decade has gone by.

The last ten years have been a long, winding road filled with one happy accident after another: from the people I met who got me excited about traveling, to the Thai classes I took that led to living in Bangkok, to the cubicle that got me to start this website, to becoming a travel writer .

It has been one exciting and unplanned adventure.

But ten years is a long time and, in the last year, I’ve begun to (finally) wind down my nomadic ways. After many false starts,  I planted roots in Austin . I no longer plan multi-month trips on the road and I’m now focusing on the next chapter of my life: part-time traveler, hostel owner, cook, reader, and early riser (but still international man of mystery).

As one chapter comes to a close and another opens, I want to share my favorite stories from the last ten years on the road:

1. Making Friends on a Road Trip

Nomadic Matt posing with friends in Sedona, AZ while on a road trip

That is, until I entered a hostel in Tucson.

There I met a Brit (also named Matt) in my dorm. We realized we were both going to the Grand Canyon, and so we ended up hiking it together .

Back at the hostel, we picked up another Brit named Jonathan, meet some cool people on trip to Sedona, and, in a hostel outside Albuquerque, an Austrian named Vera. Together we drove through New Mexico and Colorado before splitting up in Boulder.

I remember that road trip with great fondness — singing ’90s pop songs, sharing each other’s music collections, the night out where we convinced some college students I was Australian, the giant meals we cooked, and the explorations we had together.

It was this experience that finally helped me become comfortable saying hello to strangers and making friends.

2. Living on Ko Lipe

Nomadic Matt posing with his friends on Ko Lipe, Thailand

While it’s a big tourist destination now, back then it was a sleepy little place with one nice resort, a few bungalows, and limited electricity. Though you could see the island was going to be the next Phi Phi (one massively overdeveloped place), in that moment, it was still paradise.

I went there to meet a friend. On the boat ride over, I bonded with Pat (an older Irish guy) and Paul and Jane (a British couple). I somehow managed to lose my flip-flops even before we got to the island and decided to go barefoot during my stay. “It will only be a couple of days,” I said.

Those couple of days turned into a month.

Pat, Paul, Jane, my friend Olivia, and I met a few other people who never seemed to leave the island too, and we formed a tight-knit group . During the day, we would lounge on the beach, play backgammon, snorkel, or head to one of the other islands in the national park.

At night, we would dine on cheap seafood, drink beer, and make up beach games until the lights went out. We spent Christmas together, gave each other gifts, and bonded with the locals, who invited us into their homes and sparked my interest in learning the Thai language.

But, when my visa finally expired and I had to run to Malaysia to get a new one, I had to say goodbye. It was bittersweet, but all good things come to an end sometime. (I did end up running into all of them around Thailand in the months thereafter.)

This experience has remained with me forever and taught me that the best things on the road happen when you least expect them.

3. The Shit Story

An empty hostel dorm room in Spain with bunk beds

Out of thousands of nights in a hostel, this was the grossest thing that has ever happened to me .

Afterward, I vowed to only stay in dorm rooms if I absolutely had no choice — and definitely not in a hostel with a reputation for partying.

4. Living in Amsterdam

A beautiful bridge over the canal in Amsterdam

Greg and I always seemed to be at the casino at the same time, and he kept inviting me to join him for private poker games he ran. When you have a lot of someone else’s money in front of you, you tend to have a suspicious eye when they invite you out later.

But the more I learned about him and how people talked to him, the more I realized he was just a good guy and that this was his way of welcoming me to town. Eventually I said yes, and his social group became my social group while I was there. We would eat, drink, and play poker.

They taught me Dutch, introduced me to Dutch food, and showed me the sights of Amsterdam .

Sadly, Greg was killed in a robbery a few months after I left Amsterdam, but my experiences with him taught me to be more open and welcoming of strangers and that people aren’t always ill-intentioned.

5. La Tomatina

Hundreds of people covered in tomatoes at the La Tomatina tomato-throwing festival in Spain

Entering my hostel dorm, I met two Aussies, two Americans, and a guy from Malaysia . We were going to be my roommates for the next week, as the hostel required everyone to stay four nights during the festival.

In that time, we six just hit it off. All of us quickly bonded and spent the next week having the time of our lives, pelting tomatoes at each other, drinking sangria, nursing hangovers with gelato, and being led around by Quincy, our Malay friend with impeccable Spanish.

Deciding the fun shouldn’t end, we kept traveling together to Barcelona .

There, I remember one girl joining our crew and mentioning how it was so weird that such a geographically diverse group was so close. “How did you all meet each other?” “We just met last week!” we replied. “Really? I thought you guys had known each other for years!”

In the years since, though we don’t see each other often due to the geographic distance between us, we’ve stayed connected. When we do visit each other, it’s like we’re back in Spain and no time has passed at all.

When you click with people, you click with people. No matter where I go, I carry that time with me.

6. Learning to Scuba Dive in Fiji

Matt putting on his scuba gear while sitting in a boat

There, my friend pressured me into scuba diving. “You’ve always wanted to do it. It’s cheap to learn here. Stop being a wimp!”

He was right.

I had no excuse, so I signed up for a certification class . However, I was nervous. “What if I drown? Can you really breathe underwater?” During my first dive, I was hitting that oxygen tank like a stoner hits a bong! I went through the tank in under 30 minutes, when it should normally have lasted close to an hour.

And — though my dive partner kicked my regulator out of my mouth and I almost drowned — learning to scuba dive was one of the greatest experiences of my life. Seeing the ocean from below the surface was earth-shattering. I had never been surrounded by so much natural beauty and diversity. It was definitely one of those “wow!” moments in life.

After that experience, I decided I should be a little bit more adventurous. It’s led me to try rollercoasters more (I hate heights), helicopter rides (seriously, I hate heights), and canyon swings (fuck heights); attempt more adventure sports; and get outdoors more (nature is too wonderful not to).

( P.S. – Watch me scream like a baby in this video on my canyon swing.)

7. Safari in Africa

The sweeping, empty dunes of the the African desert in Namibia

Like scuba diving, it was just one of those “wow!” moments, when you realize how wonderful life and nature are. Being in Africa was an incredible adventure , and its beauty and the hospitality of its people have stuck with me ever since.

8. Living in Bangkok

The massive and historic Golden Palace in Bangkok, Thailand

However, I had just decided to extend my travels and go to Europe the next year, so, low on funds, I needed more money! I decided to find a job, as I had heard teaching English paid a lot money . At the same time, a friend found out I was staying longer and introduced me to one of his friends in Bangkok, who introduced me to more friends.

Suddenly, I found myself living in an apartment with a circle of friends, and having a girlfriend and a life. It wasn’t easy at first, but the longer I stayed, the more I got out of the house and the more of a resident of Bangkok I became.

It was this experience that taught me I could make it anywhere — that I was a capable, independent person who could start a life from scratch.

Because if I could start a life in a place like Bangkok, I could start a life anywhere.

9. Finding Family in Ios

A great group of friends with Nomadic Matt in Ios, Greece

Our days were spent on the beach, we hosted BBQs for dinner, and our nights were a blur. As my newfound family found jobs at the bars on the island, I wrote and blogged. It was so much fun that when I found out most were returning to Ios the following year, I did too .

Ios, to me, is that wild, carefree summer where you feel the world is your oyster and nothing can stop you and your friends from conquering it.

Though the years have passed, I still stay in touch with many of the people I met in 2009, running into them in NYC , Australia , Hong Kong , Scotland , and various other parts of the world.

10. Patagonia

Nomadic Matt hiking in Patagonia, Chile

After trying to find a balance between work and travel , I finally cracked. I could not manage both well at once and started to get bad anxiety. It changed how I travel: no longer do I travel and work. If I try to do both at once, one will always suffer.

So now, if I’m in a new place, I’m in the new place! The computer is away. I’m there to explore, not work.

It was a hard lesson to learn, and it will be interesting to see how it plays out over longer trips, but with my eye twitch gone and the panic attacks subsiding, I’m in a much better place.

I’ve created more memories than I can remember in the last ten years. I often find myself remembering something that has found its way back from the dark recesses of my mind and saying, “Oh yeah, that did happen. Damn. How did I forget something like that?”

It often feels like my mind is running out of room.

I count myself lucky to have been able to experience all I have in the last ten years. Not everyone gets a chance to travel , especially for as long as I have. I’m often amazed at the trajectory my life has taken by simply saying “I quit” one day .

Was it always fated to be this way? Did the universe conspire to make this happen?

Or was it simply chance that brought me to where I am? Was this in me the whole time, and I just had to realize my potential?

As the poem goes, “two roads diverged in the woods” — and the one I took did make all the difference.

I don’t know what that other road was like and, frankly, I don’t care. I never wonder about it. I never think “what if?” The road I’m on is not one straight path upward but it’s a better road than I could ever imagine.

How To Apply For China's Tourist Visa: Easy Step-By-Step Guide

I had never been as frustrated with travel planning as when I was applying for my 10-year tourist visa to China this year.

I didn’t blame the fact that China required a visa, I blamed the confusing process of how to apply. The lack of a step-by-step guide for people in the USA mixed with the confusing lawyer-like language used in the China Embassy’s official documents = pure confusion on what to do.

After scouring the web to piece together the full process, I finally set out to apply for the 10-year tourist visa. In less than a week of applying online , I picked up my visa and was good to travel for the next 10 years!

Looking back on it, I’m glad I got it over with early on in my travel planning process. I would’ve hated to have to deal with all of this 1-2 weeks before my trip!

For reference, I applied for the 10-year tourist visa in April, but my trip wasn’t until November.

Once you figure out HOW to apply and actually submit your application, it’s really not too bad. Especially since I’ve created this easy-to-understand guide to walk you through all the steps you need to apply for your very own China tourist visa.

NOTE: This guide is for US citizens applying for the tourist visa (L) within the USA. I don’t have experience with any other countries/nationalities, thanks!

Before Applying For The China Tourist Visa: Things You Need To Know

  • The first and most important thing I need to mention: there is no way of applying for a China visa completely online . You will need to physically provide your passport to a visa office at some point. There’s no way around this, and that’s because they need to stick your new China visa onto one of the pages in your passport.
  • You must start by completing a visa application form to apply for a China visa. This can be done online or on paper.
  • You’ll then need to submit your visa application form + supporting documents to a China Visa Application Service Center (this is a physical place). These are going to be at a Chinese embassy or consulate somewhere in the USA. There are multiple locations.
  • You can’t just choose any location you feel like. You have to go to the one that services your state/area. More on this later.
  • a recently-taken color photo behind a white wall (can be uploaded digitally if filling out the application online, or a physical photo if applying on paper application)
  • a valid passport
  • printed out visa application + confirmation letter
  • other supporting documents (more on this later)
  • You’ll need to visit the visa office twice: first to submit your application, then again in 3-4 days to pick up your passport (with your brand new China visa inside).
  • You can apply in person for yourself, have someone else turn in the forms for you / pick up your visa for you, or pay a travel agency to do it all for you.
  • That’s the general overview of the process. Let’s dive into the details a bit more.

Step 1: Find a consulate location that services your area.

The first thing you’ll want to do is locate which Consulate General location you’ll have to go to in order to apply for (and pick up) your visa. You can use this link to see all the current locations.

You CANNOT pick one randomly, you can only go to the one that services your area.

So how do you know which consulate you have to go to? Locate where you live on this list or this list . Your state/region will be listed under one of the consulates. That’s the one you’ll need to go to.

For example, I live in Northern California, so I had to go to the Consulate General in San Francisco . If you live in Utah, your assigned location is the Embassy in Washington DC.

Also, note that the area formerly serviced by the Houston consulate is temporarily being serviced by the Embassy in the United States (DC location) as the one in Houston closed down.

Step 2: Fill out the COVA application

Start your online application . Go to the China Online Visa Application (COVA) and fill out the application using your information.

You’ll be asked all kinds of questions: personal information, the type of visa you’re applying for, how long you want it for, names of family members (parents), work history, emergency contact info, where you’re going to be traveling to in China and on what dates, where you’ve traveled to in the last 12 months, etc.

I would allot 30 minutes of your time to fill out the whole application. It felt like forever when I was applying, but I think it took me about 30 minutes. You can always save your progress if you need to look up information and revisit the application process at a later time.

Just be sure to note your application ID so you can pull it up later.

I’ll give you some pointers on how I filled out my application because some questions were quite confusing.

  • One of the first things you need to do is upload your passport photo. I took a selfie against a wall and used Lightroom to turn my gray background white. The system accepted the photo. (Background must be white!)
  • For Given name(s), it should include your first name followed by any middle name(s). It needs to match the name on the passport.
  • For National ID number, I applied with N/A
  • For Type of Visa, I selected (L) Tourism. Here are the rest of the visa types for reference.
  • For Visa Duration, I entered 120 months with a maximum stay of 60 days. I also chose “multiple” for the number of entries.
  • For Itinerary information, I ballparked my travel dates from city to city (Hong Kong – Xi’An – Chengdu – Chongqing) as I had not yet booked my flights, but I gave the best estimate I could based on where we were in the trip planning process.
  • Since they are no longer requiring flight confirmations and hotel confirmations, the trip itinerary section doesn’t need to be very detailed. Addresses of hotels didn’t seem to even be required fields (I filled out half of them for the ones we had already booked).
  • For Work Experience info, I did the best I could but it’s okay not to be exact. For example, I included my previous employer’s general phone number instead of my supervisor’s number. You can also provide a quick description of your job duties (my example: “blogger/travel writer”). No need to go into detail.

Normally visa applications take 3-4 days to process, but you can specify in this application to expedite it (2-3 days).

I chose not to expedite my application. I applied on a Monday and received a pick-up date of Thursday .

How quickly do you need the visa?

  • If you live in the area and can get to the visa office pretty easily, no need to expedite.
  • If you’re traveling from out-of-state to apply, you’ll probably want to expedite to save on an extra night’s worth of hotel costs.
  • If your trip’s departure is like next week, you’ll probably want to expedite to be on the safe side!

Should you apply for a 3-month visa or a 10-year visa? The visa process is the same regardless if you apply for 3 months or 10 years. Moreover, it’s currently the same price!

My entire family and I went for the 10-year option as we knew we’d be visiting China a lot once my parents retired!

Step 3: Print out/gather all your documents.

Once you finish filling out the application, you’ll get a confirmation letter that looks like it’s got QR codes on it. You’ll have to print this out along with a few other things to bring to the visa office.

Here’s the full list that was required of me when I was applying (April 2024). Be sure to check for the latest requirements !!!

  • Confirmation letter – you need to print and sign this
  • Completed visa application – you need to print and sign this (on the last page)
  • Your physical passport
  • Photocopy of your passport’s bio page (the page that shows the photo and the document number)
  • Proof of residence documentation (a photocopy of your ID, bank statement, utility bill, etc.)
  • I did single-sided printing and printed pages in color just in case.
  • When you print the visa application, make sure to include the confirmation page as the first page.
  • I did not bring a physical copy of my photo since I had uploaded it along with my online application. This was not asked for at the visa center either.

Step 4: Show up at the visa center.

At the time of writing, you can’t make appointments online. They are taking walk-ins only.

When you are looking for the address of where to go, look for the consulate’s Visa Application Office , not the general Embassy address.

For example, I GPS’ed to the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in San Francisco . Once I got to the door (on Laguna St.), I saw a sign letting visa application visitors know that the Visa Application Office was on the street perpendicular to where I was (Geary Blvd.).

Depending on the time you visit, be prepared to wait.

I showed up at 9:15am on a Monday (15 minutes before they opened) and there were at least 70 people in line in front of me. Despite the crazy-sounding line, it didn’t take as long as I had anticipated! I was out of there by 10:55am.

PRO TIP: For the SF location, show up near closing time as opposed to first thing in the morning. I asked the security guard when the best time to visit was for the shortest lines, and he told me “at the end of the day, right before we close”.

This may vary by location, so take that tip with a grain of salt! But when I went to pick up my visa 3 days later, I showed up at 1:50pm (the visa office closed at 2:30pm) — and he was right — no lines! There must have been 10 people in the entire office compared to my initial visit where there were 100+ people waiting at the same time.

Once you’re there, hand all of your documents to the visa processer. He/she will look your application over (rather quickly) and make sure you have all the necessary docs. They will then take all of your documents (including your passport) for processing/approval.

If all looks good, you’ll get a slip of paper (pick-up slip) telling you exactly what date to come back to pick up your passport. You can come anytime on that date. Again, no appointment is needed.

My experience: For proof of residence, I had actually just brought my physical driver’s license instead of making a photocopy of it. The lady told me I had to go to make a photocopy of it, then go back to her window once I was done with that.

Luckily, the office had a set of photocopiers (costs $0.25 per page) as well as passport photobooths (for people who forget to bring photos for their applications). Bring quarters or some dollar bills in case you need to use the copy machine.

Step 5: Pick up your passport.

After a few days, it’s time to go back to pick up your passport. When you go to pick up your passport, you will pay for the visa at this time.

There’s a separate line that moves much faster for passport pick-ups. For my pick-up, I was in and out of the visa office in under 10 minutes.

Since a lot of people applying for China visas are from out of state, they often worry about how long it takes to pick up their passports.

Again, in general, your passport will be ready in 2-4 days, depending on if you choose expedited service.

Also, you don’t even need to be the one showing up at the visa office! Per the Los Angeles consulate site , “visa applications may be submitted in person by the applicant or someone else with the passport and all supporting documents”.

Once you flip through your passport booklet, you’ll find a brand-new visa glued to one of your passport pages. Viola ! You are ready to go to China!

Lastly, stay updated with the latest info!

The latest info/updates will always be on the China Visa Applications website . I know, it’s hard to read because of how outdated and simple the site looks, but there’s always useful info on there.

Like when I was applying, I was able to see that they had recently reduced the visa fee to $140, regardless of how long the visa’s duration is. And that at the end of 2023, they had actually simplified the visa application to not require flight confirmations, proof of hotel reservation, or invitation letters.

Meanwhile, all the other outdated websites and blog posts out there mentioned needing an invitation letter.

To be clear, as of April 2024 (when I wrote this), invitation letters are NOT required.

Always refer to the China Visa Applications website for the latest info!

Hope this step-by-step guide to applying for the China tourist visa was helpful. You can message me if you have any additional questions about applying for a tourist visa as a US citizen.

Little Palm Island, Florida

Little Palm Island, Florida one year anniversary trip idea

You don't need to book an international trip to indulge at a private island resort. The Florida Keys offers the sole spot in the country— Little Palm Island —and it's only accessible by seaplane or boat. Fly into Miami or Fort Lauderdale and make the scenic drive down the Overseas Highway before hopping on the motor yacht over to Little Torch Key, where this top-rated adults-only paradise will have you swooning at first sight.

Things to Do: The beauty of a private island is that you can do as much or little as you like. Dive or snorkel at nearby Looe Key Reef—rated one of the best spots in the country, since it's part of the world's third-largest barrier reef—or set off on a sunset sail with Champagne. What could be a more picture-perfect way to toast to your first wedding anniversary?

Palm Springs, California

Palm Springs, California one year anniversary travel guide

Landing in Palm Springs International Airport with its retro vibe will quickly get you on vacation mode. A quick drive to downtown and you're in the mecca of mid-century modern architecture (it's worth booking a tour to hear the history). The towering palm trees and surrounding peaks make Palm Springs one of the most Instagrammable spots in the country, but if you'd prefer a digital detox while celebrating your anniversary, there are plenty of places here with a focus on wellness—plus nearby, off-grid locales like Joshua Tree that are great for stargazing.

Things to Do: Couples will find tons of activities like tennis, golf, pétanque and even English croquet throughout Palm Springs. Of course relaxing poolside after a treatment at the spa is one of the more popular ways to pass the day in the desert. If you want to get out and explore, Coachella Valley is carved with hikes for all levels, plus fantastic trails for horseback riding.

Places to Stay: Parker Palm Springs is one of the top-of-the-line properties in the heart of Palm Springs, with everything from a fire circle to hammocks hanging in the trees along the scenic paths winding through the gardens. The nearby desert oasis of Sensei Porcupine Creek sprawls across 230 acres and offers top-notch resort amenities like golf, tennis and an expansive spa menu.

Amangiri, Utah

Amangiri, Utah one year anniversary travel guide

Utah may not be high on your list of places to visit in the US (although it's a dream for adventurous couples!), but Amangiri is a destination of its own. A four-hour drive from Las Vegas , the five-star spot makes desert living look (and feel) chic. Modernist suites and tented pavilions blend into the backdrop of the "original" Wild West's red rock, lunar-like landscape. Think of this as a very design-savvy version of a safari, with sky terraces and fire pits ready for an evening of stargazing.

Things to Do: Sitting on thousands of square miles at the gateway to national parks like the Grand Canyon and Zion, couples can set off on guided trail hikes or via ferratas up peaks to panoramic viewpoints. Another unique way to explore the landscape: horseback riding along the ridges and canyons.

New Orleans, Louisiana

New Orleans, Louisiana one year anniversary trip

If you're looking for a city that is festive year-round, the Big Easy is your place. Even outside of major events like Mardi Gras and the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival , you'll still be serenaded by street performers and big brass bands in the French Quarter, where legendary music clubs like The Spotted Cat are open all week long. A cocktail capital in its own right (this is where the Sazerac and Vieux Carré were born), couples can linger in prohibition era-inspired bars like The Roosevelt before indulging in some of the best cuisine in the South at restaurants like Compère Lapin and Zasu .

Things to Do: Two of the main draws to New Orleans are music and food, so eat your way around the city's local specialties like po'boys, muffuletta sandwiches, beignets and bananas foster. Catch a jazz show at Preservation Hall or somewhere more low-key like the patio of Maple Leaf Bar .

Places to Stay: In the French Quarter, Hotel Monteleone is brimming with Old World charm — plus it's home to one of the most iconic bars in the country, The Carousel Bar (it even rotates!). For something on the boutique side, book a room at Ace Hotel New Orleans , which features a packed calendar of programming that includes art exhibitions, jazz brunches and DJ sessions.

An anniversary is a fantastic excuse to set off on a trip abroad — especially when it's your first year together as a married couple. Whether you want a quick jaunt to Europe or plan to spend more time exploring somewhere exotic, these locales are sure to up the romance factor.

Paris, France

Paris, France one year anniversary trip abroad

Paris is in the spotlight this year as host of the summer Olympics, but even if your anniversary doesn't fall around this time, there's no bad moment to visit the City of Light. In spring, tulips are blooming in the gardens and the city is reawakening, while in summer, sidewalks transform into terraces where you can sip wine until sunset — which isn't until 9 or 10 p.m. — before heading to a tapas bar or tasting-menu restaurant.

Things to Do: Museum hop around landmarks like the Louvre and Musée d'Orsay ; pop a bottle of Champagne while cruising along the Seine ; snap selfies up in the Eiffel Tower ; or treat yourself to a Michelin meal at one of the gastronomic hotspots like Plénitude .

Places to Stay: New hotels are popping up almost weekly, but you can't go wrong with legends like Le Meurice , Le Bristol , Ritz Paris and Cheval Blanc Paris , or a stylish newcomer like Hotel Hana or Hotel Norman .

Marrakech, Morocco

Marrakech, Morocco one year anniversary trip abroad travel guide

The former imperial city is a feast for the senses with its palaces, mosques and markets lining the maze-like alleys of the medina. For couples, there are plenty of ways to soak up the vibrant city's romance factor, whether it's with a traditional cooking class perfecting tagine, an afternoon at the hammam or a hot air balloon ride over the nearby Agafay desert, where you can glamp in a tented camp and camel ride to a sunset dinner .

Things to Do: Stroll through the souk with a local chef to source ingredients for a cooking class in a traditional Moroccan home; relax with a spa day at La Mamounia ; take a guided shopping tour of the souk; or enjoy a lavish Sunday brunch at Selman Marrakech , where the hotel's Arabian thoroughbred horses (housed in onsite Jacques Garcia-designed stables) put on an equestrian show.

Places to Stay: For an experience dripping in luxury, look no further than La Mamounia , Royal Mansour , La Maison Arabe or Selman Marrakech .

Bali, Indonesia

Bali, Indonesia one year anniversary trip

Unwind and reset with your new partner on the "Island of the Gods." With its volcanic, black-sand beaches, rugged coastline overlooking world-renowned surf breaks, lush temple-filled jungles and laid-back beach town vibes, there's a reason why Bali tops the list of romantic locales in Asia. Plus, luxurious options for hotels and villas are much more affordable here than other parts of the world, so you can get all the perks of a five-star spot at a fraction of the price.

Things to Do: Wellness is a huge focus on the island, so if you're looking to relax with your partner and try something new like vibrational sound therapy or chakra balancing, stay somewhere like Mandapa, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve , whose daily program of activities is like a built-in retreat (plus, the villas with their private plunge pools and views of the rice paddies, rainforest or river are some of the most spectacular on the island). Skirt the coast on a temple-hopping tour or spend a day exploring waterfalls and rice paddies on a private tour .

Places to Stay: In addition to Mandapa, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve , you'll find luxe lodgings at Bulgari Resort Bali , Capella Ubud , Hoshinoya Bali , Potato Head Suites , Four Seasons Resort Bali at Jimbaran Bay and Raffles Bali Hotel .

Istanbul, Turkey

Istanbul, Turkey one year anniversary trip guide

Over the past few years, Istanbul has been undergoing a renaissance with buzzy new boutique hotels, which include the addition of a Soho House in a historic palazzo. The city beautifully blends its historic neighborhoods and landmarks with more modern arrivals, so while you'll feel like you're stepping back in time to the Roman-era chariot races (you'll still see Egyptian obelisks), hip rooftop bars and sleek waterfront lounges give Istanbul an air akin to major metropolises like London and New York.

Things to Do: Admire the architecture of landmarks like the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia on a guided tour of the Old City; get a feast for the senses strolling through the Spice Market or haggling for rugs and lanterns at the Grand Bazaar ; cruise the Bosphorus by luxury yacht ; or visit a historic hammam like Kiliç Ali Pasa .

Places to Stay: Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at the Bosphorus unfolds along the river in a restored, 19th-century Ottoman palace and features a traditional Turkish bath and the best Sunday brunch in the city.

You splurged on an over-the-top wedding and indulged in a dream honeymoon. Your first anniversary should be just as special, but that doesn't mean you need to dip into your savings for a trip to remember. From swoon-worthy beaches and rainforest treks to wine tastings and castle stays, your friends won't believe that you actually saved money on one of thes budget-friendly trips .

San Juan, Puerto Rico

San Juan, Puerto Rico one year anniversary budget friendly trip

A no-passport-required trip, Puerto Rico is one of the most underrated spots in the country (it's a territory, technically, but it still counts!). Offering plenty of Old World charm, buzzy cocktail bars, gorgeous boutique hotels and beaches and rainforest as impressive as other parts of the Caribbean, this island escape is one that offers couples romance at every turn — but at a price point not designed for tourists.

Things to Do: After sipping craft cocktails at La Factoría and hiking through the El Yunque rainforest, ferry over to the island of Vieques, where wild horses roam free and you can kayak through the brightest bioluminescent bay in the world.

Places to Stay: Stay oceanfront at Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve , which dates back to the 1950s and sits on 50 acres of the Rockefeller Estate (where the original plan was that no building would be taller than a palm tree!) or the sunflower-yellow, 17th-century Hotel El Convento , a former convent and landmark in Old San Juan.

Grenada budget one year anniversary trip

The "Spice Island" in the West Indies doesn't get the same love as its neighbors, which works in travelers' favor, since you can find untouched beaches, more than a dozen waterfalls, reef and wreck dives, and the world's first underwater sculpture park all a short flight away from hubs like New York and Miami.

Things to Do: Swim in waterfalls and tour a chocolate factory on a half-day tour ; sample the local cuisine and spices on a culinary excursion ; or snorkel around some of the hundred sculptures in the underwater park in Moliniere Bay.

Places to Stay: Tucked between jade-colored water and rainforests, Mount Cinnamon's hillside villas and suites show off some of the best views of the island — and you can snorkel or dive right from the shore. An upscale spot on Grand Anse Beach, Silversands Resort offers a mix of super modern suites and contemporary beachfront or oceanview villas with plunge pools.

Finger Lakes, New York

Finger Lakes, New York budget one year anniversary trip idea

Set off on a trip through wine country in a region that's slowly gaining popularity but still far from the tourist-filled buses of Napa. An easy drive from New York City or another metropolis in the northeast, you'll have your pick of more than 140 wineries — plus fantastic farm-to-table restaurants and microbreweries. Accommodation options are no less charming, from lodges and B&Bs to Victorian-style castles.

Things to Do: The many state parks throughout the region offer plenty of outdoor activities for all seasons, from snowmobiling and cross-country skiing in winter to camping, hiking, boating and biking in warmer months. Visit some of the area's wineries or breweries on a wine trail or tour with someone else doing the driving, so you can sit back and enjoy what you're sipping.

Places to stay: Boasting its own winery and craft beer, Belhurst Castle is a romantic spot for couples who want Old World flair (think tower suites and vaulted ceilings with chandeliers), while Firelight Camps is a great glamping option with safari-style tents and optional experiences like forest bathing waterfall hikes and mushroom foraging walks.

After wedding and honeymoon planning, your first year together is cause for celebration but also an anniversary that calls for rest and relaxation. For a wallet-free getaway (no worrying about going over budget here!), all-inclusive resorts are the way to go. But don't think that means you'll be limited to buffets and swim-up bars — the newest crop of all-inclusive resorts include everything from overwater bungalows to private island paradises.

Kamalame Cay, Bahamas

The arrival via seaplane into Kamalame Cay , off the coast of Andros Island, is just as much part of the experience as the 96-acre private island itself. Home to the only overwater spa in the Bahamas, the family-run (and dog-friendly!) island off the world's third-largest Great Barrier Reef is a luxurious way to celebrate your first year together — and can even double as a delayed honeymoon if you've been too busy settling into your new life together to officially take one.

Ambergris Cay, Turks & Caicos

At Ambergris Cay in Turks & Caicos, everything from private tennis pros and yoga instructors to fully stocked villas are part of the all-inclusive concept. Spend your days cruising the coast on a catamaran or trekking along one of the guided nature walks, which end at a romantic sunset viewpoint. S'mores and beach bonfires are a few of the perks of laidback island life here, but one of the highlights is a speedboat ride over to the floating tiki Hangover Bar on Little Ambergris Cay, where you can sip tropical cocktails while wading in the water near a private, powder-soft sandy beach.

Sandals Royal Caribbean, Jamaica

The first overwater bungalows and villas in the Caribbean, Sandals Royal Caribbean in Montego Bay has adopted the concept popular in Bora Bora and brought it much, much closer. Fans of the all-inclusive brand know they'll be spoilt for choice when it comes to drinking and dining (nine restaurants, unlimited premium liquors, five bars, fully stocked in-room mini bars), but this more upscale property also comes with access to a private offshore island, complete with Bali-inspired beach cabanas, a Tahitian-style pool and the Jerk Shack, when you want to taste grilled specialties that are authentically Jamaican.

Mahoe Bay, Montego Bay, Jamaica

Club Med Seychelles, Seychelles

The archipelago off the coast of East Africa is as dreamy as islands can get: gemstone-colored water, secluded coves, beaches that look like they've been filtered for a postcard photo. Call the island of Sainte-Anne your home-away-from-home, sleeping at the luxe Club Med Seychelles Resort , where accommodations range from expansive villas perched on a hill with a private pool overlooking the sea and airy, sea-view suites that have a private mansion feel (plus a private terrace and pool).

Man shocked by $143,000 phone bill from overseas trip

A Florida man got the shock of his life by looking at his cellphone bill after a trip to Europe.

(Gray News) - When it comes to your phone plan, it helps to read the fine print. A Florida man learned that the hard way after he incurred a fortune in roaming charges during a trip to Europe.

Rene Remund told WFTS he was charged $143,269 for using 9.5 gigabytes of roaming data during a three-week trip to Switzerland.

He said he’s been a T-Mobile customer for more than 30 years and said he had been assured beforehand at a T-Mobile store that he would be “covered” while overseas.

At first, Remund said his eyes deceived him, as he thought the bill was for $143.

He said he got in touch with a representative, who assured him the bill was correct. At that point, he turned to legal help.

T-Mobile ended up crediting him for the account.

The Federal Communications Commission encourages people to know the details of their cellular plan coverage before they go on international trips, including whether your mobile phone will work there, what the roaming rates are and how to track your usage.

T-Mobile similarly encouraged its customers to check the details of their plans before setting out, as some older plans don’t include international roaming.

“If you’re not on a Go5G, Magenta, ONE Plan, Essentials, or a Simple Choice plan and you’ll be traveling outside the U.S., you can add World Class International Roaming to each line,” T-Mobile said on its webpage devoted to explaining its international roaming services . Customers can do this by managing their plan .

Other options include blocking international data and having a prepaid plan while overseas.

Donald Trump could face prison time if he is convicted in upcoming NY hush money trial

10 year trip

If former President Donald Trump is convicted on all counts in his New York criminal hush money trial that begins April 15, he could theoretically face more than a decade in prison.

But most legal experts who spoke to USA TODAY said such a dramatic outcome is unlikely. Instead, he would likely be sentenced to something between probation and four years in prison. And he would probably still be out, free to campaign for president as the presumptive or actual 2024 Republican nominee, while his all-but-certain appeal was pending.

Trump faces 34 felony counts of falsifying business records to cover up a hush money payment to adult film actress Stormy Daniels. Each count carries a maximum sentence of four years.

While Trump could in principle be sentenced to serve multiple counts consecutively, several experts said that is unlikely because he has no felony criminal record and the charges don't involve allegations of physical violence.

On the other hand, Trump has tested boundaries and feuded with the judge who may determine his fate.

Prep for the polls: See who is running for president and compare where they stand on key issues in our Voter Guide

Trump has antagonized Judge Juan Merchan

Trump's sentence would be decided by Judge Juan Merchan, who has grown exasperated by the former president's pretrial behavior. Merchan expanded a gag order this month after Trump attacked the judge's daughter on social media over her marketing work with Democratic candidates, including posting a photo of her. Merchan said Trump has a history of attacking the family members of judges and lawyers in his legal cases.

"The average observer, must now, after hearing Defendant's recent attacks, draw the conclusion that if they become involved in these proceedings, even tangentially, they should worry not only for themselves,  but for their loved ones as well ," Merchan wrote in his gag order decision .

John Moscow, a New York lawyer who spent 30 years in the Manhattan District Attorney's Office, told USA TODAY that type of behavior could worsen any sentence Trump faces.

"If I were representing somebody in (Trump's) position, I would suggest to him that the judge is the one who imposes sentence and he ought to be careful," Moscow said.

If Merchan did consider a hefty sentence, it wouldn't be the first time he has taken a harsh view about behavior in Trump's orbit.

In 2023, Merchan was forced to sentence former Trump Organization chief financial officer Allen Weisselberg to only five months in jail because Merchan had previously accepted a plea bargain agreement between Weisselberg and prosecutors specifying that jail term. Weisselberg pleaded guilty to tax and record falsification charges and agreed to testify against the Trump Organization at trial in order to get that sentence.

The judge said, however, that he "would be imposing a sentence much greater than that" had he not accepted the plea bargain before hearing all the evidence at the trial. Without the plea deal, Weisselberg could have faced many years in prison.

What is Trump charged with?

Trump has pleaded not guilty to all counts in the case, which focuses on whether he falsified business records to cover up reimbursements to his former lawyer, Michael Cohen, for a $130,000 hush money payment to Daniels. Daniels has said she had a sexual encounter with Trump soon after Melania Trump gave birth to their son, Barron Trump. Trump denies the claim.

In order to secure felony convictions, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg's office must convince a 12-person jury that Trump falsified the records in order to commit or conceal another crime. In this case, Bragg argues Trump was trying to conceal a federal campaign finance law violation by falsely recording his reimbursements to Cohen as payments for legal services. The federal violation was a limit-exceeding contribution to Trump's 2016 presidential campaign, as the payment was allegedly designed to keep Daniels' story from hurting the then-Republican nominee's election prospects. Bragg also alleges Trump was trying to conceal a plan to violate New York tax and election laws.

Nothing in the Constitution prevents Trump from becoming president even if he is convicted or sentenced to prison. If he won the election, however, courts may delay any prison time until after his term in office expires .

What is the maximum possible sentence?

The 34 felony counts Trump faces are classified as "Class E felonies" under New York law – the lowest level felony in the state. The maximum penalty on each count is four years of prison, and a judge would have discretion over whether to order Trump to serve sentences on each count at the same time or one after the other. However, New York caps such sentencing for Class E felonies at 20 years .

In addition, New York judges often impose sentencing ranges, where an incarcerated person becomes eligible for parole at the low end of the range. For Class E felonies, the lowest end of a range would be one-and-a-third years per count, while the highest would be four years. Good behavior in jail or prison can speed things up even more.

A sentence limited to probation?

Merchan would also have discretion to order a fixed sentence of less than those ranges, including probation.

That's what Mitchell Epner, a New York lawyer with decades of criminal law experience, expects would happen even if Trump were convicted on all counts. Epner noted the felony charges aren't violent and don't involve drugs.

"With a defendant who has no prior criminal record, my absolute expectation would be a sentence of probation," Epner told USA TODAY.

Epner wasn't alone in thinking that could be the sentencing outcome.

"This is a case that does not involve any physical violence, and it doesn't – there's not sort of a 'named victim,' so to speak – and so the court is going to take that into consideration," Anna Cominsky, who directs the Criminal Defense Clinic at New York Law School, told USA TODAY.

"In addition, I think it is unlikely that he would be sent to prison given who he is, given both the fact that he has no criminal record, and there is no getting around the fact that he is a former president of the United States," Cominsky said.

Incarceration a real possibility

Norman Eisen, a Brookings Institution senior fellow who served as special counsel to the House Judiciary Committee during Trump's first impeachment, thought a sentence that includes some incarceration is likely.

Eisen co-authored a report looking at sentencing for other defendants with no criminal history who were convicted of falsifying business records in New York. There, he noted one construction executive was sentenced in 2015 to spend two days each week in jail for a year for falsifying records to conceal payments in a bribery scheme. In 2013, two corporate executives were ordered to spend four to six months in jail for falsifying records to misclassify their salaries as expenses under their employer's larger bribery and fraud scheme.

"I think he's likely to face a sentence of incarceration if he's convicted," Eisen told USA TODAY.

Cominsky said the evidence Merchan hears at trial could also influence his thinking when it comes to sentencing.

"Often you'll hear judges refer to testimony at trial, evidence that was presented at trial, and say, 'This is why I'm imposing this sentence, because I heard from this particular witness or I saw this particular piece of evidence,'" Cominsky said.

Moscow pushed back against the assumption that Trump's sentences on each count would run simultaneously, instead of being stacked on top of each other. Just as a judge may take into account that a defendant has won a Nobel Peace Prize or lifted orphans from poverty, the judge may look at significant evidence of bad acts, Moscow said.

"When you start attacking the judge's daughter, and making her out to be a target, you have just breached the normal rules," Moscow said.

Trump has also posted a photo of himself wielding a bat, with his eyes directed toward an adjacent photo of Bragg, among other attacks on the district attorney. Bragg's office has received thousands of harassing emails, calls, and texts – including death threats – after Trump's social media attacks, it said in a court filing .

Diana Florence, a New York lawyer who spent decades in the Manhattan District Attorney's office, said Merchan's sentence would need to have some relation to what other white-collar defendants in similar cases have received, and she would be surprised if someone had ever gotten a sentencing range for falsifying business records with a minimum of 10 years or more.

Such a long sentence "would be very, very, very, very unusual, and if Judge Merchan wanted to make a point and do that, I highly doubt the appellate division would allow that to stand," she said. "It's just too much time for the conduct."

However, Florence added that a reasonable sentencing range could include a minimum period of more than a year incarcerated.

Sentencing someone with Secret Service protection?

Contemplating any jail or prison sentence would take Merchan into unchartered territory: Trump is the first former president ever criminally charged, and the Secret Service provides him with around-the-clock security.

But avoiding a sentence of incarceration on that basis risks undermining the idea of equal treatment under the law, Moscow suggested.

"If I were the judge − and I don't know what a judge would do in this case − I would reject out of hand the concept that because he was once president, and because as a matter of policy the Secret Service guards former presidents, that therefore he can't go to jail," Moscow said.

The question would then become how to reconcile equal treatment with ensuring a former president's security, according to Moscow. The judge could get creative, for example by ordering the former president to stay in a hotel wing or at a military base, where he is isolated just like any other prisoner but still has Secret Service protection.

"You can structure things to achieve the proper result without conceding that the defendant has the upper hand," Moscow said.

Chances of immediate prison? 'Less than 1%'

Many convicted defendants are "remanded" pending sentencing, a process in which they are taken into custody while they await their sentence, Florence said.

But Florence didn't expect Merchan to give that order when it comes to Trump, and even if Merchan did, Trump would likely be able to get bail set by an appeals court in the thousands of dollars to stay free during his appeal. That's all the more likely if Trump receives a low sentence, since the appeal could take longer than his actual sentence, she said.

"The chances of him going to prison immediately, even if he's convicted in whatever, six weeks from now or whenever, are I would say less than 1% because he would immediately be released on bail pending appeal," according to Florence.

Eisen agreed Trump probably wouldn't be incarcerated by Election Day, even if he's convicted on all counts.

"I think he's extremely unlikely to be forced to serve that sentence pending appeal," Eisen said.

Dominic Dale ‘astonished’ by World Snooker Championship return after 10-year absence

2024 Betvictor Welsh Open - Day 5

Dominic Dale will make his Crucible comeback this month after a 10-year absence after coming through World Championship qualifying in Sheffield.

The 52-year-old became the oldest qualifier since Steve Davis in 2010 by beating He Guoqiang 10-8 at the English Institute of Sport.

It has been a good season for the Spaceman, with two ranking quarter-finals to his name, and to finish it off on the sport’s grandest stage is the stuff of dreams for him.

‘I am astonished actually,’ he said. ‘I was 9-6 up and had a couple of golden chances but I wasn’t nervous. It’s been so long since I played in a match of that magnitude, not necessarily financially but to get back to The Crucible.

‘I couldn’t have dreamt at my age that I could play well enough to get there. You’ve got to play so many matches to qualify now and I sometimes wonder if I’m capable enough, but luckily tonight I was.’

Davis made a quarter-final on his last Crucible appearance in 2010 and Dale reached the last eight on his last visit in 2014, losing out in a deciding frame to Barry Hawkins.

‘I’ll tale a quarter-final!’ Dale said. ‘I’ve been to two of them.’

Cazoo World Snooker Championship 2023 - Day Six

Former world champion Stuart Bingham also came through qualifying by beating Louis Heathcote 10-8 and giving himself the opportunity to finish a poor season off in style.

The 2015 world champ is ranked number 29 in the world after a lean spell for results and he hinted at off-table issues causing a distraction.

‘I’ve tried to clear my head away from the table but I’ve got a few things still on,’ he said. ‘I don’t feel like I’ve played that bad all season but I’ve come up against players that have played really well.

‘I remember losing 5-3 to Ishpreet [Singh Chadha] in World Open qualifying then 4-1 to Marco [Fu], my mind weren’t there, few things off the table.

Cazoo World Snooker Championship 2023 - Day Five

‘I had near enough eight weeks off, had Championship League Winners Group, doubled in the old Chinese Hey Ball over in China, came back, got me head down, got some good practice in, played Mark Davis, Barry Hawkins and Kyren [Wilson]. I’ve come here, felt really good and got my rewards.’

There will be some seriously tricky ties for the seeds in Thursday’s draw, with the likes of Jack Lisowski and Stephen Maguire also securing Crucible trips on Tuesday night, beating Matthew Stevens and Yuan Sijun respectively.

Also qualifying were Lyu Haotian, Robbie Williams, Jak Jones and Ricky Walden, with the final eight qualifiers confirmed on Wednesday night.
