New Edition is an all-male R&B group that formed in Boston in the early 1980s. The group spearheaded the boy band movement that endured throughout the '80s and '90s, and they're widely recognized as pioneers of the New Jack Swing R&B/hip-hop subgenre.

The group is made up of members Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, Bobby Brown, Ronnie DeVoe, Johnny Gill, and Ralph Tresvant. Gill is not an original member.

The boys who would become known as New Edition grew up in Boston.  Bobby Brown , Michael Bivins, and Ricky Bell, who knew each other from school and living in the same housing projects, formed a vocal group in the late 1970s. Two friends, Travis Pettus and Corey Rackley, were briefly members. They met local manager and choreographer Brooke Payne while performing at a talent show in Roxbury, Mass. The group auditioned for Payne, who thought the quintet was like a new edition of the Jackson 5 , and he renamed them New Edition.

Pettus and Rackley left the group and were replaced by another neighborhood friend, Ralph Tresvant, and Payne's nephew Ronnie DeVoe.

New Edition caught their break in 1982 when they were discovered at a talent show at Boston's Strand Theatre by music producer and songwriter Maurice Starr. The group ended up taking second place, but Starr was impressed and offered them a deal on his label Streetwise Records. The next day they started working on what would become their debut album, Candy Girl .

Early Career

Their 1983 debut was both a critical and commercial success. Candy Girl  sold over a million copies and the title track was No. 1 hit the U.S. and U.K. They subsequently embarked on a major tour to promote the album.

After the tour wrapped and the boys returned home they each received a check for the measly amount of $1.87. Starr explained that tour expenses prevented them from being paid more. In 1984 they split with Starr and sued his label. New Edition won the lawsuit and they scored a recording deal with MCA Records following a bidding war with several other major labels.

Their self-titled second album, which was released in 1984, was even more successful than their first. It eventually sold over 2 million copies and generated multiple singles, including "Cool It Now" and the Top 5 hit "Mr. Telephone Man."

Their third effort,  All for Love , was released in 1985. Though not nearly as successful as  New Edition , it still went platinum and yielded the hit singles "Count Me Out," "A Little Bit of Love (Is All It Takes)" and "With You All the Way."

Membership Shuffle

New Edition voted member Bobby Brown out in 1986, reportedly due to personality differences, and the group continued as a quartet. Brown embarked on a solo career.

Despite the shakeup, they continued to be successful. After recording a cover of the 1954 Penguins ' hit "Earth Angel" for the soundtrack to "The Karate Kid, Part II," they were inspired to record  Under the Blue Moon , a compilation of doo-wop covers.

In 1987 Johnny Gill was brought into the group.

Their fifth album,  Heart Break , was released in 1988. It marked New Edition's departure from kiddie-pop and their entry into a smoother, stronger, more mature sound that resonated with critics and fans. It went on to sell more than 2 million copies in the U.S. Soon after they kicked off a tour with former member Bobby Brown, who now had a successful career as a solo artist, as their opening act.

With Bobby Brown experiencing substantial solo success, the boys of New Edition felt inspired to pursue side projects and they temporarily broke up.

Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, and Ronnie DeVoe formed the trio Bell Biv DeVoe. Their 1990 debut album,  Poison , which served as a fixture of the New Jack Swing movement, sold more than 4 million copies.

Ralph Tresvant and Johnny Gill each released solo albums and enjoyed platinum success.

The group reunited at the 1990 MTV Video Music Awards when all six members, including Bobby Brown, performed a remix of the Bell Biv DeVoe song "Word to the Mutha!"

1996 Reunion

New Edition had promised fans they'd get back together, so in 1996 they released  Home Again . Bobby Brown was officially back in the group, making New Edition a sextet for the first time, and the album sold more than 4 million copies worldwide.

The reunion was short-lived, however. During their promotional tour, the group broke out into a fight onstage when Brown decided to lengthen his solo set. Brown and Bivins left the tour, and Bell, DeVoe, Gill, and Tresvant finished it as a quartet.

After the tour was over, New Edition's future was more uncertain than ever before.

Solo pursuits followed New Edition's second breakup and they eventually reunited sans Bobby Brown in 2002. Sean "Diddy" Combs, CEO of Bad Boy Records, signed the group to his label.

One Love  was issued in 2004. It debuted at No. 12 on the Billboard 200 but continued to decline. New Edition eventually asked to be released from their contract with Bad Boy due to creative differences.

In 2005 New Edition performed at BET's 25th Anniversary Special. Bobby Brown joined the group for a performance of "Mr. Telephone Man," and it was later announced that he'd reconciled with the group and planned to rejoin them in future concerts.

New Edition announced a world tour to celebrate their 30th anniversary in 2012. That same year they received the Soul Train Award for Lifetime Achievement.

In 2015 BET announced a three-night scripted miniseries about the group that would air sometime in 2016. Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, Ronnie DeVoe, Johnny Gill, Ralph Tresvant, and their original choreographer and longtime manager, Brooke Payne, signed on as co-producers.

New Edition at 2021 American Music Awards

New Edition is returning to centerstage, as the group finally announced their long-awaited tour—their first in nearly a decade since the #AllSix tour that ended in 2012.

The 30-city tour will feature all six members—Ronnie DeVoe, Bobby Brown, Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, Ralph Tresvant, and Johnny Gill— and is set to run from Feb. 2022 through early April.

When speaking on this tour and the concept of “reuniting,” Johnny Gill exclusively told VIBE ahead of the group’s American Music Awards performance in November, “It’s so funny, people always say reunion. It’s not. Honestly, New Edition has been New Edition and it’s been all of us here […] We decided to come together now and join back forces and give our fans something that they’re looking forward to seeing.”

The Roxbury crooners will be joined by Charlie Wilson and the newly-reunited Jodeci .

Michael Paran, founder/CEO of P Music Group revealed that the Jodeci reunion was sparked during the pandemic. Paran shared with  Billboard , “They’re ready to build something new, done the right way without continuing the missteps of the past. I want to be long-term with them and help them show the world that they’re back to begin a whole new era.” Paran also reps Charlie Wilson and Johnny Gill.

Presale tickets for The Culture Tour will be available starting on Tuesday (Dec. 14) at 10 a.m. local time for select cities until Thursday (Dec. 16) at 10 p.m. local time. Tickets go on sale for the general public on Friday (Dec. 17) at 10 a.m. local time.

New Edition Announces The Culture Tour beginning February 2022 with Charlie Wilson and Special Guest Jodeci, Featuring a Stop in Atlanta at State Farm Arena on Sunday, February 20, 2022

NEW YORK (Dec. 13, 2021) - Veteran R&B group New Edition headlines an iconic lineup with the legendary Charlie Wilson, along with special guest, Jodeci, the bad boys of R&B. The Culture Tour kicks off a 30-city tour February 2022 , in Columbus, Ga., and features a stop in Atlanta at the award-winning State Farm Arena on Sunday, February 20, 2022 , with stops in Los Angeles, New York, and New Edition’s hometown of Boston.

In 1983, New Edition released their debut single Candy Girl off their self-titled album, hitting No.1 on the Billboard Hot Black Single Charts, jumping ahead of Michael Jackson’s Beat It. Since then, New Edition has released more than six studio albums, received multiple Soul Train and American Music Awards, and a Grammy Award nomination. In 2017, BET Network released their three-part Biopic: The New Edition Story , airing over three consecutive nights. The mini-series attracted 29 million total viewers. That same year, the network honored them with the BET Lifetime Achievement Award, recognizing the group as one of the innovators of R&B. They have remained one of the most influential R&B groups of the last 30 years and counting, catapulting the solo careers of Bobby Brown, Johnny Gill, and Ralph Tresvant, and Bell Biv DeVoe.

Viewers experienced a sense of nostalgia during the American Music Awards in November 2021, when New Edition performed alongside 80’s boy band, New Kids on the Block. Often credited as the creators of the modern-day boy bands, New Edition will attract fans old and new. Starring all six members, Ronnie DeVoe, Bobby Brown, Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, Ralph Tresvant, and Johnny Gill, this is the group’s first tour since 2014.

With a career spanning over four decades, Charlie Wilson also known as “Uncle Charlie,” is one of the few names in music that resonate with multiple generations of music lovers. Beginning as the co-founder/lead singer for The Gap Band (“Outstanding, “Burn Rubber On Me,” “Yearning For Your Love,”) Wilson later embarked on a successful solo career garnering himself thirteen Grammy awards nominations, eleven NAACP Image Awards (including two wins), the BMI Icon Award in 2005, and the 2009 Soul Train Icon Award. His #1 solo hits include “Charlie, Last Name Wilson,” “There Goes My Baby,” and “You Are” to name a few. In 2020 and 2009, he was named  Billboard  magazine's No. 1 Adult R&B Male Artist and remains the Top Adult Male Artist with the most #1s in three decades. He was honored by BET with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013 with an all-star tribute by Justin Timberlake, Pharrell Williams, and Snoop Dogg. Representing the sound that shaped 90s R&B, the iconic group Jodeci joins the tour as a special guest. The group debuted their first album, Forever My Lady , in 1991 and have sold more than 20 million records worldwide. They have been the soundtrack to many music lover’s most memorable moments for over 30 years with hit songs "Forever My Lady,” "Stay,” and "Come and Talk To Me" . After a several year hiatus the group has reunited and are ready to show fans why they reign supreme as one of the most iconic R&B groups of all time.

In partnership with The Black Promoters Collective, a 100 percent Black-owned promotions company composed of veteran live entertainment promoters, The Culture Tour tickets go on sale to the general public Friday, Dec. 17, 10am local time at Ticketmaster.com . American Express® Card Members can purchase tickets in select markets before the general public beginning Tuesday, December 14 at 10am local time through Thursday, December 16 at 10pm local time.

New Edition are a band hailing from Boston, Massachusetts, United States who formed in 1978. Since their debut, they have released seven studio albums and are generally considered to be one of the world's first true boy-bands.

The group was formed by a group of five friends who all lived in the Orchard Park housing projects in Boston, Massachusetts. Bobby Brown, Michael Bivins, Ricky Bell, Travis Pettus and Corey Rackley all came together in 1978 and soon after their formation they were performing at local talent shows and anywhere else that would have them. Soon after their first live show they met Brooke Payne, a choreographer who was branching out into management. He saw something in the band so he had them audition for him a couple of days after first meeting them, and was so impressed with what he saw that he became their manager. He also named them New Edition as he saw them as an updated version of The Jackson 5, but it still wasn't enough for Rackley or Pettus.

They left the group shortly after it was named, but were shortly replaced by Ralph Tresvant and Ronnie DeVoe, respectively. Over the next couple of years, the band continued to perform live and make demos until their big break in 1982, where they were seen live by the singer/producer Maurice Starr. Starr was so impressed with the band that he took them into his personal recording studio and cut their debut album “Candy Girl” right there and then. The album was released in 1983, and it's title track was a big hit, topping the Billboard R&B Chart and the U.K singles chart (the first ever number one single in the U.K to contain rapping as well!).

While the band did get a big break thanks to Starr, it also turned out that Starr was meddling with their finances. Meaning that after a hugely successful nation-wide tour, the band each received a pay-check worth the princely sum of $1.87 for their efforts. The band parted ways with Starr and signed a record deal with MCA Records, leading to their commercial peak with their self-titled second album and its singles “Cool It Now” and “Mr. Telephone Man”. Ever since then, the band have remained a huge influence on modern R&B, as their hip-hop inflected chart pop paved the way for New Jack Swing acts like Boyz 2 Men. They're a band whose influence can be felt on the pop charts to this very day, and they remain an unmissable live act to boot. For that, they come highly recommended.

Live reviews

NEW EDITION (Ronnie, Bobby, Ricky, Mike, Ralph and Johnny) performed like they were in their 20's (AMAZING!). I was dancing the whole time and did not sit down once. It was the best concert I have been too in a very long time. I was singing along to every song (singles from Bobby, Ralph, Johnny, BBD and New Edition). You have to go see them -- I would go again... it's worth every penny! I love them because..."EVERY LITTLE STEP" I took made me realized that, I am "STILL IN LOVE" with them because they are "DOPE!" and they know how to "RUB YOU THE RIGHT WAY"; they are not "STONE COLD GENTLEMAN"! AWESOME CONCERT!

Man this show was great! Them boys from Boston and one from D.C. had us older folks groovin' and the balcony rocking....literally! It was like a NE mixtape. They came out together, then split off into singles and group, the back together again. It was a journey thru time as they started with 5, went to 4, then back to 5, and finally to all 6!!! #NE4Life #all6

The new edition concert was excellent . It had been 25 years since I saw them first, this show was stunning . Their presentation was for the fans. The men are in great shape with exception of BB, but he kept up. I will see them again when they are in the city. The venue was great, the DJ during intermission was kicking. Love, love.

It was 1997, and New Edition, the most gifted vocal group since the Jackson 5, was imploding.

For Ralph Tresvant, Ronnie DeVoe, Bobby Brown, Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins and Johnny Gill, the “Home Again” reunion tour was supposed to be a victory lap. Since making their 1983 debut with their wide-eyed bubblegum jam “ Candy Girl ,” the young singers from Boston’s tough Orchard Park projects had beaten the odds to sell over 20 million records worldwide, highlighted by their self-titled breakthrough (1984), the dramatic “All for Love” (1985) and the landmark Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis-produced “Heart Break” (1988). (Gill, from Washington, D.C., joined the group in 1987.)

After scoring their first No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart with 1996’s “Home Again” and a string of solo successes, New Edition was ready for its coronation as R&B icons. Instead, the 1997 shows were a full-blown disaster.

Brown, who’d married pop superstar Whitney Houston in 1992 and whose issues with drugs and alcohol and run-ins with the law made him the subject of tabloid headlines and the butt of late-night jokes, had suffered a heart attack just two weeks before the tour kicked off. During the course of the tour, each New Edition member traveled on a separate bus. At one show in Las Cruces, New Mexico, Brown, DeVoe and their entourages got into a fight, onstage. Security teams for the two camps pulled guns on each other.

Toward the end of the tour, Tresvant had had enough. “F— it,” he told his childhood friends. “I ain’t doing no more shows.” The concerts left New Edition in debt. Gill summed up the entire experience to one interviewer: “It’s been hell, absolute hell.”

Nearly 25 years later, New Edition are in a Chicago rehearsal space, and this time around the mood is considerably lighter. The men, now in their 50s, are in high spirits, and a genuine sense of brotherhood abounds. There’s good reason: New Edition’s 30-city “Culture” tour — featuring the Gap Band’s Charlie Wilson and ’90s R&B stars Jodeci, and coming to Los Angeles’ Crypto.com Arena on Sunday — has been filling large venues with fans spanning generations and races.

The last time all six members performed together on an extended bill was in 2014. “We didn’t know if New Edition performing together was ever going to happen again,” says Tresvant, the group’s smooth-singing lead vocalist. “I believe that motivated people to come out and make sure they got the chance to see all six members out there.”

“The fans who grew up with us are really happy to come out and celebrate,” says Bell, who is also a member of New Edition’s ’90s hip-hop-fueled spinoff trio Bell Biv DeVoe.

Five young teenagers stand in front of a chain-link fence in the 1980s.

Brown, who was kicked out of New Edition in 1985 over his constant showboating and missed performances before emerging as a solo star with his 7-million-selling “Don’t Be Cruel,” is hopeful that the group’s days of infighting are behind them.

“With the ‘Home Again’ tour everybody thought they were the star,” says Brown from his Los Angeles home. “We definitely dealt with each other totally differently back then. We were a lot younger and there wasn’t a lot of [unity]. We left our egos at the door this time.”

Brown seems particularly happy to be reunited with his friends in New Edition. You could say Brown, who’s been drug free for nearly 20 years and sober from alcohol for over a year, is just happy to be alive. Between 2012 and 2020, the singer lost his ex-wife Houston , the couple’s 22-year-old daughter, Bobbi Kristina Brown , and his 28-year-old son, Bobby Brown Jr., all to drug-related deaths.

“This tour has been therapeutic for me,” says Brown. “We pray a lot. We talk a lot.”

Says Bell, who overcame his own battles with drug addiction, “To see Bobby out there doing his joints ... it’s been beautiful, man.”

The group — all are now married, some even with adult children — credit longtime manager, choreographer and “7th member” Brooke Payne with getting them back into fighting shape for the tour. “Oh, man, Brooke is still kicking us in the ass everyday,” laughs Brown. “Muscle memory is one thing, but being 53 years old and still trying to dance like you’re 20 is really difficult.

“We know that ticket prices are high,” he adds, “which is why it’s been so surprising to us that people are actually taking the time to pay homage to New Edition.”

Joe Hadley, the band’s booking agent at CAA, who helped sign New Edition last year to a worldwide representation deal encompassing touring, film, television, composing and literature, notes the success of the tour has caught the attention of concert promoters who traditionally lean heavily on classic rock acts as arena attractions.

“[Promoters] are starting to understand that there are [middle-age] Black music fans with disposable income,” says Hadley. “You have Black artists who are global superstars, but maybe haven’t toured in a while. There are going to be artists from different eras, like a Missy Elliott, that we will see tour again in the near future. It’s a really exciting space.”

Yet despite all the good will, New Edition has a few scores to settle. “There were times we were taken advantage of,” DeVoe says, about the group’s battles with the music industry. “Now we are making sure our budgets are right. We are paying attention to every penny that’s coming in, damn near to the concession stands. Even if we don’t have a piece of it, we are trying to understand it, because of the things that we’ve been through in our careers.”

new edition first tour

Tresvant, Brown, Bell, DeVoe and Bivins were first discovered as kids by local songwriter and producer Maurice Starr, at a 1982 Boston-area talent show. Back then, New Edition dreamed only of following in the footsteps of their musical heroes. “We were coming after the Temptations and the Jackson 5,” recalls Tresvant. “These were the people we looked up to. In our era, the hip-hop era, New Edition was the first on the block.”

After the group returned from their first national tour, they were dropped back off at the projects with each member pocketing $1.87 apiece. Starr and New Edition’s label Streetwise Records claimed touring expenses were to blame. The boys promptly hired a lawyer and got released from their contract.

New Edition’s 1984 self-titled album for MCA Records was an even bigger success, going double platinum. They had a top five pop single, “Cool It Now.” New Edition was now a legit arena draw, selling out venues such as Madison Square Garden.

But once again, the money wasn’t adding up. New Edition soon discovered that they were not signed to MCA, but rather to their management’s production company Jump & Shoot. Each member had to borrow $100,000 from MCA to extricate themselves from yet another duplicitous deal.

“As far as New Edition is concerned, that’s never going to happen again,” insists DeVoe.

When it came time to find a team to organize the new tour, the group went with the African American-owned company the Black Promoters Collective — which has overseen productions for H.E.R., Cardi B and Stevie Wonder — over larger conglomerates such as Live Nation and AEG Presents.

“We are uniquely positioned to work with BIPOC artists,” BPC’s co-partner Shelby Joyner said, “because we are from similar spaces and places as the talent we seek as partners.”

“For Black folks, New Edition has been at the forefront of our lives for a very long time,” says Cori Murray, deputy editor at Essence magazine. The group is scheduled to be one of the headliners at this summer’s Essence Fest at New Orleans’ Caesars Superdome.

Six men in matching suits and hats

New Edition admit they haven’t always received the respect they felt due. During their success in the ’80s, a culture-shifting moment when hip-hop was just beginning to take hold of Middle America and Michael Jackson, Prince and Madonna were jockeying for pop supremacy on MTV, the teen act was often treated as an afterthought by white mainstream entertainment outlets.

“In 1983, there was no one else like us on TV or on the radio that our community could really relate to,” says Bell. “We weren’t really thinking about crossing over.”

Following Brown’s departure in late ’85, the addition of powerhouse vocalist Johnny Gill gave the group a more mature, dynamic range. New Edition’s evolution from teen-zine favorites to respected artists can be heard on “Heart Break,” now regarded as part of the new jack swing canon.

Meanwhile, New Edition became the prototype for such mammoth (white) boy bands as New Kids on the Block (also discovered and marketed by Starr), the Backstreet Boys and ‘N Sync, as well as multiplatinum R&B vocal groups such as Boyz II Men (who got their name from a New Edition song before being signed by budding music mogul Bivins), Dru Hill and Jagged Edge.

“But none of them can compete with New Edition,” Bell says in a rare moment of chest-beating. “We have the best of R&B, the best of hip-hop, the best of pop … all of that combined in one group.”

new edition first tour

Watching New Edition perform its catalog of favorites (“ Jealous Girl ,” “Cool It Now,” “ Mr. Telephone Man ,” “Can You Stand the Rain,” “If It Isn’t Love,” “ Hit Me Off ”) and solo material by Brown (“My Prerogative”), Tresvant (“ Sensitivity ”), Bell Biv Devoe (“ Poison ”) and Gill (“ My, My, My ”) can be revelatory, a living reminder of the connection between Black ’50s doo-wop (New Edition used to cover the Penguins’ classic “Earth Angel”) and today’s airtight K-pop a la BTS.

New Edition remains the only vocal group in music history in which every member has scored a platinum or multiplatinum album. So why has it taken this long for them to capitalize on their legacy? While race has certainly played a factor, DeVoe says a big part of the blame was due to the group’s penchant for getting in their own way.

“At times we’ve played theaters [for] 4,000 fans and we had to have a support act just for that,” he admits of the act’s down period. “Some of the [issues] that we went through minimized the magnitude of what New Edition could do.”

In 2017, the group co-produced the BET scripted miniseries “The New Edition Story,” a three-part dramatization of their soap-operatic run that drew huge ratings and warm reviews. (One writer called it “the best black TV biopic” since the 1992 ABC series “The Jacksons: An American Dream.”)

Yet in 2018, the group had to scrap a much-anticipated tour over a business dispute that boiled over into public view. Tresvant and Gill reportedly trademarked the group’s name without the others’ consent. In an Instagram post, Brown cropped Tresvant out of an early ’80s throwback photo of New Edition. Tresvant responded to his ex bandmates in a 50th birthday shoutout to fans: “This year is the start of Me, Myself, and Mines… NOTHING ELSE MATTERS!!!”

Subsequently, Devoe, Brown, Bell and Biv formed RBRM (Ronnie Bobby Ricky Mike) and launched their own tour. Tresvant and Gill hit the road as a duo. “We built the name and Johnny walked into the name,” Bivins snapped on the Breakfast Club radio show.

As with most New Edition fights, the group chalks it up to miscommunication and the matter has since been resolved. “We never really talked about it,” says Tresvant. “That was the problem.”

new edition first tour

Sometimes New Edition just needs to be reminded of their far-reaching impact. “You don’t ever really feel like you’ve made it until you look at the eyes of the guys that came up under you,” says Tresvant. “For the first time in New Edition’s career, we are finally feeling like we are in that spot.”

In addition to the current tour, New Edition is recording tracks for what they hope will be an upcoming reunion album, and there are plans for a Las Vegas residency later this year.

Meanwhile, in May, A&E will air a two-part documentary, “Biography: Bobby Brown,” that will serve as a lead-in to a 12-episode reality series, “Bobby Brown: Every Little Step.”

And if DeVoe has his way, New Edition will be in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2023, just in time for the group’s 40th anniversary. “We are definitely going to hit that home run at some point,” he says. “I’m speaking that one into existence.”

New Edition to launch 2023 tour with Keith Sweat, Guy and Tank as guests

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

“The Legacy Tour” coincides with the 40th anniversary year of New Edition’s debut, “Candy Girl.”

New Edition will embark on a new tour in 2023 and will bring along some important guests. The R&B group announced that its “Legacy Tour” will have support from Keith Sweat , Guy and Tank.

The supergroup sextet of Ronnie DeVoe, Bobby Brown , Ricky Bell, Mike Bivins, Ralph Tresvant and Johnny Gill is scheduled to perform in 30 venues in only a two-month span next spring. From March 9 to April 30, the group will play Charlotte, North Carolina, Washington D.C., Newark, New Jersey, Chicago, Cincinnati, Atlanta, Las Vegas and other cities.

Sweat, a longtime collaborator of Riley and Gill, is behind R&B classics, including “Make It Last Forever,” “Make You Sweat,” “Twisted” and “Nobody.” Guy — the reunited New Jack Swing pioneers Teddy Riley, Aaron Hall and Damion Hall — are known for hits like “Groove Me,” “I Like,” “Let’s Chill” and “Piece of My Love.”

Tank expressed his excitement about touring with his R&B heroes in a video he tweeted on Wednesday. “After 22 years of hard work and dedication, it is an honor to open for those who paved the way.”

The “Please Don’t Go” singer starred in both “The New Edition Story” and “The Bobby Brown Story” BET miniseries, playing former MCA Records executive Jheryl Busby.

The Legacy Tour kicks off as New Edition celebrates the 40th anniversary of its debut album, 1983’s “Candy Girl.” That album launched the then-quintet into music stardom with hits like the title track, “Popcorn Love” and “Is This the End.”

The group announced its return to the road less than a year after wrapping the “Culture Tour ” earlier this year. It featured Charlie Wilson and special guest, Jodeci.

Tour tickets can be purchased via Ticketmaster . Pre-sales begin at 10 a.m. local time on Dec. 15, while general public tickets go on sell at 10 a.m. local time on Dec. 16.

New Edition's Las Vegas residency is still going strong through 2024, though only a few tour dates remain. Luckily, the iconic music group has added additional tour dates and there are a few different ways to buy New Edition tickets.

New Edition began their residency at the Encore Theater in Las Vegas in February, with their stay ultimately being extended through November. After their original six shows, New Edition added two more legs for this year for a total of 10 more concert dates. Performing on their 2024 concert tour are group members Bobby Brown, Ralph Tresvant, Johnny Gill, Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, and Ronnie DeVoe, who sing their classic hits like "Candy Girl," "Cool It Now," and "If It Isn't Love."

If you're still looking for how to buy tickets to New Edition's concerts, we've got you covered. Here's our breakdown of the R&B group's tour schedule, purchasing details, and ticket prices. You can also browse tickets and show specifics on StubHub and Vivid Seats at your leisure.

New Edition 2024 tour schedule

All six members of New Edition are returning for the remainder of the group's Las Vegas residency, which kicks off on July 3. It features seven shows from July 3 to July 13 in Las Vegas, with the third leg picking back up for three additional concert dates in October and November.

The group is also appearing at the Cincinnati Music Festival in July.

All concert times are listed in local time zones.

How to buy tickets for New Edition's 2024 concert tour

You can buy original tickets for New Edition's 2024 Las Vegas residency concert dates and music festival appearance on Ticketmaster. However, since the residency extension shows went on sale in March 2024, the quantity of remaining original tickets is limited.

Tickets can also be purchased from verified resale vendors like StubHub and Vivid Seats . You may have better luck with the variety of seating options and availability on resale sites compared to the original tickets still left.

It's also important to note that New Edition's shows at the Encore Theater in Las Vegas only permit concertgoers ages 18 and up — so be sure to bring your ID to get into the group's residency performances.

How much are New Edition's tickets?

Given the high demand for the group's remaining Las Vegas residency shows, tickets to see New Edition in 2024 are relatively expensive. Furthermore, ticket prices vary depending on each show's concert date and demand. Resale ticket prices are comparable to or cheaper than original ticket costs.

The cheapest original ticket prices on Ticketmaster begin at $175 for New Edition's Las Vegas shows on October 30 and November 1. The least expensive seats are generally in the left or right mezzanine. However, most other dates with remaining original tickets are a bit more costly, with the cheapest seats coming in at over $200.

On the other hand, original one-day Saturday tickets for New Edition's Cincinnati Music Festival performance start at only $65. This ticket also lets you see artists like Kem, Stokley, En Vogue, and Coco Jones. Check out the full line-up here .

The least expensive resale tickets available to New Edition's Las Vegas residency on StubHub start at $165 for the group's July 5 performance. Vivid Seats offers similar prices for resale tickets, as the cheapest available Las Vegas show passes begin at $165. However, both sites' base fares are slightly more expensive than the $65 original tickets for the Cincinnati Music Festival, as StubHub's begin at $72 while Vivid Seats' start at $73.

New Edition performs together onstage.

New Edition is getting back into the New Jack Swing of things.

Following a massive 2022 tour, the famed R&B group decided to do it all over again next year and will take their “Legacy Tour” to arenas all over North America from March 9 through April 30.

And no, you don’t have to worry the whole group— Ronnie, Bobby, Ricky, Mike, Ralph and Johnny— will be there.

To sweeten the deal, they’re bringing along fellow icons Keith Sweat, the recently reunited Guy and Tank along for the ride as well.

On the 30-concert trek, New Edition and their impressive roster of opening acts will drop into the NY/NJ area three times— first up, they’ll hit Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall on March 18, then Newark’s Prudential Center on March 19 and finally, Elmont’s UBS Arena on April 20.

So, if you count yourself among the many #NE4Lifers and can’t wait to hear “Candy Girl,” live, here’s everything you need to know about the 2023 “Legacy Tour.”

New Edition 2023 tour schedule

A complete calendar featuring all upcoming tour dates, venues and links to buy tickets can be found below.

New Edition opening acts

The lineup for the “Legacy Tour” is truly stacked. In the off chance you’re not acquainted with the tour’s special guests, we’ve got a quick refresher ready to go for you.

Keith Sweat has five Top 10 Billboard hits and 14 huge albums under his belt, making him a bona fide headliner in his own right. In fact, he’s got a few arena gigs of his own lined up for next year. If you’re looking to fall in love with his music all over again, give “Twisted,” one of the all-time great slow jams, a spin.

Guy , currently made up of Teddy Riley, Aaron Hall and Damion Hall, broke up in 1991 and has reunited multiple times since the initial split. Most recently, the New Jack Swing pioneers played a handful of gigs in 2018-19 where they busted out their classic hits “Let’s Chill” and “Groove Me.”

Tank is a bit newer to the scene, getting his start in 2001. Over the past two decades, he’s steadily released music— including smash singles “Maybe I Deserve,” “Please Don’t Go” and “When We”— and developed a nice acting career as well. You very may well recognize him from his work in “The Real Husbands of Hollywood,” “Grown Folks” and, of course, “The New Edition Story.”

Huge R&B tours in 2023

Our musical forecast for next year: Expect lots of slow dances and party-starting anthems.

That’s because many of the biggest names in R&B have lined up tours in the coming months.

Rather than overwhelm you, here are just five of our favorite can’t miss acts you have to catch when they come to a city near you this winter, spring and summer.

New Edition coming to Memphis with Keith Sweat and Guy: What to know about the show

new edition first tour

In March 2022, New Edition brought The Culture Tour to FedExForum , playing for a near-capacity crowd at the Downtown Memphis venue.

The show, which also featured performances by Charlie Wilson and Jodeci, felt like a homecoming for New Edition, who have been performing in the Mid-South since exploding onto the music scene in the 1980s.

Four decades on, the group still managed to dazzle the local faithful during a 2-hour concert spectacular.

Given the response to their show and tour last year — which proved a rousing success among fans hungry for unapologetically nostalgic post-pandemic entertainment — it’s little surprise that the group is headed back to Memphis this week.

This time, New Edition is headlining The Legacy Tour, which will also feature a reunion with fellow New Jack icons Keith Sweat and Guy, as well as a special guest appearance by R&B singer Tank.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

This upcoming FedExForum show , like the previous concert, is being presented by the Black Promoters Collective and is part of a 30-date arena tour that will cross the country in March and April.

Memphis concerts: From New Edition to Patti LaBelle, 11 Memphis concerts you shouldn't miss in March

Memphis in May: Beale Street Music Festival is missing buzzworthy headliners. Are they still to come?

In the statement announcing the tour, Black Promoters Collective CEO Gary Guidry said: “When we partnered with NE for 'The Culture Tour,' although I knew it would be stellar, their show exceeded my expectations; the guys were nothing short of miraculous. We are excited about partnering with New Edition to further the legacy of the foundation they have already laid.”

Here are three things to know ahead of Sunday's show in Memphis.

The Legacy Tour lineup

Formed in Roxbury, Massachusetts, in 1978, New Edition — Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, Bobby Brown, Ronnie DeVoe and Ralph Tresvant — began as a boy band modeled after the Jackson 5.

The group broke out nationally in 1982 with the release of the infectious single “Candy Girl,” launching a seven-year run of hits from “Mr. Telephone Man” to "Can You Stand the Rain." Brown left the band in 1985 for a solo career, with vocalist Johnny Gill eventually joining up as his replacement.

After the group split in 1989, the various members would find considerable success as solo acts and as part of Bell Biv DeVoe. Starting in the mid-'90s, New Edition would reunite in various permutations. Last year’s show was the first time in more than a decade that the full six-man lineup — featuring Bobby Brown, Ralph Tresvant, Michael Bivins, Ricky Bell, Ronnie DeVoe and Johnny Gill  — had performed in Memphis.

What makes this current New Edition-led tour so interesting is the synergy of the lineup, particular the inclusion of fellow New Jack Swing acts Keith Sweat and the original lineup of Guy, led by Teddy Riley.

Sweat first made his mark in 1987 with the release of his debut “Make It Last Forever,” and the hit "I Want Her." A decade later, in 1997, Sweat formed the groupLSG (Levert, Sweat, and Gill with Johnny Gill of New Edition), whose debut album went double platinum. In addition to his solo career, Sweat currently hosts the popular nationally syndicated R&B evening radio show "The Sweat Hotel with Keith Sweat."

If New Jack Swing has an architect, then it’s writer/producer and Guy leader Teddy Riley. Guy — featuring Aaron Hall and Damion Hall — launched in 1987, with their self-titled classic LP, and hit singles "I Like," "Groove Me" and "Teddy's Jam." The group split up after their sophomore album, and Teddy Riley went on to produce hits for Bobby Brown, Michael Jackson and Lady Gaga, among others.

What to expect at New Edition show

New Edition’s Legacy Tour will kick off officially Thursday, with a concert in South Carolina. After stops in Charlotte and Birmingham, the tour will arrive in Memphis on Sunday.

Because Memphis comes fairly early in the run, there won’t be much advance buzz on what the show will be like, but based on last year’s tour, concertgoers can expect all three main acts to focus on their hits and fan favorites. None of the acts have new albums to promote or are looking to dig too deep into their catalog, but rather serving up much-loved classics.

Last year, New Edition’s set packed the best from the group’s catalog — all the way back to 1982’s "Candy Girl" through to 1988's smash "If It Isn’t Love" and even 1995’s comeback single “Hit Me Off" — while incorporating songs from their various solo and post-New Edition projects.

This includes bangers from Brown (“My Prerogative,” “Every Little Step”), Gill (“Rub You The Right Way”), and Tresvant (“Sensitivity”), as well as Bell Biv DeVoe (“Poison,” “Do Me!”). The group has even been doing some throwback covers, including The Floaters “Float On” and David Oliver’s “Love TKO.”

Sweat and Guy are expected to deliver similarly sharp sets of favorites. In short, expect plenty of familiar jams.

Are New Edition tickets still available?

Given New Edition’s quick return to the Mid-South market, it’s clear the group remains a popular attraction and early ticket sales for the FedExForum show back that up.

A quick look at Ticketmaster reveals that there are just a relative handful of prime front section seats — designated as Diamond and Gold premium tickets — remaining. Those range from $379.50 to $529.50.

Mostly, though, the seats available are in the mid-level Sapphire Premium area, costing $179.50. Upper level seating costs $79.50.

Based on the way the show has been selling to date, it’s very likely the event will be sold out by Sunday.

New Edition: The Legacy Tour with Keith Sweat, Guy and Tank

7 p.m. Sunday at FedExForum, 191 Beale St.

Tickets: $79.50 to $529.50. Available at Ticketmaster.com

Mark Cavendish knighted after postponing retirement to beat Tour de France record

Mark Cavendish will head to the Tour de France later this month seeking to become not only the first rider to win 35 stages of cycling’s most famous race, but the first to win one as a Knight Bachelor. The Manxman said he was “truly humbled and thankful” after being knighted in the King’s Birthday Honours on Friday night.

Cavendish , 39, is widely regarded as the greatest sprinter in the history of cycling, having won 164 races and counting during an extraordinary career on track and road in what has been a golden era for the sport in Britain. Cavendish joins fellow cyclists Chris Hoy, Bradley Wiggins, Jason and Laura Kenny, and Sarah Storey in receiving the honour.

Of that group, only Cavendish and Storey are still active, with Cavendish eyeing up what would be a record-breaking 35th stage win at this summer’s Tour, which begins in Florence in a couple of weeks. Cavendish is tied with Belgian great Eddy Merckx on 34 Tour stage wins, having taken his first as a 23-year-old in 2008.

The 2011 BBC Sports Personality of the Year winner, who now races for Team Astana Kazakhstan, announced his decision to retire in May last year, only to reverse it after he crashed out of last year’s Tour one day after his chain skipped when he looked as if he would win his record-breaking Tour stage into Bordeaux.

Cavendish is competing at the Tour de Suisse this week, from where he reacted to the news of his knighthood. “I can only say that I’m truly humbled to be honoured by His Majesty The King,” he said. “It’s always been the biggest privilege to represent my country, and seeing cycling as the sport, pastime and mode of transport I’ve given my life to grow in Great Britain during the span of my career, has given me joy and pride beyond words. I’m truly thankful to everybody that has lived this journey with me.”

Cavendish’s knighthood will be seen as deserved recognition by the vast majority of those who have competed with or against him. Cavendish is a notoriously spiky character who wears his heart on his sleeve. But he is also well-loved for his passion, his generosity to team-mates, his loyalty and his fighting spirit, in particular the way he came back from years of debilitating injury and illness to win four stages of the Tour in 2021.

That extraordinary comeback was the subject of a Netflix documentary, released last summer, which chronicled Cavendish’s life growing up on the Isle of Man, his parents’ divorce, his move to Manchester as a young rider to join the fledgling British Cycling academy, his golden period between 2007 and 2015 when he racked up 133 victories, including the 2011 world title in Copenhagen, stages of all three grand tours, and victory at Milan-San Remo in 2009, before his descent into clinical depression after crashes and illness derailed his career.

The one notable absence from Cavendish’s glittering CV is an Olympic gold medal. He missed out on the track in 2008, when he and Wiggins were reigning world champions in the Madison, and on the road in 2012 when his team-mates failed to deliver him to the Mall for a sprint he was widely expected to win. In 2016, Cavendish won silver in the omnium.

But the Tour remains the pinnacle of cycling, and Cavendish - who is married with four children - has already sealed his legend there, regardless of what happens this summer. Christian Prudhomme, the Tour’s race director, described the Manxman as “the greatest sprinter in the history of the Tour and of cycling” in 2021.

This year’s race, which begins in Florence on June 29, features eight flat stages, the first of which comes on July 1 with a sprint into Turin.

Dot Tilbury, 74, Cavendish’s first coach while leading cycling races for children at the Isle of Man National Sports Centre, said everyone on the island would be rooting for him.

“When I was coaching Mark as a boy, I had no doubt that he would go on to achieve amazing things,” she said. “He was very passionate and driven – he would study courses to work out the best way around and research the latest gadgets to help him succeed.”

She added: “Everyone in the Isle of Man, from young children to grannies, is so very proud of what he’s achieved. He has inspired many children to think that you don’t have to come from a big city to go after what you want in life.”

R.E.M. performs together for first time in nearly 20 years

new edition first tour

R.E.M. 's still got it.

The group — comprised of frontman Michael Stipe, guitarist Peter Buck, bass player Mike Mills and drummer Bill Berry — had a surprise onstage reunion at the Songwriters Hall of Fame ceremony in New York on Thursday, performing their 1991 hit "Losing My Religion."

The performance marked the first time all four members of the indie band took the stage together since their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007.

R.E.M. slowly dissolved after Berry left the band in 1997 after suffering a double brain aneurysm. The band continued on as a trio until 2011, but never quite found their groove without their drummer.

In their speech, Stipe spoke about their latest accolade on behalf of his bandmates.

"Writing songs and having a catalogue of work that we’re all proud of that is out there for the rest of the world for all time is hands-down the most important aspect of what we did," he said. "Second to that is that we managed to do so all those decades and remain friends. And not just friends, dear friends."

The frontman also noted that even amid the band's difficulties, they were united.

"We are four people that very early on decided that we would own our own masters and we would split our royalties and songwriting credits equally," he said. "All for one and one for all."

Songwriters Hall of Fame to induct Steely Dan, R.E.M., Timbaland, Hillary Lindsey

The "Everybody Hurts" band's reunion comes the same day their " CBS Mornings " interview aired where they discussed their breakup and joked it would take a "comet" to get them together onstage again.

"At that point, there wasn’t anything we could agree on really, musically — what kind of music, how to record it, are we gonna go on tour," Buck said of when Berry left R.E.M. "We could barely agree on where to go to dinner. And now we can just agree on where to go to dinner."

He added: "I think we quit at the right time. This is a really good place to finish, you know – great tour, great album, go home."

When asked if they would ever consider a reunion, Buck said, "It'd never be as good."

In 2018, the organizers handed control of the lineup to Maggie Rogers and Lizzy Plapinger (LPX). They built a largely female schedule headlined by Rogers, Billie Eilish and Carly Rae Jepsen.

Since then, the festival has branded itself as a “female-forward” event and become a popular show for LGBTQ people in the D.C. area .

“Whoa, it’s like Lesbopalooza in here ,” Muna’s Naomi McPherson said at last year’s festival, just minutes into the band’s set.

'Washington Post' CEO tried to kill a story about himself. It wasn’t the first time

V2 Washington Post CEO Will Lewis

The Washington Post's new publisher and CEO, Will Lewis, announced a newsroom leadership shakeup during a staff meeting on Monday.

The Washington Post has written twice this spring about allegations that have cropped up in British court proceedings involving its new publisher and CEO, Will Lewis. In both instances Lewis pushed his newsroom chief hard not to run the story.

According to several people at the newspaper, then-Executive Editor Sally Buzbee emerged rattled from both discussions in March and in May. Lewis’ efforts were first reported by the New York Times . The second Post article in May, which was thorough and detailed , ran just days before Lewis announced his priorities for the paper, which is financially troubled.

On Thursday, a spokesperson for Lewis denied the publisher had pressured his editor, saying, "That is not true. That is not what happened."

Buzbee did not recuse herself from the stories, which were overseen by Managing Editor Matea Gold, and drew upon reporters from three desks. Lewis did not block the story from running. He unexpectedly announced Buzbee’s departure on Sunday night, about three-and-a-half weeks after the longer story ran, along with a restructuring of the newsroom’s leadership structure.

It is not the first time that Lewis has engaged in intense efforts to head off coverage about him in ways that many U.S. journalists would consider deeply inappropriate.

A surprise offer

In December, I wrote the first comprehensive piece based on new documents cited in a London courtroom alleging that Lewis had helped cover up a scandal involving widespread criminal practices at media mogul Rupert Murdoch’s British tabloids. (Lewis has previously denied the allegations.)

At that time, Lewis had just been named publisher and CEO by Washington Post owner Jeff Bezos, but had not yet started. In several conversations, Lewis repeatedly — and heatedly —offered to give me an exclusive interview about the Post ’s future, as long as I dropped the story about the allegations.

At that time, the same spokesperson, who works directly for Lewis from the U.K. and has advised him since his days at the Wall Street Journal, confirmed to me that an explicit offer was on the table: drop the story, get the interview.

NPR published the story nonetheless. On Thursday, the spokesperson declined comment about that offer.

That first interview appears to have gone to Puck’s Dylan Byers . It ran a day after the Post’s piece in May.

When the late former Post managing editor Eugene Patterson was publisher of the St. Petersburg Times , he insisted the newspaper report his arrest for driving under the influence of alcohol on the front page. Similarly, NPR has reported independently on controversies and the travails of its own leaders .

Lewis comes from a different tradition. In Britain, he earned his reporting spurs at the Financial Times , then moved over to Murdoch’s Sunday Times as business editor for three years. Lewis then made his name as editor of the Daily Telegraph , a broadsheet newspaper favored by elites in political and financial circles. It has historically been considered by British observers to be closely allied with the Conservative Party there.

Lewis has now named one of his former colleagues at the Telegraph who helped him land a major — and controversial — scoop to lead the Post ’s primary news reporting. That’s Rob Winnett, the Telegraph Media Group’s deputy editor who, like Lewis, is British.

At the Telegraph , the two journalists arranged to pay a source £110,000 for a database detailing inappropriate expenses of British lawmakers at taxpayer costs. It was hailed as a huge story, leading to resignations and reforms. But it violated a key component of major U.S. news outlets’ ethics codes against paying sources.

Lewis left the Telegraph to rejoin the Murdoch media empire. He would later go on to become publisher of the Wall Street Journal, also owned by the Murdochs.

Allegations of cleaning up a hacking scandal

Lewis was initially recruited away from the Telegraph to join Murdoch’s British newspaper wing, now called News UK. And soon Lewis was assigned, along with a close friend, to help the Murdochs address a growing scandal there.

Their tabloids were accused of committing crimes “on an industrial scale,” as former Prime Minister Gordon Brown put it, including hacking into the voicemails and emails of both celebrities and private citizens. The scandal erupted into public view in 2011 when it became clear that the targets of the hacking included the victims of violent crime and veterans killed in combat.

Lewis was to help coordinate with Scotland Yard and Parliamentary investigators.

Instead, attorneys for Prince Harry, Hollywood star Hugh Grant and several former British government officials allege that Lewis stood at the center of an effort to cover up company executives’ knowledge of those practices. In particular, Lewis is accused of giving a green light to the deletion of millions of emails after authorities had asked for the company to retain records for its investigation.

Lewis denies all wrongdoing but has declined further comment. He is not a named defendant in any civil claims, nor has he been charged with any criminality. His actions remain in dispute as part of ongoing cases involving Harry and others.

To date, the Murdoch media empire has paid an estimated $1.5 billion in settlements and costs associated with the hacking scandal. Late last fall, it made a six-figure payment to former Cabinet Minister Chris Huhne , whose scandals had been intensely covered by the tabloids. More recently, News UK settled with Grant, who said he accepted it for “an enormous sum of money” and to avoid paying close to £10 million in legal fees.

Correction June 6, 2024

A previous version of this story incorrectly applied a statement from Washington Post Publisher Will Lewis to the wrong element of his story. Through a spokesperson, Lewis denied he had pressured the paper’s then-executive editor not to allow its reporters cover a story that could have been damaging to him.
