Chase to launch a new travel portal, expand travel business — here's what we know

Andrew Kunesh

According to Chase, $1 out of every $4 of leisure travel is charged to one of its credit cards. However, only a "small percentage" of that travel was actually booked through Chase. To that end, the credit card giant accurately ascertains that its "assets were not differentiated."

To capitalize on that massive volume of travel purchased by its cardholders, Chase just announced the creation of ChaseTravel.com, a new stand-alone consumer travel portal, coming later this year. This announcement was made at the company's 2022 annual Investor Day, as first reported by Skift .

Here's why Chase is going deeper into the travel booking business -- and what this will mean for Chase customers.

For more TPG news delivered each morning to your inbox, sign up for our daily newsletter .

Chase has been moving toward this for a while

Chase expects to have $8 billion in travel sales volume by the end of the year and is hoping to nearly double that to $15 billion by 2025. That's no small amount of money and something that Chase is clearly hoping to capitalize on as travel rebounds from the coronavirus pandemic.

Right now, the company estimates that it's a top-five travel provider. Its impending move to expand Chase Travel to be a leading travel booking platform shows that it has ambitions to move even higher in the ranks.

This announcement isn't too out of left field, as Chase made two key travel-related acquisitions during the coronavirus pandemic: CxLoyalty and Frosch.

CxLoyalty is a technology company that provides travel booking, gift card sales and other transactions to loyalty programs, and currently runs the Chase Ultimate Rewards travel portal .

Meanwhile, Frosch is a leading travel agency that specializes in the corporate and luxury travel segments.

A new Chase Travel could help Chase catch the competition

Growth and innovation are important for Chase's travel efforts, especially as competitors like American Express and Capital One continue to make their travel offerings more robust.

Chase shares that this product "will deliver distinctive content and experiences and become a full-service travel agency to our small business and premium leisure travelers," according to Marianne Lake, the co-chief executive officer of consumer and community banking at JPMorgan Chase.

As an example of the catching up and differentiation that Chase has to do to really compete in this area, Capital One's new travel portal will monitor flight prices and let you know when it expects the cost of airfare to go down. Likewise, the program will actually refund you the difference if it tells you to book a flight and the price later drops. This is a hallmark feature of the Capital One portal and one that the TPG staff has used on a number of occasions.

Capital One also made a handful of travel acquisitions, including Freebird, a travel insurance company, and Lola, a travel management company.

Likewise, Amex Travel has a slew of features offered to premium cardholders. For example, travelers with The Platinum Card® from American Express or The Business Platinum Card® from American Express can take advantage of discounted premium-cabin airfare with the International Airline Program and hotel perks with Fine Hotels + Resorts. The catch is that you must book through Amex Travel to take advantage of these benefits.

What could ChaseTravel.com offer consumers?

Details are still sparse, but we can make a couple of assumptions about Chase Travel based on Chase's current offerings, recent acquisitions and competitor analysis.

First off, Chase Travel is likely to focus on high-end luxury travel. In its Investor Day presentation, the bank specifically stated emerging affluent and high-net-worth individuals as key focus areas when expanding its reach.

jpm travel portal

Chase currently runs the Luxury Hotel & Resort Collection , which offers exclusive perks when staying at select luxury hotels to Chase credit card holders. But right now, you cannot redeem Chase Ultimate Rewards points on LHRC hotel stays, and they must be booked using a separate portal.

With a renewed focus on Chase Travel and the luxury travel segment, I think we're likely to see LHRC integrate directly with the Chase Travel booking portal. This is similar to how Fine Hotels + Resorts is baked into Amex Travel. Likewise, the bank could use its Frosch acquisition to provide curated luxury experiences and trip planning in its portal.

jpm travel portal

We're also likely to see Chase add travel content to Chase Travel. This is in large part due to the bank's recent acquisition of The Infatuation, a major dining publication. The bank could leverage this acquisition to create travel guides and upsell Chase Dining reservations throughout the Chase Travel booking process.

It would also not be surprising if Chase completely reworked the airfare booking process to keep up with the competition. This could mean adding similar price tracking and protection features and adding optional cancel-for-any-reason coverage , similar to what we see with the newly revamped Capital One Travel portal.

When Chase Travel does launch, it will first open to Chase credit card holders, and later open up to Chase's other banking customers.

Bottom line

We now know that Chase is planning to launch a new Chase Travel by the end of the year. The details of this launch are still forthcoming, but the bank seems set on massively expanding its travel business over the next few years. It's a big business for the bank and one that will help it diversify away from traditional banking activities.

We will mail your Rewards Program Agreement once your account is established. If you become a Chase Online customer, your Rewards Program Agreement will also be available after logging in to chase.com/ultimaterewards Opens in a new window . How you can earn points: You'll earn points on purchases of products and services, minus returns or refunds, made with a Chase Sapphire Preferred credit card by you or an authorized user of the account. Buying products and services with your card, in most cases, will count as a purchase; however, the following types of transactions won't count and won't earn points: hotel accommodation purchases through Chase Travel that qualify for the $50 Annual Chase Travel Hotel Credit, balance transfers, cash advances and other cash-like transactions, lottery tickets, casino gaming chips, race track wagers or similar betting transactions, any checks that access your account, interest, unauthorized or fraudulent charges, and fees of any kind, including an annual fee, if applicable. 2 points ("2X points") on travel purchases: You'll earn 2 points for each $1 spent on purchases made in the travel category. 5 points ("5X points") on Chase Travel purchases: You'll earn 5 points total for each $1 spent on purchases made using your card through Chase Travel (3 additional points on top of the 2 points earned on each purchase in the travel category). Any hotel accommodation purchases made using your card through Chase Travel that qualify for the $50 Annual Chase Travel Hotel Credit, won't earn points. "$50 Annual Chase Travel Hotel Credit" means the statement credit that is automatically applied to your account annually on hotel accommodation purchases made using your card through Chase Travel, up to an annual maximum accumulation of $50. "Annually" means the year beginning with your account open date through the first statement date after your account open date anniversary, and the 12 monthly billing cycles after that each year. 3 points ("3X points"): You'll earn 3 points for each $1 spent on purchases in the following rewards categories: dining at restaurants including takeout and eligible delivery services; select streaming services; online grocery (excluding Target ® , Walmart ® and wholesale clubs). 1 point ("1X points"): You'll earn 1 point for each $1 spent on all other purchases. 10% anniversary points bonus: Each account anniversary year, you'll earn bonus points that equal 10% of your total spend in points from purchases made with your credit card during the previous account anniversary year at a rate of 1 point for each $1 spent. "Account anniversary year" means the year beginning with your account open date through the anniversary of your account open date, and each 12 months after that. 5 total points ("5X points") on qualifying Lyft rides through 03/2025: You'll earn an additional 3 points for each $1 spent when your card is used for qualifying Lyft products and services purchased through the Lyft mobile application through 03/31/2025. Qualifying Lyft products and services include rides taken in Classic, Shared, Lux, or XL modes; bike and scooter rides; and subscription and membership products. Purchase of gift cards, car rentals, vehicle service centers, miscellaneous fees and other Lyft products and services are excluded from this promotion. Future Lyft products or services may not be eligible for additional points. You may see "5X" in marketing materials to refer to the 3 points in addition to the 2 points earned on travel purchases (see above). The additional 3 points will appear on your billing statement in a separate line from the 2 points. Lyft is not responsible for the provision of, or the failure to provide, Chase benefits or services. How you can use your points: You can use your points to redeem for any available reward options, including cash, gift cards, travel, and pay with points for products or services made available through the program or directly from third parties. Redemption values for reward options vary. Points expiration/losing points: Your points don't expire as long as your account remains open, however, you will immediately lose all your points if your account status changes, or your account is closed for program misuse, fraudulent activities, failure to pay, bankruptcy, or other reasons described in the terms of the Rewards Program Agreement. Rewards Categories: Merchants who accept Visa/Mastercard credit cards are assigned a merchant code, which is determined by the merchant or its processor in accordance with Visa/Mastercard procedures based on the kinds of products and services they primarily sell. We group similar merchant codes into categories for purposes of making rewards offers to you. Please note: We make every effort to include all relevant merchant codes in our rewards categories. However, even though a merchant or some of the items that it sells may appear to fit within a rewards category, the merchant may not have a merchant code in that category. When this occurs, purchases with that merchant won't qualify for rewards offers on purchases in that category. Purchases submitted by you, an authorized user, or the merchant through third-party payment accounts, mobile or wireless card readers, online or mobile digital wallets, or similar technology will not qualify in a rewards category if the technology is not set up to process the purchase in that rewards category. For more information about Chase rewards categories, see chase.com/RewardsCategoryFAQs Opens in a new window .

Third-Party Merchants: The listed merchant(s) are in no way affiliated with Chase, nor are the listed merchant(s) considered sponsors or co-sponsors of this program. All trademarks are the property of their respective owner(s).

$50 Annual Chase Travel Hotel Credit: A statement credit will automatically be applied to your account when your card is used for hotel accommodation purchases made through Chase Travel, up to an annual maximum accumulation of $50. Annual means the year beginning with your account open date through the first statement date after your account anniversary, and the 12 monthly billing cycles after that each year. Annually, the first $50 in Chase Travel hotel purchases will not earn rewards points. Statement credit(s) will appear on your monthly credit card billing statement within 1-2 billing cycles after your purchase posts to your account.

Book Through Chase Travel: When you use points to redeem for cash, each point is worth $.01 (one cent), which means that 100 points equals $1 in redemption value. Each point you redeem for travel booked through Chase Travel is worth $.0125 (one and a quarter cents), which means that 100 points equals $1.25 in redemption value, and points are worth 25% more than if redeemed for cash. For example, 60,000 points are worth $750 when redeemed for travel purchases, or $600 when redeemed for cash. The cost of travel is based on the rates and fares available through Chase Travel, including the online portal and call center, and may not reflect all rates and fares that are available through other sales channels. If you choose to use points and your Chase Sapphire Preferred credit card to pay for your purchase, each point will be worth $.0125, but your credit card will be charged the full remaining dollar amount.

Cardmembers Eligible for Chase Pay Over Time: Eligible cardmembers are those with access to Chase Pay Over Time who use a participating Chase credit card for eligible purchases. Qualifying Instacart purchases include only those orders purchased by you, or an authorized user, with a Chase Sapphire Preferred credit card through Instacart.com or the Instacart mobile application (gift cards excluded). You can renew U.S. passports online again

The State Department reopened its passport renewal portal just in time for a busy summer of travel.

jpm travel portal

The State Department on Wednesday reopened its online passport renewal portal , bringing back a trial service that had not been available for more than a year.

The service, available to a limited number of travelers who meet certain requirements, is part of a beta program intended to streamline the renewal process for Americans. For now, the program is available only for routine renewals, not expedited services.

Every day beginning at 1 p.m. Eastern time, the State Department will accept a limited number of applications. It will gradually increase capacity daily. Once the portal has reached its daily threshold, it will close until the following afternoon, senior State Department officials said in a press briefing.

Applying online does not guarantee a faster processing time, but it does mean skipping some lag time of sending your application by mail .

To be eligible for the online system, travelers must be U.S. citizens and residents 25 and older who have already had a passport with 10-year validity, among other requirements. Here are a few big examples:

  • Applicants can’t request a change to their name, gender, date of birth or place of birth.
  • They aren’t traveling internationally for at least eight weeks from the day they submit their application.
  • They’re applying only for a regular passport, and they possess their current passport. (It can’t be lost, stolen, damaged or mutilated.)
  • They can pay with a credit card or debit card, or an ACH (automated clearing house) payment, and are able to upload a digital passport photo in the JPEG file format.
  • Their recent passport was issued between nine and 15 years before the application date. (It can be expired.)

The full requirements are available on the State Department website . Those who do not qualify for the online renewal process can still apply by mail.

This is the second round of public testing of the online renewal system, which was first announced in 2021 through an executive order and was paused in March 2023. According to the State Department website, more than 500,000 customers applied during that initiative. Since last spring, the government has continued working on the system in private, carrying out closed testing to improve the portal.

Officials said this next round of public testing should last a couple of months, but they would not specify how many applications will be accepted each day. The gradual nature of the release is designed to track user feedback and address issues in a manageable fashion.

Since the application backlog that began snowballing in 2020, the State Department says it has addressed issues and wrangled processing times back to pre-pandemic levels . The agency did experience an uptick in wait times last summer after seeing a record number of applications.

Officials say they have “substantially staffed up” and “implemented a number of efficiencies” that have brought processing times down, and they expect to have “no trouble meeting demand” as summer travel ramps up. Routine application services should now take six to eight weeks, and expedited services two to three weeks. Processing times are made public on the State Department website .

The unstoppable American consumer slowed in May as retail sales barely budged

Woman in shopping aisle deciding between two products

Consumers barely increased spending in May from April as still high prices on groceries and other necessities and high interest rates curbed spending.

Retail sales rose 0.1% in May, below the pace that economists projected, according to the Commerce Department. And April sales were revised downward — a 0.2% decline, from unchanged. Sales rose 0.6% in March and 0.9% in February. That comes after sales fell 1.1% in January, dragged down in part by inclement weather.

Excluding gas prices and auto sales, retail sales rose the same amount.

Retail sales in May, in part, were depressed by falling gas prices. Excluding sales from gasoline, sales were up 0.3%. The national average price for a gallon of unleaded gasoline was $3.45 as of Monday; a month ago, it was $3.59, AAA said.

Government retail data isn’t adjusted for inflation, which was unchanged from April to May, according to the latest government report. High inflation helps to inflate retail sales figures.

Still, economists said the report reflected an increasingly cautious consumer. But they point to a silver lining: a weaker-than-expected retail sales report increases the likelihood that the Federal Reserve will start to cut interest rates in a few months.

“Consumer spending is cooling in a fairly orderly fashion,” said Jeffrey Roach, chief economist for LPL Financial in Charlotte, North Carolina. But he added, “So far, the economy could pull off a soft landing, especially if the Fed is quick to adjust policy as conditions change.”

Clothing surges, gas falls

Details of the report were mixed. While auto and vehicle dealer sales rose, areas related to home sales fell.

Sales at clothing and accessory stores rose 0.9%, while electronics and appliance stores posted a 0.4% gain. Online sales rose 0.8%. But business at building material and garden supplies fell 0.8%. Sales at gas stations were down 2.2%.

The retail sales data also offers only a partial look at consumer spending because it excludes things like travel and lodging. However at restaurants, the lone service category tracked in the monthly retail sales report, sales fell 0.4% in May.

A strong job market and rising wages have fueled household spending but spending remains choppy in the face of rising credit costs and still high inflation, though it has eased. To give shoppers some relief, Target , Walmart and other chains have rolled out price cuts — some permanent, others temporary, heading into the summer months.

Earlier this month, the government reported that America’s employers added a robust 272,000 jobs in May, accelerating from April and an indicator that companies are still bullish enough in the economy to keep hiring despite stubbornly high interest rates.

The government’s report on consumer inflation last week, showed how inflation cooled substantially in May, as the cost of gasoline, new cars, and even car insurance fell.

Consumer prices excluding volatile food and energy costs — the closely watched “core” index — rose 0.2% from April to May, the government said last week. That was down from 0.3% the previous month and was the smallest increase since October. Measured from a year earlier, prices increased 3.3%, less than the 3.6% gain a month earlier.

Consumers’ mood stays pessimistic

Federal Reserve officials said last week after the report came out that inflation has fallen further toward their target level in recent months but signaled that they expect to cut their benchmark interest rate just once this year.

Still, anxiety over still stubborn inflation helped drive down U.S. consumer sentiment for the third consecutive month. The University of Michigan’s consumer sentiment index , released Friday in a preliminary version, dropped to 65.6 this month from a final reading of 69.1 in May.

Retail executives say shoppers are still buying, but they’re being choosy about what they spend their money on.

Darren Rebelez, president and CEO of Ankeny, Iowa-based Casey’s Casey’s General Stores, Inc. which operates more than 2,600 convenience stores in 17 Midwestern states, noted shoppers remain resilient, but the company is also in a sweet spot. Roughly 25% of the chain’s customers have household income of less than $50,000, and seven of the bottom 10 most affordable states are in the stores’ footprint so customers can stretch their dollars further.

Still, Rebelez says customers are making choices like shifting away from candy because of skyrocketing cocoa prices and moving into baked goods like cookies, brownies and donuts. They’re also buying less bottled soda in favor of cheaper soda fountain beverages.

“They’re not giving up on their indulgences,” he said. “They’re just choosing to spend it differently so they can get a little more value for the money.”
