Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins, Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas, TLC

TLC and Shaggy look to warm up the tour circuit with their forthcoming Hot Summer Nights jaunt featuring special guests En Vogue and Sean Kingston.

Slated to kick off June 1 in Alabama, the Hot Summer Nights 2023 Tour will land in major markets, including New York, Miami, California, Texas and more. TLC has a laundry bag of Billboard Hot 100 hits across the ’90s and ’00s. Their four chart-toppers include “Creep,” “Unpretty,” “Waterfalls,” and “No Scrubs.” Last June, Chilli, and T-Boz performed at the Hollywood Bowl with Boyz II Men and left the crowd enthralled with their string of classics. The crown jewel of the night came when T-Boz introduced their performance of “Unpretty.” “This next song is near and dear to my heart because I wrote it from my heart. My boyfriend then made me feel like I wasn’t good enough. With social media now, the song still rings true today.” Then to applause, she added, “I kicked his a– to the curb.”

Xscape ugly asses could never!

' src=

FAKE True Tea….

' src=

They did that already and their were the hedlines so stop hating go work instead of talking loser

' src=

But they did already! In 2017. The Great Xscape Tour. Completely sold out every arena they hit. Xscape is actually more relevant than TLC these days.

' src=

I luv Xscape but it will take more than relevancy to be in TLC’s level, so please do not come for TLC!!!

' src=

Who said anything about them being on TLC’s level babe I said what I said. Xscape is more relevant in 2023 like it or not it’s facts.

' src=

CANT WAIT!!!!!!

' src=

Disappointed SWV & Xscape couldn’t get their s*** together for a 35 date tour but good to see TLC & En Vogue going on tour together. Shaggy & Sean Kingston could do without them on the lineup though. But again, En Vogue toured with Salt N Pepa last year for New Kids on the Block tour.

' src=

That’s going to be nice Envogue the best vocal group and tlc the best group song wise!

' src=

Not a fan of the C. Not interested.

' src=

Funny how all these older artists that yall refer to as “flops” are making bank touring. No gimmicks, no stunts, no Onlyfans pages just raw talent.

' src=

TLC have been sampled by Ed Sheeran and Drake. Referenced as huge inspiration by Lady Gaga, Beyonce, etc. and worked with J. Cole. Bow down.

' src=

I’ve seen En Vogue with Max and Dawn and more than once without them. They’re not bad as a trio, but the sound and energy isn’t as great without Max and Dawn. I have honestly prayed that they will work out their differences.

I thought TLC retired with their final album. Great to see them back (even though they’re not coming out my way).

' src=

The tour should’ve been TLC, Xscape, En Vogue and SWV

Music | bay area bounces back with job gains in march, led by south bay hiring, subscriber only, music | review: tlc honors legacy of lisa ‘left eye’ lopes during amazing show, tlc shines during hot summer nights tour in concord.

Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas, of TLC, performs in the Hot Summer Nights concert Sunday at Concord Pavilion. (Shae Hammond/Bay Area News Group)

You just can’t replace Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes.

Nobody knows that better than TLC, the ’90s R&B-pop hitmakers who have been without the amazing rapper — who provided the “L” in the band’s name — since her death at the age of 30 in 2002.

So, TLC didn’t even try during Sunday night’s well-attended concert at Concord Pavilion, making the wise decision to incorporate recordings of Lopes’ vocals into their performance rather than to have someone else handle the verses onstage.

The result was a moving one-hour-plus set of music that not only championed the group’s current duo incarnation — with Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins and Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas, the “T” and “C” in TLC, respectively — but also underscored the mighty legacy of Left Eye.

TLC was, by far, the highlight of the last stop on the successful Hot Summer Nights tour, which kicked off June 1 and included two dozen dates. The other acts on the bill were Oakland’s own En Vogue, “Beautiful Girls” singer Sean Kingston and Grammy-winning reggae-pop act Shaggy.

The latter co-headlined the tour with TLC and actually went on last at Concord. Yet despite Shaggy’s ample collection of hits — including “Boombastic,” “In the Summertime,” “Angel” and “It Wasn’t Me” — it was clear from surveying the T-shirts and hearing the roars from the crowd that TLC was the main reason some 10,000 fans turned out to the show.

tlc and en vogue tour

Backed by a four-piece band and accompanied by an equal number of male dancers, TLC kicked things off by going back to its first album — 1992’s “Ooooooohhh… On the TLC Tip” — for “Ain’t 2 Proud 2 Beg.”

The joyous, playful “Ain’t 2 Proud 2 Beg” is primetime Left Eye — a tremendous showcase for her rapping abilities — and thus a great way to illustrate right from the start of the show that her recorded vocals would be a big part of performance.

One of the biggest selling points of TLC was how well the three very-different-sounding vocalists worked together. Chilli would take the high road with her crystal clear and classically strong R&B vocals, while T-Boz delivered the low, smokey cool counterpoint. And then, of course, Left Eye would just launch the whole thing into the stratosphere with her stellar rhymes.

Watkins and Thomas both sounded ’90s-era strong as they continued on through two more first-album tracks — “What About Your Friends” and “Baby-Baby-Baby” — before diving into “CrazySexyCool” territory for the first time for a strong take on “Red Light Special.”

Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins, of TLC, performs in the Hot Summer Nights concert featuring TLC, Shaggy, Sean Kingston and En Vogue at the Concord Pavilion in Concord, Calif., on Sunday, July 9, 2023. (Shae Hammond/Bay Area News Group)

They’d draw four tracks in all — from the 10 performed in the set — from that 1994 multiplatinum-selling blockbuster. They’d also pull strongly from the 1999 triumph “FanMail,” including for one emotional ballad that turned out to a true highlights of the night.

“This next song we are about to sing is very near to my heart,” Watkins said in the introduction to “Unpretty,” a song that strikes a blow against the conception that one needs to change in order to be meet someone else’s standard of beauty. “Because I wrote it from the heart.”

The big finale, of course, was “Waterfalls” — possibly the greatest pop song of the ’90s. And it certainly pleased the fans, who sang along from start to finish with gusto. Yet, I also can’t help but think it was also a missed opportunity.

The Left Eye rap in the song is the best known and most highly cherished moment of her career. It’s also one that is so wonderfully documented in the “Waterfalls” video. If TLC had used the moment to actually showcase Lopes on the big video screens — for the first time of the night — the place would’ve erupted in a fashion that may well have been heard in San Ramon.

As it stood, however, the TLC show was still a resounding success.

tlc and en vogue tour

En Vogue was also entertaining during its half-hour-plus set, with the three talented vocalists — Terry Ellis, Cindy Herron and Rhona Bennett — first taking the stage to perform the hit “My Lovin’ (You’re Never Gonna Get It)” from the 1992 sophomore effort “Funky Divas.”

The Oakland troupe continued on to wow the hometown East Bay crowd with such favorites as “Hold On,” “Whatta Man” and “Free Your Mind.”

En Vogue went on after Sean Kingston, who opened the show with a set that included the hits “Beautiful Girls” and “Eenie Meenie.” Shaggy went on last, kicking off his set with “Mood” and continuing on through such crowd pleasers as “In the Summertime,” “Boombastic” and “Angel.”

'Hot Summer Nights' tour brings a little bit of everything to Ruoff

tlc and en vogue tour

Whenever an artist refers to the Ruoff Music Center crowd as "Noblesville," I get a little worried.

Sure, it's technically correct. We are in Noblesville. And "Hello metropolitan Indianapolis" is a mouthful. Most skirt the issue entirely by just referring to us as "Indiana," which works.

But "Noblesville" makes me think the performer read the tour poster one time before hitting the stage.

Enter Jamaican reggae fusion artist Shaggy, who finished off a Saturday show that included Sean Kingston, En Vogue and co-headliners TLC. After busting out a few quick songs, he initiated a hype train that immediately stalled at the station.

Review of last weekend's WonderRoad: Jason Isbell, Marcus King propel WonderRoad day two past earlier tech problems

"Noblesville, Illinois!" he shouted. "Wait, is that it?"

Shaggy appeared to squint at what I would guess was his setlist tapped to the stage floor.

"No, Indiana!" he corrected.

The crowd, a big one that probably leaned more toward TLC on the bill, cut him some slack. And so will I, as the dancehall star proceeded to lead a decent set with plenty of color and energy. I'm sure he'll study up next time.

The "Hot Summer Nights" tour rolled into appropriately sweaty weather, but it didn't seem to hurt the attendance. Folks arrived early and stayed late for what could be referred to as a nostalgia show, but I'll get into why that descriptor would be a little lazy.

Sean Kingston opened with a brief, unremarkable set.

En Vogue then proceeded to blow me away.

The group's three members emerged on stage wearing slightly different gold dresses. Unlike the headlining acts, they did not have a band, backing dancers or a roving video display. Their voices and dance moves were more than enough to steal the show before the sun had even gone down.

I don't know what "Free Your Mind" sounded like live in 1992. I was 4 years old. But I can tell you it was note-perfect with tremendous energy in 2023.

After "Don't Let Go (Love)," the audience basically forced a momentary halt to what had been a snappy set to give the trio a standing ovation. An a cappella intro finished the set with "Hold On."

TLC followed, and some context is required.

More: Q&A: TLC on the longevity of their music, life on the road

The group has been through a lot since achieving remarkable success in the '90s. It's well known that core member Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes died tragically in 2002, but Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins has had a variety of health problems that, at one point, forced her to relearn basically every physical action — from singing and dancing to walking and blinking.

For me, TLC was the first contemporary R&B band I became a fan of. I was in the sixth grade when "FanMail" released in 1999 — when MTV actually showed music videos, and no one had a better run of them than TLC.

With those tidbits in mind, TLC put on a quality performance Saturday. Watkins was never going to be dropping low into her dance moves or belting into the mic, but they gave us the hits and a few new memories.

Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas was excellent. She sang beautifully and led the group's four backing dancers with gusto.

Before launching into a wonderful version of hit "Unpretty," Watkins explained she wrote the song's lyrics several decades ago, but the message has not changed — particularly given the rise of social media.

She told me in a recent interview that the group's music is timeless. That can sometimes be wishful thinking on an artist's part. You hope what you create will last forever. It feels important at the time, but maybe it isn't.

Watkins was right. There were dozens, maybe hundreds of children in TLC gear, and they were mouthing the words to "Waterfalls" with the rest of us.

Shaggy then brought a different energy to the stage just before 10 p.m. his party-leading toasting approach.

It was a "ladies let's dance, and men hold the purses" vibe. He even told the crowd at one point "at a Shaggy show, it's ladies in the front, and dudes in the back."

I had not seen these artists live before Saturday. I wasn't sure if Shaggy would still pull off the signature reggae hum vocals he was known for in the '90s, but it was there. He even added "Noblesville" and "Indiana" to various lyrics to various songs, including "Strength of a Woman," to prove it to us.

He raced through a few of his songs and covers. I would have liked a little more of the signature "Boombastic," which he played at the beginning of his set.

"Angel" was quite solid, and "It Wasn't Me" got a big ovation to end the night. There was even a mediocre Frank Sinatra cover, "That's Life."

All told, "Hot Summer Nights" delivered a range of experiences — most of them good, some even a little better. My primary takeaway from it was that we should all see En Vogue any chance we get.

Theatres in Moscow

Cultural life of Moscow city is various and rich! Operas, ballets, symphonic concerts... Russian composers have created some of the most beautiful classical music. Russian classical music is very popular in Moscow. It is performed in many beautiful historical venues. Do not forget to include a visit to a concert hall in your itinerary when you are planning your stay in Moscow! And do it in advance.

There are almost no restrictions on dress code in Russian theatres. Visitors may wear jeans and sports shoes, they may have a backpack with them. Only shorts are not allowed.

A typical feature of Russian theatre – visitors are bringing a lot of flowers which they present to their favorite performers after the show.

Here are some practical advices where to go and how to buy tickets.

The Bolshoi Theatre

The Bolshoi Theatre is the oldest, the most famous and popular opera and ballet theatre in Russia. The word “Bolshoi” means “big” in Russian. You can buy a ticket online in advance, 2-3 months before the date of performance on the official website . Prices for famous ballets are high: 6-8 thousand rubles for a seat in stalls. Tickets to operas are cheaper: you can get a good seat for 4-5 thousand rubles. Tickets are cheaper for daytime performances and performances on the New Stage. The New Stage is situated in the light-green building to the left of the Bolshoi's main building. The quality of operas and ballets shown on the New Stage is excellent too. However, you should pay attention that many seats of the Bolshoi’s Old and New Stages have limited visibility . If you want to see the Bolshoi’s Old Stage but all tickets are sold out, you can order a tour of the theatre. You can book such a tour on the official website.

If you want, following Russian tradition, to give flowers to the performers at the end of the show, in the Bolshoi flowers should be presented via special staff who collects these flowers in advance.

In August the Bolshoi is closed.

The Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Music Theatre

This theatre is noteworthy. On one hand, it offers brilliant classical opera and ballet performances. On the other hand, it is an experimental venue for modern artists. You can check the program and buy tickets online here http://stanmus.com/ . If you are opera lover, get a ticket to see superstar Hibla Gerzmava . The theatre has a very beautiful historic building and a stage with a good view from every seat. Tickets are twice cheaper than in the Bolshoi.

The Novaya Opera

“Novaya” means “New” in Russian. This opera house was founded in 1991 by a famous conductor Eugene Kolobov. Its repertoire has several directions: Russian and Western classics, original shows and divertissements, and operas of the 20th and 21st centuries. It is very popular with Muscovites for excellent quality of performances, a comfortable hall, a beautiful Art Nouveau building and a historic park Hermitage, which is situated right next to it. You can buy tickets online here http://www.novayaopera.ru/en .

Galina Vishnevskaya Opera Center

The Opera Center has become one of the best theatrical venues in Moscow. It was founded in 2002 by great diva Galina Vishnevskaya. Nowadays its artistic director is Olga Rostropovich, daughter of Galina Vishnevskaya and her husband Mstislav Rostropovich, great cellist and conductor. Not only best young opera singers perform here, but also world music stars do; chamber and symphonic concerts, theatrical productions and musical festivals take place here. You can see what is on the program here http://opera-centre.ru/theatre . Unfortunately “booking tickets online” is available in Russian only. If you need help, you can contact us at and we can book a ticket for you.

Tchaikovsky Concert Hall and The Great Hall of Moscow Conservatory

These are two major concert halls for symphonic music in Moscow. Both feature excellent acoustics, impressive interior, various repertoire and best performers. You can check the program here http://meloman.ru/calendar/ . You need just to switch to English. Booking tickets online is available only for owners of Russian, Ukrainian and Belorussian phone numbers. If you need help, you can contact us and we can book a ticket for you.

Moscow International Performing Arts Center (MIPAC)

This modern and elegant concert hall houses performances of national and foreign symphony orchestras, chamber ensembles, solo instrumentalists, opera singers, ballet dancers, theatre companies, jazz bands, variety and traditional ensembles. Actually, it has three concert halls placed on three different levels and having separate entrances. The President of MIPAC is People’s Artist of the USSR Vladimir Spivakov, conductor of “Virtuosy Moskvy” orchestra. You can see pictures of the concert halls here http://www.mmdm.ru/en/content/halls . The program is impressive in its variety but is not translated into English. You can contact us at and we can find a performance for you.

The sprawling, mind-boggling metropolis of Russian Moscow has long been one of the theatrical stages on which the great dramas of Europe and Asia have been played out in grand style. Burned by Napoleon in 1812, immortalised by Tolstoy, utilised by the Bolsheviks and championed as a bastion of heroic defiance by the post-war communists, it’s almost hard to believe just how defining the historical events that found their home on Moscow’s streets have been. Moscow tour guides will easily be able to mark the major must-see landmarks on the map, from the onion-domed orthodox Saint Basil's Cathedral, to the political powerhouse of Red Square just next door, while others will be quick to recommend a ride on Moscow’s famous subterranean metro system, or a visit to the UNESCO-attested Novodevichy Convent on the city’s southern side. But Moscow is a city also in the throes of a cultural wrangling between the old and the new. Creative energies abound here: Boho bars and pumping super clubs now occupy the iconic mega structures of the old USSR; high-fashion outlets, trendy shopping malls and luxurious residential districts stand as testimony to a city that’s now the undisputed playground of the world’s super-rich, while sprawling modern art museums dominate the cultural offering of the downtown districts north of the Moskva River.
