North Carolina Wine Tours

Click here to read our FAQs about our wine tours (at the bottom of this page).

With over 200 wineries to choose from in both North and South Carolina, there are plenty of options available for either a quick day trip or a weekend get away, so what are you waiting for?  Plan your visit !  The wine industry in the Carolina’s is tried and true, this is not a new fad still “working out the kinks”.  The industry has been around for quite sometime; steadily growing and improving over the years into award winning wines, vineyards, and wineries.  Today these places are beautiful destinations for either the casual visitor looking for a last minute wine tasting or someone searching for that beautiful venue for a special event like a wedding or corporate retreat .

With many of the wineries clustered only a few miles apart from one another, it is entirely feasible to visit 4-6 wineries during a single day tour.  In some areas, there are so many wineries, the limiting factor to visiting all of them is merely time and the quantity of wine you could reasonably  sample in one day!  So how do you get around to all of these wineries; especially when you have a good sized group (6+) of friends that all want to go together?  That is where the Van in Black can help…

Raffaldini Vineyards

Popular regions/areas that we can provide tours for include (click through for more info about that region):

Asheville | Charlotte | Greenville/Spartanburg | Tryon | Hendersonville | Yadkin Valley | Appalachian High Country

Let the Van in Black do the Driving for you on Your Winery Tour!

We provide safe and reliable transportation for everyone in your group for any number of wineries you want to visit.  All of our winery tours are completely custom and flexible to meet the needs of you and your group.  We also have WSET and Court of Master Sommelier certified wine experts on our staff that can make your experience truly unique, exciting, and elevated. We service most of the North Carolina wine regions including the Yadkin Valley,  Tryon Foothills, Asheville, and the Appalachian High Country.  If the winery is in the mountains or Piedmont area of North or South Carolina, we’ve got you covered, we service that area.  If you don’t know which specific wineries you want to visit we can suggest some too! We regularly update our blog on the various wineries and wine trails that we visit, so be sure to check in often to hear about the harvest and happenings in the wineries of the Carolinas!

All that is left is for you to book a tour and have an unforgettable trip!

Need help finding a winery to visit or coming up with that perfect wine trail?  We are more than happy to help make some suggestions.  Our blog is also a great resource for ideas as we write about many of the areas that we frequent (and include pictures!).  You can also visit the North Carolina Wine website at www.NCWine.org .  It is an excellent resource for learning more about the great wines and wineries in North Carolina.

Asheville Wine Tour

Frequently Asked Questions about our Wine Tours:

What regions/areas does van in black service.

Our service area for pickup/drop-off includes Asheville, Charlotte, Greenville/Spartanburg, Tryon, Hendersonville and everything in between. This puts several wine regions in range including many of the North Carolina AVA regions. Some of the more popular wine regions include Yadkin Valley, Swan Creek, Crest of the Blue Ridge (Hendersonville), Appalachian High Country, and the Tryon Foothills. There are also a number of other wineries available to visit that are not part of a defined region (not yet at least).

Does Van in Black Help Plan the Itinerary?

Absolutely yes! We are more than happy to help plan your wine tour itinerary so that you have the best experience possible. We know the best places to visit based on previous customer feedback, the wine preferences of your group, the time of the year, etc. Once a tour is booked with Van in Black we reach out (about 2-3 weeks before your booking date) and encourage you to ask questions and leverage our experience to ensure you have a 5-star experience when visiting the vineyards and wineries we typically visit. Our help will include basic suggestions of places to visit and for the places that accept reservations, we will make those for you as well. For us to help you have the best experience possible, we need to have your itinerary confirmed at least 1 week prior to your booking date. Please help us help you by confirming your itinerary in a timely manner.

Do We Have to Pick the Duration of Our Tour When We Book?

No. Van in Black does not force you to book a tour duration when booking a wine tour with us. We have a 4 hour minimum on all of our tours but you are free to enjoy your tour day for however long you want. You essentially book for the day but pay by the hour. If the weather is perfect and you are thoroughly enjoying the day, you can decide the day of the tour that you want to linger somewhere and enjoy the experience. Van in Black will never tell you that your time is up and that it is time to go. We want you to have the flexibility and freedom to enjoy the day however you want. When you book with us you will pre-pay the 4 hour minimum as your deposit. Any hours used over the initial 4 hour deposit will be due at the conclusion of your booking and settled up directly with your driver.

Do I Have to Limit My Tour to 4 Hours?

No. The 4 hour minimum is exactly that; it is just a minimum requirement to book a tour for the day but you are free to enjoy your tour for as long as you want. Most tours last 6-7 hours. After your tour you will settle up with your driver for any additional time used over the initial 4 hour deposit that you paid.

How Long Do Most Tours Last?

A lot of it depends on the region you depart from and the individual group. Since the vehicle is exclusive to your group we will progress at your pace. We are never going to say “Time’s Up!” at a particular location to move you along to the next spot. That being the case, however, most tours that visit 3 wineries typically last around 6-7 hours. If you are departing from Charlotte it would likely be longer just because of the time it takes to get to the vineyards.

Can Van in Black Make the Necessary Reservations for Our Group?

When possible, yes. Not all wineries take or require reservations and it will also depend on the size of your group. Whenever possible we do make the necessary reservations and/or let the wineries know to expect your group. Many of the vineyards we frequent will be expecting you and have a table waiting for your group.

Can We Have Food and Drinks in the Van?

Yes. Unfortunately, we had to implement a cleaning fee ($100) on our terms and conditions if things get out of control with the food and drinks but this will not effect 99.9% of the tours that we operate. All that we ask is that you treat our vehicles like you would treat your own. All of our vehicles get a thorough cleaning and vacuum in between all bookings so reasonable crumbs, etc. are not going to be an issue. Van in Black is also a legitimate “For Hire” vehicle in North Carolina (not all transportation providers are) which means that passengers can legally have open containers inside the vehicles (note that this is NOT the case in South Carolina). Give us a call if you have any other questions about this policy.

Do We Have To Meet Van in Black at a Pickup Location?

No. We prefer (almost insist) that we pick you up from a home, hotel, or Airbnb so that we will be dropping you off at a safe place after you have been drinking. It kind of defeats the purpose of hiring us if you have to drive anywhere after we drop you off. This is one of the main reasons why our clock starts when we pick up and not when we leave our garage (if you are inside our supported service areas). We want you to be safe and we don’t want you to worry about driving.

When Do I Supply the Pickup Details?

Our booking process is very simple and doesn’t require a lot of details up front. Most people book months in advance and won’t know a lot of the details at the time of their booking. When you book you are reserving the date and we will reach out to you, typically 2-3 weeks before your booking, to confirm all of the details like pickup address, time, etc. At this time we will also want to confirm the itinerary so that we can coordinate your visit with the wineries (if necessary). For us to help you have the best experience possible we need to have your itinerary confirmed at least 1 week prior to your tour date.

What is Included in Your Pricing?

Our pricing is for transportation only and does not include tastings or driver gratuity. Anything you purchase at the wineries is between you and the wineries and is to be paid directly to the winery. Most people will do simple tastings a the wineries and these generally average about $20-$30/person. Note that Van in Black is not responsible for the pricing at the wineries and pricing is subject to change at anytime. Some wineries will also have rules for large groups that may add gratuity or require everything to be settled up on one check.

Is it a Group or Shared Tour With Other People?

No. All of our tours are exclusive and the vehicle is dedicated to your group. This allows us to provide door-to-door service and the speed/length of the tour is up to you. It also means that we aren’t going to cancel on your the day of the tour due to lack to lack of participants.

Will You Pick Us Up From Our Accommodations?

Yes. Van in Black provides door-to-door service on all of our tours. You won’t have to drive somewhere to meet us meaning you won’t have to drive back after drinking all day. As long as you are in a supported city our time starts when we pick you up. We can also pick you up from areas outside supported cities there would be an additional charge for this. Contact us with any questions.

Does Van in Black Have Elevated Wine Tour Experiences Available?

Yes! We have several options available to elevate the wine tour for guests who are a little more wine savvy. Some of these options are exclusively available to Van in Black. This could be something as simple as pairing you up with one of our WSET certified drivers/guides or something a little more robust like a private barrel room tasting experience or even having a Sommelier sit down with you for one (or all) of your tastings. If you are interested in something a little more elevated then give us a call to discuss available options.

Does Asheville NC Have Wineries?

Absolutely yes! The city itself has a few urban wineries with their tasting rooms located downtown. Furthermore, there are a number of wineries, about 14, with vineyards that are just outside of the city. In total there are 20+ wine interests in and around of the city that are worth a visit for your next Asheville Wine Tour.

Does Charlotte NC Have Wineries?

Like Asheville, Charlotte has some urban wineries and wine interests but if you want the vineyard experience that you need to get out of the city. The big clusters of wineries are a little further outside the city compared to Asheville but there are a few that are easily reached from the city and worthy and any Charlotte wine tour .

NC Winery Tours

Enjoy the the finest Wineries and Vineyards that North Carolina has to offer with one of our NC Winery Tours packages from SilverFox Limos.  Feel free to bring your own wine for the ride up as well as your favorite snacks.  There are many great options with Yadkin Valley, Swan Creek, and Haw River Valley Appellations.  Make sure to check out the North Carolina wineries website at www.visitnc.com/wine .  There are over 100 wineries and vineyards in North Carolina alone.

Yadkin Valley Appellation - The Yadkin Valley became North Carolina's first federally-approved American Viticultural Area (AVA) in 2003. With this appellation, the wineries and vineyards of and area cover all or part of Surry, Yadkin, Wilkes, Davie, Davidson, Forsyth and Stokes counties began labeling their wines "Yadkin Valley," proudly proclaiming the fruits of our region. www.yadkinvalleywinecountry.com

Swan Creek Appellation - The Vineyards of Swan Creek enjoy a unique climate and soil composition conducive to the production of vinifera wine grapes. The foothills of two mighty mountain ranges – the Brushys and the Blue Ridge - kick up cooling breezes that dance down through the Swan Creek region. www.swancreekvineyards.com

Haw River Valley Appellation - The Haw River Valley is a 868-square-mile region located in Alamance, Caswell, Chatham, Guilford, Orange and Rockingham counties in North Carolina. It is an agricultural area that has a long growing season, with 214 frost-free growing days, making it a great place for growing crops that need a long growing season like tobacco and red vinifera winegrapes. www.hawrivervalley.com

SilverFox Limos does not guarantee that the wineries will allow large groups, so we recommend that you contact the wineries and inform them of the date you are planning to come with your group to make sure they do not have a special event (weddings, private events, etc.) that may prevent your visit.  We also recommend that you call them to schedule any wine tastings, lunches or special needs.  You can click on the link below to go to all the websites of each winery to get their contact info and calendars for peak harvest times and special event dates.

Below are a couple NC Winery Tours options that we offer.  However, you DO NOT have to do one of these suggested tours.  We can take your group to the Wineries of your choice!  We can also help you plan a customized tour, to help you make the most of your experience. If you have any questions, please feel free to call us and we will help you through it.  Ask for James or Lisa who are our winery tour transportation specialist.

What guests are saying

Discover why our guests rave about The Grape Experience, and join the growing list of satisfied wine enthusiasts who've experienced the best of North Carolina's vineyard scene.

We chose to spend our 9 year anniversary on a wine tour with The Grape Experience and it was truly the most wonderful thing we have done in North Carolina so far!

I can't say enough good things about The Grape Experience. Every little detail was very thoughtfully planned for our private birthday party and Irma was very attentive and took great care to ensure everything was just so.

Irma organized the most perfect picnic for our girls day at Rafaldini winery located in Rhonda, NC! Everything was beautifully set up upon our arrival and all we had to do was show up and enjoy!

"A week late but ya know, life. NC/Charlotte friends - I cannot recommend @thegrapeexperience enough! Anyone who knows me, knows my love for wine and a good vineyard tasting day out. Irma planned every details based on our preferences, picked us up from our doorstep, made all of our bookings, ensured we were properly fed (crucial part of day out tasting) and drove us across the Yadkin Valley. I highly recommend!"

Irma was so great and easy to work with. My wife and friends was more than happy

The entire experience from start to finish was fantastic! The entire day was beautiful!!

Asheville Wine Tours

Asheville is one of the top tourist destinations in the country. For good reason too! From staring in movies, to being the home of the Biltmore Estate, it has countless attractions for every visitor. Asheville is a hub of art, culture, nature, adventure, amazing food, local breweries and a number of high quality wineries . There are some great urban wineries and tasting rooms inside the city; however, the vineyards just outside of the city are true gems of the area. Woven into the natural beauty of Western North Carolina, most of the vineyards are about 45-50 minutes outside the city limits.

Why burden yourself with driving, when you can have someone else do it for you? One of the best ways to visit the wineries around Asheville is to hire a professional tour company for safe, reliable and comfortable transportation.   Asheville Wine Tours  is operated by  Van in Black , the premier local transportation company providing luxury service.  Climb aboard our Mercedes-Benz luxury SUV’s or larger Euro-style vans and let our professional guides show you everything this wonderful area has to offer.

We are so much more than a shuttle, Asheville Wine Tours has certified wine experts on staff (WSET and CMS) and has access to elevated experiences at select wineries that nobody else can offer. The vehicles provide the highest level of comfort, from massage chairs in select SUVs to stadium or limo seating in our luxury vans. All of our tours are completely custom and we provide door-to-door service, ensuring that none of your guests needs to be a designated driver. As your tour is private, you will never need to worry about sharing your vehicle with other tourists or worry about your tour being cancelled for lack of participation. Experience the VIP treatment and book your Asheville Wine Tour with the best provider in the region.

Tryon Foothills of North Carolina

What Makes Asheville Wine Tours Unique:

Visit North Carolina

3-Day Coastal Winery & Vineyard Getaway

Spend three days touring some amazing vineyards, tasting delicious wines, and exploring quaint towns and charming destinations.

Along the picturesque North Carolina coast , vineyards are growing various red and white grapes – including the famed scuppernong muscadine grape – and wineries are making award-winning wines to taste and take home. Several of the destinations also have gift shops, wine accessories, cafés and overnight accommodations to make for a vibrant three-day trip.

Day 1: Outer Banks & Oriental

Begin your coastal wine exploration on the Outer Banks with a stop at Sanctuary Vineyards in Jarvisburg. Located on a seaside farm, its 10 acres of syrah, tempranillo, viognier, norton and muscadine grapes are nestled within hundreds of acres of farmland and wildlife. Check its Instagram to see if a food truck is on-site, and get there in time for lunch and enjoy a tasting.

Drive along the Outer Banks and then head west through the charming town of Manteo as you venture to Vineyards on the Scuppernong . The Scuppernong River region produces the native scuppernong muscadine grape, which is considered to be one of the healthiest grapes grown and makes for a delicious fruity wine. Stop by its quaint tasting room, then stroll through galleries and eateries afterward.

nc wine tour packages

Next, head into Oriental, known as the “Sailing Capital of North Carolina,” and check in at the Oriental Marina & Inn . Situated on the town harbor, the inn features one-, two- and three-bedroom suites, all with water views. Walk next door to Toucan Grill & Fresh Bar and feast on a seafood dinner while watching the boats come and go. Afterward, enjoy live music on the patio or stroll along the harbor.

Day 2: Central Coast

After breakfast and coffee at The Bean on the harbor, spend the morning exploring the riverfront town of New Bern . Visit Tryon Palace and the North Carolina History Center , wander through the spectacular gardens, historic homes and quaint shops of downtown, or stop by the Birthplace of Pepsi  before continuing your tour of the coastal wineries.

Next, head to Swansboro , the “Friendly City by the Sea,” for lunch at Yana’s Restaurant , with its 1950s diner interior and tasty burgers.

Heading northwest, stop by Huffman Vineyards for a taste of dry whites and reds, as well as its large selection of fruit wines. Try these in the tasting room or on the outdoor patio and chat with the winemakers.

For your next stop, it’s only a short drive to the Country Squire Restaurant, Inn and Winery  in Warsaw. Check in to your room overlooking the vineyard and settle in for a relaxing evening of wine and food. Take in the gardens, grounds and charming gazebo as you head to the Tartan Wine Tasting Room & Gift Shop. Taste the various wines or have a pre-dinner glass while you explore the gift items there. Then enjoy a sumptuous dinner in the dining room of a steak cooked to perfection, or poultry, pork or seafood entrées.

Day 3: Wilmington & Ocean Isle Beach

Get an early start this morning and drive to Rose Hill to see the world’s largest frying pan . Sheltered under a gazebo, the pan is 15 feet in diameter, weighs two tons and can cook 365 chickens at a time.

Next, head to Duplin Winery , the North Carolina coast’s oldest winery. Dating back to the 1970s, Duplin Winery has a tank capacity of more than 1.8 million gallons and is one of the largest wineries on the East Coast. Its award-winning wines include Magnolia, a favorite summertime wine, and Hatteras Red, which pairs perfectly with North Carolina barbecue. Take a tour, taste the many sweet and dry wines, and purchase a bottle to take home.

From there, head into Wilmington and Noni Bacca Winery . Choose from about 50 different international wines, including Italian-style reds, premium whites, thirst-quenching fruit wines and decadent dessert wines.

If all of the tastings have created an appetite, you’ll love The George on the Riverwalk in downtown Wilmington. Featuring Southern coastal cuisine, it serves lunch, dinner and Sunday brunch.

From there, follow along the coast to Ocean Isle Beach and Silver Coast Winery . Situated by lush woods and only 15 minutes from the beach, Silver Coast Winery offers tours of its production facility, wine tastings of traditional European-styled wines, a gift shop and an eclectic art gallery featuring local artisans. If you want to spend more time in Ocean Isle Beach, make plans to visit  Jinks Creek Waterfront Grille , where the outdoor dining options feature a spacious patio, tiki bar and gazebo, all with amazing views.

Three ducks waddling on lawn with green vineyards in background

For the last stop on the trail, Tabor City and Grapefull Sisters Vineyard awaits. Tour the vineyards, taste some of the muscadine wines, sit on the serene deck, bask in the charm and toast to your wonderful wine weekend.

Winery schedules vary seasonally, so it’s a good idea to call ahead to confirm hours. Please drink responsibly. Designate a driver.

The 20 Best NC Wineries to Visit

[Updated April 13, 2023]

With a wealth of Asheville breweries  earning the mountain town the nickname “beer city,” plus a wealth of  breweries in Boone  and Brevard, Western North Carolina is known for some of the nation’s best microbrewing.

But NC wineries have also been gaining an increasingly high-profile national reputation. Farmers in the area have gradually realized that old tobacco fields, which have been largely drained of nutrients, make great North Carolina vineyards.

It should come as little surprise, because North Carolina is the native home to two of the nation’s favorite wild grapes, muscadine and scuppernongs.

But NC wine has expanded far beyond muscadine wine, which has the reputation of being very sweet. And many winemakers are trying to change that stereotype as well.

Due to the variety of climates in the state , North Carolina wineries are growing all kinds of grapes now.

In addition to Niagara grapes (the only native grape used widely in commercial wine production), vineyards in NC are now planting cabernet, merlot, chardonnay, sangiovese, and more.

This just adds to a rich history of grapes and North Carolina wines: The “ Mother Vine ” on NC’s  Roanoke Island is estimated to be at least 300 years old.

Duplin Winery is the oldest and largest winery in NC and, in fact, the entire East Coast. And the Biltmore Estates Winery is the nation’s most-visited winery.

Read on for our guide to the best North Carolina wineries (specifically those west of I-77), for those visiting the Blue Ridge Mountains and/or cruising the Blue Ridge Parkway .

Consequently, this winery is currently putting out over 40 different varieties. This includes standards like merlot and cab, as well as lots mixed with other fruits, such as strawberries , black raspberries, and passionfruit.

Private wine tastings are available here for groups of 12 or more with advance reservations. Daily wine tastings are available on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, and make for a fun day trip from Waynesville .

Winery near Mt Airy NC - Old North State Winery Tasting

19. Old North State Winery

308 North Main Street, Mount Airy NC • (336) 789-9463

With wines produced on Main Street in Mount Airy, the Old North State Winery has a simple, but strong selection of wines to try and an amazing  restaurant  in which to taste them.

The winery was founded by Ben Webb in 2002. After finishing college, where he studied both viticulture and enology, he planted a 10-acre vineyard on the family  farm .

A little later, he added another 18 acres in the Yadkin Valley.

Old North State Wines include Riesling, petit manseng, cabernet franc, Chambourcin, and muscadines, a native  North Carolina   “wild” grape.

Ben decided to open his winery in a former hardware store (built in 1890) in Historic Downtown Mount Airy to help the local economy. He also brought in a fine chef to handle the food, making this one of the best places to visit in Mt Airy.

Wineries in Mount Airy - Round Peak Vineyards Tasting Room

20. Round Peak Winery

765 Round Peak Church Road, Mount Airy NC • (336) 352-5595

Located a few miles west of Mount Airy NC, Round Peak Winery has 12 acres of vines planted (mostly French and Italian varietals). It’s a long-standing vineyard in the ever-expanding collection of Yadkin Valley wineries .

Round Peak Winery was started in 1998, and then passed on to new owners Ken Gulaian and Kari Heerdt 10 years later. They kept some existing grapes and introduced some new grapes as well.

All grape wines at Round Peak are estate-grown and hand-picked, and there’s a selection of both dry and sweet wines, including some 100% cherry wines.

In addition to the winery, Round Peak is also associated with Skull Camp  Brewery and produces a line of easy-drinking canned wines under the Skull Camp name.  – by Jonathon Engels, featured image 0f Souther Williams Vineyard by Bret Love & Mary Gabbett

We encourage anyone who loves the Blue Ridge region to learn about the  Leave No Trace   principles of responsible environmental stewardship.

Stay on marked trails, take only pictures, pack out your trash, and be considerate of others who share the trails and parks you explore.

Remember that waterfalls and rocky summits can be dangerous. Never try to climb waterfalls or get close to a ledge to get a selfie.

When you're exploring the wilderness, it's better to be safe than to be a statistic!

Jonathon Engels

After visiting North Carolina for the first time, Senior Writer Jonathon Engels and wife Emma spent 2 years exploring Western NC in search of a homestead property. They first lived in Brevard, where Jonathon taught writing at Blue Ridge Community College and extensively explored the Blue Ridge Parkway and Pisgah National Forest. For the last several years they have lived just off the BRP near Elkin, Southwest Virginia, and the NC High Country. The couple also volunteers with the Surry Old Time Fiddlers Convention, the Elkin Valley Trail Association, and Reeves Downtown School of Music.
