Highlights, insider tips, and some suggestions for improvement.

Overall impressions of the cruise & the trip

Our family enjoyed the cruise on the Caribbean Princess out of Houston for seven days in the Western Caribbean visiting Cozumel, Roatan, and Belize. The weather was clear, sunny, warm, and humid. It was totally relaxing for the most part except for the norovirus  outbreak, a small one, which the ship handled quickly and under the radar.

A carriage ride around Roatan.

Cruising is a great getaway: You only unpack once, visit different ports, get off and tour if you'd like or just staying on board and enjoy the day and facilities. This is what we enjoy. This was our fourth cruise through the Caribbean, but it will be our last. Yes, there are different ports, but the stores become repetitive after a while, peddling the same merchandise (which we don't want or need), only with different logos.

Highlights & top ship features

The Crown Steak House and Sabatini’s Italian Restaurants were great in food and service, but you should know there's a $25/person surcharge for them.  The menu was very creative, the service great, and the food super.

The Lido deck theater was fun and a main attraction on the ship. We enjoyed a lot of first-run movies plus some oldies along with recorded concerts of various stars.

My wife and me while dining in a specialty restaurant on Caribbean Princess.

Impressions ... of the dining

Caribbean Princess has two main dining rooms, and the food went from just OK to great, depending on the menu. Lobster night was superb — it always occurs on the last formal night. Other times, the dining experience was uneven.

null

This being our second cruise on Princess, I would rate the food as not as good as the Grand Princess , which we were on a few months earlier. Service in the two main dining rooms was great aboard Caribbean Princess — much better than the service we received on the Grand. The buffet was a buffet, need I say more?, since I am not a great fan of buffets. The food was served and not self-service due to the norovirus. (Only a small percentage of the passengers came down with it, we were told.) We skipped the Caribe Restaurant Buffet, which changes is ethnic menu daily, as well as the pizza and hamburger/hot dog bars at poolside.

 Impressions ... of the stateroom

The stateroom we had was a mini suite with balcony. It was totally comfortable, and we enjoyed it. The one problem is the step into/out of the bathroom. At night in the dark or in rough seas, it is an accident waiting to happen. On the Grand Princess, we had some rough weather, more elderly people, and a lot of falls and minor injuries.

Impressions … of the entertainment

The entertainment was not to our standard or what we expected. The shows were sort of hammy. "The British Invasion," which we also saw on the Grand, was just bad and not what one expected in the way of music. The comedians left a lot to be desired and the material seemed to be just rehashed.

Impressions … of the activities

The ship had continual activities for all ages, you just had to pick what you wanted to do.  At times, desired choices conflicted, since there were so many and ran from 6 am till 1 am.

Impressions … of best bets on shore

Cozumel : Take a local horse and buggy trip around town and through the community.  It's a great opportunity to see Cozumel as it is, which is quite different from the strip along the waterfront.

Roatan : The beach trip to Tabyana Beach and the reef was a fun and enjoyable experience. The beach was beautiful, lunch great, water warm and clear, lots of fish.  On the downside, the reef, though live coral, was brown and gray.

Part of the Altun Ha Mayan ruins in Belize.

Belize : Went on the Altun Ha Mayan Ruins and River Trip. The bus trip to the ruins was an hour long and we had a great guide. The ruins were awesome and the guide was great in taking the time to provide the history. The trip to lunch and the boat took another hour.  Lunch was edible but nothing special. Then we took a boat trip down the river and back.  Nature’s willingness to cooperate plays a major role, from seeing crocs, monkeys, iguanas, birds, termite nests, manatees, dolphins, and many more, including their migration patterns and time of year.

Insider tips

Be prepared for the norovirus on trips to the Caribbean, since there have been numerous outbreaks on various cruise ships in the past year. Carry and use plenty of hand sanitizer, wash hands frequently, and even wear latex gloves when using the railings. Be prepared to kick back, relax, enjoy, and don’t hold unrealistically high expectations, otherwise you may be disappointed. Unpack, kick back, relax, and enjoy — that's what it's all about regardless of destinations.

Passenger makeup

Who's on board? This cruise had passengers from small children to the almost centurions, with most being in the 50 to 70 age range from all walks of life. We met several first-time cruisers as well as a couple that has cruised on Princess over 800 days.

Internet connectivity

Internet connectivity is from the satellite and I believe through a wireless router on the ship. Online connectivity was much better than my experience on the Grand. Not what you have at home, but serviceable. The price was in the 50 to 80 cents/minute range, depending on how many minutes you buy.

Us in port in front of Caribbean Princess.

Impressions …. of room for improvement

Some things that could have been better: The embarkation and luggage handling left something to be desired, with long lines and slow delivery of luggage to staterooms. It took 60 minutes between boarding and when we arrived at our stateroom, and it took almost 4 hours for our luggage to arrive. Not like the Grand out of San Francisco, where it was under 30 minutes from when the porter grabbed your luggage and you were at your stateroom with the luggage waiting there.  Debarkation was a different story, swift and efficient: It took under 20 minutes from our checkout time to pick up our luggage, pass through Customs, and exit the terminal.

Traveling the 2.5 hours down the channel from Houston limited the ship to what alcoholic drinks it could serve, and the casino was closed until the ship cleared Texas law and reached international waters. Not a strong positive if you wanted a good drink or leave a little money at the tables, but Houston is the departure port.

The distribution of information and activities seemed to be lacking, even though most were listed in the daily newspaper. It just seemed secretive on some things and activities. (E.g. the balloons in the atrium and then disappeared late in the evening and the talent competition between the two main dining rooms was only announced at dinner, but not in the daily news. Understandable on the norovirus since the ship did not want to create a scare.

A boutique shop aboard Caribbean Princess. We passed!

Our 7-day cruise on Caribbean Princess in the mini-suite came to about $1,100/person. The itinerary was depart Houston at 5 pm Saturday, Sunday was formal night, Monday in Cozumel, Tuesday in Roatan, Wednesday in Belize, Thursday (formal night) and Friday were sea days, and on Saturday we disembarked  starting at 8 am.

My wife and I were fortunate to have our youngest son and his wife from Austin cruising with us on this totally enjoyable and fun experience.

Carnival Cruise Planning – Honduras, Belize, Cozumel

By A Cowboy's Wife | December 28, 2012

A good while back, my family was offered a cruise.  We turned it down, regrettably.  My boys, at the time, couldn’t grip the idea of being on a huge boat in the middle of the ocean. Over the last year or so, I think they wish they had gone.  I know I do.  Since my husband felt bad about us not going, he agreed to swoop me away to the romantic destinations of Honduras, Belize, and Cozumel on the Carnival Magic .  Okay, I don’t know how romantic those places are but just the fact that I’ll be there with my handsome cowboy is enough to make my heart flutter.  We are celebrating our 20th anniversary with this cruise and if all goes well, we’ll renew our vows.

magic_composing

Planning a Carnival Cruise wasn’t hard for us because some good friends of ours already had a trip planned. Since they are regular cruisers, we trusted their judgements on pretty much everything.  This particular cruise is on the Carnival Magic and costs more than many of the other cruises.  Seeing the costs of the other cruises though, made me realize exactly why people turn into regular cruisers.  It’s definitely an affordable option to travel to destinations that you’d otherwise never visit.

PICKING YOUR ROOM

There are tons of options here.  And if you’re able to buy at the early saver price, you’ll most likely take advantage of surprise price drops closer to cruise time, allowing you to get the lowest price possible for your trip.  There are always promotions happening too so be sure to watch for those.   In order to find your ideal room, you’ll have to play around with the booking options.  I constantly switched them around to see which rooms, on what floors would be available.   And to your right hand side, you’ll find the price that updated with each change you make. They make it easy for you to see exactly what you’re getting.

carnival cruise booking

Because we are celebrating our 20th anniversary, we opted for a Cove Balcony so that we could be very close to the water.   I’ve only heard good things about them and I think it’s a room that will enjoy immensely.   You see those windows under the life boats?  Those are the cove balconies.  THAT is close to the water now!  Super excited.

Man am I lucky to have friends that have been there, done that with all this stuff.  I am trusting them with what excursions to take and who to book through. You can of course book through Carnival which I’d be doing normally but since my friend Vicki knows her stuff, I’m letting her take the reins on this.  If you do not book through Carnival though, be cautious of scammers!

GETTING YOUR PAPERS IN ORDER

A passport is highly recommended, however, there are many people who don’t travel with them but instead, use their birth certificates and marriage license.  This was a hard decision for us. We want the security of a passport but at $200+, it was hard to swallow.  This time around, we opted for our birth certificates and marriage license. If we love the cruise, we’ll definitely pay for a passport so that we can go on more, with assurance.  Whatever you decide, you need to make sure you have them prepared and ready.  I personally recommend you take photos of all of it with your phone.  This is a great way to have a copy of them.

anatomy-cruise-carry-on

This is the stage I’m at.  When you don’t know what to expect as far as events and weather, it makes it hard to pack.  I have gotten some great tips though as to what to take onboard and it sounds like less is more.  Here are a few things I plan to pack:

  • Mix-Matched clothes.  I’ll probably take neutral bottoms and various tops.  I’ll make sure that all can be worn with 1 of 3 pairs of shoes that I plan to take.  Flip flops, TOMS shoes, and boots.
  • Power Supply.  I’ve heard there is only one outlet in the room so I’ll make sure to take one so that we can plug in at least 2 or 3 things, like number 3.
  • A fan.  We cannot sleep without a fan.  I’m hoping to find a louder small fan to take so that we can have some noise that we are use to.
  • Water bottle.  This will be handy to refill and carry around.
  • Cameras with a backpack. Laptop, cell.
  • Headache pills and motion sickness medicine….just in case.

GETTING TO THE DOCK

Depending on where you live will most likely help make this decision a bit easier.  We live about 7 1/2 hours from Galveston so ideally, we’d like to leave the day before so that we can wake up rested on the day of sailing.  Of course doing this means we’d have to foot the bill for a hotel room.  We also have the option to go with a group and split the costs of the fuel. We’d leave the morning of sailing and get there around boarding time.  I don’t know. This is undecided at the moment!

And that’s as far as I am right now.  I’ll be posting all along the way.  Carnival is giving us free wifi for the duration of our trip so I’ll be able to post and/or update through facebook.  You can bet I’ll be taking photos at the very least, making you all jealous of course.  teehee  Until then….

Disclosure: Carnival has taken the liberty to provide some enhancements for our sailing given it’s our 20 th  wedding anniversary!  They are going above and beyond to make this cruise a special one for us.  All opinions are my own, always have been, always will be.  For realz peeps.

Wow! I think you two are going to have any amazing time. My husband has been trying to get me to agree to a cruise for years but I’m still iffy on it. I told him the only way I’d agree is if the destination is Hawaii and there’s no kids.

' src=

December 28, 2012 at 1:43 pm

I once wanted to go to Hawaii but Tyler said he wasn’t impressed so I figure I wouldn’t care too much for it. And of course, we are taking no kids this time around but would love to take them in the future. :)

We went on a Carnival cruise 3 years ago and really enjoyed it! So ready to go again. We also sleep with a fa and didn’t have one on the cruise. We had a balcony room, so we propped open the balcony door each night and went to sleep with the sound of the water. It kept the room fresh and airy, and we enjoyed the soothing sounds. Have so much fun!!

Roatan, Honduras is a beautiful place. Try to go out of the compound it is owned by Carnival. We did and had a wonderful time learning of this beautiful place. Belize was scary. We tendered in picked up a few treasures and back to the boat. Enjoy and try eating breakfast and/or lunch in the dinning room. The food and coffee are much better.

10 Best Cruises to Jamaica and the Caribbean

Enjoy the island spirit on a cruise to the land of reggae and rum.

cruise cozumel belize honduras

Oceania Cruises

Jamaica is one of the most popular Caribbean destinations, and if you've ever lounged on one of the island's gorgeous beaches with a fruit-filled rum punch in hand, it's easy to understand why. It helps that Jamaica is extremely accessible. You can fly there (direct from New York City in four hours, at that), but many prefer the experience of island hopping onboard a Caribbean cruise.

The major cruise ports of Jamaica are Montego Bay, Ocho Rios, Falmouth, and Kingston. On the northeastern coast, there's also Port Antonio, which isn't suitable for most large ships but attracts boutique cruise lines and private yachts.

Whether you're interested in discovering pirate history, hiking through the rainforest to see waterfalls, or searching for the best jerk chicken on the island, you're bound to find a cruise itinerary that suits you. Explore some of the best cruises to Jamaica. And don't forget to check for seasonal festivals that take place at each port.

Viking Ocean Cruises

Alastair Miller/Viking Cruises

This 14-night round-trip cruise from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, stops in seven countries. The ship sails the Caribbean for two days before making its first stop in Montego Bay, Jamaica. There cruise-goers can hike the rain forest, visit Dunn's River Falls, or ride a bamboo raft down the Great River, among other excursions. The cruise offers activities for foodies, thrill seekers, history buffs, and beach bums.

After departing Montego Bay, the ship sails the Caribbean and Panama Canal for two days before making its next stop at Colón, Panama. Visit Indigenous villages or take a walk around the colorful city. The following stops — Puerto Limón, Costa Rica; Roatán, Honduras; Belize City, Belize; and Cozumel, Mexico — showcase the Caribbean's lushest landscapes, ancient Mayan ruins, pristine beaches, and lively towns.

Between ports, a historian lectures on pirates and treasure hunters, pre-Columbian civilizations, and the Age of Discovery aboard the 930-guest Viking Mars . When you aren't attending a lesson, you can book a treatment at the Nordic spa, catch a live performance in the theater, or order a martini in the Explorers' Lounge.

Carnival Cruise Line

Aboard the Carnival Sunrise, cruisers depart from Miami for a five-night trip . Spend the first day at sea before arriving at Grand Cayman. On the island, you can visit a rum cake factory or go snorkeling. After leaving the Cayman Islands, the ship moves on to Ocho Rios, Jamaica, where excursions include driving through woodlands in a dune buggy among other options. The ship then spends another day at sea before arriving back in Miami.

Onboard dining options include a steakhouse, an Italian restaurant, Guy's (as in Guy Fieri's) Burger Joint, a barbecue spot, a cantina, and a sushi joint. Adults can find a quiet spot in the 21-and-up Serenity Retreat, or they can get together in a pub, lounge, or piano bar.

For kids, Seuss at Sea provides a character parade, interactive story time, themed breakfasts, and crafting sessions. Meanwhile, Camp Ocean offers supervised activities like games, dancing, movies, video games, and kids-only meals.

Travel from Panama City to Miami on Oceania Cruises' Sirena , stopping along the South American coast along the way. After a day of sailing through the Panama Canal, the first stop of this 10-day cruise is Cartagena, Colombia. Here, guests can hop off the ship to see mansions and a historic fort. The following day is dedicated to Santa Marta, Colombia's oldest city.

The ship then visits Oranjestad, Aruba; Willemstad, Curacao; and Kralendijk, Bonaire, before turning its bow to the north toward Florida. After a day of sailing the Caribbean, the ship drops anchor at Port Antonio, Jamaica, the gateway to Blue and John Crow Mountains National Park . Guests get a chance to hike, swim, and explore the town square for a day before sailing the Atlantic. A day trip in The Bahamas' capital, Nassau, is the perfect penultimate stop before you reach your final destination, Miami.

Stay entertained while at sea with the pool, theater, casino, and spa. Guests can also visit a wide variety of restaurants or enjoy an afternoon tea service.

Royal Caribbean International

Royal Caribbean

Depart Orlando for a six-night, round-trip cruise that kicks off with a day at sea. In Labadee, Haiti, the first stop, guests can enjoy plenty of beach time and even zip line over the ocean. From there, the ship travels to Falmouth, Jamaica, located between Montego Bay and Ocho Rios. Choose from excursions like river tubing, swimming at the Blue Hole, or sample and learn about Jamaican coffee. Another option outside of tours is the Artisan Village which easily connects Jamaican artists and their work to cruisers.

With another day at sea, travelers can enjoy the spa, fitness center, live performances, kids' activities, and a variety of restaurants aboard the Adventure of the Seas . Fill a day at Royal Caribbean's private Bahamian CocoCay at Thrill Waterpark, where you can ride down North America's tallest waterslide, or Coco Beach Club, which features an overwater cabana. The cay is also home to Chill Island, a beach "neighborhood" where you'll find quiet relaxation, cabana rentals, and restaurants. The next morning, the ship arrives back in Orlando.

Disney Cruise Line

David Rourke/Disney Cruise Line

Consider taking a tour of the Kennedy Space Center before boarding the Disney Fantasy in Cape Canaveral. The first full day of this seven-night cruise is spent at sea, but pools, a spa, kids' clubs, restaurants, games, and entertainment provide much to do on the way to Cozumel, Mexico. There, guests can snorkel or dive among coral reefs, shop for handmade souvenirs, and relax on the beach.

The next port is George Town on Grand Cayman, where you can explore the botanical gardens, swim at Seven Mile Beach, or visit the town's shops and restaurants. In Falmouth, Jamaica, the next day, optional activities include a zip-line adventure, waterfall hike, or Good Hope Estate. Enjoy the ship's amenities while cruising to Disney Castaway Cay.

On this private island, guests will find a water play area, a white-sand beach, walking trails, a snorkeling lagoon, boat rentals, a teen hideout, and adults-only Serenity Bay. Don't forget to check into other Disney Cruise tips and secrets before you go. The ship sails overnight to arrive in Port Canaveral for disembarkation.

Celebrity Cruises

Michel Verdure/Celebrity Cruises

Departing from Fort Lauderdale, a six-night cruise onboard the Celebrity Apex makes its way to The Bahamas for its first port-of-call, CocoCay. Visitors can take a dip in the Caribbean's largest freshwater pool, get a different perspective from a hot air balloon, or order a drink from the swim-up bar.

The next port of call, the historic town of Falmouth, Jamaica, has a wide range of activities. Take a trip to the Green Grotto Caves and Dunn's River Falls or raft along Martha Brae River. In George Town on Grand Cayman, guests can shop, go on a catamaran cruise, snorkel, or sample the island's cuisine, including conch.

With two days spent at sea, the third and sixth days, guests have time to enjoy the ship's restaurants, casino, cocktail lounges, and entertainment.

MSC Cruises

Ivan Sarfatti/MSC Cruises

The Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) offers a well-rounded 14-night itinerary aboard the MSC Divina , which departs and returns to Miami. While this voyage visits eight countries, there's a total of five days at sea. That means guests will have plenty of downtime to rest and enjoy the ship. Onboard the elegant ship, cruisers will find a casino, a spa, kids' and teens' clubs, restaurants, and bars.

The first stop is the Bahamian capital, Nassau, where guests can kick off their two-week vacation with a VIP cabana experience on Blue Lagoon Island. The ship returns to Miami for a day before continuing on to Ocho Rios, Jamaica.

In Ocho Rios, you can swim in the sparkling iris Blue Hole or climb to the top of Konoko Falls. Next up is Oranjestad, Aruba where travelers take in the turquoise waters of Arashi Beach or learn about aloe farming at the Aruba Aloe Museum & Factory .

Subsequent ports include Cartagena, Colombia, a UNESCO World Heritage site with cobblestone streets and pastel-colored buildings; Colón, Panama; and Puerto Limón, Costa Rica. In Colón, experience Emberá culture up the Chagres River or see sloths and tropical birds near Gatún Lake. Take the day in Puerto Limón to explore the jungle, looking for crocodiles, monkeys, and manatees.

Following a day ashore on the Honduran island of Roatán, Honduras, the ship turns north once again toward Miami.

Holland America Line

SeanPavonePhoto/Getty Images

Spend three weeks sailing turquoise waters with Holland America Line . The cruise includes a total of five days at sea, meaning there is plenty of downtime to enjoy the ship without getting cabin fever. Throughout the round-trip from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, guests visit 11 countries throughout both the eastern and western corners of the Caribbean.

After setting sail from Florida, Eurodam first turns westward toward the Bahamas, Jamaica, Honduras, Belize, and Mexico. Ports include Half Moon Bay Falmouth, Roatán, Belize City, and Cozumel. The ship then turns north to return to Fort Lauderdale, with a stop in Key West along the way, before making its way to the eastern Caribbean.

The second half of the cruise visits Philipsburg, Saint Maarten; St. John's, Antigua and Barbuda; Fort-De-France, Martinique; Roseau, Dominica; Basseterre, St. Kitts and Nevis; and St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. Guests can enjoy one more visit to Half Moon Bay in the Bahamas before returning to Fort Lauderdale for disembarkation.

Excursions, while an additional fee, include snorkeling, nature walks, visits to Mayan ruins, zip line adventures, boating to secluded beaches, and even walking underwater for a scuba-like experience without needing certification.

On board the ship, spend time relaxing with a spa treatment, getting active playing pickleball, or listening to a live performance.

Explora Journeys

MarcioDufranc/Getty Images

Setting off on a 10-night round-trip voyage from Miami, the Explora II sails for a day on its way to Ocho Rios, Jamaica. Onboard, guests can enjoy their ocean-view suites, nine restaurants, or four pools. Of course, there is also a luxurious spa, live entertainment, and high-end shopping such as Cartier and Rolex.

In Ocho Rios, music aficionados should visit Nine Mile, where Bob Marley began his career and is now buried. Spend another day at sea en route to the Honduran island of Roatán. There, tour the Roatán Rum Company and enjoy trying a few dishes to experience the island's culture.

Next up is Belize City, Belize. Here, a chocolate farm and the first jaguar reserve are just two of many exciting options — including the Great Blue Hole . The ship then spends several days circumnavigating Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula.

Ports include Cozumel and Progreso. Off the coast of Cozumel, divers can visit a Mesoamerican reef. Alternatively, guests can head inland to swim in cenotes. Mayan culture is prominent in Progreso thanks to sites that have been immaculately preserved such as Chichén Itzá, one of the seven new wonders of the world . Spend a last day onboard, sailing north, for disembarkation in Miami.

Princess Cruises

hzechphotography/Getty Images

Many cruises leave from ports in Florida, but this 10-night Princess cruise embarks in the Gulf of Mexico from Galveston, Texas. Aboard the Regal Princess , guests will visit five countries and spend four days at sea making this a well-balanced itinerary. Enjoy the ship's amenities including seven restaurants, cooking demonstrations, a relaxing massage at the spa, or join a Pure Barre class.

The ship starts southward with its first stops including Cozumel, Mexico; Roatán, Honduras; and Belize City, Belize. Following a day at sea, the cruise continues on to Montego Bay, Jamaica, and Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands. The ship then cruises back to Galveston for disembarkation.

Colorful Cozumel offers cruise-goers great shopping and access to Mayan ruins while Roatán offers adrenaline-pumping activities like zip lining. Those who can't get enough of snorkeling will find ample opportunity among the Belize Barrier Reef, Montego Bay, and off the coast of Grand Cayman's Seven Mile Beach. In fact, Belize and the Cayman Islands are among the best snorkeling destinations in the world . So, be prepared to rent (or pack your own) mask and fins.
