Lataguri is a quaint settlement located just outside Gorumara National Park on National Highway No. 31. It is considered as the entry point to the Gorumara Park. Lataguri is situated 30km from Jalpaiguri Town Station, 27 km from Jalpaiguri Road Station, 25 km from New Mal junction, 75 km from New Jalpaiguri Railway Station (NJP) and 95 km. from Bagdogra Airport (IXB). Lataguri is a small town situated in the Jalpaiguri District of West Bengal. It is located on the outskirts of Gorumara National Park, 66 km away from Siliguri. Dense forests and the vast grassland makes this region home to many species of flora and fauna. 

During the visit of Hiuen Tsang to Assam, the major part of the region was under the kingdom of Kamrupa. The kingdom extended up to River Karatoya and also included Dooars, which was earlier part of the kingdoms of Bhutan and Cooch Behar. In 1864 under the command of Hedayet Ali, the British captured the region and divided the Bhutanese kingdom into two parts. In addition to this, after 1869, the region was merged with Jalpaiguri District. 

Raj Bangshis are the principal residents of the region while the Mech, the Rava and the Toto also reside in the region from many years. Limbu, Bengali and Lepcha have also migrated to the region by crossing Mechi River. Apart from this, the Uraon, the Nageshia and the Munda were brought from the Chotanagpur Plateau area by the British. These people were brought to work as laborers in the tea gardens and presently constitute a major part of the population of the region. 

Featuring a combined culture of numerous tribes, Durga Puja, Kali Puja, Teesta Burir Puja, Manosha Puja along with fairs and stage dramas are the prime attractions of the destination. Chor Chunni and Dham Gaan are the popular folk arts of the region depicting the rise and fall of various mythological characters. Apart from Gorumara National Park, some of the popular attractions of the destination are Rovers Point and Rupam Valley.

• By Air — The nearest airport to Lataguri is the Bagdogra Airport. After reaching Bagdogra, you need to hire a car to reach Lataguri.

Where to Eat

• Number of restaurants are limited in Lataguri. However, the hotels generally have adjacent restaurants which are more or less clean, hygienic and well equipped. They serve Bengali cuisine like Chicken Curry, Egg Curry, Rice, Dal, Finger Chips etc. In the mornings, the nearby villages put up weekly markets where you can get fresh vegetables. If you wish to buy, the hotel cook can prepare curries according to your choices and tastes.
• Foreign liquor shops are available although very few in number.

The place is not for the shopaholics and there is nothing you can buy from here.

Walking is the best way to explore Lataguri. Although it is not safe to walk through the lanes after sundown as there are chances of wild animals coming out. Trips to the forests are generally organized by the Forest Department of West Bengal and they allow  vehicles for safari.

Gorumara National Park

Gorumara is famous as the home to the Asiatic one-horned rhinos. Buxa Tiger Reserve

Buxa Tiger Reserve is a 2 hours’ drive from Lataguri. As the name suggests, it is a tiger reserve which also houses other wild animals like the elephants, cheetah, sambar, leopards, chital deer, bison and many more. Bordering Bhutan and Assam , this is the country’s 15th tiger reserve and the forest which constitutes the reserve is alluvial floodplains and is the largest in Dooars . The landscape is truly breathtaking and a visit to the tiger reserve can a full day out from Lataguri but is completely worth it. Soak in the warmth and the gorgeous surroundings and come back rejuvenated.

Rovers Point

This is another interesting site close to Buxa Tiger Reserve. It is popularly known as the land of rare birds. Rovers Point is located on a hilltop which gives the tourists a fascinating aerial view of the surrounding forests that are spread out across acres. It gives a bird’s eye view of Buxa Reserve. A must-visit destination for bird lovers and bird photographers; Rovers Point is frequented by both to sight rare birds and their activities. This fort is located on top of Buxa Hill. It is believed to have provided shelter to refugee monks, who, during the Tibetan crisis following the Chinese invasion had escaped to India . This fort is also believed to have been the primary bone of contention between the Cooch Kings and the king of Bhutan but was later captured by the British in the 18th century. The fort which was originally made of bamboo was converted into a stone structure by the British. Revolutionaries were imprisoned in this fort during the British rule in India.

Murti River

This place epitomizes peace and tranquillity. The quiet surroundings are intoxicating and beyond peaceful. The Murti River which flows down from the Kalimpong Hills lies between the Chapmari Wildlife Sanctuary and Gorumara National park. Surrounded by thick forests on all sides, the sparkling waters of the rivers, the complete silence pierced by the chirping of birds or call of the animals presents nature at its very best. Lataguri : The Gem of Dooars – A Complete Travel Guide

From my childhood, I have been to Lataguri unaccountable times and still, have the same excitement whenever I visit Lataguri.

Lataguri is a small town of Dooars. Dooars is famous for 3 T’s – Tourism, Tea, and Timber. Lataguri is a testimony of the said aphorism. The village is on the fringes of Gorumara National Park . Lataguri made its mark as a prominent tourist destination of Dooars in the last decade. Remnants of wooden houses of Dooars can be found in Lataguri. The place is known for its wooden handicrafts. There are shops along the NH, with beautiful display of wooden artefacts’. Lush green tea estates like Borodighi, Batabari, Neora Nody, Aibhell, and Chulsa adds to the beauty of the place. Hilly streams like Mal Nody, Neora Nody, and Murti Nody menders through the outskirts of Lataguri.

In case you don’t know:

Gorumara National Park is a prime national park of Dooars. Jaldhaka a tributary of Brahmaputra flows adjacent to the National Park. Ministry of Environment and Forest has declared Gorumara as the best among the protected areas in India for the year 2009. Gorumara was declared a reserve forest in 1895. In 1949 it was given a status of a wildlife sanctuary. Later on, Gorumara was declared as National Park in 1994. Gorumara National Park is spread over an area of approx 80 sq km. Gorumara has mixed vegetation of forest and grassland. It is one of the last refuges of One Horned Indian Rhino.

Wildlife at Gorumara National Park:

Jungle of Gorumara is the home of Leopards, Elephants, Gaurs(Indian Bison), Deers, Wild Boars. Indian One Horned Rhinoceros has found solace in the grasslands of Gorumara. In the recently conducted rhino census in the month of February 2019, total rhino count for Gorumara comes to 52 – which is an all-time high figure.

Jungle Safari Experience:

On 19th April 2019, I along with family headed for Lataguri, to take a break from mundane lifestyle. We opted for evening safari and queued up at the ticket booking counter at 2.30 pm. The counter opens at 3.00 pm. In each shift, 15 safari vehicles are issued permit to drive into the park. Jungle safari costs Rs 1650/- for a group of six.

The ticket was issued at 3.00 pm but we decided to start at 4.00 pm. We deliberately started late for a couple of reasons – a) Entry of vehicles in a queue reduces animal sighting chances and also minimizes photographic opportunities in-case you are not in the first vehicle. b) Animals are active during the dusk time, as we in the month of April, with long daylight; we waited for the ideal time.

After checking of permits by the forest guard, we entered the park. Early showers in Dooars this year has rendered the forest absolutely green. It seems that the entire forest has shed the old dress and put on a new one. The safari trail goes through two forest villages – “Kalamati” and “Budhuram”. Just before entering Kalamati Beat, was a Barking Deer busy grazing, disturbed by our unwanted presence got vanished within seconds into the deep forest.

We were scanning the forest as the safari vehicle traversed along the narrow roads through the dense canopy. Nothing much was happening except silence of the forest was interrupted by the cacophony of peacock calls.

We took the road that goes to “Neora Jungle Camp” – a Govt. lodge located deep inside the forest. On the vicinity of Neora Jungle Camp, there is a small patch of grassland and on the back side of the lodge is Neora River. The area is frequented by Peafowls. We saw a Hornbill perched at a tree top, took few photographs, and drove towards the “Kalakhawa Watchtower”. There is water-body in front of the watchtower, where animals come to drink water as forest bound streams dry up during summer.

As we were returning from Kalakhawa Watchtower, our vehicle stopped with a sudden jerk. A male Gaur(Indian Bison) was standing tall inside the forest. We decided to stop there for a while. Our guide informed other vehicles and they rushed to the spot. Our patience proved to be fruitful; there was actually an entire herd, which gradually came out, once they got accustomed to our presence.

With our soul fully satisfied our safari ended on a beautiful note.

Accommodation:

Best accommodation option available at Lataguri is – Neora Jungle Camp. It’s a Govt. property located deep inside the jungle. There are four double bed non-ac cottages. Rooms can be booked online from the website – www.wbsfda.org There are ample resorts at Lataguri starting from budget to super deluxe category. But only a few are there which are in the vicinity of the jungle and has a view of the jungle from the room or balcony. Accommodation options are also available at Murti.

Railhead – Nearest railhead New Mal. From New Mal it’s about ½ hr drive. Alternatively, from Bagdogra Airport its about 2 hrs drive.

How to Reach

The nearest airport is the Bagdogra Domestic Airport under Indian Air Force. This airport connects all the airports all over india. The distance between Bagdogra and Siliguri is 13 km. After arriving at airport, you can hire a cab or you can travel with public transport to reach siliguri.

Nearest railway station is New Maynaguri railway station, New Mal Jn & Chalsa. From the given stations, New Malbazar Junction is the important one apart from New Jalpaiguri and Siliguri Railway Station in this area. You can change train from New Jalpaiguri or can follow the road journey from New Jalpaiguri to the park or Siliguri to the park.

Lataguri is well connected by NH-31 road with Darjeeling, Siliguri, Bhutan and other towns of North Bengal. North Bengal State Transport Corporation Buses, Bhutan Govt. Mini Buses and Private Buses are available from Siliguri to Lataguri. Journey time from Siliguri is about 1:30 hours.

Lataguri experiences high humidity during the summers and you may feel uncomfortable. The hot and humid climate of Lataguri starts from the month of March and extends till the end of June.
