When it comes to packing for a trip, my whole goal is light. Lighter spirits, sure, but also a light bag. No one likes schlepping through the airport with a ton of suitcases, and as a carry-on-only gal , I want everything to fit nice and snug without having to sit on the suitcase to get it to zip closed. This means not only packing a minimalist wardrobe that makes sense for the destination, but also ensuring that everything in my makeup bag works overtime — no multiples, bulky packaging, or otherwise impractical items make the cut. 

That's why I’m obsessed with the Tower 28 SunnyDays SPF 30 Tinted Sunscreen Foundation , a two-in-one foundation that offers 100 percent mineral SPF 30 protection. As someone who never misses a sunscreen application (and has gotten to try several formulas by being a beauty writer), this product saves time and does double duty by evening out my skin tone while also protecting from the sun, no matter the season. I don’t even need concealer with it — though if you prefer a heavier coverage during the day, you might opt for one as well. The best part, however, is that you don’t need a brush or a sponge to apply; your clean hands will work just fine, which saves even more bag space.

I often find it difficult to snag a foundation shade that matches my olive tone with neutral-to-warm undertones, and this product tends to blend evenly if you’re between shades, which is a godsend for those who easily tan like me.

Why it’s great for sensitive skin

What does it mean to be sensitive skin-friendly, you ask? It means being extra choosy about ingredients. Tower 28 has a hefty no-no list of ingredients that you won’t find in any of its products—including but not limited to preservatives, phthalates, nanoparticles, fragrance (synthetic and natural), essential oils, talc, mineral oil, petrolatum, and so much more.

Suffice it to say that if it’s known to make your skin angry, it won’t be in a Tower 28 product. But that’s not all, the brand swears by the National Eczema Association’s ‘ no-no list ’ too! Which is why it's the only beauty brand to earn the association’s seal of acceptance on select products—impressive, I know. My honest thoughts on Tower 28 products

The SOS Daily Rescue Facial Spray— derms love it , 500+ Sephora shoppers love it, and now I do, too. The calming face mist’s key ingredient, hypochlorous acid (which is made naturally by your skin, BTW), has anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties—thus banishing blemish-causing bacteria, while soothing skin redness and irritation. It also smells like pool water, and I kind of love that. Whenever I’m dealing with gnarly breakouts, a compromised skin barrier, or am just feeling a bit sensi, the SOS Spray is what I’ll be reaching for first. It’s already semi-affordable by today’s standards, but it’s worth investing in the jumbo refill bottle ($68)—it’s that good.

A riff on the brand’s cult-classic facial spray, the SOS Intensive Serum is essentially hypochlorous acid in serum form. It packs all of the skin-calming and purifying benefits of the SOS mist, in a lightweight, watery gel texture. I apply 2-3 pumps all over my face after misting, and my skin chills out immediately. By morning, my skin is pretty much reset—blemishes are visibly less angry, signs of irritation are quelled and I’m a happy camper. What’s more, makeup artists swear by the Rescue Serum to prep the skin before applying makeup, and judging by the immediately glassy look it gives my skin, I understand why.

If you love a dewy-yet-pigmented blush look, you’ll love the Beach Please Luminous Tinted Balms. The super emollient balms come in a range of summer-ready shades (I’m wearing “Office Hours,” a sun-kissed mauve, in the above photo) and couldn’t be more user-friendly. Tap them in with your fingers or stipple them on with a brush, you’ll get a fresh-faced, radiant flush without fail every time. You can even use the balms on your lips and lids for a monochrome look. The balms are made with skin-nourishing ingredients, like green tea extract, aloe vera and shea butter—and in true Tower 28 fashion, they’re free of anything that could irritate sensitive skin or clog your pores. Pretty pigment and blendability aside, though, I found these to be a tad too dewy for my liking—but anyone with dry skin is sure to love them.

If you’re going to try anything from Tower 28—make it the MakeWaves Mascara. This mascara gives you a little bit of everything: it lengthens, volumizes and gives my stick straight lashes a bit of curling help thanks to its curved synthetic brush. A trio of flexible bands makes it easy to wriggle through my lashes, and ensures every last one is seamlessly coated. And if you want a bolder look, MakeWaves’s buildable formula can be layered without clumpiness. The cherry on top? The tubing formula is easy to remove (all you need is warm water and light massaging), and seriously budge-proof. I can even apply it to my lower lashes without racoon eyes!

Sunny Days is a tinted mineral sunscreen, but unlike others on the market, Tower 28’s buildable, light-to- medium coverage is better than foundation— and it’s safe for sensitive skin (*chefs kiss*). The lightweight formula covers up redness and evens out my skin tone while still letting my skin breathe. What you get is a natural, satiny finish, that’s devoid of cakey-ness. And while I usually skip makeup when my skin is in the middle of a breakout, Sunny Days is the one of the few I can reach for worry-free thanks to trusty skin-soothers like aloe vera and prickly pear.

Take the glassy shine of a lip gloss, add the moisturizing feel of a lip balm and subtract the stickiness, you’ve got the Shine On Lip Jelly. These cushiony, smoothing glosses defy all logic in my book—giving me a sheer wash of color (there are also clear and ‘milky’ shade options), juicy shine, while leaving my lips feeling pillowy soft and hydrated for hours. And instead of “glossing” over dry, chapped lips, the Shine On Lip Jelly gets to work on solving dryness with an ultra-nourishing blend of oils (like apricot, castor, avocado, raspberry oils—the works!). Even more incredible, they’re under $20! So there’s no going wrong.

For a radiant, tanned look without the skin damage, Tower 28’s Bronzino is for you. It has a similarly emollient, balmy consistency as the brand’s Beach Please blushes, in five gloriously bronze, shimmery shades. While I was admittedly skeptical about the shimmer at first, it’s hardly noticeable on the skin, and gives the bronzer a beautiful, glowy (but not glittery) finish. I use “West Coast,” a warm medium bronze shade that’s just as gorgeous on the eyes as it is on your face. I buff it out around my cheekbones, across my nose and lightly dust it on my forehead and temples for an easy sun-kissed look. If you can get past the shimmer (and use a separate contour if that’s what you’re used to), Bronzino is totally worth picking up— especially if you have drier skin.

I kind of love that slightly sweaty dew you get after a few hours in the sun—and Tower 28’s SuperDew is that in balm form. There’s absolutely zero color or shimmer in it, just the most natural-looking shine. And just a touch is all you need for a “glass-skin” effect. In keeping with the rest of the Tower 28 lineup, SuperDew has super great ingredients—we’re talking skin-soothing chamomile, antioxidant green tea and nourishing shea butter—so it essentially takes care of dryness while imparting a luminous glow. If you’re not a glitter gal but still want to highlight, pick this up ASAP. You can even use it on your eyelids for a glossy look!

One of the brand’s more recent launches, the Sculptino is the secret to achieving a chiseled, contoured look with barely any effort. It’s like Bronzino’s matte, shimmer-free sister. It comes in four shades that are somehow neutral and slightly warm at the same time—and it applies like a dream. The silky soft formula can be applied with a brush or your fingers, and because the formula is sheer it’s nearly impossible to mess up. When I’m in a hurry, I’ll dip my fingers into the compact and sweep Sculptino on my usual contour points (hollows of the cheekbones, temples and jawline) before haphazardly blending it out with my fingertips. The result? A sculpted and defined complexion in seconds. It’s a YES from me.

One thing about me is I can’t say no to a tinted lip balm, and the JuiceBalms are no exception. These super smooth balms give your lips a punch of pigment and juicy shine, and promise to leave your pout more hydrated than before. My only gripe is that they’re not all that moisturizing. The formula, while pigmented, is too thin and slippy to give my dry lips any meaningful hydration. That being said, the popsicle-like pigment and dewy shine couldn’t be more perfect for summer. So while these aren’t my first choice when it comes to a moisturizing lip balm, the wearable shades make them worth keeping in my makeup bag.

If it wasn’t already clear that Tower 28 has fully mastered multipurpose products, this last product ought to do the trick. The OneLiner Multi-Liner is an endlessly versatile, matte pencil that can be used on the eyes, lips and face to create a bounty of different looks—it’s the only makeup pencil you’ll ever need. I have the shades “Fill Me In” (a rosy nude) and “Draw Me” (a chocolatey brown) and I use them both all the time. “Fill Me In” is my lip liner of choice—though scribbling it onto your cheeks as blush is a delightful experience I’d highly recommend you try—and “Draw Me” is my go-to eyeliner, smudged out along my lashline. Both glide smoothly without skipping or dragging, and they stick around throughout the day. And for only $15 bucks? They’re so worth a try.

I’m calling it: the SOS Daily Recovery Cream is my new holy grail moisturizer, and I’d venture to guess that it’ll be yours too. The soft, cushiony cream is basic in the best way, and gives my skin exactly what it needs and none of the fluff (see: fragrance and potentially-irritating active ingredients). Instead, it contains 4 types of hyaluronic acid for mega-hydration, barrier-strengthening ceramides and skin-soothing allantoin, which calm and nourish my oily/combination skin without looking or feeling greasy. Plus, the soothing, no-frills formula is perfect for nights when I’m using retinol (when my skin feels especially sensi), and when I’m experiencing a breakout (it seems to banish redness overnight). I love it so much, I wish it came in a bigger tube—BTW, my inner germaphobe loves that it comes in a tube instead of a jar. Tower28, please make a jumbo size ASAP!

Tower 28's SOS Intensive Rescue Serum Makes My Red, Sensitive Skin Calmer Than Ever

After five years of being a self-described professional beauty product tester, my skin has developed a pretty moderate case of rosacea , a skin condition that comes with symptoms like redness and sensitivity . Since my skin isn't as tolerant to active ingredients as it once was, my job has gotten a tad tougher. What products can I actually try without upsetting my skin in the process? Thankfully, there's a new redness reducer on the block that my skin gladly accepts: Tower 28's SOS (Save. Our. Skin.) Intensive Rescue Serum .

Does this serum's name sound familiar? That's because its formula is based on one of the brand's most beloved products, the SOS Daily Rescue Facial Spray, which is one of our favorite setting sprays and midday refreshers . Like its predecessor, the SOS Intensive Rescue Serum utilizes anti-inflammatory saltwater to calm reactive skin and reduce redness. 

However, in comparison to the facial spray, the serum contains a higher concentration of antibacterial hypochlorous acid. According to Tracy Evans, MD , board-certified dermatologist and medical director of Pacific Skin and Cosmetic Dermatology in San Francisco, this skin-care ingredient is commonly used in dermatologists' offices as a disinfectant for skin before injectable and surgical procedures. "It is safe, gentle, and can be used even near the eyes," she says.

Once Dr. Evans gave my easily-irritated skin the green light to test out this serum, I decided to give it a shot. After washing my face at night with the Sunday Riley Ceramic Slip Clay Cleanser , I swipe one pump of the serum on my left cheek, the reddest part of my face. This serum doesn't feel like anything I've ever tried before — it was cool to the touch and felt nearly identical to water. It felt as if I just dramatically splashed my face à la '90s skin-care commercials. The serum also dries down immediately, leaving no greasy feel or slippery finish behind.

Due to its lightweight, water-like texture, I needed about five pumps to cover my entire face, which is a tad more than goopier serums require. But I didn't mind using more product than usual, because the redness-reducing results were worth the extra pumps. Overnight my skin looked more even in tone, and the red patch on my left cheek looked noticeably calmer than usual. Since this formula doesn't contain harsher active ingredients, you can incorporate it into your morning routine, too, which is precisely what I've been doing (and absolutely recommend).

If Donald Trump wins the White House , don’t expect Melania Trump to be on full-time first lady duty, a source tells Page Six.

A Trumpworld insider says that, “Melania has made a deal with her husband that if he wins the presidency she will not have to be on first lady duty 24/7.”

The development comes as it’s speculated that their son, Barron Trump, will attend New York University in the fall.

Says our insider of Melania: “She’s a hands-on mother, and is already planning to spend part of every month — and potentially every week — in NYC,” should Barron, 18, attend NYU.

The insider added that Barron would need additional adjustment to college life if his dad is the president.

“Barron has never been completely on his own before — and with the added stress of him being both a freshman in college and potentially the son of a president in a predominantly Democratic city, [Melania] wants to be close… The added attention he’ll get if his father is president worries Melania who is also concerned about reaction at his school over Barron’s ever-present Secret Service [detail].”

The source familiar with the Trump family said that, “Melania is an extremely protective mother and even pushed back on the idea that Barron would serve as a Republican delegate to the [Republican National Convention] from Florida.”

In May, Melania’s office announced that Barron was regretfully declining the offer from the Florida Republican Party to be a delegate for the state as he had prior commitments.

“While Barron is honored to have been chosen as a delegate by the Florida Republican Party, he regretfully declines to participate due to prior commitments,” the statement said.

In 2017, Melania delayed moving into the White House with Barron for five months, so he could  could finish the school year uninterrupted in NYC.

“She does not want a non-stop schedule of events in the White House, and makes the point she can be both a hands-on mother and First Lady at the same time.”

The source adds that, “Donald is close to Barron, but isn’t going to tossing footballs with him when he’s the president and the head of the free world. Donald has already agreed to this, and feels that mothers and parents across the country will understand Melania’s devotion to their son.”

The Alternative to Huge Cruises? 3 Masts, 28 Sails and Wind Power.

We checked out the 136-passenger Sea Cloud Spirit on a Mediterranean cruise. In this era of gargantuan ships, its elegant clipper design, wooden decks and relatively small size stands out.

From the bridge of the three-masted windjammer, the Sea Cloud Spirit , the captain called out the words we’d all been waiting for.

“Let’s set the sails!” he cried, after turning off the engines, while maneuvering to maintain an optimum angle for his 18 deckhands to climb into the shrouds and unfurl the ship’s 44,132 square feet of sails by hand.

Like acrobats, the crew scurried up the masts to the upper topgallant sails that rose nearly 200 feet above us. The ship’s captain, Vukota Stojanovic, later insisted that none of it was for show. “Whenever there is an opportunity to sail, we sail,” he said.

For the next hour, the crew hauled the ropes until the 28 sails were billowing in the wind, propelling the 452-foot-long ship — the world’s largest passenger sailing vessel on which the sails are raised by hand — toward its first port of call, Portofino, Italy.

At a time when cruise lines are packing their ever-more-gargantuan ships with water parks and basketball courts, the 136-passenger Sea Cloud Spirit, with its old-fashioned clipper design and wooden decks, stands out. It is the newest ship from the Hamburg-based Sea Cloud Cruises , and while it is the company’s biggest, Sea Cloud said it wanted to leave space for passengers to connect to the surrounding elements.

“Wherever you are on the ship, it feels like you are sitting on the water,” said Amelia Dominick, 71, a retired real estate agent from Cologne, Germany, who was on her third cruise onboard the Sea Cloud Spirit.

I had arrived for a four-night “taster sailing” from Nice, France, to the Ligurian region of Italy, designed to entice passengers to sign up for a longer cruise. Here’s what I found.

The ship and cabins

The Spirit has many comforts and luxuries, including a fitness center, library, hair salon and a spa with a Finnish sauna that overlooks the sea. The deck layouts are spacious, with nooks carved out for privacy and relaxation.

Sixty-nine spacious cabins have windows that open onto the sea. My room, a junior suite on the third deck, had two large arched windows, mahogany tables, a balcony and a comfortable couch and armchair. The marble bathroom was lavish, with a gold-plated sink and large jetted bathtub.

The elegant interior design is inspired by the original Sea Cloud, built in 1931 for Marjorie Merriweather Post, the American heiress of the General Foods Corporation, with glossy wooden panels and gold trimmings. The Sea Cloud was the largest private sailing yacht in the world before Post handed it over to the U.S. Navy for use as a weather-reporting vessel during World War II. The four-mast, 64-passenger ship has since been restored to its former glory and will sail across the Aegean and Adriatic this summer.

The experience felt authentic — even before the sails were set — with a detailed safety drill. On most cruises, the drill entails a safety video and signing in at an assembly point. But here, passengers put on their life jackets and walked through emergency scenarios that included rationing food supplies and fishing from the lifeboat.

Each day, the sails were set, even during heavy rain and wind speeds over 30 knots. Guests wanting to participate in the rigging are usually invited to do so, but the weather conditions made it too risky for this sailing.

“It was amazing to watch the work go into putting the sails up and down and to experience the wind power pulling the ship so fast without the engines,” said Malte Rahnenfuehrer, a 50-year-old psychologist from Zurich, who was traveling with his partner and two children.

The captain

It is rare for cruise passengers to see the ship’s captain after the initial welcome drinks or gala dinner. But Capt. Vukota Stojanovic was omnipresent throughout the cruise, from setting sails to lifeguarding to mingling with guests.

Originally from Montenegro, Captain Stojanovic piloted container ships for years. When he was asked to consider helming the original Sea Cloud nearly 10 years ago, he hesitated because he had no experience sailing. Even after he learned the ropes — and there are 340 ropes (known as running rigging) on the vessel — he was unsure. “I grew to love the sailings, the boats, the crew the lifestyle, but I still felt I belonged on container ships,” he said. “It would be a big adjustment, especially because I would have to shave every day,” he joked.

Eventually, he accepted the opportunity and worked tirelessly to learn how to sail and operate the ship. Today, he keeps an “open bridge” policy, allowing passengers to visit the control room, even when he is wrestling with the wind.

“The crew and the passengers are all part of the experience, and I like to meet people and receive their feedback,” Captain Stojanovic said.

Environment

Sea Cloud Cruises aspires to take a “gentle” approach, using wind power to drive its ships wherever possible, even if that means changing course for optimal weather conditions. When sailing is not possible, the Spirit has two diesel-electric engines that run on low-sulfur marine diesel fuel. The company is also working with ports that have shore power capabilities to plug into the local electric power.

Onboard, there is an emphasis on reusable bottles and paper straws, and crew members separate solid waste to be compacted and removed when in port.

Excursions and Activities

We made stops in Portofino, San Remo, Italy, and St.-Tropez, France, anchoring offshore and getting to land by tender — a contrast to the big cruise ships with their loud horns and thick plumes of exhaust spewing from their funnels.

For passengers wanting to take a dip (there is no pool), the crew marked an area in the water with floats and an inflatable slide. The water was frigid, but many passengers took the plunge from the swimming deck. Guests could also take “Zodiac Safaris” around the ship to get views of the vessel from the water.

Excursions ranged from food and wine tours to e-biking and beach trips. In Portofino, passengers were free to explore the sights independently, including the Castello Brown Fortress and the lighthouse on Punta del Capo rock. There was ample time to eat meals on shore as the ship did not depart until 11 p.m. Over the summer, the Sea Cloud Spirit will sail to Spain, Portugal, France and the Azores, among other destinations. On Nov. 11, she will depart for St. Maarten in the Caribbean for the winter.

Wherever the vessel goes, said Mirell Reyes, president of Sea Cloud Cruise for North America, the company tries to “stay away from the crowds and ports where big cruise ships spit out 6,000 passengers.”

Summer prices, which include food and beverages, range from $3,995 for a four-night sailing in a superior cabin to $9,420 for a veranda suite. Seven-night sailings cost between $6,995 and $16,495.
