How to get from Manila to Cebu (Flight / Ferry)

The Manila – Cebu route is the most popular one in all of the Philippines. There are thousands of people traveling between these two cities every day, and that doesn’t only mean there are plenty of departure times you can choose from, but also very fair prices since the different companies compete for all the customers.

The most important thing right away:

There are 2 ways to get from Manila to Cebu (or vice versa) – by flight or by ferry.

I already have done both of them, and in this quick guide I will give you an overview of both travel options, information on the prices and duration, links to the companies, tips on what to look out for, my own pictures and a video, as well as an overview map.

Manila to Cebu by Flight

Manila to Cebu

Cebu Pacific Air is the most popular choice among most travelers. It’s the low cost carrier of the Philippines that almost always has the cheapest rates – I just checked the price for a one way ticket for next Wednesday, it’s just 1,530 Pesos including all taxes and fees. They currently have 11 (!) daily departures on this most popular route of the country.

  • The flight time from Manila to Cebu is 1 hour and 15 minutes .

Another popular choice is Air Asia , which is also a low cost carrier with similar rates (though I found them to be a couple of hundred Pesos more expensive in 90% of the cases, so I’ve never flown with them so far in the Philippines).

And the third main carrier on the Manila to Cebu route is Philippine Airlines – the national airline of the Philippines. Unlike with the low cost carriers, you will get free drinks and food on board as well as more legroom, but the tickets are more expensive: It’s 2,375 Pesos for the cheapest departure time next Wednesday.

Note: Take your taxi to the airport about 3 hours before your departure time – no matter whether in Manila or Cebu, because the traffic can be horrible.

And if you should still arrive at the airport quite early, you will probably have something nice to look at.

Girl at Manila Airport

As always with flights here in the Philippines, the views out of the window over all these small and big islands are spectacular.

Here is Cebu from above, just 5 minutes before landing:

Ready for landing at Mactan-Cebu International Airport:

How to get from Cebu Airport to Downtown?

The airport in Cebu is located on a small island called Mactan, which is connected with a bridge to mainland Cebu. It’s about 14.5km from the airport to Mango Square in downtown Cebu.

I have decided to write a separate post on this topic:

  • See also: From Cebu Airport to City Center (Bus / Taxi)

Manila to Cebu by Ferry

Ferry from Manila to Cebu

Only few people decide to take the ferry from Manila to Cebu, and that’s the main reason for it:

  • The travel time from Manila to Cebu by ferry is 22 hours .

Yes, that’s right: It’s an overnight ferry, means you will have to sleep on the boat.

I can tell you that it can still be worth it and quite an experience, but only if you don’t plan other ferry trips in the Philippines, like from Cebu to Bohol or from Caticlan to Boracay .

You can check the departure times of the ferries and prebook your ticket (even though that’s not really necessary, except on national holidays when many boats are fully booked) on the website 2 Go Travel . Note how they call their vessels like “St Pope John Paul II” or “St Leo the Great”.

The price for a one way ferry ticket from Manila to Cebu City is about 1,000 Pesos for Tourist Class , 1,500 Pesos for Cabin for 4 and 3,800 Pesos for a Suiteroom for 2 .

Note: There are only 1-2 daily departures – check them on the website.

This is how the berths in the Tourist Class look like:

Manila Ferry Berths

One of the great things about taking the ferry in the Philippines, apart from getting a feel for how many islands there really are, are the nice surprises when you suddenly spot a whale or a dolphin:

Philippines Dolphin

And it’s amazing how crystal clear and clean the water is:

Philippines Ocean Water

Sunset from the boat:

Philippines Sunset

The ferries leave from Pier 4 in Manila and arrive at  Pier 1 in Cebu City the following day. And if you want to travel from Cebu back to Manila, it’s the same locations, prices and schedules.

I have marked all locations on the map below:

Manila to Cebu

Manila to Cebu

Best options, other options, manila to cebu schedule, how to get from manila to cebu.

There are two main ways to get to Cebu City from Manila.

You can either fly from Ninoy Aquino International Airport to Mactan-Cebu International Airport or go by sea.

Technically it is possible to get to Cebu from Manila via a combination of RORO buses and ferries, too, though the journey will be a long and not the most comfortable one.

How far is Cebu from Manila?

The air distance between Manila and Cebu is approximately 570 km.

The sea distance between the Port of Manila and the Port of Cebu is roughly 770 km.

The overland distance via Pan Philippine Hwy/AH 26 or via Western Nautical Hwy is slightly under 900 km.

How long does it take to get from Manila to Cebu?

Flying normally takes between 1 hour 15 minutes and one and a half hour.

The sea voyage is likely to rob you off your whole day of your life, and anyway will not take less than 22 hours.

Similarly, travelling by a combination of land transport and ferries, be ready to spend 30 hours and more.

What means of transport to choose?

Flying is definitely the fastest and the most convenient way to get to Cebu from Manila.

Taking a boat is slow and not necessarily cheap yet it is quite a picturesque way to get to Cebu as you will be sailing past several islands on your way from Luzon to Cebu.

Travelling by bus & ferry is exhausting though may prove slightly cheaper than flying or travelling by boat.

How much does it cost to get from Manila to Cebu?

The airfare for Manila-Cebu route typically ranges between PHP2,500 and PHP9,000.

The sea travel can cost anywhere between PHP2,200 and PHP7,000 depending on the type of the cabin you choose.

A combination ticket for bus and ferry should cost within PHP2,500–PHP5,000 range.

How to get from Manila to Cebu by ferry

There are direct ferries between port of Manila and port of Cebu operated by 2GO vessels. Crossing the ocean is not for the faint-hearted as the sea can be rough.

Though technically possible, travelling from Manila to Cebu by bus and ferry is time consuming, exhausting and not that cheap hence not recommended. Yet you can consider it – this is the plan of how it works.

Manila–Cebu is one of the most popular routes in the Philippines served by over two dozens of daily flights.

MANILA TO CEBU via 2GO Travel • What to Expect, How to Board Ferry

MANILA TO CEBU via 2GO Travel • What to Expect, How to Board Ferry

By continuing to read this article, you agree to double check with the authorities or other concerned entities for the latest updates.

These days, if anyone brings up traveling from Manila to Cebu, our minds take us to the skies. I know this because when I mentioned to my family and friends that I was Cebu-bound, they assumed without question that I would be checking in at an airport. But they were wrong. Because this time around, I’m taking my love for travel to the seas!

Cebu is one of the most popular destinations in the country. While many would instinctively search for flights a prospect of a Cebu trip, there are still a lot out there who prefer traveling by sea. Yes, the travel time is much longer but it comes with several perks, too. First, year-round fares are often cheaper. Second, baggage allowance is waaaay larger. Third, if you book a modern ship, it usually comes with amenities to help you burn those hours.

I recently got to experience traveling from Manila to Cebu on board MV 2GO Maligaya , one of 2GO Travel’s newest fleet members. In this article, we’ll share with you how to sail to Cebu with 2GO Travel!

Cebu–Cordova Link Expressway

What was it like to sail with 2GO? How was the experience?

Personally, I’ve never experienced traveling on a ship prior this ship. A few people I know have never tried or even considered traveling this way because they were afraid of the thought of being in the open sea and feeling huge waves while on board. I myself isn’t scared of waves and I don’t get sea sick easily. But if you’re one of those people, I don’t think you should worry much about it. I didn’t really feel the vessel move for the most part. It felt like I was in a hotel on land.

What I was concerned about was the long travel time and the possibility of being bored with nothing to do on the ship. The journey from Manila to Cebu took us almost 24 hours, but surprisingly and thankfully, I didn’t get bored at any point. Activities and amenities on board would keep you occupied for much of the journey and it could make you feel like it’s already a part of your vacation.

Top 5 airlines serving from manila to cebu city.

The biz class to sh doesn’t even have. Tv screen , seats uncomfortable, food terrible and bathroom dirty

Upgrade their seats. They’ve got 20-year-old business class seats in their 777s. The food choices. On the way to Manila and the way back I thought we’re lousy compared to other carriers. The staff was fantastic and very happy.

Continual rescheduling of flights, inflight entertainment system did not work, staff not pleasant to interact with.

Check-in was tedious. They could just have used the electronic boarding passes and counter checked the passengers’ names in their manifest. What’s the use of the early checkin if we still have to queue at the only 1 functioning checkin counter!

So far pal express is much better than Cebu pacific in terms of customers service and in flight crew. And on time departure and arrival . Especially if you're taking airbus 320 plane . But the small aircraft like bombardier . It usually delayed .

We did booked shorter layovers but flights changed and layovers are too long good thing Philippine Airlines give us a hotel in manila but here Vancouver to Calgary too long layovers and there is enough sets to wait closer to air canada and they will open 4am.we were here 1 am .our flights schedule for air canada 8:10am.we paid expensive flights but not happy of lay over Vancouver to Calgary.

Biz class is way below what other airlines offer. The food was mediocre at best. A WiFi was intermittent and movies were dated. Honestly the best part of the trip was that the Mabuhay lounge in SFO was closed and they gave us pass to Air France lounge. My advise, fill up there before boarding plane.

Not a pleasant experience from the start of booking first flight all the way through to the actually flight. Only saving grace is the food.

No power on an 11 hour flight? What a joke. Crew did not come by enough to get trash or offer water.

Checking in was okay but boarding a little bit slow

i liked that the flight crew noticed my discomfort with the small leg space (I'm 6'2") and offered the emergency row. The fight attendants were very friendly, a definite strength with Cebu Pacific. I didn't like the leg space in my original seating.

The seats are too cramped, there is barely enough room to shift weight. This could be easy to endure in a one-hour flight, but not more than that. The crew did not clean up shortly after meals. The tray table remained open because of the meal and ate up what is left of the little seating space. The crew were just idling by for 45 minutes before they collected the trash. The airline did not inspect carry-on luggage. Most of the passengers brought too many bags, too large and/or over the weight limit. This undermines safety and discourages those who pay extra for checked bags just to comply with the airline regulations. If the airline is not inspecting carry-on luggage, why should I pay more just to check in some bags?

Terrible, I will never ever ever attempt to fly on Cebu Pacific. I understand that it’s a cheap flight option but they take cheap experience to the next level.

The front desk and early check in was fantastic and the flight did not have any turbulence

better handling of the checked in luggage. they destroyed mine

Should’ve not separated those who checked-in online and those who checked-in at the airport

the process of paying for the excess baggage weight, the check in process and the boarding process are subhuman. this is an airline devoid of customer service

Cebu Pac has a habit of changing boarding gates. They do a lot of remote boarding. So just be attentive to the announcements, especially if it's near your boarding time.

It was a low cost flight, so no high expectations. The experience was average.

Crew was very helpful because I used a wheelchair to get around

The flight was delayed by an hour . Traveling with 75 year old father was difficult and then when he asked for water he was asked to purchase :-) . Overall just an ok experience.

Overall service is good, the only thing I would like airasia to improve is there seating. Their seat handles are broken as well as the back rest

Boarding with air asia is excellent via organized lines by zone except when there is only 1 gate agent and no scanner, only by tearing tickets??? Crazy

The flight was supposed to depart at 9:25. It departed at 9:00. Im glad we were early and did not miss it.

They wouldn't even allow us to bring water from the fountain on board the aircraft.

Premium seats should have legroom this one didn't have it. I had 2 free checked bag but I got charged for while it shows on my reservation

Terrible airline! This airline just ruined our family vacation due to a 12 hours delay as a result of their operational issues.

Too many flight delays. Airport terminal serving Boracay needs upgrades.

Over 6 hours delayed.. using philippine air fleet planes are beat up dirty and uncomfortable. Have been flying air asia for over 4 years from Manila to Tokyo and kansai as well as several local flights from Manila to Bacolod and Cebu.. 3 planes were down for maintenance and caused havoc.. need to invest in new fleet or seriously clean and upgrade the existing fleet. Will not be flying anymore until fixed. Several options out there now to choose from as air asia prices have skyrocketed.. no point in using them anymore . Severally upset passenger here. They can’t even manage the queuing of Zones for boarding as it’s a crab fest free for all now. No discipline and let the passengers in line to board just run into any lane possible.. and priority luggage?? Forget it I’ve paid for it for the last 6 flights and never got it first.. air asia has turned into a expensive joke.. use Cebu pacific or zip air now..

We had three flight delays before eventually taking off 3 hours late. Inflight service was very limited, but it was a relatively short flight. Luggage was delivered promptly.

My flight got canceled and I nearly missed my connecting flight to el nido because of this . So I had to get up at 4am to catch a ferry to cebu and travel 7 hours to the airport I am not happy at all

Capturing Cebu City's heritage and modern qualities amid progress

C ebu City — one of the largest cities across the Philippines — is home not just to heritage sites but to modern thriving business districts and infrastructure as well.

Being the oldest city in the country, established in 1565 and with a rich history that predates Spanish colonization, Cebu City has admirably retained a deep connection to its roots. Proof to this are its well-preserved heritage sites, colonial-era architecture, and traditional festivals.

To this day, tourists can still visit Magellan's Cross, Basilica del Santo Niño and Fort San Pedro or join Sinulog Festival, just to name a few historical sites and festivities.

But amid preservation efforts, Cebu City has also embraced modernization. Bustling IT and business process outsourcing (BPO) sectors, upscale shopping malls, and a growing skyline with modern high-rises have occupied the city that continues to have a rich history.

One of the businesses that have successfully captured both the modern and the historical qualities of Cebu City is Seda.

The Philippine brand of hotels owned and operated by Ayala Land Hotels and Resorts has two properties in close proximity to each other in Cebu City's vibrant districts — Seda Ayala Center Cebu and Seda Central Bloc Cebu.

However, general managers Gwen dela Cruz and Ron Manalang were quick to point out that the two properties complement each other with products and services that cater to different clientele.

"The two Sedas are here not to compete but to uplift each other," Seda Ayala Center Cebu General Manager dela Cruz said during a media visit to Cebu.

"It's like Seda Central Bloc Cebu is younger addition to the family with a more modern vibe," general manager Manalang shared in a separate interview.

Seda Ayala Center Cebu offers more laidback and classic services, while Seda Central Bloc Cebu's modern amenities offer efficient services to bleisure — business and leisure — travelers.

Seda Ayala Center CebuReopened in 2018 after an extensive renovation, the 301-room Seda Ayala Center Cebu merges past and present through a seamless transition from its beginnings as a key player in the development of the city's financial district to its rebirth as a modern urban retreat.

The hotel offers convenient routes to key destinations in the city. It is 45 minutes away from the airport and 20 minutes away from the seaport.

Club Rooms and Suites are highly sought-after at Seda Ayala Center Cebu. Guests booked in these rooms have privileged access to the Club Lounge on the 12th floor, where they can enjoy complimentary breakfast, afternoon tea and cocktails, plus complimentary one-hour use of the private meeting room perfect for executive travelers.

Seda Ayala Center Cebu also presents a variety of function spaces ranging from a grand ballroom accommodating up to 300 people to boardrooms for small group meetings.

For dining, Seda Ayala Center Cebu has the in-house all-day dining outlet Misto. Guests can enjoy local delicacies and international classics, like salmon inun-unan, linarang and Cebuano humba.

Meanwhile, the Lobby Bar and Pool Bar offer Happy Hour cocktails and refreshing beverages, completing a culinary journey that caters to every palate.

Seda Central Bloc CebuOpened in 2020, Seda Central Bloc Cebu is a 17-story hotel located in the city's newest business district, Cebu I.T. Park.

The hotel offers access to Ayala Mall Central Bloc from the 5th level, connecting guests to multiple entertainment, retail and dining options. It is also just approximately 40 minutes from the Mactan International and Domestic Airports.

With a unique combination of guest rooms for short stays and serviced apartments with home-like conveniences such as a living and dining area, kitchenette, and washer/dryer, ideal for extended visits, Seda Central Bloc Cebu provides versatile accommodation options to suit every traveler's needs. Options range from studios to three-bedroom apartments.

"We feel that there's a demand in terms of leisure staycation and the corporate market. The serviced rooms have a high demand on family usage because of its functionality. That, combined with our location and topnotch service make us the ideal hotel destination for modern travelers," Manalang proudly noted.

Dining in the hotel is also a culinary adventure.

On the 5th floor, Misto's show kitchen boasts a cutting-edge griller capable of preparing a whole Cebu Lechon, the hotel's signature dish. Crafted by Senior sous chef Crisanto Palang Jr., a renowned lechonero, this special recipe has made the traditional lechon a seasonal favorite, especially during Christmas.

Additionally, Misto offers another Cebu staple dish, Sinuglaw, which is a combination of grilled pork belly and fresh tanigue fillet ceviche.

For a nightcap, Straight Up rooftop bar is the destination to be. Operating from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m., this unique venue serves up a diverse selection of beverages and daily Happy Hour specials, all against the backdrop of the breathtaking Cebu City skyline.

Sustainability initiativesBesides room offerings and services, the two Seda's also take pride in their sustainability efforts that benefit not just their guests but their surrounding community as well.

Seda Central Bloc Cebu's commitment to environmental sustainability is reflected in its cutting-edge 53 KWP (kilowatt peak) solar panel system, utilizing state-of-the-art Japanese technology.

Aptly named "The Green Initiative," this project covers 100 square meters of roof space and aims to significantly reduce the hotel's carbon footprint by offsetting harmful emissions from LPG and generator usage during power outages. By harnessing the power of the sun, Seda Central Bloc Cebu shows its commitment to responsible tourism and sets a new standard for eco-friendly hospitality in Cebu.

"Our goal is to eventually supply power on our guest floors. Right now it's not yet in the grid but it's already saving us P700,000 per year," Manalang detailed.

Seda Ayala Center Cebu, meanwhile, upholds its dedication to environmental sustainability by collaborating with GUUN, a Japanese company located in Consolacion, Cebu.

Together, they transform the hotel's solid waste into eco-friendly fluff fuel, a sustainable substitute for traditional fossil fuels like coal. This initiative marks the hotel as a pioneer in Cebu for implementing such environmentally conscious practices.

The hotel also has a reverse osmosis system that allows them to produce their own purified water. During the super typhoon Odette that devastated the city in 2021, the hotel was able to use this technology to supply clean, drinking water not just to its guests but to its surrounding communities as well.

Additionally, the hotel supports local farmers and fishermen by partnering with local entrepreneurs to showcase home-grown produce like granola, sikwate, dried fish, and special chorizo, allowing guests to savor the finest flavors of Cebu.

In ending, the two properties highlighted their offerings for future visitors.

"Our teams work tirelessly to ensure that every patron feels valued and experiences the highest level of comfort and quality," dela Cruz emphasized.

"Versatile accommodations, memorable culinary experiences, and eco-friendly practices ensure we exceed expectations while contributing to the community's well-being," Manalang finally noted.
