Do I need a UK Visitor Visa from Philippines?

Visitors from the Philippines cannot gain entry to the UK without a valid visa for their trip. For those looking just to visit the UK and stay for a period of less than six months, a standard Visitor Visa will suffice.

A Visitor Visa does specify what activities visa holders can participate in while they’re in the UK. This includes:

Tourism – a standard vacation
Visiting family or friends
Volunteering for a period of up to 30 days with a charity with a UK base or project
Transiting through for onward travel elsewhere – if this is the sole purpose for the visit, a Transit Visa is cheaper
Attending a job interview that has good reason to take place in the UK rather than the Philippines
Studying, taking an exam, or completing academic research
Taking part in a sporting or creative event
Attending for medical appointments or treatments
Attending ‘permitted paid engagements’ – usually for those who are an expert in their field of work and have engagements to perform in the UK on behalf of a Filipino institution or organization.
However, visa holders can’t do any paid work outside of their permitted engagements or use this visa type for successive visits that would result in de facto residence.

It should also be noted that Filipino citizens cannot use this visa category to give notice of or register a marriage or civil partnership. These activities are covered by a specific Marriage Visa designed for these purposes.

Applicants for UK visas must meet several eligibility criteria in order for the British immigration authorities to grant them permission to enter the country. For a Visit Visa from the Philippines, the applicant must:

Hold a Filipino passport that is valid for the duration of their proposed stay
Be able to prove they’ll leave the UK at the end of their visit (demonstrated through the provision of a travel reservation)
Be able to prove they have somewhere suitable to stay in the UK (demonstrated through the provision of travel details and an accommodation reservation)
Be able to prove they have adequate financial resources to support themselves for the duration of their stay (demonstrated through the provision of bank statements or other evidentiary proof).

Further proof may be required when applying for a UK visa if the Filipino national is visiting the UK for medical reasons, to complete a permitted paid engagement, to study or to take part in any professional activities.

The Visitor Visa application must be accompanied with supporting documents to demonstrate the applicant’s eligibility to the British immigration authorities. They reserve the right to request additional documents at any point during the processing period, but as standard, the following must be included:

A valid Filipino passport
Travel reservations or booked travel to and from the UK
An accommodation reservation for the duration of the stay
A breakdown of the estimated total cost of the visit
Bank statements demonstrating enough capital to sustain the applicant during their stay. Applicants should note there is no set minimum financial requirement but immigration authorities will take into account average costs
Your employer’s details and salary details
Details of any criminal, civil or immigration offenses
Your travel history for the last ten years
Details of any partners or family members in the UK.

All documents must be translated if not provided in English or Welsh. Translations must be completed by a verified translator. If you’re unsure of how to ensure this standard, contact Total Law on 0333 305 9375 .

If the relevant immigration authorities request additional documents during the visa processing period, the application is considered paused until they are received from the applicant. This can result in serious delays to the visa application and so applicants are advised to respond in a timely manner.

A Visitor Visa is valid for a stay of up to six months in all cases but where a visa holder is visiting for medical reasons. If the visa applicant is intending to attend private medical appointments or have medical treatment while in the UK, they may apply for the visa to be valid for an extended period of up to 11 months. For a Medical Visitor Visa to be granted for any period of over six months, the applicant will have to demonstrate that their condition or treatment requires a longer duration of stay.

Visitor Visas can be extended past the initial six-month period in some circumstances. Where a visa holder is present in the UK for medical purposes, as an academic, needs to retake an examination or needs to complete a clinical attachment, they may apply for an extension. The fee to extend a visa of this type in the UK is currently a £1,000 one-off payment and will usually facilitate up to an additional six months’ stay.

A Filipino applying for a UK visa need not visit the country to file their application in most cases. While there may be differences occurring during the processing period if immigration services request additional documents as evidential proof for eligibility, the general process is as follows:

Complete the online visa application

The online visa application service is hosted on the GOV.UK website. The completion of this form, along with the submission of copies of any supporting documents is the first part of the application process. A separate visa application form will need to be submitted for each family member intending to travel.

Pay the visa fee

The visa fee must be paid online. The clearance of this payment starts the visa processing period. A visa fee payment is non-refundable, even in the event of a visa refusal.

Book an appointment at a local Visa Application Centre (VAC)

Applicants can book an appointment at a Visa Application Centre once their application fee has been paid. Visa Application Centres are located worldwide. In the Philippines, these centres are run by a third-party private company known as VFS Global. At the visa appointment, the applicant will provide their biometric information (a photo taken and fingerprints scanned) and hard copies of the required supporting documents.

In most cases, applicants will leave their passport at the VFS Global centre during processing.

Wait for written confirmation of visa decision

The immigration authorities will supply written confirmation of their decision to grant or refuse the Visitor Visa application once it has been reached. Whatever the decision, the applicant may then collect their passport from the VFS Global centre.

(If Visitor Visa granted) Travel to the UK

The visa holder is free to travel to the UK as soon as their Visitor Visa is valid.

(If Visitor Visa refused) Decide whether to appeal

If the applicant has received a refusal to their visa application, any appeal route will be detailed in their visa decision letter. If they decide to appeal, they should seek legal advice to do so. Call Total Law for more information on 0333 305 9375 .

In most cases, visa applications filed through a VFS Global centre will be processed between five and 15 working days from the date of submission of biometric information.

Where demand isn’t too high and the centre has the necessary staff available, a Priority Visa Service can be purchased for P10,000. This hastens the process to within three to five business days.

The UK visa application form is to be accompanied with an online fee payment to cover the processing and administration of the application. As of March 2024, these are as follows:

Standard Visitor Visa, £115 (approx. P8,200)
Visitor Visa for medical purposes, £200 (approx. P14,220)
Visitor Visa for academic purposes, £200 (approx. P14,220)
Two-year long-term Visitor Visa, £400 (approx. P28,450, valid for six months per visit)
Five-year long-term Visitor Visa, £771 (approx. P54,800, valid for six months per visit)
Ten-year long-term Visitor Visa, £963 (approx. P68,450, valid for six months per visit).

Other costs associated with visa applications include translation fees, copying and printing and travel costs.

Where’s my nearest VFS Global Visa Appointment Centre?

There are two VFS Global visa centres in the Philippines; one in Cebu (Unit 905, 9th Floor Kepwealth Center, Samar Loop cor. Cardinal Rosales Avenue, Cebu Business Park, Cebu City 6000) and one in Manila (6th Floor Makati Circuit Corporate Tower Two, AP Reyes Street, Brgy. Carmona, Theater Drive, Circuit, Makati City 1207). Both are open Monday to Friday, 0700-1600. Appointments must be booked in advance and will only be accepted when a UK visa application fee has been paid.

As of March 2024, the Cebu centre incurs an additional £76.50 fee which is payable at the appointment.

Can I switch my Visitor Visa to another type of visa once I’m in the UK?

There is no route to transfer a tourist visa for any other type of visa once a holder is in the UK. If you’re not sure of which visa type to apply for, speak to one of the Total Law team on 0333 305 9375 to discuss your options.

Can a Schengen Visa be used for Filipinos to visit the UK?

Despite popular misconception, the UK is not covered by Schengen Visas. Even when the UK was a member of the European Union (which it is no longer), it has never been a member of the Schengen Zone and so no such visas will be accepted at the border.

Can I include my child or other family members on my visa application form?

A different visa application form must be filed for every different person requiring a visa, but an adult applicant is able to apply on behalf of their partner and/or child if they are unable to do so themselves.

Why is my travel history checked by immigration services?

Visa applicants have their travel history checked to ensure that they are not using temporary visas or other travel documents for the UK regularly. Visits too regularly when not covered by a long-term Visitor Visa may be considered an attempt to live in the UK and so may result in a visa refusal.

What is a UK Tourist Visa?

A UK Tourist Visa is also called UK Standard Visitor Visa . You can apply for a Standard Visitor Visa if you want to visit the UK for the following purposes:

for leisure, for example on holiday or to see your family and friends
for business, or to take part in sports or creative events
for another reason, for example to receive private medical treatment

When is the Best Time to Apply for a UK Tourist Visa in the Philippines ?

According to the UK embassy, the earliest you can apply for a UK tourist visa in the Philippines is three months before you travel . For example, if you plan to visit the UK on July 30, you can apply for your tourist visa as early as April 30.

How to Apply for a UK Tourist Visa in the Philippines (Complete Guide with Pictures)

Step 1: create your visa4uk application account online.

Register an account at visa4uk, where you will fill out your application form that you need to print out and bring to the UK Visa Centre ( VFS Global ). You will also schedule your appointment using that website. You may find a sample screenshot below. Type all the correct details. Double-check everything, especially your name and passport details.

Step 2: Select your Type of Visa

Choose “Tourism” if you are applying for a Standard Visitor Visa . The basic visa sub type is valid up to six months.

Step 3: Answer Each Question on your Application Profile

Provide a truthful answer to each question. Then follow the steps to complete your application. You can go back again to edit your details. Do not CONFIRM your application until you have completed, finished, and checked everything and all information needed on the application. Once you have confirmed your application, you cannot go back, edit, or change anything.

Take note of every detail you will provide, such as this section below:

Do you have savings, properties or other income, for example from stocks and shares?

This will be about other means of income like passive income. In the example given, I put Yes for Stocks and Shares. I put N/A for the Total Monthly Income from stocks and shares because my income from stocks varies every month. To support this, I attached my Stock Certification from my broker.

What is the cost to you personally of your trip in GBP?

This will be the total expense for your trip in GBP.

The total amount of money you have for this trip.

This will be your total budget for the entire trip so it must exceed the total expense of your trip.

The cost of aeroplane, boat or train tickets.

This will be the cost of your roundtrip flights so the data on your flight reservation must be the same with this amount (in GBP).

The cost of your accommodation.

This will be the total cost of your hotel accommodations. Again, the amount must be similar to the amount from your hotel reservations.

Additional Information part

In this section, you can write everything you want to say that you think are important. Tell the consul valuable information they need to know regarding you and your application that was not provided in the previous parts of the application. You can also use this part to explain matters you think are worth mentioning.

Step 4: Schedule an Appointment and Pay the Visa Application Fee

Select a date for your appointment. Then, pay your visa application fee. The current Standard Visa fee is 100 GBP. Print your appointment confirmation and application form. You need to bring these documents to the UK Visa Centre (VFS Global).

Step 5: Gather the Documents Required

You can print out the checklist of UK Tourist visa requirements for Filipinos . In my case, I submitted the following (for self-employed applicants):

PSA Birth Certificate (I submitted a latest copy)
Philippine Passport
Old Passport with visa and travel stamps
Bank Statement (latest 6 months)
Bank Certificate
ITR (I submitted BIR Form 1701A since I’m self-employed with business)
DTI Permit (with my name and date the business started trading)
Mayor’s Permit (latest one)
Certificate of Stocks Investment
Travel Itinerary
Hotel Reservations
Roundtrip Flight Reservation

Step 6: Attend your Appointment at the UK Visa Centre (VFS Global)

Be there 15 minutes before your appointment time. The VFS Global handles visa applications for the United Kingdom and other countries like Australia, Canada, France, and many more. VFS Global is the middleman for visa applications. They forward the applications and documents to the embassies.

Step 7: Submit your Documents and Printed Application Form

I submitted original copies of my documents except for the ITR (Income Tax Return), DTI Business Name Registration, and Mayor’s Permit. VFS Global offers SMS and courier services for your UK tourist visa application.

Step 8: Have your Photo and Biometrics Taken

After the submission of documents, wait for your name to be called. You will then enter a room where VFS Global staff will capture your biometrics and photo. This is the last step at VFS Global. After this, you can go home and wait for your visa to arrive if you opt for the courier delivery of your passport. Otherwise, you can pick it up at VFS Global.

Step 9: Wait for your Visa Application Result

The nerve-wracking part is waiting for your visa approval. I got my passport with my visa after 15 days because I chose and paid for the regular processing. It was delivered to me via courier service. Since the pandemic occurred, it can take a longer processing time of 3-6 weeks.

Hi maam, this is my 3rd comment baka po ma reply nyo na ako this time. kaka received ko lang nung passport ko with refusal letter (sad) 🙁 stated in the reason of the refusal like this “Other than a business certificate and some tax documents, you have not provided satisfactory documentation to support that you are employed and earning as you state. You have not provided any pay receipts or your personal bank documents which would show your salary going into your account” yes i am registered as self-employed i handed over all my business registration docs, ITR return, bank documents both business account and personal account. now, sa reason ng refusal I did not provide “pay receipts” OR YOUR PERSONAL BANK DOCUMENTS” which is odd kasi i provided personal bank docs-certificate and statements covered 6 months transactions and, about pay receipt i assume this means pay slips! why need ko mag provide ng pay slips self-employed ako sole prop. yung business ko. upon reading your blog halos same tayo ng docs na sinubmit kasi as self-employed individual..nag avail ako ng documents scanning no receipt from VAC kung ilang piraso ang docs na na scan. may posibility kaya na na overlooked or di na scan nung VAC staff yung personal bank docs ko?? huhuhu nakakaiyak lang kasi aside dyan sa reason nila wala naman silang ibang reason of refusal. need lang po ng konting advise or any idea lang po kung ano ang possible na naging problem..

Hi EM 🙂 I did not avail the scanning since I personally submitted the documents at the VFS Global myself. I had the checklist and marked every item on the checklist that I was attaching to the application. Then the documents were arranged according to my checklist. The checklist is very important.

Aside from submitting the documents to VFS, it is required to upload the files in the VFS global website right? Additional question, for example someone will partly pay for the cost of my trip, would you know if I need to submit that someone’s bank certificate and statement as well? Thank you. Hi Didith. I booked my appointment online here https://myappointment.vfsglobal.co.uk/MyAppointment/ and I did not avail any of their services. My account was automatically created after completing the application form in https://visas-immigration.service.gov.uk/ . If you will not avail any of the VFS services, you will need to upload scanned copies of your documents in the website. They will no longer check your docs (except for the appointment confirmation letter and application form) during your appointment unless you availed of the scanning services. Physical copies of the docs will not be submitted as well. But to be sure, you should still bring your supporting documents. Hope this helps.

Hi Jeni. My application went well. I was actually granted with a multiple entry visa and I just came back from UK. Which is the beta version, the link I provided or yours? I think you can use either of the two. When I applied, I was in the visa4uk site at first but I saw this “You may be able to apply using our new service for visit visa applications…” and clicked the link of “new service” and I was redirected to the visas-immigration site.

Hello! I’m trying to book an appt at VFS global Makati since May 14, 2019 but all slots are for payment!!! Their website says they have standard slots/free but so far I could not find any. How do I get that standard slot? I’m applying for a standard tourist visa to London. No friends there, so if I could not get a standard slot, I will cancel /refund my USD 129. I refused to be ripped off by VFS!

I have the same problem. All of the slots given by VFS are attached to premium package which costs additional Php3300 on top of the visa fee. Although, a “free slot” is part of the legend but it does not show any time slot with no fee. How did you manage to get a “free slot” (the one with no additional cost) for the appointment?

Yes, I submitted original copies of my documents except for the ITR, DTI and Mayor’s Permit. I brought the original copies for verification though since the UK embassy requires original copies. Ask 3 copies of your Stock certification and also for bank cert and SOA if you will be applying visa for other countries.

I can only say embassies always look for strong ties that could convince them you’re going back to the Philippines. Since your business is new, in my own opinion, you need more strong proof like previous travels, first-world country visas, previous jobs/business with ITR, other source of income like investments/stocks. But then, that’s only my opinion. Embassies are unpredictable, only them know the answer with your situation 🙂

As of August 2023, COVID restrictions have been lifted. Fully vaccinated with two approved shots (one shot, if it's the Johnson & Johnson single-dose vaccine) and present valid proof of vaccination status; OR
Show a negative antigen test result taken no more than 24 hours old; OR

If one spouse is still in the Philippines, then they will need to wait and apply for the 13a Probationary visa when they are both in the Philippines .

The Philippine Government is committed to making travel easier and more accessible to international tourists and has recently introduced measures with this purpose in mind.

The Philippine government offers different types of visas for UK citizens seeking to visit the country.

These visas fall under two categories :

Non-immigrant permits

Travelers are encouraged to look through the different categories/sub-categories to see if they will be required to obtain a Philippines visa from the UK prior to visiting.

In the case of traveling to the Philippines as a tourist, there is now an easier way to obtain a permit for the country . The Philippine Government has launched an online Philippines eTA visa waiver application.

This allows eligible foreigners to apply for a Philippine eTA visa waiver from their homes or offices instead of having to visit a local embassy or consulate. The travel authorization is currently only available for citizens of Taiwan.

British citizens traveling to the Philippines

Brits should be aware that before boarding the plane to the Philippines, they will be required to show a ticket of onward or return travel from the country of origin.

In fact, some airlines can refuse to board a passenger if they don’t have a ticket or can suggest that the passenger purchase it there and then before they can continue with the onboarding process.

Other things Brits should keep in mind while traveling to the Philippines include the local customs regulations.

Certain items, like alcohol and tobacco, can be imported in limited amounts. Others, like firearms and weapons, are prohibited.

Do British Citizens Need an eTA for the Philippines?

British citizens are allowed visa-free entry into the Philippines for a stay of up to 30 days without the need to have an approved visa or travel authorization.

At the moment, a Philippines ETA for UK citizens is not required , as the electronic authorization system is only available for Taiwanese nationals. However, the program may be expanded to British citizens in the future .

In cases where a British national is aware that they will have to stay for a period of more than 30 days , they may have to acquire a visa prior to traveling to the country.

In other cases, British travelers can obtain an extension to their stay in the Philippines if they arrive on a visa-free basis but decide to stay longer. However, foreigners are usually charged extra for this.

Philippines eTA visa waiver requirements from the UK

In the event that a UK visitor needs to apply for an eTA visa waiver once the program is expanded, the Philippine Government has set certain criteria that must be met by all applicants .

The requirements are as follows:

Having a passport with minimum validity of at least 6 months after they leave the country
Return flight tickets
Hotel bookings
Cash or debit/credit cards

It is also worth noting that all travelers to the Philippines (including Brits) will have to go through a customs check at the port of entry, where they will be expected to clear security questions.

Incoming passengers may also be asked to provide certain travel documents and a printed copy of their Philippine visa (if applicable).

Philippines eTA application procedure from the United Kingdom

It is expected that the process of obtaining an eTA tourist permit for the Philippines from the United Kingdom will be very simple.

Applicants will need to go to the Philippines online application website and fill out the eTA application form from the United Kingdom .

It will then be necessary to fill in basic personal information and passport data , and provide a current email address. The applicant will also need to provide debit/credit card details to pay the ETA fee .

Once the form has been submitted, the applicant will be assigned a Unique Identification Number (UID) .

In group applications, the UID will be issued to the main applicant of the eTA authorizations. The traveler(s) will also be charged a processing fee upon submission of the eTA request.

It will be important to check that all of the fields on the eTA application have been filled out correctly.

This is because even small differences between the details of the applicant’s travel documents and the data provided on the form can affect the validity of the eTA visa waiver. As a result, the eTA holder could be prevented from entering the country.

In case the questionnaire presents incorrect or lacking information, the applicant will have to fill out a new form.

If the form has already been completed and the traveler needs to update the information provided, they can make the necessary changes by contacting the Philippine eTA application website and providing their UID.

How to receive the Philippines eTA for British citizens

After the application has been submitted, it is expected that it may take a few business days for it to be processed and for the visa waiver to be granted. In some cases, it might take longer if there is any additional processing that needs to be carried out on the application.

Once the Philippines eTA visa waiver for UK citizens is granted, the traveler will receive the authorization via email .

They should keep a copy of the eTA on their smartphone/handheld device and are also advised to bring a printout of the permit on a sheet of A4 paper to present at the Philippine border.

In the case of multiple applicants, a separate printed copy will be needed for each individual in the group. The eTA will need to be presented to Philippine immigration officials at the Philippine port of entry.

Health Requirements to Enter the Philippines from the UK

British travelers should also be aware that they may need to meet certain health requirements in order to be granted entry to the Philippines. As noted above, it is necessary for all travelers to complete an electronic Travel form before visiting the country .

It is also important for travelers from the UK to make sure they are up-to-date with all the required vaccinations for entry to the Philippines .

Additionally, British travelers are advised to ensure they have up-to-date travel insurance before visiting the Philippines. Although not mandatory, this will ensure that any healthcare expenses are covered if medical needs arise while abroad.
