The famous Flower Auction in Aalsmeer is the largest and busiest floral market in the world. The auction is located between Amsterdam and Schiphol Airport. So ideally to combine it with your Amsterdam stay or airport transfer.

Daily, around 20 million flowers are traded here. Visitors are welcome but must arrive early and only observe the action from walkways several meters above the flowers and the busy warehouse floor where mini transportation trains crisscross the world’s largest covered market at astonishing speed.

When is the Auction open for visitors?

The flower auction takes place every weekday from 7 am to 11 am (only until 9 am on Thursday). Therefore it is advisable to arrive as early as possible, because in the early hours everything is in full activity and the duration of the auctions can be shorter on certain days.

The flowers arrive from around 10 pm and are cooled and sorted during the night. The auctions are early morning and the sold flowers are distributed immediately. By late afternoon, all the flowers will have moved out and the warehouse is prepared for the next round.

What to expect of your Aalsmeer visit?

The most interesting aspect of the Aalsmeer flower market is seeing the logistics in action, rather than admiring flowers. Avoid disappointment by understanding in advance that the Aalsmeer flower auction is not Keukenhof. You will  not get up close and personal with the flowers. It’s usually billed as the “world’s only floating flower market” but don’t get your hopes up in that regard because the only things that are really floating are the houseboats behind the stalls, and even then you’ll only know that when you look behind them like in this photo to the right. And if you are a flower lover then you should consider a quick day-trip to the enormous flower auction just outside Amsterdam .

What you’ll see here

The Dutch genuinely do love their fresh flowers, and this market exists mostly for locals, though it’s also very popular with tourists. It’s open and reasonably busy even during January and February, so there’s plenty to see at all times of the year.

Prices at the flower market

Since it’s mostly local business, the prices are actually quite reasonable. This is an open-air market and if one place tries to charge too much, you are only a few meters from another shop that wants your business, so the competition and relatively low overhead make many things real bargains here. You can get several tulip bulbs for one euro even in small quantities, and better prices if you buy a bag of 30 or so.

Buying and bringing things home

There are certain types of bulbs that can be brought into the US or Canada, and other types that aren’t, and some of that has to do with the packaging. There are also ways of having the shopkeeper mail the bulbs to your home for you, but not all of them can be sent to all places. There’s plenty to choose from, so you should be able to find something that works.

Cannabis starter kits

Buying marijuana seeds in Amsterdam is legal, and it’s big business. Any seeds of high enough quality that you’d risk smuggling them home and growing them will cost at least €5 for each seed, and most of the best ones are way more expensive than that. These kits are good for a novelty photo, but probably nothing else.

Bloemenmarkt Flower Market

The Bloemenmarkt Flower Market is a floating market located on Singel. In the past, traders would sail in from the Amstel and sell flowers directly from their boats. The modern-day market uses a permanent floating structure and is primarily a place to buy souvenirs & flower bulbs rather than fresh flowers.

It’s well worth viewing the back of the market stalls from the other side of the Singel with the canal houses as an atmospheric backdrop.

The market is open from 9:00 -17:30 Monday to Saturday and 11:00-17:30 on Sundays.

The Bloemenmarkt is in the centre of Amsterdam located by the Munttoren .

It’s a very compact area and often very busy so try to arrive just after 9:00 when the market opens before it gets too crowded.

Take a shot of the back of the market from the other side of the water against the backdrop of the canal houses

Use camera phone to capture close up details such as flowers and souvenirs in the shops; clogs, windmills.

Be aware that not all of the stalls allow their products and displays to be photographed.
