Senior Friendly Day Trips

Senior-Friendly Southern California Day Trips. Below are some great day trips for seniors. These trips offer a slightly slower pace and plenty of places to sit and relax while taking in the scenery. Popular options for seniors include bus tours or a train journey aboard Amtrak. I selected all these destinations for seniors to escape their daily routine and enjoy an adventure. I hope every reader enjoys them, no matter their age.

Old Towne Orange

Take a Stroll Old Towne Orange

In Orange County, California, Old Town District is the perfect destination for a weekend day trip when all you want to do is wander. Old Town Orange will not disappoint, with bric-a-brac antique stores tucked neatly between cozy sidewalk restaurants and bubbling fountains. Most of the district’s points of interest are near the central plaza, which has plenty of free street parking.

Sherman Gardens Corona Del Mar Day Trip

Smell the Roses Sherman Gardens

Everything from exotic orchids to a California pepper tree is on display. Desert cactus, herbs, and, of course, a fantastic and super-fragrant Rose Garden are lovingly nurtured by the gardeners on staff. The on-site Café Jardin Restaurant offers handmade crepes, freshly baked pastries, and other goodies to make stopping at the gardens worthwhile. Sherman Gardens is easily walkable, and there are plenty of places to sit and enjoy nature.

Pacific Surfliner Train in California

Take a Trip on the Surfliner

A trip on the Pacific Surfliner can be as simple as a few miles to San Diego or Santa Barbara. Almost every train station along the route has an exciting attraction within walking distance. Popular stops include Mission San Juan Capistrano, San Clemente Pier, Old Town San Diego, and State Street Santa Barbara. Onboard snack bars and bathrooms make the train convenient for older and younger passengers.

Mission San Juan Capistrano Day Trip

Visit Mission San Juan Capistrano

Mission Capistrano is a good choice for a senior-friendly day trip. Tour buses and almost hourly train service make getting to the mission easy. Explore the mission’s beautiful gardens and historic buildings. In the spring, swallows migrate thousands of miles from their winter homes to San Juan Capistrano. There are plenty of nearby dining and shopping opportunities. If you still have some energy to burn off after the mission, I highly recommend visiting the nearby Los Rios Historic District .

Olvera Street Los Angeles Day Trip

Historic Olvera Street, Downtown Los Angeles

Olvera Street is adjacent to Union Station in downtown Los Angeles.  Olvera Street is a landmark that retains its authentic charm and captures the essence of what LA used to look like years ago. This area of Los Angeles features 27 historic buildings with a traditional Mexican-style plaza, including the Avila Adobe, constructed in 1818, and the former home to Francisco Avila, one of the city’s first mayors. Olvera Street is a popular stop for many tour buses. This trip would be best taken during the week as Olvera Street can get very crowded on weekends and holidays.

Heritage Valley Day Trip

Take a Sunday Drive Heritage Valley

State Route 126 connects Santa Clarita to Ventura. The highway follows the banks of the Santa Clara River through Heritage Valley and makes a beautiful place for a Sunday Drive. Plenty of areas of interest include Bennets Honey Farm and the historic town of Santa Paula. So make sure you allow plenty of time to take them all in. Unfortunaltly, the Filmore Railway has been closed for several years and no longer offers train excursions.

Richard Nixion Library

President Richard Nixon Library

Take a tour of the original farmhouse where President Nixon was born, just a few steps away from his final resting place. Inside the Library, the main gallery is where you can explore the history and the exhibits. The library features nearly 70 significant exhibitions, including a replica of President Nixon’s Oval Office and an extensive display of Nixon’s historic trip to China. A fantastic garden with a large reflection pool at the Library is ideal for sitting, relaxing, and enjoying the view.

Graber Olive House

Step Back in Time Graber Olive House

Graber Olive House specializes in tree-ripened olives, a somewhat time-consuming process but a superb way to bring out the best in these green and black beauties. The olives come from the family ranch located in the San Joaquin Valley. Several hundred tons of olives are trucked to the historic Ontario Olive House each year to be canned or processed into olive oil at gift shops and tours. Hours are limited, so check with their website before you go. Also in the area is Logan’s Candy Shop , which has been hand-making candy since 1933 and is well worth a look.

Los Angeles Farmers Market Day Trip

Lunch at Original Farmers Market

Since 1934, a historic landmark has been on the corner of Third and Fairfax. It’s called the Farmers’ Market, and it’s a fascinating place to spend the day. The market stores offer a remarkable selection of fresh fruits, candy, baked goods, homemade ice cream, wines, meats, and poultry. Parking is scarce here, so arriving early and planning a weekday visit is best. Take advantage of your retirement and visit during the week while most people work.

Automobile Driving Museum Vintage Car Rides

Take a Ride Auto Driving Museum

The Automobile Driving Museum has a remarkable, rotating collection of nearly 150 classic, antique, and historic cars, all with retro color schemes, snazzy hood ornaments, and unique taillights. Still, perhaps its claim to fame is that on Sundays, guests are given a rare opportunity to drive in a piece of history as they are whisked around in one of several pristine classic vintage cars from the museum’s collection. Even if you do not visit on a car ride day, this fun museum is an excellent place to see and learn about vintage vehicles.

Birch Aquarium

Discover Sea Life Birch Aquarium

The Birch Aquarium is located on a hilltop site that provides a panoramic view of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography campus just off the Pacific Ocean. Birch Aquarium is a mid-size facility with most of the displays indoors. One of the highlights of a trip to the aquarium is a 70,000-gallon kelp tank forest. If children are along on this trip, there is a very popular Tide Pool Plaza where they can touch and learn about the tide-pool animals. There is a bit of a walk from the parking lot to the Aquarium entrance, but once you get there, all the exhibits are on one level.

Casa Romantica San Clemente California

Casa Romantic San Clemente California

Casa Romantica is perched on a cliff overlooking the San Clemente Pier in South Orange County. This historic home was built in 1927 by the City of San Clemente, Ole Hanson. The 5-acre Casa Romantica estate was one of the first buildings in the new Spanish Village By The Sea. Due to a landslide, most of the garden area is closed, but visitors can still explore the interior rooms of the mansion. There is also a revolving art show and, on select weekends, various events.

Seal Beach

Enjoy the Seaside at Seal Beach

Home to the second-longest wooden pier in the United States, Seal Beach blends a rustic old surf town and a modern upscale cultural community. Of course, the main attraction that lures visitors to this quaint seaside town is the beach with its soft sand and sunshine. A trip to Seal Beach would not be complete without a visit to the Red Car Museum aboard Car No. 1734, a restored Pacific Electric Railway car on the corner of Main and Electric downtown.

Bates Nut Farm

Bring Home Some Treats Bates Nut Farm

Bates Nut Farm is tucked away in an oak-filled valley near Valley Center, California, and makes a great family day trip. The 100-acre Farm was established in 1921 when Gilbert and Beatrice Bates purchased the property. Today, the Bates Nut Farm offers a wide selection of nuts, dried fruit, candies, plus much more.

Santa Ana Zoo in Santa Ana, California

Visit The Santa Ana Zoo

If you’re looking for a zoo that’s not too big and requires less walking, the Santa Ana Zoo is perfect. The zoo has many exhibits, some of which could fit into a larger zoo. There’s also a lovely old-fashioned carousel, a fun mini-train that’s easily accessible, a delightful butterfly walk-through area, and a snack shop near the entrance. You can take your grandkids to a fun family outing at the Santa Ana Zoo .

Here are some tips for planning a day trip for seniors:

  • Choose An Accessible Destination: Make sure the destination is easily accessible and has amenities that cater to seniors, such as wheelchair ramps, elevators, and accessible restrooms.
  • Don’t Make The Trip Too Long: Always remember our senior citizens’ comfort when planning the trip. This includes selecting a comfortable mode of transportation, scheduling regular rest stops, and opting for moderate activities.
  • Choose Activities that Interest Seniors: It’s important to choose activities and destinations that match seniors’ interests, such as museums, historical sites, parks, or shopping. This enhances their enjoyment and engagement during the trip.
  • Check for discounts: Many attractions and Restaurants offer senior discounts. Be sure to check for these discounts when planning the trip.
  • Packing Essentials: Pack crucial items like water, snacks, medication, and a first-aid kit to ensure the seniors’ safety and comfort during the trip.

Adventures Abroad

While Adventures Abroad largely caters to travelers over 50, tours are open to adults of all ages, and operate on every continent except for Antarctica. The company's "soft adventure" trips, which focus on the culture and history of a destination, don't include strenuous activities, though a reasonable degree of fitness and the ability to walk are required. Trips are rated from one to three based on physical activity, with the first level featuring only leisurely walks and level two meaning more time on your feet each day. Level-three trips might include walks or hikes on uneven ground for three to seven hours, though at a leisurely pace. Specific trips are suggested for each activity level for easy planning.

An adventure travel company designed for people ages 50 and over, ElderTreks offers small-group adventures — think wildlife safaris, hiking trips, cultural journeys, and other unique expeditions — in more than 100 countries. The tours are rated by activity level, ranging from one to five. At level one, travelers should be able to walk for one to two hours, whereas at level five, they'll need to be capable of hiking for more than five hours.

Firebird Tours

Firebird Tours offers small group trips to destinations in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East that deliver value, comfort, and quality. Themes for guided tours include gastronomy, history, architecture, and the northern lights , as well as theater and opera. Seniors might want to check out a sightseeing highlights tour of Italy , or a two-week rail journey across Scandinavia with guided tours in cities like Copenhagen and Stockholm and an overnight in a scenic Norwegian fjord town.

Overseas Adventure Travel

With a variety of trips available to destinations on every continent, Overseas Adventure Travel makes a great choice if you're interested in seeing the world via small-ship cruises. In addition to guided land tours for groups of eight to 16, OAT offers sailings through the Norwegian fjords, along West Africa's coast, and throughout the Mediterranean and Adriatic Seas. Mature travelers are often attracted to the flexibility of the trips and the ability to personalize activities. Recognizing that many of its customers travel alone (half are solo women), O.A.T. has created getaways with single travelers in mind, whether they're first-timers or experienced adventurers.

EF Go Ahead Tours

Operating out of Cambridge, Massachusetts, EF Go Ahead Tours offers a selection of small group tours for 10 to 22 guests. The senior-friendly trips focus on interests such as food and wine, adventure, and safaris, as well as specific destinations and seasonal events (think Oktoberfest in Germany, holiday markets in Europe , or St. Patrick's Day in Ireland). Looking for travel groups geared toward singles? The company's solo tours provide private rooms, social events, and personalized experiences like yoga and cooking classes. What GAFFL Users Are Saying

Marie

"It’s really nice to have a platform like GAFFL with lots of travelers wanting to do the same as you, a real beautiful cultural exchange. You can meet people so easily and in a trustful way. We were four girls, from French, German and American backgrounds, without knowing each other from before. We spent an amazing week together, 2000km driving, camping on the way. We saw kangaroos, koalas, penguins and pelicans"

Saed

“I have found GAFFL to be an amazing tool for finding similar minded travel partners to embark on an adventure. Through GAFFL, I had organized a trip to Mexico City last month and Quazi joined the trip from Victoria, BC. We spent 14 days of straight exploring, hiking, eating and drinking. Quite an amazing experience - all thanks to GAFFL!”

Scarlett

"I accidentally scrolled across GAFFL and I'm so pleased I did. I met Amaia and immediately decided to road-trip together. We're spending 10 days together and it's great because we have so much in common. Couldn't have done it without GAFFL helping us find one another! It has honestly made NZ so much cheaper to explore as I get to split the costs with someone too"

Benefits of Solo Traveling for Seniors Over 50

Safety tips for seniors traveling alone.

Solo travel is great. But there are some times that I do not recommend someone travel solo and where I personally try my hardest not to travel solo. Some examples of this relate to safety, like hiking a trail that doesn’t have many people walking it each day, or being in certain destinations where I’ve heard from others that it’s difficult as a solo female.

Other examples relate to expenses, like taking a road trip and renting a car. Situations like these are where I think something like GAFFL is a great idea. With GAFFL, you can find a group to go on that hike with or split that car rental with!

One of the things that hold people back is that they don’t have a partner or a best friend to travel with and they feel scared and uncertain to travel alone, especially long-term. GAFFL helps with that!

Another thing that holds people back is the perceived cost of travel. While travel doesn’t have to be expensive, it’s always more affordable when you can share the cost of accommodation and groceries with someone else. Again, GAFFL provides a solution for that!

I think GAFFL plays a role by allowing solo travelers to find travel buddies when needed. Though solo travel is a great way to travel, there are some experiences that are better enjoyed with more people (some don’t even allow for solo).

Friends and families are not always available to travel with, and sometimes the interests do not align for travel. Or sometimes you just want to socialize while still being solo most of the time. I think GAFFL helps solve these problems.

I think this is a fabulous idea because the things that can get expensive while solo traveling can usually also be easily split between people. If you aren’t a hostel fan, it would be awesome to have people to split hotels and Airbnb with.

If car rental is the cheapest way to get around a destination, it would be ideal to have others to split the costs with. But most importantly it always makes the experience that much more memorable when you have new friends to share it with.

We truly believe that the best memories and experiences are the ones that are shared with others. It doesn’t matter if you’ve known someone for an hour or your whole life, when you do something badass together it’s sure to be a time you won’t forget.

Making connections and becoming friends with people all over the world is such a powerful tool to have when traveling. One day maybe you’ll visit your new friend in their homeland. Some of the best trips happen when you have a friend playing tour guide in their country.

GAFFL is a really cool opportunity to enrich your travels with like-minded people who will push you to get out of your comfort zone. No matter what type of personality you have, making new friends on the road is easier than ever.

Ready for a Getaway With Like-Minded Travelers?

Here are our favorite u.s. group tours for older women..

It's time to bust the myth that women can't travel alone! According to a "2023 Trend In Solo Senior Travel" report by Road Scholar, 20 to 30 percent of its nearly 100,000 travelers each year go solo — and that number is on the rise. Of these, 85 percent of Road Scholar’s travelers are women, who cite reasons such as ease in making friends, autonomy in decision-making, and having their own space as top drivers for solo adventures. Health and safety issues factor in, too. "Traveling within the United States eliminates a lot of the worries travelers have such as safety and access to healthcare," says Dionne Evans, agency owner/luxury travel advisor with Travel by DAE. Jen Rosa, franchise owner/travel advisor with Cruise Planners, echoes this sentiment: "We have ADA rules, which other countries do not, so if somebody has mobility difficulties, it’s much easier to travel in the U.S." Women of all ages are embracing solo journeys, finding fulfillment and joy, whether they travel around the world or across the country. If you want independence and community, consider joining a women-focused travel group for a secure, mindful experience. In doing so, you’ll meet like-minded women in a small group setting that fosters self-discovery and connection. Here are some curated United States group tours designed for female travelers.

Road Scholar Billing itself as "the world leader in educational travel for boomers and beyond," this nonprofit organization launched in 1975 as Elderhostel. Since then, it’s served more than 6 million lifelong learners — with 70 percent of travelers being women. (The average age is 72, and the average group size is 20.) This year alone, the nonprofit operated about 4,000 program departures, including 1,700 in the United States. "We estimate that nearly 60 percent of our solo travelers are married and travel without their spouse. I find that really inspiring!" says Meghan Flynn, AVP, program management & strategy, with Road Scholar. "It’s great to know that older women travelers today are so independent and aren’t letting any inhibitions or [lack of] companions hold them back from exploring the world!" Road Scholar boasts National Parks and Signature City programs — two of their most popular U.S. collections — along with plenty of opportunities to explore hobbies like pickleball or bridge. "Starting with a domestic program is a great way to dip your toes in the water, especially if you’re a solo traveler trying a group trip for the first time," explains Flynn. “Domestic travel is less expensive, and you can even select a program that you can drive to, avoiding air travel hassles."

EF Go Ahead Tours Headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts, EF Go Ahead Tours has been operating for over 55 years, with more than half of their travelers being women and an average group size of around 30. The company currently offers a dozen U.S. tours, ranging from New England, Alaska and Hawaii to the National Parks and the South. The tours appeal to women ages 50 and older, thanks to the manageable pace and the educational, comprehensive itineraries. "We take the worry away and plan the details so travelers can focus on the new sights, sounds and flavors of a destination — and often new friendships!" explains Heidi Durflinger, president of EF Go Ahead Tours. She says that the tour directors accompany the group for the duration of the tour — from arrival at the airport to departure on the final day. "It’s travel made easy so you can explore wherever you want to go without apprehension." Noting there’s so much to see right in our own backyard, Durflinger says, "You won’t have to worry about international entry requirements, yet you can still experience stunning landscapes, valley vineyards and scenic hiking trails."

My Senior Travel Buddies Based in San Diego, My Senior Travel Buddies launched just two years ago, with 90 percent of its travelers being women (100 percent of them age 50 and older) and a typical group size of 25 to 30 women. "Many of our travelers are a bit anxious to travel outside the U.S. when they’re traveling solo," notes travel agent Monique Kiefner. She advises finding the right tour to fit your activity style. "If you have a little bit of mobility issues, just keep that in mind when and find the group and trip that can accommodate that."

Gutsy Women Travel New York-based Gutsy Women Travel launched in November 2001, with the first trips occurring in 2002. Since its inception, Gutsy Women has hosted more than 500 group trips, with over 5,000 travelers along for global and domestic journeys. Catering to a 100 percent female customer base — and 90 percent of them age 50 and older — Gutsy Women understands female travelers’ needs. With no more than 16 participants per trip (sometimes as few as 8 to 10), the group tours provide an intimate, connected experience. "Women like to experience destinations with like-minded women to enrich the journey with the camaraderie and networking opportunities they’re exposed to on a women-centered tour," explains April Merenda, co-founder and president of Gutsy Women. This year, the company is offering “The American West: Cody Yellowstone & Jackson Hole” and “Alaskan Discovery: Denali National Park & the Kenai Fjords.” "The National Parks trip I took in 2019 with Gutsy Women (allowed me to) share my wonder and excitement of the beauty of parks and animals with others,” says Pat Wilson, a frequent traveler. “It's intoxicating to share experiences like this in a group. We feed off each other and create a fabulous, exhilarating experience." For older women considering a group tour, Wilson says, "Go for it! You'll not regret one moment. You'll feel safe and secure, plus a sense of camaraderie and a sense of privacy. In women's group tours, we’re cared for, and most of all, pampered." Tip: Head over to The Ethel On-The-Go Facebook group — a closed Facebook group for older women who love travel — for trip inspiration, insights and tips from other travel lovers. One final word of advice? "Be a traveler, not a tourist — immerse yourself in a destination to foster connections with those around you," advises Durflinger, president of EF Go Ahead Tours. “Our tours connect people with the history and stories behind a destination and with the people who call those places home."   Have you ever traveled with a tour group? Sightseeing in San Diego for Seniors

By train, by trolley, by bus - by all means enjoy san diego.

Last year, almost 10% of visitors to San Diego were age 65 and older. The area's popularity with seniors has much to do with its year round ideal temperate and sunny climate. It's also because of the ease of getting around to so many enjoyable attractions, with someone else doing the driving. Without having to navigate, drive, and park, you can enjoy the best of what America's Finest City has to offer on your visit!

Here is a weekend's worth of sightseeing in San Diego for seniors that involves a few good "rides" and minimal walking.

Old Town Trolley

Old Town Trolley offers highlights of the destination and popular visitor attractions while you travel on a comfortable open‐air trolley. Seaport Village, Balboa Park, Little Italy and Coronado Island are popular stops for lunch and photos. LGBTQ+ Friendly Places to Eat

Hillcrest has always been known for good food. The epicenter of the LGBTQ+ community could arguably be considered San Diego's first foodie neighborhood. Before the tide of craft breweries, artisanal doughnuts and design-conscious bistros, the area offered a wide variety of tastes, cultures and price points. Hillcrest — along with neighboring Balboa Park and Bankers Hill — keeps things fresh and exciting, welcoming adventurous flavors from all corners of the world. From San Diego staples to new kids on the block bound for distinction, these neighborhoods are filled with so many top restaurants, you may never get to them all. But there's no reason not to try! Restaurants of every genre fill cozy corner spots, high-ceilinged expanses and mood-lit nooks — and finding the best is a worthy endeavor. Here are a few stars to point you in the right direction.
