Overview for kilimanjaro guided bike tour.

The epic three-day Kilimanjaro Guided Bike Tour will take you to West Kilimanjaro plains, a region in Northern Tanzania comprising both Maasai community lands and Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs). The area is filled with acacia woodland and open plains that support a remarkable variety of wildlife and spectacular views of Mt. Kilimanjaro. Moreover, the most common animals in the area include wildebeest, zebra, gazelles, impalas, giraffes, and baboons. Depending on the time of the year, elephants can also be observed as the region lies along an elephant corridor linking Kenya's Amboseli National Park & Mt. Kilimanjaro.

Also, this region is home to the nomadic Maasai herdsmen who co-exist with the surrounding wildlife, hence the term "Maasai Land." Given the rich culture of the Maasai people and the variety of wildlife, a cycling tour in this area is ideal for those discerning travelers looking for an unforgettable off-the-beaten-path adventure experience that includes walking, photography, culture, and scenery.

Itinerary for Kilimanjaro Guided Bike Tour

Cycle to simba farm.

You will be transferred from your hotel in Moshi to Simba Farm, where you will start your bike tour in West Kilimanjaro. Your cycle day starts with a downhill slope through the farm as you head toward the main rough road. Then, you will follow the main rough road through the Ngare Nairobi village and cycle along the Ndarakwai Conservancy border towards the West Kilimanjaro airstrip. You will then follow the main dirt road towards the TingaTinga village. Finally, your ride will end at Olpopongi Maasai Village, where you will spend the night. Upon arrival at the Olpopongi Maasai Village, you will be welcomed by a traditional Maasai dance before having lunch and settling into your Maasai-hut-style rooms. You will also engage in a Maasai cultural tour in the evening before ending your day by enjoying a great dinner around a bonfire.

Bike to Maasai Lodge via Ngabobo Village

Today you will start cycling early in the morning and proceed south towards the Ngabobo Village. An early start ensures you cover enough distance before the sun comes out. Today’s path is exciting as you will cycle through the arid open grasslands, an environment completely different from the lush, green slopes of Mt. Kilimanjaro, which you have left behind. Also, wildlife such as wildebeest, giraffes, zebra, and elephants can be seen in the morning when we start cycling. Today’s route will be shorter but more challenging due to the terrain and weather. To finish, the last part of the path is a gradual ascent on a gravel road as you cycle through the Ngabobo Village toward the lodge. Today you will spend the night at the Maasai Lodge.

Today’s route takes us to a new vegetation zone as we leave the arid zone and proceed towards the greener slopes of Mt. Meru. The slope is a gentle ascent through gravel roads as we head towards Momella near Arusha National Park. Then we will cycle through streams of water flowing down the slopes of Mt.Meru as we head towards the village of NgareNanyuki, a lively small town where you will cycle towards Arusha National Park . You might be lucky to see several giraffes as you approach the park. Finally, our route today ends on the edge of the Arusha national park. Then, after resting a bit, you will be transferred back to your hotel in Moshi.

Kilema Route

The Kilema route is a special route set aside for mountain bike adventures and cycling on Mount Kilimanjaro . Before this route was established, most routes were for walking, hiking, or trekking on foot. Most mountain bikers used the Marangu route to climb to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, the Uhuru Peak but it used to be a major inconvenience, mixing up cyclers and climbers on foot. Kilema route measures (19km) long and cyclists usually meet their porters at Horombo before they embark on their bicycle journey to the summit. Cyclists that do not aim to reach the top of the mountain at Uhuru Peak, Kilimanjaro’s summit, begin their mountain bike adventure from Londorossi gate or from Morum Picnic Site then back to Morum enduring a combined a 44km long  ride.

Special Kilimanjaro Route for Mount Bike Climbing

The Kilema Route is a new route introduced recently specifically for biking tours or cycling up Mount Kilimanjaro. Just like the other routes on the mountain, it is recommended to add an extra day or extra time for acclimatization to minimize the effects of altitude sickness.

Kilema Route Acclimatization

Tranquil Kilimanjaro offers Kilema Route acclimatization hike from the Marangu gate to Mandara Hut Camp by trekking before embarking on the designated cycling route of Kilema.  Acclimatization trek helps to minimize altitude sickness by helping the body to adjust to higher altitudes that are more demanding and challenging.

Cycling on Kilimanjaro via Kilema Route

The typical Kilimanjaro cycling tours via the Kilema Route begins early in the morning at the Marangu gate at around 8:00 am. It is here at the Marangu gate where you go through the registration formalities for entering the park of Kilimanjaro.

After completing the registration process at the gate, you will drive west to Kilema Gate for about one hour where the cycling on Mount Kilimanjaro begins.

You will cycle from Kilema Gate to Kilema Cave for an 8km endurance biking tour rising in altitude as you traverse the rainforest zone of Mount Kilimanjaro edging closer to the moorlands zone of Kilema cave.

Since the Kilema Route is new, it has less traffic, is remote and scenic.

Summiting Kilimanjaro while cycling and biking descent via Kilema Route

Reaching Uhuru peak to summit, you will begin summiting from Horombo to eventually join up with the Marangu route path that leads to the summit.

To go down the Mountain, descent follows the same route towards Horombo then exiting the park through the Kilema Gate.

Accommodation on Kilema Cycling Route, Mount Kilimanjaro

Accommodation on the first night of cycling via Kilema Route is in tents at Kilema cave and campsite. The rest of the journey offers accommodation in the form of huts both at Horombo and Kibo Huts.  The Horombo hut has a capacity of accommodating around 120 people at a go as it consists of 120 bunk beds while Kibo huts consist of 60 bunk beds with each hut containing 6-8 bunk beds.

The Huts lighting is solar-powered with flush toilets that have enough water supply from a nearby stream.

1 - Day West Kilimanjaro Bike Tour

FIRST STOP: Transfer from West Kilimanjaro Starting Point:

In the early morning, we will embark on our journey towards West Kilimanjaro. Along the way, there are numerous sights to behold, including the stunning view of Mount Kilimanjaro and the captivating sunrise on this side of West Kilimanjaro

SECOND STOP: Ngarenairobi

Upon arriving in the town of Ngarenairobi, we will unload our bikes to commence our journey. Ngarenairobi is a town close to one of the popular routes for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, the Lemosho route. Riding approximately 8 kilometers through the villages of Ngarenairobi, predominantly inhabited by the Meru people and a mix of other farming and pastoralist communities, provides a cultural experience. En route to our second stop, passing through the area known as “mawasiliano,” covering 17 square kilometers, offers opportunities to encounter various wildlife and enjoy beautiful views from Mount Meru.

THIRD STOPS: Tingatinga maasai villages

Upon reaching Tingatinga, a Maasai village, we will replenish with water and sodas before continuing our journey. The route passes through Maasai villages, known for their prominent pastoralist culture in Africa.

FOURTH STOP: Ngabobo Wildlife Corridor

One of the highlights making West Kilimanjaro ideal for cycling is the presence of wildlife corridors connecting Arusha National Park to Amboseli National Park in Kenya. These corridors also serve as pathways for Maasai herders, adding to the unique experience of cycling in this serene and scenic region.

last stop : Osiligilai Maasai Village

After cycling for approximately four to five hours, it’s time to enjoy a delicious authentic African lunch prepared in a Maasai village, Osiligilai. Welcomed with Maasai songs and dance, you’ll have the opportunity to learn about the history, traditions, and customs of the Maasai people. After a brief historical overview, it’s time to return to your accommodation area, Our driver will pack the bike on car ready for transfer.
