Incredibly frustrating experience!

Not sure why your app does not notify of changes to seats we’ve booked for months. Went to check in and saw my wife and I were separated by 12 rows AND on opposite sides of the 787, without any notification. This is unacceptable and too easy to remedy. A simple e-mail or text would suffice to let me know to work this issue, but no, you just separate us without a word! Then, spent 50 minutes on hold to change seats way back in economy and had to ask to get economy plus bundle refunded. Now on hold to talk to a supervisor because the representative is not authorized to do anything other than change seats and give us a refund of our bundle. Though she was very nice and efficient (after 50 minutes on hold) she was not authorized to do anything to bring me back as a customer. I am reconsidering United as my preferred airline. This has been incredibly frustrating. Oh, and to register a complaint, I have to go to your website and “fill out a form.” I would expect to be contacted by a customer service rep directly after this poor service. Great Agent Frustrating online system

And checking in I had two experiences: the first was online, and was extremely frustrating, and did not provide options, reflecting my personal circumstances. Additionally, I couldn’t find a phone number for customer service while I was trying to check in and encountering problems, me so I had to engage a separate search. The second experience wash great: with the help from your agent Gretchen. Gretchen positively delightful. I explained my handicap to her and she help me find appropriate accommodation. She however didn’t have authority to help me with the United online system failure regarding my baggage check. Luckily with her help and encouragement, iI reengaged the online check in. I want to make a special point of stating that with Gretchen’s help and courtesy, what seemed on the verge of becoming a very bad experience ruined to a satisfying one. She was very charming and polite and found creative way to sort out my personal problem. The problem she was not able to help me with, is my coming that comparing United economy class, to those of other airlines like Jet Blue, American Southwest Delta, and and all the international airlines I use. The best airlines (Southwest, Jet Blue, Jet Blue, for example allow economy customers one free, checked bag, and addition to the carry-on. Except for the lovely agent, Gretchen, I was very disappointed in United Airlines performance so far with regards to this flight.

Frustrating experience

Had a bad experience last night at Aspen Airport. Flight was delayed because of an incoming aircraft delay. Notification was horrible, leading many people to go to the airport and wait for four hours. Fortunately I have a residence nearby and was able to go back to my house and wait there. There was, of course the expense of the Uber. Then got back to the airport around 945 pm and everything seemed good -we loaded on the plane and pulled away from the gate and then had to cancel because of lack of deicing equipment. I was automatically rebooked to this morning. That flight time changed suddenly a little after 7 am and then when I went on your app to rebook, it offered the option of choosing standby without losing your original confirmation. I went to do that, but was unable to do anything other than confirm a different flight. I did that, despite that not being my preference, and then was not assigned to a seat. When I went to choose seats, the first class seats which I had paid for in my previous flight were not available. No big deal. But when I went to choose an exit row seat, it wanted to charge me $69 more despite the fact that I had originally had a first class booking. I spoke to an agent via the text option and she was unable to help me! What’s the point of having a customer service agent if they can’t provide service to the customer? overall, United has some big issues and needs to understand that there has to be a focus on the customer.

Athing Mu falls, finishes last in 800m at US Olympic track and field trials

EUGENE, Ore. — Disaster happened in the first lap of the women’s 800-meter final at the U.S. Olympic track and field trials at Hayward Field.

Defending Olympic champion Athing Mu got tangled up with competitors, tripped and fell to the track. The spectators inside the stadium let out a huge gasp as she hit the ground. By the time Mu regained her footing, she was in last place.

The other competitors continued to run as Mu trailed far in the back of the pack.

“We fear when she is in the middle of the pack because of her long loping stride that she may fall to the track,” NBC track and field analyst Sanya Richards-Ross said on the broadcast. 

Nia Akins ended up finishing the 800 final in first, running a 1:57.36. Allie Wilson placed second at 1:58.32 and Juliette Whittaker came in third at 1:58.45.

Mu, showing good sportsmanship, continued to run well out of position and finished in last place with a time of 2:19.69. After Mu finished, she exited the track visibly emotional.

The trials marked the 2024 debut for Mu, who hadn’t competed since September 2023. She was bothered by a hamstring injury that delayed the start of her 2024 season.

In the preliminary round of the 800, Mu was noticeably rusty. She finished third in her heat when she ran a 2:01.73, but easily qualified. Mu showed improvement and won what was a dramatic 800 semifinal that featured Michaela Rose getting out to a big early lead and Kate Grace falling at the finish line.

Unfortunately for Mu, she was the one who fell to the track in the final and it cost her a chance to defend her gold medal in Paris.

At the Toyko Olympics, Mu became the first American woman to win an Olympic gold medal in the 800 since Madeline Manning did it at the 1968 Mexico City games.

Defending 800-meter gold medalist Athing Mu will miss Paris after fall in Olympic trials

Athing Mu, the defending Olympic gold medalist in the 800-meter race, tripped and fell during trials Monday, ending her bid to make the U.S. team headed to the Paris 2024 Olympics.

The shocking turn of events for Mu, the 2023 World Championships bronze medalist, showed how difficult it is to make the elite U.S. track and field Olympics team.

Nia Akins, Allie Wilson and Juliette Whittaker finished 1-2-3 and are all going to their first Olympic Games.

The mishap, just a few moments into the final race to determine who's getting on the plane to Paris, took place at the U.S. Olympic track and field trials in Eugene, Oregon.

“It doesn’t matter who you are,” Ato Boldon told NBC Olympics  in a pre-Trials roundtable . “You’re guaranteed drama. It’s the toughest team in the world to make.”

Earlier in the year, Mu had been nursing a sore hamstring and pulled out of two competitions.

Still, many expected her to compete in Paris.

“It’s tough to see, especially for someone like Athing, who you know could win a gold medal," 400-meter hurdler Rai Benjamin said from the sideline Monday. "And you just — you feel for her, because it’s, like, she’s supposed to be there, you know? But that’s just USA Track & Field. Like, it’s the hardest team to make, and anything can happen here."

At the 2020 Tokyo Games, Mu earned gold medals in the 800 meters and the 4x400-meter relay.

Flight Review: South African Airways Airbus A320 Business Class From Johannesburg To Windhoek

• South African Airways business class on the Airbus A320 offers comfortable seats and generally good service.
• Online bidding for upgrades to business class is a convenient option with reasonable prices.
• The A320 business class cabin lacks seatback entertainment, but passengers can use a wireless entertainment system.

While business class on a single-aisle aircraft differs slightly from a widebody, it is still a comfortable way to travel on short flights. On Tuesday, June 18, I flew on South African Airways business class on the Airbus A320 from Johannesburg to Windhoek, Namibia. For several years, the airline was known for having one of the most luxurious business cabins in Africa, so let’s see if that is still the case.

Bidding for a business class upgrade

I got to try the SAA business class cabin when flying from Johannesburg OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) to Windhoek Hosea Kutako International (WDH) for the annual AviaDev Africa conference. I was initially booked in economy class, but when I was checking in online the night before my flight, South African Airways offered me an upgrade to business class. The minimum amount was $23 (R425), which I thought was reasonable. However, there was a 20% discount on the standard bidding price for a promotion ending on June 18.

I placed my bid of $23 , and in the morning, the airline sent an email saying my bid was accepted. As such, I received all business class benefits, including lounge access, additional baggage allowance, a special check-in counter, and priority boarding. With a 15:00 departure time, I arrived at the airport at about 13:00 local time. I headed for the premium check-in point with a nice red carpet and stanchions, so I got to skip the queue. I checked in and headed straight to the immigration point.

Unfortunately, there were about 100 passengers and only three immigration officers, so I spent nearly 45 minutes in the line. I thought of trying another security checkpoint, but I thought the situation might be the same. However, after getting my passport stamped, I rushed straight for the lounge as time was running out. SAA’s The Lounge is located next to the Emirates Lounge. It provides a comfortable place to sit or work before your flight.

SAA Flight 076 to Windhoek was boarding at Gate A2, about an eight-minute walk from the lounge. After spending about 30 minutes in The Lounge, I began preparing to leave and board my flight. However, the airline announced that boarding would be delayed by about ten minutes , so I waited. I eventually made my way to the gate, but still, the airline was not ready to board the passengers, so I waited again.

Eventually, the staff sorted out their issues and called us to board the plane. All business class passengers and Voyager elite members had priority, so it was a pretty smooth process. However, all passengers were boarded from the same door and jet bridge, so obviously, there would be some commotion in the line. I went to my Seat 3A (I always sit by the window), and luckily, the seat next to me remained unoccupied.

The business class cabin is in a 2-2 configuration, while economy class is in 3-3. I was flying on the Airbus A320-200 , registration ZS-SZB, which took its first flight in June 2013 and was delivered to SAA the following month. It has 114 economy and 24 business class seats with a pitch of 39 inches. The aircraft has comfortable leather seats with a leg rest, wide armrest, a generous amount of legroom, and enough recline for a comfortable flight.

While the seats were incredibly comfortable, some of the leather was getting old. The leg rest would also fold too easily each time I put any weight on it, so it was a bit uncomfortable at times. Nonetheless, the cabin was exceptionally clean, and the crew was very amiable. The business class cabin also has power points to charge a smartphone. However, the Type G sockets in the cabin mean that most people with laptops purchased in South Africa can’t plug them in unless they have an adapter, as most of the country uses Type D.

Food, drinks, and in-flight entertainment.

We taxied quickly, and the aircraft departed the airport at about 15:19 local time. As the aircraft became airborne, there was a strange, consistent noise coming from the front of the aircraft, and it was quite loud from where I was sitting. However, it eventually died down, and everything sounded normal again.

As soon as the aircraft leveled up, the cabin crew began the meal service. Starting off with the drinks, there was a wide selection of hot and cold beverages. Passengers could choose from soft drinks, water, fruit juices, wines, beers, and other alcoholic beverages. This time, I opted for a glass of Amarula, Africa’s rich and premium cream liqueur. Later, I asked the flight attendant for some ice, and she said,

Good choice! This is my favorite drink, and I always take it with ice. I envy you, but Im sure you will enjoy it.

She was very friendly, and she even took the time to have personal conversations with any passengers who were interested. Eventually, the food came out, and I opted for the duck meal. The options included:

I had a small tray with duck meat and beans, bread and butter, mixed veggies and a salad, a piece of cheesecake for dessert, and a pack of Wheatsworth crackers. The cutlery was also branded with the SAA logo, showing that the airline hasn't really lost its touch.

Wireless In-Flight Entertainment

Unfortunately, the A320-200 does not have seatback entertainment. There are only a few overhead screens that show the flight map and a few ads from time to time. However, passengers can use the wireless entertainment system provided by SAA. To access it, you have to log in to a wireless network, which sends you to a page on Google where you can sign in and view the entertainment offers.

There is a wide selection of movies, TV shows, games, music, and duty-free products. However, in situations like this, I always opt for my own entertainment. I have a carefully curated playlist on Spotify, which I always play on regional flights that don’t have seatback entertainment. I have also stocked up on a number of movies and episodes of my favorite series.

Arriving at Windhoek Airport

The rest of the flight was smooth and uneventful, and the crew kept coming to check on the passengers. I got a refill of my Amarula drink and sat back comfortably until landing. We arrived at Windhoek Hosea Kutako at about 17:14, giving a flight time of about 1h 55m. We taxied to the gate, and the ground handlers brought the passenger stepladder. I was keen to witness this process because Windhoek Airport changed handlers last year, and the transition was not so smooth . However, it seems like the issues were resolved.

I made my way to the arrivals terminal, where several chaperons were waiting for us as conference delegates. There was also a dedicated line at immigration, so the process was flawless. By the time I got to the carousel, my luggage had already been collected, so I hopped onto the shuttle and headed for the hotel.

While the conference lasted only three days, I spent six days in Namibia. Over the weekend, I got to explore what the country has to offer. I visited Sandwich Harbor, one of the few places in the world where the desert meets the ocean. I returned to Johannesburg on SAA Flight 077, but this time in economy. I chose Seat 29A, right at the back of the plane , and there was no other passenger in at least a three-seat radius.
