15 Top-Rated Tourist Attractions & Things to Do in Moscow

Written by Diana Bocco Updated Dec 23, 2023 We may earn a commission from affiliate links ( )

Moscow is one of Europe's most enigmatic destinations, home to a fascinating history and colorful, awe-inspiring architecture you won't find anywhere else in the world. Moscow might be one of the most populous cities in the world with over 11 million inhabitants, but this hasn't changed its strong cultural and social traditions.

Walk the cobblestone streets of the Red Square or the banks of the Moskva River early in the morning, and it's hard to tell what century you're in.

Tsarist architecture, must-see churches, and glamorous shopping opportunities blend together for a visual experience you won't forget. For ideas on what to see and do while visiting Russia, here's our list of top tourist attractions in Moscow.

1. Marvel at the Size of the Kremlin

2. catch a performance at the bolshoi theatre, 3. shop at the luxurious gum, 4. make your way into lenin's mausoleum, 5. spend an hour (or three) at red square, 6. discover history at the museum of cosmonautics, 7. ride the stunning moscow metro, 8. explore the moscow state integrated museum-reserve, 9. spend a rainy day at the tretyakov gallery, 10. walk up and down arbat street, 11. stop by the vdnkh all-russian exhibition centre, 12. wander around gorky park, where to stay in moscow for sightseeing, map of tourist attractions & things to do in moscow.

Kremlin

Moscow's most recognizable structure is without a doubt the Kremlin, a 15th-century fortified complex that covers an area of 275,000 square meters surrounded by walls built in the 1400s.

The Grand Kremlin Palace -which has over 700 rooms- was once home to the Tsar family and is now the official residence of the president of the Russian Federation, although most heads of state choose to reside elsewhere.

The massive complex also includes many other buildings, some of which are open to the public and can be visited regularly. Aside from three cathedrals (including one where the Tsars were once crowned) and a number of towers, the Kremlin is also home to the Armory building, a museum holding everything from the royal crown and imperial carriages to the ivory throne of Ivan the Terrible and Fabergé eggs.

Bolshoi Theatre

The Bolshoi Theater is home to the largest and one of the oldest ballet and opera companies in the world . While the theater has undergone several major renovations over the past century-including a recent one in 2011 to restore some of the imperial architectural details-it still retains all of its Neoclassical grandeur.

The Bolshoi Theater you see today opened in 1824, after several older versions burned down. Inside, red velvet, a three-tiered crystal chandelier, and gilt moldings give the place a Byzantine-Renassaince grandiose feel like no other.

Catching a show from the resident ballet and opera troupes is a treat, as the theater often presents a number of classic performances, such as Tchaikovsky's Mazeppa and Rachmaninoff's Francesca da Rimini, both of which originally premiered here.

GUM

Moscow's oldest and most upscale shopping center is an architectural marvel. GUM (short for Glávnyj Universálnyj Magazín or "Main Universal Store") was built in the late 1800s in neo-Russian style to showcase a beautiful mix of a steel skeleton and 20,000 panels of glass forming an arched roof.

This was a unique construction at the time, since the glass had to be strong enough to support the snow-heavy Russian winters. The building is just as impressive outside, with all three levels covered in marble and granite.

While GUM is no longer the largest shopping center in Moscow, it's still by far the most beautiful. Home to brands like Gucci and Manolo Blahnik, this might not be the ideal destination for most budget-conscious visitors, but the beauty of the building itself is worth a visit.

On the third floor, there are also great dining options, including a Soviet-style canteen that serves traditional Russian food, and a stand selling ice cream made by hand using an original 1954 recipe originally approved by the Soviet government.

Lenin's Mausoleum

Lenin's Mausoleum, the final resting place of Soviet leader Vladimir Lenin, occupies a central spot in Red Square. His body has been in the mausoleum since his death in 1924-and although the original plan was for him to be buried after a short period of public display for mourning, the plan quickly changed.

After over 100,000 visited the tomb over a period of six weeks, it was decided that a new sarcophagus and a more permanent display space could actually preserve Lenin's body for much longer than expected-and Lenin's Mausoleum was built.

Over the years, the mausoleum and its marble stairs also became the main spot from where Soviet leaders would watch parades and events happening in Red Square.

Lenin's embalmed body can still be seen today, lying down in a bulletproof glass sarcophagus as if he's sleeping. While a visit to the mausoleum is certainly unusual, it has become a must-do for history buffs looking to understand how Lenin's legacy truly changed the nation. Come ready to wait, though -there are usually lines to get in.

St. Basil's Cathedral on Red Square

All of Moscow's main streets start at Red Square, so it's easy to see why this is considered the heart of the city. A massive space of 330 meters by 70 meters, the square is flanked by the Kremlin, Lenin's Mausoleum, two cathedrals, and the State Historical Museum.

In 1945, a massive Victory Parade was held here to celebrate the defeat of Nazi Germany by the Soviet Armed Forces.

St. Basil's Cathedral , one of the most recognizable buildings on the square, was built in 1555. The unique cathedral has architectural details inspired by Byzantine and Asian design, as well as details that resemble those found in famous mosques. There are nine individual chapels inside the church, all decorated with colorful mural art.

Both the square itself and the Kremlin are recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites . On weekends, there are sometimes stalls selling souvenirs and traditional items here, such as matryoshka (Russian nesting dolls), at the entrance of the square.

Monument to the Conquerors of Space

At one point, Russia and the US were toe-to-toe when it came to space exploration. While that might no longer be the case, the museum's amazing collection-which includes over 85,000 items-is still awe-inspiring.

Main exhibits include the space capsule used by Yuri Gagarin , the first human to travel into outer space; a USSR flag with moon fragments; a Soviet spacesuit; and a rocket propulsion unit from the 1960s. A special two-story hall showcases sections of the Mir space station interior, and there are also models of the first sputniks and a replica miniature spaceship.

English-language tours are available, and there's also a Cinema Hall showing subtitled short films about the history of space exploration programs and the first manned space flight.

The museum is located inside the base of the monument to the Conquerors of Space, which was built almost 20 years before the museum opened.

Komsomolskaya Station on the Moscow metro

Riding the Moscow metro is an experience all in itself, but even just heading underground to walk through the stations is something no visitor should miss. With 223 stations and 12 metro lines crosscutting through Moscow, however, this can be tricky, so visiting at least a few of the most impressive ones is a good start.

Arbatskaya station was designed by a skyscraper architect, so it's no surprise that it features multicolored granite slabs and impressive bronze chandeliers.

Park Kultury station , located next to Gorky Park, is covered in marble and features reliefs of people involved in sports, while Teatralnaya station is decorated with porcelain figures dancing and wearing traditional Russian costumes.

The metro is open between 5:30am and 1:00am but it's very crowded in the early morning and after 4pm, so it's better to visit in the late morning or early afternoon to really appreciate the architecture without the crowds.

Kolomenskoye Estate

The Moscow State Integrated Art and Historical Architectural and Natural Landscape Museum-Reserve is a cultural open-air museum complex comprised of four different historical sites.

The most important site, the Kolomenskoye Estate, was once the summer residence of Tsars as far back as the 14 th century. The complex, which covers almost 300 hectares, is home to fairy-tale wooden palaces; a tent-roof stone church built in the 1500s; a water tower; fort towers and structures; and the 24-room Museum of Wooden Architecture , which includes the restored dining room of Tsar Alexei I.

Beautiful manicured gardens , riverside picnic areas, and a massive collection of both artifacts and structures make this a great destination to help you see what medieval Russia looked like. English-language tours are available, but you're also free to wander the grounds on your own.

Tretyakov Gallery

The largest collection of Russian art in the world sits here, with over 180,000 paintings, sculptures, and religious art dating back to over a millennia ago. The gallery, built using beautiful red and white colors from classical Russian architecture, is located near the Kremlin and it was built in the early 20 th century.

Significant art pieces include the Vladimir Mother of God; a Byzantine icon of the Virgin and child dating back to the 1100s; Andrei Rublev's The Trinity icon from the 15 th century; and several works by Ilya Repin, the most famous realist painter in Russia.

On the grounds of the museum, there is also an 86-meter-tall statue of Peter the Great, as well as a number of Socialist Realism sculptures.

Night view of Arbat Street decorated for the holidays

Moscow's one-kilometer-long pedestrian street has been around since the 15 th century. Originally a trade route in the outskirts of the city, Arbat Street is now very centrally located, home to posh buildings and lots of places to eat and shop.

Beautiful street lamps and two significant statues-one of Princess Turandot (from Puccini's last opera) and one of Soviet-era poet Bulat Okudzhava-adorn the street, which fills up with both locals and tourists on evenings and weekends.

A great place to pick up souvenirs or sit down at an outdoor café, Arbat Street also offers a chance to visit the former home of poet Alexander Pushkin and the café both Anton Chekhov and Leo Tolstoy used to visit.

VDNKh All-Russian Exhibition Centre and the Friendship of the Peoples Fountain

Although it was originally designed as a general-purpose trade show venue, this park complex now houses amusement rides , ice rinks , and a number of galleries and other attractions for all ages.

The park's most famous landmarks are the Moskvarium, a marine biology center home to over 8000 species of marine animals, the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art, and a shopping center selling traditional products from former Soviet countries.

There's even a film museum showing Soviet cartoons or even a full-length film (for an extra fee) and an education center offering masterclasses on everything from becoming a barista to video montage (call or write in advance to find out which ones are English-friendly).

Soviet-era pavilions, sculptures, and fountains abound here as well, including the famous Friendship of the Peoples Fountain, which features statues of women dressed in costumes from different former Soviet countries.

Main entrance gate to Gorky Park

Named after the famous Russian writer Maxim Gorky (who was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature five times but never won it) and sitting right across the Moskva River, Gorky Park covers 120 hectares of beautiful ponds and green spaces.

Popular with both locals and tourists, the park offers a variety of things to enjoy-from sunbeds, hammocks, and drinking fountains to free yoga classes and children's playgrounds. There's free Wi-Fi and sockets for charging your phone, as well as many food stands and plenty of wild animals, including deer, rabbits, and pheasants.

Visitors can rent paddle boats and bicycles to explore the park-and from May to October, there is also an open-air movie theater, as well as scheduled presentations by street performers, musicians, and artists. The man who shot former president Trump on Saturday reportedly used a DPMS-brand AR rifle purchased by his father.

That brand is now owned by the parent of South Carolina-based Palmetto State Armory, which Trump himself visited during a campaign stop in 2023 — taking photos with the owner and admiring a Glock handgun with his face engraved in the grip.

At the time, a Trump spokesman said the former president purchased the gun, which could have been illegal because he was under indictment last fall. Hours later, the spokesman clarified that Trump stopped short of completing the gun transaction.

A similar DPMS AR chambered to shoot 5.56 ammunition was one of the rifles used in the 2015 San Bernardino terrorism attack where a married extremist couple targeted a Christmas party at a banquet hall, killing 14 and wounding another 22.

Details about the rifle used Saturday have been slow to emerge as the FBI examines the weapon , officials told Fox News , but the company behind the named rifle has a long history, including being bought and sold several times recently.

DPMS stands for Defense Procurement Manufacturing Services. Founded in 1985, it was a defense contractor started by Randy Luth. Under Luth, the St. Cloud, Minnesota-based company was a fast-growing manufacturer of AR parts that eventually developed Panther Arms brand of firearms.

Weapons experts worldwide have suggested since Saturday that the AR used Saturday was a poor choice for effective long-range shooting. The shooter was perched on a rooftop approximately 150 yards away from the podium where Trump was speaking. It’s unclear if he used any optics to magnify his perspective.

Former Navy SEAL sniper and author Brandon Webb said a well-trained shooter would nonetheless have been much more accurate.

“At 200 yards, anyone trained on a rifle can shoot a golf ball repeatedly and a trained sniper knows this is an easy headshot, a tap in golf putt, even with iron sights,” Webb said in his “after action report” about the shooting.

About the DPMS AR rifle

Federal officials investigating the shooting said the AR rifle was “nothing special” since the ubiquitous rifles have taken on a standard look and shooting characteristics.

It has an average muzzle velocity around 2,800 feet per second — nearly three times the speed of sound, so bullets flying nearby sound like snaps or miniature sonic booms.

The rifles are roughly 32 inches long, including the stock, and weigh about 6.8 pounds. Most weapons in this line are replicas of the Army’s M4 in semi-automatic form. They’re all lightweight, gas-operated, air-cooled and magazine-fed weapons.

AR originally stood for “ArmaLite Rifle,” back when it was developed in the 1950s by a company for the military. Colt purchased the patents for AR-15, which has since expired. Clones of the AR platform are widely sold by dozens of brands in various calibers.

DPMS' current version of that AR sells for roughly $800.

Since the 2000s, DPMS has taken several forms and relocated manufacturing from Minnesota to Alabama in 2014.

Luth sold his company to a consortium of other firearms groups known as Freedom Group in 2007 – a group owned by private equity firm Cerberus. That firm combined with Remington Outdoor Company, which then went through a bankruptcy and then a massive lawsuit filed by the Sandy Hook shooting families.

In 2020, Remington’s bankruptcy auction sold DPMS to JJE Capital Holdings, which is owned by Jamin McCallum. JJE Capital's flagship brand and store is Palmetto State Armory brand in South Carolina.

John Roberts, chief legal officer at JJE Capital, confirmed the company acquired the DPMS name and intellectual property in 2020 and pointed out the firearm in question was likely manufactured and sold years before that change of ownership.

"JJE Capital did not manufacture or sell the firearm allegedly used and neither JJE Capital nor any of its affiliated entities own or have any direct or indirect affiliation with the manufacturer of that firearm," Roberts wrote to USA TODAY. "Like the rest of the nation, we condemn this senseless act of violence, and we are praying for President Trump, the other victims, and their families."

Weapon is banned in some states

Democrats in Colorado have attempted to ban semi-automatic rifles for years with a bill that lists a variety of AK and AR variants including: DPMS tactical rifles. The Illinois assault weapons ban also specifically calls out the DPMS rifles and, in July, the U.S. Supreme Court rejected a challenge to that ban.

Currently, 10 states and the District of Columbia ban some type of assault-style weapons. Others limit large-capacity magazines.

Palmetto State Armory and DPMS posted on social media recently that they had filed amicus briefs to the U.S. Supreme Court defending the use of bump stocks.

Gun violence prevention groups like Everytown groups on the Trump shooter's gun apparent tie to Palmetto State Armory this week.

“When the gun lobby and gun industry act with impunity, no one — not even the former president — is safe," said Nick Suplina, senior vice president of law and policy at Everytown. "Palmetto State Armory has admitted that its goal is to make assault weapons commonplace in America, even though we know that a ‘guns everywhere’ agenda puts our communities at risk, as demonstrated by the shooting at the Trump rally last weekend."

Experts speculate why shooter missed Trump

Webb, the Navy SEAL, speculated that the 5.56 x 45 mm NATO ammunition the shooter used was highly susceptible to variations in wind and humidity.

“If the shooter sighted in the rifle in the spring and shot in the summer, the bullet impact could be up or down, left or right by two to three inches because of the hotter temps and faster velocity of the round,” Webb said. “This may have saved Trump’s life.”

Guy McCardle, an Army veteran, suggested that a combination of poor marksmanship, nerves, heat and the prone firing position likely contributed to the shooter missing Trump .

“If the shot would have hit the former President in the temple area, the results would have most likely been fatal,” McCardle said. “Snipers, however, don’t tend to aim for the head because it’s a relatively small target that bobs around a lot. They shoot toward the center of mass as that is where most of our vital organs are located.”

3. Moscow Kremlin

Moscow Kremlin

This famously fortified complex is remarkably home to five palaces and four cathedrals and is the historic, political and spiritual center of the city. The Kremlin serves as the residence for the country’s president. It has been used as a fort, and this fact is made clear by its sheer size. The Kremlin’s outer walls were built in the late 1400s.

Under Ivan III, better known as Ivan the Great, the Kremlin became the center of a unified Russian state, and was extensively remodeled. Three of the Kremlin’s cathedrals date to his reign that lasted from 1462-1505. The Deposition Church and the Palace of Facets were also constructed during this time. The Ivan the Great Bell Tower was built in 1508. It is the tallest tower at the Kremlin with a height of 266 feet (81 meters).

Joseph Stalin removed many of the relics from the tsarist regimes. However, the Tsar Bell, the world’s largest bell, and the Tsar Cannon, the largest bombard by caliber in the world, are among the remaining items from that era. The Kremlin Armory is one of Moscow’s oldest museums as it was established more than 200 years ago. Its diamond collection is impressive.

The Kremlin’s gardens – Taynitsky, Grand Kremlin Public and Alexander – are beautiful. The Kremlin has also served as the religious center of the country, and there is a tremendous number of preserved churches and cathedrals here. The collections contained within the museums include more than 60,000 historical, cultural and artistic monuments. Those who enjoy the performing arts will want to consider attending a ballet or concert at the State Kremlin Palace. Completed in 1961, it is the only modern building in the Kremlin.

2. Red Square

Red Square

Lying at the heart of Moscow, Red Square is the most important and impressive square in the city. It is one of the most popular tourist attractions due to its wealth of historical sights and cultural landmarks.

Drenched in history, the huge square is home to incredible sights such as the Kremlin, St. Basil’s Cathedral and Lenin’s Mausoleum, among others. Consequently, it is not to be missed when in Moscow as it really is home to the city’s most stunning monuments.

It is here that many important moments in Russian history took place; the former marketplace has hosted everything from Tsar’s coronations and public ceremonies to rock concerts and Soviet military parades. Wandering around the massive square is a humbling experience and undoubtedly one of the highlights the city has to offer.

1. Saint Basil’s Cathedral

Saint Basil's Cathedral

Located in the impressive Red Square, St. Basil’s Cathedral is gorgeous; its delightful spires appear as if out of a fairytale. The most recognizable building in the country, the cathedral is very much a symbol of Russia. No visit to Moscow is complete without having taken in its unique and distinctive features.

Ivan the Terrible ordered the cathedral’s construction in the mid-16th century, and legend holds that Ivan put out the architect’s eyes so that he would be unable to build another cathedral more glorious than St. Basil’s. Designed to resemble the shape of a bonfire in full flame, the architecture is not only unique to the period in which it was built but to any subsequent period. For various reasons, both Napoleon and Stalin wanted to destroy the cathedral but fortunately did not succeed.

Known for its various colors, shapes and geometric patterns, St. Basil’s Cathedral houses nine different chapels that are all connected by a winding labyrinth of corridors and stairways. On the lower floor, St. Basil’s Chapel contains a silver casket bearing the body of St. Basil the Blessed.

Throughout the cathedral are many beautiful murals, frescoes, wooden icons and other art works and artifacts. Outside the cathedral is a lovely garden with the bronze Monument to Minin and Pozharsky, who rallied an all-volunteer Russian army against Polish invaders during a period of the late 16th century known as the Times of Troubles.

10 Best Places to Visit in Moscow

Moscow is one of the greatest cities in Europe. As the capital of Russia, it has great importance in the tourism market. This applies not only to religious tourists who want to visit one or more of its many monuments. Rather, it applies to a range of other tourists and travel enthusiasts who are keen on exploring the wonders of the city. If you are planning a trip to this wonderful city, then there are some spots which you must check out. Here is a list:

Kremlin and Red Square

Moscow and the Kremlin go hand in hand like Paris and the Eiffel Tower. This massive and picturesque complex now serves as the headquarters of the Russian government. Yet, it has not lost any of its artistic beauty and charm because of that. On its own, the Kremlin is a massive tourist attraction. But when you add the historic Red Square , the iconic St. Basil’s Cathedral and the Kremlin’s own armory, you get an irresistible tourist attraction which has something for everyone.

Of course, there are plenty of ways you can spend time around the Kremlin. These range from shopping at the GUM to spending time in Zaryadye Park . So, this place becomes one of the best and most diverse Moscow tourist draws on every tourist itinerary. This also means that the entire area around the Kremlin is always populated with countless tourists. If you are travelling with a group, then this spot is particularly delightful and offers the best chances for group selfies.

The Moscow Subway

When most people picture the underground subway systems and their train stations, they imagine boring grey tile, glass and metal. This would be true for most metro station systems around the world. However, the Moscow subway is a delightful step away from the aesthetics of modern muted architecture. Wander into any Moscow subway and you are likely to find yourself in an otherworldly place. The picturesque old-world feel and sensibilities of the Metro have an identity of their own. They were the most expensive project undertaken by the Soviet Government and were completed in 1935. Since then, they have been an architectural and aesthetical marvel.

The Moscow metro is arguably one of the most beautiful underground commuter’s networks in the world. The roofing is inlaid with beautiful images from the nation’s past set against a magnificent faded gold wall color. This makes for one of the most beatific scenes in all of Moscow and you can be forgiven for getting a little to snap-happy with the selfies here.

Peter the Great Statue Moscow

If Moscow has one iconic statue that towers in significance over others, then the Peter the Great Statue is it. Symbolizing the monumental life and works of Peter the Great, this statue is as stately as it is imposing. It stands taller than New York’s Statue of Liberty and has had Muscovites divided on its aesthetic beauty since it was first erected. Despite the polar views or passerbys, art critics and politicians alike, the statue has been a major tourist attraction.

Another great thing about the Peter the Great statue is that you can see it in many ways. While the statue is visible from land, you can also see it from the water and the air. Each one of these views can provide a unique, detailed and mesmerizing view of the statue. If you find yourself fascinated by the statue, then consider going for a boat or air ride. You will understand why this statue is one of the biggest Moscow tourists attractions on everyone’s list.

The VDNKh and Museum of Cosmonautics

Russia was the first country to send a person, Colonel Yuri Gagarin, into space. 70 years from then, the Museum of Cosmonautics keeps the legacy of that monumental moment and all subsequent space missions. You can find a wealth of information on space missions and their historic value as well as their impact on Russia as a whole. For those interested in outer space, the Cosmonautics Museum is a must-visit when in Moscow.

The museum itself is situated in the VDNKh or the Exhibition of National Economic Achievements . It offers many delights to visitors, many of whom are tourists, all year round. The VDNKh hosts regular trade shows and other commercial events. You can also find an agricultural fair, shopping mart and street market. There are many things to do here aside from marvelling the fine architecture of the VDNKh buildings themselves. These can range from paintball to camel rides depending on the ongoing event. This makes the VDHNKh centre one of the most popular local tourist attractions in Moscow .

The Novodevichy Convent

If you are an art lover, then the Novodevichy Convent will be a perfect place to visit for you. It was first established in the 16th and 17th century. Since then, it has been a monolith of Russian architectural marvellousness and achievement. The interiors of the convent are not less splendid and awe-inspiring. The hallways boast a rich décor which perfectly complements the plethora of paintings and artefacts it keeps on display. In total, the Novodevichy convent has above 12,000 items. These include old Russian paintings, items from precious metals and stones, fabrics from the 16th—20th centuries, liturgical items, and articles of clothing. These were made by celebrated artists and artisans in Russia’s past.

Aside from the stunning display items, the Convent also hosts the famous necropolis which contains the grave of the many Russian Tsars or kings. It also contains the graves of many other prominent Russians over the centuries and so, holds a prominent position in Russia. It is second only to the Kremlin necropolis.

Moscow Zoo and Planetarium

The Moscow zoo is one of the most iconic and historic locations in Russia . It holds the privilege of being among the oldest Zoological Parks in all of Europe. This gives it a prestigious status and among the most exquisite architecture in Zoological Parks . The first view of this architectural beauty is visible in the Zoo main entrance. Though it was erected in 1997, it perfectly complements the fairy-tale-like castles, towers and a waterfall. The zoo hosts an assortment of animals from big cats to a dolphinarium.

The Moscow Planetarium stands right along with the Zoo and has some marvellous sights for visitors. The Planetarium itself is a complex of smaller buildings including the Lunarium which hosts interactive exhibitions. Other major attractions here include the Museum of Urania, Sky Park and Big Star Hall. The Moscow Planetarium is also among the biggest in the world by sheer size. So, there is plenty to explore when you go there.

The Bolshoi Theatre

Another major tourist attraction close to the Kremlin, the famous and picturesque Theatre Square is a popular tourist attraction. These include the Bloshoi Theatre which sits next to the Maly Theatre and Russian Academic Youth Theatre (RAMT) . Out of these, the Bolshoi Theatre perhaps best represents Russia and its rich arts heritage. It has a high admittance costs which vary by the Ballet or Opera group playing there. However, the experience is one-of-a-kind and should enthral performative art lovers and theatre enthusiasts.

Once you are done taking in the fine arts, you can head over to the TsUM . This shopping centre sits a few steps away from the Bolshoi Theatre and has some of the finest shopping destinations in Moscow . Designer labels and premier products are available here for shoppers and luxury shopping enthusiasts can shop till they drop here. Finally, Theatre Square also has a Denis Simachev Bar which has some exquisite gastronomic delights.

Patriarshiye Prudy

The Patriashiye Prudy is a famous place to visit in Moscow . The name stands for Patriarch’s Pond and less attractively “ Goat Marsh ”. The location gets its name from a nearby goat farm. This site was host to the Russian Orthodox Church in 1683 and during that time, the marsh was drained to create a fishery. Several ponds were dug up to create the fishery spots.

Near to the now magnifique lake sit a number of bars and restaurants which rate among the best food spots in Moscow. The Mikhail Bulgakov Museum is another popular destination as it hosts exhibits to one of Russia’s most popular romantic novels Master and Margarita. Another sculpture inspired by Mikhail Bulgakov’s literary characters stands next to the pond.

Kolomenskoe Museum Reserve

The Kolomenskoe Museum-Reserve is a place of fascinating historical heritage dating back to the 8th century. The lands around this site abound with historical legends and fairy tales of every kind. Among the most religiously significant sites of this area include the Church of the Ascension of the Lord. This church was constructed by Tsar Vasily III between 1529 and 1532. Further, there are two other important churches in the park. These are the Church of the Icon of Our Lady of Kazan and Beheading of St John the Baptist. These three local attractions make Kolomenskoe Museum-Reserve a prime tourist spot for both religious and casual tourists .

The Gorky Park

The final tourist destination on our list stands apart from others by sheer difference. The Gorky Park was established in 1928 in honor of Maxim Gorky, the celebrated Russian novelist. The park received a facelift recently in 2011 and now covers a total land area of 109 hectares. An estimated 20,000 visitors spend time at the Gorky Park every day. For tourists, this spot is a nice break away from the other more imposing and immersive monuments we have listed here. Both solo travellers and groups, including families, can enjoy a lazy day here. There are plenty of places to take a casual stroll with fellow travellers or loved ones. You can also spend the afternoon at one of the many cafes and restaurants found at Gorky Park.

Scottsdale and Gilbert rank in top 10 cities for best places to rent. Here's why

Portrait of Catherine Reagor

Two metro Phoenix communities made a top 10 list for best places to rent based on the economy, apartments, traffic, air quality and amenities.

Scottsdale ranked No. 5, and Gilbert ranked No. 9 on a RentCafe list of the best places in the U.S. for renters, which included 20 key factors.

Phoenix ranked No. 72.

Scottsdale and Gilbert apartments average about 150 square feet more space than Phoenix apartments, which average 810 square feet.

The rental research firm found that more than 85% of the apartments in Scottsdale and Gilbert have “excellent amenities.”

RentCafe reports Phoenix’s unemployment rate is 5.2%, while the rate is about 3.5% in Gilbert and Scottsdale. The two cities also rank near the top for school quality.

Scottsdale doesn’t rank high for cost of living and housing costs, coming in at No. 34 out of 149 cities. It has the highest Valley rent at $1,600 for a one-bedroom, according to rental research firm Zumper.

Gilbert is much higher on the list of best places for renters, ranking No. 4 for cost of living and housing. The East Valley city has the third-highest metro Phoenix rent, with a one-bedroom averaging $1,540.

Both cities have apartment occupancy rates below 94%, about average for the Valley and U.S.

Scottsdale ranked seventh in the local economy category and eighth for quality of life.

Gilbert came in at No. 31 for its economy and 25th for quality of life.

Charleston, South Carolina, Atlanta and Sarasota, Florida, were the top three cities for renters.

What can parents do at the fair without their kids?

"Entertainment at the Ohio State Fair is family-friendly but can be enjoyed by fairgoers of all ages," said Jess West, public information officer for the Ohio Expo Center and Ohio State Fair.

"For example, there is live music at several stages across the grounds including the new Taste of Ohio Pavilion stage featuring daily acoustic acts. This is the perfect place to grab an Ohio brew or glass of Ohio wine and enjoy free live music."

West listed many other attractions adults can enjoy, including one of the largest art galleries in the state in the Cox Fine Arts Center. "This year, the show features 362 pieces, as well as a brand-new 'Tiny Art Show.' Each accepted artist has the opportunity to submit an additional piece of art (costing less than $250) to be featured in the Tiny Art Show," she said.

"Collecting art can be an expensive hobby; however, this is a great way to add beautiful, local pieces to a collection while on a budget."

How can kids stay safe at the fair?

"Safety is always the top priority of the Ohio State Fair. As state property and a state government agency, we are fortunate to have the expertise of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, which oversees the security on our property to ensure the safety of all guests," West explained.

She also said there are safety measures such as the Lost Kids Booth just inside the main Cardinal Gate and the OHIO Gate, where parents can fill out a sticker in case a child gets separated from their parent or guardian. Also, there are many air-conditioned spaces across the grounds to sit and cool down during hot days at the fair, including the infant care and station trailer in Kiddieland.

Will there be any road closures during the fair?

Several streets surrounding the Ohio Expo Center have been closed since July 11 for the Goodguys 26th Summit Racing Nationals and will remain closed throughout the Ohio State Fair. The following streets are closed:

  • 17th Avenue from Clara Street on the east to Dora Drive on the west
  • Velma Avenue between 17th and Maynard avenues
  • Silver Drive between 17th and 20th avenues

These streets are scheduled to reopen at 9 p.m. on Aug. 6.

Frontier Airlines Briefly Grounds All Flights Amid Microsoft Outage

A problem with Microsoft’s Azure system also hit check-in and booking systems at Allegiant and Sun Country Airlines.

Passenger aircraft at an airport

By Qasim Nauman

  • Published July 18, 2024 Updated July 19, 2024, 11:02 a.m. ET

Update: Flights and businesses are slowly recovering after a global technology outage .

Frontier Airlines briefly grounded all flights on Thursday amid a major outage in Microsoft networks, which also knocked out some computer systems at low-cost carriers Allegiant Air and Sun Country Airlines.

Microsoft said on the status page for Azure , its flagship cloud computing platform, that the problem began at 5:56 p.m. and affected multiple systems for customers in the central United States.

“Our systems are currently impacted by a Microsoft outage, which is also affecting other companies. During this time booking, check-in, access to your boarding pass, and some flights may be impacted,” Frontier said in a post on X .

The airline issued a ground stop for all its flights, according to a notice posted on the Federal Aviation Administration’s website. The ground stop was lifted about 35 minutes later.

Airlines sometimes issue these orders to temporarily halt flights because of technical issues.

Frontier did not specify how many flights and passengers have been affected so far. The Denver-based airline operates a fleet of more than 100 planes, according to its website .

The Microsoft outage hit at least two other airlines.

“One of our information vendors is experiencing a global outage affecting multiple airlines. As a result, some of our services are temporarily unavailable,” Sun Country said.

Allegiant said on X that customers may face problems with check-ins, bookings and issuing boarding passes.

Mass IT outage: here's a list of companies and operations affected

  • A huge global IT outage is disrupting flights, banks, retailers, and media outlets.
  • The widespread disruptions have been linked to an issue with the cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike.
  • Operations affected include airlines in the US and Europe, supermarkets, and some 911 lines.

Insider Today

A mass IT outage has hit flights, banks, retailers, and media outlets around the world.

The issues appear to be linked to the cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike .

Microsoft also acknowledged the issue in an X update early Friday, writing, "Our services are still seeing continuous improvements while we continue to take mitigation actions."

Here are some of the companies and operations affected.

Numerous airlines grounded flights early Friday morning, including the big three US carriers: United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and American Airlines. In statements, they all cited technology issues.

Delta and American had both canceled their ground stops by 7 a.m. ET.

A United spokesperson told Business Insider that it was holding all aircraft at their departure airports while it works to restore systems. "Flights already airborne are continuing to their destinations," they added.

American has blamed the issues on CrowdStrike, saying they were because of a "technical issue with Crowdstrike that is impacting multiple carriers," according to BBC News.

The budget airlines Frontier, Allegiant, and Spirit also issued ground stops which were later canceled.

Frontier's was issued on Thursday night. "Flight operations are currently being impacted by a major Microsoft technical outage," it said in a statement.

Spirit said it was unable to rebook affected customers because of the outage.

Disruption also extended to Europe. The continent's largest airline, Ryanair, advised passengers to arrive early as the outage caused "disruption across the network."

KLM also said it had to "largely suspend operations" as the outage made "flight handling impossible."

British Airways, Wizz Air, Turkish Airlines, Eurowings, Lufthansa, and Qantas were also among those who said they were affected.

According to a Facebook post from Alaska State Troopers , emergency lines in the state are also affected.

The post said: "Due to a nationwide technology-related outage, many 911 and non-emergency call centers are not working correctly across the State of Alaska."

"We appreciate your patience and will update you when we know more," the statement added.

The major UK airports Heathrow, Gatwick, and Luton have reported issues, with some warning of delays and disruption.

Related stories

An X post from Gatwick Express , a train service for the airport, said the company was unable to access driver diagrams at certain locations, "leading to potential short-notice cancelations, particularly on the Thameslink and Great Northern networks."

A spokesperson for Belfast International Airport confirmed to BI that whiteboards were being used to handwrite flight information before systems were later restored. Whiteboards were also used at Singapore Changi Airport.

Hospitals and doctors' surgeries

Several hospitals and doctors' practices appear to have been affected by the outage.

In the UK, the NHS' EMIS system, which doctors use to book appointments, view patient notes, order prescriptions, and make referrals, appears to be having issues .

A spokesperson for the NHS told BI in a statement: "The NHS is aware of a global IT outage and an issue with EMIS, an appointment and patient record system, which is causing disruption in the majority of GP practices."

They said that long-standing measures were in place to manage disruption and that there was no known impact on 999 or emergency services, so people should use these services as normal.

"Patients should attend appointments unless told otherwise and only contact their GP if it's urgent, and otherwise please use 111 online or call 111," they added.

Two German hospitals canceled elective operations scheduled for Friday, Reuters reported.

NYCT Subway

Commuters in New York City and DC may also face delays Friday morning.

In an X post, the NYCT subway said: "Train arrival information is unavailable for A/B/C/D/E/F/G/J/M/N/Q/R/Z/Rockaway Park Shuttle/Franklin Av Shuttle due to a worldwide technical outage. Train service is unaffected."

The post said the tech outage also impacted Subway officials' ability to see train locations.

Broadcasters

Sky News also appears to have been hit by the outage. The UK news channel has been showing archive footage and briefly displaying an error message.

The news site appears to be up and running at the time of writing.

London Stock Exchange

The London Stock Exchange's website was also experiencing issues.

"RNS news service is currently experiencing a third-party global technical issue, preventing news from being published on www.londonstockexchange.com ," the company said in a statement.

"Technical teams are working to restore the service. Other services across the group, including London Stock Exchange, continue to operate as normal," it continued.

Retailers and fast-food giants

Bloomberg reported that McDonald's Japan suspended about a third of its stores in the country on Friday. The issue was with the stores' cash registers, the report said.

The grocery-store chain Woolworths told BI that some stores had "been impacted as a result of the global IT issue." All but six stores were open for business, but some had fewer functioning checkouts.

Delivery delays

FedEx and UPS are warning of delivery delays because of the outage.

In a statement on the company's website , FedEx said it was experiencing "substantial disruptions throughout our networks due to a global IT outage experienced by a third-party software vendor." The company said parcels due to be delivered on Friday might face delays.

A UPS spokesperson told BI that it continues to operate effectively but there may be some service delays due to third-party outage "impacting some UPS computer systems in the U.S. and Europe."

Some US state driver services are down

Drivers in some states are unable to access services because of the outage.

Georgia's Department of Driver Services posted on X that "due to the global Microsoft/Crowdstrike outage, DDS services are unavailable at this time."

Tennessee's Department of Safety and Homeland Security said some Driver Services Centers may not be able to process transactions, according to a post on X.

North Carolina's Department of Motor Vehicles driver license and plate agencies are also impacted and unable to assist customers, according to a CNN report.

Bloomberg reported that at the Ocean Park Marriott in Hong Kong, staff were using pen and paper to check guests in and said the outage was affecting their systems globally.

Marriott International later told CNN in a statement that "certain hotel systems" have been affected.

"We are actively working with our vendors to resolve issues that have impacted certain hotel systems," the company said in a statement to the publication. "We apologize for any inconvenience that guests may experience."
