Christine Ohlman Headshot

Christine Ohlman

This queen of blue-eyed rock’n soul grew up loving equally the sweetness of a Memphis horn line and the raunch of an electric guitar riff. She’s the current, long-time vocalist with NBC’s Saturday Night Live Band, and her latest CD, The Deep End , was honored on five national Top Ten lists and features special guests/duet partners Ian Hunter, Dion DiMucci, and Marshall Crenshaw. Ohlman topped the Alternate Root’s Readers’ Poll as top Americana vocalist, joining other winners Paul Thorn, The Mavericks and Rodney Crowell.

Ohlman’s legendary voice and stage presence have most recently been featured at the 2019 AMA Conference in Nashville; The PBS series “Music City Roots” with Bonnie Bramlett, Sarah Potenza and the McCrary Sisters; 2016 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival’s Tribute To David Bowie; on numerous guest vocal slots on the HBO series “Vinyl” that feature a duet with Elvis Costello; on SNL’s 40th and 45th Anniversary telecasts (where she shared the stage with the B-52s); “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon” (guest slot with Black 47); the 2012 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Concert in Cleveland (filmed by HBO); and the Carnegie Hall tribute to the Rolling Stones; and as a headliner for the WC Handy Festival in Muscle Shoals, AL.  Her voice graces   Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon A Time in Hollywood” (in a guest-vocal turn on the Rolling Stones’ classic cut “Out of Time”).

In 2017, she was inducted into the National Blues Hall of Fame of American Heritage International,  and she recently took part in two days of filming in the Boston area with blues greats from around America for “Bonnie Blue” a filmed documentary on the late, great bluesman James Cotton. She appears on Grammy nominee’s  A Tribute To Howlin’ Wolf   (with Taj Mahal and Lucinda Williams) and Charlie Musselwhite’s   One Night In America   (with Marty Stuart); sings the theme song for NBC’s 30 Rock ; worked on a musical with the late Cy Coleman (who compared her sense of timing to Peggy Lee’s). A musicologist of note, Ohlman is a cover-story-writing contributor to Elmore Magazine, and worked with Bonnie Raitt, Ry Cooder & others on the Rhythm & Blues Foundation Awards.

Ohlman tours relentlessly with her band Rebel Montez , torching clubs up and down the Eastern Seaboard in support of her recordings:  Strip ,  The Hard Way ,  Radio Queen ,  Wicked Time , 2008 career retrospective  Re-Hive , the aforementioned  The Deep End , 2011 concert DVD  Live Hive , and 2021’s  The Grown-Up Thing .

Christine Ohlman doesn’t just perform. When she’s on a stage, she OWNS it, taking command of it with her soulful singing and stage presence. She’s an electrifying talent, a born entertainer. Watching Ohlman blaze away is a visceral musical thrill. Fans of vibrant rock and soul owe it to themselves to catch Ohlman and her band, Rebel Montez, when they appear at the Plantation Club. Mark J. Cadigan, Worcester Magazine

Cliff Goodwin , a native son of Worcester, MA, came up with legendary New England rock n’roll gods The American Standard Band, appearing on their self-titled LP. In 1976, he answered the call to become Joe Cocker’s lead guitarist, where he stayed until 1988, sharing the stage with Nicky Hopkins and Bobby Keyes; recording Luxury You Can Afford (Asylum), Cocker (Capitol), Live In Central Park (Casablanca), Standing Here , and Live in Montreaux ; and cementing his reputation as an musical director par excellence when he assumed that role for Cocker upon joining the band. Along the way, Cliff worked with John Mayall, Steve Miller, and Robert Palmer, appearing on Palmer’s Secrets , (and, again famously, on singles “Bad Case Of Loving You” and “Suspicion”), three Billboard Hot 100-charted singles with the New City Rockers, and the million-seller Twisted Christmas with The Bob Rivers Comedy Corporation. His 2018 solo CD, Rhythm & Blues Union , was recorded with an all-star cast and features guest performances by Jon Butcher, James Montgomery, Elliott Tuffin, Michael Lynch and Craig Rawding.

Michael Colbath started out a jazz freak, and in many ways it’s still his first love. But from the time he picked up his first bass to the present, his interest in music has been truly global. Mike got his start working out with R’n’B soul groups in Hartford’s North End and continued to cut his teeth on the Hartford scene with the Hibachi Brothers, a World Beat band, while at the same time playing with a succession of jazz combos. Known as “The Buddah of the Bass” for his unflappable Zen-trance stage presence, Colbath goes to the well of Duck Dunn, James Jamierson, and John Paul Jones for inspiration. He says, “Playing with Christine allows me to work on music in an original context, which is very gratifying to me as a musician.” Michael brings many influences to his playing style and bass lines and a spark that few can match when he straps on his axe.

Lorne Entress is a New England-based drummer/producer/engineer who joined the Rebel Montez family in 2019, and we welcome him.  On drums, Lorne has  toured or recorded with Big Al Anderson, Susan Tedeschi, Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer, Junior Wells, Freedy Johnston, Chris Collingwood (from Fountains of Wayne) and many others.  In the studio, he’s mixed records that include performances by Stephen Stills, Sheryl Crow, Tom Jones, Rosanne Cash, Ellis Paul and Betty Lavette, and produced albums for such diverse artists as Lori McKenna, Ronnie Earl, Mark Erelli, Diane Blue, and Catie Curtis.  Lorne also sings and plays guitar, hosting a monthly residency called The Sideman Series featuring renowned instrumentalists such as Duke Levine, Kevin Barry, and Marco Giovino. Lorne will release his first solo CD in 2021…watch for more details!!!

Christine and her gang put on an amazing show, and behind the scenes she is one of the best in the business to work with. I can’t do justice to all of her credits in this short a space; you should check out the full list on her website. You are in for a real treat. My hat is off to Christine, now and always. And I’m so glad she’s come back again to grace our stage. Brad Foster, Executive Director, 1794 Meetinghouse

What a journey of the heart this record has been. I’ve experienced, since the release of my last studio album Strip, the loss of both a mate (Doc Cavalier, who’d been our producer) and a long-time guitarist and collaborator (Eric Fletcher). It’s been tough, and sitting down at the writing table wasn’t always easy. Rosanne Cash and I were talking, and she asked me if I’d written sad songs. It wasn’t until she asked me that I realized I hadn’t. Ultimately, this is an album about love and the courage to fall into it. The fact is, the loss just informs you; it opens emotional doors that couldn’t possibly have opened before, no matter how much you thought you knew about it. I wrote about love--the newness of it, the glory of it, the loss of it, the constancy of it, the sadness that can come from it, the wonder of it, the sweet bitterness of it, sometimes. It’s my favorite topic, and never have I felt it so deeply and been so deeply affected by it.

The songs came over a period of about 10 months, the last being “The Gone Of You,” co-written by Cliff Goodwin. It turned out to be, along with the title track (with wonderful guitar work by Big Al Anderson), the album’s signature. We’ve included it twice, in a full studio version and then in a genius demo track that Andy York, who produced the record and was its most stalwart contributor, fashioned from voodoo loops and dark guitar. I sang it one late-night-into-early morning, so we dubbed it “The Gone of You (After Hours).” Yet it’s “The Deep End,” with its theme of jumping off a cliff, that owns my heart.

If the writing of the songs had been a joy, the recording process proved to be a total kick, spearheaded by sessions with the core band: Cliff Goodwin (guitar), Larry Donahue (drums) and Michael Colbath (bass) of Rebel Montez joined by Andy York. Then from Andy’s home studio to Vic Steffens’ cool Connecticut-based Horizon Music Group to Levon Helm’s place in Woodstock to Station West in Nashville, Lily’s Terrace and New Calcutta in NYC, and Sounds Great in Boca Raton, the guests artists had tracks flying, on fire together.

Ian Hunter whipped off his sunglasses in the June heat at Andy’s and dug into “There Ain’t No Cure.” To my delight, he’d also written the lyrics to “The Deep End” on a yellow legal pad and offered to add his voice there, too. Marshall Crenshaw and I romped on one of my all-time favorite “lost” Motown classics, Marvin Gaye & Mary Wells’ “What’s The Matter With You Baby” over at Levon’s studio, the great man himself on drums, his shoulders famously hunched in that beautiful way of his. Dion and I conferred by phone and, with Cat Russell’s help, crafted our vocal tracks--he in Florida and I in Connecticut-- for “Cry Baby Cry,” a treasured southern soul gem out of my vinyl collection originally done by the unsung duo Van & Titus. Dion had loved the track as much as I did when I’d first sent it to him. The guitarists on this record are, truly, an “A-team --from Rebel Montez’s current (Cliff) and once (Eric, to whose memory the CD is dedicated, appearing with me in a radio air shot of Link Wray’s “Walkin’ Down The Street Called Love”--if ever a title fit the theme, this is it) -- to G.E. Smith, Big Al Anderson, Eric “Roscoe” Ambel, Marshall Crenshaw, and Andy York. I am so deeply grateful to all the musicians whose hearts and souls are stamped on these tracks. They honor me with their presence.

It’s been a long and winding road, and in many respects I felt this was a journey I truly had to make by myself. That I’ve had great artists support me along the way has been a dream, and a gift. As I say in the liner notes, “There are so many who have stepped up with grace and love to help me get through these past years, to rejoice with me, to hold me while I cried, and to lift me up.” I have, indeed, been lifted, and now I look forward to sharing these songs with everyone. Let’s jump into the deep end.

Christine Ohlman on Re-Hive / October, 2008

I’ve always thought it a good idea to look back while you look ahead. The fans have their favorites on each of our four CDs, and I’ve got mine, but there’s so much other material, too—alternate takes, live cuts, unreleased tracks. It was fun choosing a few of those to sweeten the mix. The alternate version of “Circle ‘Round The Sun” was the biggest surprise to me. It’s such a kicker, and Eric Fletcher is just playing his heart out. We knew we had to include “Then God Created Woman,” and I thought, “Why not a live version?” So we found this great, lunge-at-it take from 2005 at Arlene Grocery, a well-loved Lower East Side NYC hang. “Charmaine” is classic late-eighties Rebel Montez, all edgy guitars, and I love the version of Percy Sledge’s “It Tears Me Up” from the time just before Larry Donahue joined us on drums, back when Michael, Eric and I were gigging around as a trio.

Of course Eric Fletcher’s death in 2006 was such a terrible shock. We had a sold-out concert on Memorial Day weekend and when he didn’t show, we knew something was very wrong. He was never even late for a gig. When the police called the venue that night to tell us they’d found him in bed, gone, there was a collective grieving, all of us together—the band and the audience—that still continues. These recordings are his legacy, as they are Doc Cavalier’s, our brilliant producer who was my mate of so many years. Doc left us in early 2005, and I mourn his loss every day. The four CDs we cut together were Doc’s babies as surely as they were mine. Re-Hive is dedicated to his memory. Our upcoming 2009 CD of new songs, The Deep End, will be dedicated to Eric’s. I feel I honor them both by creating, by writing, and by performing. It hasn’t been easy by any means. But friends and fellow musicians have been extraordinary in their generosity and support, and have lifted me up.

A joyous session in January of 2008 for movie soundtrack cuts yielded “Dimples” and “Killing Floor,” both of which feature the very great Cliff Goodwin on lead guitar; I’m delighted to include these tracks on Re-Hive. Cliff has been such a perfect addition to the band. He’s a guitar god, truly, and an inspiration on stage and in the studio. And that brings us up to the present…My thanks to the folks at HMG Records for their cool and ongoing support in making this CD possible. Hope you dig.

CD description:

HMG Records / HMG 1189 Release Date: November 18, 2008

Re-Hive, a retrospective of Christine Ohlman’s recordings with Rebel Montez (Larry Donahue - drums, Michael Colbath -bass, Eric Fletcher - lead guitar) pairs classic titles with bonus cuts, including alternate versions, previously unissued tracks (a bone-chilling, unplugged version of the Percy Sledge soul barnburner “It Tears Me Up,” for example, recorded in the early Nineties with the 3-piece incarnation of Rebel Montez often referred to as “The Amazing Drummer-less Trio”), and two brand-new studio recordings of Chess Chicago blues chestnuts that feature Cliff Goodwin on lead guitar (Goodwin, whose idea it was to title the disc “Re-Hive,” replaced Eric Fletcher following Fletcher’s untimely death in 2006).

Special guests include G.E. Smith (Bob Dylan/SNL/Hall & Oates); Charlie Giordano (Bruce Springsteen/E Street Band); Andy York (John Mellencamp); Brian Mitchell (Levon Helm, Rosanne Cash) and Leon Pendarvis (SNL).

Disc includes “The Hard Way,” featured on the Lifetime Channel’s original movie “Sex & Lies In Sin City.”

STRIP, Christine Ohlman & Rebel Montez

Available at the following:

Strip - (HMG 1177) The Beehive Queen returned with a vengence in 2003 on TNA Records (re-released in 2009 on HMG) with a more swamped-up sound. The killer grooves are courtesy of the flash cats of Rebel Montez (Eric Fletcher-lead guitar; Michael Colbath - bass; Larry Donahue - drums. Strip was the swan-song legacy of Fletcher, "The Blond God," who would pass away in 2006.)

Also on board are special guests Shawn Pelton (Sheryl Crow/Saturday Night Live Band); Andy York (John Mellencamp/Ian Hunter); Brian Mitchell (Al Green/Irma Thomas), Amanda Just (The Rivergods) and gospel-tinged trio The Sin Sisters.

Ohlman’s songwriting kicked up a notch with tracks like the sexy bossa-nova title cut, swamp-pop classic “The Storm,” “Empty,” a bare-bones tale of despair spun inside a gorgeous guitar-laden track, and “Another Country,” a saga of terrifying love wrapped around a pile-driving groove.

Included too are her usual cast of carefully chosen covers: “I Am Bound For The Promised Land,” straight from the Bristol sessions of 1927; “Daddy Rollin’ (In Your Arms)” a B-side originally recorded by Dion, that Prince of the Bronx himself; “Highway 61,” the blues classic rewritten with lyrics dedicated to Ohlman’s late friend Cub Koda; and a slice of savage Brit Invasion pop “I Can Only Give You Everything,” a steamy duet she shares with Joe Hurley of NYC’s Irish punksters Rogues’ March.

Strip is marked by Ohlman’s attention to arrangement and lyrics underscored by Fletcher, Donahue, and Colbath’s passionate, tight musicianship. The overall feeling of barely contained, overwhelming emotion pegs this as their best recorded work so far.

"Husky voiced tough gals seldom get any more fiery than Christine Ohlman. Like a female Bruce Springsteen or Southside Johnny, she uses her encyclopedic knowledge of soul, blues and swaggering leader-of-the-pack 60s girl group pop to texture her mini-dramas that exude a distinct urban sensibility." --Hal Horowitz, The All-Music Guide

The Beehive Queen Shares Her Thoughts on Strip:

There’s always a point when the first song takes shape and you get the feeling. I was reading James Baldwin’s “Another Country” and was taken by a sense of how much courage it takes to fall in love, to give oneself over so completely to another person. It’s a little terrifying, crossing over that border. I took Baldwin’s title and the journey began.

The other songs followed and, in a way, they all share the quality of nakedness. “Strip”, the title cut, is a word with multiple layers of meaning - there’s emotional stripping and then there’s the clothing kind... I love the way that track turned out, Eric’s snaky guitar line and the dirty drums, bass, and loops. “Empty” is for my late mother, although it’s not necessarily about her. I don’t claim to be able to write about what’s inside another person’s head. “Bound” is a story of long-time love, that delicious feeling of having the strands of your life entwined with someone else’s, twisting and turning and never letting go. My emotions have always been greatly affected by the weather, and I love nothing more than a hot, humid, lightning-on-the-horizon night…that’s how “The Storm” began. I also went for that feeling of the swamp (and the sound, with as much Fender vibrato as we could muster up) on “Love and Tenderness.” “Jungle Twist” is just a rave-up, destined to be an East Coast dance craze. “A Mighty, Mighty Man” was written years ago during the raw emotion of the war in Lebanon, and resurfaced after the events of the past two years. And “Tough and Tender” is maybe the most naked of all - a stripped-down track that frames a lover’s plea.

Choosing the covers was another kind of journey. I dedicated the entire CD to my friend, mentor, and musical brother Cub Koda, who passed in 2000. Cub would have played on this record were he still around with us in the flesh instead of in spirit. I’ve never known a ghost to play guitar, but if it were possible, I’m sure Cub would’ve figured out a way. He was a big fan of Alfred Luandrew, Sunnyland Slim, so “Highway 61” has tribute lyrics that I wrote for him. It’s true that Cub’s hometown, Detroit, isn’t on Highway 61 in reality—but in his heart, it was. Alfred Karnes’ version of “I Am Bound For The Promised Land” was cut originally at the Bristol Sessions in 1927, at the same time The Carter Family and Jimmie Rodgers made their first recordings. “Daddy Rollin’ (In Your Arms)” is a Dion B-side that was written down in Florida with his cousin. He put in some Robert Johnson lyrics. That fascinates me. You couldn’t ask for two more unlikely partners than the Prince Of The Bronx and the King Of The Delta Blues—but here they are. And “I Can Only Give You Everything” is an original British Invasion tune that my producer, Doc Cavalier, had first recorded back in the sixties with a garage band from Connecticut. I thought it would be cool to update it.

The demo recordings and final studio takes were all handled by the stellar musicians in Rebel Montez-—Eric Fletcher, Michael Colbath, and Larry Donahue. Eric played lots of axes from his collection, including a nylon-string on “Strip,” and made them all sound fabulous. We call Mike “The Buddha Of The Bass” - his bass lines are so thoughtful; they carry weight. Larry went to school on Al Jackson, Jr.; he’s the rock and the foundation. Through multiple changes and reworkings of some of the songs, their constant creativity and flexibility amazed me. These guys are flash cats, and the real deal. Through all four of our records together, they have supported the songs and stories with fire and skill.

Two friends who worked on both The Hard Way and Wicked Time came on board. Shawn Pelton, my brother from The Saturday Night Live Band, called me with the idea of generating some organic loops that we could mix in with Larry’s kit. He particularly wanted to work on “Empty,” “Strip” and “Daddy Rollin’,” and I think he came up with stunning work on all three. Shawn is such a master of rhythm and nuance that I hope we will record together forever. Andy York, who just got through playing on an album of delta blues with John Mellencamp, channeled Blind Willie Johnson on “Daddy Rollin’,” seconding Eric’s powerful acoustic. Together, they played some pretty apocryphal stuff. That’s AY doing his best Pop Staples on “Love and Tenderness” and killing with his acoustic on “Empty” and “Tough and Tender.”

Also joining us were Brian Mitchell, who brought the great New Orleans keyboard chops and fine-tuned sense of swing that have fueled records by Irma Thomas, Al Green, and Rosanne Cash to bear on “Another Country,” “The Storm,” “I Can Only Give You Everything,” and “Jungle Twist”; Amanda Just, whose soulful viola graces “Empty” and “Highway 61”; The Sin Sisters, who worked out with me in the vocal booth on “The Storm”; and my wild, beautiful friend Joe Hurley, who brought his whiskey-soaked voice and renegade attitude to our duet on “I Can Only Give You Everything.” All the performances are deeply emotional and real, and I’m forever grateful.

Finally, a word about the man behind the board - Doc Cavalier. Doc is just simply a great producer, with wide-open ears and a head for hits. He’s always looking for the hook, the sting, the edge... When he goes into the control room to mix, you know he’s out for blood and nothing else. He gets a sound on drums and bass that allows the whole track to ride on a big cushion, a big vibe. His treatment of guitars (and there are a LOT of ‘em on this record) is peerless. Check out the way he weaves them in and out on tracks like “Empty,” “Love and Tenderness” and “Daddy Rollin’ (In Your Arms).” I consider it a privilege to have had his knowledge and heart in my corner every step of the way.

WICKED TIME, Christine Ohlman & Rebel Montez (HMG 1176)

2000 saw the release of brand-new tunes on J-Bird Records, with favorites “Ring Of Flame;” “When I Work My Thing On You;” “Turn;” that good-love-gone-bad anthem that continues to tear it up on live dates, a barn-burning cover of Ike & Tina Turner’s “I Idolize You;” and the goin’-to-New-Orleans title cut. Re-released on HMG Records in 2009.

Originally released in 1995 on Deluge Records, Christine’s first recorded outing with Rebel Montez laid down the Beehive gauntlet with classics like “A Shot Of You,” “Then God Created Woman,” “Sugar Melts,” and “The Seventh Sons.” The title track got some major movie action in 2008’s “Sex & Lies In Sin City” starring Matthew Modine and Mina Suvari.

PAUL NELSON TRIBUTE & CELEBRATION OF LIFE WITH AN ALL-STAR LINEUP OF FRIENDS & SPECIAL GUESTS . EARLY SHOW

The Music Room is honored to announce an Epic Tribute & Celebration of Life to our fallen brother, partner, and fellow musician, Mr. Paul Nelson .  Due to a limited capacity The Music Room is offering an early evening show and a later evening show.  Paul passed away on March 10, 2024, but his legacy will live on.  Come celebrate with some of the greatest musicians in New England as we commemorate the life and times of Paul Nelson.

JOEY PAFUMI & LARS CHAPPELL (BANDMATES) . JAMES MONTGOMERY . CHRISTINE OHLMAN . PETER HARPER . CHARLIE FARREN . ANTHONY GERACI . WILLIE J. LAWS . MARCUS REZAK . PAUL LORANGER . RICO AMERO . GARY BACKSTROM . COUNTERFEIT CASH & More To-Be-Announced

WITH LOCAL HEROES! FUNKTAPUSS . SIOBHAN MAGNUS . GRAB BROTHERS . VANNA PACELLA . AMALIA VERVERIS & More To-Be-Announced

Anyone that new Paul on a personal level knows how his dry sense of humor was always front and center, and how hard he tried to make people feel comfortable.  On stage, in the crowd, on the street, or in the studio, Paul had a gift to gab with his stories of life on the road, mostly with fellow bluesman Johnny Winter .  This April 5, come and hear some of these stories told by friends and musical colleagues as well as watching live musical performances.  Paul would have wanted the celebration to be fun and lighthearted, and we aim to honor him in just that way.

There will be a second Memorial & Celebration of Life put on by the family on Saturday, April 6 at The Factory Underground, 16 Isaacs Street, Norwalk CT 06850, 10AM – 2PM.

Paul Nelson . October 18, 1960 – March 10, 2024 Paul Nelson was born in Manhattan, NY to Helene Lee Wilkins and Robert Nelson.  The family moved to Stamford, CT, which became Paul’s hometown.  After attending Berklee College of Music, and University of Bridgeport, his musical endeavors quickly expanded to include not only blues and jazz, but all genres of music and he continued and enjoyed studying until the very end.  His passion for education and mastering his craft was unsurpassed, and he loved sharing his knowledge by teaching as many and as much as he could.  His versatility, talent and loved personality, gave him the opportunity to work with a large number of other talented side-men and many renowned artists, and the friendships he established across all walks of life fueled his personal life as well as his passion for music.  He also released his own work, but chose to put his own career on hold when he met and became the manager for his childhood hero Johnny Winter.  Their deep rooted friendship changed both their lives for the better and molded not only their personal future but also what is now musical history.  Paul’s personal sacrifices to help a fellow musician and an individual he loved like a father, will forever be appreciated by fellow music lovers across the world.  Accolades include Grammy, Manager of the Year, several Blues Society recognitions and being inducted in to The Blues Hall of Fame.  Paul is survived by his wife of 27 years.

Why is there a difference in price for available seats at The Music Room?

All seating at The Music Room is acquired with a first come, first served basis approach.  The Music Room provides all patrons with a live musical experience above and beyond your average concert hall, and supporting this vision are the 4 tiers of available seats at The Music Room.  With a nod to classic record sales certification, the 4 tiers are:  Diamond, Double Platinum, Platinum, and Gold.  Seats range in price based on several factors including artist availability and distance to the stage.

Do you have the same number of seats for each tier?

No.  The Diamond tier of seats only has 12 seats available.  These seats are 4 top rounds located right at the foot of the stage.  You cannot get any closer to the artist than these 12 seats.  These are considered premium seats and are usually purchased by the most ardent fans.

The Double Platinum sections features 4 top square tables and one special 2 top rectangle, and there are 14 seats available.  Still very close to the stage, these seats provide an exceptional view and personal experience.  Table no. 7 is a 2 top rectangle that sits just to the right of the stage and back approximately 6 feet.  It is an extremely popular table.

The Platinum section of seats has a mixture of 4 top squares, two 3 high top rounds, and 9 drink rail seats that are bar height.  The total number of seats in the Platinum section is 37.  These are all excellent seats and reside in the main room.  Depending on a viewer’s personal taste, a table, a high top, or a drink rail might be the right choice, but they are all fabulous and unobstructed.

Gold seating is available in the bar area and can be considered first come, first serve general admission.  Most of the seats are unobstructed but depending how patrons sit at the bar or high tops, there might be a slight obstruction.   Standing room is permitted in the Gold section. The sound is excellent and most Gold level tickets are purchased by patrons that want to be near the bar specifically or by patrons wanting to be further away from the stage by design.  Please refer to our pictures to determine if this area is what you are looking for.  There are only several seats available and mostly Standing Room.

PLEASE READ OUR SEATING CHART EXPLANATION.  GOLD TICKETS OR GENERAL ADMISSION TICKETS (GA) HAVE LIMITED SEATING (FIRST-COME, FIRST SERVE IN THE BAR AREA) WITH THE REMAINDER STANDING ROOM ONLY.

*TICKET DISCLAIMER:  The Music Room has a NO REFUND POLICY.  In the event of a cancellation/reschedule, The Music Room will always honor the purchased ticket for the same seat and same artist at the original price.  If a show is cancelled and not rebooked, ticket holder will be issued a credit towards any future show/event at The Music Room.  Ticket holder assumes all risks, hazards, and dangers.  Event subject to change.  No ticket required for entry.  Please bring I.D*

Utopian Soviet Buildings

Utopian Soviet Buildings

  • The Palace of the Soviets instead of the Cathedral of the Christ the Saviour. It could have become one of the highest buildings in the world with a 100 m Lenin statue on the top.
  • The eighth Stalinist skyscraper instead of the Zaryadye Park. It was supposed to be the tallest of all the Sisters.
  • The Narkomtiazhprom (the People’s Commissariat of Heavy Industry) building instead of the GUM. How would the Red Square look like with three skyscrapers or gigantic staircases going all the way up to the 16th floor?
  • The Palace of Labour instead of the Moskva Hotel. What was it, kind of a fantastic beast lying on the square or an ultimate Constructivist manifesto?
  • The alternative Lenin’s Mausoleum, the “Leningradskaya Pravda” buildings and many others.

Testimonial

"A very enjoybale day in Moscow. We had a very nice and knowledgeable guide Anastasia.(Nastia) She was very passionate about the City and we learnt so much in our brief four hours walk with her! Certainly this walking tour added a lot of value to our Moscow Holiday. A great idea to educate visitors about Russia and Moscow. The group was intimate enough to ask questions and stop for snacks etc..we thoriughly enjoyed it and would highly reccomend it.Carry on doing a great job!"

"I really enjoyed the tour, it was a great experience, very informative and fun. I will definitely tell everybody about that tour, keep it it is a fantastic idea!"

"Sorry I do not remember the names :( ... They were very talkative and very into everything. I think they both really love the city, and they made me feel like this to. They knew much about History, which was very informative! Great guides!!!"

"We partook of the fantastic Petersburg Free Tour. Due to our timing during the low season (shockingly not everyone is flocking to Moscow while the average temperature is 15F), it ended up being just us and Sonia, the afore-mentioned super-guide. She quickly ascertained the limited scope of our wanderings.."

Customer

Just returned from a fanstastic and rich experience in moscow, the Golden cities and St. Petersbrg. We felt taken care of as if we were royalty! our guides were extremely knowledgable and so we learned so much and gained such an appciation for the people, the struggles and the country. Witout the guide and driver, we would have just appreciated the architecture but learned nothing. You helped at every turn - this could not have been a better experience and we cannot thank you enough.

I just want to inform you that we have completed our trip to Russia. We really enjoyed the arrangement you have made for us, from the airport transfer, picking up our Bolshoi tickets, the hotel in Moscow, and of course the Golden Ring tour itself. Our tour guide, Irina, provided us with a lot of information on the buildings and history, which make our following visits to Moscow+St. Petersburg more rewarding. Thanks again for making our visit to Russia a wonderful one.

The Golden Ring of Russia

The Golden Ring is a group of medieval towns and cities that form a ring to the northeast of Moscow. These towns played a significant role in early Russian history and in the formation of the Russian Orthodox Church. The towns are full of ancient Russian architecture from the Middle Ages including kremlins (walled fortresses), monasteries, cathedrals and churches. Visiting the Golden Ring will give you a chance to go back in time and imagine a Russia that used to be. The cities are associated with Russian Princes and knights, early Tsars such as Ivan the Terrible, the Mongol invasions and many other historical figures and events. Listening to the history and legends told by your experienced guide will evoke memories of storybooks and fairy tales. The towns of the Golden Ring are all in the Russian countryside which is beautiful – full of forests and fields and rivers and lakes. Apart from the Golden Ring, we also offer tours to the Silver Ring of Russia. These tours include such famous towns as Veliky Novgorod and Pskov. Your time in these ancient areas will be a great break from the bustle of Moscow and St. Petersburg. Walk along ancient Kremlin walls and see the onion domes rising from cathedrals where time has stopped, or follow paths along old riverbanks – travel back in time with our Golden Ring tours. An unforgettable adventure awaits.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

How far are the golden ring cities from moscow.

The Golden Ring cities are located within 2-4 hours drive of Moscow. The distance by road between Moscow and Suzdal is 219 km (3-4 hours drive), between Moscow and Sergiev Posad – 73 km, nearly a 2 hour drive. However, the distance between the cities of Golden Ring is rather short: e.g. between Vladimir and Suzdal it’s only 37 km.

Which cities of Golden Ring are worth visiting?

The following cities are the most well-known and attract the most attention: Suzdal, Vladimir and Sergiev Posad. If you have more than 1-2 days, we recommend Yaroslavl, Rostov Veliky and Kostroma.

Why do people call this group of cities the “Golden Ring”?

The cities of the Golden Ring, located northwest of Moscow, are spread out in a ring shape. The term was created in 1967 by historian and journalist Yuri Bychkov who wrote travel articles under the name “Golden Ring” because his route took the shape of a ring as he travelled through these cities.

How to get to the Golden Ring cities of Russia?

You can travel by train from Moscow to Vladimir, Sergiev Posad, Kostroma, Rostov Veliky and Yaroslavl. Alternatively, you can order a private tour and go by car with a private driver

What can I do while visiting the Golden Ring cities and towns?

Golden Ring cities and towns are very different from Moscow and St Petersburg. Instead of visiting art museums and ballet performances, you can enjoy exploring local Kremlins and fortresses, ancient churches and monasteries, listening to the church bells ringing, enjoying local foods and drinks, visiting banyas, spending time in pristine nature, and strolling along the Volga river.
