Free Maps and Travel Guides of All 50 States- The Ultimate Resource!

How to get free state maps and tourism guides.

If you’re like me, even though GPS has made it simple to navigate, I still love a good map. It’s imperative we teach our children how to use and read maps. Let’s face it- we need to know how to navigate in this technology-filled world with thousands of choices to be navigated each day. Think about all the analogies you can share and build character in your family and children from just learning to read a map!

Which (website, friend, way to go, verse, food, book to read, movie to watch, text to send, fill in the blank) one do I choose? Which way do I go?

I knew it was possible to contact each state tourism department to receive a free map, and you can also request state travel guides. Some states even have kid-specific activity guides, and I’ve even received  bumper stickers!

Have your kids do the research for an awesome homeschool lesson, supplemental geography lesson, or just use the maps yourself to help you get where you’re going! As the old Chinese proverb says,

If you don’t change direction, you’ll end up where you’re headed. Click To Tweet

Here is an alphabetical list of free state maps available from most state tourism departments. Just click the links and provide your information and address, and the maps will arrive directly to you! (The links at the end referenced dot  are for the department of transportation, in case you’d like an additional.) Enjoy the best FREE United States geography lesson you could ask for!

This map of United States is provided by Google Maps, whose primary purpose is to provide local street maps rather than a planetary view of the Earth. Within the context of local street searches, angles and compass directions are very important, as well as ensuring that distances in all directions are shown at the same scale.

The Mercator projection was developed as a sea travel navigation tool. It preserves angles. If you wish to go from United States to anywhere on the map, all you have to do is draw a line between the two points and measure the angle. If you head this compass direction, and keep going, you will reach your destination.

The Maphill difference

It's neither this road detailed map nor any other of the many millions of maps. The value of a map gallery is not determined by the number of pictures, but by the possibility to see the world from many different perspectives.

We unlock the value hidden in the geographic data. Thanks to automating the complex process of turning data into map graphics, we are able to create maps in higher quality, faster and cheaper than was possible before.

Forever free

We created Maphill to make the web a more beautiful place. Without you having to pay for it. Maphill maps are and will always be available for free.

Real Earth data

Do you think the maps are too beautiful not to be painted? No, this is not art. All detailed maps of United States are created based on real Earth data. This is how the world looks like.

Easy to use

This map is available in a common image format. You can copy, print or embed the map very easily. Just like any other image.

Different perspectives

The value of Maphill lies in the possibility to look at the same area from several perspectives. Maphill presents the map of United States in a wide variety of map types and styles.

Vector quality

We build each detailed map individually with regard to the characteristics of the map area and the chosen graphic style. Maps are assembled and kept in a high resolution vector format throughout the entire process of their creation.

Experience of discovering

Maphill maps will never be as detailed as Google maps or as precise as designed by professional cartographers. Our goal is different. We want to redefine the experience of discovering the world through the maps.

Fast anywhere

Maps are served from a large number of servers spread all over the world. Globally distributed map delivery network ensures low latency and fast loading times, no matter where on Earth you happen to be.

Where to Find Free State Maps for all 50 states

Are you looking for free state maps for your next road trip?I’m not talking about digital prints outs. I’m talking about the real deal.

No matter how much we all love technology, sometimes you need offline access. And when it comes to traveling, it’s extra important. Did you know that there are still areas of the county that do not have reliable phone signals ?

That’s why I always have a highway map in my car. When you are traveling through multiple states, you may want to consider an atlas. Did you know you can order Free State Maps instead?

How to get Free State Maps sent to you by Mail

Before your next trip to the U.S., make a list of all the states you’re planning on crossing through. Then visit the website of the tourism department you plan on visiting. Each state has a Travel Guide Section, that includes Road Maps!

Give them your address, and they’ll send you a guidebook and free highway maps.

My family took advantage of this on our way from Minnesota to Texas . It made planning our trip so much easier.

When States Don’t Mail Them?

Not all states mail out road maps and travel guides. I don’t blame them either, because they cost money and let’s face it, people love free things.

If the state map isn’t listed as an option on the travel guide page, request a guidebook. Sometimes they have maps hidden inside, or will package them together.

Get Free State Road Maps in Person

If you can’t get one sent to you, you’ll need to stop at a rest stop. They are located next to the main highways. The locations with the most information are the first rest stop when you cross the border .

You’ll usually be able to spot them in baskets, in displays or even on the walls.

This is a great way to get free maps when you don’t have time to request one online, like when we decided to do a last minute trip to New Orleans .

One time I was traveling on Christmas day and the building was shut down, but we spotten them on the wall. Even for the states that send maps, they still provide them inside.

Why I always travel with Free State Maps

Gps doesn’t always show you the best route.

GPS knows to show you the quickest way to get somewhere, but that’s not always best. Sometimes it takes you right into traffic or through sketchy areas.

On the computer, Google Maps will give you alternative routes if you want to avoid certain things. But on the mobile phone, it doesn’t give you that option.

That’s when we broke out our highway map and found a new city to point to, just to avoid one city. Sorry Dallas. It also gave us the chance to see more scenic roads we never would have known about.

Not all digital maps show you state lines

When fatigue sets in, sometimes you want to know how much longer until you reach the next milestone. That is where a state map is nice. It lets you see the big picture.

Physical maps are a great teaching tool for kids

This is a great opportunity to teach the kids to start learning about navigation. One of the best things my parents ever did was make sure I could read a map.

When I got out of high school, my sister and I used those maps to travel to the coast. In the age of cell phones, this skill gets overlooked.

Physical maps are perfect in remote areas with limited cellphone service

The biggest reason I have a road map in my car is that you don’t always have a connection. Sometimes you will be low in a valley or deep in the woods and the phone cannot help you.

Normally it’s fine because you are passing through. But if you are just getting started or your app crashes you’ll have to navigate yourself.

Traveling with your maps

Before leaving for your road trip, gather your maps and put them in an expandable pocket folder.

This is a great way to keep them in good condition while not in use, and easy to find when you are heading back home through the state.

Keep your maps safe while you travel and put them all in an expandable pocket folder. Small Accordion File Organizer

Tips for Using Maps

Familiarize yourself with the paper map before you begin your journey. Refer to the legend for symbol explanations and locate landmarks or points of interest.

It is crucial to consider the scale carefully. Check the scale of the map you are using to make sure you get accurate distances.

Teach children how to read maps. Show them how to find their starting point, destination, and any points they need to visit. Encourage them to look at the map regularly and to ask questions about the route.

Use the map to identify potential rest stops or places to eat along your route. This can be especially helpful if you are traveling with children or have specific dietary needs.

Consider using a highlighter or pen to mark your route on the map. This can help you to keep track of your progress and identify any areas you may need to revisit later.

Don’t be afraid to ask for directions if you get lost. Maps are great tools, but they are not always 100% accurate. If you don’t know where you are, ask locals or stop at a rest area or visitor center for help.

What else you can do with your maps?

After you are done with the trip, make sure to keep them someplace safe. We have a bin at home filled with them. Before each trip, we grab the ones we need and request any new ones.

I keep my maps for about 5 years. After that, you may want to refresh them for any new roads that have popped up.

If you don’t plan on visiting the state again, you can turn your old maps into fun crafts. I have turned them into magnates. There are many variations of Map Crafts .

I’ve managed to acquire an additional map of Minnesota for my wall. I attached it to a corkboard and started to pin every location I visited. You can do the same with Google Maps too, but it’s so much more fulfilling to do it with a physical pin.

Start Your Own Collection or Get an Atlas

What about having an atlas? This is a personal preference. If you really enjoy having everything in one place or are one of those people that have trouble folding maps, (no judgments) an Atlas might be a better choice for you. Otherwise, consider taking advantage of the free state maps for your trip planning.

Where can I find free state maps?

You can get FREE paper maps set to you by mail from your local tourism office website. You can also get free maps at highway rest stops.

Pick up an Atlas and keep all your maps in one place! Get one by clicking here.

13 Free Printable USA Travel Maps for your Bullet Journal – USA Map Coloring Pages

These free printable USA travel maps are great to use as a travel tracker in your bullet journal or planner. This map includes all the American states, including Hawaii and Alaska.

You’ve probably seen these beautiful bullet journal travel tracker maps before on Instagram, but as you can imagine hand drawing a map of United States is no easy task. Especially if you want to include the name of each state.

If you don’t feel up for this artistic challenge (totally understandable), I got you covered. You can simply print one of these beautiful free printable USA maps and add it to your bullet journal to keep track of the places you’ve been, places you want to go or your US travel itineraries for example. You can also use it as a coloring page for your children or yourself.

(This post contains affiliate links. For more information, see my  disclosures here. )

13 different Free Printable Bullet Journal USA Travel Maps Coloring Page

You can use this coloring map of America in different ways in your bullet journal, travel notebook or planner:

  • to color the states you’ve visited so far
  • to color the states you’d like to visit one day
  • to map out a road trip and add main points of interest: keep notes and memories
  • coloring page for yourself or your kids.

The name of each state is included on this map.

I’ve included 13 different printable United States Maps with different titles and sayings. Why 13? Simply because I’m always super indecisive when it comes to picking a design so I tend to go overboard and create many different ones. Since I couldn’t make up my mind, I’ve decided to share them all with you, so that you can pick whichever you like best.

I’ve also included a blank map so that you can add your own title.

  • United States of America
  • Always take the scenic route
  • Oh, the places I’ve been x2
  • Oh, the places we’ve been (family/couple) x2
  • Adventure is out there
  • Wanderlust definition
  • The world is too big to leave unexplored
  • Places I want to visit
  • Adventure awaits
  • I haven’t been everywhere but it’s on my list
  • Blank map – so that you can add your own title

I’m including 2 different sizes: A5 and US letter. But you can easily print them on a different size of paper by selecting a different paper size in your printing settings.

Difference between scaling and nonscaling patterns

What is this.

When you color a state with a pattern (dots, stripes, etc.), the pattern by default gets scaled (resized) to fit its size . You can change this to use nonscaling patterns that look the same on all states. Examples:

Scaling (default)

scaling patterns world map

What to choose?

It can depend on the map or the patterns/colors you select, but generally:

  • Scaling patterns (default) are better for maps with small subdivisions, like the detailed maps or the US counties map.
  • Scaling patterns (default) are better for zoomed in areas.
  • Nonscaling patterns can look better for maps with larger subdivisions, like the simple World map or the US states map.
  • Nonscaling patterns can look better when you have a small number of patterns in your map, as they stand out more.

In any case, you can switch this setting on/off as many times as you need to see the difference live on your map. More details on the blog .

Create an itinerary map to plan an upcoming trip

Our free travel mapping tool can be a great resource when you are planning your trips. If you are travelling to multiple cities and want to get an idea of which itineraries are going to be the most efficient, just map all your stops out and see what the route looks like. Once you have worked out the route, you can add notes and bookmarks to each stop to keep all your ideas in one place. Also, don't forget to tap into our amazingly helpful community of travellers by asking for trip advice in our forums .

Map out all your old trips

We spent a lot of time making this as easy to use as possible, especially when mapping out lots of stops and lots of trips. You can very quickly add new stops to trips with minimal detail. For example, you can choose to add dates to each stop. Or not. This mapping tool is flexible that way. Mapping out all your travels can be a huge amount of fun, as it's a great way to relive memories.

Add photos to your trips

Travellerspoint allows you to upload as many photos you want. And if you geotag them, you'll find they will automatically link to stops near where the photos were taken.

Embed your map on your blog

If you are just looking for a simple route map to add to a blog post you're creating then this will do that for you nicely. You can either use the standard embed code or customise the map tiles to various other looks as well. A beautiful interactive travel map will ensure your blog entry stands out from the crowd.

What time is the solar eclipse? Search your ZIP code for a viewing guide

Get ready for a spectacular show: A total solar eclipse will occur above the U.S. on the afternoon of April 8. Most Americans will be able to see it in some form, but the distance between your location and the path of totality will determine how much of the sun will be covered by the moon. Many places in the U.S. − Rochester, N.Y., Cleveland, and Austin, Texas, to name a few − will see a total eclipse, in which the sun is completely obscured. Other locations will see a partial eclipse. Search for your ZIP code below or select a major city to reveal the time, duration, peak and percentage of the eclipse in your area.

When is the eclipse?

On April 8 the moon will travel along the path of totality in North America starting in northern Mexico. The shadow of the moon will pass into Texas a little before 1:30 p.m. local time. It will then cover portions of the Midwest and East Coast and touch southeast Canada before it moves out to sea, according to NASA .

Are free eclipse glasses safe? How can I view the eclipse safely without glasses?

If you buy or are given eclipse glasses, be sure they are made by companies the  American Astronomical Society  and NASA have certified as safe. Eclipse glasses should all have the "ISO" (International Organization for Standardization) icon. The glasses also must have the  ISO reference number 12312-2 .

If you cannot find certified glasses, there are other ways to view the eclipse, including with a shadow box you can make yourself. Whatever you do, don't look at the sun without proper protection.

How does an eclipse work? How often do eclipses occur? Where can I learn more about the science?

A total eclipse occurs when the moon appears the same size as the sun and blocks the entire disk, leading to a period of darkness lasting several minutes. The resulting "totality," when observers can see the outermost layer of the sun's atmosphere, known as the corona, confuses animals – nocturnal creatures stir, and bird and insects fall silent.
