Con Dao Vietnam

Con Dao, Vietnam

Con Dao is often overlooked as a beach destination in  Vietnam , and I almost don’t want to share it so it stays that way! Located off the Southern Coast of Vietnam, Con Dao is a smaller island with very little commercial development. With this, the beaches are quiet and the few resort options allow for a special retreat. The beaches are long with soft sand and are great for light water sports like SUP and kayaking—but are just a short kayak away from a beautiful reef for snorkeling. The downtown area has a cute seaside atmosphere with little restaurants, and there are connections to history if you’re interested in exploring more.

Best things to do:  Watch the turtles hatch: On the neighboring island, you can head over at night and stay at the ranger station where you will be informed when they spot a mother turtle laying her eggs. If you’re there in August, it’s likely you’ll catch this magical experience. Stay through the morning when the turtle sanctuary supports the release of the hatchlings and watch them find their way to the big blue sea.

If you’re interested in history, I recommend a visit to the Con Dao Prison which was built during the French colonial era and used through the Vietnam-American War.

How to get there:  From Saigon, take a commercial flight to the island. The flight is about one hour long and Vietnam Airlines runs multiple flights a day.

For travelers looking to get off the beaten path look no further than Hawaiis smallest inhabited island—Lanai. Only nine...

Lanai, Hawaii

For travelers looking to get off the beaten path, look no further than Hawaii’s smallest inhabited island—Lanai. Only nine miles off the coast of Maui , this quaint island was originally home to pineapple plantations but now offers the perfect mix of rugged adventure and ultra-luxe relaxation. Arrival to the island is an experience in and of itself, whether you take a scenic 30-minute flight from Honolulu or watch for dolphins on a 45-minute ferry from Maui.

On arrival, expect a swift transfer to your hotel, either the ocean-side paradise of the  Four Seasons Resort Lanai or the adults-only wellness retreat at the  Sensei Lanai, A Four Seasons Resort . From there, you can fill your days as you wish, from relaxing on quiet beaches to exploring the island by boat, 4-by-4 Jeeps, or even horseback—though we definitely recommend a quick jaunt through the “bustling” Lanai City, with only three paved roads and no traffic lights.

Best things to do:  Go horseback riding along wooded valleys and trails, keeping an eye out for axis deer, turkeys, and sheep. Take a tour of the island (with a packed picnic!), or snorkel in the protected marine reserve of Hulopoe Bay to see tropical fish, sea turtles, and reef sharks. Be sure to also visit Keahiakawelo, Lanai’s “Garden of the Gods,” to see the unique, lunar-like landscapes.

How to get there: Lanai Air offers 30-minute nonstop flights from Honolulu to the island, or you can take a 45-minute ferry over from Lahaina, Maui.

Mauritius

Mauritius is a fantastic island destination for honeymooners, couples, friends, families with children, and even solo travelers —really anyone looking for beautiful, warm tropical weather and lots of adventurous things to see and experience. Because of the reef that surrounds most of the island, Mauritius offers calm waters, ideal for swimming and snorkeling straight from the shore. The west coast offers the best beaches, the most magical sunsets, and the calmest water conditions. The diving in Mauritius is really enjoyable, with a number of reefs and wrecks to enjoy.

Best things to do:  A few of my favorite things to do in Mauritius, aside from scuba diving and sipping cocktails on the beach, would include swimming with dolphins and turtles, full-day catamaran cruises around the island, and snorkeling at reefs off the coast.

How to get there: There are direct commercial flights from South Africa—most days from Johannesburg and seasonally from Cape Town —making it an easy combination with a South Africa safari or Cape Town city experience. There are also direct flights from Nairobi, which makes it easy to combine after an East Africa safari. There are also direct flights from a number of European hubs such as France, London, Frankfurt, etc, as well as Dubai. Flights are directly into Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (MRU), and then you will take a taxi/cab, shuttle, or private road transfer to your respective resort, roughly 1-2 hours from the airport.

Mallorca Spain

Mallorca, Spain

The Balearic Islands are one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe, and Mallorca , which is the third largest island in Spain, is once again on the rise, receiving quality tourism. There are many reasons to visit Mallorca, such as the beauty of the natural environment and the culture that has been preserved there for centuries. Mallorca is as much for those who seek rest as for those who like adventure or history—a very complete island that brings together nature, incredible beaches and coves, city sightseeing, gastronomy, and cultural options.

Best things to do:  Mallorca is known for its wide variety of landscapes and coastlines with impressive cliffs. On your visit, you cannot miss the Serra de Tramuntana region, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in the northwest of the island, where there are some of the most beautiful Majorcan villages such as Valldemossa, Deià, Sóller, and Fornalutx. You can sail, paint a picture by the coast, visit a winery and taste its wines, and meet locals while staying in this area for a few days.

How to get there: You can take a direct flight from Barcelona , Madrid, and other cities in Europe, or you can take a ferry from Barcelona or Valencia.

Koh Samui Thailand

Koh Samui, Thailand

No Thailand trip is complete without a stay on one of the country’s islands, since they boast some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Koh Samui is particularly wonderful as it offers a nice blend of gorgeous beaches, an array of fantastic resorts, and easy exploration on your own.  Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui does everything right and is a reason to visit alone—it offers well-appointed rooms with beautiful views, beyond exceptional service, fun activities for all ages (try Muay Thai boxing with a former pro in Four Seasons’ own boxing ring with tropical views), a wonderful spa, and delicious food.

Best things to do:  Spend a few hours (preferably at sunset) sailing around Koh Samui and nearby islands with Blue Voyage . Their exceptional yachts and staff will ensure you have a fabulous time while marveling at the scenery. Experience even more of the beauty of Thailand’s islands by stopping for a picnic on a secluded, private beach.

How to get there: Koh Samui is one of the easiest Thailand islands to reach as you can take a 1-hour flight from Bangkok or a 2-hour flight from Singapore.  If you are exploring Northern Thailand prior to visiting the islands, you can take a 1-hour 45-minute flight from Chiang Mai to Koh Samui.

Tofino Vancouver Island Canada

Vancouver Island, Canada

Vancouver Island is home to the charming small city of Victoria, the capital of British Columbia, known in particular for its British influence and flower gardens (including the famous Butchart Gardens about 30 minutes from the city). Many people don’t realize, however, that Victoria is at the southern tip of the island and that the island is nearly 300 miles long. There’s far more to Vancouver Island than Victoria. One of my favorite places on the island is Tofino , a small town on the far west coast about halfway up the island that’s a great destination for outdoor adventures with fantastic food and lodging.

Best things to do: Whale watching for orcas from Victoria, and for gray whales and humpbacks from Tofino. There’s also bear watching (black bears from Tofino and brown bears/grizzlies from the Campbell River area on the northeast part of the island).

How to get there: Take a flight from Vancouver or Seattle depending on the part of Vancouver Island you’re going to, or by ferry from Vancouver or Port Angeles Washington.

Zanzibar

Zanzibar is a really special island off the coast of Tanzania, known as Spice Island (and where Freddie Mercury was born). It is rich in history and culture, and it offers beautiful white sandy beaches and warm tropical weather. There are parts of the island that are quite tidal, meaning that the ocean goes out far for a period of the day, making it a great time to explore the animal life left behind in the rock pools. If you want to avoid the tides, the north coast is the least affected and has the best beaches. There is also a really stunning resort off the coast of Zanzibar called Mnemba Island, which is home to  Mnemba Island Lodge , a very exclusive resort, and has some of the best diving nearby.

Best things to do:  Stone Town tours and rooftop dinners, swimming with turtles, sunset show cruises, exploring Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park, and diving.

How to get there: There are direct flights from Nairobi and Tanzania, as well as some European countries and Dubai. Flights go directly into Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ), and then you will take a taxi, shuttle, or private road transfer to your respective resort, roughly 1-2 hours from the airport.

Andaman and Nicobar Islands India

Andaman and Nicobar Islands, India

Of the 572 islands in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands territory, only 38 are inhabited and 26 open to visitors—and for decades, the atoll’s remoteness and lack of infrastructure, but abundance of coral reefs, have attracted serious divers, adventurous backpackers, and intrepid A-listers like Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet.

Still, hundreds of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are completely unpopulated. Its remoteness was once its purpose: For decades, the British used the Andaman Islands (namely Port Blair) as an inescapable prison for freedom fighters up until independence. Today, visitors can find white sand beaches (including Radhanagar Beach on Havelock Island, regularly named one of Asia’s best), mangroves, and lush tropical rainforests.

Best things to do: Named after the jagged, black rocks strewn along the coastline, Kalapathar Beach offers an isolated destination for trekking amongst exposed root tangles of 100-year-old trees and aged driftwood carved into captivating designs by the aftereffects of a tsunami, creating a unique, moorish landscape dotted with shells. After the trek, the Kalapathar lagoon just before Butler Bay offers a beautiful secluded spot for swimming and great ocean views through a cave in the cliff face.

In the capital city of Port Blair, Cellular Jail is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and tourism mascot. A former British prison, Cellular Jail National was something like a holy place for the freedom fighters, who exchanged books, ideas, and debates despite walls and wardens. The Light and Sound Show in the evening is a must-see.

How to get there: Fly into the main airport at Port Blair, which is well-connected on a non-stop service stop from Delhi, Chennai, and Kolkata. (Note: If you were to fly out of Mumbai, the best course is to fly into Kolkata first and take a connecting flight to Port Blair.) From Port Blair Airport, it’s a 20-minute drive to the Ferry Terminal and a 90-minute ferry ride to Havelock Island.

Nevis

So often I hear people talk about how  Caribbean islands are devoid of history. They most certainly are not—and thankfully, much of its complicated history is starting to be talked about and will hopefully pave the way for more concerted historical landmarks in the future. But while many islands have focused more on blue water and white sand than their historical pasts, Nevis provides the cultural richness some travelers are looking for, with its restaurants and colorful past as a once-bustling Caribbean hub. (If you’re reading this and don't already know Alexander Hamilton was born here, you’re likely in the minority.)

It’s the Goldilocks of the Caribbean: easy to get to (see below), but still enough of a trip to keep the nonstop-flight-only masses away. It has beautiful beaches, while offering a safe environment to eat in off-property restaurants and explore the island outside of the resort. It feels off the beaten path, yet is home to true luxury resorts and charming hotels. (While Nisbet Plantation closed permanently during the pandemic, the  Golden Rock Inn is another boutique gem, and the luxurious  Four Seasons Resort Nevis offers activities for everyone.)

Best things to do: Take a historical tour by taxi around the island—there are several taxi driver-guides that do this, and they will become your best friends over the course of the morning! (Your hotel concierge can help set this up.) Explore the jungle (and Nevis’s voluminous monkey population) in an ATV tour, or charter a sailboat for the day to explore the wildlife by water and experience some of the Caribbean’s famous winds.

How to get there: Nonstop flights fly in season from most East Coast hubs to St. Kitts. After that, a short taxi ride will take you to the water taxi, which typically arrives on Nevis in less than 10 minutes.

Tikehau French Polynesia

Tikehau, French Polynesia

Tikehau is a hidden gem within French Polynesia . Its remoteness means you’ll be close to nature and raw, undisturbed beaches—think crystal clear waters with an abundance of fish and coral reefs, which you can enjoy from an overwater bungalow. Pristine, beautiful pink sand beaches make it ideal for enjoying the sun or watching the perfect sunsets. Book a stay at  Le Tikehau by Pearl Resorts (highly recommended), where the pastry chef has mastered French cuisine, from perfect croissants to preparing fish you caught earlier that day.

Best things to do:   Snorkeling and diving are the focus here, given the vast number of fish, untouched corals, and vibrant clams, along with the chance to swim amongst the sharks. Another popular activity is kayaking around the atoll into small bays to explore.

How to get there:  From the U.S., fly to Papeete on the island of Tahiti; from there, use the inter-island flights through Air Tahiti. This may require an overnight stay before catching a flight to Tikehau, followed by a short boat ride to your resort of choice .

Galpagos Islands Ecuador

Galápagos Islands, Ecuador

People visit the Galápagos Islands mostly for the incredible wildlife viewing, including endemic species such as the blue-footed boobie, Galápagos penguin, marine iguanas, flamingos, sea lions, and many more. The Galápagos marine reserve is one of the largest and most bio-diverse in the world, making for exceptional diving and snorkeling. This unique archipelago was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978 and consists of 18 islands and more than 100 small islets, located approximately 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador in the Pacific Ocean.

Best things to do: There is so much to explore in the Galápagos Islands, especially for nature lovers, photographers, and adventure seekers . The best way to see the Galápagos is via sea, visiting all of the diverse islands in the archipelago. Hiking Isla Bartolome will feel like you landed on Mars. This volcanic moonscape is home to Galápagos hawks, blue-footed boobies, and lava lizards. You can also snorkel among sea lions, flightless cormorants, sea turtles, and—our favorite—the Galápagos penguins.

Visit Floreana’s Post Office Bay to participate in a tradition dating back to the 1800s where sailors would leave mail to be retrieved and delivered by another sailor passing through. Today you can do the same by leaving your own postcard and retrieving another postcard for delivery back home. Another exciting adventure is visiting the Highlands of Santa Cruz, where you will experience the high-altitude microclimates where the giant tortoise lives before preparing for their long migration to the shorelines.

How to get there: There are no direct flights into the Galápagos from U.S. or Europe. You’ll need to fly from mainland Ecuador—either Quito (UIO) or Guayaquil (GYE)—to the islands. Most people fly into San Cristóbal Airport (SCY) or Seymour Airport (GPS), which serves the island of Baltra and connects to Santa Cruz via water taxi.

Vega Island Norway

Vega Island, Norway

Vega Island is located a few miles south of the Arctic Circle, just off the coast of Helgeland in Norway . You should visit because of its amazing natural beauty, wildlife, wide variety of cool activities, and unique cultural heritage. Vega is part of an unbelievably large archipelago with thousands of small islands, and it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2004.

Best things to do: Sea-kayaking, fishing, hiking, and visiting the unique island community that produces pillows and duvets from the down given by wild eider ducks.

How to get there: First you fly from Oslo to Brønnøysund Airport at Helgeland. From there, you drive to Horn and take a car ferry to Vega.

Big Island Hawaii

Big Island, Hawaii

The island of Hawaii, also known as the Big Island , offers a staggering amount of diversity in one destination, making it perfect for travelers that want to have a wide range of experiences. Relax on the white sands of Hapuna Bay or marvel at the jet-black hue of Punalu’u Beach . Feel the heat off the Kilauea Volcano or bundle up to summit snow-capped Mauna Kea. Go off the grid and hike the lush valleys of the Hilo coast or head to the well-known coffee plantations outside of Kona. No matter your interest, there’s an activity to suit your style on the Big Island.

Best things to do: Go snorkeling (or diving) at night with the manta rays, swim in waterfalls in North Kohala, or stargaze at the top of Mauna Kea—one of the best places for stargazing in the world. Also visit Hawaii Volcanoes National Park to see the lava tubes, volcanic formations, and steam vents.

How to get there: Flights from the continental U.S. can go directly into Kona, or take a 45-minute flight over from Honolulu.

Lord Howe Island Australia

Lord Howe Island, Australia

This tiny World Heritage-listed island (just over 5 miles long and less than 1 mile at its widest part) packs a real punch, offering a spectacular diversity of landscapes and activities: two towering mountains to hike and dozens of beaches to explore (from the tranquil sheltered lagoon to the uncrowded waves of Blinky’s surf beach), lush rainforests home to spectacular birdlife, and turquoise waters teeming with vibrant marine life and colorful coral reefs. Lord Howe Island ’s natural treasures and adventures are complemented by a collection of luxury stays and a laidback Australian coastal lifestyle that invites indulgence and relaxation—but only for an in-the-know privileged few. The island has a cap of just 400 visitors (and a permanent population of less than that) at any one time. Paradise found!

Best things to do: While the temptation may be to simply slip into the private plunge pool on the balcony of your  luxury lodge accommodation or lose yourself in the pages of a good book in the shade of the kentia palms at your private island house, visitors to Lord Howe Island are spoiled for choice with activities that explore the island’s many natural treasures: snorkeling or scuba diving, hiking or biking (the island’s main mode of transport), swimming or surfing, SUP-ing, kayaking, golfing, stargazing, birdwatching, or fishing—just to kick off the list. Visitors should not miss the opportunity to hand-feed the fish at Ned’s Beach, scout for turtles at Settlement Beach, picnic on a secluded beach, or mingle with the locals at a “fish fry.”

How to get there: Located approximately 435 miles northwest of  Sydney , daily direct scheduled flights from Sydney are the easiest way to access the island (less than a 2-hour flight time). Private charter flights can also be arranged.

— Stuart Rigg , Owner/Director of   Southern Crossings

Dominica Batibou Beach

Thanks to easy air access, St. Lucia has long been known as the lush, adventurous capital of the Caribbean. But Dominica provides the same connection with nature, with a slightly more undiscovered slant . The “Nature Island” isn’t for people who want to walk for miles on white, sandy beaches—as a volcanic island, many of the beaches have a darker hue. The tradeoff of islands with powdery beaches for miles is that often there is a risk of being bored on the beach—not here!

Best things to do: Incorporate a series of hikes into your trip—there are many trails from easy to strenuous with incredible views, often with the gift of a waterfall. Dominica is also a great place for snorkeling and scuba diving. If you’re not certified, you can take your classwork prior to your vacation and complete your certifications on the island. Champagne Reef is a favorite—it gets its name from the bubbling waters that come up from the underwater thermal springs.

How to get there: For years (COVID didn’t help) it was quite difficult to get to Dominica in one day from the U.S., but starting in early April, there will be a direct American Airlines flight from Miami daily, which opens up this island to a host of new adventurers.

2. Crete Greece

Crete, Greece

Crete has the best of everything: pink sand beaches, ancient history, natural beauty, and charming harbor towns. It is the largest and most southern island of Greece, so the weather and water are warmer before and after the summer season. Crete has maintained its own identity. It has a different cuisine, dialect, and traditions. It is one of my favorite places in the world.

Best things to do: The charming harbor town of Rethymnon is a medieval walled city full of interesting handicraft shops and traditional restaurants. AVLI is a boutique property consisting of several apartments that have been converted into a hotel. There is also a natural food store in the hotel that offers several types of olive oil and honey raki. The restaurant is a courtyard with 10 tables offering the freshest ingredients and cooking classes by the owner of AVLI, Katina.

You can drive to Crete’s other must-visit sites in under two hours. Visit the uninhabited island of Spinalonga, the pink sand beach of Elafonisi, the Cove of Balos, and the Samaria Gorge—one of the deepest and longest canyons in Europe.

How to get there: Take a direct flight to Crete from Athens, or take the year-round ferry from Piraeus or the seasonal, summer ferry from Santorini.

Iceland is a hotbed of volcanic activity formed by superheated lava and molten rock from countless eruptions over millions of years. When the lava stops flowing, the top crust cools more quickly, leaving hollow caves and tunnels behind. You can explore these incredible underground spaces when our Silver Circle tours visit The Cave at Víðgelmir in West Iceland. Enjoy a 90-minute expedition on well-lit walkways with expert guides and learn about stalagmites and stalactites in colorful caverns. Viking outlaws used these places as hideouts – now you can explore here too!

Tour the Golden Circle to see the glittering jewels in Iceland’s crown. In one convenient day trip from the capital, you’ll see the magnificent Gullfoss waterfall, the geothermal wonders of Geysir , and the spectacular rift valley at Þingvellir National Park . The Golden Circle offers you the best of Iceland’s natural beauty and history, where you can walk in Viking footsteps between two continents! Close to the Arctic Circle and just 300 miles wide, Iceland is the perfect place to explore glaciers and ice caps. These frozen blue wonders can be seen easily as you explore Iceland on our Ring Road tours . That’s because outlet glaciers and glacier tongues reach down from  Sólheimajökull on the South Coast and from Vatnajökull in the East right down to the coast, making it easy to get up close to these majestic sights. Centuries of snow and ice have created these incredible glaciers, but they are retreating now due to climate change. Don’t miss your chance to see these marvels while you can!

Glacier Hike

Experience an adventure like no other on a Glacier Hike tour

Did you know that a tenth of Iceland is covered in glaciers and that 269 of them have been named? Iceland is the ideal place to come if you want to explore these natural wonders at close quarters. That’s because our South Coast tours visit Sólheimajökull in South Iceland, where you can strap on crampons and take an unforgettable stroll across this ever-changing environment. Iceland is a country filled with incredible water features, including hot springs, waterfalls, and glacial rivers. But did you know that the word “geyser” comes from here? On our Golden Circle tours , you’ll see the “OG” of geysers everywhere at the Haukadalur Geothermal area. While Geysir has fallen silent recently, nearby Strokkur erupts in steam explosions and spray every few minutes, sending superheated water flying high into the sky. Geysir means “gush” in Icelandic, and that’s where the name comes from! If you book a package with stay in Hveragerði you can also admire smaller cousin of Strokkur that erupts every 15-20 minutes.

Geothermal Areas

Discover Iceland’s active geothermal areas on our tours

Iceland’s fiery volcanic origins mean it’s a hothouse of geothermal activity with several colorful geothermal areas you can explore on our tours. The Blue Lagoon is the most famous, close to the airport, and you can visit the Haukadalur Geothermal Area on our Golden Circle tours . On our Silver Circle tours , you can see the most powerful hot spring in Europe at Deildartunguhver . And if you choose one of our Ring Road tours , you’ll see the almost alien landscapes at Hverir , where fumaroles fizz and hot pools bubble and boil! Feel the ground tremble and smell the sulfur!

Iceland is a “country in the making” formed by volcanoes and earthquakes and sculpted by gigantic glaciers.

That offers you a variety of breathtaking and unique landscapes, such as Stuðlagil and Fjaðrárgljúfur , two of the most stunning places in Iceland! At Stuðlagil, you’ll see twisting basalt columns line a gorgeous glacial river canyon, a magnificent location that has only recently been discovered. Fjaðrárgljúfur (Feather River Canyon) is a surreal sight – a marvelous sheer-walled river canyon covered in blankets of velvet-green moss.

Our tours will take you straight to the most spectacular sights in Iceland, but there are ways of getting even closer if you want to! At the Glacier Lagoon (Jökulsárlón), you can jump into an amphibious vehicle for an unforgettable tour around the lagoon, sailing amongst the glittering giants.

Bird Watching

Everyone wants to see Iceland’s famous puffins when they visit in the summer months (late May until mid-August) . Iceland is also home to countless more species of birds, some of which stay all year round.

On our South Coast and Ring Road tours, you’ll also have a chance to see Arctic terns, kittiwakes, guillemots, and razorbills. Lake Mývatn in North Iceland attracts thousands of ducks each summer, making it a bird watcher’s paradise! Look out for the Barrow’s Goldeneye, Harlequin ducks, gyrfalcons, gannets, and ptarmigans! Our Westfjords and Snæfellsnes tours also include visits to bird-filled cliffs along the route.

Visit the “original” Geyser on our Golden Circle tours

Iceland’s fierce volcanic activity fuels gushing geysers all around the country, and the most famous hot spring is Geysir , one of the highlights of our Golden Circle tours . Geysir was the first erupting hot spring discovered by Europeans, and its name is the Icelandic word for “gush”, giving its name to all hot springs worldwide. Geysir is quiet these days, but Strokkur sends hot water and vapor high into the sky every few minutes! You won’t have to wait long to see it blow sky-high. So get your camera ready – this will be one of the best photo opportunities you’ll have in Iceland!

Gullfoss Waterfall

Discover the glorious Gullfoss on our Golden Circle tours

One of the highlights of the famous Golden Circle route , Gullfoss is a thundering two-tier waterfall fueled by Langjökull , the “Long Glacier”, which you’ll see far inland if it’s a clear day. Tumbling more than thirty meters into a dramatic rock canyon, Gullfoss is one of the most thrilling waterfalls in the country, and you can see the falls from several viewing platforms. Watch out for rainbows on sunny days, and wear waterproofs – millions of gallons of water crashing over the cascade creates lots of spray!

Traditional Architecture

See the famous turf-roofed buildings!

Traditional Icelandic architecture is characterized by its simplicity, functionality, and integration with the natural environment. During our tours you will be able to see couple of its examples.

Enjoy an evening and overnight stay in the capital of the North

The glacial environment of Sólheimajökull provides a unique opportunity to witness the effects of climate change, as the glacier has been receding in recent years. This caused new Glacial Lagoon to appear on the map of Iceland, where huge chunks of ice slowly float on its surface.

Húsafell Canyon Baths

Bathe like Icelanders did in the old days!

This place offers a unique and natural relaxation experience, nestled within a stunning canyon surrounded by lush greenery. These are traditional and authentic Icelandic bathing pools , inspired by the age-old ways used by the locals in this area for a thousand years. Sustainably built in the traditional stone-bath style in an off-grid location, it’s a unique combination.

Rauðisandur Red Beach

Find yourself on the Westernmost Beach in Europe!

Rauðisandur is a stunning golden sandy beach located in the Westfjords region of Iceland. It is often referred to as the “Secret Waterfall” or “Cave Watefall” due to its concealed location and the fact, that is very often missed by many !

Diamond Beach

Part of the Silver Circle tour route, glacial meltwater gently cascades down a series of steps from the middle of moss-covered lava cliffs, with the falls stretching for hundreds of meters. The waters seep through the Hallmundarhraun lava field until reaching the White River before tumbling gracefully below. The early Viking settlers held their parliaments (the Alþingi) here for a thousand years, and Iceland declared its independence from this stunning location in 1944, so this is a sacred place for all Icelanders! It’s now a UNESCO World Heritage Site , making it a must-see stop on our Golden Circle tours .

It can be slippery, but the views are unforgettable if you don’t mind getting wet! The chute is fueled by glacial meltwater from the volcano that stopped air traffic in 2010, putting Iceland on the map! A “secret” waterfall called Gljúfrabúi is nearby, hidden in a little green rock canyon – we’ll show you where to find it!

Reynisfjara Black Beach

Where else can you get up close to immense icebergs in a glacial meltwater lagoon? On our South Coast Multi-Day and Ring Road tours , you can visit the astonishing Glacier Lagoon at Jökulsárlón , where you’ll see gigantic icebergs floating serenely around a spectacular lake, which only formed about 80 years ago. Culture and customs.

Similar to many other parts of Europe , Iceland has rules in place to help preserve its culture and geographic isolation is also a factor in developing and preserving the country’s cultural qualities. Independence, self-sufficiency and a strong work ethic – traits that allowed this northern island to flourish in challenging conditions – continue to be highly valued today.

Icelandic culture and customs are full of myths and legends, many with a connection to Christian and pagan values. Folk tales of elves, gnomes, fairies and trolls still circulate, and whether or not the locals continue telling these to unlock the secrets of the past, or simply in jest, they’re definitely worth listening to. But when news outlets report on road plans being changed to avoid disrupting an elfin church, it’s easy to believe that this unusual country and its magical landscapes are a product of what lies ‘hidden’ in its mysterious depths.

Today, Iceland is a highly modern and progressive society. It is consistently rated as having the smallest gender pay gap and strong LGBTQIA+ rights representation in the parliament and media. It’s also one of the greenest countries in the world, with almost all energy coming from renewable resources such as hydropower and geothermal.

History and government

Pre-modern history.

This island nation was settled by Vikings in the ninth century, with much of the early literature recognizing Norse sailor Ingolfur Arnason as the first settler of Iceland, founding Reykjavik in AD874 along with his wife and brother. Icelanders remain proud to this day of their Viking heritage. The Icelandic language, for example, is so similar to the Old Norse spoken during Viking times that Icelanders can still read and understand the original Icelandic sagas.

A book of settlements titled Landnamabok, compiled in the 12th century, documents the names and other details of nearly 400 original settlers of Iceland who arrived in the ninth and tenth centuries. The document tells of a Norse Viking called Floki who sailed to Iceland for fishing and farming, however, due to his livestock not surviving in the conditions, had to return to his home in Norway. After heading up a mountain and looking over a fjord full of sea ice, he named this land Iceland.

In AD930, an Icelandic General Assembly was established and was deemed a Christian settlement less than a century later. Settlers and slaves brought to Iceland by Scandinavians were of Irish and Norse descent, and although some still debate which communities influenced the identity we now know to be Icelandic, the first distinctive text documenting ‘Icelandic-ness’ is said to be a rule book of sorts – the First Grammatical Treatise.

20th century and today

After long periods under Norwegian and Danish rule, Iceland was recognized as a sovereign state in 1918. On 17 June 1944, Iceland became an independent republic. It has a multi-party parliamentary system and a written constitution. The parliament is still called Althingi after its medieval General Assembly.

Many of Iceland’s major industries stem from its location and surrounding natural resources. Tourism aside, fishing and seafood products make up much of the country’s exports and employ a majority of the workforce along with agriculture and farming. Recent investment in greenhouses and geothermal energy has seen Iceland become increasingly self-sufficient, growing products that usually do not fare well in icy climates, such as potatoes, tomatoes and potted plants. Other food is imported along with many consumer goods.

Eating and drinking

Flanked by the ocean and inhabited by almost twice the amount of sheep as humans, Iceland understandably boasts a cuisine dominated by seafood and local lamb.

The country’s diet relies on plenty of potatoes and lamb, but seafood trumps all – sourced fresh year-round from the waters of the North Atlantic and Arctic and prepared in a variety of ways. Be sure to try Hardfiskur – a salty fish jerky, best enjoyed buttered.

Sheep and cows are free-range and fed chemical-free diets, making lamb and dairy products exceptionally good here. One of the best ways to enjoy the produce on offer is to warm yourself up from the inside out with a hearty meat soup: a mixture of lamb, root vegetables, herbs, and rice.

Skyr, a popular yogurt that is technically a cheese, is also a must-try in all its variety of flavors. Eat it like the locals do at any time of the day – for breakfast, as a snack, as a dipping sauce, in drink form (called drykkur), or as a dessert topping.

Surprisingly, hot dogs are Iceland’s most iconic fast food. Widely available, a hot dog is probably the cheapest meal you’ll have in Iceland. Order one with all the toppings – sweet mustard, ketchup, raw onions, deep-fried onions, and aioli.

Rye bread (also known as rugbraud) and butter is a common side to most meals in Iceland, but the preferred way of cooking the loaves are quite unique. Traditionally, the bread is buried near a natural hot spring, sprinkled with sugar, and left to gently steam for up to 24 hours. The end result is dense, cake-like bread that has a slightly sweet taste. Enjoy it with a traditional Icelandic soup, smoked lamb, or, of course, fish.

Name a food and chances are Icelanders have tried to add licorice to it. Black licorice is beloved by locals and found in a wide range of desserts and candy bars. During your time here, head to Valdis in Reykjavik to test out a cone filled with salted black licorice ice cream. Even if the weather’s cold, the ice cream joints will be open!

The weird and wacky

Icelanders have a reputation for serving up some of the most unusual food in the world – boiled sheep’s head, fermented shark known as harkarl, ram testicles and smoked puffin to name a few. Although the country’s isolation and harsh winters once meant these foods were eaten out of necessity, today most of these ‘delicacies’ are only prepared to shock tourists. Try if you dare, but we suggest sticking to the common foods that locals eat.

Alcohol can be expensive in Iceland and is best bought at the duty-free shop. Although forms of prohibition existed until 1989, alcohol is now widely available all over the country in state-run liquor stores. If you’re feeling brave, try the local brew, Brennivin – a potent, traditional caraway-flavored schnapps nicknamed ‘black death’.

It's impossible not to be amazed by the sheer size and beauty of Jokulsarlon, Iceland’s famous glacial lagoon. Enjoy a boat tour along the icy waters where you'll cruise past towering glaciers and witness icebergs of all shapes, sizes and shades of blue drifting into the Atlantic Ocean. Cool down on our 8 day Iceland Discovery tour.

4. Experience life in Akureyri

Soak up the charm of this northern port city – the second-largest city in Iceland. Better described as a big town with lots of character, you'll be won over by its quaint turf homes, rich history and folklore, and the imposing Mount Súlur that looms over the town. Akureyri is also an ideal Northern Lights viewing location between September and April. Explore the streets of Akureyri on our 9 day Premium Iceland tour.

5. Be wowed by Westfjords

Venture off course to the unspoiled, untamed reaches of the Westfjords – without the big crowds. This is a land where mountains meet the sea most dramatically, where waterfalls tumble down into the inky fjords and puffins live along the towering cliffs. If you’re lucky and conditions allow, we might cruise along Látrabjarg (Europe’s largest bird cliff) to see puffins, razorbills, guillemots and more. Adventure through the Westfjords on our 14 day East Greenland and Iceland Northern Lights tour.

6. Bathe in the Blue Lagoon

There's no need to worry about being cold all the time in Iceland when you can slip into the famous Blue Lagoon just out of Reykjavik. Surrounded by black volcanic rock, a soak in the mineral-rich, milk-blue waters of this geothermal spa is the perfect way to relax and unwind after a big day of walking.

Geography and environment

Iceland possesses some of the world’s most incredible natural wonders and unique landscapes. From active volcanoes to vast ice fields, bubbling hot springs and enormous glaciers, these dramatic contrasts have earned Iceland the nickname of the ‘Land of Fire and Ice’.

Many of these geological features are products of geographical location – on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates intersect and their movements away from each other create volcanic activity. The country is covered by moss-carpeted lava fields, soaring fjords, incredible waterfalls and dramatic geysers, all of which add to Iceland’s otherworldly look.

The country is also the perfect spot to see the Northern Lights. From September to March, you’ll have the best chance to view this spectacular natural light show when the skies are clear and auroral activity is high. But don’t let that stop you from visiting in other seasons – Iceland’s natural wonders are truly year-round attractions.

Top 4 natural phenomena of Iceland

1. Northern Lights

The Northern Hemisphere's Aurora Borealis has captivated and intrigued travelers for years. Any winter tour of Iceland absolutely must include a chance to see the Northern Lights. This natural light display that runs along magnetic fields often brings hypnotic green, yellow and red shades to the night sky in Iceland from September to March. As one of nature's most magnificent triumphs, this is one unforgettable spectacle.

2. Gullfoss

Otherwise known as Golden Falls, this spectacular three-tiered waterfall drops suddenly into a deep cavern. The falls are surrounded by lush, green countryside, and the rainbows created by the mist and spray provide brilliant photo opportunities.

3. Lake Myvatn

This part of northern Iceland was born from volcanic eruptions millions of years ago and continues to be shaped by volcanic activity to this day. The combination of strange lava formations, thermal caves and a sprawling lake dotted with craters and rising rocks makes for an eerie yet beautiful landscape.

4. Jokulsarlon

Literally translating to ‘glacial river lagoon’, this monumental glacier lake is the largest in Iceland. Featuring a parade of large and small blue icebergs floating on and under the pure, icy water, this lagoon is so beautiful that it has been used as a backdrop for Hollywood films, a set for reality television shows and in a starring role on a postage stamp!

Iceland is notorious for being an expensive destination. Travelling on a budget here is difficult but can be done. Head to Bonus – Iceland’s discount grocery store – so you can cook rather than eat out for each meal. The duty-free store at Keflavik International Airport is the best place to pick up a bottle of Icelandic alcohol such as Brennivin liquor, Reyka vodka or Viking Gold beer for a fraction of the price you’d find elsewhere. It’s also a good idea to travel as a group, as operators can get better rates than a single traveler at hotels and restaurants, plus they know all the local hotspots.

If you’d like to take home Icelandic local specialties, Reykjavik is the best place to shop. Some of the country’s coolest retailers can be found on Laugavegur, one of the oldest shopping streets. Here you can browse clothing from quirky local designers alongside traditional lambswool sweaters, as well as tourist shops selling plastic Viking hats and puffin magnets. For smaller boutiques selling local art, head to Skolavordustigur.

Festival and events

Despite the long and dark winters, Icelanders are among the happiest people in the world. Why? One reason is that they understand the importance of getting together and having a good time, even if it’s pitch black outside. There are many celebrations to join in on throughout the year, but here are a few to look out for:

Winter Lights Festival

Every year, buildings around Reykjavik light up at night to celebrate both the winter world and the growing light after a long period of darkness. The Winter Lights Festival uses many public buildings, all major museums, and thermal pools to illuminate the city with lighting designs and art installations to thaw people out after a long winter.

This annual mid-winter feast in January or February is one of Iceland’s oldest festivals, dating back to Viking days. Fearless eaters can find restaurants in Reykjavik offering special Thorrablot dinners of boiled sheep’s heads, rotten shark’s meat, and cured ram testicles. If you can, try to snag an invitation to a local’s house, where celebrations tend to be more festive and involve lots of singing, dancing and drinking.

Viking Festival

Modern-day Vikings in traditional garb flock to Hafnarfjorour each June for a festival Leif Erikson would approve of. Swordfights, archery, axe throwing, a traditional market, concerts, and a proper Viking feast are all part of the festivities.

National Day

1944 marks the year that Iceland became a republic after an overwhelming majority of the citizens voted for independence. The deciding referendum took place between May 20 and 23 that year; however, Iceland’s National Day is celebrated on June 17th – the birthday of the man who originally led the movement in the late 19th century, Jon Sigurdsson. There are parades all around the country, usually with brass bands and marching horses. Music, food, fireworks, and street parties – you get it, they’re a patriotic bunch.

Dalvik Fiskidagurinn Mikli (The Great Fish Day)

Each August, the northern fishing village of Dalvik invites you to a free, all-you-can-eat fish and seafood buffet. The event is held for no reason other than to bring people together over a delicious meal. You might come for the free food, but you’ll stay for the company.

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

When is the best time to visit Iceland?

Deciding what you want to see in Iceland will give you a better idea of when is the best time to travel. Wanting to get active around the countryside and see waterfalls and wildlife? The warmer spring and summer months are probably ideal. Prefer to soak in the geothermal lagoons and get a chance to see the Northern Lights? Well, likely the cooler months – with their longer nights – are best for you.

Spring and summer are considered optimal times to visit Iceland if green landscapes and balmy days are your thing. The early spring months bring warmer days, while summer offers long daylight hours with only short nights. In the summer season, July and August are the warmest months and the busiest time for tourists.

In September, tourism tends to slow down as the weather becomes unpredictable and the countryside is usually less accessible. However, there are plenty of attractions for the off-peak traveler, including the beauty of fall colors and, of course, the awe-inspiring Northern Lights.

As you might expect, winters in Iceland can be challenging. During late December there are about four-and-a-half hours of daylight and it's often cloudy. In January, there are on average three sunny days in Reykjavík, with temperatures hovering around freezing point, often with chilling winds.

Do I need a visa to travel to Iceland?

Iceland is a member of the Schengen Convention, which means that if you travel to an EU member country or countries, like Iceland, for a total of less than 90 days, a visa is not required. Citizens of Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the US, the UK and other member countries of the EU and Schengen area are included under this arrangement. Other countries do require a visa to visit Iceland, including citizens of South Africa.

Visas are the responsibility of the individual traveler. Entry requirements can change at any time, so it's important that you check for the latest information. Please visit the relevant consular website of the country or countries you’re visiting for detailed and up-to-date visa information specific to your country of origin. Check the Essential Trip Information section of your tour itinerary for more information.

Is tipping customary in Iceland?

Tipping isn't expected in Iceland. Hotels, restaurants and cafes already include a service fee and consumption taxes (VAT) in the bill, so tipping extra isn't necessary. However, feel free to leave a small amount if your experience has been particularly good, especially for assistance provided by drivers, tour leaders or service workers.

What is the internet access like in Iceland?

Travelers will be able to access the internet in cybercafes and at wi-fi hotspots in Iceland's cities and large towns. Rural and remote areas may have less internet access, so be prepared when traveling away from the city.

Most accommodation and eateries in Iceland offer wi-fi access, which is usually free to use with a code. If you wish to stay connected for the majority of your trip, it may be wise to purchase a prepaid SIM card with a data package.

Many Icelandic libraries and tourist information offices have shared computers for public internet access if you are without a device to connect to wi-fi. Sometimes a small fee is charged for this service.

Can I use my cell phone while in Iceland?

Travelers can use their cell phones in Iceland's main cities and towns, though remote and isolated areas may have inferior cell reception.

If you wish to stay connected for the majority of your trip, it may be wise to purchase a prepaid SIM card for the duration of your journey. This will likely be the cheapest way to use your phone in Iceland.

For EU citizens, depending on who you have your phone plan with, you may be able to use your current SIM in Iceland – your service provider will be able to provide more details.

Global roaming can also be activated, but check with your service provider to find out about any fees you may incur, as sometimes this can be expensive.

What are the toilets like in Iceland?

Modern, flushable toilets are the standard in Iceland.

In terms of public toilets, Reykjavik and other major towns and cities have some, but along highways and at many tourist destinations – especially campgrounds and natural attractions – there is a lack of facilities. Expect to pay a small fee when visiting public toilets and, in busy months, expect queues in main tourist areas.

There have been recent occurrences of tourists resorting to other means in remote places and near tourist sites. We recommend being prepared and talking to your group leader if you have any concerns.

Can I drink the water in Iceland?

Tap water is considered safe to drink in Iceland unless marked otherwise. For environmental reasons, try to avoid buying bottled water. Fill a reusable water bottle or canteen with filtered water instead.

Are credit cards widely accepted in Iceland?

Credit cards are widely accepted in Iceland and are used frequently by locals to pay for just about anything. Paying with a credit card at shops, guesthouses, supermarkets, restaurants, cafes, and on taxi rides shouldn't present a problem. Iceland is almost a cashless society, so cards are the best option; however, a lot of payments will require your four-digit PIN, so be sure to know this before you leave home.

What is ATM access like in Iceland?

ATMs are usually easy to find in Iceland's cities and villages and generally accept most foreign cards.

What is the weather like in Iceland?

Iceland’s temperatures are cool and do vary throughout the year. In winter months, minimum temperatures plummet to below freezing. In Reykjavik, summer temperatures average at around 52°F, while winter maximums are approximately 32°F. Rainfall is quite consistent throughout the year; between 25–50 mm per month, with most days experiencing some rainfall.

Is it safe to travel to Iceland?

Iceland is a very safe country to travel to and is one of the safest countries in the world.

Is Iceland safe for LGBTQIA+ travellers?

The people of Iceland have an open and accepting attitude to LGBTQIA+ communities, and Iceland is considered one of the world’s most LGBTQIA+ friendly countries. Since 2006, same-sex couples have had equal access to adoption and IVF, and in 2010 the Icelandic Parliament made a unanimous decision to define marriage as between two individuals. As might be expected in a small country, however, the gay scene is quite low-key, even in Reykjavik.

In 2012, more legislation was passed to formalize the name and identity-changing process for the needs of trans and genderqueer individuals. There is still a way to go to achieve full equality, but Iceland is, in many regards, leading the way globally.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting Equaldex or ILGA before you travel and reading more about the LGBTQIA+ culture in Iceland .

If you are traveling solo on an Intrepid group tour, you will share accommodation with a passenger of the same gender as per your passport information. If you don’t identify with the gender assigned on your passport, please let us know at the time of booking and we’ll arrange the rooming configuration accordingly. A single supplement is available on some tours for travellers who do not wish to share a room.

Is Iceland accessible for travelers with disabilities?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Because of its remote location and size, Iceland can prove difficult when it comes to accessibility for individuals with mobility issues. Some of the main sights, such as the Blue Lagoon, are wheelchair accessible, but many of the natural attractions have unpaved paths and unsteady terrain. Iceland has a dedicated information center,  Thekkingarmidstod Sjalfsbjorg , that provides up-to-date information on accessibility and accessible facilities in Iceland, as well as other related information.

If you do live with a visual, hearing, or other impairment, let your booking agent or group leader know early on so they’re aware and suitable arrangements can be made. As a general rule, knowing some common words in the local language, carrying a written itinerary with you, and taking to the streets in a group, rather than solo, can help make your travel experience the best it can be.

What to wear in Iceland

In summer, Iceland experiences cool but mild weather throughout the country, with maximum temperatures averaging around 55°F. It’s still important, however, to pack some warm clothing at this time, as temperatures at night can drop quite dramatically. In winter, some days barely reach over 32°F, so preparing for this is crucial. It can be wet and windy, and roads may be iced over, so thermal gear, a waterproof jacket and pants and sturdy walking boots are all highly recommended.

Plus, you'll have ready-made friends to share the journey with. All you have to do is turn up with a healthy sense of adventure and we’ll take care of the rest.

A traditional lei greeting welcomes us to Oahu before we check in to our hotel. Nestled along the white sands of Waikiki Beach, enjoy views of Diamond Head Crater and beautiful rooms with private lanais.

Day 2 : Pearl Harbor

Start the day with a delicious breakfast at our hotel. Then, journey to the most moving site on Oahu, Pearl Harbor National Memorial. On December 7, 1941, the Japanese attacked the Navy’s Pacific Fleet, catapulting the U.S. into World War II. We stop by the visitor center to view the exhibits that recall that pivotal day and embark on a Navy launch to the USS Arizona Memorial, which spans the sunken battleship. After a Holiday Vacations Welcome Lunch, we tour the Honolulu area, viewing the volcanic shaped Hawaiian State Capitol building and Iolani Palace, the only palace in the U.S. once inhabited by a reigning monarch. We then visit the Punchbowl, an extinct volcano and home of the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific. *Tickets to the USS Arizona Memorial are subject to availability through National Park Service and confirmed the day prior.

Day 3 : Pride of America

After a relaxing morning we transfer to the only U.S.-flagged cruise ship, Norwegian Cruise Line's Pride of America , to begin our seven-night cruise. Enjoy all the benefits of NCL’s Freestyle Cruising, where you set your own schedule with a variety of activities and dining options. Delight in spectacular live entertainment and the ship’s popular deck parties. The onboard Native ambassadors teach us about their culture, providing an authentic Hawaiian experience.

Day 4 : Maui

Our first port of call is Kahului, Maui. We have ample time to explore the Valley Isle, named for its long blankets of green set against soaring mountains. The second largest island in Hawaii, it's surrounded by gorgeous beaches and frequented throughout the winter months by calving humpback whales.

Day 5 : The Valley Isle

Wake up for a second day on Maui today and choose from NCL’s excursions or relax onboard and enjoy the variety of entertainment and dining options. Catch a show at an onboard venue with live music in casual lounges or join a DJ dance party at sea!

Sail into Hilo on the Big Island this morning, gateway to the fascinating world of active volcanoes. We'll visit Rainbow Falls, famous for producing colorful spectrums of light with water cascading from 80 feet high. Then, we stop for a delicious included lunch just outside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. After lunch, with our own private driver-guide, we explore volcanic craters, steam vents, and eerie lava formations. The park displays the monumental results of 70 million years of volcanic activity and sheds light on the creation of the Hawaiian Islands. Back on board our ship, we cruise around the Big Island to Kona.

Day 7 : The Big Island

Visit the leeward (west) side of the Big Island today, anchoring off the coast and taking tenders into the heart of Kailua-Kona. Choose from a variety of activities for leisure time such as hiking the rare black sand beach, embarking on a glass-bottom reef tour, or learning why this area is famous for its coffee. You may also enjoy an optional tour of Kona to see St. Benedict’s renowned painted church, noted for its colorful murals that depict biblical scenes, and Old Hawaii at Pu’uhonua O Honauau National Historical Park, a place of refuge. Within this previously political and religious sanctuary for breakers of sacred law, discover a temple that once housed the bones of deceased chiefs with wooden images of the gods that protect it.

Day 8 : Evening Luau

We dock in Nawiliwili, Kauai this morning. Kauai is known as The Garden Isle, a lush paradise of rainforest, tropical flowers, magnificent canyons, and beaches. Norwegian Cruise Line provides many exciting options to explore this beautiful island for the day. Tonight, we are immersed in the flavor, culture, and sounds of Polynesia with an included excursion to Luau Kalamaku at Kilohana Plantation.

Discover more of Kauai today with a full day at leisure to spend as you please. This is a great time for an optional Mokihana Helicopter adventure for bird’s-eye views of colorful Waimea Canyon and the “Valley of the Lost Tribe,” shrouded in mystery. We board our ship this evening and begin cruising back to the beautiful island of Oahu.

Day 10 : Oahu’s North Shore

We disembark our ship this morning in Honolulu. Then, we meet our driver-guide for a private tour of Oahu’s North Shore, a mecca for surfers as well as those seeking blue waters and a taste of Old Hawaii. Later, we board our overnight flight to the mainland.

Day 11 : Arrive Home

A Hui Hou (until we meet again).

A traditional lei greeting welcomes us to the Islands of Aloha. We check in to our beautiful hotel for the next two nights, nestled along the white sands of Waikiki Beach with views of Diamond Head crater. Enjoy soaking up the warm Hawaiian breeze from your private lanai.

Day 2 : Pearl Harbor & City Tour

Today, we explore Honolulu’s must-see attractions and get to know fellow travelers over a delicious Welcome Lunch. Journey to the most moving site on Oahu: Pearl Harbor National Memorial. At the visitor center, browse exhibits that recall the pivotal day that catapulted the United States into World War II and take a Navy launch to the USS Arizona Memorial, which spans the sunken battleship. On our city tour, view the volcanic-shaped Hawaiian State Capitol building as well as Iolani Palace, the only palace in the country once inhabited by a reigning monarch. We also visit the Punchbowl, an extinct volcano and home of the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific. The evening is at your leisure. *Tickets to the USS Arizona Memorial are subject to availability through the National Park Service and confirmed the day prior.

We indulge in a relaxing morning before transferring to the only U.S.-flagged cruise ship, Norwegian Cruise Line's Pride of America , for our seven-night cruise. Enjoy all the benefits of NCL’s Freestyle Cruising, where you set your own schedule with a variety of activities and dining options. There are countless ways to spend your time on board such as getting pampered at the spa, listening to live music, joining one of the ship’s popular deck parties, sipping a mai tai at the bar, or learning about local culture from a Native ambassador.

Our first port of call is Kahului, Maui. The day is yours to explore the Valley Isle, named for its long blankets of green basins set against soaring mountains. You may enjoy playing a round of golf or soaking up the sun on a gorgeous beach while taking in views of the North Pacific Ocean, which is frequented by calving humpback whales throughout the winter.

Take advantage of another full day on Maui to spend as you please! Choose from NCL’s incredible excursions, explore independently, or relax on board with a variety of entertainment and dining options.

Our ship docks in Hilo on the Big Island this morning, the gateway to a fascinating world of active volcanoes. We board a comfortable motorcoach and travel to Rainbow Falls, hoping to see one of its colorful spectrums of light as the water cascades from 80 feet above. Our journey continues to a restaurant just outside of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park for lunch. Afterwards, our private driver-guide takes us inside the park to share fascinating insight about the creation of the islands as we witness how 70 million years of volcanic activity has shaped the landscape. Gaze upon volcanic craters, steam vents, eerie lava formations, and more. Back on the ship, we begin our cruise around the Big Island to Kona.

We anchor off the coast of the Big Island’s leeward (west) side this morning, taking tenders into the heart of Kailua-Kona. Spend the day pursuing personal interests with a variety of shore excursions and activities to choose from. You may enjoy a black sand beach hike, a glass-bottom reef tour, or an enriching coffee farm visit to make your own fresh roast. A tour of historic Kona is also an option, including sights of Old Hawaii at Pu’uhonua O Honaunau National Historical Park and St. Benedict's historic painted church, noted for its colorful murals depicting biblical scenes.

Day 8 : Authentic Luau

This morning’s port of call is Nawiliwili, Kauai. Known as the Garden Isle, this island is a lush paradise of rainforests, tropical flowers, magnificent canyons, and beaches. NCL provides many exciting options to make the most of your day, including an excursion to Waimea Canyon and Smith’s Fern Grotto. This evening, we travel to Luau Kalamaku at Kilohana Plantation for a traditional evening that immerses us in the flavors, culture, dancing, and sounds of Polynesia.

We enjoy another full day to discover Kauai’s best treasures. This is a wonderful time to experience flightseeing on an optional Mokihana Helicopter adventure! Take in bird’s-eye views of the island’s stunning landscape, like the “Valley of the Lost Tribe,” shrouded in mystery. We board our ship this evening and begin cruising back to the beautiful island of Oahu.

Our cruise concludes in Honolulu this morning. We disembark to meet our driver-guide for an incredible private tour of Oahu’s North Shore, a mecca for surfers and those seeking a taste of Old Hawaii. Later, we board our overnight flight back to the mainland.

A hui hou (until we meet again).

Accommodation on our Iceland tours

We always book hotels for our tours well in advance so you can be assured of comfortable accommodations during your trip to Iceland. We guarantee a night's stay at a country hotel and/or guesthouse. We have partnered with hotels that undergo regular inspections to ensure they always maintain our high standards.

Rooms come with private or shared bathrooms, depending on your booking. In addition, all hotels have free Wi-Fi, towels, hairdryers, and a kettle for your convenience. A single supplement is available if you want your own room, but it's not mandatory. If you're a single traveler and prefer not to book a single room, you'll be assigned a shared room with another traveler of the same gender.

What to pack for your Iceland vacation?

When preparing for a longer tour in Iceland with us, packing efficiently is key. Limit your belongings to a small backpack or day bag and one additional luggage piece not exceeding 20 kg (44 lbs). We offer storage in Reykjavik for those extra items for a minimal fee.

Ensure to include these basics in your packing list:

  • Warm jacket
  • Socks and gloves
  • House slippers (Icelanders remove shoes inside homes)
  • Swimsuits and towels (for pools and hot springs)
  • Sun lotion and chapstick

For detailed packing tips, including selecting the right clothes and essentials for Iceland's climate, check out our guides on dressing for the weather , preparing for hiking , and the complete Iceland equipment list .

Transport on our Iceland tours

Most of our tours start from a meeting point in Reykjavik. We prioritize minimizing our carbon footprint and, thus, do not offer pick-up from Keflavik International Airport. However, transfer buses and other options are available. Check for more information in our guide on how to get from Keflavik to Reykjavik .

All our multi-day tours come with professional drivers who operate minibusses. This ensures a small-group experience and enables our guides to efficiently cater to your travel needs.

Meals on our Iceland tours

All the hotels that we stay in during the tour include breakfast in the price. You will enjoy a breakfast buffet with various options such as grains, fruits, coffee, tea, and more.

Note that lunch and dinner are not typically included in the tour price. However, your guide will always stop at a restaurant for lunch, where you can choose from various dishes. Dinner is available at each hotel.

Driving distances on our Iceland tours

During our multi-day tour, we typically drive an average of 300 km (186 miles) daily. You can expect to spend around 4-5 hours in the car each day, but don't worry - we will stop at various locations throughout the tour for sightseeing, activities, bathroom breaks, and lunch.

What month is the best time to go to Iceland?

Iceland, while very different, is equally stunning during both winter and summer. The summer treats you with never-ending days, flocks of Puffins, and whale watching, while the winter flaunts every color of the rainbow during an Aurora show and takes you deep into the ice caves. It’s no secret that summer in Iceland offers a much gentler climate with more opportunities to explore hidden gems. But the holiday season brings a lot of charm and lower prices to the country. The warmest months in Iceland are June, July, and August, while the coldest are from October to April.

Is Iceland expensive to visit?

Being a remote island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean makes Iceland one of the more expensive destinations out there. Since a lot of goods need to be imported from overseas, the prices for the usual items can be higher than average. However, there are ways to save money on your trip if you want to travel around Iceland on a budget. For example, Iceland has some of the cleanest freshwaters in the world that you can access and drink for free. You can also have free access to the myriad of waterfalls and certain geothermal pools scattered around the country.

Do they speak English in Iceland?

Yes. You will find it easy to communicate with Icelanders in the English language.

Do I need a visa to go to Iceland?

It depends on the country you’re from. Iceland is in the Schengen Zone, so if your country is in the Schengen Zone or has an agreement with Schengen countries, such as the USA, you don’t need a visa to travel to Iceland. All citizens from other countries should check the visa requirements with their embassy.

Where should I stay in Iceland?

Iceland is increasingly becoming a popular tourist destination, so you have plenty of accommodation options. Cozy countryside hotels, as well as 4-star city hotels, are scattered all over the country. On top of that, you might enjoy your stay in an authentic guesthouse or go wild and camp in one of the many campsites or huts around the main attractions.

How many days do you need in Iceland?

Even though it’s relatively small, Iceland packs a lot of natural wonders. Whether you’re here for a day or two weeks, you’ll have plenty to explore. To discover the most prominent sights in the country, a 5-6 day trip should suffice. You can choose from a few of our  5-day tours  around Iceland or go on our  award-winning 6-day adventure .

Are 4 days in Iceland enough?

It depends on what you want to do. Four days might be enough for simple sightseeing, but if you want to explore Iceland’s ice caves, hop on a snowmobile, and go whale watching, you might need a few extra days.

Can you see the Northern Lights from Reykjavik’s city center?

Yes. Reykjavik is one of the very few cities in the world and one of the two capitals where you can see  the Northern Lights .

Can you see the Northern Lights from the Blue Lagoon?

Yes, if the sky is clear and the Aurora is strong enough. Join us on a premium  Northern Lights and Blue Lagoon adventure .

What is the Golden Circle Tour in Iceland?

Golden Circle is a tourist route in the South of Iceland, covering around 190 mi (300 km). It is located close to Reykjavik in the southern highlands and contains some of the most popular sights in the country. The main stops along the route are Thingvellir National Park, Gullfoss Waterfall and Haukadalur Valley with Geysir and Stokkur.

Is the Blue Lagoon on the Golden Circle?

No. Blue Lagoon is located on Reykjanes Peninsula in Southwest Iceland.

Should you book tours in Iceland in advance?

Iceland has become a popular destination for travelers from all over the world. Tours and accommodation tend to get booked up quickly. While there still might be a chance to book a hotel or a tour on the spot, we strongly recommend booking it at least a few months prior to your visit. However, don’t refrain from booking tours when you’re in Iceland, you might be in luck!

How far is it from Keflavik Airport to the Blue Lagoon?

Blue Lagoon is around 20 minutes away from Keflavik International Airport by car. Public bus service is available from Keflavik Airport to Blue Lagoon every hour.

How long does it take to drive the Golden Circle?

Visiting the three main attractions on the Golden Circle won’t take you more than half a day. However, to really experience the beauty of this popular tourist route, you might want to give it a whole day.

What people love about Iceland Tours

Overall the guides and drivers were excellent - in their knowledge, driving safety, preparing the group for activities that were next on the list. The only down time during the day was some of the distances between stops. But not an issue as we were well aware of that before hand. A good value for the cost!!
Fantastic Driver/Guide Vjeran. You gave 120% knowledgeable. WHAT A BLAST!! Great group of fellow travelers from all over the world made the adventure. Non Stop Highlights from: Geysirs, multiple spectacular waterfalls, lava fields, glacier walk, whale watching cruise, volcanoes and many more. Vjeran, keep on inspiring everyone. All the best, Dazzling "Daredevil Darryl" from Down Under in South Australia.
I can't say enough good things about our Best of Iceland Tour. Gisli Anton Bjarnason was the best tour guide we've ever experienced! We thoroughly enjoyed our week!

G Adventures

"Ronan was an excellent guide. He is knowledgeable, full of energy, and seems to genuinely enjoy the tours and Iceland. He is able to pull the entire group together so it feels like a family by the end of the trip. All of the activities were excellent and the selected restaurants were great. The days are jam-packed with activities and sites to see, so it isn’t the most relaxing vacation if that is what you are looking for. Iceland was beautiful and we are glad we got to visit. We did see the Northern Lights during the first week of April, but they were somewhat faint behind the clouds. Ronan creates such a fun and unique trip that the Northern Lights become an afterthought by the end.

"We loved this tour. We were taken to a huge variety of beautiful scenic landscapes plus we were treated to interesting Icelandic folklore, history and cultural experiences. We walked on a glacier, saw whales from a ship, visited an Icelandic horse farm, hiked up volcanoes, stayed on an isolated farm, visited lakes, spectacular waterfalls, ice lagoons and beaches. Accommations were excellent.

17 Best Greek Islands near Athens and Riviera Retreats for the Ultimate Escape

best Greek islands near Athens, Greece

  • 2 Pinterest

Discovering the best Greek islands near Athens is an adventure waiting to unfold. Greece , with its expansive coastline of about 13,600 kilometers—the longest in the Mediterranean basin—boasts over 6,000 islands and islets across the Aegean and Ionian Seas. With plenty of islands to choose from, finding your perfect island escape can seem overwhelming.

The closest island groups to Athens are the Argosaronic Islands and the Cyclades , each offering unique experiences, from tranquil retreats to cultural explorations. Also nearby is the island of Evia – the second largest in Greece – only an hour’s journey from the Greek capital. And if you want to experience the care-free island life without leaving the Greek mainland, the Athens Riviera will have you spoiled for choice!

While these destinations may not headline as many travel guides as Mykonos and Santorini , they are untouched by the mass tourism of their more famous counterparts and offer an authentic experience of Greek island life. What’s more, their close distance to Athens is perfect for a deep dive into the essence of Greece, from the historical marvels of the Acropolis on mainland Greece to the serene beauty of the Aegean Sea.

Whether you’re in the mood for a quick weekend getaway or a leisurely vacation, we’ve got you covered with the ultimate guide to the best islands close to Athens for every kind of holiday.

The Argosaronic Islands

The Argosaronic Islands , located in the Saronic Gulf, the Argolic Gulf and the southern Argolic coast, are not only some of the best Greek islands but also very close to the mainland, making them ideal for a quick day trips from Athens !

With favorable sea conditions, the Argosaronic is also the most popular area for sailing and boat tours from Athens during the summer months.

1 – Salamina, A Deep Dive in the Land of Ajax

Salamina Island, Greece

A stone’s throw from Athens, Salamis is a beacon of history and adventure. Celebrated as the home of the Homeric hero King Aeas (Ajax) of Telamon and the birthplace of the renowned dramatist Euripides, this island is steeped in lore, including its pivotal role in the Greco-Persian Wars with the famous naval battle in 480 BC.

Salamina’s allure extends beyond its history and archaeological interest, being an excellent destination for outdoor adventures, especially hiking and scuba diving . With a diving school operating year-round, catering both to novices and experienced divers, you’ll be exploring life under the waves in no time.

The island’s beaches are a particular draw, with Batsi ‘s serene shores by the pine forests and Kaki Vigla ‘s natural splendor and crystal-clear blue waters in the south. Iliakti beach dazzles with its fine pebbles and shallow azure waters on the west, while Selenia ‘s sandy beach offers tranquility on the east side of Salamina.

For those seeking vistas and secluded spots, Kanakia on the northwest provides panoramic views over to Aegina through the forested path, and near Peristeria in the south, Agios Nikolaos beach awaits with its pebbly shores and pool-like waters. This blend of historical intrigue and natural beauty makes Salamina an unparalleled destination among the best Greek islands near Athens.

2 – Aegina, A Jewel Close to Athens

Aegina Island, Greece

The beautiful island of Aegina is one of the most popular destinations to escape the city life in Athens. Aside from the crystal clear waters of its beaches (more on those later), the island is famous for the Aegina pistachios , one of the finest varieties of pistachio nuts, as well as its seafood taverns.

The most popular beach on the island is, without a doubt, Agia Marina , which has been awarded a Blue Flag. The sandy beach at Agios Vasileios has shallow waters and is ideal for families, while Aeginitissa is surrounded by Eucalyptus trees. For a more private and relaxed day on the beach, you can’t go wrong with Vaya and Portes .

Having been inhabited since antiquity, there is no shortage of ancient ruins , monuments and museums to visit. The sightseeing highlights include the ancient settlement of Kolona , which dates back to 2500 BC, the Temple of Aphaea , which was dedicated to the Olympian goddess Athena, the medieval settlement of Palaiochora and the Tower of Marcellus , which was constructed in the 17th century.

Due to its proximity to the Greek capital, Aegina is one of the most beloved retreats for Athenians, whether it’s for a quick day trip or a longer vacation.

3 – Moni, Aegina’s Sister Islet

Moni Island, Greece

Less than 500 meters from the cape of Perdika on Aegina, you will find the pine-covered islet of Moni. This uninhabited island in the Saronic is very popular during the summer months and has many organized beaches to welcome travelers from the nearby islands.

While completely barren on the side facing Aegina, the western coast is green, covered by a tufted pine forest and vegetation that includes fissures, cedars, and wild olive trees that reach down to the sea. As a wildlife sanctuary, the island’s only full-time residents are the deer, wild goats, peacocks and squirrels that roam freely.

Hiking enthusiasts will be delighted by the trails that cross the forest and lead you to an observatory at the highest point on the island, offering panoramic views of Aegina-Perdika, the peninsula of Methana, and Agistri.

4 – Agistri, the Unspoiled Gem of the Saronic

Agistri Island, Greece

To the west of Aegina lies Agistri , a true green paradise island in the Saronic Gulf that is closely associated with crystal-clear waters and relaxing under the sun. Agistri means ‘fish hook’ in Greek, so as you can expect, fishing is a bit part of the island’s history and culture.

Near the island’s natural port, you will find one of the most popular beaches on the island, Skala , with shallow waters, hotels, and restaurants. Equally impressive and organized is the beach at the village of Megalochori , also on the northern coast of Agistri.

The west of the island is best explored on foot and offers secluded spots for swimming and enjoying the sun, like Skliri . Here you will find the most remote beach on the island, Chalikiada , which is also popular with nudists.

But aside from a wealth of beaches and fishing villages to visit, Agistri is also a great destination for outdoor enthusiasts, offering many opportunities for kayaking , hiking, fishing, horse riding, biking and snorkeling .

5 – Poros, the Island of Serenity

Poros Island, Greece

The island of Poros is actually comprised of two islands separated by a canal: the larger island of Poros, known as Calavria in antiquity, and the volcanic island of Sphairia, which faces the village of Galatas on the Peloponnese. Due to its position, Poros is an ideal base for island hopping in the Saronic Gulf and visiting coastal towns such as Methana, Ermioni and Porto Heli.

The picturesque island capital is built above the port and has an idyllic and romantic ambiance with its lively seafront, neoclassical houses and balconies, flowery neighborhoods, and small corner shops.  Apart from the clocktower, the symbol of the island, another important attraction is the ruins of the Sanctuary of Poseidon in the center of Poros.

The most popular and organized beach on Poros is Askeli , which caters especially to water sports enthusiasts. The bay of Vagionia , with its turquoise waters, sand, and pebbles, offers a more relaxed experience and an ancient sunken city to explore! For a dash of romance to you trip from Athens, don’t forget to visit Agapi Limanaki, or Love Bay , with its towering pine trees, deep blue waters and golden sandy beach.

7 – Dokos, A True Hidden Gem

Dokos Island, Greece

Dokos, while not as known as its neighboring islands, Hydra and Spetses, is a true hidden gem in Greece and lies quietly opposite Ermioni. With settlements tracing back to the Copper Age, the island today is a protected archaeological site. Nevertheless, during the summer months, Dokos springs back to life as it is a very popular destination for sailing and day trips.

The island, known for its strategic significance during the Byzantine era, harbors the remnants of a Venetian castle on its eastern flank. Adventurous travelers are rewarded with a hike that leads to these ruins, offering a glimpse into the past amidst breathtaking natural scenery. Among its archaeological treasures, the highlight is undoubtedly the world’s oldest known shipwreck , dating back to 2200 BC, a silent witness to the maritime prowess of ancient civilizations.

These days, yachts and tourist boats temporarily anchor in the very same bay during their passage from the Saronic to the Myrtoan Sea. With crystal clear turquoise waters, a tranquil atmosphere and its only residents being the few donkeys, turkeys, and goats that graze freely, Dokos is the very definition of an untouched and secluded paradise.

Cyclades Islands

The Cyclades got their name from ancient Greek geographers due to their circular arrangement around Delos, the birthplace of the Olympian deities Artemis and Apollo.

While further out from Athens than the Saronic Islands, many of the Cycladic islands are easily accessible from Piraeus, Lavrio or Rafina. With picturesque whitewashed houses, breathtaking views and some of the finest beaches in Greece, it’s no wonder that millions of tourists flock here every year.

9 – Kea (Tzia), the Hiker’s Paradise

Kea Island, Greece

At just 16 nautical miles from Athens, Kea (also known as Tzia) is the closest of the Cycladic islands to the Greek mainland. With great natural landscape, picturesque villages and splendid beaches, the island has long been a favorite amongst Athenians for both short and long escapes. One of the small island’s standout features is its cobbled paths and hiking paths that pass through forests and lead to wonderful coves and unique beaches.

Among the most popular spots for swimming and bathing under the Aegean sun are Xyla , Poisses , Otzia , Spathi and Koundouros , with azure waters crashing on the golden sand and pebbly beaches. Nature lovers will rejoice with Kea’s dense vegetation, in contrast to the rest of the Cycladic islands. With forests of royal oak, much of the island is part of the Natura 2000 protection network.

Perhaps the most impressive landmark on the island, near Ioulida, is the Lion of Kea . Carved from a boulder and sporting an enigmatic smile, it has been welcoming travelers and protecting the island from nymphs for centuries. History buffs can also explore the ancient Tower of Agia Marina and the prehistoric settlement of Agia Eirini .

The nightlife in Kea peaks over the summer, with bars, clubs and cafes dotted throughout the island, while more romantic souls will appreciate the open-air cinema in Korissia or enjoying the sunset with a cocktail or glass of wine by the sea.

10 – Kythnos, Steeped in Traditional Charm

Kythnos Island, Greece

Kythnos, in the heart of the Cyclades, beckons travelers looking to explore beyond the typical tourist trails, offering a blend of natural wonders, ancient history and gorgeous beaches. Island vacations can be a blissful combination of thrilling adventures, sun-kissed beaches, and vibrant cultures. Some islands offer adventure and water activities, others offer a tranquil escape. But the best islands are a marriage of the two.

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Nearly 165,000 T+L readers completed the 2023 survey, an increase of nearly 25 percent over pre-pandemic voting levels. A total of more than 685,000 votes were cast across over 8,500 unique properties (hotels, cities, cruise lines, etc.).

Islands were specifically rated on the criteria below:

  • Natural attractions/beaches
  • Activities/sights
  • Restaurants/food
  • People/friendliness

For each characteristic, respondents could choose a rating of excellent, above average, average, below average, or poor. The final scores are averages of these responses.

The top three favorites are iconic island getaways: Australia’s Great Barrier Reef Islands, The Maldives, and Indonesia’s Bali. Greece, which has more than 6,000 islands and islets, has three winners on the list: Paros (No. 11); Rhodes and the Dodecanese (No. 19); and Santorini (No. 25). Portugal had two (Madeira at No. 4 and the Azores at No. 17) and Thailand had two in the top 10 (No. 5 Phuket and No. 7 Koh Samui.)

Read on to discover why Australia’s Great Barrier Reef Islands claimed the No. 1 spot and which other islands were crowned the world’s best.

Overall trip was wonderful - quite happy with hotels booked and guidance that was provided. Played huge role in having wonderful vacation. However, guidance and road-map could be better as in two separate instances it was guided to visit last attraction of the day to be away from hotel and then to drive back for the stay. Either different hotel that is closer to last attraction of the day, or move last attraction as part of following day's agenda. This certainly caused unpleasant experiences on those 2 days. Other than that everything else was fine and we loved it.

Vik and Eugene were amazing! They were extremely engaged with the group the entire time and made it a lot of fun. I learned a ton about Iceland from Vik’s endearing and comedic stories, and she presented the information in such an elegant and professional way. I would absolutely book another tour!

This was my #1 favorite thing I did in Iceland, despite having a ridiculous number of exciting adventures and seeing so many beautiful sights! The lagoon itself is just gorgeous, with beautiful icebergs and adorable seals lounging about. Our guide shared a wealth of information about the lagoon and the ice formations it held as well as a number of personal stories and mishaps that have happened on other boat tours. It was truly entertaining and breathtaking at the same time! My sister and I consider this to be a must-do for anyone else traveling to Iceland!

This was my first trip to Iceland and also as a solo traveler. I chose Guide to Iceland to plan my trip. I had the most amazing 9-day self-drive itinerary to discover the beauty of Iceland. The staff at Guide to Iceland were very quicky and helpful to answer any questions or to make changes to my plans.

Visiting Jokulsarlon

Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon is a stunning attraction that is always a favourite of visitors and locals. The lagoon is made up of a mixture of fresh water and sea water and iconic for the giant icebergs that dominate the landscape. Standing at up to 30-metres tall, the icebergs are cast in contrasting milky whites and fantastic electric icy blues.

Breiðamerkurjökull glacier crawls forward with intimidating force and weight, collecting in its margins glacial deposits of black sand and gravel which make striking patterns on the ice and subsequent icebergs. As the glacier retreats, it continuously creates icebergs of over 1000-years old ice that are often patterned by ash from historical eruptions. No two iceberg are the same, and you could spend hours finding fascinating shapes with no end to photographic opportunities. However silly this sounds, please do not try to stand on the icebergs as it is extremely dangerous.

The lake started taking form around 1935 when the glacier began to recede due to warming temperatures and is now the deepest in Iceland at 248 m (814 ft). Over the last 15-years, the lake is said to have doubled in size, and it is predicted that as the glacier continues to recede, it will leave a dramatic fjord behind. Sadly, warming global temperatures and the shrinking of glaciers are especially visible and Iceland, providing only further impetus to catch these icy wonders while we can.

Jökulsárlón is conveniently located on the Highway 1 road between Skaftafell nature reserve and the picturesque town of Höfn. If you are driving the ring-road around Iceland, this is a stop you do not want to miss and a destination you will want to include if you are planning a visit to the South Coast. Many tour operators offer guided trips to the lagoon if you are not driving yourself, most often combined with other exciting attractions such as the waterfalls of South Iceland . If departing from Reykjavík in the winter, do consider how much you time you have, because although a fantastic destination for the northern lights, you may not want to drive all the way back to the capital in icy conditions in the dark.

You can enjoy this wonder of Iceland from the shore or if you would like to get up close and personal with these ancient icy giants you can take a zodiac boat or amphibious boat tour guided by an expert. Around the corner is the legendary Diamond Beach where the icebergs sometimes wash up, glistening in the light in stark contrast to the black sandy beach they upon which they rest.

The golden hours of sunset and sunrise are exceptional times to witness this ethereal lake, especially if you are passionate about photography. Whatever time you visit, you can spend hours mesmerised by the luminous ice, and you could return several times and always be guaranteed a unique scene.

Jökulsárlón is appropriate for any age and budget and is a guaranteed unforgettable experience leaving you in no doubt of why it is called the Crown Jewel of Iceland.

Jökulsárlón has been used as a Hollywood location for such movies as James Bond films A View to Kill and Die Another Day as well as Lara Croft Tomb Raider and has featured in popular US television show, The Amazing Race. It is easy to understand why as the serene procession of ice is hypnotising and the plentiful wildlife of seals and birds only adds to the wonder.
