Guitarist Steve Hackett joined Genesis in 1971, making his band debut on the Nursery Cryme album which enjoyed a greater commercial success in Europe than the UK. After extensive touring, the band were encouraged, by audience reactions, to further experiment with ever longer compositions and develop their ability to incorporate strong narratives. This, in turn, allowed frontman Peter Gabriel more opportunity to indulge in the theatrics which helped to raise the band's profile.

"I think Foxtrot was a terrific achievement for Genesis at that time," says Steve Hackett. "I think there is not one weak track on the album, they all have their strong points and I'm really looking forward to doing the whole album live."

Foxtrot was critically acclaimed and became the first Genesis album to make the UK album charts. The first track, the sci-fi influenced Watcher of the Skies became a fan favourite and perennial live set opener while Get 'Em Out By Friday was a cutting slice of social comment about concrete tower blocks replacing aging slums, driven not by concern for communities but by the greed of developers.

Hackett was the lead writer of Can-Utility and the Coastliners , featuring some particularly strong musical ideas, and also contributed his classically-inspired solo piece Horizons. "The original version was a rough mix but there was something about it. A rough monitor mix can have things that something more considered won't necessarily possess. I liked the sound of the rough mix, so we went with that."

The album's highlight was the 23-minute epic Supper's Ready which remains a concert favourite and featured on Hackett's recent Seconds Out tour. " 'Supper's Ready' was a sojourn, an odyssey and something that goes down very, very well with audiences now." Hackett adds. "As part of 'Second's Out' I've been playing the whole of that again, it really has stood the test of time. "

" We were a young, struggling band at that time. By the time we were doing 'Foxtrot', the band was becoming more ambitious. 'Foxtrot' is a must for fans of the early Genesis work. Fifty years ago? It doesn't feel like those ideas are fifty years old because it was-genre defining, rather than following trends. It still sounds current, now. "

Steve Hackett Bringing Genesis’ ‘Foxtrot’ Tour to North America

Former Genesis guitarist Steve Hackett announced North American tour dates for his Foxtrot at Fifty show.

He’ll perform 29 concerts, kicking off in Montreal on Oct. 3 and winding up in Los Angeles on Nov. 18. Along with a complete performance of Foxtrot , the shows will also feature a selection of “Hackett highlights.”

“ Foxtrot was a hybrid of a lot of different styles,” the guitarist recently told Ramzine of the 1972 album, the first Genesis LP to make the Top 20. “At the time, Genesis were a band pulling in a lot of different directions as we all had so many different influences. Tony Banks was into Vaughan Williams, Phil [Collins] was interested in big bands, [Peter] Gabriel was into soul music, [Mike] Rutherford was into folk and Led Zeppelin and I was into blues and baroque music.”

He added that “We were a young struggling band without much in the way of a clear sense of direction, but knowing we wanted to do something exceptional. And I think we pulled it off. Foxtrot was a terrific achievement for Genesis at the time. There’s not one weak track on the album, they all have their strong points and I’m looking forward to performing the whole album live.”

Steve Hackett

Steve Hackett has announced his latest tour in support of Genesis 's 1972 album Foxtrot . Hackett's Foxtrot At Fifty + Hackett Highlights will take place in September and October next year.

Hackett joined Genesis in 1971 after answering an ad in Melody Maker , and made his studio debut on the Nursery Cryme album, released at the end of that year. Audience reaction to the album's longer compositions and onstage theatrics encouraged them to experiment further, and Foxtrot was the result.

“I think Foxtrot was a terrific achievement for Genesis at that time,” says Hackett. “I think there is not one weak track on the album, they all have their strong points and I’m really looking forward to doing the whole album live.

Foxtrot Tour

The Foxtrot Tour [1] [2] was a United Kingdom, European and North American concert tour by English rock band Genesis . It began in September 1972 and ended in August 1973 in Reading, Berkshire, England.

The show at the National Stadium in Dublin on 28 September 1972 marked the debut of singer Peter Gabriel 's onstage costumes, which would become a signature of Genesis' image in his period with the band and helped increase their popularity. "It was to copy the painting on the cover of our new album, Foxtrot , with a fox in a red dress," Gabriel explained to Mark Blake . "I had already bought a fox's head and then I nicked a red dress from my wife's wardrobe… There was real shock when I walked onstage. But also from the band, because I didn't tell them I was doing it. But it got us on the front of the Melody Maker ." [3]

The Genesis Live album was recorded on the tour's February 1973 UK leg.

This Is a Film About the Black Keys

The Black Keys and managers Irving Azoff and Steve Moir have parted ways after the sudden and thoroughly publicized cancellation of the band’s North American arena tour previously scheduled for the fall.

A rep for Azoff confirmed the split to Variety late Thursday, calling it an “amicable parting”; a rep for the group did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The news was first reported by the New York Times.

But ticket prices have also reached a new peak, and combined with the bad press the industry has received amid the Justice Department’s recently filed but long-expected antitrust lawsuit against Ticketmaster owner Live Nation, many fans have apparently decided to be more selective with their spending.

'Get Me To The Church Dance on Time': Ballroom social dance set for June 8 in Mount Kisco

foxtrot band tour

My introduction to dancing in a church hall came in sixth grade, when a gaggle of energetic boys and girls gathered to learn ballroom dance at the Congregational church in rural Granby, Connecticut.

Fifty-nine years later, I’ve come full circle, helping to organize a social dance on Saturday, June 8 in the historic parish hall at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Mount Kisco, in collaboration with Barbara Antes of Westchester Ballroom.

There’s lots of joy to share in partner dancing, and church halls have long stood as welcoming gathering places for dancers of all sorts.

Antes and I conjured up the event while taking a pause from dancing one March evening at Lucy’s in Pleasantville during Hudson Valley Swing Dance's monthly swing dance. After thinking it was an idea worth pursuing, the band struck up the fetching tune, “Get Me To The Church on Time,” from the musical, “My Fair Lady.”

“We can call our event Get Me To The Church Dance on Time,” I mused.

And that’s what we are calling our inaugural dance, set for 7 p.m., with a free lesson in the Lindy Hop at 6:30 p.m. taught by international swing performer Lauren Bova. Tickets are $20 at the door.

DJ Rich Barnett will spin tunes for a variety of dance styles — ballroom dances such as the waltz, foxtrot, merengue, and swing. We’ll also dance to singers Sean and Valerie, who will croon oldies, Motown hits, and standards.

A lifelong journey of dances in church halls

I’ve long dreamed of hosting a dance at St. Mark’s, the congregation led by my great-grandfather, the Rev. Epiphanius Wilson, in the 1890s. It’s in the parish hall of the church, designed by noted 20 th -century church architect Bertram Goodhue, with an expansive wood floor and a high arched ceiling.

Since those junior high dances in Granby, I’ve found myself dancing regularly at houses of worship along my lifelong journey in social dance.

In the late 1970s, we danced in the parish hall at Christ Christ Cambridge, the Episcopal church in Harvard Square that hosted a weekly Dance Free event. There, a community of dancers improvised barefoot to a broad range of music — from a driving reggae romp to a lilting Chopin sonata or a rollicking Irish jig.

Footage provided by Corey Spears:

In New York, my church hall dance tour continued, with leather-soled dance shoes aiding my movement. I danced to hard-driving Zydeco bands at the Asbury Crestwood Methodist Church in Yonkers in the early 1990s and at the United Universalist Congregation in Croton-on-Hudson in the 2000s.

In the early 2000s, the New York Swing Dance Society’s monthly soirees took place in the basement ballroom of St. Jean Baptiste Church on East 76 th Street and Lexington Avenue in Manhattan. By 2022, I was swinging my partner at the monthly contra dances at St. John's Evangelical Church in Poughkeepsie.

On Saturday nights these days, I’ll drive an hour south to the monthly Swing Remix dances with live swing bands that draw big crowds on Saturday nights to the sanctuary of Good Shepherd-Faith Presbyterian Church on West 66 th Street in Manhattan.

On Sunday afternoons each month, there’s a 45-minute drive north to Hudson Valley Community Dance's swing event at the New Beginnings CMA parish hall in the town of Poughkeepsie.

So it’s dance time at St. Mark’s this Saturday. Sure is nice to have a church dance so close to home.

Keanu Reeves' band Dogstar announces summer 2024 tour for their first album in 20 years

foxtrot band tour

Keanu Reeves and his band Dogstar are going back on the road.

Following the group's first performance in 20 years last summer, Dogstar announced Tuesday that its members are embarking on the Summer Vacation Tour 2024 across North America.

"We can’t wait to see everyone! Thank you all for all the love and support," drummer Rob Mailhouse commented under the band's Instagram post. "We can feel it every time we take the stage. ❤️"

Dogstar, currently on tour in Europe, will be visiting 29 cities starting with the Indiana State Fair on Aug. 8. Their last show is Dana Point, California's Ohana Fest on Sept. 27.

The pre-sale begins Wednesday at noon local time; tickets can be found at dogstarofficial.com .

Last October, Dogstar — which comprises Reeves, Mailhouse and guitarist/vocalist Bret Domrose — came out with its first album in two decades, a 12-track record titled "Somewhere Between the Power Lines and Palm Trees." It was released by their own label, Dillon Street Records and featured their single "Everything Turns Around."

The "John Wick" star, the alt-rock band's bassist, formed the band with Mailhouse and the group's original guitarist and lead singer Gregg Miller in 1991.

Before ending their 20-year hiatus with a performance at BottleRock Napa Valley music festival in northern California last May, Reeves told  Billboard  that being with Dogstar was "something I’ve always missed."

"I missed playing together, I missed writing together, I missed doing shows together," he said. "We came to a spot where we weren’t playing anymore, and I missed it … Once we started to play, and it felt good, and really positive and creative, that’s when it was like, 'OK, let’s make this happen.'"

"I think all three of us just said, ‘Well, if we’re going to do this, let’s make a record,'" Reeves said. Domrose added, "We just knew that there was ‘X’ amount of time, and we needed to make the most of it. We just locked on as wanting to make this record, and it happened pretty quickly."

At the Napa Valley festival, the band played tracks from the previous albums, 1996’s "Our Little Visionary" and 2000’s "Happy Ending," as well as several songs from their yet-unreleased "Somewhere Between the Power Lines and Palm Trees."

Three months later, Dogstar went on to tour two dozen cities in North America and Japan in its Somewhere Between the Power Lines and Palm Trees Tour.
