TSA will not allow you to charge these devices or the batteries on the aircraft.

Gun lighters

Gun lighters can be highly problematic in an airport for a couple of reasons.

For one, some of these look like realistic firearms and bringing firearms through an airport has specific regulations that you have to comply with so that you don’t face stiff penalties.

Second, these are larger lighters that are prohibited in both carry on and checked baggage.

Bottom line: avoid bringing any lighter that looks like a gun or any other type of weapon (e.g., grenades).

Lithium battery powered lighters

Truly empty lighters would be best in your checked baggage. Probably a good idea to include a note telling TSA that the lighters are empty, too.

I’ll never again try and fly with a standard (liquid fuel) Zippo lighter again. Had TSA in ATL confiscate the insert for mine from carry on. Had agent, supervisor, and manager all insist it was NOT permitted BUT could put it in checked luggage (clearly AGAINST the rules). I’ll stick with paper matches.

not knowing the rules, i didn’t bring any of my lighters. what i can’t understand stand is for the life of me here in the denver airport there isn’t one shop that even sell a bic lighter. why? what’s the thought process? especially if they are allowed by tsa.

If I’m not mistaken (and I could be!) the disposable Bic type lighters are all Butane (liquified gas) which aren’t allowed in the cabin because the lower atmospheric pressure could cause them to leak and/or flare up more upon lighting than at sea level. Old style Zippo (liquid fuel) lighters don’t have either of those issues (gas leaking or flare up) and so are allowed. Actually, the flare up isn’t an issue because you can’t light ANY lighters (or matches) in the airplane, so they must just be concerned with the leakage effect.

This proposal would help the DOT 'more easily penalize airlines' that damage wheelchairs

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg unveiled a new proposal Thursday aimed at improving air travel for passengers with disabilities.

Under the proposed rule set forth by the Department of Transportation, airlines would be mandated to adhere to stringent standards, guaranteeing prompt and dignified assistance for passengers with disabilities. Enhanced training protocols for airline staff (and their contractors), coupled with specified actions to safeguard passengers and their wheelchairs during transport, aim to underscore the DOT's commitment to passenger safety and accessibility.

"It's an important part of how we change the way that airlines operate and change the way that travelers with disabilities can move around the country and around the world," Buttigieg said during a call with media. "This news compliments a range of actions by the Biden-Harris administration to make transportation more accessible, including launching the first Bill of Rights for airline passengers with disabilities and publishing a final rule that will increase the size and accessibility of airplane bathrooms ."

The proposed rule would cover wheelchairs and assistive devices as defined by the DOT , like crutches, canes, walkers, prosthetics, and hearing aids, among others.

During USA TODAY's yearlong series highlighting the people behind airline damage to wheelchairs, over 30 respondents said some version of the phrase "breaking my wheelchair is like breaking my legs."

What does the proposed rule tackle?

• Penalties for mishandling wheelchairs, and other assistive devices: The proposal would make those mishandlings an automatic violation of the Air Carrier Access Act, allowing DOT to "more easily penalize airlines and hold them accountable when a passenger’s mobility device is damaged." It would also require airlines to promptly repair or replace damaged wheelchairs and provide a loaner.
• Safe assistance: The rule would require enhanced airline employee and airline contractor training that includes hands-on training, for those who physically assist passengers with mobility disabilities or handle passengers’ wheelchairs. This includes the prompt return of a delayed wheelchair to the passenger's final destination within 24 hours.
• Improved standards on planes: The rule proposes improved performance standards for onboard wheelchairs on twin-aisle aircraft and small aircraft and notifications after loading and unloading a wheelchair.

"This is about making sure that both the physical safety of passengers and the physical condition of mobility devices are contemplated and dignified," Buttigieg added.

The announcement has already garnered widespread support from Assistant to the President Stephen Benjamin, Sen. Tammy Duckworth, D-Ill., disability advocates, aviation workers, and stakeholders convening for a discussion at the White House.

"This is really about helping passengers be better empowered to make use of the rights and protections that they already have," asserted Buttigieg.

The proposed rule will be seeking comments from the public for 60 days after it is published in the Federal Register.

This Order and the included DOT Travel Manual establish Departmental policy and guidance on all aspects of Federal travel and also identify key roles and associated responsibilities for DOT personnel. Airlines sue Department of Transportation over fee disclosure rules

Major U.S. airlines are suing the U.S. Transportation Department over a new rule requiring upfront disclosure of airline fees, the latest clash between air carriers and the Biden administration.

Lobbying group Airlines for America, along with American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, JetBlue Airways, Hawaiian Airlines and Alaska Airlines, filed suit against the DOT in the U.S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals in Louisiana late on Friday, according to a copy of the suit seen by Reuters.

The DOT issued final rules last month requiring airlines and ticket agents to disclose service fees alongside the airfare, saying it would help consumers avoid unneeded or unexpected fees.

The airline group said in a statement on Monday the department's rule would confuse consumers and that its "attempt to regulate private business operations in a thriving marketplace is beyond its authority."

The airlines' previously unreported lawsuit calls the rule "arbitrary, capricious, an abuse of discretion and otherwise contrary to law."

DOT said Monday it "will vigorously defend our rule protecting people from hidden junk fees and ensuring travelers can see the full price of a flight before they purchase a ticket."

The agency said consumers are overpaying $543 million in fees annually, and airlines are getting that additional revenue from consumers who are surprised by fees and "then need to pay a higher fee at the airport to check a bag."

Major airlines charge higher fees to check bags if travelers do not pay in advance or wait until the time of the flight. Earlier this year,  many large U.S. airlines  boosted fees for checked baggage.

DOT said fees for baggage or flight changes "must be individually disclosed the first time that fare and schedule information is provided on the airline's online platform, and cannot be displayed through a hyperlink."

The department also said the rule will end "bait-and-switch tactics some airlines use to disguise the true cost of discounted flights." It prohibits airlines from advertising promotional discounts off a "low base fare that does not include all mandatory carrier-imposed fees."

The airline group called the rule "a bad solution in search of a problem." It said airlines already provide consumers with complete disclosure of all fees associated with air travel before they purchase a ticket.

Southwest Airlines, which expressed support for provisions in the USDOT proposal, did not join the lawsuit.

U.S. airlines collected nearly $6.8 billion in baggage fees in 2022, and $5.5 billion in the first nine months of 2023.

The rule requires airlines to inform consumers that seats are guaranteed and that they are not required to pay extra. Airlines must provide the following notice: "A seat is included in your fare. You are not required to purchase a seat assignment to travel."

The airlines have not challenged a separate rule finalized last month by DOT that would require automatic cash refunds for canceled flights when passengers choose not to take a new flight.

"Too often, airlines drag their feet on refunds or rip folks off with junk fees," President Joe Biden said last month, arguing the mandate will protect passengers "from surprise fees."

Airlines Sue US Over Fee Disclosure Rules, Citing Overreach (1)

Several major US airlines and their lobbying group sued the US Transportation Department over new regulations mandating up-front disclosure of certain fees, in a fight over rules the agency says could mean big savings for travelers.

The lawsuit was filed Friday at the 5th US Circuit Court of Appeals by industry trade group Airlines for America and the carriers, including American Airlines , Delta Air Lines , United Airlines and JetBlue Airways . They claim the department overstepped its legal authority in issuing the new requirements and called them “arbitrary, capricious” and “an abuse of discretion.”

Airlines for America called them “a bad solution in search of a problem.”

The final rules, unveiled last month, require carriers and ticket agents to clearly communicate their extra charges up front for checked luggage and carry-on bags and for canceling or changing reservations. The department said at the time that they would save fliers more than half a billion dollars a year by helping them avoid surprise fees.

The legal battle will be a key test of new consumer protections sought by the Transportation Department. The agency has also issued final rules requiring airlines to provide automatic refunds if flights are canceled or significantly delayed. It has plans, at various stages of drafting, for regulations that would expand rights for passengers who use wheelchairs and to allow parents to sit with their children without being charged a fee.

Airlines for America said in a statement that the carriers already provide fee disclosures and that the new rules “will greatly confuse consumers who will be inundated with information that will only serve to complicate the buying process.”

The Transportation Department vowed to fight the suit.

“We will vigorously defend our rule protecting people from hidden junk fees and ensuring travelers can see the full price of a flight before they purchase a ticket,” department spokesman Sean Manning said in a statement. “Many air travelers will be disappointed to learn that the airline lobby is suing to stop these common-sense protections.”

The suit was reported earlier by Reuters.
