Kylee's Empty House Tour

H ello! It’s Kylee here to show you some more of our new home! Just a few weeks ago we moved into our new Cape Cod style home (or just a cape depending on where you live!). To be honest I still can’t believe it’s really ours! While we owned our townhouse for years, this still feels kind of like my first real home. No shared walls, a yard to take care of, more rooms than I know what to do with…am I a real adult now? How do I pick a lawnmower? When does one prune the bushes? So much to learn. ;)

I shared a few peeks of our new home here , but today I wanted to give you more of a full empty tour!

(Update 2022: you can see more photos of our home since we’ve settled in a bit here !).

Kylee's Empty House Tour

I’ve always loved the look of a long driveway that leads to a set back detached garage, so that’s one of the features we loved about the home!

Kylee's Empty House Tour

You enter the house directly into the living room, so one design challenge I am working on right away is creating a welcoming, entry that will *feel* like its own dedicated space.

Kylee's Empty House Tour

I can’t wait until it gets chilly enough to use the gas fireplace! We loved having one in our previous home and are looking forward to having one again.

Kylee's Empty House Tour

From the living room you can see into the dining room and kitchen, After years of eating around a kitchen island, it looks like we actually need to get a dining table now! The double arches make my heart flutter and I just love how this space is open, but still feels like individual rooms. While we looked at houses that were all different styles in terms of how open they were, there is something about homes with more unique floor plans and lots of rooms that feel so cozy and homey to me.

Kylee's Empty House Tour

I’m still a bit shocked that we ended up with a such a beautifully remodeled kitchen. We saw lots of homes in our house search and even the remodeled ones usually had quite a few features I wouldn’t have chosen, but this house has so many things I would have picked for myself! The housing market was brutal and after months of searching and losing homes (I shared more about that in this post ) it was looking like we were going to have to lower our expectations and started to accept that a remodel may be in our future.

Kylee's Empty House Tour

But, we got so lucky with this house! We’d noticed it when it was first listed, but it went pending right away (of course!). Then a few weeks later we happened to be visiting Portland and saw that the sale had fallen through and it was back on the market! So, we walked into an open house and fell in love and hoped that due to the circumstances, we might actually have a chance. And we did have a chance! We weren’t the only offer, but we were able to get ours accepted!

Kylee's Empty House Tour

Overall, I love everything about the kitchen–the marble counters, the butcher block island, the paint colors, the light that streams in…I spend a lot of time cooking in here and it’s been bringing me so much joy! I may change the light above the sink and maybe eventually add some pendant lights over the island, but for now it’s perfect. Oh and in case you missed it, I already wrote a blog post about how I filled those glass front cabinets! You can read that post here (I also shared some of the kitchen sources in that post like our cabinet paint color).

Kylee's Empty House Tour

The house has three bathrooms and every single one of them was done so nicely! This one might be my favorite in the house because of all the gorgeous tile! This is the bathroom on the main floor between two bedrooms. I will spare you photos of the bedrooms, because they’re really just two boxes. We will be using one for a home office and one as a guest room! I’ll share those when they’re looking cute. ;)

Kylee's Empty House Tour

Then downstairs we have a finished basement. Pictured above is the staircase down and a bathroom on the left (even the basement bathroom was done nicely!) and another bedroom to the right.

Kylee's Empty House Tour

The basement bedroom came with this pull down murphy bed and will be another great guest space for us! I imagine our upstairs guest room will be for short term guests and this will be for someone staying longer or who comes with kids or dogs (hi Mom and Dad and Jack and Lily!).

Kylee's Empty House Tour

Then there is this big, open space with a fireplace and a space for a TV. This space isn’t on our priority list, but eventually we would like new floors and paint down here. Maybe a big cozy sectional for movie nights?

Kylee's Empty House Tour

And on the other side of the open space is a wet bar/mini kitchen. We aren’t entirely sure how we are going to use this space yet so TBD.

Kylee's Empty House Tour

A whole laundry ROOM! In my townhouse I just had a laundry closet so this feels like a luxury. I’m thinking wallpaper may be just what’s needed to spark a little joy into this space.

Kylee's Empty House Tour

Now for the final space, the primary suite, which is basically the whole upstairs/converted attic.

Kylee's Empty House Tour

We have plans to get new hardwood floors up here soon. As anyone doing house projects right now knows, there are lots of delays on supplies, but hopefully this will be done in the next few weeks!

Kylee's Empty House Tour

I’m still debating on paint colors, but we may actually transform this space with something darker to be a bit more moody and cozy.

Kylee's Empty House Tour

The primary bathroom is a dream! The herringbone floors, the double vanity…I’m obsessed. We’ve considered a couple minor updates to make it more our own, like new lights and hardware, but we are enjoying it as it is for now.

Kylee's Empty House Tour

Also, this shower. Can you even?! There’s a little nook back there behind the shower that is kind of wasted space that I’m considering putting a vanity table to do my makeup. And to the left there is a HUGE walk in closet. Like, almost more space that we need kind of huge (not that I’m complaining!).

Thanks for coming along on this tour! We’ve already settled in a bit and started decorating so I’m sure I will be back soon with updates. If you follow along on my Instagram , I’ll be sharing some of our progress in real time!

House Beautiful's Most Popular Home Tours of 2022

See the spaces our readers fell in love with this year.

Carriage House by Shannon Roberts (Savannah, GA)

blue kitchen

In 2020, life handed Knoxville, TN, interior designer Shannon Roberts some particularly sour lemons: a cancer diagnosis just as Covid-19 began swirling the globe. He turned it into lemonade—and fast. “Two weeks before the world shut down, my husband and I purchased a second home in Savannah, Georgia,” says Roberts. “The carriage house (all 800 square feet it) was fair game for a renovation.”

Colorful Bedroom by Angie Lane (Tecumseh, MI)

detail of bedroom interior

The bedroom in Angie Lane 's circa-1860 Italianate farmhouse in Tecumseh, Michigan, needed addressing. "It was a mattress on a platform frame and not much else," confesses the designer, who finally committed to sprucing it up to shoot for the cover of her book, Midwest Modern Manifesto . "I ran with the idea of the room as an abstract version of a landscape painting," she explains.

TOUR THE HOME

Colonial Revival by Isabel Ladd (Lexington, KY)

living room interior

"Explosive, vivid, saturated.” This is how Lexington, Kentucky–based interior designer Isabel Ladd describes her home, a 1936 colonial that she renovated in "…colors and patterns that bring me immense joy. It reflects how I dress and live: very passionately and in full color."

Historic Townhouse by the Novogratzes (NYC)

living room the novogratz

For decades a bubble gum–pink stucco townhouse, the exterior of Cortney and Robert Novogratz's new family home in New York City is now gold. This, of course, is what the Novogratzes, a married design and branding powerhouse, do: “We aren’t afraid to take a falling-down building and brighten it up. It can totally transform the energy of the neighborhood,” Cortney says.

Whimsical Studio by Rudy Saunders (NYC)

blue victorian style studio

As an interior designer at Dorothy Draper & Company Inc. , Rudy Saunders has had plenty of experience working in exquisite homes. But he had his work cut out for him at the pre-war studio apartment on the Upper East Side where he lives: The space is tiny—only about 375 square feet—and it’s a rental, meaning major renovations were out of the question.

Cottage Bungalow by Shavonda Gardner (Sacramento, CA)

While it might have been the moody living room that graced House Beautiful's cover, readers were obsessed with pretty much ALL of Shavonda Gardner's inviting California cottage. One standout room was her English country-inspired kitchen, whose mix of colors is, shall we say, chef's kiss.

Modern Home by Jess Cooney (Berkshires, MA)

jess cooney

Sited in Egremont, Massachusetts, the house that Jess Cooney 's clients had bought featured a new, all-white kitchen, along with sky-high windows overlooking dreamy mountain views. Then a tree fell through the roof during a storm (thankfully, the house was empty), and the area sustained significant water damage. “The accident made the decision for them,” says Cooney. “We gutted the kitchen, painting the cabinetry bright blue so it really popped in the open living space.”

English Manor by Kim Armstrong (Texas)

interior

Designer Kim Armstrong’s clients, newly retired, were ready to move to the countryside. Their family was expanding as their children were creating families of their own. A new house with an open-concept floor plan had high ceilings that made window treatments a puzzle. But “the most challenging” part of the project, says Armstrong, “was to create intimate space” in the large open floor plan.

1930s Cabin by Emily Janak and Northworks (Jackson, WY)

kitchen island

Tearing into the walls of their new 1950s ranch house, designer Emily Janak and her husband, architect Adam Janak of Northworks , discovered an architecture lover's version of buried treasure: an original 1936 log cabin that had been covered up with drywall in the ’60s. “It was like finding gold,” says Janak. Because the pine timber had been sealed up for decades, it was in pristine condition.

Pop House by Atelier ND (Amsterdam)

colorful mid century inspired living room

Carice van Houten, best known for her role as Melisandre on HBO’s Game of Thrones , and her boyfriend, actor Guy Pearce, had just bought a 1918 brownstone in a suburb of the Dutch capital. The walls were all white, but Van Houten describes herself as “a walking color explosion, a female Peter Pan, a bit like Pippi Longstocking… My trademark is my eclecticism.” A kaleidoscopic upgrade was needed.

HB's 2022 Whole Home (Atlanta)

whole home exterior

Breathing new life into an old house takes a village. HB partnered with Ladisic Fine Homes , architectural firm Pak Heydt & Associates , as well as even interior designers to transform this tudor-style house in Atlanta. Designers include: Ariene Bethea, Ashley Gilbreath, Brynn Olson, DuVäl Reynolds, Jonathan Savage, Keia McSwain, Leanne Ford, Lisa Adams, Mark Williams, Niki Papadopoulos, Whittney Parkinson, and Zoë Feldman.

Marble Kitchen by Laura McCroskey (Kansas City)

laura mcroskey kitchen

When it came to designing the 328-square-foot kitchen of her newly built home, Laura McCroskey’s client, Becky Hillyard, had one request: “No marble!” The lifestyle influencer, founder of the blog Cella Jane, had asked her 642,000 Instagram followers for advice on which surface material to use—and nearly everyone cautioned against marble, since it’s so easy to stain.

Industrial Loft by Alison Victoria (Atlanta)

interior

Alison Victoria had never considered herself an apartment kind of girl. But when she laid eyes on the Stacks lofts, a converted 1880s textile mill in Atlanta, the HGTV star immediately knew she had to buy a unit there—even if only to flip it.

Cottonland Castle by Chip and Jo Gaines (Waco, TX)

jo and chip gaines during renovation

The 1913 stone manor house, originally modeled after a small German castle along the Rhine River, has a history and foundation dating back to 1890—not to mention a permanent place in local Waco, Texas, lore. “It sits in the center of a neighborhood downtown, so if you live nearby, you’ve driven past it hundreds of times,” Chip Gaines explains.

Forever Farmhouse by Carolyn Miller

dining room interior

"It was what I call a Frank Lloyd Wrong ," says designer Carolyn Miller of the 1930s Pacific Palisades farmhouse that had fallen victim to a series of bad renovations in the 30 years since its owners moved in. The clients needed help, Miller recalls: "They wanted to bring the house into its best possible state. And they trusted me to do it."

Empty house tour – welcome to our new home.

Y’all, it’s here. We’ve officially been in our home for about two weeks weeks. And I’m finally sharing our empty house tour ! The morning before we closed, we did our final walk-through. And I kicked everyone out of the house to video a very short, quick little seven minute video of the entire house top to bottom. ?

I knew it would be my only opportunity to capture it completely empty. (Seriously, our car trunk and back seat was loaded with clothes!) And I’m so glad I took the time because getting it photo-ready again is going to take some tiiiiime, y’all. #livinglavidaboxes My only regret was not taking as many photos! But near the end of that ten minutes, I was starting to feel guilty about my family sitting around outside for me, so I tried to hurry it up!

So while I did not get a chance to photograph every space, I tried to hit a few of the main areas: the great room, the kitchen, the screened in porch. And of course I snapped a quick shot of our master bathroom tile because I’m obsessed. If you want to see more stills, check out my we’re building a house tour which captured a few more shots.

Empty House Tour

Alright y’all, here it is: our empty house tour.  Welcome to our new home!

When you walk in the front door, a staircase to the second floor is to your right. To your left is our dining room. Take a few steps forward and this is your view.

One of the things that sold us on this floor plan was the two story great room. I also love all of the windows on the back of the house. As someone who takes a lot of photos, natural light was something on my must-have list!

Taking one more step forward, you get a better view of the kitchen. To the right of the kitchen, there is a breakfast room with a large window.

In this next shot, I’m standing in the corner of the breakfast room near the door to the porch. We opted for classic white cabinets with a navy blue center island. The backsplash is a slightly more creamy white. I love the crackled detail of the tiles!

Now if you turned directly around, you’d see the door to the screened in porch, which is on the left hand side of the fireplace.

Stepping out into this screened in porch is one of my favorites. Many of the home models we looked at had painted all of the beams a dark brown. But y’all, I am so glad we went with white! It really adds so much light to the space, especially since it’s surrounded by trees!

Aaron fought me hard on these tiles. He wanted nothing to do with the pattern! But we ended up using a couple versions of it in the house, and I love it!

Unfortunately, I somehow I completely skipped over filming the second master suite. I really was trying to hustle through and just walked right by it. But it is located directly underneath the first floor master and follows the same foot print. The master bathroom has different tile selections, so I will try to snap photo of that to give you a glimpse soon!

Room by Room Empty House Tour Video

And that’s it, y’all! The big new home reveal! I’m excited to continue to share with y’all as we decorate and really make it our own! You can follow along on YouTube here ! I will slowly be adding to my channel with home content and all of the fashion and beauty content you love here!

Yayyy!! it’s so beautiful! I can’t wait to see the process of you all making it your own! The exposed beams are so beautiful and I love all the tiling everywhere. Congratulations! 😀 https://www.closet-fashionista.com/

Looks beautiful! That screened in porch with fireplace is a dream! I also love all the trees in your backyard. Looks so relaxing.

Your new home is beautiful! I love your screened in porch with the fireplace and exposed beams!

Empty House Tour 2021

Welcome to my new home! My empty house tour video is finally up on my Youtube channel! I purchased this property in the Fall of 2020 for $357,000. It is 3,011 sq. ft. with 4/5 bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms. My husband and I got an amazing deal on the house! We were really lucky to get it below the asking price. Due to the competitive nature of the real estate market that we are in, it is oftentimes a bidding war. But after just one week of looking, we bought our first home and we couldn’t be happier with our decision! It has proven to be a great investment so far. However, one day, we plan to buy land and build our own custom dream home. It is one of my personal life goals that I hope to accomplish! 🙂

Overall, our house is a very traditional starter home with a lot of potential. I love the open-floor-plan concept on the main level. It is truly the heart of the home. The all-white kitchen with quartz countertops is my absolute favorite space. I just love how bright and inviting it feels here. In addition, everything is painted neutral throughout the house, which gives us a great base to work with when it comes to decorating! Having a newer home definitely has the perk of being turnkey-ready which is something we really wanted when we were looking. But our backyard could use a remodel which is something we hope to do in the future! For now, though, we are just focusing on the smaller projects. From furniture shopping to mini home renovations – slowly but surely – I can’t wait to turn this empty house into a warm + cozy home! EMPTY HOUSE TOUR! Vlog – Over 50

Good morning! It is day 3 in the new house. I thought I would give you guys an empty house tour and show you what I will be working with as I continue decorating and turning this place into a home.

While I’m very, very happy with the house’s location and I’m fairly happy with the house. There are some issues I will need to work around when I work on decorating.

The decorating style I have in mind is light, airy, and bright. I plan to have lots and lots of house plants. I’m going for a real fresh look with a little hippie thrown in. I’m really excited about decorating this place.

Come along and join me for this empty house tour. I’ll be showing you the things I like about this house and the places I’ll have to get creative to make them function better!

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Kremlin in the times of Ivan III

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you.
