20 Best Misamis Occidental Tourist Spots 2024 (+ Perangat Festival)

 alt=

“Misamis Occidental”

That was my answer to a friend’s question about my next travel destination. He then stopped, for a few seconds, thinking.

I knew what was going on. Looking at his face, it was not confusion. It was more of he knew the province but couldn’t pinpoint where it is. It was like meeting an old friend but you couldn’t remember how and where did you meet.

“Sa Visayas yan diba? Or Mindanao?” (Is that in Visayas or Mindanao?). He continued.

“Yes. Mindanao. Northern Mindanao.”

I understand that this is usually the situation when we talk about Misamis Occidental. First, we have too many Occidental and Oriental provinces in the Philippines. You really have to stand out to be recognized such as the likes of Negros or Davao.

But for Misamis, it still needs a little push. A little exposure perhaps, to be able to leave a mark in everyone’s minds that MisOcc is the next tourism destination in the country. That Misamis Occidental is definitely the place to be.

Ozamiz City Misamis Occidental

This is the purpose of this blog post – to reintroduce the beauty of Misamis Occidental. I recently joined the Laag-Laag sa MisOcc2022 by the Provincial tourism, DOT Region 10, and TPB to explore the best of what the province can offer and also celebrate the Perangat Festival.

I will share my stories and the attractions that we visited in an attempt to tickle your curiosity and start seeing the province in a new light. I hope after reading this you’ll consider visiting.

Without further ado, here are the 20 tourist spots we explored in Misamis Occidental, that you definitely shouldn’t miss. This can also be a great travel guide and resource.

Ozamiz City Misamis Occidental

1. Bawbawon Island

Located in the tranquil town of Plaridel , just a 30-minute travel from the capital city of Oroquieta lies a hidden paradise. It is covered with mangroves, surrounded by a sanctuary of rich marine biodiversity. This is Bawbawon island.

The name Bawbawon was derived from the same Visayan word which means shallow. It’s because the waters surrounding the island tend to be too shallow for motorboats during low tide. So unless you have plans of staying on the island longer, you have to leave before low tide.

Bawbawon Island

It was about lunchtime when we arrived at the port in Plaridel. After experiencing the warm Misamisnon welcome from the LGU, we then traveled to the island. We were grouped by 8 and assigned to a motorboat.

We braved through the rough waves until reaching the mangrove area where the water was calmer. After about 20 minutes of boat ride, we arrived at the shores of Bawbawon island.

Bawbawon Island

It’s so nice to see and experience another pristine beach after being stuck at home during the pandemic. I would love to walk along the shoreline but our lunch was served. I can have enough time to explore the beach after eating delicious seafood and local delicacies.

Bawbawon Island

Matakaw yarn? Haha

Bawbawon Island

The longer I stay on the island, the more I appreciate the lush coconut trees, forest, mangroves, and the beach. We spent more time relaxing, chatting with Mayor Gadwin E. Handumon and the LGUs, as well as taking more pictures.

I would love to stay longer but we have more destinations to explore in the province. And it was already low tide, we have to leave if we don’t want to get stuck on the island. Bawbawon is definitely one of the best spots to visit in the province.

2. Piduan Falls

When I posted the photos of Piduan Falls on my Jon to the World Facebook Page ( it went quite viral. LOL), a lot of people commented that it looked like Asik Asik Falls of North Cotobato.

Well, they have a point because both are considered curtain waterfalls, and both are stunning. But Piduan Falls is a charm, a beauty of its own.

Yes, Asik Asik Falls is more famous now, but Piduan falls is a new destination. A fresh offering to travelers. If you happen to explore Northern Mindanao, why don’t you try and experience Piduan falls?

Piduan Falls

Located in Don Victoriano , Piduan Falls is one of the most beautiful waterfalls that I’ve seen in a while. We explored it after visiting the town’s strawberry farms. Once we arrived at the jump-off area, we were welcomed by a clean and rushing river. It was like a prelude to the beauty that we were about to witness.

The guides said that the trekking is just 20 minutes, but with the rocky terrain, I think it took a little longer. Remember to just take your time while hiking and wear sturdy sandals and hiking shoes.

Piduan Falls

The quite long walk was worth it when we finally see the falls from afar. And as we got closer, it seemed like it was getting more stunning. The waters were visibly clear, inviting us to take a dip.

I was one of the first people to arrive, so I took advantage of it. I went straight to the falls, enjoyed its beauty, and mustered the courage to ask the staff from DOT Region 10 to take my pictures. Haha! He was nice and a good photographer too. Look!

Piduan Falls

Then lunch was served. It just feels good to enjoy food while surrounded by nature right?

After the satisfying meal, I finally gave up and answered the falls’ call to take a dip. The icy cool water was relaxing. I felt reenergized to trek back to our coaster and continue our tour.

3. Heritage town of  Jimenez

After a day of touring the province, it was already dark when we arrived in the town of Jimenez. Sir Bong Abelidas, Municipal Tourism Officer, and Mayor Jojo Chiong warmly welcomed us with their kind words and delicious food.

Jimenez is a heritage town of Misamis Occidental where you can find the San Juan Bautista Parish Church also known as Jimenez Church, hailed as one of the most intact and preserved Spanish churches in the country.

The town also showcases its old and ancestral houses that would make you feel transcended back to the Spanish colonial period. The LGU has done an amazing job of preserving these structures that they’re eyeing to be the next UNESCO Heritage site.

The drizzle outside did not hinder us from exploring the stunning Jimenez church. Oh man, the lighting outside makes the experience surreal and dramatic.

Jimenez Church

Inside, we witnessed one of the best-preserved interiors of a Roman Catholic church in the country. The impressive paintings on the ceiling and walls, which were completed in 1898, will leave everyone in awe. Upstairs is a pipe organ and a passageway to the belfry.

The next day, we were so delighted to be back in Jimenez to explore the town’s ancestral houses. I’m impressed with the amazing work that they do to preserve this cultural heritage.

Some of the noteworthy structures are the Caza de Ozamiz and Bacarro Printing Press. It would be nice to be back and have ample time to know and research intensively about each house’s story.

4. Cotta Fort

As we wrap up the first day touring the province, we had our dinner at the historic Cotta Fort in Ozamiz city. Cotta fort is one of the oldest structures in Ozamiz city which served as a defense and constabulary to avoid sudden attacks by Moro pirates along the Panguil Bay during the Spanish era. It was built in 1756 by Father Jose Ducos, and served as an outpost and shelter to many Spanish ships during colonial times. It is also a witness to many historical events and battles during Spanish and Japanese occupations.

Exploring the left side of the fort, you’ll find the Laureate Blessed Virgin of Cotta frequently visited by devotees and tourists.

Cota Fort

Sabi nila ka-look-alike ko raw itong si former Mayor or Vice Mayor of Ozamiz. Talaga ba? hehe Kaya pinicturan ko na. 😉

After learning more about history, they served us some delectable dishes for dinner. The local dish Balbacua was a big hit, a fusion of flavorful sauce and tender meat. Delicious!

We were delighted that we had a chance to visit Cotta Fort again the following day to take more photos and experience more of the rich history and heritage of this famous structure in the city.

5. Subanen Village Eco-Tourism Park

A soon-to-rise tourist destination in Tudela, Misamis Occidental is about to open next year – The Subanen Village! And we got a sneak peek of the property in our Laag-Laag sa MisOcc tour.

It was already dark and drizzling but that didn’t stop us to explore the Subanen Eco Village. This project aims to promote and preserve the Subanen culture for the next generation to enjoy. Subanen tribes (or people of the river) are the indigenous people and the first settlers of the province.

Subanen Eco Village

The houses are built with indigenous materials too. The local tourism shared that they also plan to build many amenities like cottages and a swimming pool for the comfort of the visitors.

It is expected that the property will be opened to the public by next year. So for now, we just enjoyed watching the Subanen dance and exploring the houses which will serve as an accommodation for guests.

6. Gakit sa Lopez Jaena

Lopez Jaena has a special place in my heart. The moment I got off our coaster I instantly heard one of the catchiest and most danceable local jingles in my life! Yes, in my life.

Then, we witnessed the overflowing vigor of the LGU employees dancing to the tune of Welcome to Lopez Jaena. Oh man, I know myself. I’m definitely not a dancer, but with this energy and music, you just couldn’t help but move to the groove.

Gakit sa Lopez Jaena

I told myself. Just give me 5 minutes to study the steps, and I’ll join the dance craze. Wow! Just kidding. Haha!

Lopez Jaena definitely made a warm and positive impression. And it didn’t disappoint when we visit their most popular tourist destination – The Gakit or what they call Gakit sa Lopez Jaena.

Gakit is a local word that means balsa or floating cottage because just a few minutes of boat ride from the port are numerous gakit for guests to enjoy.

Gakit sa Lopez Jaena

Makulay ang buhay. 😉

Gakit sa Lopez Jaena

The floating cottages were huge, sturdy, and can accommodate many people which is perfect for family or group gatherings. You can also do some water activities like swimming and snorkeling.

Once we went back to the port,  we were treated to delicious seafood and local dishes. Our hearts and stomachs were full in Lopez Jaena.

7. Sapang Dalaga Falls

What a nice way to end a day of adventures in Misamis Occidental by visiting Sapang Dalaga Falls.

Formerly known as Baga Falls, Sapang Dalaga Falls which is also the same name as the town is just an easy access from the main road and near the Poblacion area. No difficult hiking is needed.

Sapang Dalaga Falls

It is massive, standing at a height of 60 feet. Sapang Dalaga is a name derived from an old Visayan word that means “maiden at the creek.” That explains why there is a daunting statue of a woman just near the waterfalls. With its expression, the statue really looks very serious in doing her job – guarding the waterfalls.

8. Strawberry Farms in Don Victoriano

Who would have thought there are strawberry farms in Misamis Occidental? After arriving in Don Victoriano and experiencing the warm welcome of the LGU and its locals, we boarded 4×4 on our way to the strawberry farms.

Oh man, it  wasn’t an easy ride. There were paved roads but there are still parts that need more development. I’m sure the LGU is currently completing all the infrastructures going to the mountains where the farms are located.

Strawberry Farm Don Victoriano

OK ba back up dancers ko? hehe 🙂

Strawberry Farm Don Victoriano

Manamis namis. 😉

Upon arriving at the farm, we were welcomed by cool and relaxing weather. The temperature in the area can go as low as 15 degrees celsius perfect for propagating strawberries and crops.

The strawberries of Don Victoriano were juicy and delicious. It’s also fresh and organic. Probably the best-tasting strawberries I had in a while.

You can also pick strawberries for only 500 pesos per kilo. Strawberry jam is also available for Php 150.

9. Hoyohoy Highland Stone Chapel Adventure Park

The participants of Laag-Laag sa MisOcc2022 discovered a summer getaway in Misamis Occidental, the Hoyohoy Highland Stone Chapel Adventure Park.

Of course, this might be familiar to the locals of Tangub city, but for us coming from different parts of the country, this is a great addition to a list of cool and foggy destinations which is perfect for summer.

The highlight of this place is the stone chapel on top of a hill overlooking the mountainous MisOcc and its neighboring provinces. It is suitable for any photo ops, and also a chance to have a moment of silence and prayers.

Hoyohoy Highland Stone Chapel Adventure Park

Food is also available through catering service. Once the place is fully operational again, everyone can enjoy its zipline which is considered one of the highest and longest in Asia! ATV rides, horseback riding, and camping are available too.

10. Belvedere

Belvedere is definitely unforgettable for me and my fellow travelers on this tour. Aside from the stunning views and chilly atmosphere, the team was creative enough to incorporate Belvedere in a song to the tune of the hit, “I’ll be there” by The Jackson Five and Mariah Carey.

It goes something like, “just call my name, Belvedere.” Haha!

Belvedere is a contemporary-designed structure with a scenic view of Mt. Malindang and the city. It stands 980 meters above sea level with an approximate land area of 523 square meters. This is part of the Gardens of the World Development Project located in Brgy. Fertig Hills, Tangub City.

Belvedere

Upon reaching the top of Belvedere, you’ll experience a stunning view of the mountains and clouds while enjoying the cool weather. I just couldn’t help myself but capture this moment. Thanks to Jan, my fellow travel blogger for this photo. When you visit Tangub city, this should definitely be part of your itinerary.

11. Parola in Tangub

We experienced the most festive and warmest welcome from Tangub city. We saw kids and residents lined up on the main highway, waving with their big smiles as our coaster passed through. What a heartwarming experience.

We then stopped at the coastal area, an outdoor catwalk lead us to the Parola, a tall structure built into the sea with a restaurant. We had our sumptuous lunch there.

Parola, and its surrounding structure, is a perfect place to relax. Over the years, a restaurant was built to accommodate guests. Anyone who wants to dine at the Parola has to contact them prior to your visit to prepare the food in advance.

12. Clarin House of Suman

Suman or sticky rice cake is a favorite snack among Filipinos. Over the years, many flavors of suman were introduced, but how many flavors have you tried?

Well, at Clarin House of Suman you can taste as many as 18 flavors of suman! We experienced it when we had our breakfast there during the second day of our Laag-Laag sa MisOcc.

Clarin House of Suman

Choose your flavor.

Aside from the delicious buffet breakfast, the highlight of the day was the different flavors of suman. I’m sorry, I just couldn’t try it all because I was already full. But my favorites are cheese, chocolate, and langka .

These are the perfect pasalubong when you visit the province. The House of Suman is located in Clarin along the national highway. It’s a green building with a leaf-shaped roof near the border with Ozamiz.

13. Oroquieta Plaza and Kiosko

The lumiyagan (squid) in Oroquieta was delicious. It was the best squid dish I’ve ever tasted in my life. Seriously. You have to try the seafood dishes in MisOcc!

Aside from the sumptuous buffet breakfast, it was the warm welcome of Oroquieta that really made our visit extra special. Imagine, they even prepared a rondalla serenading us while we feasted on the lumiyagan , sinaing , suman tinambiran , broas, tocino, etc.

The Oroquieta Kiosko played a huge role in the city’s history and heritage. It was in 1887 when the kiosk was constructed together with the church, convent, and the Municipio when Oroquieta became a pueblo. Over the years, it has become an identity of the city.

In the 1920s, the Kiosk underwent a major renovation, making it sturdy and concrete. It was the time when the ownership of the plaza was transferred from the church to the municipality.

Now, the Oroquieta Kiosk and Plaza is the center of the city where people relax and enjoy. Don’t forget to visit when you travel to MisOcc.

14. Caluya Floating Cottage

It was almost sunset when we arrived in Brgy. Caluya in Sapang Dalaga to visit the Caluya Floating Cottage, but we still pushed through.

This project is vital not only for the Department of Tourism but also for the community. Regional Director May Salvana- Unchuan of DOT Region 10 shared that they took care of this community, prioritizing the income-generating tourism project despite the pandemic. Now that tourism is finally open for everyone, this destination needs the exposure it deserves.

Caluya Floating Cottage

Just a 5-minute boat ride from the port, we arrived at the floating cottages. We decided to dock into a huge cottage that can accommodate up to 50 people. Our guide said that there are many cottages that would fit depending on the customers’ needs whether for small groups or big groups.

Visitors can also enjoy many water activities such as snorkeling, swimming, and even fishing. This place is perfect for group gatherings yet still getting the serenity of nature.

15. Caluya Shrine

I know you’re familiar with Jesus Christ the Redeemer of Rio de Janiero. Well, you don’t need to travel as far as Brazil to have the same experience, because you can have that in Caluya Shrine in Sapang Dalaga with a panoramic view of nature.

In our case, it was already dark when we arrived at the jump-off area to Caluya Shrine. Armed with our flashlight and a little perseverance, we hiked the 197 steps to reach the Caluya Shrine.

Caluya Shrine

Thanks for the photo Azrael .

It was still a unique experience to be there on top at night. We lit some candles and relished the serenity that the place brings.

16. Caputol Heights

It was our last day in Misamis Occidental. We expect everything to be just be okay – having breakfast, lunch, then go straight to the airport.

But everything changed when we arrived at Caputol Heights in the town of Aloran. Mayor Junie Roa was there with his staff ready to welcome us into the resort and event area. Buffet breakfast was served complete with the town’s best dishes and delicacies.

Best of all, there’s a live band playing some OG songs for us to enjoy. The band was exceptional, ridiculously good musicians. We couldn’t help but dance and move to the groove of their music.

There are some cabins being constructed on the property. Some amenities are still being completed too. Capitol Heights is an exceptional place for events and celebrations.

After our breakfast, the local Tourism staff toured us around the town center visiting the St. Mathews Catholic Church and also the ruins located at the back of the structure.

17. Panguil Bay Bridge

The new longest bridge in the Philippines will soon rise in Misamis Occidental. The Panguil Bay Bridge will connect Tangub City and Tubod in Lanao Del Norte. With a length of 3.7 km., this will be the country’s longest bridge dethroning San Juanico Bridge in Leyte and Samar.

This project is expected to cut the travel time from the two destinations from more than 2 hours to just a few minutes.

Panguil Bay bridge

We had the chance to witness the construction of the bridge when we passed through Pangil Bay. We also passed through the construction area. Though we weren’t allowed to go out of the coaster for safety reasons, it’s clear that people there are working double-time to complete the bridge by 2023.

18. Punta Meriam Resort

It was time for lunch. Of course, I was excited because I was a little tired from covering the Streetdance presentation in Ozamiz that morning. I thought it was just a usual lunch and of course delectable dishes. But we experienced more.

Punta Meriam Resort in the town of Panaon has a distinctly relaxing vibe. As we enter the restaurant, we were also greeted with warmth by the resort’s owners. Looking around, I realized that this resort is the perfect place for solitude. The lush trees and chirping birds are perfect for that relaxed and tranquil moment that city dwellers crave. Oh man, the food was also superb. Delicious!

After our lunch, we then have ample time to explore the resort. They have a picturesque swimming pool with easy access to the beach. The rooms are also aesthetically designed. I just admire the love and effort that owners have put into this haven.

When you visit MisOcc and just want to chill and commune with nature, Punta Meriam is the place to be.

19. Immaculate Conception Cathedral

We had a chance to visit the Immaculate Conception Cathedral of Ozamiz after covering the Streetdance presentation in the morning.

The facade has a contemporary design. It was conceptualized by Filipino architect Leandro Locsin in 1960. The current design has actually gone through some renovations in the 90s.

Immaculate Conception Cathedral

The facade looks very modern but I learned that the church actually has a rich history. The church was established by the Recoletos in 1789 and later became known as Immaculate Conception Parish. With its contemporary look now, it’s clear that the church has gone through a lot of changes. Currently, Immaculate Conception Cathedral is the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Ozamiz.

20. Baliangao Protected Landscape and Seascape

Baliangao Protected Landscape and Seascape

Photo Credit: Baliangao Protected Landscape and Seascape

The Baliangao Protected Landscape and Seascape will make us all realize the value of environmental conservation. It’s a wetland conservation area along the coast of Danao Bay in the municipality of Baliangao. It covers four barangays (Misom, Sinian, Tugas, and Landing) with a total area of 294 hectares of mangrove and coral reef ecosystems. It’s a protected area through Proclamation No. 418.20.

There are pathways constructed in the area for visitors to enjoy the beauty of nature.

Misamis Occidental Celebrates the first Perangat Festival

Our Laag-Laag sa MisOCc is actually part of the celebration of the Perangat Festival 2022 and the 93rd Provincial Anniversary of the province.

But the main highlights of the event happened on November 12 with a Festival Street Dancing and Float Parade in the morning. Followed by the Dance Showdown and Ritual presentation in the afternoon. Then ending with a blast with the Perangat Concert with Asenso Songbirds and The Soul Supreme, KZ Tandingan.

Perangat is a Subanen word which means progress, which is suitable with the province’s tagline and branding #AsensoMisamisOccidental.

Perangat Festival

We started the day by attending the Street dancing and Float Parade in Ozamiz. The same event also took place in the municipality of Calamba so our team was divided into two groups.

I truly enjoyed the colors and arts presented by different municipalities in the Street dancing and Float Parade. It feels good to know that the province is taking pride of the Subanen culture through performance and arts.

The main event happened in the afternoon as different teams from many municipalities and cities battled it out for the Subanen Dance Ritual Showdown. It was a privilege to be witnessing this grand showcase of talent and heritage. Here’s the list of the winners.

CITY CATEGORY Champion: Oroquieta City Best in Costume: Oroquieta City Best in Musicality: Oroquieta City Best in Props: Oroquieta City Best in Choreography: Oroquieta City

MUNICIPAL CATEGORY: Champion: Jimenez First Runner-Up: Don Victoriano Second Runner-up: Lopez Jaena Third Runner-Up: Sinacaban Best in Props: Jimenez Best in Costume: Jimenez Best in Choreography: Jimenez Best in Musicality: Don Victoriano

That’s it. These are the attractions that we visited in Misamis Occidental. In case I miss some other tourist spots, feel free to share it in the comment section. Who knows, I might go back to Misamis Occidental and explore more of the beauty and heritage of the province.

Note: Laag-Laag sa MisOcc2022 is a program by the Provincial Tourism Office of Misamis Occidental in cooperation with all the LGUs, DOT Region 10 , and TPB . Thank you so much for this opportunity. Travel Guide: 10 Places to Visit in Misamis Occidental

aloran misamis occidental tourist spots

Misamis Occidental is a province located in the region of Northern Mindanao in the Philippines. It is shaped like a collapsible fan or a loaf of American bread or the letter D in the alphabet.

Its delectable suman and mouth watering lechon , pleasant climate, rich culture and history, stunning beaches and magical falls, unique architecture, and warm people are the best reasons why one should include Misamis Occidental in their travel bucket list.

I was privileged to have visited this precious gem in Northern Mindanao and on this blog, I'll be giving you a list of the places and activities that you should not miss.

1. The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception

aloran misamis occidental tourist spots

Located in the heart of Ozamiz City, the Cathedral is a popular destination for religious pilgrims. This Cathedral is the seat of the Catholic faith in Ozamiz.

The arched columns and beams give it a modern vibe but still exudes calmness and peace. Huge statues of St. Augustine and St. Ignatius welcome its parishioners and pilgrims at the entrance.

Located at the choir loft is a pipe organ installed in the 1960's , said to be the only pipe organ present in the entire Mindanao. It is also the 2nd largest in the Philippines.

aloran misamis occidental tourist spots

While the architecture does not feature coral stones like that of Jiminez', the interiors are ornate and detailed- a testament of the Misamisnon's uplifting and inspiring faith.

2. Cotta Fort

aloran misamis occidental tourist spots

Originally built in 1756 to serve as Spanish outpost, Cotta Fort was renovated and restored to its original design in 2002. It was originally built using large stones believed to have come from Panguil Bay and Siquijor.

Known as the " El Fuerte de la Concepcion y Del Triunfo " in Spanish, Cotta Fort once served as the shelter for the ships of the Spanish fleet during that time.

aloran misamis occidental tourist spots

The place reminded me of Fort Santiago. During my visit at MisOcc, this is where we had a hosted dinner. It was raining that night and the outdoor setup would have been lovely but we don't want to get drenched and dined inside the small hall instead.

3. Hoyohoy Highland Stone Chapel Adventure Park

aloran misamis occidental tourist spots

Located in Tangub City, Hoyohoy Highland Stone Chapel Adventure Park is situated on top of a hill offering its visitors a stunning panoramic view of the surrounding countryside.

The main attraction of the place is the stone chapel, which is made entirely of local materials and features beautiful stained glass windows.

aloran misamis occidental tourist spots

The place used to offer recreational activities like zip-lining, rope courses and wall climbing. These were halted, though, during our time of visit but we were told it will soon resume to its normal operations.

It gave us Baguio vibes here. It was foggy when we arrived here and it wasn't even too late of an afternoon that time. It was romantic and serene and kind of made me want to sip coffee and just enjoy being with nature. With the combination of its breathtaking views and natural beauty , this place should not be missed.

4. Piduan Curtain Falls

aloran misamis occidental tourist spots

Located in Don Victoriano Chiongbian, this 60 meter curtain falls is a stunner. In order to reach this place, we trekked around 20-30 minutes. Depending on your pace, you can get there earlier. The long walk sure tired my feet and legs but the trek itself was a great opportunity to appreciate the natural beauty of the area, with towering trees and diverse flora and fauna.

aloran misamis occidental tourist spots

We ate our lunch here and the view of its cascading waters was as sumptuous. Some of my friends took the opportunity to immerse their bodies in the cool and clear waters. I was tempted to bathe too but due to limited time, I was content taking pictures with the falls in the background.

Piduan Falls is also known for its cultural significance. The area is considered sacred by the local Subanen Tribe.

5. Belvedere Tangub

aloran misamis occidental tourist spots

Belvedere, an Italian word for "Fair View", is situated on top of a hill and offers visitors a breathtaking panoramic view of the surrounding country side, including the neighboring Mt. Malindang and Panguil Bay.

The main attraction of Belvedere is the observation deck which offers 360-degree view of the area. It is a component to the soon to be fully developed Gardens of the World project.

6. San Juan Bautista Parish, Jimenez

aloran misamis occidental tourist spots

This Baroque, late 19th century church in Jimenez is a National Cultural Treasure.

The interiors are very well preserved and features a painting done in 1898 and portions made of tanique pampango, a local version of a dry wall using panels of interwoven slats or branches covered with lime.

A magnificent steel pipe organ can also be found at the choir loft. It is said to have been installed in 1891.

7. Jimenez Heritage Town

aloran misamis occidental tourist spots

After our visit to the historical church of San Juan Bautista in Jimenez, we also had a walking tour in this heritage town. Jimenez is known for its heritage houses, which are a testament to the town's rich history and culture. These houses are a blend of different architectural styles, including Spanish and American.

Being in this quaint town was like a walk back in time. We had a glimpse of the Bacarro house. The architecture features large windows, balcony and intricate wood work. It is known as the old Bacarro Printing Press where bills during the Japanese occupation were printed.

aloran misamis occidental tourist spots

I was in awe with a great number of well-preserved houses in Jimenez. My jaw dropped in intricate wood carvings and beautiful capiz windows. I felt like I was transported to a time when our old folks don native baro't saya and kamisa de chino and carabao and horse carriages. And yeah, I wish we had a longer time to walk to its streets.

This is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in history, architecture and culture.

8. Bawbawon Island

aloran misamis occidental tourist spots

This hidden gem is located in Plaridel. This tropical paradise is perfect for guests who are looking for unspoiled beaches with crystal-clear waters. The place is relatively undeveloped which makes it an ideal spot if you're wanting to escape the hustle and bustle of city life and just want to enjoy the tranquility of the nature.

To go here, we hopped on a boat from Plaridel. The ride took us at least 30 minutes passing thru a lush flora of mangroves.

Bawbawon means shallow in local dialect. One word of caution, guests have to be back before the sea go on a low tide. We got stuck in the middle because a part of waters were already shallow for a boat to navigate.

aloran misamis occidental tourist spots

Located in the municipality of Sapang Dalaga, this 60 feet tall falls is surrounded by lush greenery and is one of the more popular destinations to locals and tourists alike. Unlike the long trek to Piduan falls, this one's relatively easier with just 10 minute walk. Yes, no need to trek.

Visitors can enjoy swimming in the cool, refreshing waters or simply relax and enjoy the scenery. There are also available  picnic huts and tables available.

There's a very interesting story about the lady in the falls. You'll have to visit here to know more about it.

10. Suman House of Clarin

aloran misamis occidental tourist spots

One's visit to Misamis Occidental will not be complete without experiencing the famous suman of Clarin.

The Suman House is a local establishment that specializes in making suman, a Filipino delicacy made from glutinous rice, coconut milk and sugar, wrapped in banana leaves.

Aside from freshly made suman, you can also eat and buy other local delicacies like bibingka and other rice cakes.

During the time that we were here, we also had the chance to see how a suman was made. My favorite is the suman moron- one with chocolate filling.

HOW TO GO TO MISAMIS OCCIDENTAL

By Air, a flight from Manila to Ozamiz Airport usually takes an hour and 40 minutes. Alternatively, you can also take a flight to Laguindingan Airport in Cagayan de Oro then take a van or bus to Ozamiz City.

By Land, it is accessible by bus from Cagayan de Oro, Iligan, Zamboanga, Pagadian and Dipolog.

By Ferry, 2Go serves Manila, Iligan, Tagbilaran and Cebu routes to Port of Ozamiz City. Ferries from Cebu, Siquijor and Bohol are available weekly en route to Port of Plaridel.

LAAG-LAAG SA MISAMIS OCCIDENTAL

aloran misamis occidental tourist spots

My trip to Misamis Occidental was one of the best I've had. The LGU gave us the warmest welcome. The biggest show of love is the long line of students, all smiles and waving orange flags, to show their warmest welcome as we enter Tangub. I mean, I've been to several Tourism invites but this one's for the book. I really felt the love. It made us feel like celebrities!

Every meal felt like FIESTA! We had lechon all the time! In every hosted meals, we went from one municipality/city to another. Some even had dances and bands to welcome us. We had our tummies and hearts full.

This is my first trip to Mindanao and I can truly say it is very safe to go on a trip to Misamis Occidental.

Whether you're a nature lover or an adventure seeker or wanting to discover a new oasis, Misamis Occidental is a great place to escape the city.

Highland Adventures in Misamis Occidental featuring Aloran, Tudela and Tangub City

Who does not love alpine-like sceneries: surrounded by towering mountainscapes while trodding the hilly terrains of undulating topography embraced by the cool breeze. It is what, we, lowland dwellers would drool upon in every excursion and travel we could in the future. This very scenery will instantly dissipate the stress in our bodies. It is the total alleviating effect for exhausted urban dwellers bombarded by the towering concrete jungles mangled by the horrendous traffic at its root base. The province of Misamis Occidental harbouring naturally the majestic and captivating vast mountain range of Malindang – a known inactive volcano forming two vast calderas and a solid foothill base spread across the province, this is a great starting base for your highland activities. Here are the towns and suggested destinations you can experience for a highland activity:

CAPUTOL HEIGHTS OF ALORAN

aloran misamis occidental tourist spots

Paving its grand entrance in Misamis Occidental’s tourism landscape, the town of Aloran, a rather rustic yet enchanting destination of the province, would offer you its auspicious and captivating destinations in their pristine state. With the continuing development of artery connections, soon, more and more spots would be favourable to its valued guests and visitors.

With the town sharing the foothills and hinterlands of the Malindang Mountain Range, one can enjoy a splendid view of the rolling hills, virtually virgin rainforest, wildlife watching, or best to enjoy the relaxing mountain scenery at the Caputol Heights Resort. Located on a ridge part, the developed part featuring an open-air hall and bespoke spots for lounging is a must-visit while in Aloran. With sprawling green spaces and upcoming A-Frame huts for your accommodation facing the green valley below, this is the best spot to rest the tired urban souls or awaken the creative sense of yourself and continue to produce ingenious and prolific works of art, literature or music. As the serene surroundings coupled with a melodic cacophony of wildlife squawks and coos, the faint distant symphonic rustling of thick tree canopies rhythmically swaying with the alternating dancing cool mountain breeze is the best therapy as your overworked body rest against the natural green turf illuminated by the cloudy blue skies above commanded by the towering Malindang ranges.

The Caputol Heights Park features spacious parking spaces, an open-air function hall with a staging area, an alfresco area, lounge seats, clean restrooms, wide turf spaces, paved pathways and many spots of interest for photos. It is about a 10-15 minute drive on a mild incline from the main road. However, cellular signals are weak to none in this area, so best if you love digital detoxification. The park is also your function hall of choice while in the vicinity of Aloran with working water and electric utility connections.

During our visit to Caputol Heights, we are warmly welcomed by their very own municipal chief executive, Mayor Insek Roa. With an amazing table setup and their very own staff serenading us with their rave 80’s music lineup, it is one of the best breakfast experiences while in Misamis Occidental. A scrumptious buffet spread with fresh beverages is what we devoured. Mayor Insek himself even participated with the band as the drummer which kickstarted everyone’s attention and pulled us to centerstage and danced the calories away.

Apart from the Caputol Heights, the town of Aloran boasts its miraculous church, plus three of the amazing waterfalls that yet I need to see and explore.

HOYOHOY HIGHLAND AND BELVEDERE VIEW DECK, TANGUB CITY

aloran misamis occidental tourist spots

Sharing the slopes of the Malindang mountain range, Tangub City is naturally blessed to enjoy panoramic views of the province’s shore and the ultraslim Panguil Bay. With such a strategic incline, the City holds two of its amazing destination. The Hoyohoy Highlands and the Belvedere View Deck – two view deck parks equally captivating yet unique that poise a different story and ambience.

The Hoyohoy Highland Park positions itself as a natural park lined with stony pathways and a stone chapel where you can express your prayer intentions. There are more activities you can do at Hoyohoy which involve a lot of tackling its undulating stairways and footpaths leading to its different sections. Want to train your cardio endurance? Hoyohoy could be a good spot for you.

Belvedere Scenic View Deck is part of a tourism megaproject they call Garden of the World and is a work in progress. The natural hilly topography and great cool mountain climate would certainly render a perfect environment for such amazing and colourful blooms in the future.

On February 8, 2023, the Provincial Government of Misamis Occidental soft-launched the larger portions of the Gardens of the World featuring truly bespoke view decks and spawning still turf and its botanical details. To give you a bit of perspective, the ongoing development involves the higher elevations of the property, thus, providing its guests with the unparalleled experience of being in a sprawling garden scape and the breathtaking panoramic view below.

SUBANEN ECOTOURISM PARK, TUDELA

aloran misamis occidental tourist spots

To keep the Subanen culture alive and kicking, the Municipality of Tudela supported by the Second District Representative of the province conceptualized this livelihood project. With all the materials sourced locally in building the site, the project made sure that they have respected and followed the Subanen culture and architecture making the tour as much as legitimate as they can. The Eco Park is located on a hilly terrain providing picturesque formation of the house structure with mother nature as their grand backdrop. Being there seemingly catapults as back in time when the indigenous lived as they were before the effects of commercialization and urbanization took place within the majority of the tribe.

Arriving at its gates during the blue hour, the warm lights exude a unique glow against the picturesque seemingly stacked huts as we witness a traditional Subanen dance of courtship performed by locals. After marvelling at the ritual performance, we sauntered around the park and tried to check the houses despite the dimming luminance surrounding us, as we devour the Niligkid delicacy and Pineapple Pie – yum! I wish I could experience and spend a night there.

With its apparent modest and simple design, the use of space is well thought off. The rooms are indeed spacious leading to a wide balcony. The common rooms enjoy a quite high ceiling plan where fresh cool air freely circulates. Huge windows and doors allow maximum ventilation, thus, one’s stay would not require air conditioning since of its natural high-altitude topology.

The Park is not yet in its full-swing operation as the LGU still manages its final touches, as of writing. I am excited for its official launch for the visitors to marvel at what can Tudela and the Subanens can offer.

Misamis Occidental is one of the budding tourist spots of the country, with a combination of virgin nature and cultural heritage sites. While there’s a high chance it’s not on your bucket list right now, these tourist spots in Misamis Occidental would change your mind into visiting the province!

Top Tourist Spots in Misamis Occidental

Must-Visit Tourist Spots in Misamis Occidental, Philippines

Parish church of st. john the baptist.

Located in the town of Jimenez, this heritage church’s structure hails from the 19th century, and its European architecture is built from the traditional sand-and-coral-stone process of the time. It is among the most well-preserved churches in the country, with its ornate interior and painted ceilings being hailed as one of the nation’s National Cultural Treasures!

Piduan Curtain Falls

This wonderful series of falls is located in Piduan Valley, Don Victoriano Chiongbian. Part of the Malindang Mountain Range, the Curtain Falls is accessible after a two-hour ascent. Its stunning beauty lies in its expanse, with water streaming from a wide breadth of streams embedded in the rocks of the mountainside. The crystal-clear falls looks like a curtain of shining gossamer amidst the raw greens of the forest!

Aquamarine Park

Straddled by the municipalities of Sinacaban and Tudela, the Misamis Occidental Aquamarine Park houses a wide variety of native animals. Its major attractions include the Dolphin Island, a man-made island that has just recently been renovated. There is also a fish-hatching station and a mangrove forest. Aside from marine mammals and various aquatic creatures, the park also has a wildlife center! Those wishing to visit this expansive tourist spot in Misamis Occidental can also lodge at the hut-style cottages along the mangrove forest.

Sapang Dalaga Falls

Also called the Baga Falls, this is an easily accessible tourist spot that is only about two kilometers away from the town proper of Sitio Celso Velez. Instead of raw nature, the falls is surrounded by a park (with a statue of the titular maiden). The park is complete with picnic tables and a function hall, making it great for family outings.

Baliangao Sunrise Beach

If you’re looking for a good white-sand beach, Sunrise Paradise Resort in Baliangao has just what you need. The beach has all the amenities you would expect, but only a handful of people are here at a time so you can enjoy the serenity of nature. There are rustic swings, a volleyball court, and affordable cottages, but the area is dominated by a very rural feel that might just be what you need to disconnect and unwind from the grind.

Hoyohoy Highland Mountain Park

Located in Tangub City , this park is famous for operating two of the longest zip lines in the county. It also offers magnificent views of Panguil Bay, along with the surrounding towns. The park also has gardens where scientific studies are conducted on plants. It’s a one-of-a-kind botanical garden. Located in Barangay Hoyohoy at the foot of Mt. Malindang, this is one of the top tourist spots in Misamis Occidental.

Hoyohoy Highland Mountain Park

Since Misamis Occidental is just a short drive from the other gems of Mindanao, it’s worth your time to pay it a visit. You’re sure to have a grand time!

How to get to Misamis Occidental

The gateway to Misamis Occidental is Ozamis. You can fly from Manila to Ozamis Airport and you can easily get around the province. Buses are also available from nearby provincesand as far sa Cagayan de Oro City and Zamboanga City.

Dude, you’re so incoherent. I like it how you explain something and the next sentence that comes next to it goes in contrast of what you just said… its so pathetic I love it. Hahaha

First of all, you said Jimenez Church is located “in Ozamis City”. Did it not come to you that its called “Jimenez Church” and not Ozamis Church is because of the fact that its located in the town of Jimenez, a few kilometers north of Ozamis City? Lol.

Then when it comes to Piduan Curtain Falls you said it is easily accessible, then you placed “after a two-hour ascent”. Lol, tell me how a “two-hour ascent” is easy?

Also, I lost it when you said something about Baliangao Sunrise Beach, “The virgin beach has all the amenities you would expect”. Well, I thought the basic essence of a “virgin” beach is its rawness, meaning, absent of any sort of amenities, its like on its most “natural” form, absent of any amenities, hence the term “virgin”.

Useful Information

Here’s a simple Map of Misamis Occidental …

aloran misamis occidental tourist spots

Rainiest in August-November and driest in February-April.

Brief History

The province was previously called Misamis. It was originally peopled by indigenous people called Lumads, in which the Subanon tribe was dominant. Circa 1700s, Misamis was threatened by marauding pirates from nearby Lanao.

The pirates used to abduct 500 Filipinos a year to sell as slaves to the Dutch’s United East India Company in Java, or to the Portuguese in Jakarta. Northern Mindanao was hardest hit, particularly Misamis.

To evade the pirates, many Subanons migrated to Misamis Oriental and Zamboanga del Norte, particularly Dapitan.

In 1756, Father Ducos built the Fort Santiago Ozamis to defend against the pirates. He named it ‘El Fuerte De Nuestra Señora Del La Concecion Del Triunfo’ (Our Lady of Triumph) in honor of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception. He also created a naval armada he himself commanded.

In 1929, Misamis Occidental was founded following the division of Misamis into two… the other half is Misamis Oriental.

In World War II, the province was briefly occupied by the Japanese invaders. It was liberated in 1945.

Finally, peace embraced the province.

Its capital is Oroquieta City which also seats the Provincial Capitol .

Subdivisions

The province has 3 cities… Ozamiz, Oroquieta, and Tangub.

It has 14 towns… Aloran, Baliangao, Bonifacio, Calamba, Clarin, Concepcion, Don Victoriano, Jimenez, Lopez Jaena, Panaon, Plaridel, Sapang Dalaga, Sinacaban, and Tudela.

Transportation

The province is a 1.5-hour flight from the Manila Airport. The Ozamiz City Airport is in Gango.

Get around the province by bus, mini-bus, van, jeepney, tricycle, motorcab or pedicab.

The dominant tongue in the province is Cebuano. The people also speak Tagalog and English. A native dialect called Subanon is spoken by the Subanon Tribe.

Misamis Occidental: A Place Where Nature is Greener

aloran misamis occidental tourist spots

Mount Malindang

Misamis Occidental is a province of the Philippines located in the Northern Mindanao region. Its capital is Oroquieta City. The province borders Zamboanga del Norte and Zamboanga del Sur to the west and is separated from Lanao del Norte by Panguil Bay to the south and from Misamis Oriental by Iligan Bay to the east. The province of Misamis was originally inhabited by Subanons who were easy targets of sea pirates from Lanao. Misamis is taken from the early settlement of the Spaniards at the entrance to the Panguil Bay.

The name "Misamis" is believed to have been derived from the Subano word "kuyamis," which is a variety of sweet coconut - the staple food of the early settlers in this place. During the years, the name persisted as an inference of the geographical location and upon the advent of the Spanish settlers.  The word "kuyamis" easily gave way to the more convenient pronounceable but corrupted word "Misamis."

Misamis Occidental comprised the original nine towns of Baliangao, Lopez Jaena, Tudela, Clarin, Plaridel, Oroquieta, Aloran, Jimenez, and Misamis. The original nine municipalities of the province of Misamis Occidental grew into the present three cities of Ozamiz, Oroquieta, and Tangub and the 14 municipalities of Aloran, Baliangao, Bonifacio, Calamba, Clarin, Concepcion, Don Victoriano, Jimenez, Lopez Jaena, Panaon, Plaridel, Sapang Dalaga, Sinacaban, and Tudela.

Brief History

In 1942, the Japanese Imperial forces landed in Misamis Occidental, beginning their brief occupation of the province as part of World War II. In 1945, combined American and Philippine Commonwealth forces liberated the province, and with the help of recognized guerrilla units defeated the Japanese forces.

Misamis Occidental is located near the narrow strip of land linking Northwestern Mindanao, to the Northcentral part of the island. Shaped like a collapsible fan it is bounded on the northeast by the Mindanao Sea, east by the Iligan Bay, Southeast by the Panguil Bay, and the west by the Zamboanga del Norte and Sur. The fact that three of its boundaries are bodies of water gives away water life as one of its natural resources and fishing as one of its main industries. Except along the coastal area, hilly and rolling land characterized the provincial terrain. Towards the western border, the terrain is particularly rugged.
