The French Quarter

Nothing epitomizes the charm of New Orleans quite like a visit to the French Quarter. Created by a French engineer at the start of the 18th century and handed over to the Spanish at the end of the Seven Years’ War, this historic neighborhood is teeming with Spanish and French colonial architecture. It’s easy to lose yourself wandering amongst the many art galleries, coffee shops, bars, and restaurants that line the streets. By far the most famous street in the French Quarter is Bourbon Street, the epicenter of New Orleans’s annual Mardi Gras celebration, and the starting point for many visitors’ visits.

While one of the most fun ways to explore this fabled area is by simply wandering up and down the streets immersing yourself in the vibrant atmosphere. However, to really appreciate the incredible history and rich her of the neighborhood, it’s a great idea to take a guided walking tour where you can learn more about the many stories attached to some of the buildings.

1. The French Quarter Tour

Along the way, you can get breathtaking views of the Mississippi River, learn about the creation and significance of Jackson Square, view a wide range of architectural styles, and see where jazz was born!

Tours last approximately two hours and start at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m from 941 Decatur Street near the French Market and Cafe du Monde. There is a discount for children under 12 so make sure to ask about that before booking. In addition to the French Quarter tours also offers tours to the City’s cemeteries and the Garden District, 

2. Free Walking Tours by the NOLA Tour Guy

Led by a local historian known as the NOLA Tour Guy , these tip-based walking tours give visitors an enthralling look at the French Quarter and the Bayou St. John. During the tour, you’ll see Pirates Alley, Jackson Square, Royal Street, the homes of Tennessee Williams and William Faulkner, and, of course, the legendary Bourbon Street. The tour begins at 768 Decatur. While it’s possible to just show up at the tour starting point, it’s a good idea to book your tour in advance via their website so they know that you’re coming. If you’re traveling with a group of six or more people, you’ll have to make a separate booking for a private tour.

3. French Quarter Jogging Tour

Run by Tours by Steven, the French Quarter Jogging Tour is the perfect option for visitors who want to get a few sneaky workouts in (not a bad idea considering that New Orleans has so many amazing foods to try!). The tour covers a six-mile route and lasts up to three hours. Along the way, you’ll hear historical facts, ghost stories, and Hollywood gossip while jogging along the Mississippi River, through Jackson Square, past the St. Louis Cathedral, and along the dazzling streets of the French Quarter itself. 

If you like to run, this is an amazing chance to cover a lot of territory within a short time and it’s a wonderful introduction to many of the most beloved areas of the city. Everyone 12 and older is welcome to join.

This is a great way to gain an understanding of how the slave trade and the wealthy merchants impacted the city.

The tour will also pay a quick visit to the gates of the historic Lafayette Cemetery where you can learn more about the local burial traditions before finishing off with the Buckner Mansion, one of the filming locations of American Horror Story. The tour begins at 2140 Magazine Street and lasts roughly two hours. 

6. Garden District and Lafayette Cemetery Walking Tour

Thanks to New Orleans’ long history, there are countless ghost stories and legends attached to it. This haunted history is creepy enough to send chills down anyone’s spine and to top it off, the French Quarter is rumored to be one of the most haunted square miles in the entire country. During haunted tours, you can see some of the quarter’s haunted buildings, and the homes of some of New Orleans’s most illustrious characters including Marie Laveau and Madame LaLaurie, a New Orleans socialite/serial killer who used her mansion on Royal Street as a place to torture and murder slaves. 

Meanwhile, cemetery tours give you a closer look into New Orleans’s most famous (infamous) cemeteries. The two most visited cemeteries include the St. Louis Cemetery in the French Quarter and the LaFayette Cemetery in the Garden District. While many of the Garden District and French Quarter tours stop outside of the cemetery gates, you need to join a cemetery tour if you want to see what lies inside. During cemetery tours, you can walk between some of the city’s most historic tombs and learn more about the people who helped shape the city into what it is today. 8. St. Louis Cemetery Tour

If you’re a fan of the macabre, you’ll certainly want to stop by the St. Louis Cemetery. This tour run by Save Our Cemeteries aims to reserve this fascinating cemetery and proceeds from the tours go to restoration efforts. During the tour, guides will take visitors through the cemetery highlighting the tombs of important historical figures, as well as the final resting places of some of New Orleans’s earliest European residents. The guides are extremely knowledgeable and it’s a great way to learn the intriguing history of the cemetery. 

Tours last around 90 minutes and depart throughout the day and there is a special discount for kids six and under. If the St. Louis Cemetery is closed when you visit New Orleans, don’t worry! 9. Cemetery Voodoo Tour

If you’re interested in something a bit less spooky and a bit more historical, Historic New Orleans Tours runs a Cemetery Voodoo Tour. This interesting daytime tour focuses on the above-ground burial practices associated with the graves and stops at some of the most famous graves including that of the Voodoo Queen herself Marie Laveau. Here, your expert guide will tell you about how ancient West African religious beliefs crossed with Roman Catholicism to create voodoo and how this new religion had an impact on daily life in New Orleans. 

While in the cemetery, you can also view the graves of New Orleans’s first African American mayor, and civil rights pioneer Homer Plessy, along with the family tomb of painter Edgar Degas. Tours depart in the afternoon which gives you a lovely chance to get some great photos of this beautifully haunting place.

10. Nightly Cemetery Bus Tour

As the burial site of so many people, it’s unsurprising that New Orleans cemeteries are full of ghost stories. During a nighttime cemetery and ghost tour run by NOLA Ghost Riders , you’ll visit multiple cemeteries while learning more about the people buried there and the history behind the cemetery as well. If you’re lucky (unlucky?), you may even be able to meet one of the resident ghosts in person! If you prefer a different kind of spirit, riders 21 and over are also welcome to bring their own alcohol along for the ride. 

NOLA Ghost Riders also offer cemetery walking tours and ghost walking tours if you prefer to go at a slightly slower pace or focus a bit more deeply on just one cemetery or neighborhood.

11. French Quarter Ghosts and Legends Tour

Again, while it’s possible to Google some of the most famous stories and then wander around on your own trying to find the locations, it’s much more interesting to simply join one of the many guided ghost tours available. One of our favorite of these is Haunted History Tours , which offers a spellbinding French Quarter Ghosts and Legends Tour, a two-hour historical tour where you can hear about local ghost sightings and tales of local hauntings from a local guide as well as a Cemetery Tour that visits a collection of historical cemeteries located along Canal Street. 

12. French Quarter Phantoms Ghost Tour

If you’re something a little spookier, you should check out the French Quarter Phantoms Ghost Tours which takes you through some of the mysteries and legends surrounding the quarter. They offer an incredibly long list of ghost tours ranging from a Voodoo Tour to a Saints and Sinners Tour where you can discover the sordid tales of New Orleans sinners and its saints.

19. New Orleans Haunted Pub Crawl

Since you’re allowed to have open containers, you can even grab a “road soda” from one of the many bars along Bourbon Street and bring it along with you. 21. National Park Service Self-Guided Tour

One of the must-visit locations within the bayou is the Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve . Strangely named after a French-American pirate who smuggled goods through the swamp from New Orleans in the early 19th century, these wetlands include the 9,000-hectare Barataria Preserve. Here, you can wooden boardwalks perched above the wetlands where you can meander by bald cypress trees, live oaks, and perhaps an alligator or two.

Another interesting stop is the Wetlands Acadian Cultural Center located in the town of Lafayette. These descendants of French-Canadian refugees who moved here in the late 18th century settled into the bayous where they made a living hunting and fishing. The National Park Service offers a wide array of self-guided and virtual tours of this stunning area.

22. Best of New Orleans Swamp Tour

Run by Bayou Swamp Tours , the Best of New Orleans Swamp Tour gives visitors an incredible introductory look into life in the bayou as you glide through the swamps on an airboat. Since the airboat hovers just above the water, it makes it easy for them to penetrate deep into the swamp and zip in between the trees as you explore this fascinating ecosystem. If you’re lucky, you may even be able to spot some alligators lounging in the sun or lurking just below the waterline, as well as local birds soaring through the air.

They offer pick-up service from the French Quarter and have a wide array of boats to choose from ranging from small airboats holding just six to 10 people to large pontoon boats. Tours are just under two hours long and run throughout the day.

23. Daily Swamp Tours 

Another solid, long-standing operator for bayou tours is Cajun Encounters which offers daily swamp tours as well as VIP tours. Their standard two-hour tours have a capacity of 22 people on a flat bottomed boat while the VI tours accommodate just 8-10 people. You can either meet them at the boat launch or they are happy to arrange a pick-up in New Orleans. 

They also offer city tours and plantation tours so this is basically a one-stop shop for all of your New Orleans tour needs and you may even be able to score some discounts if you book multiple tours with them. 

24. Kayak Swamp Tours

If you want a really unique way to explore the bayou rather than the common airboat tours, you may want to look into Plantation and Kayak Swamp Tours . Specializing in eco-friendly activities, this tour operator offers daily guided swamp tours that allow you to experience the bayou in a whole new way. It’s also possible to do a combination plantation and kayaking tour.

Plantations

Just outside of New Orleans, you can find an impressive array of plantations that were once the economic powerhouses of the American south. These Antebellum-era homes and elaborate gardens were the image of prosperity and excess, but it’s important to also learn about the enslaved workers who maintained the properties during a dark time in American history.

Some of the most accessible and interesting plantation homes in the area include the Whitney Plantation, the Oak Valley Plantation, and the Laura Plantation, The Oak Valley, and the Laura Plantations are located near one another and you can visit both on one day trip. Otherwise, you can choose from one of the many guided plantation tours on offer which generally include a few stops at other interesting spots along the way.

25. Guided tour of the Oak Valley Plantation

The Oak Valley Plantation is perhaps the most famous of New Orleans’ plantation homes due to the double row of 28 oak trees that form an elaborate, ¼ mile-long archway over the driveway up the house. Thanks to its picture-perfect location and architecture, it has been featured in a handful of Hollywood shows and movies, most notably Interview with a Vampire and as you make your way up to the main house, you may momentarily feel like you’re in Gone with the Wind.

Originally called the Bon Sejour Plantation , Oak Valley was built in 1839 on the bank of the Mississippi River to produce sugar cane. It’s built in a Greek revival style with elaborate architecture and landscaping and is now a listed National Historic Landmark. While visitors are free to wander around the grounds, it’s a great idea to take an entertaining tour of the house complete with scandalous stories of the family that lived here. Besides the main house, you can also visit Slavery Alley to see how the enslaved people were forced to live. 

26. Oak Alley & Laura Plantation Combo Tour

Built in 1805, the Laura Plantation is also a National Historic Landmark with 12 standing buildings on the National Register. Before being renamed for Laura Locoul in the late 19th century, the plantation was originally called l’Habitation Dupark after its former owner and features a manor house built in a raised Louisiana Creole style with bright colors and a unique U-shape design. It was the family home of a Creole family and was run by four generations of women (which is pretty impressive!)

On this combo tour run by Cajun Encounters, visitors can see two very different plantations and discover more about life at both of them. Tours last around seven hours and provide excellent value for money for anyone hoping to gain a wider perspective on the Antebellum era.

27. Gray Line’s Whitney Plantation Tour

Another plantation that’s well worth a visit is the Whitney Plantation . Located just seven miles away from Oak Valley, the Whitney Plantation was restored thanks to the generosity of a New Orleans lawyer and is dedicated to telling the story of the enslaved people there. The plantation was originally called the Habitation Haydel after the German family who built it and is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. 

Operated by Gray Line sightseeing tours, the Whitney Plantation Tour includes an in-depth visit to this harrowing museum where you can view the many museum exhibits, restored buildings, memorial artwork, and the hundreds of narratives left behind by the people enslaved there. Tours last roughly seven hours including travel time from the French Quarter. If you’re having trouble deciding which plantation tour is the right one for you, It’s also possible to visit Whitney Plantation and Oak Valley as part of Gray Line’s Double Plantation Tour .
