Why Visit Alaska with Princess?

To some, visiting Alaska is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. To others, it is a place they will vow to return. So why go to Alaska and not see all the wonders of the state -- among them glaciers, quaint seaports, sealife, wildlife viewing, wilderness adventures and, of course, Mt. McKinley. The full Alaska experience is truly available only to those who travel by both land and sea -- a Princess specialty.

Years of Experience -- For more than 35 years, Princess has blazed a trail as the leader in Alaska cruise and cruisetour vacations. As one of the cruise and tour pioneers, Princess has the vast experience to offer travelers a way to enjoy the absolute best of the state's wonders with a seamless land and sea vacation.

Glacier Bay and Denali National Park -- Only Princess includes both of Alaska's favorite attractions on every Gulf of Alaska cruisetour. Ships spend a full day cruising by the spectacular glaciers of Glacier Bay, while on land guests each stay at least two nights in the Denali National Park area.

Princess Wilderness Lodges -- Only Princess has built five riverside lodges showcasing the unspoiled natural beauty of the real Alaskan wilderness. Located in some of Alaska's prime wilderness areas, the lodges -- Copper River Princess Wilderness Lodge, Denali Princess Wilderness Lodge, Fairbanks Princess Riverside Lodge, Kenai Princess Wilderness Lodge and Mt. McKinley Princess Wilderness Lodge -- offer guests the great outdoors with Princess service and style.

Princess Rail Service -- Only Princess takes guests directly from the cruise ship pier to Princess wilderness lodges in the Denali National Park area the same day. This exclusive service makes for a faster and easier trip to the wilderness, resulting in more time enjoying the natural beauty of the park. And as a result, only Princess cruisetour guests all get to spend at least two nights in the Denali area at a Princess lodge.

Affordable Balconies -- Princess ships offer affordable balconies on standard staterooms, not just suites and minisuites. With more balconies than any other cruise line the region, guests can enjoy views of glaciers and wildlife right from the comfort of their own balcony stateroom.

Dining Choices -- Onboard, guests can dine where, when and with whom they choose with a choice of Traditional Fixed-Seating or Anytime Dining. Multiple main dining rooms make it possible for each guest to enjoy dining just as they please.

Special Onboard Alaska Programs -- Cultural offerings in each port of call, unique partnerships with the U.S. Forest Service and National Park Service, and an interesting lineup of local entertainers, historians and naturalists further enhance guests' Alaska experience. Programs include a special presentation from U.S. Forest Service rangers while in Ketchikan, a talk by Iditarod winner Libby Riddles, Junior Ranger programs and informative ranger presentations while in Glacier Bay.

State-of-the-Art Ships -- Princess vessels feature the best of both worlds -- big ship choice, small ship feel. Each ship offers the feel of a floating resort without ever feeling overwhelmed by a crowd, and are filled with an incredible array of onboard activities -- from the unique Lotus Spa, to spectacular evening entertainment in multiple venues.

Princess Cruises was founded in 1965 and has more than 16 ships sailing worldwide. Ships carry anywhere from 600 to 3600 passengers per voyage. Princess Cruises was an early pioneer in cruises to Alaska and they have a well-established shore operation in Southeast Alaska to complement their onboard services.

Princess Cruises focus on the mainstream North American cruiser, ensuring that their entertainment and dining experience entices the broadest spectrum of passengers. The cruise line's Anytime Dining, Scholarship@Sea, Princess Book Club, and Movies Under the Stars are popular fleetwide programs. Alaska cruisers enjoy even more specialized experiences through the North to Alaska program, which brings local food and culture to the ship, and the Alaska Explorers Youth Program. Evening entertainment ranges from intimate comedy sets, to original live productions created by award-winning Broadway composers.

The onboard atmosphere is generally casual, particularly in Alaska, but Princess does routinely have two formal dress nights for voyages longer than seven days. Princess Cruises is considered a moderately priced cruise line. The onboard experience is well suited for middle to upper age travelers, families, couples, and new cruisers.

7 Things I Loved, Plus 4 Things I Didn’t During Princess’s Alaska Cruisetour

  • Cruises and Sailing
  • Types of Travel

On my first morning after embarking on the Royal Princess Hamilton Cruise ship on a sea and land cruise from Vancouver through the Inside Passage of Alaska and up to Fairbanks, I sat on my portside balcony and watched the gray seas as the pale morning sun rose.

A sudden movement caught my eye, and the head of a humpback whale rose directly out of the water, suspended for a brief moment before it disappeared under the sea.

“Did I just see that?” I muttered sleepily to myself. As if to answer me, the telltale poof of water shot out of the sea, followed by the dark, subtle hump of the whale as he followed alongside our massive 1,083-foot long ship .

Instantly, I ran inside to wake my travel buddy, but by the time he got to the balcony, the whale was long gone. However, that whale sighting was a premonition of extraordinary adventures to come on the Princess Cruises’ 12-17 day Connoisseur Alaska Cruisetour .

From luscious food choices and all-day entertainment to excursions and off-shore adventures through Alaska’s small coastal communities, the Alaska Cruisetour was probably one of the most fun trips I had taken all year. While I had my first cruise in January on a small excursion ship, I was invited and hosted by Princess Cruises to experience my first “big” cruise ship. For some reason, I had poo-pooed the idea of the big “floating city” cruise ships in the past, but the 12 days of sailing and traveling with Princess changed my mind.

I get it now. I get why people dream of cruises and just how easy it is to relax and just enjoy when you are being pampered, cared for, and catered to by a cruise ship company. Coming from the eyes of a brand-new cruiser (this won’t be my last cruise, I guarantee you), here are the seven things I loved — plus the four things I didn’t — during the Princess Alaska Cruisetour.

7 Things I Loved

1. medallion magnificant and the staff.

aboard Princess Cruise Line

The Royal Princess is a Princess MedallionClass™ ship with a capacity of 3,560 guests. The MedallionClass ships use touchless technologies in the form of a small, quarter-sized customizable Medallion and an app to enhance and personalize individual experiences and health protocols.

This thing is so cool. I had my Medallion customized with an astrological symbol and ordered the rubber wristband. While wearing it, the Medallion automatically unlocks and locks my stateroom door as I enter it, allows staff to find me anywhere on the ship to deliver my daily Bloody Mary, allows for touch-free boarding and purchases, let me find my travel companion on the ship, and more.

“So let’s say you’re out tanning by the pool and you want to get some extra sunscreen, you can go on the app on your phone and order sunscreen which will be purchased through the app and delivered to you where you are anywhere on the ship,” said Briana Latner, public relations and marketing for Princess Cruises. “We’ve also introduced ‘Dine My Way,’ which helps you make reservations in the main dining rooms and the specialty dining, helps get rid of wait times and helps you with your special preferences.”

Another feature of the Princess Medallion is the Ocean Compass, which allows you to locate and message your travel companions. Whomever you are traveling with is automatically named as travel companions in the app, but you can remove each other if you choose to.

“Sometimes there are kids who are teenagers. They can go off on their own, but you want to make sure you know where they are and they’re safe,” Latner said. “Many people who are traveling with parents or the elderly who may get disoriented find it’s been really helpful  to be able to find each other too.”

Touchless tech on Princess Cruises

Travel blogger Erin Cohen said the Medallion created a level of ease on her trip that shocked her.

“It makes you eat too much,” she laughed. “Everything comes to you at the snap of a finger or the touch of a button. The Medallion makes life almost too easy, but it’s great.”

Combined with the Princess Medallion, the staff on the boat is top-notch. Our stateroom was cleaned twice a day at least (the Medallion lets staff know when you are out of your room so they don’t disturb you), the bartenders all know your name and preferred drink, and every crewmember greets you with a cheerful hello.

Using the app and the Medallion was super convenient when it came to purchases, ordering, getting around, and more.

Pro Tip: Download the app before you embark on the cruise to upload safety and health documents, pre-book activities and dining, and get used to all the features. It’s a lot to learn. You can order the Medallion ahead of time and either have it sent to you prior to the cruise or you can pick it up upon embarkation.

Fun Fact: The Pacific Princess was the star ship in the 1977 television series called The Love Boat . That series also made the concept of a sea-going vacation popular with millions of people and has been widely credited with fueling the dramatic expansion of the cruise industry.

2. By Land And By Sea

Princess's own scenic rail car

The Royal Princess Alaska Cruisetours are a combo land and sea experience. In addition to a 7-day Voyage of the Glaciers Alaska cruise that includes two glacier-viewing experiences and stops in the small Alaskan communities of Juneau, Ketchikan, Skagway, and Whittier (Anchorage), you’ll also explore Alaska’s interior with a guided land exploration tour.

Once you’ve disembarked from the ship, you can spend 3 or more nights on land at the various Princess Wilderness Lodges , including the Kenai Princess Wilderness Lodge, the Mt. McKinley Princess Wilderness Lodge, the Denali Princess Wilderness Lodge, and the Fairbanks Princess Wilderness Lodge.

Princess Wilderness Lodge

These lodges are situated riverside near the legendary Denali National Park and Preserve, on the stunningly beautiful Kenai Peninsula, and in Fairbanks. Each lodge offers its own unique personality.

You will also travel by rail in a private Princess Cruises scenic railroad car and by tour bus to the various locations.

We were on the Connoisseur Alaska Cruisetour , which offers the highest level of service with a dedicated tour director, the 7-day Voyages of the Glaciers cruise, 5-10 nights on land, travel on the Princess Alaska rail service, stays at Kenai Fjords National Park and Denali National Park , a Tundra Wilderness Tour into Denali National Park (We saw three grizzly bears!), sightseeing opportunities, and most meals included.

What I loved about this option was the ability to see not only the glaciers and wonders of coastal Alaska along the Inside Passage, but a chance to explore the famed national parks of Alaska’s rugged and beautiful interior. It truly was the best of both worlds.

“You see pictures but to see it in person is just like, it’s hard to believe this is even real. The whole time I was in Alaska, I just kept saying it was like a movie set,” said Cohen.

3. All The Choices (And Unlimited Drinks)

fine dining on Princess Cruise Line

So maybe you are craving a pepperoni pizza while you lounge in one of the many hot tubs on the 16th-floor deck. Maybe one night, all you dream of is a big juicy steak with a Maine lobster tail. Maybe you want a lot of choices from the all-day buffet.

On the Royal Princess, the more than a dozen dining choices come in many different flavors, ranging from high-end steakhouse to Italian cuisine to sushi. Like many cruise ships, the Royal Princess has a buffet that features Asian, Indian, American, and Latino cuisine, as well as breakfast items, fresh fruit, a pastry bar, and more. On the fifth floor in the central Vista, a small deli is open 24/7 for the late night/early morning crowd.

The ship also has numerous bars, and because we were given the unlimited drinks option, we put those to good use. From the poolside bars to the cozy Wheelhouse Bar with its live music, you’ll not have to worry about finding the perfect cocktail or Alaska beer to sip on.

Although I dined at the fancy Crown Grill and Sabatini’s, the buffet was our go-to option most days due to the sheer variety of foods to choose from. Be warned, though: It’s easy to let your eyes be bigger than your stomach, and you can end up eating more than you planned because the food is just so tasty.

4. Lots Of Viewing Areas

Denali National Park and Preserve

The Alaska Cruisetour I was on started from Vancouver and sailed through Alaska’s Inside Passage through some of the most beautiful scenery I’d ever seen. With glaciers, waterfalls, misty mountains, and otters and whales frolicking in the waves, it would be a crime not to take it all in.

I loved all the decks and viewing areas on the Royal Princess. From our own private balcony to picture windows throughout the ship to expansive decks, the views just kept coming.

Pro Tip: Bring binoculars! I really regretted not bringing the pair I own. Trust me, you won’t regret taking them when the whales and otters make their appearance.

5. Performances And Special Programs

plenty to do and watch on Royal Princess's Cruisetour

You’ll never get bored on this Cruisetour. Starting as early as 6 a.m. every day, the Royal Princess has events, special programs, classes, naturalist talks, and fun activities. From morning stretching on the deck to art auctions and contests to game shows and line dancing classes, this ship doesn’t stop!

In addition to the hourly activities, excursions, and options during the day, The Royal Princess presents big musical shows, comedians, naturalist talks, and more in its expansive Princess Theatre. The smaller bars and venues feature live musicians and fun, silly game shows while the main Vista area of the fifth floor holds concerts and dance parties. The ship even has a disco, a hopping casino with slots and table games, a very large fitness area on the 17th deck, poolside movies, a pickleball court, a Discovery Camp for kids, and more.

Every day, a daily newsletter listing all the activities on the ship is delivered to your room, so it’s easy to find and choose what performances or classes you’d like to take part in. If you are bored at all on this ship, that’s on you! Seriously, you’ll have a hard time picking which fun activity to do.

6. Being Pampered

After days of hiking, exploring Alaska’s small communities, whale watching, dancing all night, and maybe having one too many cocktails, it’s nice to be pampered. The Royal Princess’ onboard Lotus Spa brings you to a place of peace and Zen with services like traditional massage, acupuncture, facials like the La Therapie HydraLift facial, couples massage, and Aroma Stone Therapy Massage.

After relaxing, cruisers can head to The Enclave , a getaway of thermal suites and a hydro-therapy pool with a cascading rain shower and therapeutic air jets. Sweat out your worries at a Turkish-style steam bath, steam rooms, and dry saunas for purification and detoxification, then doze off on the heated stone beds or relaxing water beds.

Another pampering experience is Royal Princess’ The Sanctuary , an adult-only retreat on the top deck with private cabanas, food and drink, and al fresco massages. The “Serenity Stewards” are quietly efficient in delivering everything you need, from fresh mimosas to towels.

7. All The Excursions

With 12 days of adventure, it would be impossible for me to list all the land and sea excursions available through the Royal Princess Cruisetour. Thankfully, you’ll be able to find all the options through the Medallion app and with the onboard concierges.

For my excursions, I went out on a crab boat in Ketchikan to learn about crab harvesting and to stuff myself silly on Dungeness crab, roared up winding mountain trails on a UTV, spotted whales, climbed glaciers, kayaked pristine mountain glacial lakes, toured and spotted wildlife on a Tundra Wilderness Tour in Denali National Park and so much more.

The excursions range from the sedate and relaxing to the wild and extreme, so there’s a little bit of everything for anyone. You can see the list of available excursions here .

4 Things I Didn’t Love

1. prices of excursions.

Alaska is expensive. There’s no getting around that fact. Being able to enjoy the Alaska landscape on a guided excursion is going to cost you. Some of the most expensive excursions include flights on small planes and helicopters, but they tend to be the most popular as well, like the Denali Flightseeing tours and helicopter tours of surrounding glaciers.

You aren’t required to purchase excursions, however. If you’d rather explore the different ports on your own, you can do that too.

White Pass Rail in Skagway

2. Not Enough Time In Each Port Or Land Lodge

When you are cruising, you have a schedule to keep. You might fall in love with tiny little Skagway, but you only have a day in port. You may want to spend more time at the Kenai Princess Wilderness Lodge with its cozy rooms and fireplaces, but you only have one night.

The fact that you do not have control over how long you can stay in any one place is certainly not Princess’ fault, but it is a bummer and a fact of life when cruising.

3. No Coffee In The Room

One of my biggest pet peeves in life is not having coffee available in my room when traveling. Yes, ordering coffee to the room was easy and the staff at Princess were on top of my caffeine addiction, but it would have been nice to have one of those little coffee makers tucked away so I could make my own coffee.

One great thing about the Royal Princess is the ability to order coffee and breakfast the night before. Each day, you can fill out a form listing what items you’d like to order and what time they should be delivered, so that’s convenient.

4. Staffing Problems At The Lodges

Like so many other destinations, Alaska has a worker shortage. That desperate need for seasonal and long-term employees has led to some staffing issues at some of the lodges. While the Royal Princess ship boasts 1,346 crew members from more than 30 different countries, some of the lodges had problems filling spots, which led to slowdowns, some maintenance issues, and longer wait times.

My best advice is to stay patient with the destinations and with the staff that is working. Everyone is doing the best they can with less.

All in all, my first “big cruise” experience was stellar and has made me a believer! Hopefully, this won’t be my last cruise, and if you yearn for an easy, well-organized way to experience Alaska, the Royal Princess Alaska Cruisetour is the way to go.

This route combines a breathtaking cruise with a land tour that takes you deep into the heart of Alaska’s interior, allowing you to explore the stunning national parks and experience the wilderness up close.

The Alaska Cruisetour typically begins with a cruise along either the Voyage of the Glaciers or Inside Passage route, where you’ll have the opportunity to witness the majestic glaciers and abundant wildlife. Once the cruise portion is complete, the land tour begins, taking you to the most iconic destinations in Alaska.

Comparing Routes: Scenery and Wildlife

When it comes to experiencing the stunning scenery and abundant wildlife of Alaska, each route offered by Princess Cruises provides its own unique charm and opportunities. Let’s compare the three routes, Voyage of the Glaciers, Inside Passage, and Alaska Cruisetours, in terms of their scenery and wildlife experiences.

The Voyage of the Glaciers route is renowned for its awe-inspiring glaciers and towering ice walls. Sailing through Glacier Bay National Park and witnessing the calving glaciers is a highlight of this route. The Hubbard Glacier, the longest tidewater glacier in Alaska, is another magnificent sight to behold. The route offers breathtaking views of the icy landscapes, snow-capped peaks, and crystal-clear waters.

When it comes to wildlife, you can spot humpback whales, orcas, sea lions, and harbor seals in the glacier-rich areas. Bald eagles soar overhead, and if you’re lucky, you may even catch a glimpse of bears foraging along the shoreline. The Voyage of the Glaciers route offers spectacular scenery and wonderful opportunities to witness Alaska’s marine and terrestrial wildlife.

Inside Passage:

The Inside Passage route offers picturesque fjords, lush forests, and towering mountains. The Tracy Arm Fjord is a major highlight, with its towering cliffs and cascading waterfalls that seem to touch the sky. The scenic beauty of this route is truly unmatched, with serene coastal towns and breathtaking views around every corner.

As for wildlife, the Inside Passage is a paradise. You can spot humpback whales breaching the water’s surface, orcas hunting for their next meal, and playful sea otters frolicking in the kelp forests. Keep your eyes peeled for bald eagles perched high in the trees. The Inside Passage route offers incredible opportunities to witness Alaska’s marine life in their natural habitat.

Alaska Cruisetours:

The Alaska Cruisetours combine the stunning scenery of the cruise portion with the wild and rugged landscapes of the national parks during the land tour. The route includes stops at Denali National Park, where you can witness the breathtaking views of the tallest peak in North America and explore the vast wilderness. The land tour also takes you to Fairbanks, where you can enjoy the beauty of the Chena River and learn about Native Alaskan culture.

As for wildlife, the Alaska Cruisetours offer excellent opportunities to see bears, moose, caribou, and other land-dwelling creatures in their natural habitat. Capture stunning photos of these magnificent animals against the backdrop of the pristine Alaskan wilderness.

Onboard the ship, all routes offer a variety of activities and amenities. Enjoy live entertainment shows, indulge in fine dining experiences, and relax in the onboard spa and wellness facilities. 11 Tips From a Princess Cruisetour in Alaska

princess cruise resort alaska

I stood on the pool deck of Majestic Princess after boarding the ship for the first time, taking in the snow-covered mountains all around me. They were gorgeous, but they weren’t the first I’d seen that week — or even that day.

That’s because I was on a cruisetour — part cruise and part land tour — and the adventures had hardly been confined to just the ship. Already that morning I had woken up to the mountains and turquoise waters of the Kenai Peninsula, visited a glacier, and spotted a teeny tiny iceberg floating in the depths. That week I had counted moose, watched a grizzly bear saunter down a snowy road in Denali National Park , traversed the rivers near Fairbanks, and raced four wheeled ATV’s through muddy back roads.

Others were just starting their vacations, but I was already deep into exploring, and ready to continue.

There are many benefits to a cruisetour and tips that help along the way. These are 11 things travelers should know before embarking on a Princess cruisetour in Alaska .

1. Pack Smart.

The weather in Alaska changes quickly and dramatically and can vary widely depending on where in the state you are. That means layers are key. On one day alone in Denali National Park on the land portion of our tour, it rained and snowed before the sun peeked out from behind the clouds all in a matter of an hour. And in the south on the cruise portion, I was hot walking around Juneau in a T-shirt.

Unfortunately a trip to Alaska is not the time to pack light. It’s important to pack everything from a warm jacket and light sweaters to a T-shirt and shorts. And keep in mind that an advance forecast is not always accurate.

2. Divide Your Clothes.

Between the weather and the dress code, the clothes you need for your land tour may be very different from the clothes you need on the ship. On land, it can be chilly and wet, and dinners tend to be more casual (a nice sweater and jeans is appropriate), while on the ship, the weather tends to be more mild since you’re further south and there are often at least two formal nights.

Travelers who start their cruisetour on land can choose to send their ship-only clothes ahead at the start of their vacation (note: you won’t be able to access them until you get on the ship). But for those who prefer to travel with just one bag, I recommend separating out what you know you won’t need — either in a packing cube or just a different section of your suitcase — so you have less to rifle through.

3. Don't Bet on Wildlife ...

Wildlife is of course wild. And while you’re more likely to see certain animals on different parts of your tour (moose in the interior of Alaska, whales on the coast, etc.), it’s not a guarantee. It also varies widely by the season: In spring and early summer, bears are emerging from hibernation and moose have their calves, according to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game , while fall sees animals like moose and caribou mating and often frequenting open areas.

Often, it’s just down to luck. On my trip we saw multiple humpback whales during a whale watching excursion, for example, but we didn’t see any orca. The day before, however, another group had seen a whole pod of orca on a different excursion.

4. ... Or Good Sightseeing Visibility.

While Alaska’s natural sites are not necessarily moving around in the same way the animals do, the constantly changing weather means a lot is left up to chance. During our tour, we were part of the unlucky 70 percent of visitors who didn't get to see the mountain Denali since it was constantly shrouded in clouds. That said, we did see some fantastic scenery both during our land tour (especially the turquoise waters of the Kenai River) and from the ship, and I was blown away by Alaska’s dramatic and expansive landscapes.

5. Book Everything.

Tours fill up fast in Alaska, and that’s especially true for some popular ones like helicopter excursions that land on a glacier. It’s important to book as far in advance as you can to ensure your vacation isn’t affected by your first option being sold out.

However, if you don’t get your first choice of excursion, that doesn’t mean your trip is ruined. In Icy Strait Point, for example, I ended up with my fourth choice of excursion — the world’s largest ZipRider — and it ended up being a blessing in disguise, allowing me to (at least temporarily) conquer my fears and get my heart pumping in the most exhilarating way. There’s no shortage of adventures in Alaska from driving a zodiac boat searching for bald eagles to kayaking in the pristine nature, fishing for salmon — and having your catch cooked up for dinner — and more, so there’s always something great to book.

But while it’s important to book experiences (it’s why you’re in Alaska, after all), it’s also important to leave yourself a little leeway. I loved my half day whale watching tour in Juneau, and I also loved walking around the capital city after, snacking on popcorn and a local IPA at the Devil's Club Brewing Company and shopping for soft T-shirts at the Alaska Shirt Company .

6. Try New Things.

A vacation is a great time to try new things, and that’s especially true in Alaska. That’s the attitude I went in with when I hopped on an ATV just outside Denali National Park and revved the engine. I may have started out slow and a bit hesitant, but by the end I was zooming through the backroads, hurtling myself into puddles, mud-splattered and smiling from ear to ear.

Of course, it’s important to read the description and its rating (easy, moderate, or strenuous) and only sign up for an excursion you feel confident you can do. But if there’s ever a time to challenge yourself, this is it.

7. Tour First.

There are a few reasons touring first and cruising second makes the most sense. One is practical: if your checked bag gets lost or delayed (which is not an uncommon occurrence anymore), being on land for several days makes it easier for the airline to deliver it to you.

Second, land tour itineraries tend to be very packed and adventurous — with early wake-up calls, back-to-back activities, and luggage logistics to consider. And when you do the land tour on the front end, the first couple days of the cruise portion tend to be sea days. It creates a nice balance when you go all-out for the first few days of your trip and then relax before once again packing in the adventure with cruise excursions in port stops.

And then there’s the fact that you see different things on land and by sea. On my tour, I felt I got a better overview of Alaska and a better feel for its expansiveness during the land portion, which I appreciated seeing first. Then, when I got to the coastal towns on the cruise, I was able to appreciate them for their quaint charm. I also saw a lot more wildlife on the land portion, which meant any animals I saw during the cruise were just a bonus.

8. Check Inclusions.

Princess offers the option of booking an “on your own” tour as well as a “Connoisseur Escorted” tour. The first doesn’t come with meals and other extras — and those can quickly add up — so it’s a good idea to be prepared.

9. Eat Local.

One of the best ways to experience a destination is through its food, and that’s definitely true in Alaska. The Last Frontier is known for its super fresh fish and other local delicacies (think: reindeer hot dogs and salmon spread). Alaska’s cities also have a ton of small businesses serving up innovative menus — like smoked tacos from the El Green-Go’s food truck in Anchorage and nutritional yeast popcorn from the Devil's Club Brewing Company in Juneau — that give travelers a true taste of the state.

10. Take Part in Enrichment.

A sea day doesn’t have to mean a lazy day on an Alaska cruise. In fact, our cruising day through Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve was one of the most active as I watched park rangers board our ship and listened to presentations throughout the day on what I was seeing and the history of the majestic landscape in front of me. The information was broadcast across the ship and on individual stateroom TV’s, and we were given a schedule of when we would reach certain highlights (like the breathtaking Margerie Glacier).

The park rangers also set up a small shop on board and hosted a Junior Ranger program for any children on the ship.

Princess also offers a North to Alaska program, which includes special excursions like the chance to head out on the water and experience what it’s like on the Discovery Channel program, Deadliest Catch .

11. Don’t Skip Out on Vancouver

Most Alaska cruises start or end in Vancouver , and it’s definitely worth adding on some time in the British Columbia city. Pop into local jewelry and artist shops and feast on warm pot pies on Granville Island, and admire the antique Gastown Steam Clock as you stroll through the waterfront neighborhood’s charming red-bricked streets. Finish your day with an amazing meal at Botanist — which sits inside the Fairmont Pacific Rim hotel and just steps from the cruise terminal — where we indulged in decadent dishes like cavatelli with shaved truffles, and lamb with a lamb bacon jus as part of the restaurant’s thoughtful (and delicious) chef’s tasting menu.

The best Alaska cruises for every type of traveler

MSN has partnered with The Points Guy for our coverage of credit card products. MSN and The Points Guy may receive a commission from card issuers.

Even with a season that only runs from April through October, there are some 40 big ships and dozens of small ships cruising Alaska , making it one of the most popular cruise destinations in the world after the Caribbean and Europe. The best Alaska cruises range from off-the-beaten-path voyages on vessels carrying fewer than 100 passengers to weeklong jaunts through the Inside Passage aboard megaships that hold thousands.

The itinerary choices are numerous in Alaska. Some ships stick to tried-and-true ports, sailing through Southeast Alaska and into western Canada. Others wander deeper along the Alaska coastline to places such as the Kenai Peninsula, north to Nome and Barrow and even deep into the Bering Sea.

Some trips hit multiple national parks; others dive into Alaska culture, allowing guests to learn the stories told by totem poles or hear about “the big one” from a fisherman at a dive bar.

It can be hard to figure out which ship will deliver your idea of a “bucket list” experience in The Last Frontier. A lot comes down to your travel style, preferences and budget. Some travelers demand luxury, while others don’t mind going less fancy if it means close encounters with bears and other creatures in the wilderness. Some look for romance, while others want to introduce the kids or grandkids to glaciers and eagles, gold panning and sled dogs.

The good news is there’s a ship in Alaska for you no matter your taste or style. Here’s a beginner’s guide to the best Alaska cruises to help you narrow down your choices.

Best for megaresort fans

Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean both sail some of their largest ships in Alaska. They are floating megaresorts, carrying thousands, and are big on amenities, glitz and a certain amount of glamor — think flashy casinos, Broadway shows, lavish spas. Dining and drinking venues number in the dozens, while amusement park features thrill the kids and adrenaline-seekers.

Norwegian Encore

On Norwegian Encore, you can race along a go-kart racetrack, compete in outdoor laser tag and zoom down slides at the water park while you traverse Alaska’s Inside Passage. The ship sails seven-night cruises from Seattle, visiting Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan in Alaska, as well as Victoria, British Columbia, and Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve .

Ovation of the Seas

On Royal Caribbean’s Quantum-class ships, you can order a drink from a robotic bartender, try simulated skydiving or surfing experiences and take a ride in a glass capsule that travels high above your ship on a mechanical arm — a weird and wonderful way to see the Alaska scenery.

Ovation of the Seas sails round-trip from Seattle on seven-night cruises, but the exact itinerary varies by week. The ship cruises Endicott Arm for scenic views of Dawes Glacier and typically visits three Alaska ports and Victoria.

Best for land and sea adventures

You’ve traveled far to get to Alaska, and it would be a shame to miss inland sights such as Denali National Park and Preserve and the sight of Denali, North America’s largest peak — so big it’s often shrouded in clouds caused by its own weather system.

Market leaders Holland America Line and Princess Cruises both send a half-dozen ships to Alaska each year, and they have 75 and 55 years in the market, respectively.

They top the list in terms of cruises, as well as cruise tours, which combine time sailing with overnight stays on land. The companies operate their own lodges, rail cars and motorcoaches for exploration of Alaska’s interior and beyond. Many of the ships have permission to sail in Glacier Bay.

Related: The coolest things to do on an Alaska cruise

Choose from 10- to 17-night land tours that combine a standard weeklong cruise (sometimes half a cruise) with time spent exploring Alaska’s interior by bus, train or even plane.

Holland America will base six ships in Alaska in 2024, with tour offerings to Denali, Fairbanks and Anchorage.

However, it also offers nine- to 14-night cruise tours on Koningsdam that head into the Canadian Yukon, following the route of the Klondike Gold Rush from Alaska to northwestern Canada. Disembark your cruise ship in Skagway, then travel to Whitehorse and Dawson City in the Yukon before continuing on to Fairbanks (the gateway to Arctic Alaska), Denali National Park and Anchorage.

Sapphire Princess

Princess Cruises offers a cruise tour where you visit four national parks: Glacier Bay, Denali, the Kenai Fjords and America’s largest national park, Wrangell-St. Elias. The 15- and 17-night trips combine a seven-night cruise on Sapphire Princess from Vancouver to Whittier, Alaska, with another week or more on land, ending in Fairbanks or Anchorage.

Best for travelers on a budget

Older ships in Norwegian and Royal Caribbean’s fleets tend to offer more reduced prices than you’ll find on the lines’ larger and newer ships, based on the fact the older ships don’t have as many bells and whistles.

Since they have so many ships in the market, Holland America Line and Princess Cruises also tend to offer frequent sales — especially on their older tonnage. These ships have a loyal following and tend to have fewer families on board, which some couples find particularly appealing.

If you’re looking for other surefire ways to save, consider sailings in the area’s shoulder season. You’ll find better deals from April to early June and in September than you will in the height of summer.

Also, in Alaska, balcony cabins are highly desirable, with everyone seeking views of the wilderness, snow-capped peaks and glaciers. As those reserves get low, the prices tend to get higher. Bargain seekers should either book early for these accommodations or choose inside, outside or guarantee cabins (where you don’t pick your room location) to save more.

Radiance of the Seas

Royal Caribbean’s 20-year-old ship Radiance of the Seas mainly sails weeklong, one-way cruises between Vancouver and Seward, Alaska, with prices below $100 per person, per night, for inside and outside cabins on many departures.

However, its early-season May 2024 sailing from Seward to Vancouver is the cheapest Royal Caribbean Alaska cruise of the season. It starts at $368 per person for an inside cabin.

Grand Princess and Sapphire Princess

Princess Cruises has so many ships based in Alaska that you’re bound to find deals, especially on shoulder-season cruises. Both Grand and Sapphire Princess offer weeklong Alaska cruises in May 2024 starting from $548 per person for inside cabins. The itinerary starts in Vancouver and ends in Whittier, Alaska, with calls in Ketchikan, Juneau and Skagway and scenic cruising in Glacier Bay and College Fjord.

Best for off-the-beaten-path travel

Want to see and deeply experience coastal Alaska, and don’t mind a mellower environment where lectures and impromptu guitar singalongs replace casinos and show productions? Consider lines such as UnCruise Adventures , Lindblad Expeditions and Alaskan Dream Cruises, all with ships that carry fewer than 100 passengers (and in the case of Alaskan Dream, even under 20 passengers).

On these small ships, captains have the flexibility to alter itineraries and linger if the naturalist onboard spots a pod of whales or bears digging for clams on a beach.

Small ships can go places bigger ships can’t, so itineraries stretch far beyond the traditional ports. You’ll visit more remote places such as Petersburg, a fishing town with strong Norwegian roots, and Wrangell, one of Alaska’s oldest communities. Some itineraries are conducted entirely in the wild, with no port calls at all.

UnCruise Adventures

UnCruise Adventures explores Southeast Alaska on seven-, 12- and 14-night itineraries. A day might start with a morning birding expedition, continue with a kayaking adventure and end with an evening campfire ashore. You might visit LeConte and Baird Glaciers (where the big ships don’t go), plus UnCruise has the only permits for hiking and biking adventures on Chichagof Island.

Lindblad Expeditions

Lindblad Expeditions frequents off-the-beaten-path destinations in both Alaska and British Columbia, with itineraries ranging from six to 15 nights.

Guests might explore the small fishing town of Petersburg or discover native petroglyphs on the beaches of Wrangell Island in Alaska, or search for grizzly bears in Canada’s Great Bear Rainforest. Lindblad has special permits to bring passengers into the wilderness of Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve and the Tongass National Forest, beyond what the big ships can offer.

Alaskan Dream Cruises

Alaskan-owned Alaskan Dream Cruises’ ships carry 12 to 76 passengers to remote Native villages that rarely see visitors, with plenty of time for wildlife viewing far from the cruise ship crowds. Itineraries range from five to nine nights, from departure ports such as Sitka, Ketchikan and Juneau.

Best for families

If you’re traveling with your kids or grandkids in Alaska and want an activity- and entertainment-packed experience, target the newest and biggest ships of Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, Carnival and especially Disney Cruise Line. All have excellent camp-like activity programs for kids, plus eye-popping amusement attractions.

Disney Wonder

On Disney ships, Goofy might make an appearance as you admire soaring eagles, blue icebergs and glaciers. The extensive children’s program, entertainment and such activities as water slides and play areas deliver what you would expect from the purveyor of dreams. Bonus: Cabins are designed with families in mind and include split bathrooms (one with a toilet and sink, the other with a shower/tub combo and sink).

Discovery Princess

While lacking in whiz-bang attractions, Princess Cruises is another good choice, both for its children’s and teens program, complete with spacious facilities, and for such programming as bringing sled dogs on board, which is a hit with young passengers. The line’s newest ship, Discovery Princess, sails round trip from Seattle, a convenient U.S. home port for families to fly or drive to.

Carnival Spirit

Water slides, a partnership with Dr. Seuss and three hangouts for kids and teens make Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Spirit a great bet for families in Alaska.

The ship’s huge array of included quick eats — pizza, tacos, Guy Fieri’s burgers and unlimited soft serve ice cream — and casual atmosphere take the stress out of dining with the family. The ship sails round trip from Seattle on seven-night itineraries that call in Skagway, Juneau, Ketchikan and Victoria, with scenic cruising in Tracy Arm Fjord.

Best for luxury lovers

If you envision sipping Champagne as you watch a glacier thunderously calve into the sea, consider booking one of the all-inclusive luxury cruise lines in Alaska: Seabourn , Regent Seven Seas Cruises or Silversea .

All these lines include ships that are experts at delivering gourmet cuisine and the other finer things in life in intimate, cushy floating environments. Additionally, all the lines are big on featuring lectures by experts, which provides passengers with a deeper insight into Alaska.

Itineraries tend to include the popular ports and beyond. You might, for instance, visit Wrangell and Prince Rupert, a port city in Canada, and linger in places such as the Misty Fjords and Prince William Sound. Seven- to 14-night sailings embark from ports such as Vancouver, Seward and Juneau.

Seven Seas Explorer

Regent’s 750-passenger Seven Seas Explorer is an all-suite ship offering guests in Alaska multiple gourmet onboard restaurants, all-inclusive beverages, free airfare and included gratuities. Many shore excursions are complimentary. Enjoy little luxuries, like an afternoon in the thermal suite of the two-story spa-and-fitness center, or really splurge out by booking the Regent Suite, the most lavish suite you’ll find at sea.

Seabourn Odyssey

The 450-passenger Seabourn Odyssey boasts an onboard expedition team and does a posh version of expedition cruising in Alaska, using inflatable Zodiac craft and kayaks.

Seabourn calls its program Ventures by Seabourn. Experts onboard these sailings include naturalists, biologists and other scientists who are members of the expedition team. Once guests finish communing with nature, they can indulge in complimentary Champagne and caviar on board or relish a meal created by famed chef, Thomas Keller.

Best for solo travelers

Solo travelers don’t always have to pay double to cruise Alaska on their own. Several ships feature cabins designed and priced for one. Single cruisers should also note that luxury lines Silversea and Seabourn, while not cheap, do a great job of taking care of single cruisers, hosting them at dinner and providing easy opportunities to meet and mingle with other travelers.

Norwegian Bliss

The ships in Norwegian Cruise Line’s Breakaway and Getaway classes all have cozy studio cabins designed and priced for one person. Additionally, they’re located in a complex where a private lounge encourages mingling. Norwegian Bliss offers 82 solo rooms on its round-trip Seattle cruises that visit Dawes Glacier, Sitka and Icy Strait Point.

Quantum of the Seas

Royal Caribbean’s studio staterooms, on its Quantum-class ships in Alaska, give solo travelers the benefits of both decent space and balconies.

On Quantum of the Seas, choose a 101-square-foot inside cabin or a 119-square-foot ocean-view room with a 55-square-foot balcony. Either way, you get a full-size bed and plenty of space for one person. The ship sails a similar weeklong itinerary to sister ship Ovation of the Seas, round-trip from Seattle with scenic sailing along Endicott Arm.

Holland America offers ocean-view accommodations for one in Alaska only on Koningsdam. Measuring 127 to 172 square feet, these rooms come with a full-size bed and a picture window.

Koningsdam sails round trip from Vancouver to Juneau, Skagway and Ketchikan, with scenic cruising in Tracy Arm and Glacier Bay. Its cruises can be combined into nine- to 14-night cruise tours to the Yukon and Denali.

It looks like 2023 is the year that vacations take to the ocean again en masse. The vessels are larger and more decked out than ever

Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas

Cruise ships are on a mission to recapture the seas. The COVID pandemic forced cruise lines to pull their ships into port, but now that health concerns have eased, passengers are returning. They are finding an industry reborn.

As a longtime travel journalist, I have been on 170 ships, and I have seen how cruise lines can engage in a hospitality arms race. Before the pandemic struck, many new megaships were already on order, but the delay in launching means that 2023 will feel even more momentous for the industry. Come with us as we look at the crazy-huge world of cruises.

SHIP DESIGN

Making Big Ships Feel Less Big

THERE’S AN interesting paradox about megaships. The extreme sizes mean that cruise lines can add more and more things to do, but at some point, ships may become too large for passengers to easily enjoy. And so Royal Caribbean has divided its Icon of the Seas ship, to launch next year, into eight “neighborhoods,” the idea being that you choose the section that suits your interests and mostly stay in that area. One neighborhood caters to families with children, for example, while another is meant for young singles and couples.

Carnival Cruise Line has “adults-only spaces,” where passengers can enjoy some peace and quiet around hot tubs, pools and bars, away from the family crowd.

ENTERTAINMENT

Broadway Shows and Ways to Play Onstage

THE OLD Las Vegas–style revues are long gone. Now singers and dancers recruited from Broadway and London’s West End appear in slightly truncated versions of Broadway shows such as Summer: The Donna Summer Musical, which on the Norwegian Prima morphs into a big disco party with the audience.

Daytime entertainment likewise has been updated. While the old belly flop and hairy chest contests are out, a replacement has emerged: On Carnival’s Mardi Gras and its sister ships, you can watch—or play!— Family Feud Live .

Carnival Cruise Line’s Bolt roller coaster

Board a Floating Theme Park

ROLLER coasters are thrilling enough, but one at sea gives you the sensation of flying above the vast ocean blue. Melisa Colby, 62, has ridden the coaster on Carnival’s 5,282-passenger Mardi Gras. “The first time, I screamed,” says the preschool teacher from Jacksonville, Florida. “The second, third and fourth times, I was smiling and putting my arms up in the air.”

On Royal Caribbean’s Icon, travelers will enjoy a water park with six slides. Nearby, on an attraction that’s a combination skywalk, ropes course and thrill ride, you’ll be able to strap on a harness and walk a plank. At the end of the plank, the bottom drops out, and you’ll swing 154 feet above the ocean.

The Norwegian Prima Speedway

Norwegian Cruise Line’s new 3,100-passenger Norwegian Prima is topped with a go-kart track. Another attraction is a 10-deck drop in a waterless tube slide mostly suspended off the side of the ship.

Food on Celebrity Beyond

Eat Your Way Around the World

FOOD HAS always been a cruising calling card, and it has gotten better and more varied to reflect the growing “foodie” culture. Global flavors and vegan and vegetarian options are getting more play, and cruise companies have finally realized that their passengers might like to taste food from the destinations they’re visiting, such as jerk chicken when they sail to Jamaica.

To satisfy a whole lot of tastes, the Norwegian Prima has a complimentary Food Hall where you can choose from counters featuring Southern comfort food, Spanish tapas or Indian chicken tikka, to name a few options. “They are leading in trends that we are seeing on land and doing it so well,” says Colleen McDaniel, editor in chief of the leading website Cruise Critic.

Some cruise lines are adding new specialty restaurants that charge extra for upgraded choices, such as sushi and aged steaks. Big culinary names may be involved. Emeril Lagasse has New Orleans–style bistros on Carnival’s latest ships (a shrimp po’boy won’t break the bank at $6), while the 3,260-passenger Celebrity Beyond and sister ship Celebrity Ascent (debuting in December 2023) will boast restaurants by renowned chef Daniel Boulud (from $75 per person for three courses; $125 for five).

Over the years that traveler Jill Dill Vincent, 78, has cruised with Carnival, she has seen more sophisticated menus in the main dining rooms. “I love the lobster,” she says. Her husband, Ken, 74, favors the desserts, especially the “melting chocolate cake.”

Brewing Up Refreshment

THE CRAFT beer boom can’t be contained by land. The latest Carnival ships have onboard breweries. Also in vogue: molecular cocktails that smoke and change colors. At a bar on Carnival’s Mardi Gras, you can order the Crystal Ball, a tequila drink that arrives in a foggy orb. Norwegian Prima has a “sustainable” bar featuring drinks made with ingredients that might otherwise be discarded, as well as earth-friendly biodynamic wines.

PORTS OF CALL

Beyond the Beach

THE CARIBBEAN and Bermuda together represent 44 percent of the world cruise market, according to the Cruise Lines International Association, making them by far the world’s most popular cruise destinations. For North American travelers, cruises to Alaska and the Mediterranean are also expected to be popular this year as passengers regain their sea legs.

From left: Wildlife in the Caribbean; salmon fishing on a Princess cruise stop in Alaska.

That’s fairly typical. But what is changing is what travelers do when on shore: “more sustainable and local experiences,” says Roberta Jacoby, a hospitality and travel industry consultant. Cruise lines are fulfilling demand with cultural, adventure, multigenerational, lifestyle and wellness addon shore excursions via local operators. On Holland America Line and Princess Cruises ships in Alaska, you can go salmon fishing with a local fisherman and, after you reel in “the big one,” have your catch cooked by the ship’s chefs. On a Caribbean cruise, you might visit an ecopark and farm that promotes environmental education on St. Kitts or skip the beach in favor of a green monkey encounter at a wildlife reserve in Barbados.

STAY HEALTHY WHILE AT SEA

princess cruise resort alaska

IN THE WAKE of the pandemic, cruise ships have upgraded their health and safety systems, from hand sanitizers throughout the ship to medical-grade air filters in the ventilation systems to robots that shoot ultraviolet rays to kill bacteria.

But you’ll no longer need to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination to board many ships, though unvaccinated travelers are still encouraged to provide a negative COVID test result. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which shut down cruising in North America from March 2020 to June 2021, ended its intense monitoring of the industry in July 2022, saying that cruise passengers “can make their own risk assessment when choosing to cruise, much like they do in other settings.”

Here’s what to expect:

→ Cruise ship medical centers have been upgraded with equipment to test for COVID-19, and medical teams have added personnel to better treat anyone who falls ill, even severely ill.

→ When a passenger tests positive, contact tracing commences. On some ships, security cameras will use facial recognition to aid in this task; on the big ships with thousands of passengers you may be traced via an app on your smartphone or a smart wristband provided at check-in.

→ Passengers who get sick will be confined to their cabins or cabins set aside for quarantine purposes. Meals will be delivered to those rooms.

→ Wearing a mask is a personal choice.

ANOTHER ROUTE

Small Ships Can Come Up Big

THE AVERAGE ocean cruise ship carries about 2,125 passengers. But sharing a boat with so many people isn’t for everyone, which is why many smaller-ship excursions have become available.

“People who think that cruise ships have not changed since The Love Boat or that all ships are built for 5,000 of your closest friends are simply wrong,” says Rob Clabbers, president of Q Cruise + Travel in Chicago.

Small ships that carry fewer than 1,000 passengers don’t have amusement park attractions, but they have other benefits, especially for older travelers, including a more adult crowd. Viking bans anyone under age 18 on its 930-passenger ocean ships and on its riverboats.

A trio performs in the Wintergarden on a Viking cruise, which also offers tea service.

With their shallow drafts, small ships can navigate into more out-of-the-way places. It’s the difference between, say, docking next to other megaships in bustling St. Thomas and then getting passengers to shore via shuttle boats, and anchoring next to the superyachts of the rich and famous in trendy St. Barts. Since small ships don’t need to keep track of thousands of passengers, they also tend to stay longer in port, giving passengers more time to enjoy local dining and nightlife.

princess cruise resort alaska

The Evrima , a 149-suite ship that is part of the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection fleet.

On most of these cruises, you will pay a premium. Want a weeklong trip on a Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection ship that carries 298 passengers? That goes for $7,000 to $25,000 for most seven-night cruises. A cruise to Antarctica on equivalent lines costs about that much too. But some small-ship companies will reduce prices to less than $3,000 per person for seven-night sailings in the competitive Caribbean and during quieter seasons, such as fall and winter, in Europe.

SOME LEADING SMALL-SHIP CRUISE LINES

→ Windstar Cruises This line has a fleet of three 148- to 342-passenger sailing ships and three all-suite 312-passenger motor yachts. The informal environment on voyages features a lavish buffet served under the stars.

princess cruise resort alaska

→ Viking Ocean ships These ships follow the same all-inclusive model as the company’s riverboats in Europe. Viking in 2022 topped award lists by both  Travel + Leisure and Condé Nast Traveler.

princess cruise resort alaska

→ Azamara cruises The line’s four upscale ships top out at around 700 passengers and include cultural events with local performers.

princess cruise resort alaska

→ Other premium lines Also consider Celebrity Cruises, Holland America Line and Princess Cruises. Or look for older ships on mass-market lines, some of which carry fewer than 3,000 passengers. —F.G .
