Joie Chrome review

joie travel system dlx

  • Sonali Hindmarch

In a nutshell

A versatile travel system that will take your baby from birth through to toddlerhood for a great price.

What we tested

  • Incredible value for money, great basket, folds up small.
  • The wheels don’t swivel smoothly, difficult to carry on and off public transport without help.

British brand Joie has one simple mission - to make ‘better, safer, stronger’ parenting products that are less work and more fun.

Despite being a new player on the market Joie has recently become a company of firsts, having created the first UK government certified i-Size car seat - the i-Anchor , last year.

Aside from its award-winning car seat collection, Joie also produces a series of buggies, highchairs, travel cots and bouncers.

A part of its increasing collection, the Chrome is a versatile parent and world-facing travel system. Suitable from birth, when used with the separate carrycot, it is one of the cheapest in the lightweight buggies on the market.

The Chrome is sold on being lightweight, but how light is it?

The first thing you should know about the Joie Chrome is that while it’s small in stature, at 9.58kg it isn’t as lightweight as others in its category.

I take public transport a lot. And tube stations without step-free access means I have to rely on the kindness of strangers to help me get this buggy down onto the platform.

I can’t carry it on my own up and down the stairs.

So how small is it?

Size-wise, it’s quite compact. It certainly folds down small (80.8 (L) x 56.5 (W) x 26 (H) cm) in fact it folds to about the same size as my Bugaboo Bee , and takes up just over half of our boot when folded.

Tell us more about the folding.

The folding system happens to be one of my favourite features, as it’s really quick!

I can quickly put it down in restaurants to make more space. And, when I get home, putting it away in the cupboard isn’t an annoying hassle. It’s really easy!

That’s why I wouldn’t mind taking it on a flight with me. It folds down really small and would fit in most car boots easily.

How does it push?

It manoeuvres quite well on all surfaces; the pavements of my neighbourhood are narrow and populated with other mums and their buggies.

This means that any pushchair I have has to handle really well, be reactive and maneuverable and this buggy isn’t too bad, but it’s not excellent.

It isn’t a wonderfully smooth ride, but it’s not clunky and awkward either.

The Chrome has a swivel wheel lock feature that I honestly couldn’t think of a time when I’d need it. But the brake is great as it’s easy to get to and feels sturdy.

How comfortable does it feel?

It is nice and comfortable. My son prefers the upright position as he likes to see everything that’s happening and the hood is big enough to cover his eyes from the sun.

The footmuff makes it cosy for him, as do the padded back rest. When he falls asleep in it, the lie-flat position is great.

Is the Joie Chrome good value for money?

Yes, at £250 for a complete travel system with carrycot and Gemm car seat (sold separately) it is competitively cheap.

You’ll probably want to buy a colour pack to go with it – which contains the hood, footmuff and cosy covers for the straps and costs £49.99.

But it still works out to be the same price as the Mothercare Xpedior travel system and other lower-end travel systems from Graco , Bebe Confort and Mamas & Papas .

What’s in the box?

Any additional extras?

The colour pack - £50:

  • Footmuff Apron
  • 2 Chest Pads

Was it easy to build?

Yes, it’s incredibly easy to build. I didn’t even have to look at the instructions. The wheels just slotted on, as did the safety bar. The colour pack, which was the hood and foot-muff, were very easy to put on.

MadeForMums verdict?

The Chrome is a great value product that performs as well as, if not better, than many of its more expensive competitors. It is suitable from birth to around 19kilos and, after you’re finished with it, has a decent resale value on eBay.

If you have more than one child, the Mothercare buggy-board will also fit on the system, meaning your toddler can hop on for the ride.

It may not be as manoeuvrable as the Bugaboo Bee, mostly because of its larger wheels, but it’s a little more sturdy over kerbs and ruts for the same reason. And, of course, it’s less than half the price.

Joie Litetrax 4 DLX

The Joie Litetrax 4 DLX is a June 2021 upgrade of the original Joie Litetrax 4 . What is new? The difference between the Joie Litetrax 4 and the Joie Litetrax 4 DLX is, first and foremost, in the added handlebar adjustment. The Litetrax 4 DLX allows you to adjust the handle height depending on your needs telescopically. To add to that, the DLX's handle is covered with a more stylish leatherette (as opposed to the foam on the Litetrax 3 and Litetrax 4). Lastly, the Litetrax 4 DLX brings new fashionable colorways as well as no-adapters-needed compatibility with a Joie car seat.

Still a lightweight four-wheeler , the Joie Litetrax 4 DLX boasts a quick, compact, one-handed fold. Meant for urban use, it tries to make the push more comfortable thanks to all-wheel suspension . Thanks to the full recline of the seat, it is suitable from birth. For your newborn, a Joie Ramble carrycot or a car seat are available separately (the 'Maxi-Cosi-style car seats will fit on the bassinet adapters).

Car seats available with the car seat/carrycot adapters: Cybex Aton 5, Cybex Aton M, Cybex Aton Q, gb Artio Gold, gb Idan Platinum, Joie Gemm, Joie i-Gemm 2, Joie i-Level, Joie i-Snug, Maxi Cosi Rock, Maxi-Cosi Cabriofix, Maxi-Cosi Pebble, Maxi-Cosi Pebble Plus.

Joie Litetrax 4 DLX Features & Specifications

The seat unit, the canopy (hood), the bumper bar, the suspension, the handlebar, the carrycot, the car seat, the accessories & extra features, parent reviews of the joie litetrax 4 dlx, it's not perfect, but considering its price i think it was a good choice.

  • build construction
  • soft wheels
  • effective suspensions
  • maneuverability
  • lever backrest reclining
  • sun-open piece of fabric in the canopy when extended
  • canopy length is so-so
  • basket hardly accessible, nearly impossible to put a bag in
  • needs two hands to unfold

I am pretty happy with the Litetrax 4 DLX. It's not perfect, but considering its price, I think it has been a good choice.

EVA wheels are quite soft, so I like their feeling, also when I'm on uneven roads. I don't know if they're good on all terrains; I've tried them on grass (need more strength in pushing) and gravel (between hard and stuck).

Construction seems to be sturdy, and the weight is ok. When folded, it's a bit cumbersome, so it barely fits in my car boot. Maneuverability is very good, thanks to the wheels' quality and to the effective and soft suspensions. I like the fabrics, recline angles, and lever reclining system.

I don't like the unfolding system because it needs two hands.

The two major flaws of this stroller, to me, are the canopy and the basket.

The canopy: it isn't very long (in sleeping position, it barely covers the head of the baby), and above all, its main problem is that when you unzip it, you uncover a piece of fabric in peek-a-boo style that doesn't filter the sun. It's like having a window on a "slice" of the canopy.

The basket is hardly accessible, probably because of the low height of the stroller. You can only put small objects in there. Really hard to put a bag in.

Very nice city buggy

  • Good fabrics and coverage
  • Could be lighter

A very nice city buggy. We're happy with it. I just expected it will be a bit more lightweight, I guess.

Just a bit heavy to me

  • well padded
  • nice basket
  • adjustable handle height
  • a bit heavy
  • a bit noisy on terrain
  • leg rest feels short

As a mid size pushchair, GOOD. I like it overall. It's just a bit heavy to me.

Returned it

  • Looks great
  • Very nicely padded
  • Handle adjusts (finally!)
  • Front wheels

We returned it. I couldn't lift it in the car (I am quite petite) and the front wheels did this wobbly sound if not on smooth surfaces.

The wheels are not much for terrain

We really like it, just the wheels are not much for terrain. They rattle on bumps. Also, the seat is fantastically padded but a bit short to my taste. But the large canopy and good sun coverage are awesome, and I love the large storage.

Your questions about the Joie Litetrax 4 DLX

I would like to ask what are the compatible car seats that can be used with the Joie Litetrax 4 DLX? Do I need adapter too?

Since Joie Litetrax 4 DLX is a no-adapter system, you can only snap a Joie car seat, in particular a Joie Dedicated car seat that is sold in a travel system with the pushchair. Not everywhere is this system sold. However, that dedicated Joie car seat snaps on the child's bumper bar, which is why only that car seat works - it has a wedge in the back that just fits on the bar. No other brands' car seats are officially compatible to be paired with this stroller.

However, if there is a Joie Litetrax 4 DLX carrycot compatibility available in your country, the carrycot adapters actually accept Joie, Cybex, Maxi-Cosi, Kiddy, Recaro, Nuna car seats.

Try googling 'Joie Litetrax DLX travel system' or write to Joie's customer service about availability.

And check also the Joie Litetrax 4 (without the DLX in name) that does have adpaters for Joie, Maxi-Cosi, Cybex and more car seats with the same attachment system available.

Thank you for answering my question about the Litetrax 4 DLX so quickly! The information you provided was so helpful.

Do you know if the stroller is exactly the same as the original litetrax 4 (in terms of seat size / stroller dimensios)? It seems like the only real differences are the extendable handle bar and the leather rather than foam finish? Plus a couple of points to do with adapters which will make no difference to me anyway.

I was initially looking at the original version and prefer the design of the cup holders and pocket on it for phone, keys etc. So if they are much the same I would probably go for the original.

Thanks again!

Heya, Jill,

There are no real, functional differences in terms of build, wheels quality, push quality or spaciousness, really - the only thing that matters for a parent here is the adjustable, updated handlebar, the seat size did not change. I personally would probably go for the simpler version, if the price was better and I wouldn't be too tall (which would make the extendable handle a must of sorts).

Your description of the stroller says from birth to 15kg. I'm looking at it on the Smyths Toys website as interested in buying and it says from birth to 22kg. This is quite important in my decision making to keen to know which weight is correct?

Every country has different laws and requirements. When introduced to the market, the Litetrax line was, indeed, up to 15 kg - it may be that in your country, the brand did extra weight testing to be able to claim the load capacity of up to 22 kg. However, I must warn you that a 22 kg (a 5-6 years old) will be very, very tight in the seat that is not as long on this pushchair. Also good to know is that most up-to-15-kg strollers of an OK quality can actually handle more than that - the problem is more the room inside than the weight maximum.
