Learn more about Saudi Arabia

Best time to visit.

The best time to visit Saudi Arabia is during the winter (from November to February) when temperatures are around 22°C to 28°C and it’s comfortable enough to spend long periods of time outside. Saudi Arabia’s climate is classified as arid desert, so this means extremely hot summers (it’s not advisable to travel during this time).

Culture and customs

Saudi Arabia is a highly conservative country when it comes to social rules and there is an expectation for men and women to dress modestly like in the surrounding Middle Eastern countries. Saudi Arabia in general is influenced by Arab and Islamic culture with a core focus on faith, traditional roles and a family-orientated mindset.

Music and dance are a feature of everyday life, with traditional instruments played and dances performed at celebrations and cultural holiday festivities. Along with the thriving arts scene in Saudi Arabia, sport is huge throughout the kingdom with football (soccer) being the most popular.

History and government

Saudi Arabia shares a lot of its early history with much of the Arabian Peninsula, experiencing the rise of Islam in the 7 th century and the establishment of Muslim states in the 15 th century. However, due to its remote location and poverty, the country remained somewhat isolated from the general military and political trends from the 16th century onwards.

Fast forward to the 18 th century when the Saud dynasty (house of rulers in the 18 th and 19 th centuries) came into power, conquering much of Arabia until their defeat at the hands of the Ottoman Sultan and the Viceroy of Egypt in 1818. A second Saudi state was created by members of the Saud dynasty in 1824 but civil wars eventually ensued after succession disputes and the state fell out of Saudi hands until 1902. The kingdom of Saudi Arabia was royally decreed in 1932 and is still ruled by the monarchy, with a judicial system that's based on Islamic law (Shari'ah).

Eating and drinking

Saudi Arabian cuisine draws influences from surrounding Persian Gulf countries, but religion plays a role in culinary practices too. For instance, as per Islam, Muslims don’t eat pork or drink alcohol and other meats like lamb, beef and chicken has to be prepared in a specific way (halal).

But there are plenty of traditional meat dishes that locals love and that travellers to the country must try. Kebabs are big in Saudi Arabia and so is shwarma, both made with meat (such as chicken or lamb) that’s been roasted on a spit and served, either by itself or in pita bread as a sandwich.

Saudi Arabians also eat a lot of seafood, particularly fish and shrimp, so you’ll likely see dishes like machbous (rice with seafood) on most restaurant menus. Also be prepared to eat flat bread with every meal, followed by a selection of fruit (usually dates, watermelon and grapes) as dessert.

To wash it all down, locals love to drink coffee in the traditional Turkish way.

Geography and environment

Saudi Arabia is situated in Western Asia, bordering the Red Sea on the west, Yemen and Oman on the south, the United Arab Emirates and the Persian Gulf on the east and Iraq and Jordon on the north.

Its terrain is largely uninhabited sandy desert with frequent sand and dust storms. Saudi Arabia is rich in natural resources including petroleum, natural gas, iron ore, gold and cooper, and due to the production of these materials, the country experiences a range of environmental issues such as ground, water and air pollution, as well as extreme fossil fuel usage, deforestation and desertification.

If it’s shopping you’re after, you can’t go past two of Saudi Arabia’s biggest cities: Riyadh and Jeddah. Both cities have upscale shopping centres and department stores you can easily get lost in, as well as local markets full of traditional ingredients and souvenirs.

Popular shopping locations in Riyadh for both luxury lovers and families:

  • Centria Mall
  • Kingdom Centre
  • Al Nakheel Mall
  • Granada Mall
  • Souq Makkah

Popular shopping locations in Jeddah for both bargain hunters and electronic fiends:

  • Mall of Arabia
  • Read Sea Mall
  • Jeddah International Shopping Center
  • Al Balad district
  • Gabel Street Souq

Saudi Arabia travel FAQs

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travellers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travellers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Why is Intrepid launching a trip to Saudi Arabia now?

Saudi Arabia opened its doors to international tourism in 2019 and we know that many of our travellers are curious about visiting there. Our aim was to create a trip that would offer our customers unique and authentic experiences that have a positive impact on local communities, particularly women.

With their emphasis on local interaction and cultural insights, we felt Women’s Expeditions was our ideal first product in Saudi. We carried out firsthand research on the ground, including speaking to local people from all walks of life. As with all Women’s Expeditions, the trip creates opportunities for local female leaders and guides while also supporting women-owned and operated businesses across our supply chain.

Do I need a visa to travel to Saudi Arabia?

As a general rule, travellers will need to obtain a visa before arrival in Saudi Arabia. However, there are a range of nationals that can apply for an eVisa online to make the process as easy as possible, so you don’t need to spend time at embassy and consulate appointments. The visa application process will require you to provide information about your trip, return travel plans and accommodation details and might prompt you for bank account information and employment contracts.

Is tipping customary in Saudi Arabia?

Tipping is common in service-oriented businesses such as restaurants, hotels, and taxis, but it is not routine; but rather a way to show appreciation for good service. It is also not required if a service charge is already included in the bill. Saudis usually tip expatriate service people and individual services in hotels despite the overall service charge. Taxis and ride-hailing services such as Uber and Careem usually have a built-in tip option, but you can also tip in cash if you prefer.

Tipping guides, drivers and other tourism services providers is also common and it's a way to show appreciation for their services. It's worth noting that tipping in Saudi Arabia is a cultural and personal decision, and it's always a good idea to follow the local customs and traditions, and to tip in line with your budget and satisfaction with the service received.

What’s the internet access like in Saudi Arabia?

Internet access is widely available in Saudi Arabia, and the country has a well-developed infrastructure for telecommunications. The country's internet penetration rate is quite high and most people have access to high-speed 4G and 5G internet.

The government of Saudi Arabia regulates the internet, and there are some restrictions on access to certain websites and online content, such as those related to political dissent, pornography, gambling, and other sensitive topics. Social media platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, are widely used in the country, but they are also subject to government censorship. WhatsApp is commonly used for chat but cannot be used for calls and video calls.

Will my mobile phone work in Saudi Arabia?

Mobile phone networks are widely available in Saudi Arabia and getting a local SIM card for your phone is relatively easy. Upon arrival, you can purchase a SIM card at the airport or at any of the mobile phone stores located in most major cities and towns. The process is straightforward and you will need to provide a passport or a valid ID to register your SIM card.

Can I drink the tap water in Saudi Arabia?

The water supply in the major cities and towns is treated and is safe to drink in theory, but because of older pipe-systems even many locals refrain from doing so. In some rural areas or remote regions, the water may not be treated and may not be safe to drink. It's also worth noting that in some places, the water may have a high mineral content, which can affect its taste and may not be suitable for everyone.

What is ATM access like in Saudi Arabia?

The country has a well-developed banking system, and ATMs are widely available in most cities and towns. You can find ATMs in banks, airports, shopping centres, and other public places.

Most ATMs accept international cards such as Visa, Mastercard, American Express, etc. However, it's always good to check with your bank if your card will work in Saudi Arabia, and also to inform them of your travel plans. You should also note that ATM withdrawal limits may vary depending on the bank and the type of card you are using.

It's also common to find that some ATMs have a limit per transaction, while others have a daily limit, so you may have to withdraw money in multiple transactions.

Are all credit cards accepted in Saudi Arabia?

You can use credit or debit cards, or even international credit cards in most of the shops, restaurants and hotels in Saudi Arabia, however, it's always good to check with the specific establishment if they accept foreign cards.

It's also worth noting that Saudi Arabia was, until recently, a cash-based society, and it's always good to have some cash on hand, especially when travelling to rural or remote areas of the country where access to ATMs and other banking services may be limited.

What are the toilets like in Saudi Arabia?

Western style bathrooms are found all across the country with the same amenities and facilities you’d expect elsewhere.

What will it cost for a...?

Expect to pay on average 8AUD for cup of coffee. Sit down meals will vary from 38AUD to 123AUD per person depending on the location and type of establishment. While street food, especially in smaller towns and cities could be as little as 8-15AUD.

Is Saudi Arabia safe for female travellers?

It’s generally considered safe for female travellers to visit Saudi Arabia, whether solo or as part of a group as, o verall, the rate of crime in Saudi Arabia is low.

As with any destination, there are a few do’s and don’t’s that all travellers should follow, such as adhering to local laws, dressing appropriately in places of worship and respecting cultural traditions. However, women should behave and dress in a similar way to locals and stick to well-populated areas, especially when venturing out at nighttime.

Saudi Arabia’s judicial system is based on Islamic law (Shari'ah) and this may be different from what travellers’ are accustomed to in their own countries. Travellers should check their own country’s travel advisory for details, before travelling.

It's against the law to have sexual relations or live together outside of marriage.

Are there any local laws I should be aware of?

Saudi Arabia welcomes tourists – as with all destinations, travellers to the country should check their own country’s travel advisory for details, before travelling.

Saudi Arabia’s judicial system is based on Islamic law (Shari'ah) and this may be different from what travellers’ are accustomed to in their own countries.

In general, when it comes to Saudi Arabia's laws and social rules:

  • It is illegal to preach or publicly practice a religion other than Islam.
  • Refrain from questioning religious values or public morals.
  • Don't criticise the country, its royal family or practicing religion in public (including on social media).
  • Dress modestly in public.
  • Alcohol is prohibited in Saudi Arabia.

Same-sex relationships are illegal. Saudi Arabia does not recognise or allow same-sex marriages and rights.

What should I wear in Saudi Arabia?

Travellers should be aware of the socially conservative rules when it comes to the dress code in Saudi Arabia. It is no longer a legal requirement for women to cover their hair and wear an abaya (long sleeved robe) in Saudi, but w omen should still dress modestly when out and about (especially when visiting places of worship), covering their shoulders, chest and knees, as well as wearing any loose-fitting dresses or pants.

Due to the hot climate in Saudi Arabia, pack lightweight clothing like cotton and linen, so you're not uncomfortable when you're exploring during the day.

Is Saudi Arabia LGBTQIA+ friendly?

Unfortunately, LGBTQIA+ rights aren’t recognised in Saudi Arabia and a high degree of caution should be undertaken when travelling. Homosexuality remains illegal and carries a heavy penalty such as imprisonment and deportation.

Additionally, being transgender is not recognised in Saudi Arabia. You will not be able to enter Saudi Arabia if your passport shows 'X' in the gender field. Transgender people could also face difficulties with dress code and access to medical care.

What public holidays are celebrated in Saudi Arabia?

  • 21st April Eid al-Fitr (End of Ramadan)
  • 27th June Eid al-Adha (Feast of Sacrifice)
  • 23rd September (National Day)

Please note these dates may vary. See the current list of public holidays in Saudi Arabia.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before travelling?

Absolutely. All passengers travelling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

For more information on insurance, please go to: Travel Insurance

Travel to the birthplace of Islam on one of our Saudi Arabia group tour. This undiscovered gem encompasses a vast expanse of arid desert and mountains. The second largest country in the Arab world (after Algeria), it covers some 2,150,000 square kilometres and is the only nation with coastlines on both the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf. Home to Mecca and Medina, the Kingdom is the spiritual caretaker of the two holiest shrines in the Islamic world, a role it takes very seriously. Staunchly traditional, the country’s citizens are required by law to be Muslims and it is one of the few places on earth that has a ‘religious’ police force.

But this is also a land with a vibrant cultural pedigree. Away from the glamour and glitter of its oil-rich modern cities, the country is strewn with World Heritage sites and remote mountain villages. Amongst the rock-hewn splendours of Madain Saleh you can find Nabatean treasures on a par with those at Petra, while the mud-brick ruins of Diriyah provide a fascinating insight into the origins of the Saud Dynasty. The mountains of the south-west are home to a surprising collection of traditional villages that still evoke echoes of the past, whilst the haunting ruins of Al Ula provide a chance to explore one of the most impressive ghost towns anywhere in the Middle East.

Enigmatic and intriguing, Saudi Arabia by its very nature is one of the last great adventures left to discover. Be one of the first to discover it on a Wild Frontiers small group tour to Saudi Arabia.

Given the extreme summer heat of the desert, October to March is definitely the optimum time for visiting Saudi Arabia. At these times of year typically you can expect daytime temperatures to reach 20 - 30oC with night times being surprisingly cool, often in the single digits. Rain is rare although not unheard of!

USEFUL INFORMATION

Health and Vaccinations

There are no mandatory immunisations for travellers to Saudi Arabia though you should be up-to-date with Typhoid, Tetanus, Polio and Hepatitis A. We recommend you seek advice from your local GP or travel centre as to the correct immunisations and preventative treatments.

Currency

In Saudi Arabia the official unit of currency is the Saudi Riyal, which is subdivided into 100 halala.

To check out the latest exchange rate for the places that you are visiting you can go to www.oanda.com .

Cultural Sensitivity

On our tours you will frequently interact with local people, each with their own distinct customs and traditions. We therefore ask you to be considerate and to treat them with respect. Your tour-leaders and guides will always be able to advise you accordingly.

Saudi society is going through some major changes at the moment so please bear in mind that any considerations raised here may alter at any time. Ultimately the Kingdom remains a deeply conservative country and is likely to be different from any other destination to which you may have travelled.

Tourism (other than for religious purposes) is a new concept for the Kingdom so come expecting enthusiastic but inexperienced levels of service. Encouragingly, in contrast to previous edicts, there are no current restrictions placed on adult women travelling solo and while it is expected that foreign visitors will dress conservatively, women will not have to wear an abaya (the long black dress covering the body from shoulders to feet) and they will not have to cover their hair.

Alcohol however is still currently forbidden and should not be brought into the country; you should also not arrive into Saudi Arabia under the influence of alcohol.

Saudi Arabia is a Muslim country in which Islamic law is strictly enforced. You should respect local traditions, customs, laws and religions at all times and be aware of your actions to ensure that they do not offend.

Public displays of affection are not considered as being consistent with local culture and traditions.

Both men and women are asked to dress modestly in public, avoiding tight fitting clothing or clothes with profane language or images. Women should cover shoulders and knees in public.

The public practice of any form of religion other than Islam is illegal including wearing religious jewellery for example a crucifix.  So please be mindful of anything that may be interpreted as religious iconography.

Language & Religion

In Saudi Arabia, the major language is Arabic, although English is commonly spoken in larger cities. Saudi Arabia is a Muslim country in which Islamic law is strictly enforced and the public practice of any form of religion other than Islam is illegal.

Time

Saudi Arabia is 3 hours ahead of GMT.

A useful website to check the time zone differences is www.worldtimezone.com .

Food and drink

Food in Saudi Arabia is full of flavour and packed with spices, dishes are often rice-based with flat breads and meats such as lamb, goat, chicken and beef.

Food can vary from region to region, but Kabsah is considered by many to be national dish.  Kabsah compromises of rice, meat, vegetables and a mixture of spices.  The spices can differ depending on location but cloves, cardamom, saffron and nutmeg are often used.  Some varieties may be enhanced with nuts such as peanuts, almonds, pine nuts etc.

Lunch is considered the main meal of the day.  Traditional dishes are preferred but in larger towns a full range of international cuisine is available.  Pork and alcohol are forbidden under Islamic law.

There is a traditional and unique “coffee culture” in the Kingdom.  Offering guests coffee is a display of hospitality and generosity which is very much entrenched in the culture so expect to be served Arabic coffee with nearly all your meals.

It is customary for Saudi coffee to be served from a dallah (coffee pot) in a ritualistic manner. The flavour is very distinctive due to the addition of other elements such as cardamom, cloves or saffron.

Travelling Solo In Saudi Arabia

All of our   small group tours   are designed to cater for   solo travellers : the number of solo travellers will vary from tour to tour, but usually over half will be travelling alone. Get all of the excitement of discovering new places combined with the security of travelling with an organised group, with like minded people.

Known as the ultimate forbidden kingdom to most, Saudi Arabia is a destination for the bravest and boldest of travelers. But the petroleum-producing monarchy is slowly lifting the veil to show outsiders the positive side of its country: the stone-carved tombs of Nabataeans, the holy Muslim city of Makkah and the seemingly endless Bedouin hospitality of the locals. Saudi Arabia boasts miles of coastline that several cities call home. Just a skip away from Makkah (or Mecca) lies liberal-minded Jeddah, the second-largest city in Saudi Arabia that sits on the Red Sea. Most travel guides to Saudi Arabia will however recommend Madain Saleh in the north as an absolute must-see, and is often heralded as “The Petra of Saudi Arabia.” The mystery surrounding this middle-eastern nation may be just what drives you towards it, as it has for the most daring expeditioners in history. Nowadays, you don’t have to be searching for adventure to visit Saudi Arabia; it has plenty in the way of attractions to lure visitors looking for a simple vacation.

Tell us your destination, date, and group size.

Our team of travel experts and guides will design a tailored itinerary just for you., enjoy your trip with peace of mind knowing everything is taken care of..

Flying to Jeddah on arrival and departure can be a wise choice as this way, you can organize a tour of Saudi Arabia with entry and exit from different cities, thus saving time and money. Without having to go through Riyadh, the busiest Saudi Arabian city. Also, the connection via Istanbul is relatively straightforward.

Some of our tour Saudi Arabia packages include itineraries that start and end in different cities. For example, our 7-Day Travel to Saudi Arabia starts and ends in Riyadh.

8 days riyadh, edge of the world & jeddah tour.

Without a doubt, the price of tours in Saudi Arabia is justified. Considering the challenges of navigating the country, many travelers prefer the convenience of guided tours in Saudi Arabia. Local tour operators excel at curating complete travel experiences, covering accommodations, dining, transportation, activities, knowledgeable guides, and more. While it is always an option to plan your own trip, in numerous locations, the extra cost of a tour is well worth the assurance and convenience of a pre-arranged itinerary.

Navigating the travel costs of Saudi Arabia often reveals that tours can be a pocket-friendly alternative to independent travel, depending on the tour's specifics such as the destinations, travel style, duration, and other factors. Naturally, every tour and independent trip will be different and have its own cost. Typically, tour providers bundle an array of offerings into an attractively competitive price, often rivalling the expenditure of an independent journey with a similar level of luxury. The average daily expenses for a tour in Saudi Arabia is calculated to be approximately $501, yet numerous tours fall below this price. Prices for tours in Saudi Arabia span from $516 to $18,679. When comparing tour costs against independent trips in Saudi Arabia, it's wise to factor in that most organized guided tours include accommodations, transport, guides, meals, entry tickets, and much more. So, when comparing tour packages with trips planned by yourself, keep in mind the differences because it's not always an equal comparison. To paint an accurate picture of the trip and its costs, make sure you know what is included in the tour package before comparing its price against your own trip plans. Also, diving deep into the costs of independent travel in Saudi Arabia is also necessary to find an accurate comparison.

Group Tours vs. Independent Travel in Saudi Arabia

Travelers often face a tough decision between opting for an organized tour package or planning an independent trip. Traveling in Saudi Arabia during 2024 or 2025 presents an excellent opportunity to take advantage of the wide range of enticing deals and sales available with organized tour packages. These guided tours offer comprehensive packages that include accommodations, transportation, entry tickets, food, and other essential travel amenities, ensuring great value for money. Additionally, knowledgeable guides accompany you throughout the journey, providing valuable insights, and relieving the burden of planning every detail of the trip. Conversely, independent travel provides the advantage of greater flexibility and control over your travel plans, allowing you to adjust your schedule and budget as needed. It also allows for a deeper immersion in local cultures and the exploration of off-the-beaten-path destinations that are often not covered in tour packages.

What are the benefits of a package tour to Saudi Arabia?

Opting for a tour while traveling brings numerous benefits. One of the best parts of a tour is the unmatched convenience of having every aspect of your journey meticulously arranged. With transportation, accommodations, and activities planned out, you can enjoy a stress-free experience, knowing that all the essentials have been taken care of. This eliminates the need to worry about finding suitable accommodations, organizing logistics, or potentially overlooking any key attractions. Furthermore, the majority of tours offer all-inclusive pricing, allowing you to know the exact cost of your trip beforehand. Benefits of a tour include

  • fixed budget
  • reliable service and schedule
  • knowledgeable guides
  • comfortable amenities
  • not having to plan
  • meeting other like-minded travelers
  • eliminating risks

What are the benefits of independent travel in Saudi Arabia?

Freedom, control, and flexibility are the main benefits of independent travel. When you travel independently, you have the freedom to select your own lodging, visit the attractions that appeal to you, dine at your preferred times, and choose your preferred mode of transportation. Making these decisions yourself also gives you greater control over your budget, itinerary, schedule, and the level of luxury you desire while exploring new destinations. Benefits also include

  • flexible schedules
  • flexible budget
  • in-depth cultural opportunities
  • off-the-beaten-path destinations

To secure your tour to Saudi Arabia, it is advisable to plan and book well in advance, preferably a few months or more ahead. While some individuals reserve their tours up to a year ahead, based on our experience, reserving your spot approximately 6 to 9 months prior to departure is usually sufficient. Many popular tours tend to fill up quickly, so booking early guarantees your place on the trip. Additionally, booking early can often lead to significant cost savings, as tour companies frequently offer early booking sales and discounted prices. However, it's important to note that some tour companies may offer last-minute discounts for tours that still have available spots. While this may be tempting, waiting for such discounts carries the risk of missing out on a spot if the tour becomes fully booked.

The number of travelers on tours in Saudi Arabia can vary greatly, with group sizes ranging from 4 to 100 people. On average, a tour consists of 30 participants. However, it is important to note that the quality and price of a tour are not necessarily dependent on the number of people.

To fully experience Saudi Arabia, it is advisable to plan for around 10 days, as this is the typical duration of organized tour packages. Tours in Saudi Arabia can range from 4 to 20 days, or even longer. While longer tours may have a higher upfront cost, they become more economical on a daily basis. Additionally, longer tours provide ample time to visit multiple destinations at a comfortable pace, making them a more rewarding choice.

Where do group tours go in Saudi Arabia?

Tours often pass through Riyadh, Jeddah, Medina, Hail, Buraidah, Abhā, Tabuk, and Al Bahah. These destinations are among the most popular in Saudi Arabia.

What tour and travel companies offer packages to Saudi Arabia?

A wide range of tour companies offer trips to Saudi Arabia. Some companies are large international brands, while others are more regionally or locally based. The benefits and challenges of each company can vary based on its size and level of experience. International companies often have well-established reputations, and tours are rarely canceled due to low turnout. However, they might not have the same local perspectives and insights that you'll find with a smaller, locally based company.

The most popular companies offering tours in Saudi Arabia are GrayLine UAE and Oman , Saudi Group , Agate Travel , Europamundo , and Destination Arabia . Some are larger than others, while some are focused on specific regions or types of trips.

Blinken arrives in Saudi Arabia on first leg of Middle East tour

tours in saudi arabia

Blinken is expected to meet with senior Saudi leaders and hold a wider meeting with counterparts from five Arab states – Qatar, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Jordan

Reuters

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken arrived in Saudi Arabia on Monday, the first stop in a broader trip to the Middle East.

The top US diplomat heads to Israel later this week, where he is expected to meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to take the concrete and tangible steps US President Joe Biden demanded this month to improve the situation in Gaza.

Blinken to meet with Saudi leadership

In Riyadh, Blinken is expected to meet with senior Saudi leaders and hold a wider meeting with counterparts from five Arab states – Qatar, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Jordan, according to a senior State Department official.

Blinken will also discuss with Saudi authorities the efforts for a normalisation deal between the kingdom and Israel, a mega deal that includes Washington giving Riyadh agreements on bilateral defence and security commitments as well as nuclear cooperation.

In return for normalisation, Arab states and Washington have been pushing for Israel to agree to a pathway for Palestinian statehood.

From Riyadh, Blinken will head to Jordan and Israel and the focus of the trip will shift to the efforts to improve the humanitarian situation in Gaza.

In Amman, Blinken will meet with senior Jordanian officials and humanitarian groups to hear about the improvements and what more needs to be done and then take that feedback to the Israelis later this week.

“(Blinken) will discuss the recent increase in humanitarian assistance being delivered to Gaza and underscore the importance of ensuring that increase is sustained,” the US State Department said in a statement on Sunday announcing the expansion of the trip.

The road ahead

Blinken is also expected to bring together Arab countries with the European states and discuss how Europe can help the rebuilding effort of the tiny enclave.

Conversations over Gaza’s rebuilding and governance have been going on for months with a clear mechanism yet to emerge.

Blinken’s trip to the Middle East comes about a month after Biden said Washington’s policy could shift if Israel fails to take steps to address civilian harm, humanitarian suffering, and the safety of aid workers.

In a phone call on Sunday with Netanyahu, Biden mentioned the Israeli preparations to open new border crossings this week into northern Gaza, according to a White House statement.

Kasatkina 'given guarantees' on safety of gay players in Saudi

Daria Kasatkina, one of the few openly gay players on the WTA Tour, says she has been “given guarantees” about her safety should she compete in Saudi Arabia .

The 26-year-old is in contention to qualify for the season-ending WTA Finals, which will be staged in Riyadh for the first time this November.

“I’ve been given guarantees that I’m going to be fine,” the world number 11 told BBC Sport when asked whether gay players should feel comfortable taking part.

When questioned at Wimbledon last year, Kasatkina expressed reservations about the Finals going to Saudi Arabia - saying there were “many issues concerning this country”.

But speaking at the Madrid Open after a third-round victory over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Kasatkina spoke of the benefits of taking the tour’s flagship event to Riyadh on a three-year deal.

“If I qualify, it means that I am top eight in the world - it’s great news for me,” she said.

“We see that the Saudis now are very into the sport, they want to develop the sport. And as long as it gives the opportunity to the people there, and the young kids and the women to actually see the sport - so that they can watch it, they can play it, they can participate in this, I think it’s great.”

Saudi Arabia to host WTA Finals for next three years

'WTA Finals in Saudi Arabia would be step backward'

Human Rights Watch told the BBC in December that Saudi courts had convicted people for promoting homosexuality online and added "LGBT people in Saudi Arabia have to practise extreme self-censorship to survive their daily lives".

In response, Arij Almutabagani - the president of the Saudi Tennis Federation - said gay players would not need to act any differently to the way they do in places like Abu Dhabi and Dubai, where WTA tournaments are already staged.

"People can behave the way they want to - there is nothing that says you can or you cannot behave. You just have to understand that every country has its rules and traditions," she said.

"It's the same thing that has happened in Dubai. How do they act in Dubai? We are the same, we are all neighbours. Saudi Arabia, Qatar , Kuwait, UAE - how would the players behave there?"

WTA chief executive Steve Simon has said representatives of the LGBTQ+ community were included on fact-finding trips to Saudi Arabia, before the deal for the WTA Finals was concluded.

Tunisia ’s world number nine Ons Jabeur has also reiterated her support for the Saudi Finals.

“As an Arab woman, I'm very proud some things are moving there in Saudi,” she said in Madrid.

“Like Princess Reema said: you should come to Saudi, be there, and judge yourself.

“For me, it always has been about chances, and going there not just to play tennis matches but to give the opportunity especially for younger women to see their role models and to believe that they can achieve anything.”

Saudi Arabia: The Complete - Escorted Tour in 3 or 4* Hotels

Very uncomfortable small bus did not have enough room for our 9 guests, 3 translators, guide and driver, even on excursions where we only brought day-bags (rather than entire luggage); uncomfortable seats and NOT ENOUGH LEG ROOM for taller non-local Westerners, worthless torn cloth blinds on the windows that could not be securely open or closed. Each of our 3 translators (who also served as guides for the tour overall) was GREAT! Consistently helpful, capable and personable; very positive attitudes and considerate individuals: 5+ stars for them! Local guides were also consistently great, although there was an ugly scene between our Jeddah(?) guide and our driver, leading to a verbal argument and the guide stomping off the bus.

Tennis Briefing: Kasatkina ‘assurances’ on Saudi Arabia, Alcaraz defies injury

Tennis Briefing: Kasatkina ‘assurances’ on Saudi Arabia, Alcaraz defies injury

Welcome to the Monday Tennis Briefing, where The Athletic  will explain the story behind the stories from the last week on court.

This week, the coveted Masters 1000 in Madrid ran its first week and the stories on court were matched by the drama off it, as t he Grand Slams and tennis tours continue their beauty pageant for the future of the sport .

If you’d like more tennis coverage, please click here .

Can ‘assurances’ on player safety in Saudi Arabia ever be enough?

Daria Kasatkina, the highest ranked openly gay player in women’s tennis, was asked Sunday how she felt about the WTA opting to hold its Tour Finals for the next three years in Saudi Arabia, a country, where homosexuality is a crime that can be punished by death.

Only the top eight players qualify for the Tour Finals. Kasatkina is currently world No 11.

“Look, if I qualify, it means that I’m top eight in the world,” Kasatkina said after advancing to the round of 16 in Madrid. “It’s great news for me.”

tours in saudi arabia

Then she took a deep breath. “We see that the Saudis, now they are very into the sport. They want to develop the sport, and as long as it gives the opportunity to the people there and the young kids and the women, too, you know, we see that sport  and specifically tennis, it’s actually so close so that they can watch it. They can play, they can participate in this, I think it’s great.”

Asked how she thinks the environment would be for gay players and those in same sex relationships as she is, and whether she has received assurances about being able to perhaps, share a room with a partner, Ksatkina once more paused pensively.“I’ve been given assurances that I’m going to be fine,” she said.

Does it matter if Aryna Sabalenka wants to watch men’s tennis?

Sabalenka caused a bit of a stir last week when she told a Spanish media outlet that she doesn’t watch much women’s tennis and prefers the men’s game, saying it was more interesting. That wasn’t the kind of buzz the women’s tour is looking for from its top players.

Sabalenka clarified those comments after winning her first match in Madrid, explaining that sitting down to watch her opponents isn’t how she prefers to spend her free time.

“I play against all of them, and I just want to change the picture, and because I watch lots of women’s tennis before I go to the match, I watch my opponents, I watch lots of women’s tennis,” she said. “It’s not like I don’t like it or I try to offend what I do. I was trying to say that because I’m playing there and it’s too much for me, I’m trying to watch men’s tennis. It’s more fun than watching probably my future opponents in the tournament.”

A perfectly understandable explanation. Tennis, and watching it, is work for the top players in the world, men and women. Baseball players don’t watch much baseball in their free time.

(Full disclosure, this can be true for tennis writers, as well.)

It’s a sensitive topic around the tour, especially because it wasn’t long ago that Amelie Mauresmo, the French Open tournament director and a former world No 1, described men’s tennis as more appealing to justify her decision to let men dominate the tournament’s nightly featured match.

tours in saudi arabia

Women have enough of a problem with men degrading their sport. Fairly or unfairly — probably the latter — that forces them to be extra careful when talking about their favorite versions of the sport. No one gets on Daniil Medvedev or any other male player when they fess up to not watching their sport unless they are in the middle of a tournament.

Listening to women: The slow rise of female tennis coaches

Has an arm injury actually helped Carlos Alcaraz?

Few things worry the tennis world more than the health and wellbeing of Carlos Alcaraz. His magical play and dynamic style have captivated tennis fans and the rest of the sports-consuming public. He is one of those players who comes along not so often and transcends the game, providing an opportunity for tennis to break through the morass.

He also gets hurt a lot, and has missed some medium-sized chunks of his early seasons as a professional that have cost him a chance to play in important tournaments — the ATP Tour Finals in 2022 and the Australian Open in 2023 top that list.

go-deeper

Carlos Alcaraz is making magic again. Watch out.

So it was a little alarming when Alcaraz pulled out of Monte Carlo and Barcelona this month with an injury to his forearm. Competing in Madrid was touch-and-go until his final practice the day before his first match, which he played wearing a sleeve. His performance, a near-flawless 6-2, 6-1 win over Alexander Shevchenko of Kazakhstan, eased a lot of worries, but it also showcased another side of Alcaraz, who said he never went for broke on his cannon forehand to protect his arm.

“I hit it softer than I used to, but it helped me stay relaxed,” he said. “I think more.”

The data (below) shows that Alcaraz is hitting it softer (a three-mile-per-hour difference might not seem like much, but over 78 feet, it’s a lot) and with “less quality,” but he’s still winning.

Far be it for anyone to criticize the play of a two-time Grand Slam champion at 20 years old, but if there has been a weak spot for Alcaraz, it’s his tendency to sometimes play shots rather than points — especially when under pressure — and put together a highlight reel rather than simply win by playing solid, unspectacular tennis. If there is a silver lining to this latest injury, it could be that it forces Alcaraz to become a more restrained but more effective player, still with plenty of highlights to boot.

Two bagels for you Coco, you go Coco!

Coco Gauff has done many impressive things in her tennis career, but the so-called ‘double-bagels’ are generally not her thing. She’s come close before, most recently last year in the WTA Finals against a hobbled Ons Jabeur. With Gauff, though, there’s usually a time in every match when the forehand gets wobbly or the serve goes on the skids.

Then came Madrid, and an opening-round match against Arantxa Rus of the Netherlands. Fifty-one minutes and a 51-18 point differential later, and Gauff had her first double-bagel. In her second match, against Dayana Yastremska, Gauff sprinted to a 4-0 lead and looked like she might get three in a row, but settled for a 6-4, 6-1. Breadsticks are good fuel, too.

tours in saudi arabia

Gauff is as good an athlete as there is in the game and can play all night if she needs to, but every player likes to be as clinical as she can be wherever possible. If Gauff can figure out how to do that, especially in the early rounds of tournaments, the rest of the field better watch out.

Is the Billie Jean King Cup and Davis Cup crossover a good idea?

Legend of the sport Billie Jean King has long wanted a “Tennis World Cup ” — and now she’s got it… sort of.

The International Tennis Federation (ITF) this week announced changes to the schedule and format of the annual event, creating a week of cross-over between the BJK Cup and the men’s equivalent, the Davis Cup, with the second semi-final and final of the women’s tournament overlapping the first two days of the men’s tournament in late November this year.

The women’s tournament has also moved to emulate the knock-out structure of its counterpart, replacing a round-robin finals with a straight shoot-out between eight of the final twelve teams. The four seeded nations — who, on current form, would be the Czech Republic and Australia, alongside 2023 winners and runners-up Canada and Italy — will receive a bye straight to the quarter-finals.

Rune and Navone have Madrid on strings

If Medvedev’s destiny is in his strings , then Holger Rune’s might be missing a weave.

During his unnecessarily up-and-down victory over rising Argentinian Mariano Navone, he came over to the umpire at 5-3 in his favor (although, a few minutes previously, it was 5-1).

“The tournament is trying to cheat me,” he said. “They missed a string on my racket.” He then pushed away a camera before repeating his complaint. It looked more like a cross-string had been mis-weaved, rather than missing an entire line.

Rune had been 5-6, 15-30 down on Navone’s serve in the second set, on the verge of exiting the tournament, before Navone tightened up to hit two yomping double faults and a backhand error that barely landed in the tramlines to give up a tiebreak. Rune surged away with it, and the next six games to go 5-1, but the racket incident destabilised him completely and he ended up needing five match points before prevailing 6-4 in a final service game that swung like a pendulum.

Stringing Navone along, perhaps.

Alexander Bublik will do Alexander Bublik things whenever he wants. Roberto Carballes Baena isn’t a fan.

Lo que hace aquí Carballes Baena 🇪🇸 es para que le metan una buena sanción y no pueda pisar un torneo un buen tiempo. LGBT Players ‘Given Guarantees’ On Safety Of Playing In Saudi Arabia

' src=

Any gay player who travels to compete in Saudi Arabia will be safe to play, according to the WTA Tour’s highest-ranked openly LGBT player.

Daria Kasatkina has told BBC Sport that she has been given ‘assurances’ that those who identify as LGBT will not face any problems. Saudi Arabia has been accused of sportswashing amid concerns about their human rights record. Those in the country argue that improvements have been made, especially concerning women’s rights. However, it is more complicated when it comes to the topic of homosexuality.

Same-sex relationships are not codified under Saudi law. However, they draw their legal framework from Sharia (Islamic law) which forbids homosexuality. The British Foreign Office says legal action against LGBT travellers is ‘ uncommon ‘ but same-sex couples are advised to ‘ be aware of local customs and avoid showing affection in public. ” There is no independent data or records regarding the levels of prosecution of those who are LGBT and living in Saudi Arabia.

“I’ve been given guarantees that I’m going to be fine, ” said Kasatkina.

The topic of gay rights in Saudi Arabia and tennis comes ahead of the WTA Finals being held in the country for the first time. Only the top eight players will secure a place in the tournament. Currently, Kasatkina is in 11th place but is just over 200 points outside of the eighth spot.

“If I qualify, it means that I am top eight in the world – it’s great news for me, ” she said. “We see that the Saudis now are very into the sport, they want to develop the sport. And as long as it gives the opportunity to the people there, and the young kids and the women to actually see the sport – so that they can watch it, they can play it, they can participate in this, I think it’s great.”

Kadatkina is not the only openly gay player to have such views when it comes to tennis in Saudi Arabia. Last year Belgium’s  Greet Minnen told Ubitennis  she was confident that the WTA will ensure that there is a safe environment for LGBT players.

“All the LGBT+ players are wise enough to not provoke anything or hold hands when we are not at the (tennis) club, ” she said. “I think we have to respect the culture there but it’s not going to be an issue as the WTA will make sure it is a safe environment for us. “If Saudi Arabia is willing to put more tournaments on the calendar, I think it is very good.”

Whilst there are a series of out-payers currently playing on the women’s Tour, there is currently none in the men’s game.

The WTA Finals in Saudi Arabia will take place later this year in November.

In the last match of the day the No. 5 in the world comfortably seals a 64 75  win and reaches the round of 16 in the Mutua Madrid Open for his seventh time

The Madrid nocturne was poised for entertaining drama when Alexander Zverev and Denis Shapovalov stepped on court at 11 pm. The German looking to emulate his past glorious runs in Madrid, where his name is engraved in the history book as a two-time winner.

And Shapovalov, in his strenuous attempt to retrieve his pre-injury tennis and ranking standards. Let’s not forget he was a Wimbledon semi-finalist in 2021 and a top 10. And let’s not forget aesthetics, the 25-year-old being one of those players endowed with a unique, inimitably stylish leftie game.

Yet the match fell somewhat short of expectations. Too many unforced errors oozing from the Canadian, who was perpetually struggling to hold serve and just as perpetually was unable to pose a threat to Zverev’s, but for a little help in the final stages.

Yes, there were applause-ripping points, plenty enough for editing pleasing highlights, but the match was a lop-sided one, far more than is told by the score.

Shapovalov was already struggling to hold serve in the third game, when he faced two break points.

In game 5 two double faults resulted in two further break points. However, Shapovalov, mixing up power and delicacy, alias first services and dropshots. managed to emerge from trouble.

To sum up, the first 6 games had gone with serve, though Zverev had denied access, whereas Shapovalov had  had to save four break points.

Zverev earned three break points in the seventh, after scything an extraordinary backhand volley on the stretch. And this time Shapovalov did not succeed in bouncing back.

A higher first serve percentage – 72%, including 7 aces – and more effective returning granted Zverev the first set.  As well as a predominance in the scarce longer rallies.

Often does the wind change direction at the start of a second set, but Shapovalov insisted on overly indulging in dropshots, resulting in predictability, and lost his service in the first game.

When he faced a break point in the fifth game, after leading 40 15, it seemed as if he was about to throw in the towel. Instead he threw in a backhand passing shot, nimbly flicked with his wrist, and held on.

Back on serve – just a few minutes later, so rapidly did Zverev’s service games whizz past – he saved 5 more break  points with flashes of talent, forays to the net, winning forehands  from all positions.

The match seemed to be edging towards the closing credits, when Zverev was serving for the match at 54.  But never write off panache in tennis. After an overall erratic performance, Shapovalov netted a forehand passing shot, which would have earned him a break point and an assumedly last chance. In turn Zverev netted a match point, suddenly tightened up and ended up dropping his serve, when Shapovalov won a humanly inexplicable rollercoaster point ultimately scooping up a ball from under the net and steering it past his opponent.

Could the plot take a different twist?

Shapovalov, who had seemed fired up after grabbing the break, abruptly deflated and disappointed expectations by losing his service to love.

Serving a second time for the match, Zverev faltered once more and faced his second break point in the match, which would have meant tie break and a leap into the unknown.

His most formidable weapon, his serve, picked up again and just in time. Three thundering first serves ushered him into the round of 16, where he will be facing Francisco Cerundolo, a resilient winner of Tommy Paul in three sets.

Monday features the conclusion of third round ATP singles action, as well as all eight round of 16 WTA singles matches.

On Saturday, Rafael Nadal electrified the Madrid crowd with the best tennis we’ve seen from him in well over a year, as he defeated Alex de Minaur in straight sets.  Now he tries to win three consecutive matches for the first time since the 2022 US Open, against Argentina’s Pedro Cachin .

Other ATP action on Monday includes top-seeded Jannik Sinner , third-seeded Daniil Medvedev , and recent Barcelona champion Casper Ruud .

Plus, all eight fourth round WTA singles matches will be staged, and they feature eight of the top 10 seeds.  Two-time Madrid champ Aryna Sabalenka takes on the WTA’s hottest player Danielle Collins , who is currently on a 15-match win streak.  In addition, top-seeded Iga Swiatek , third-seeded Coco Gauff , and recent Stuttgart champ Elena Rybakina will all play on Monday.

Each day, this preview will analyze the two most intriguing matchups, while highlighting other notable matches on the schedule.  Monday’s play gets underway at 11:00am local time.

Rafael Nadal (PR) vs. Pedro Cachin – Not Before 4:00pm on Manolo Santana Stadium

Was Nadal’s improved level on Saturday a one-off, or can he sustain it on Monday?  This will be just his eighth match of the past 15 months, but he brought back glimpses of the Rafa of yesteryear against Alex de Minaur in the last round, avenging a loss to the same player from the week prior.  In his 17 appearances in Madrid, Nadal has only twice failed to reach the fourth round.

Cachin was ranked inside the top 50 last summer, after winning a clay court title in Gstaad, his first-ever ATP crown.  But between last October and this month, the 29-year-old went on a 15-match losing streak at all levels.  His victories this past week over Sebastian Ofner and Frances Tiafoe are his first at tour level in nearly nine months.

In their first career meeting, Pedro will certainly feel a bit overwhelmed facing Rafa, especially in front of a raucous crowd in Madrid.  I like Nadal’s chances of extending his winning streak on Monday.

Danielle Collins (13) vs. Aryna Sabalenka (2) – Last on Manolo Santana Stadium

Collins has not lost a match since she faced World No.1 Iga Swiatek in Indian Wells.  Danielle won titles in both Miami and Charleston, which included nine victories over top 30 opposition.  And this past week in Madrid, she’s survived two dramatic three-setters.

Sabalenka is 17-5 on the year, and is 14-3 lifetime in Madrid, though she’s also overcome two three-setters to this stage.  Aryna has understandably not played her best since the shocking death of her ex-boyfriend last month.  After her first 11 victories of 2024 came in straight sets, her last five matches have now all gone the distance.

Their history has been rather one-sided, as Sabalenka is 4-0 against Collins.  That includes three wins at the US Open, and one in Wuhan back in 2019.  In their first encounter on clay, I favor Aryna, especially at this event where she’s enjoyed so much success.  Plus, Danielle must be rather drained after playing so much tennis across the past six weeks.

Other Notable Matches on Monday:

Jelena Ostapenko (9) vs. Ons Jabeur (8) – This should be a fascinating encounter between two of the sport’s most streaky and unpredictable talents.  They have split four previous meetings at all levels, though Ostapenko has been the much better performer this season, with a record of 19-7, compared to just 5-7 for Jabeur.

Beatriz Haddad Maia (11) vs. Maria Sakkari (5) – Sakkari has already earned two solid straight-set victories over Donna Vekic and Sloane Stephens, while Haddad Maia defeated both Sara Errani and Emma Navarro in straights.  Beatriz is 3-0 against Maria at all levels.

Iga Swiatek (1) vs. Sara Sorribes Tormo – As per usual, Swiatek has dropped only seven games through four sets thus far.  But Sorribes Tormo is also yet to drop a set, and has already upset both Elina Svitolina and Victoria Azarenka.  Iga has beaten Sara three times within the past year, all in straight sets.

Daniil Medvedev (3) vs. Sebastian Korda (25) – Their head-to-head stands at 2-a-piece, though Medvedev defeated Korda most recently, which took place just a month ago in Indian Wells.  This is their first meeting on clay.

Coco Gauff (3) vs. Madison Keys (18) – Gauff has lost only five games through four sets, while Keys defeated the 15 th seed, Liudmila Samsonova, in the last round.  Their head-to-head also stands at 2-2, though they also have never played on this surface.

Sara Bejlek (Q) vs. Elena Rybakina (4) – Rybakina is now 28-4 on the season, and is on a six-match win streak.  Bejlek is an 18-year-old qualifier from the Czech Republic who won 42 matches last year at all levels.

Cameron Norrie (29) vs. Casper Ruud (5) – Ruud leads the ATP with 30 match wins in 2024, and is 12-2 on clay.  Norrie is a modest 13-8 this year, and is 1-3 lifetime against Casper, but Cam’s one win came just a few months ago at the Australian Open.

Jannik Sinner (1) vs. Pavel Kotov – Sinner is now 26-2 this year, and thumped his fellow countryman Lorenzo Sonego in the second round by a score of 6-0, 6-3.  Kotov upset the 32 nd seed Jordan Thompson on Saturday.

Andrey Rublev says two decisions made by the umpire during his third round match at the Madrid Open were ‘wrong’ with the points going against him.

The world No.8 clashed with official Adel Nour during his 7-6(10), 6-3, win over Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. It began seven games into the match when a shot from the Spaniard was called out which prompted him to immediately challenge. Then after some confusion, the umpire stated that the shot was in but decided to award the point to Fokina instead of replaying it. A decision that prompted an angry response from Rublev who demanded a replay but officials were unable to do so.

In the second set, a similar situation occurred when a Rublev return was initially called out before the umpire ruled it in. However, the official decided to issue a replay instead of giving the Russian the point.

“I mean I felt it was wrong because in the first set was exactly the same situation and I told the referee, I agree that yes I couldn’t make it, I hit it out,”  The Express quoted Rublev as saying afterwards. “But the referee called out earlier than I hit [it]. And then second set, the same situation but the referee called it also later than Alejandro hit and the referee told me no, but he was in the position that he could make it. And I say yes but he was trying to make it and he missed it and then it was out.” “Exactly the same two situations and both of them in my situation, he gave the point to Alejandro and in Alejandro’s situation, we replayed the point.”

Controversy aside, Rublev has now won back-to-back matches in the Tour for the first time since February when he was disqualified from the Dubai Tennis Championships for unsportsmanlike conduct. After that incident, he launched a successful appeal to the ATP who ruled the penalty as ‘disproportionate’ and returned his rankings points and prize money. However, a fine of nearly $30,000 was upheld.

Rublev currently has a win-loss record of 17-8 so far this season. In Madrid, he will play Tallon Griekspoor in the fourth round.

Blinken to travel to Israel & Jordan from Saudi Arabia amid renewed Gaza ceasefire talks

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s tour of the Middle East coincides with the arrival of a Hamas delegation in Egypt with a response to the latest ceasefire proposal read more

Blinken to travel to Israel & Jordan from Saudi Arabia amid renewed Gaza ceasefire talks

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken will travel to Jordan and Israel from Saudi Arabia as talks for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip pick up pace.

Blinken will arrive in Saudi Arabia on Monday where he will hold discussions for a deal aimed at establishing a ceasefire in Gaza and freeing hostages in the captivity of Hamas. He will hold discussions with top Arab officials on the sidelines of a World Economic Conference (WEF) being held in the country.

Blinken’s tour of the Middle East coincides with the arrival of a Hamas delegation in Egypt with a response to the latest ceasefire proposal presented to the group.

Blinken’s visit extended after Biden-Netanyahu call

The new stops of Israel and Jordan were added to Blinken’s visit after US President Joe Biden talked to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on phone on Sunday, according to AFP .

As Blinken’s plane refuelled in Ireland, a Department of State official confirmed to the news agency that Blinken will travel to these two countries from Saudi Arabia.

In their call, Biden and Netanyahu discussed the ongoing efforts to secure the release of hostages held by Hamas and the expected invasion of Rafah, the southern Gazan town where more than 1 million Palestinians displaced from the war are sheltering and where Israel says multiple Hamas battalions are also making their last stand.

Previously, State Department Spokesperson Mathew Miller had said that Blinken during his visit will emphasise that it is Hamas that is roadblocking a ceasefire in Gaza as it is not budging on negotiations.

Separately, French Foreign Minister Stéphane Séjourné is also headed to Riyadh. He is travelling to Saudi Arabia from Lebanon where he held talks aimed to ease the tensions between Israel and Lebanon-based Hezbollah, which has clashed with Israel on a nearly-daily basis since the beginning of the Israel-Hamas War in October 2023.

No major issues in ceasefire proposal: Hamas

Ahead of the arrival of its delegation in Egypt with a response to the ceasefire proposal, Hamas on Sunday said it had no “major issues” with it, according to AFP .

“The atmosphere is positive unless there are new Israeli obstacles. There are no major issues in the observations and inquiries submitted by Hamas regarding the contents [of the proposal],” said a Hamas official to the news agency, on the condition of anonymity.

The United States along with regional partners Qatar and Egypt have been facilitating negotiations between Israel and Hamas for a deal that would institute a truce in Gaza and free hostages. While the talks were stalled for weeks, there have been reports that negotiations have picked pace lately. Axios has reported that, for the first time in the talks so far, the latest ceasefire proposal has included Israel’s willingness to discuss the end of the war in Gaza.
