Jeff Stelling: ‘Every week I was fighting a battle and it was making me ill’
Football broadcaster reflects on ending his Soccer Saturday career, his relationship with Chris Kamara and diversity in football
‘O h, it’s crazy,” Jeff Stelling says wryly as he ticks off the list of towns he is visiting on tour, like a 68-year-old football broadcaster turned rock star. “I’ve been plodding my way from Southampton to Southend,” and then on to Croydon before, “[this] week it’s Truro, Yeovil and Christchurch. It goes on and on but, while I wouldn’t say it was rough round the edges, it will get better as the weeks pass. At least, that’s the hope.”
At every venue, including the Scarborough Spa and the Winding Well Theatre in Chesterfield a few weeks from now, wags in the audience will punctuate An Evening with Jeff Stelling by yelling out a favourite catchphrase. “On the opening night in Southampton,” Stelling says, “it happened half a dozen times, en route to the theatre and within the theatre as well. Everybody shouts ‘Unbelievable Jeff!’ as if they’re the first to have said it.”
Stelling emits a sighing laugh full of warmth for his great friend Chris Kamara, who would holler “Unbelievable Jeff!” when reporting on a goal he had just seen, or a red card he had missed, during the many years they worked together on the once inimitable, but now muted, Sky Sports programme Soccer Saturday. Stelling hosted the bizarre, but beloved, show for 25 years as he barked out scores from the English and Scottish leagues while four former footballers watched games on silent monitors. Reporters, like Kamara, would turn away from matches they were covering to offer live snippets from lower league grounds.
Stelling, a master broadcaster , held everything together with a deft touch as the jokes and wordplay flowed alongside the scores and stats. But the last few years, away from the cameras, had become acrimonious. Last May , Stelling hosted his final show and slipped away to a different life.
He is now able to launch this tour and host a new podcast , which began with Kamara as the opening guest and continues this week when Stelling meets James Milner. Stelling talks in detail about the podcast, Football’s Greatest, and he is moving when reflecting on Kamara’s increasingly successful struggle to overcome his apraxia of speech disorder .
But it feels important to start with Stelling’s difficult last few years at Sky. “I had the most fantastic run on the show,” he says. “I made the greatest mates and was paid well for one of the best jobs in the world. But the show was heading in a direction which meant it wasn’t quite the same. Even though I’d been there a long time, I felt some of my views weren’t considered at all. Every week I was fighting a battle. I got tired of fighting and it was making me ill.”
It’s jolting to imagine the avuncular and serene Stelling being made to feel ill by a staple of the football landscape in Soccer Saturday. But I hear the emotion and care with which he picks his words. “Eventually, I went to Sky’s management and said: ‘This is making me unwell. I’ve got to step away from it.’”
I interviewed Stelling in 2020 when he was reeling from the sacking of his close friends Phil Thompson, Matt Le Tissier and Charlie Nicholas from Soccer Saturday. Sky was intent on increasing diversity among its broadcasters and pundits. There have been further cuts and, at the end of last season, the venerable commentator Martin Tyler and Geoff Shreeves, who did most major post-match interviews on Sky, were eased out. Stelling understands the need to encourage diversity but was his distress accentuated by the fact so many of these men were his friends?
“They were,” he agrees. “But it was more because I’d become unclear [about Sky’s direction] before Shreevesy or Martin left. Soccer Saturday used to be distinctive and we had a great team of reporters who would do off-the-wall features.
“But it reached the point where I would go home Saturday [after the show] and never go out with my wife or family because I was so worn out. Sunday, I felt ill with the stress and that extended into Monday and I’d start work on the next show on Tuesday still feeling stressed out. All the time you were flat on the floorboards just to keep the show afloat.”
Stelling pauses. “I’m almost ashamed to say it because my dad worked in a steelworks and would come back from his shift covered in grime and muck and absolutely exhausted. He would never have allowed me to say I was shattered after a TV show. But I felt it was making me ill so I had to step away.”
The preceding years, for Stelling, were “an absolute joy. We all loved working on the show – from me and the panel to the producer and backroom staff. We were a real team.”
Stelling was the linchpin and Sky wanted to retain him. “I wasn’t constantly at management’s door but one or two big decisions were made, and I can’t say what they were, and I wasn’t even consulted. That’s their right but I felt I’d been there so long that maybe I’d earned the right to be asked. It annoyed me and there were two occasions where they almost diametrically opposed my views. I was disregarded and the joy was sucked out of it.
“Now I’ve got a life where I make my own decisions or the company, TalkSport, ask: ‘Is there anything you want on the show? Any guests you want?’ What a joy to be treated like this. I don’t want to be anti-Sky, though. Sky were wonderful to me and there’re still some great people there, in management as well.”
Stelling and Ally McCoist make a winning combination on TalkSport’s breakfast show on Mondays and Tuesdays and he loves radio. He also made a return to the screen when hosting Amazon Prime’s frenetic Every Goal, Every Game. Stelling listens when I read out Barney Ronay’s description of it as “the most painful, jarring and genuinely exhausting football programme ever devised … without context … there is no narrative here, just noise.”
“I get that,” Stelling says. “I totally take that on board because there’d be a goal and a shout but no specific person had been watching that game to give it real context. From Amazon Prime’s point of view it was a toe in the water and, if they did it regularly, the issues would soon be ironed out. They approach things incredibly professionally and I really enjoyed doing a second programme for them which was a live game: Chelsea–Crystal Palace. I enjoyed being back in the thick of it.”
Stelling’s latest passion is his podcast and he and Kamara are typically engaging in the first episode . They discuss great partnerships, knockabout memories of working together and how Kamara’s apraxia of speech affected him so profoundly. Kamara tells Stelling how it became “heartbreaking” to appear on Soccer Saturday because he was too afraid to tell anyone he was battling to string words together.
When did Stelling first suspect Kamara had a then unknown ailment? “There wasn’t a specific moment but Kammy is such a vibrant character and his joie de vivre was draining away. His speech was badly affected but it was heartbreaking that social media was full of people saying: ‘Has Kammy been at the drink?’
“Dementia caused by heading a football was my first concern. When Kammy finally said it was something totally different I was almost relieved. But relief was tempered for Kammy because in this country there was no cure. He was told it’s only going to get worse. It became a living hell for him.”
after newsletter promotion
Did Stelling talk to Kamara before his diagnosis? “I didn’t as I wasn’t sure if he was aware of how much he had deteriorated. Rightly or wrongly, I didn’t want to be the one to point that out to him.”
Happily, after treatment in Mexico, Kamara has made remarkable progress and he talks fluently on the podcast. He will soon return to Mexico in the hope that the pace of his speech will also be enhanced. Stelling and Kamara made a television programme last year in Sri Lanka which centred on their conversations while driving along some of the world’s most dangerous roads.
“There was no prospect of doing that a year earlier,” Stelling says, “and so it was a joy we could talk day after day.”
Stelling was amused that, while waiting for their flight from Heathrow, “a middle-aged lady raced over. She said: ‘Kammy, Kammy can I have your photograph?’ Kammy obliged. She spotted me and said: ‘Oh! You’re the other one!’ Then, on the way back, most of the customs officers recognised us: ‘Hi Kammy, hi Jeff.’ At the end of the customs hall a female officer looked at us and asked: ‘Who are they? The male customs officer said: ‘That’s Chris Kamara … and the other one.’ I’m very happy to take that role with Kammy.”
His laughter is genuine but it will be intriguing to hear Stelling talk to Milner in the second episode of the podcast because they had not met before. He enthuses about Milner’s wit and insights into life as a Premier League footballer, aged 38, and Stelling reveals that Arsène Wenger would be his fantasy guest.
Stelling’s podcast will certainly be free of the bile and prejudice Joey Barton spewed out recently. In his depressing attacks on women in football, the suspicion grew that Barton was also trying to publicise his own podcast.
Has Stelling followed the Barton furore? “Oh, yes. You can’t avoid it, can you? I’ve worked with Joey a couple of times and I enjoyed his company then.
“But you’ve absolutely nailed it. Initially, I’m sure this was to gain some traction for the podcast. Unfortunately it’s become a monster and totally wrong to say women have no right to talk about football.”
Stelling’s disbelief is plain but he remembers how, when he was a boy, his sister Sue, who was six years older than him, took him to watch his beloved Hartlepool. “She would honestly be the only woman in the ground. There were no toilet facilities for women and it was very foreboding and unwelcoming.”
Did the men make comments about Sue? “Oh yeah! And they weren’t as mild as that. It was a totally sexist environment. To see a woman at football was a shock and they didn’t understand she was just my big sister doing me a massive favour in taking me to the game. I’m so glad that’s changed because you now see so many women and families at football matches.”
It’s fitting that Stelling asked Bianca Westwood, his former Sky colleague, to host his evenings on tour and he praises the depth of her knowledge and professionalism. “Fifty years ago, a woman wouldn’t have had an opinion on football because most had never been to a live game because it was such a forbidding, alien atmosphere. But times have changed, thank God.”
Stelling remains exemplary and, in terms of future television work away from Sky, he says: “If anyone offered me a chance to host something I would say: ‘Thanks very much. Yes, please.’ But there are young, thrusting presenters coming through and, if they don’t come to me, I’ve had a great run. Everything is a bonus these days.”

SAN FRANCISCO, May 12, 2023 --( BUSINESS WIRE )--Soccer Champions Tour today announced the launch and schedule for a new series of games featuring six of the world’s most iconic soccer clubs to be played this summer in major markets across the United States. Spain’s Real Madrid and FC Barcelona, Italy’s Juventus Football Club and AC Milan, and England’s Arsenal and Manchester United will compete in eight matches between Saturday, July 22, and Wednesday, August 2, 2023.
The 2023 Soccer Champions Tour is the first time these six clubs, which hold among them 31 European trophies, have participated together in a U.S. series. The eight fixtures will take place in host market stadiums in Dallas, Houston, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Orlando, and San Francisco.
Highlights of the 2023 Soccer Champions Tour include Spanish giants Real Madrid and FC Barcelona meeting in Texas for the first time ever at AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys; Manchester United and Real Madrid facing off for the first time since 2018; FC Barcelona and Arsenal competing in a rematch of the 2006 European final; and Italian rivals AC Milan and Juventus playing each other in California for the first time in their more than 120-year histories.
Soccer Champions Tour was created by a newly formed company of global investment firm Sixth Street to support the continued global growth of top-tier sports franchises by organizing high-profile, competitive events for the millions of fans that live outside the domestic markets of the biggest clubs.
"We are proud to be partnering with the world’s most storied clubs, which have the world’s strongest and most passionate supporters, to provide this rare opportunity for American fans to experience the game at the highest level," said Alan Waxman, Co-Founder and CEO at Sixth Street. "While this year’s tour consists of men’s clubs, we look forward to expanding next summer to bring the world’s best women’s clubs to local audiences around the globe, and in the future to evolve this series into a format with real games of consequence."
In addition to men’s and women’s professional club matches, the tour also intends to organize elite youth academy competitions in the years to come.
Soccer Champions Tour is working closely with global premium experiences company Legends to bring these marquee matchups and elevated in-game experiences to local fans of the game.
Added Shervin Mirhashemi , CEO, Legends: "Legends is proud to bring fans of the beautiful game this unforgettable experience this summer and deliver a fan experience that will match the world-class soccer on the pitch. We can’t wait to see stadiums filled across the United States with fans cheering on some of the best clubs in the world as they compete in the Soccer Champions Tour."
The 2023 Soccer Champions Tour is being produced in partnership with AEG, the world's leading sports and live entertainment company.
"AEG is excited about the partnership with Soccer Champions Tour and Legends to bring the most successful soccer clubs in the world to fans across the U.S.," said Tom Braun, Sr. Vice President, Soccer & Business Operations and Business Development at AEG. How to get tickets to Man United vs Liverpool in South Carolina
by Kyle Fansler April 18, 2024
Tickets to this summer’s friendly between Manchester United and Liverpool in Columbia, South Carolina, sold out within three hours of going on sale. That is particularly impressive given that Williams-Brice Stadium, the hosting venue for this game, has a capacity of over 77,000. More noteworthy, tickets are now available on the secondary market.
There are ways to attend the game scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 3 at 7:30 p.m. ET. Vivid Seats is one way to get your hands on Manchester United vs Liverpool tickets . Also, World Soccer Talk readers can use a discount on their first purchase to save $20.
Buy tickets to Manchester United against Liverpool in South Carolina
- Visit Vivid Seats to look at tickets to the friendly.
- Select your tickets for the Manchester United-Liverpool contest.
- Continue to checkout and input your information to receive tickets.
- On the right-hand side of your screen in the payment section, click the ‘Promo Code’ drop-down. Enter SOCCER20 to receive your discount.
If this venue seems unfamiliar to soccer fans, that’s because Williams-Brice Stadium has never hosted a soccer game of this stature. Traditionally the home of the University of South Carolina Gamecocks football team, the Southeastern Conference school has developed a tremendous atmosphere. Charlotte, NC, which is just an hour and a half, has hosted friendlies before. Liverpool has played in Charlotte, NC, twice. Now, both red clubs are making their debuts in South Carolina.
Busy set of summer friendlies for both clubs
While tickets sold out fast for the friendly in South Carolina, both Manchester United and Liverpool have other games that fans can also attend. As part of the schedule of summer friendlies in the United States , Manchester United is playing across the country. Meanwhile, Liverpool has a slew of games on the east coast.
For Manchester United, the side starts its American tour in Inglewood, CA. Manchester United faces Premier League rival Arsenal in the Los Angeles area on July 27. The second friendly the club is playing is at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego, CA, four days later. United is facing Real Betis of LaLiga at one of the newer venues in the United States. Finally, United comes east to South Carolina to close with this Liverpool friendly.
Liverpool is playing the same two opponents in its three-game schedule this summer . On July 26, Liverpool faces Real Betis in Pittsburgh at Acrisure Stadium. Five days later, Philadelphia hosts a friendly between Liverpool and Arsenal before the Manchester United game.
The three hours it took Liverpool vs Man Utd tickets to sell out is record-breaking for the stadium on the campus of the University of South Carolina. For example, Beyonce and Jay-Z had a concert there in 2018. Manchester United-Liverpool sold out faster than their concert. These two icons of English soccer are always going to draw a crowd, but this level of interest is still surprising.

A group of lads ended up on a night out in a random UK town after taking part in a Soccer Saturday drinking game, having let fate decide where they’d be going – with surprisingly hilarious results. You can see how their night went here:
Jack Osborne ( @jackrustyspoon1246 ), 23, was watching football with pals Matthew Perry, Jordan Holliday and Jack Holland in the pub last Saturday (20 August) when they came up with a novel way to choose what to do with their night.
They decided that the location of whichever team scored the first goal in the 3.00pm kick-off matches among all English football leagues would be their destination – only for fate to direct them to a market town more than two hours away in the car.
Osborne, from Faversham in Kent, shared a video on TikTok documenting their adventure, captioning the post: “Big up Swinny.”
That's right, the lads were on their way to none other than Swindon, Wiltshire, which isn’t exactly known for its raging nightlife scene.
In a comment, Osborne explained that the game revolved around the ‘first team out of all four English football leagues to score in the 3pm KO’, excluding London teams, which dictated where you head on a night out.
Their mate Kieran Beal, who had to join in virtually via FaceTime as he had Covid, can be heard saying in the clip: “What a shocking night out that’s going to be.”
But the lads jumped in the car and hit Swindon’s town centre – surprised to find that they ended up having a ‘great’ time.
Speaking to LADbible, Osborne explained: “Me and my mates decided that the first goal in 3pm kick offs in the whole English football leagues would decide where we go for a night out.
“We pre packed the car with change of clothes each and booked the hotel en route when we knew the location.
“Unfortunately, Swindon scored first, which is not known for a decent night out or very luxurious place. But that is all part of the fun – and the fact you can get somewhere good or bad is what has made people interested in the idea.”
He added: “We also do a fantasy footy league and my mate lost and had to wear a leopard print vest for most the day/night, and also added in some drinking games for added fun.
“We had a great night out and it just shows it’s more who you go out with than where.”
Osborne said he and his friends are hoping to do the same again as part of a series, with plans to rate each of the nights out.
Many other TikTokers enjoyed watching the drama unfold, with one commenting: “Class this.”
Another said: “First group of lads ever to go for a night out in Swindon who don't live there.”
A third added: “You have a great group of mates if you can make a night out in Swindon look half decent.”
When someone asked how long you're supposed to wait after the first goal before hitting the road, Osborne replied: “Straight away!!! Well finish your pint first.”
He also advised speaking to locals to get a good idea of where to go, having been told to head to Swindon’s Old Town for what ended up being a cracking night out.

Messi to smash records with 70,000 expected in Kansas City
I nter Miami and Lionel Messi are going to attract record crowds when they face Sporting Kansas City on Saturday, April 13. The noteworthy aspect of this game is that Sporting KC is hosting this game away from Children’s Mercy Park, its usual venue. Based on the demand Lionel Messi brings in for tickets, Children’s Mercy Park would be unable to hold all those who want to see the Argentine. As a result, Arrowhead Stadium, the home of the NFL’s Kansas City Chiefs, is hosting this game.
It will be the first time since 2007 that Sporting Kansas City will play at a larger venue in a competitive game. Sporting KC has played at the stadium since then, but that was just a friendly in 2010. The Kansas City Wizards played Manchester United in front of 52,342 spectators. That holds the record for the biggest soccer crowd in the history of Missouri. That record will fall on Saturday when Sporting Kansas City expects over 70,000 people when Lionel Messi comes to town.
Inter Miami has had no issue bringing fans to stadiums, whether that be at home or away. Charlotte FC, which averaged 36,337 fans last season, pulled in almost double that when Lionel Messi and Inter Miami visited to close the 2023 Major League Soccer regular season. Likewise, Atlanta United, which also plays in an NFL stadium, pulled in its biggest audience of the season when 71,635 people showed up at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Sporting Kansas City is going to join that pack when Arrowhead Stadium hosts the Florida club on Saturday evening.
There would be no issue in filling Children’s Mercy Park, something Sporting KC has only done once this season, which was in the season-opening game. However, the opportunity Messi provides means the potential for more revenue.
For those not attending Arrowhead Stadium, coverage of the game is available exclusively on MLS Season Pass . Kickoff is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. ET (7:30 p.m. local time) at Arrowhead.
Inter Miami and Messi give Kansas City Copa America, World Cup tune-up
Arrowhead Stadium hosted the Kansas City Wizards for 200 games in the club’s first 12 seasons from 1996 to 2007. However, since then, the venue has only hosted two soccer games. One was the aforementioned Sporting KC friendly against Manchester United. Then, in 2015, Mexico played a friendly at Arrowhead against Paraguay in front of 38,114 fans. That was the last time Arrowhead hosted a soccer game.
While the venue is used to major games with the Kansas City Chiefs hosting consistent AFC Championship Games in the NFL, soccer presents a different challenge and atmosphere.
This game between Inter Miami and Sporting Kansas City will be a great opportunity for the stadium to prepare. After all, this is one of the venues responsible for games in the Copa America and the 2026 World Cup . For 2024, Arrowhead is hosting just one game. Yet, it has the potential to be one of the biggest games of the tournament. The United States Men’s National Team is playing South American contender Uruguay in the final group-stage game.
Then, in 2026, Arrowhead will host six games in the tournament. That includes four games in the group stage, a round-of-16 clash and a concluding quarterfinal matchup. Those games will draw major crowds. The Inter Miami game will be a fascinating look to see how Arrowhead stacks up with soccer games and audiences.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:
From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.
At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.
According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.
The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.
Coffee Ring
The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.
Zodiac Metro
According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.
Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.
Paleontological finds
Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!
