What Is The Cut Line In Golf?

What Is The Cut Line In Golf

The cut line in PGA tournaments is the score of the player in 65th place.  The cut line is an important part of any golf tournament, as it determines who will move on to the final rounds. Although PGA Tour tournaments use a 65th place cut line, different tournaments have different cut lines. Keep reading to learn how cut lines work in golf.

Table of Contents

Cut line definition, how is the cut line determined, cut lines for different tournaments, why do golf tournaments have cut lines.

In golf, the cut line determines which golfers advance to the final rounds.  It draws the line between golfers who are still playing and golfers who have been cut from the tournament.

For example, in a standard 132-player PGA Tour tournament, there will be a cut after the first two rounds. Golfers are ranked by their scores and those ranked below 65th place are sent home. Those tied for 65th place also advance. The cut line itself is the score that a player must have or be above in order to stay in the tournament and continue competing.

If you qualify for a golf tournament, you have to play during the work week hours, which include both Thursday and Friday. Both of these days are used to determine the rankings going into the weekend. After two rounds, the typical standard cut line for a PGA Tour golf tournament is the score of the 65th-lowest scoring player and ties.

If you finish at that score or better, your score is considered good enough to keep you in the competition. Some tournaments also use a 54-hole cut when a higher cut line is used after 36 holes; when more than 78 of the players qualify for the next round of the tournament, a second cut will occur at 54 holes. This cut determines who ends up playing in the final round for a chance to be the champion of the tournament.

The final cut line score for the 2022 Players Championship was +2, with only 71 golfers making it to the third round of the tournament. Since there were only 72 holes in the entire tournament, the cut line was after the first two days (36 holes).

On the PGA Tour, one of the most popular golf tournaments globally, the European Tour, and the Korn Ferry Tour, the cut line is to the top 65 players and ties, while on the LPGA Tour, the cut line is to the top 70 players and ties. Each tour or tournament sets its own cut line depending on the number of participants and the level of competition.

There are two main reasons golf tournaments have cut lines, for field control and to fulfill a specific format.  The first reason, field control, is because golf tournaments start out with hundreds of participants. Due to this, people are usually grouped into groups of three for the first two rounds. After these two rounds, it becomes more obvious who has put themselves in the position to potentially win the tournament. By cutting the field down, the organizers of the tournament can get a better understanding of the players with a chance to win or ones that can finish well.

The cut line also helps to fulfill a specific format when there is a set number of cuts that need to be made for a tournament to function as planned. Tournaments typically only pay out portions of the purse to players who play the whole weekend. As a result, it is crucial for players to make the cut line, as they will not get paid if they don’t.

How does a cut line work?

A cut line determines which golfers advance to the final rounds of the tournament. After the initial rounds, the golfers are ranked by score. Those with scores above or tied with the cut line score advance to the final rounds. Golfers with scores below the cut line are eliminated from the tournament.

What is the PGA cut line?

In PGA Tour tournaments, the cut line is the score of the golfer in 65th place . All golfers tied with 65th place also advance. The cut line is 70 in LPGA Tour tournaments, so the advancing group includes all golfers who tie or are above 70th place.

What is the European Tour cut rule, and how is the cut line determined?

Most European Tour (DP World Tour) occasions have a lower after two rounds, or 36 holes, all the way down to a subject for the ultimate two rounds. As of the 2017-18 season, the lower rule is all the way down to the highest 65 gamers and ties, with these gamers getting to complete out the match offered lower than 78 gamers ending contained in the 36-hole lower line.

Within the occasion that 78 or extra gamers make the 36-hole lower, then the European Tour has a secondary lower after 54 holes to scale back the sphere to the quantity nearest attainable to 72 gamers. These gamers who survive the secondary lower play the ultimate spherical and have a chance to maneuver up the leaderboard. The gamers who miss the secondary lower are thought of MDF, or “made the lower, did not end,” and earn cash and Race to Dubai factors for his or her standing by means of 54 holes.

All gamers who make the 36-hole lower are paid in accordance with the European Tour purse distribution steerage.

Nevertheless, not each European Tour (DP World Tour) occasion has a 36-hole lower line. Some occasions will not be topic to the European Tour lower rule. Gamers who full 4 rounds in these occasions earn credit score for a lower made on the European Tour.

HAMILTON, Ontario – Weekend plans?

The field of 156, whittled to 154 with two withdrawals after the first round, was trimmed some more on Friday after 36 holes. It took shooting even-par 140 for 36 holes to be one of the 69 players to advance to the weekend. Kudos to Maverick McNealy, who bounced back from an opening-round 74 to shoot 65 on Friday.

While some fan favorites such as Rory McIlroy managed to secure a weekend tee time, others weren’t so fortunate. Among the biggest losses had to be the defending champion Nick Taylor, who ended the 69-year drought without a victory by a Canadian in his national championship a year ago.

Others on the struggle bus this week include RBC ambassadors Sahith Theegala and Cameron Young, proving once again that the cut shows no favorites. There were a record 28 Canadians in the field to start the RBC Canadian Open but only eight remain with a chance to make it back-to-back native sons to hoist the trophy.

Here’s a closer look at some of the pros who were sent packing after the 36-hole cut.

Cameron Young, 1 over

2024 RBC Canadian Open

Young missed his first cut in 13 starts this season, shooting 69-72.

Young had a rollercoaster second round. He made six birdies but still managed to shoot 2-over 72 on Friday. Starting on the back nine, he made four bogeys in a row starting at No. 11. But with all those birdies, he was at even for the tournament with three holes to go before making a double bogey at No. 7.

Young found just five fairways on Friday. He ranked 147 th  in the field in SG: Approach the Green and was just 2 of 9 in scrambling.

Mike Weir, 1 over

2024 RBC Canadian Open

Weir played solidly on Thursday, posting a 68, but he backed up on Friday and made bogey at the final two holes to shoot 73 and miss the cut by one.

This was Weir’s 31st career start at the RBC Canadian Open. The 54-year-old past Masters champion is still beloved in his homeland and will be the captain of the International Team later this year at the Presidents Cup at Royal Montreal. Weir ranked 153 of 154 in driving distance this week. He’ll head back to PGA Tour Champions next week.

Adam Hadwin, 2 over

2024 RBC Canadian Open

The Canadian missed the cut for the first time at his national championship since 2018 and just his fourth in 15 starts this season (and first since the Players in March). It was a week where there wasn’t a glaring weakness in his game; rather all facets were just a little off.

Alex Noren, 2 over

2024 RBC Canadian Open

The streak is over for Noren. The Swede had made the cut at all 12 starts this season and 17 in a row dating to last season. But he wasn’t just making cuts, he was cashing some nice checks. He had finished in the top 25 in eight straight starts. But Noren shot 70-72 to miss by two strokes.

Blame the short game, which was shabby (ranked 135 th  in SG: Around the Green for the week) and the driver. He hit just four fairways on Friday. He managed just one birdie in the second round, which just didn’t cut it.

Nick Taylor, 3 over

2024 RBC Canadian Open

The defending champion, who famously made a 72-foot eagle putt to win the title last year, used up the magic in his putter. He ranked 152 nd  in SG: putting in the first round, losing more than four strokes to the field. The putter was slightly better in the second round but on Friday his driver let him down. He ranked 138th in SG: Off the Tee. The one bright spot: he ranked first in SG: Around the Green for the first 36 holes.

Eric Cole, 4 over

2024 RBC Canadian Open

The 2022-23 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year is mired in a slump. He shot 74-70 to miss his third straight cut and fourth in his last five starts. Cole has just one top-10 finish this season at the Genesis Invitational in February.

Cole ranked 151 st  in SG: Aprroach the Green in the first round but ranked fifth in the same category in the second round. The putter was cold both rounds. He lost more than a stroke on the greens each day and ranked 133 rd  in SG: putting.

Sahith Theegala, 5 over

2024 RBC Canadian Open

Theegala, ranked fifth in the FedEx Cup and 12 th  in the world, shot 74-71 to miss just his third cut of the year in 15 starts.

Theegala made a pair of doubles at Nos. 14 and 15 on Thursday. His short game (No. 138) and putting (No. 144) let him down in the first round. Theegala putted slightly better on Friday but it just wasn’t his week. He ranked 138 th  in SG: putting.

Justin Suh, 7 over

2024 RBC Canadian Open

Justin Suh plays an approach shot on the 12th hole during the second round of the 2024 RBC Canadian Open at Hamilton Golf & Country Club. (Photo: Minas Panagiotakis/Getty Images)

The sophomore slump for Suh continues. The former USC Trojan missed his 12 th  cut in 16 starts this season and fifth in his last six starts. He has just one top-25 finish all season and entered the week No. 179 in the FedEx Cup.

Suh struggled with the driver (No. 151 in SG: Off the Tee on Friday) and his approach game wasn’t much better – he ranked 149 th  in the first round. Even in Canada, shooting double hockey sticks (77) is no good.

Matt Kuchar, 8 over

2024 Charles Schwab Challenge

Kuchar’s 15 th  start at the RBC Canadian Open resulted in his fifth career missed cut. More disconcerting news: it’s his 10 th  missed cut of the season.

Kuchar hit just four fairways on Thursday and ranked No. 154 in SG: Off-the-Tee (or dead last) on his way to a 75. Kuchar failed to make a birdie in the first round. In fact, it took 31 holes to break the birdie seal and that is a recipe for a weekend off.

2024 Memorial Tournament picks, predictions, field, odds: Proven golf expert fading Patrick Cantlay

Sia nejad reveals his memorial tournament 2024 picks, props, and sleepers for this week's pga tour event in dublin, ohio.

patrick-cantlay.jpg

The 2024 Memorial Tournament will provide golf fans with several star-studded pairings through the first two days of action. Rory McIlroy will play alongside Justin Thomas when play gets underway on Thursday, June 6, from Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio. The 2024 Memorial Tournament tee times feature this duo going off at 1:20 p.m. ET on Thursday. Elsewhere in the Memorial Tournament 2024 field, defending champion Viktor Hovland will be paired with Xander Schauffele, who's coming off his first major win at the PGA Championship.

According to the latest 2024 PGA Championship odds, Scottie Scheffler is listed as the +360 favorite. The No. 1 ranked player in the world is followed by McIlroy (+800), Schauffele (+900) and Collin Morikawa (+1400) on the PGA odds board. Before locking in any 2024 Memorial Tournament picks, make sure you  see the PGA Tour predictions and best bets from golf betting and fantasy expert Sia Nejad .

Nejad specializes in betting and DFS in golf, among other sports. He's had incredible success in the outright and first-round leader markets and in betting head-to-head matchups. He also has been solid with his head-to-head matchups since last year's Charles Schwab Challenge, going 48-30-3 and returning 15.09 units over that span. That's a $1,509 profit for $100 bettors since May 2023. Nejad also nailed Wyndham Clark, a 75-1 longshot, as the outright winner at the Wells Fargo Championship. In 2023, SportsLine debuted "The Early Wedge," and in the first three months of the show, he hit two first-round leaders and three outright winners.

Now, Nejad has turned his attention to the 2024 Memorial Tournament field and locked in his best bets, top sleepers and favorites to avoid. See who they are at SportsLine .

Top 2024 Memorial Tournament expert picks

One surprise: Nejad is low on the chances of Patrick Cantlay (+2500), even though he has won this event twice in the last five years (2019, 2021). Cantlay has had tremendous success at Muirfield Village in recent years, but he's struggled mightily in 2024. He's coming off a T-54 finish at the PGA Championship and he's finished T-22 or worse in six of his last seven starts on the PGA Tour.

Cantlay's recent struggles can be directly attributed to his iron play. The 32-year-old enters the 2024 Memorial Tournament ranked 122nd in strokes gained: approach to green (-0.153) and 146th in greens in regulation percentage (62.68%). He's also been inconsistent off the tee, ranking 69th in driving accuracy (63.97%) and 72nd in strokes gained: off the tee (0.147). Muirfield Village demands precision, which doesn't bode well for Cantlay's chances to finish on top of the leaderboard this week. "I don't think he's in the type of form where we can capitalize on an outright given how well some of the other golfers that are +3000 and shorter are playing," Nejad told SportsLine.

Instead, Nejad is high on Corey Conners, who is a +5500 longshot. Conners is coming off his best finish of the season, a sixth-place showing at the RBC Canadian Open. He's finished T-13 or better in three of his last four starts and has made the cut in all 15 of his events this season.

Conners has struggled a bit with his putter, but he's among the best ball strikers on the PGA Tour. In fact, Conners is ranked second in strokes gained: approach to green (0.997) and greens in regulation percentage (72.22%). Nejad notes that Conners is "typically a fantastic ball striker and he's shown a recent ability to spike with the putter gaining an insane 6.42 strokes in last week's RBC Canadian Open."  See which other players to back at SportsLine .

How to make 2024 Memorial Tournament picks

Nejad has locked in his best bets for the 2024 Memorial Tournament and is backing several longshots, including one that is priced at more than +7000. This player "sets up too well for this course to be at this long of a number" and is a longshot who could surprise. You can see Nejad's PGA Tour picks only at SportsLine .

So which players should you target or avoid for the 2024 Memorial Tournament, and which player in the Memorial Tournament 2024 field could bring a huge payday at more than +7000? 2024 the Memorial Tournament format, cut rules and playoff format

european golf tour cut line

The 2024 Memorial Tournament format remains unchanged this year, with the PGA Tour event played at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio.

The 2024 Memorial Tournament field is 73 players.

The Memorial Tournament field is made up of a variety of players, namely the players who finished in the top 50 in last season's FedEx Cup standings, as well as those having great 2024 seasons so far.

Memorial Tournament format

Memorial Tournament format is a 72-hole event. The 73 pros are split into threesomes for each of the first two days.

The field is divided into morning and afternoon waves for the first two rounds, with players competing in threesomes each day. The same threesomes play together in each of the first two rounds, with all groups playing together in the same window.

A cut is made after 36 holes to the top 50 players and ties, as well as those within 10 shots of the lead. All players who make the field and make the cut are eligible to finish the event.

For the third and fourth rounds, the pairings and tee times are made based on each player's total score through two and three rounds, respectively. Players with the highest total score go first, then in descending order until the two players with the lowest total score in the final group.

The player with the lowest total score after 72 holes is the winner and will earn the 2024 Memorial Tournament winner's share of the purse.

The winning player will get a two-season PGA Tour exemption. The winner is exempt into other tournaments as well. The winner earns 700 FedEx Cup points.

Memorial Tournament playoff format

A playoff to settle any ties after 72 holes will be played under PGA Tour rules. The Memorial Tournament playoff format is a sudden-death format, with playoff holes being 18, 18, 17 and then 18 repeated, played by any qualifying players. The players compete hole-by-hole until a winner is determined by a player scoring the lowest among the remaining players.
