Endless Landscapes, No People!

For the past several decades, a small number of Danish fishermen have been fishing the coastal rivers of Western Greenland during the short summer season for sea-run arctic char. Almost every river on the world’s biggest island holds good numbers of char from late June through September, and anglers “in the know” would make the trip to catch large char in impressive numbers. Greenland became known as a fishing mecca for the Danes (and their Scandinavian neighbours in Sweden and Norway) during the 1970s and 1980s, although at the time there was very little in the way of fishing infrastructure. Most anglers struggled with transportation logistics and – when they could finally reach the rivers – dealt with basic and rustic camping conditions. Subsequently, the 1990s, interest in traveling to Greenland to fish remote rivers began to drop in the Scandinavian market. Around 2010, our outfitting partners began work on new camps and programs, and today their developed offerings and exclusive fishing concessions have become the standard for great fly fishing in Greenland. Through our outfitting partners, Yellow Dog is excited to offer these amazing fisheries to the world, and we believe strongly that Greenland offers an exciting, adventurous, and totally unique new frontier for the traveling angler.

  • Kangia River Lodge

Located in a hidden valley on Greenland’s west coast, Kangia river is widely known among fly anglers as the premier river in Greenland for catching big sea-run Arctic Char. Kangia’s multitude of pools and varying structure makes this river a true fly fishing paradise!

Species: Sea-Run Arctic Char

greenland fishing trips

Spectacular Kangia

The Kangia River is the hidden gem of Greenland’s West Coast and is widely known for its exceptionally large runs of Arctic char , its unbelievable structure, and its incomparable beauty. Add to that the fact that the average size fish running up Kangia is substantially larger than in other rivers in Greenland and things begin to sound really interesting. This is a river truly made for fly fishing with its cut-banks, rapids, slow and deep stretches, waterfalls, and pocket-water all the way down to its tidally influenced delta. Located seven kilometers upstream from camp is a ten-meter high waterfall which blocks migrating fish from progressing up-river and creates a deep pool stacked with huge fish. Since the waterfall stops all fish from moving further up the system, where they would eventually disappear into bigger lakes and spread out over huge distances as is the case with most sea-run char rivers, fish in Kangia stays in the river and spread out along the 10 km long stretch of river between the river mouth and the waterfall.

What's So Special About Kangia?

The west coast of Greenland is lined by spectacular fjords and is inhabited by at least 15 species of whales and a wide-range of other wildlife. During the summer season coinciding with our operations, you can easily encounter humpbacks cruising the open coastal waters. Greenlandic waters are also some of the most fish-abundant on the planet and as a result, anglers are able to catch cod on fly gear near the Kangia River mouth and from almost any cliffside along the coast. Although smaller runs of Arctic char are known to venture up several rivers and streams along the west coast of Greenland, the sheer number and size of fish running up the Kangia River is truly remarkable. Unlike other locations in the region, char in the Kangia weigh in at well-above 2 kg on average, and we commonly land fish in the 3-4 kg range and above. The biggest fish landed so far weighed in at 6.3 kg (14 lbs), but several bigger fish have been hooked and lost. Fish this size are hard not only to hook but even more so to land. Anglers aiming to set new records better come well-prepared as Arctic char are strong fighters and will put on a show that will leave seasoned anglers baffled.

Accommodation

greenland fishing trips

Simple Yet Comfortable

The Kangia River Lodge is situated on a plateau at the delta of the majestic Kangia River and comes with spectacular views overlooking the home pool and a sheltered bay where the river meets the Atlantic Ocean. Though the lodge is simple, it’s equipped with all the basics one needs for a comfortable stay during a week of fishing.

The lodge consists of one main building and three separate cabins. Each cabin consists of three single rooms, two smaller ones with single beds, and one slightly larger one with a king-size bed. The sleeping quarters in the main lodge consist of six cabin-style rooms equipped with bunk beds, each room will be used as a single room.

Breakfast and Dinner are served in the common dining area in the main building, while lunch is usually served by the river.  The main lodge has two toilets, two showers, a bar and lounge area, and a spacious dining area overlooking the river. The veranda at the front of the lodge with its view of the river mouth and valley below is the perfect place to enjoy an after-fish drink and share some fishing stories with your friends.

Apart from the main lodge, we have a smaller satellite camp located 2.7 km upriver that offers anglers a comfortable resting place at one of our fishing hotspots. This camp is a great starting point for anglers who want to fish the middle and upper sections of the river. To make your hike to this location as easy as possible, you can leave your waders and wading shoes at the satellite camp and walk to and from the lodge in regular hiking shoes and pants. Whether you prefer to stay near the main lodge or venture all the way up to the waterfall is up to you. The fish are plentiful throughout the river and you can fish at your own pace all day, every day.

Kangia3

Tackle & Technique

Live out your fishing fantasies.

Early in the season bigger steelhead intruders and streamers presented on a light skagit or sink-tip line outfit are perfect when searching for big chrome fish in higher water conditions. Whether on a switch rod or a single-hand rod is a matter of personal preference. Every pool in the river can be comfortably fished with a single-hand rod under all conditions. Obviously, streamers, nymphs, rubberlegs, and classic salmon flies work most of the time but we recommend that everyone try the surface game! Swinging or skating a gurgler or foam fly on the surface with bow waves rising up behind the fly is something special and is about as exhilarating as it gets! When fly fishing in Kangia it’s only your imagination that limits your choice of fly and technique.

greenland fishing trips

Is Greenland the angling world's newest frontier? Some think so. In fact, many anglers aren't even aware that it is possible to travel to Greenland to fish. Thanks to remaining out of the spotlight, as well as to Greenland's remote location and lack of development, many of the island's rivers remain unexplored. Of those that have been scouted by anglers, the Kangia is king. As the seasonal home to an uncharacteristically large population of powerful, sea-run Arctic char, there may be no river in all of Greenland that offers the bounty of the Kangia.

Surrounding the Kangia river valley are coastal Greenland's rugged mountains and crystalline rock of the Precambrian shield. Some of the oldest rock on the planet—nearly 4 billion years old—is found in this part of Greenland. Diverse wildlife also predominate, with seals, as many as 15 species of whales, caribou, Musk oxen, fox, and mountain hares regular sightings near the Kangia.

The Fishing

Situated on the southwestern coast of Greenland amongst its breathtaking fjords, the Kangia River empties directly into the Atlantic Ocean. From there, sea-run char venture a short 10km upriver, where fish passage is blocked by a natural waterfall. The waterfall and the large, seasonal runs of Arctic char combine to concentrate fish heavily through the entire fishable length of the river. Anglers will find char congregating in nearly ever run, riffle, and pool throughout the Kangia.

Catch rates on the river exceed almost every angler's expectations. The Kangia is a place where 50-fish days aren't just possible, they're common.

The Arctic char in the Kangia also tend to be significantly larger than those found in other Greenland rivers, though know one knows why. An average char in the Kangia weighs in at over 2 kg (~5 lbs), 3-4 kg char are common (~7-9 pounds), and fish over 5 kg (~ 11 pounds) are typically encountered each week. The largest char caught on the Kangia tipped the scales at 6.3kg (14 pounds) — and bigger fish have been hooked and lost.

Most fish are caught on swung flies or stripped streamers, with both one- and two-hand rods used on the river. Char are caught regularly with skated surface patterns, poppers, and topwater gurglers, adding a preposterously entertaining dimension to fishing on the Kangia.

Accomodations

LODGING : While there's nothing fancy about the Kangia River Lodge, which sits on a plateau overlooking the mouth of the river, its simple accommodations for up to twelve anglers are well-equipped, clean, and comfortable and feature a recently remodeled bar and lounge area.

FOOD/DRINK : Food at the lodge is simple, but tasty and abundant. Breakfasts feature eggs, meats, cereal and fresh fruit. Lunches are typically sandwiches and other simple fare. Dinners range from seafood (freshly harvested from the Kangia and nearby Atlantic Ocean) to grilled meats to pasta dishes.

CONNECTIVITY : Due to its remote location, there is no cellular service or WiFi available at the lodge. The camp staff keeps a satellite phone on hand for emergency use only.

Sample Itinerary

greenland fishing trips

Kangia River Lodge may be simple, but you'll find it welcoming, comfortable, and the perfect place to relax and enjoy a post-fishing beer or cocktail. The lodge offers expansive, stunning views of the Kangia and the Atlantic Ocean, and its deck provides unparalleled nighttime opportunities for watching the northern lights over a whiskey and a cigar.

greenland fishing trips

Your first encounter with the Kangia will no doubt be an eye-opening one. Most guests will opt to take the hike from the main lodge to an outpost upriver, where a large tent offers a place for changing out of hiking clothes and into waders, enjoying a coffee, or just taking a break from catching fish. Spend the day casting gaudy streamers or stripping and skating surface poppers to the Kangia's magical arctic char — some orange-bellied and richly-colored, having made the river their temporary home for the season, others dime-bright and electric, having only recently arrived from the salty waters of the Atlantic Ocean, just a few miles downstream.

greenland fishing trips

Each morning the Kangia offers a new opportunities to make memories you'll scarcely forget—whether chasing after fish counts, experimenting with new angling tactics, seeking out your largest fish of the trip, soaking up Greenland's otherworldly landscapes, or just munching on fresh wild blueberries on your hikes to and from the main lodge. At the end of each day, you'll hope for an evening of clear skies, so you can spend another night on the lodge's deck marveling at the aurora borealis while dreaming of the bounty the river will no doubt deliver the next day.

I love adventure… and Kangia River Lodge delivered! Getting to Kangia River Lodge is not too easy; nor should it be. Getting to the world’s largest island involves flying -- over some of the largest ice fields in the world! It also involves going through a tiny coastal village – where you get to experience a small slice of Greenland culture. Oh, and there is what some might consider a long boat ride – with views of the Greenland coastline, whales, sea life and maybe an iceberg blown down by a recent Arctic storm. The lodge is not fancy – nor should it be, you are a long way from anyone but your new fishing buddies and lodge friends. The lodge is comfortable and recent improvements make it even more comfortable and modern. The hike to the best fishing beats takes a little while – it should, you are after sea run Arctic Char who have never seen a hook or human and you have to find the pools they stage in. Your excellent guides will help you with that. The countryside is rugged, it should be – if not you wouldn’t see reindeer, hear the Arctic fox call and you wouldn’t be on an unspoiled river of the largest Island in the world, on the hunt for large, hungry sea run Arctic Char.

Arctic char

A journey back in time.

Come fish with us in Greenland , and we will be taking you to some of the most special places you have ever experienced. Rivers far away from any civilization, rivers that will offer you a journey back in time. These rivers still have big Arctic char returning by the thousands during the summer months, like they have done for thousands of years, from before the first humans found a passage to the world’s biggest island almost 5000 years ago.

Imagine a river  that hasn’t seen the negative effects of human interference. No pollution, no netting, no dams or destruction of habitat. Just thousands and thousands of fish returning to the river for their annual spawning migration and winter home, fat and feisty after months of feeding hard on the cold sea’s abundance of food.

With more than fifteen years  of experience and extensive research in Greenland we know that we fish the best rivers. Most rivers in Greenland are too small, too coloured or hasn’t big enough fish to offer great fly fishing – but those few rivers that are an exception to this rule… well, it’s mind blowing! Eventually, we identified three rivers that offered what we desired in terms of great fly fishing: big fish and plenty of clear water to fish for a week. On these three rivers, we have established our famous char camps: Erfalik Lodge, Camp North, and Napiarissat. Over the years, they have proven themselves to be three of the four best rivers in Greenland.

Kangia, the fourth great river, is located further south, near the town of Maniitsoq. Not long after we began in Greenland, we were offered a program on the Kangia River. However, we already had our hands full and made a huge mistake by turning it down! Years later, another operator picked it up and made it quite clear how foolish we had been. Therefore, when we got a second chance in 2023, we eagerly embraced it and now offer a great program at Kangia River Lodge as well.

If you’re into numbers  we don’t know of anywhere it the world that is in the same league. And for size? The biggest char we have had a chance to weigh was a staggering 8,3 kilos! And our guests have seen, and possible even caught, bigger fish than that.

You know they  often tell you: “You should have been here yesterday”. And when you hear stories from times gone by, it’s not even yesterday you missed – instead, you should have been there twenty, thirty or even fifty years ago. In Greenland, yesterday is today and thirty years ago is now. It doesn’t get any better than this: The fishing in Greenland has never – and won’t ever be better!

Skating foam flies.

Before we found  the rivers we fish today, we had no idea that arctic char would go for skated surface flies. On the very first scouting trip to the Erfalik River we brought a bit of everything in order to quickly establish if there was enough good-sized char to consider a camp there. On the very first day, our two anglers started out with spinners. Many fish? Check! Good sized fish? Check! They had six more days on the river before the boat came back to pick them up…

After a few more  days, they had also proven beyond any doubt that streamer fishing was really good: Lots of indomitable char up to – and in excess of 70 cm had been caught and released. Then one of them found a floating mouse fly in his box; a leftover fly from a trip to Alaska earlier that summer. Why not? It was a nice overcast day and the fishing was hot. He had caught more than enough fish already so he cast his little mouse close to the far bank and enjoyed watching it make its way across the river. It looked pretty cool, so he gave it a few more casts, just for fun. Well aware that there are no mice in Greenland, he was just goofing around with the mouse for a bit before going back to swinging streamers – but that’s when it happened! A wake formed several meters away, heading straight towards the mouse. When the wake reached the skating fly a nice-sized char opened its mouth, head out of the water, and sucked in the poor little thing! After that, we never really looked back.

We soon found  out that foam flies in bright colours were much more effective than a brown deer hair mouse with black foam on the back, but that’s not the point. The point is, that when you can have the fish eat on the surface skate foam flies – and only when they don’t, go back to swinging streamers or drift nymphs.

GREENLAND FLYBOX

Foam flies are favourites  of ours – simply because the surface action in Greenland can be spectacular. These flies stay effectively afloat through the fast and turbulent currents, even when using the heavier but more durable fluorocarbon leaders. For visibility, a brightly coloured foam back is preferred, and fortunately orange, purple, pink and red seems to turn on the fish really well, too. Sometimes one colour is superior to all others.

During a week of fishing, there will be plenty of opportunities to experiment with different flies. Pink, red, purple and orange flies are good starting points, and fairly large streamers in bright colours are considered char classics and work well in lakes or during high water.

Even nymphs  have really found their way into our Greenland fly boxes. We use heavily weighted nymph-style flies on long leaders in the deeper parts of the rivers as an alternative to swinging a streamer.

Besides the standard  attractor flies, smaller lightly dressed streamers can be very effective when the char seem to reject the larger patterns.

We try to fish  these rivers with the least possible impact. Therefore, we only allow the use of single barbless hooks. A single hook effectively hooks the fish and it is great for catch and release.

greenland fishing trips

GEAR FOR GREENLAND

The char run big  in Greenland and you will need a fly rod with some backbone to effectively tame them. As a go-to rod we like a fast 6 wt. rod with a fighting butt. The 6 wt. handles big flies on a windy day, but it still has enough feeling to make a delicate presentation when heading for some of the smaller creeks. The fighting butt is a great help when you need to put that extra pressure on a fresh-run fish.

Do not underestimate  your wading boots – you will be doing a fair amount of hiking when fishing in Greenland, and you’ll need a good pair of boots to keep your feet happy. What’s essential is to bring boots that fit you well and preferably a lighter model suited for hiking. Also, consider rubber soles as they provide you with great traction on the Greenland shorelines and trails.

With all the  hiking and fishing you’ll be doing, optimal clothes are crucial for your personal comfort. The weather oftentimes changes rather suddenly and – as a result – you should come prepared for most conditions. Greenland can offer anything from 20+ Celsius during the day to below 0 Celsius during the night – though between 5 and 15 degrees are the typical range in summer. We recommend layered clothing, which make it easy to adjust your core temperature according to whether you are walking or standing relatively still fishing – and to tackle changing weather conditions.

Finally, make sure  you have a mosquito net to pull over your cap and head. If the wind drops there can be lots of small flies around. They don’t bite, but a mosquito net pulled over your head makes the fishing much more enjoyable. As soon as the wind is up, they disappear as fast as they came.

  • Nanortalik is the southernmost town in Greenland and is surrounded by 5 settlements and several sheep farms. One of its surrounding settlements, Narsarmijit, is the most southerly inhabited location in the entire country.
  • Vertical cliffs and steep peaks characterize the landscape around Nanortalik. Ulamertorsuaq (1,858m) and Ketil Mountain (2,000 m) have one of the world’s highest climbing walls.
  • Qinngua valley is home to Greenland’s only natural forest. Tall mountains protect the 15km long valley floor from the cold winds that blow off the ice sheet allowing arctic tree species to grow straight and reach heights of up to 6m.
  • Although tourism is growing, the main economy of Nanortalik is crab fishing, hunting for hooded seals, and fishing in general.
  • Nanortalik means “the place with polar bears” in the Greenlandic language, as polar bears live and hunt on the sea ice outside of town.

With vertical walls that tower over intricate fjord systems and “sikorsuit” sea ice lurking just outside the harbour during the spring, Nanortalik has more in common with East Greenland than the rest of South Greenland. Rock climbers and mountaineers from around the world are drawn to the granite peaks of the nearby Tasermiut Fjord, while hikers and kayakers mount multi-day expeditions to explore the unparalleled beauty of the harsh rock that rises straight up from reflective waters.

Where to sleep in Nanortalik

Nanortalik has accommodation in the form of modern hotel rooms, hotel apartments, and bring-your-own sleeping bag hostel-style shared spaces. It is also possible to pitch your tent outside the hostel and pay a fee to just use the amenities. Things to do in Nanortalik

Nanortalik is the gateway to the spectacular Tasermiut Fjord and mountains that offer a wide range of adventures to suit all adrenaline levels. Sailing trips are the most relaxed way to enjoy nature’s masterpiece, gliding past the sheer mountains that tower over Klosterdalen (Monastery Valley) and all the way to glaciers that spill down from the Greenland ice sheet near Nanortalik. It is also possible to enjoy an overnight sailing trip where accommodation is provided in comfortable pre-arranged tents and a dinner made from Greenlandic ingredients is served around a campfire.

Other sailing trips from Nanortalik will take you to visit one of Greenland’s few forests, small settlements hidden between the jagged peaks of the Cape Farewell waterways, and the Uunartoq hot springs, where 38-degree Celsius water relaxes muscles and keeps you warm despite icebergs floating nearby.

For a more active holiday, multi-day kayaking and hiking expeditions offer the chance to explore and take in this spectacular landscape in more detail. Experienced backcountry hikers and kayakers can chart their own adventures but must be equipped with safety equipment, including emergency beacons and defense against the king of arctic wildlife, the polar bear. However, there are also many professionally organised expeditions from Nanortalik that take care of everything for you, cover all the highlights of the area, and typically last between 5 days and two weeks.

Expeditions can also be arranged for experienced climbers and mountaineers who want to tackle some of the tallest climbing walls in the world. Together with Ketil mountain (2,000m), Ulamertorsuaq (1,858m) is the most commonly climbed, there are also unique climbing possibilities in almost all the fjords around Nanortalik.

Exploring Nanortalik Island itself, there are several day-hikes that leave directly from town. Climbing to the top of Qaqqarsuasik (Big Mountain / Storfjeldet) or Quassik (Raven Mountain / Ravnefjeldet) for breathtaking views over the island can be done guided or independently. Or you can visit the ruins at Sissarissoq, where Nanortalik was first established, by walking along the coast. Keep a sharp eye out as you hike because there are usually plenty of whales (especially Minke whales) close to Nanortalik during the warmer months.

Back in town, the area around the old colonial port is almost unchanged from when it was built and presents an authentic and well-preserved experience of a 19th century Greenlandic settlement. Ten of its buildings now operate as showrooms for the Nanortalik museum, with exhibitions ranging from traditional seal fat production, healthcare and medicinal plants, Viking clothing, radio communication, traditional vessels like the kayak and umiaq, and the famous shipwreck Hans Hedtoft that disappeared into thin air. Although you can visit the museum independently, the best overview can be obtained as part of a city walk, which also introduces you to other areas of town and can be extended to include a kaffemik and/or traditional Greenlandic dinner with a local family.
