Everything you need to know about the 2024 Kentucky Derby post positions

Apr 27, 2024 j. keeler johnson/twinspires.com.

traveller synonyms

Fierceness wins the Florida Derby (Photo by Coglianese Photos)

Post positions for the 15oth Kentucky Derby (G1) were drawn on Saturday evening, kicking off the annual debate among bettors as to which horses drew well, which drew poorly, and which might enjoy favorable trips in the 2024 “Run for the Roses.”

Some conclusions will be anecdotal, based on gut feelings and the relative draws of well-regarded horses. Other takeaways will be based on cold, hard data—specifically, the post position statistics meticulously compiled by Churchill Downs since the starting gate was first introduced for the 1930 Kentucky Derby .

How many winners have broken from post 1? What’s the win percentage of post 15? What percent of horses finish in the money (first, second, or third) when breaking from post 5? Who was the last horse to win from post 14? How about the last horse to finish in the money from post 17?

If you find yourself asking any of these questions, we’ve got you covered with a convenient chart analyzing all the Kentucky Derby post position data:

A total of 22 horses have entered the 2024 Kentucky Derby. In addition to the 20 horses listed in the table above, Epic Ride (#21) and Mugatu (#22) are on the also-eligible list.

In the event one or more horses scratch from the main body of the field, all horses drawn outside of the scratched horse(s) will move inward, and Epic Ride and/or Mugatu will draw into the field and start from the outside post(s). In 2022, #21 Rich Strike drew in off the also-eligible list and started from post 20. Capitalizing on a fast pace, he rallied to victory at odds of 80-1, joining Big Brown (2008) as one of two Kentucky Derby winners to break from post 20.

After analyzing the data in the post positions chart, here are a few key takeaways:

• Post 1 is widely considered a disadvantage since it’s difficult for horses to work out a clean trip while breaking from the inside of a 20-horse field. But while post 1 hasn’t produced a Derby winner since Ferdinand in 1986, post 2, post 9, post 12, post 14, and post 17 have endured even longer streaks of frustration. Post 14 hasn’t produced a Derby winner since Carry Back in 1961 , and horses breaking from post 17 have gone 0-for-44. That's right—post 17 has yet to produce a Kentucky Derby winner.

• Not every Kentucky Derby features a full field, so inside posts are more likely to compile high win percentages than outside posts. In a 10-horse field, each post has a 10% chance at producing the winner. In a 20-horse field, each post has a 5% chance.

• Keeping that in mind, it’s notable how many Kentucky Derby winners have broken from outside posts in recent years. Eight of the last 13 winners (62%) started from post 13 or wider, suggesting unencumbered trips are more important than saving ground in the Kentucky Derby.

• But based on a strict reading of the statistics, post 5 ranks among the best positions a horse can hope to draw. Not only has post 5 produced the most winners (10), the most runners-up (eight, tied with posts 3 and 6), and the second-highest win percentage (10.6%), it also produced a top-five finisher in every Kentucky Derby from 2012 through 2019. This impressive streak included the victorious duo of California Chrome (2014) and Always Dreaming (2017).

• Post 15 has been particularly advantageous in the last dozen years, producing Kentucky Derby winners Orb (2013), American Pharoah (2015), and Authentic (2020). Post 7 has also fared well, churning out Justify (2018) and Mandaloun (2021), while post 8 has yielded Mine That Bird (2009) and Mage (2023) in the last 15 years.

Will Fierceness become the first Kentucky Derby winner to break from post 17? Will Catalytic add to the decorated resume of post 5?

Will Dornoch overcome the rail draw? Will Sierra Leone, Encino, Track Phantom, or Endlessly reverse the long losing streaks for their respective post positions?

We’ll find out on the first Saturday in May.

Off the Grid: Sally breaks down USA TODAY's daily crossword puzzle, Gotcha in the End

traveller synonyms

There are spoilers ahead. You might want to solve today's puzzle before reading further! Gotcha in the End

Constructor: Olivia Mitra Framke

Editor: Amanda Rafkin

Comments from Today’s Crossword Constructor

Olivia: This was a surprisingly tricky grid to fill! I was a little ambitious with the design, having some long down answers close enough to each other to make things a bit complicated. I'm super happy with how it turned out, especially the mini easter egg of CLASSICAL / ORCHESTRA - something that, as a flutist, is close to my heart.

My favorite clues that I'm thrilled made the cut in this puzzle are the ones for COMIC CON [Event where you might see Loki and Darth Vader hanging out], NIPPLE [Body part featured in some erotic art], and DILL [___ rice (herby Persian dish)]. My favorite original clue that ended up not making the cut was for FACEPLANT [What you might do on your bed after a very, very long day]. Definitely something I experience on the reg 😅 Hope you enjoyed the puzzle!

What I Learned from Today’s Puzzle

  • MITSKI (64A: Singer who wrote the lyric "Give me one good movie kiss and I'll be alright") MITSKI's 2018 song, "Nobody," contains the lyric, "Give me one good movie kiss / And I'll be alright." I'm familiar with the singer and songwriter MITSKI, but not enough to recognize these lyrics, and I was thankful for help from crossing answers.
  • ORI (8D: ___ and the Blind Forest (video game)) In the video game ORI and the Blind Forest (2015), the title character is a small white spirit, and one of two characters that players can control. In addition to ORI, players assume control of Sein, the "light and eyes of the Spirit Tree." Play of ORI and the Blind Forest emphasizes exploration and collecting items, as ORI jumps from platforms and solves puzzles. A sequel game, ORI and the Will of the Wisps , was released in 2020.
  • MARA (50D: Luke's beloved in Star Wars Legends lore) Star Wars Legends is the term used to refer to non-canonical Star Wars media; it includes some spin-off films and TV series, as well as books, comic books, and video games. MARA Jade Skywalker first appeared in Timothy Zahn's book, Heir to the Empire (1991). She is the wife of Luke Skywalker, and the mother of Ben Skywalker. Add this information to the long list of Star Wars facts I have learned from today's constructor!

Random Thoughts & Interesting Things

  • COMIC CON (17A: Event where you might see Loki and Darth Vader hanging out) A COMIC CON is a convention of fans that celebrates COMIC book culture and related popular art forms. A number of COMIC CON attendees participate in cosplay (costume play), dressing up as characters such as the Marvel Comics character Loki, or the Star Wars character, Darth Vader.
  • STEELE (20A: Fitting surname for a grifter) This clue brings to mind the TV series Remington STEELE (1982-1987), and the title character portrayed by Pierce Brosnan. This is a bit of a theme bonus for this GOTCHA puzzle. Hopefully, a person named STEELE will never steal from you.
  • COBB (26A: Salad with bacon and eggs) A COBB salad traditionally consists of lettuce, tomato, bacon, chopped chicken, hard-boiled eggs, and avocado. The salad is often presented with the lettuce as a base, and the other ingredients arranged in neat rows on top. There are various stories about the origin of the COBB salad. Most versions agree that the salad originated at the Hollywood Brown Derby restaurant, owned by Robert Howard COBB. One story is that COBB himself invented the salad late one night in 1937, tossing together leftovers he found in the kitchen, and adding bacon.
  • ELISE (30A: "Fur ___" (Beethoven piece)) Although "Für ELISE" (aka Bagatelle No. 25 in A minor) is one of Ludwig van Beethoven's most popular pieces, the song was not published until forty years after his death. There isn't consensus on the identity of the ELISE in the title. If you're not familiar with "Für ELISE," I invite you to take a listen . Chances are you've heard the song played at a piano concert, in a music box, or as a ringtone.
  • BADMINTON RACKET (39A: Item used to hit a shuttlecock) A shuttlecock, also called a birdie or a shuttle, is the projectile used in the sport of BADMINTON. A shuttlecock is made of feathers (goose, duck, or plastic) embedded in a cork or rubber base. During a game, players use a BADMINTON RACKET to hit the shuttlecock across a net. When I was young, I thought the name of this game was "bad mitten" – as a result, I have to stop and really think about how to spell it.
  • TYRA (45A: Supermodel Banks) In 2003, supermodel TYRA Banks created the reality TV series America's Top Model . She hosted the show for each of its 24 seasons except one. (On season 23, she was a guest host and Rita Ora was the main host.) TYRA Banks also hosted three seasons of Dancing With the Stars . In 2014, TYRA Banks founded a cosmetics brand – TYRA Beauty.
  • ASAHI (46A: Japanese beer brand) ASAHI Breweries was founded as the Osaka Beer Company in 1889. ASAHI is the largest beer brewer in Japan. I am not a beer drinker. I learned about ASAHI beer from a crossword (of course!).
  • DILL (53A: ___ rice (herby Persian dish)) I am a fan of DILL, so I think I may try making DILL rice sometime soon. I found a recipe from the Spruce Eats that looks like it will be delicious.
  • TLC (56A: "No Scrubs" group) "No Scrubs" is a 1999 song by the girl group TLC off of their album  FanMail .
  • HAT TRICK (62A: Trilogy of successes) I generally associate a HAT TRICK with hockey, used to refer to a player scoring three times in a single game. Today I learned that the term is used in other sports, and simply as a general term to refer to a trio of successes. The term HAT TRICK originated with the game of cricket. A bowler who retired three batsman with three consecutive balls was awarded a new HAT to commemorate the feat.
  • IDA (68A: Activist ___ B. Wells) I wrote about journalist IDA B. Wells ten days ago .
  • BOOTS (2D: Footwear for Puss) I wrote about Puss in BOOTS last month when we saw the character mentioned in a clue for OGRE. My cat, Willow, approves of cat content in the puzzle, but is not fond of repeated references to cats that wear BOOTS. I think she's afraid it might give me ideas.
  • COMET (3D: Icy celestial body) A COMET is essentially an icy ball of dirt. Left over from the formation of the solar system approximately 4.6 billion years ago, COMETs are made of dust, rocks, and ice. COMETs orbit the Sun. When a COMET gets close to the Sun, it heats up, and releases dust and gases that trail behind the COMET and form its characteristic tail.
  • SER (16A: Infinitive form of soy, in Spanish) The Spanish word SER means "to be." Here's a chart summarizing the various conjugations of SER . And here's my confession: Although I know a slight amount of Spanish, when I come to a clue like this I skip over it and wait for crossing answers to reveal the correct letters.
  • OBI (34D: ___-Wan Kenobi (Qui-Gon Jinn's padawan)) Olivia managed to get a trio of Star Wars references into this puzzle! A Padawan is a JEDI apprentice. A Padawan has completed initial Jedi training, and has advanced to studying with a mentor. In the first  Star Wars  movie to be released, retroactively titled  Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope  (1977), OBI-Wan Kenobi (Alec Guinness) is a Jedi Master and a mentor to young Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), who is a Padawan. Of course, OBI-Wan Kenobi was also a Padawan at one time. In the Star Wars prequel trilogy, Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson) was a mentor of a younger OBI-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor).
  • ERICA (51D: D&D and ice cream enthusiast in "Stranger Things") Stranger Things  is a Netflix TV series about a small town dealing with a hostile alternate dimension. Beginning in season 2, Priah Ferguson portrays ERICA , a young girl who has an avid interest in D&D ( Dungeons & Dragons ). At one point, ERICA agrees to help with a plan in exchange for "free ice cream for life." I'll be honest, "free ice cream for life" is extremely appealing.
  • DECAL (52D: Sticker on a laptop) DECALs are an easy way to add some personality to one's laptop. Here's my laptop sticker collection.

Crossword Puzzle Theme Synopsis

  • COMIC CON (17A: Event where you might see Loki and Darth Vader hanging out)
  • BADMINTON RACKET (39A: Item used to hit a shuttlecock)
  • HAT TRICK (62A: Trilogy of successes)

The END word of each theme answer is a synonym for a scam, or a "GOTCHA": CON, RACKET, and TRICK.

Fortunately, solving this puzzle was much more enjoyable than falling for a CON, a RACKET, or a TRICK. In addition to the answers I've highlighted above, I also enjoyed BE PATIENT, MURALIST, ORCHESTRA, CLASSICAL, and GO PUBLIC. Thank you, Olivia, for this delightful puzzle.

A Friend of Obama Who Could Soon Share the World Stage With Trump

After Britain’s next election, David Lammy is likely to be foreign secretary. He’s setting out a “progressive realist” policy — and forging ties on the U.S. right, just in case.

David Lammy, in a dark suit and shirt, speaking to people at an outdoor market.

By Mark Landler

Reporting from London

Few British politicians have American ties as deep as those of David Lammy, who is set to become Britain’s foreign secretary if the opposition Labour Party wins the coming election, as the polls suggest it will.

A son of Guyanese immigrants who grew up poor in working-class London , he spent summers with relatives in Brooklyn and Queens, working at Con Edison, before earning a master's degree at Harvard Law School and befriending Barack Obama, for whom he canvassed in Chicago during his first presidential campaign.

Yet now, on the cusp of becoming Britain’s chief diplomat, Mr. Lammy finds himself facing an uncertain, even potentially hostile, American political landscape. President Biden and the Democrats, with whom Mr. Lammy has cultivated a deep network of contacts, are fighting to hold off a resurgent Donald J. Trump.

Having been chosen by the Labour leader, Keir Starmer , partly because of his trans-Atlantic credentials, Mr. Lammy, 51, is scrambling to build ties with Republicans and, more challengingly, with those around Mr. Trump. It’s a very different American establishment from the Democratic one he knows so well.

Would Mr. Lammy pay a visit to Mar-a-Lago, Mr. Trump’s Palm Beach estate, as David Cameron, Britain’s current foreign secretary, did two weeks ago to lobby the former president on military aid to Ukraine?

“Of course,” he said in an interview this past week in Portcullis House, the parliamentary office building across the street from Big Ben. Noting that he was headed soon to New York and Washington, he said, “I’m happy to talk to whomever the American people decide they want to run the country.”

That’s a time-tested answer for any foreign politician during an American election year, especially one from a party that has held a double-digit polling lead over the governing Conservatives for 18 months. But unlike many Europeans, who regard Mr. Trump with a mix of fear and bemusement, Mr. Lammy genuinely seems to believe he can find common ground with those in Mr. Trump’s orbit.

He has held meetings with former Trump officials like Mike Pompeo , who served as secretary of state and C.I.A. director, and Robert C. O’Brien , who was Mr. Trump’s last national security adviser. And he has struck up a relationship with Senator J.D. Vance, the Ohio Republican and enthusiastic Trump convert .

Mr. Vance’s best-selling memoir, “ Hillbilly Elegy ,” he said, bore parallels to his own story, growing up with a single mother and an absent, alcoholic father, in Tottenham, where race riots convulsed the streets. Mr. Lammy, whose memoir is titled “Out of the Ashes,” said Mr. Vance’s book “reduced me to tears.”

“I said to J.D., ‘Look, we’ve got different politics, but we’re both quite strong Christians and we both share quite a tough upbringing,’” said Mr. Lammy, who would be Britain’s second Black foreign secretary after James Cleverly, a Conservative.

The challenge for Mr. Lammy is that he shares more with Mr. Obama, who was a few years ahead of him at Harvard. The two men, who met 20 years ago at a gathering for Black alumni, had dinner when Mr. Obama visited London last month. In Mr. Obama’s Washington office hangs a portrait of the former president made by Mr. Lammy’s wife, Nicola Green, an artist who chronicled his 2008 campaign.

One of Mr. Obama’s former advisers, Benjamin J. Rhodes, introduced Mr. Lammy to other Democratic lawmakers and has also become a friend. In the event of a Labour government and a second Biden administration, he predicted, “You would see a much more aligned U.S. and U.K. relationship.”

But Mr. Rhodes said Mr. Lammy’s gregarious manner and pragmatic politics would give him at least a fighting chance with a Trump administration. “I think he believes that through force of personality, he could develop relationships in that circle,” Mr. Rhodes said.

For now, Mr. Lammy is determined not to offend. Asked about Mr. Trump’s recent statement that he would tell the Russians to do “ whatever the hell they want ” to any NATO member that did not pay its fair share of the alliance’s costs, Mr. Lammy seized on the reference to burden sharing.

“Is Donald Trump right?” he said. “100 percent.”

Too many NATO countries, Mr. Lammy said, still failed to meet the alliance’s target of military spending equal to 2 percent of gross domestic product (Britain spends roughly 2.2 percent). The Labour Party has vowed to raise that to 2.5 percent, and Mr. Lammy accused the Conservatives of bleeding Britain’s armed forces down to a size they had not seen since the Napoleonic era.

“I recognize in Donald Trump an ability to use language to concentrate minds,” he said.

Other Labour veterans bear no illusions about the chemistry between a Labour government and Mr. Trump. The former president clashed with Theresa May , a Conservative prime minister, though he had better relations with Boris Johnson and praised the current prime minister, Rishi Sunak, for seeking to water down Britain’s climate goals . Mr. Cameron, years before he visited Mar-a-Lago, called Mr. Trump’s threat to ban Muslims from entering the United States “ divisive, stupid and wrong .”

“A Trump government would be very difficult for a Labour government, but it would also be difficult for a Rishi Sunak government,” said Jonathan Powell, who served as chief of staff to a Labour prime minister, Tony Blair.

With the risk of a turbulent stretch in trans-Atlantic relations, Mr. Lammy is emphasizing Britain’s own neighborhood. In a new essay in Foreign Affairs magazine that lays out a foreign policy based on what he calls “progressive realism,” he said Britain needed to focus on rebuilding its security ties with the European Union, which have withered in the aftermath of Brexit.

Mending fences with Europe, Mr. Lammy said, is necessary regardless of whether Mr. Biden or Mr. Trump wins in November because the United States is increasingly preoccupied by its rivalry with China.

“For that reason, the U.K. must play its part here in Europe,” Mr. Lammy said, adding that Labour was better placed than the Conservatives to rebuild trust because of European suspicion of Brexiteers like Mr. Johnson. “Europe is keen to turn the page. The United States is keen for the U.K. to turn the page.”

Even as their strategic priorities diverge, the United States and Britain remain lashed together in conflict zones like the Middle East. British and American warplanes jointly helped repel Iran’s aerial assault on Israel.

Britain’s position on the Israel-Gaza war mirrors that of the United States, and Labour has stayed largely in sync with the Conservatives, despite pressure from its left wing to take a harder line on Israel. Mr. Lammy described the conditions in Gaza as “hell on earth,” but he has not called for Britain to suspend arms sales to Israel, as have legal experts and some members of Parliament.

While Mr. Lammy said he was “very concerned” that Israel might be violating international law, which would trigger a suspension of arms exports, he did not want to get ahead of a judgment by the government’s lawyers.

“I’m also very conscious that I and Keir Starmer might be officeholders” within the coming weeks, Mr. Lammy said, pointing to speculation that if the Conservatives suffer dire losses in local elections in early May, Mr. Sunak might call a general election .

As he contemplated that possibility, Mr. Lammy’s thoughts came back to the United States, where he said the struggles of civil rights leaders like the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the election of Mr. Obama symbolized a bend in the moral arc toward racial justice that has transformed Britain as well.

“If I have the privilege of becoming foreign minister,” he said, “I’m very conscious that I’ll be the first — it almost makes me emotional as I say it — the first foreign secretary who is the descendant of enslaved people.”
