Depeche Mode Returns With ‘Memento Mori’ Album, World Tour

The legendary band, now a duo, says some of their new songs "can't help but reflect" the absence of longtime member Andy Fletcher.

  • By Robert Levine

Robert Levine

Depeche Mode

BERLIN — Depeche Mode will return next year with a new album, Memento Mori , and a tour that’ll launch with 10 North America arena dates, followed by more than two dozen summer stadium shows in Europe. At a press conference at the Berliner Ensemble on Tuesday (Oct. 4), band members Dave Gahan and Martin Gore said that they started working on songs during the pandemic, and that they decided to continue as an act after keyboard player and co-founder Andy Fletcher died in May .

Trending on Billboard

The album isn’t completely done – recording is finished but the songs aren’t yet mixed – and Gahan and Gore said their next stop is New York, to wrap it up. It is due out around the time the tour begins.

5 Questions With Depeche Mode Ahead of Their Rock Hall Induction in 2020

At least one of the themes seems to be death – or at least the finiteness of life – as reflected by the title. “‘Memento Mori’ means ‘remember, you must die,'” Gahan said. So, Gore followed, “live each day to the max.”

In the studio, the two missed Fletcher. “We would miss Fletch,” Gahan says, “and some of these songs can’t help but reflect that.”

One of the first questions from the enthusiastic audience of journalists, associates and at least a few super-fans concerned existential issues. Then another journalist asked if the band might do some unplugged shows. After some nervous giggles in the audience, Gahan pointed out that “we can’t really unplug because we’re an electronic band.”

Everyone laughed.

“We could,” Gore added, “try battery packs.”

Depeche Mode

Memento mori world tour 2024, olympic hall.

Depeche Mode

Please note the following  instructions from the organiser.

Only in June 2023, they thrilled their audience in a completely sold-out Olympic Stadium. A brilliant open air under the tent roof, where Martin Gore and Dave Gahan once again delivered a thrilling live performance. Only nine months after their grandiose show, Depeche Mode are now coming back to the Olympic Park - then once again for an indoor performance in the Olympic Hall on 7 March 2024.

For the "Chicago Tribune" they are "one of the most influential and visionary groups in pop music", the London "Guardian" called Dave Gahan a "theatrical marvel". And the "Süddeutsche Zeitung" found after their Munich Open Air in June 2023 that the band had "freed human existence from its heaviness with their magnificent performance".

Even more than four decades after their formation, the duo Gahan and Gore and their comrades-in-arms proved on the stadium stage that they have lost none of their fascination over the past four decades. With old classics like "Personal Jesus" and "Enjoy The Silence" as well as new songs from their latest album "Memento Mori" like "The Cosmos is Mine" or "Ghosts Again", the band delivered a gripping live performance. Now fans can look forward to another performance by the legendary band, on 7 March 2024 Depeche Mode will play the Olympic Hall for the first time since 2006 after their four open airs in 2009, 2013, 2017 and 2023. More than 36 years after their very first concert at the same venue in October 1987, the band will thus be coming to the Olympic Park for the 13th time. Just can't get enough.

Depeche Mode Expand Memento Mori Tour With 29 New Shows

Citing massive demand for the first U.S. and European legs of its 2023 tour dates , Depeche Mode added another 29 shows to its Memento Mori Tour, announcing the additions late last week. The tour now numbers a colossal 75 dates, becoming one of the biggest in the band’s long history, and one of the biggest runs for any act in 2023.

Tickets for the new Depeche Mode tour dates are on sale this week, with presales kicking off as early as Tuesday, February 21. Tickets will be on sale to the general public beginning Friday, February 24. The tour’s original sales reportedly involved sellouts at many of the initially announced shows, though it is impossible to know what percentage of the ticket inventory was and remains held-back from sale for later release.

New dates begin following the summer tour through Europe, launching with a September 21 show in Mexico City at Foro Sol. From there the group plays shows through October and November with five closing shows in December, including a pair of shows in Los Angeles – on December 10 at Kia Forum and December 15 at Crypto.com Arena. Other stops in the newly announced leg include Dallas (American Airlines Center), New York (Barclays Center and Madison Square Garden), Boston (TD Garden), Chicago (United Center), Vancouver (Rogers Arena), Las Vegas (T-Mobile Arena), and San Francisco (Chase Center).

4Wall In The News

Depeche mode: ‘memento mori’ world tour.

Depeche Mode: ‘Memento Mori’ World Tour

Depeche Mode's Memento Mori tour is currently wowing audiences with its stunning stage design, created by lighting designer Jason Baeri with the help of Anton Corbijn's creative vision. 4Wall provided lighting for the tour, helping to bring Baeri's designs to life and create a dynamic and immersive experience for fans. This article was written by Michael S. Eddy and posted on the PLSN website, which you can view here.

For the first time in five years, Depeche Mode is back out on tour supporting its most recent album-Memento Mori. The Live Nation-presented tour-also named Memento Mori-began March 23 with a limited North American run. Having been on the cutting-edge of music for decades pushing boundaries of the synth pop genre, it is no surprise that this, the 19th tour for Depeche Mode, is proving to be so popular that they're adding more North America dates for the fall after the European leg. The band is now slated to play 80 dates for this tour. Lighting Designer Jason Baeri spoke with PLSN about his dynamic designs and how they support Depeche Mode's music and audience experience on this tour.

Creative Vision The Memento Mori Tour is the first Depeche project that Baeri has worked on, but he had the benefit of working with Photographer Anton Corbijn, the creative director with the band for well over 30 years. Corbijn provided Baeri with sketches of his ideas and concepts. "I was the lighting designer for the tour and also helped with the production design," explains Baeri. "Anton is the creative director for the group, so the films that he makes for the band coincide with the image he has for the overall stage design of the plan, and then we helped him make that a reality. It started as a sketch from him and together we turned that into the show."

Centerpiece to the stage design is a 27'-tall 'M'-shaped backdrop, a large structural piece that runs video. It's designed to be a scenic piece rather than just a video screen, so it has depth and weight to it. "The whole concept started with this large structural M that Anton came up with," describes Baeri. "We were trying to support that shape and that structure with everything else. I always feel that with a video screen, it has to exist as an object. I know some people differ in that they feel like video screens should disappear or the edges don't matter. To me it's a very literal object. If it's a big M-shaped screen and a big square behind it, then we need to embrace that as the overall structure of what we're doing and play within that world."

Baeri's overhead lighting rig mimics the M structure. "It was a kind of forced perspective, reverse version of that M structure," he says. "At the peak of the M when you're looking at it from the front, it comes to a peak at the top, and then the lighting rig does the opposite of that fanning out from the top, from upstage to downstage. Then around the main screen itself, we tried to support that by embracing that big square structure of what a screen is by trying to outline it; make sure that when we had content up there that we had a frame for it, so to speak. So, the M was framed by itself, and the screen was framed by us."

Baeri continues, "Anton had these very specific, literal looks; this very literal content. There is a lot of I-Mag, that is cut brilliantly, and then they switch to these almost music video like pieces that Anton does that take you away from the fact that you're in liminal space and bring you back to a very reality-based space. That's a really cool thing to be able to work with. It's not something we get to do a lot where we're actually watching films with the music."

Much of the creative comes from Corbijn, although the band has input on the design as well. Baeri notes, saying "The band mostly does the initial creative rounds with Anton, and they had feedback from me as well, but they approved the films, and they approved the look of the show. We sent them plenty of lighting treatments and renders ahead of time that they approved and told us which parts they liked and which they didn't. They're a very relaxed group of guys and they're very direct about the look that they're going for. They were very helpful in supplying that information for us." Along with that exchange of ideas, Baeri spent a lot of time getting to understand the band and creating a variety of different looks over the course of the show.

Baeri's key gear choices for this tour supported the versatility he needed to be able to get with his design. "As I mentioned, the MegaPointe was definitely one of the feature fixtures of the show," states the designer. "It's a good toolkit fixture; a very rock and roll fixture. It's something that lends itself to being a huge sculptural light. I don't necessarily love the current wave of everything as a hybrid that is now taken over most of the fixtures. The MegaPointe is a spot fixture and it's very specifically a spot fixture with spot features and it caters to its own hard-edge and the hard-edge feature set inside of it. For me, that's a great choice for this show because it speaks one language on its own and you don't really need to worry about getting half of a good set out of it."

For his ground package, Baeri used a range of Elation Professional luminaires including the company's Artiste Monet, Artiste Mondrian, and Artiste Rembrandt lights. "The Rembrandt is something where 'everything old is new again," but most wash fixtures on the market these days are really just a PC lens with a couple of optional frosts inside. The Rembrandt is an actual wash fixture that has a soft beam of light that wraps and not just a hard edge that has a little bit of softness to it or less defined quality. It's a really great floor light fixture and it's a really great soft edge wash fixture that we had a lot of fun with. Then the Monets provided a key light for us, which is just a nice clean, beautiful beam of light. And then on top of that we had Mondrians upstage, which is just a really awesome accent light. They have that big fat lens on the front of them. They just spit this huge, real sexy backlight out of them that you don't really get out of a lot of fixtures these days."

dm tour 2023 europe

Like many designers these days, Baeri has made the transition to using remote controlled followspots for his designs. For Depeche Mode, he's using six of the Robe RoboSpots. He has found that remote followspots are changing the way he uses followspots "for the better." He further explains, "I hate the way followspots traditionally look. I hate that you have this beautiful, sculpted scene on stage and then you just throw this white circle on top of all of it. I think the ability to dynamically, not only change how that edge reads and where it can go in space, but also the ability to drive those spots into color that fits the song rather than the limited six cassette choices that you had in a traditional followspot, is a good thing. I think it's most definitely the way to go from here on out; to have a fixture that has as many choices as you make with the rest of your lighting rig."

4Wall Entertainment is the lighting vendor for the Memento Mori tour, with 4Wall's Jordan Hanson out of the UK as the Account Manager for the tour. "4Wall has been fantastic," states Baeri. "They supplied not only some great gear, but a really great team of people to take it out. Jake Jevons is the Lighting Crew Chief on it, and he and his whole team are a really fantastic crew. This is a rig that has a lot of little moving parts, and they handle it extremely well. Sarah Parker is the lighting director for the show and Joe Bay helped me program it and acted as the Associate Lighting Designer for it. I had a great team supporting me. I can't say enough about them. Joe is every bit a part of the design as I am. The show looks the way it does in large part because of the work that he contributed to it; I'm really thankful to have him on my team. And Sarah, who takes this gigantic mess of fixtures and turns it into some beautifully crafted thing every single day. I mean, she's a super big asset to the team."

Baeri feels that the design really works for Depeche Mode's tour and is happy with how it came out in the end. "I am glad that the way that we are supporting, and structurally embracing, the actual shape of the stage is something that we really tried to strive for and were able to achieve. Also, not being locked into one particular look for the show is something that we are really proud of and how we got those different looks out of the rig. But, with all that being said, it is a really classic-feeling rock 'n' roll type show. That was the backstory that we were trying to stick with the whole time. It definitely feels like something that when you see it, you are definitely like, 'yeah, this is a rock show' and not very poppy, not very overly bright, or overly keyed the entire time. We were allowed to be a little bit more dramatic because it was a little more in that world."

For Baeri, the music of Depeche Mode takes him back to his youth, and he enjoys their whole catalog. "What I like about them is that their songs span such a range of different types and different structures that you don't really have to sit there and say 'oh, it's this one sound of Depeche Mode.' It really feels like from song to song you can be in a big heavy, a 'Personal Jesus' type rock song and it's all about guitars and drums. And then you can switch over to 'Policy of Truth' and have something that's a very electronic sounding that vibrates with you a little bit more than the traditional hitting you with a hard rock song. It's also music that I grew up with. So, it's really nice to be able to listen to those tracks and relive my high school days a little bit."

With the very positive audience response to Depeche Mode being back on the road performing their fantastic catalog of music from the past four decades, it is obvious that the entire team hit the right notes with the design. No matter when you first encountered Depeche Mode, their music is a big part of many people's soundtracks of their lives. The design of the Memento Mori certainly effectively supports the band; its music and also embraces the feelings it evokes for all of its fans.

Pioneering synth-pop band Depeche Mode have sold over 100 million albums and played to over 35 million fans worldwide. Depeche Mode was formed in 1980 by Andy Fletcher, singer Dave Gahan and keyboardists Martin Gore and Vince Clarke. The band released their U.S. breakthrough in 1984 with the platinum-certified album Some Great Reward , which included iconic songs such as “Master and Servant” and the Billboard Hot 100 Top 20 hit “People Are People.” By the ’90s, Depeche Mode became one of the most popular bands of the alternative music boom. Their triple-platinum album Violator (1990) became a smash hit that spawned alternative classics such as "Personal Jesus” and "Enjoy the Silence.” Over 40 years after their formation, Depeche Mode continues to be a touring force; the band’s 2017–2018 Global Spirit Tour grossed over $202 million. They were also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2020. Following the tragic passing of Fletcher in 2022, Depeche Mode forged ahead with their 15th studio album Memento Mori in 2023 and a massive world tour, and remain as influential as ever.

Outstanding.

Seeing Depeche Mode again was on my bucket list. It was everything I hoped it would be and now seeing them again is back on the top of my bucket list! I really hope they tour again in The USA. This Venue was great also! We drove to Miami from South Carolina.

Best concert I have ever been to, I’ve seen depeche three other times and many other bands, but they were absolutely on fire this tour. A good mix of songs. Just fantastic!

Still the best band EVER!!! Thank you for the special Martin Gore solos of “Home” and “But Not Tonight” - two of my personal favorites. Depeche Mode is amazing and timeless. 🙏 🎶 🖤

If You Love Depeche You’ll love the Show

Depechemode Best Band in the Universe

There is no doubt that Depechemode concerts surpass not only my expectation but all the Devotees. There is not one concert that they did not play with all their heart ❤️and soul. Their emotion, inspiration, Devotees singing alone with the band makes us feel all so special. Dave moves makes you dream of him. If I had to make a wish, just one wish would be to meet my favorite band of the world and universe , Depeche Mode. A wish to talk to each of them and get to know them as human beings not as the Idols they are. Forever DepecheMode in my Heart ❤️

Depeche Mode does it again!

I have been going to all their concerts since the Rose Bowl Music for the Masses in 1988. This one beat my expectations, they threw a show for us to remember. I look forward to their next.

I had a great time at the Depeche Mode Concert. I enjoyed the whole concert experience. I loved every song, and the videos played in the background. The band has high energy. The concert was packed from the very young to the very old. What amazed me is how the very young knew all the lyrics to every song the band played. Any wild antics was from the fans. Some of the fans wore some very outlandish outfits. I think the band members like the style of their fans. There is lots of fan participation. You have to attend one concert to experience their talent and the excitement. You won't be sorry. I am so looking forward to the next concert. The concert goes by too fast and you wonder where the time went. The only bad thing was the concert wasn't long enough and had to end. I wanted the concert to go on forever.

I say please just try one concert. Once you attend one of their concerts, you will become a fan for life.

Absolute fantastic, we were FOS and close enough to see them Face to Face - i love that they arrange every Song a little different and so i discover more and more favorite Songs. Sound was brilliant and not to loud , stunning dance performance of Dave and we all love Martin taking the lead vocal sometimes. All over all they really support the feeling that they are bythemself full of Joy and Happiness - made us sing all the time - play my favorite Song 'A Pain i used to know' andd all what i want to hear - if i could wish one Song for the next concert it would be'The things you said' or 'Waiting for the Night' - anyhow 'never let me down (again) - is one of the heights of the Concert - you know this waving thing - with the arms ...will see them again.

Depeche Mode - Manchester Arena fri 17/11/17

First time I've seen Depeche Mode live. It won't be the last I hope. I remember them from way back when, early 80's I think, yes I'm old!! The band are amazing, sound great & look great. Dave never stops moving around the stage, wish I had half of his energy!! They performed a mix of songs but mostly new ones from SPIRIT the new album. If you haven't got it yet, why not? Go out and get it!! But then towards the end of the show out came the crowds old favourites, but still sounding fresh to this day, and there was a good old sing a long!

Yes I will definitely go to see them again in the future. Highly recommended.

Want to move to Europe? Here are all the countries where you can apply for a digital nomad visa

Across Europe, countries are capitalising on remote workers by offering digital nomad visas.

All the remote work visas currently available in Europe, including length of stay, application fees and income requirements.

Across Europe, countries are capitalising on remote work by offering digital nomad visas.

Since the pandemic, many of us have enjoyed the freedom to work from anywhere.

Recognising the potential to boost their flagging tourism industries, countries from Croatia to Spain are making it easier to gain temporary residency while working for a foreign company.

Not only does this help fill the low-season gaps in tourism-reliant destinations, it offers non-EU citizens the peace of mind and the chance to legally work remotely.

Digital nomad visas help host countries combat other problems, too, from brain drain to ageing populations.

If you’re looking to move to Europe, work remotely, and gain the right to travel in the Schengen Area, a  digital nomad visa could be just the ticket.

Here’s a comparison of the remote work visas currently - or soon to be - available in Europe, including length of stay , application fees and income requirements.

Some have been specifically designed for remote workers while others are previously existing visas that have been adapted to people who want to work while travelling.

What digital nomad visas are available in Europe?

Albania: for stunning nature and low cost of living.

Visa length: One year, with possibility to renew for up to five years

Application fee:  Based on reciprocity

Income requirement: Estimated €9,800/year

Digital nomads can apply for an Albanian residence permit that allows them to stay and work there for up to one year. Introduced at the start of 2022, the so-called 'Unique Permit' can be renewed up to five times in a row.

Remote workers must show proof of an employment contract for a company outside of the country that allows them to work remotely, as well as relevant qualifications. They must also have a local bank account, housing contract, health insurance and clean criminal record, as well as proof of funds to support themselves.

Croatia: For sunshine undamped by tax woes

Visa length: One year, with possibility to renew

Application fee: Around €60

Income requirement: Around €2,500/month

Croatia launched its one-year residence permit for digital nomads in 2021. The scheme is open to non-EU/EEA citizens working in ‘communication technology’ - either through their own company registered abroad or as a remote employee for a company outside Croatia.

Provided they don't require a tourist visa to enter Croatia, remote workers can apply for a one-year residence permit after arrival. Close family members can also apply for temporary residence.

Remote workers are currently not subject to income tax in Croatia.

  • Dubrovnik: Here’s how to escape the crowds in Europe’s most overtouristed city
  • I hiked this remote mountain pass in Albania and found unspoilt landscapes and soulful hospitality

Cyprus: For Mediterranean beaches and ancient history

Visa length: One year, with possibility to renew for two years

Application fee: €70

Income requirement:  €3,500/month

Open to non-EU nationals, Cyprus 's remote work visa launched in 2021 with a cap of 100 nomads. In 2022, the government increased this ceiling to 500 visas.

To be eligible, you must work for an employer registered outside Cyprus.

Digital nomads are permitted to bring their families with them, though these people are not permitted to work in Cyprus.

Czech Republic: For affordable living and fairytale castles

Visa length: Up to one year

Application fee: €200

Income requirement:  Must have €5,000 in your bank account

Remote workers can apply for a long-term business or freelance licence in the Czech Republic. Colloquially known as the ‘zivno’ visa (short for Zivnostenske opravneni or trade authorisation), it is intended for non-EU citizens who freelance or run their own business.

It requires ties with a company in the Czech Republic, so can be used by those intending to gain local freelance work such as teaching.

Estonia: For digital-forward infrastructure on a budget

Visa length: One year, with possibility to extend by six months

Application fee: €100

Income requirement: €4,500/month

Estonia launched its digital nomad visa in summer 2020. It lets people working remotely for companies abroad - or freelancers with clients mostly abroad - stay in Estonia for up to one year at a time. You can apply for an additional six-month visa after your initial one expires.

Applicants must have earned at least €3,500 net per month in the six months preceding their application.

If you remain in Estonia for more than half a year, you will gain tax residency and be subject to local taxes.

The country also offers ‘e-residency’, which grants remote entrepreneurs digital access to Estonia’s e-services without providing residency. This can be used to run a company online, access banking, and declare taxes in Estonia without actually living there.

  • Feeling right at home: The European countries where it's easiest to settle as an expat
  • Germany's new immigration law is making it easier for foreign workers to move there

Finland: For untouched nature in the world’s happiest country

Visa length: Six months

Application fee: €400

Income requirement: €1,220/month

Finland’s self-employment visa is open to non-EU entrepreneurs who are self-employed or run an independent business. Applicants must meet the minimum income requirement and prove they have means.

Greece: For island-hopping and year-round sun

Visa length: One year, with possibility to extend with a residence permit

Application fee: €75

Income requirement: €3,500/month

In 2022, Greece launched a scheme to allow non-EU citizens to live and work remotely in the country. To be approved, you’ll need to show you have sufficient resources of a monthly income of at least €3,500.

Digital nomads are not permitted to work or freelance for Greek companies under the scheme.

Hungary: For thermal baths and low-cost living

Visa length: One year, with possibility to extend

Application fee: €110

Income requirement: €3,000/month

Hungary's ‘White Card’ visa is open to non-EU digital nomads employed remotely outside the country. You must stay in the country for at least 90 days in a 180-day period, and will be exempt from paying tax in Hungary for the first six months.

You are not permitted to work for a Hungarian company under this scheme.

Iceland: For outdoor explorers on high incomes

Application fee: €86

Income requirement: €7,075/month

Iceland ’s remote work long-term visa is aimed at high-income individuals earning over €7,000 per month, either as employees of a foreign company or as freelancers. The visa lasts for six months and applicants will not be considered tax residents during this time.

You are not permitted to work for Icelandic employers under this visa .

  • ‘We want a vision that does not have tourism at its centre’: Venice residents protest new entry fee

Italy: For laid-back living and spectacular scenery

Application fee: €116

Income requirement:  €28,000/year

A new visa for digital nomads was signed into Italian law in March 2022 and finally became available in April 2024.

Applicants need to fulfil a range of requirements, including having health insurance and a clean criminal record. They must also be tax compliant in Italy before applying.

Latvia: For miles of forests and beautiful architecture

Visa length: One year, possibility to renew for a second year

Application free: TBC

Income requirement: At least €2,858/month

The Latvian government announced plans for a digital nomad visa in 2022. Legislation is currently undergoing modifications before it can become official.

Authorities have said, however, that after five years as a legal resident of Latvia , digital nomads can apply for citizenship.

Applicants must also be a citizen or resident of an Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) country such as the US, Canada or the UK.

Malta: For mild winters and days on the water

Visa length: One year

Application fee: €300

Income requirement: €2,700/month

Malta ’s Nomad Residence Permit is for remote workers and freelancers who work for companies outside the country. The one-year permit is open to non-EU nationals.

Originally, nomads were told they would be granted a tax exemption so long as they continued paying taxes back home. However, there have been legal complications with this promise that are currently being resolved.

Want to make Malta your more permanent home? A new Startup Residence Scheme announced in 2023 grants a three-year residence permit to third-country nationals who make an investment of at least €25,000 in the country. If the business is successful, this can be extended for a further five years and could eventually lead to long-term residency.

Montenegro: For intrepid hiking and low cost of living

Visa length: Two years, with possibility to renew for another two

Application free: €67

Income requirement:  Around €1,400/month

Montenegro announced its digital nomad visa for non EU citizens in 2021 and introduced the early stages of the scheme in 2023. However, applications aren't going to be available until sometime in 2024.

Participants can use the scheme to live in the country for up to four years. Digital nomads are eligible for tax breaks although details are still to be confirmed.

  • Spain’s digital nomad visa one year on: How are remote workers and locals getting along?
  • Spain, Romania, Cyprus: These are the best and worst countries in Europe for digital nomads

Norway: For mountain-climbing and local business

Visa length: Up to two years

Application fee: €600

Eligible non-EU digital nomads can apply for a residence permit and independent contractor visa to live and work remotely in Norway. Applicants must have at least one Norwegian client and are required to pay local taxes under the scheme.

Portugal: For rugged coastlines and wine-tasting weekends

Income requirement: €3,280/month

Portugal initially launched its digital nomad visa in October 2022, officially called the ‘residence visa for the exercise of professional activity provided remotely outside the national territory’.

It is open to non-EU citizens who are employed or self-employed by a company outside of Portugal.

The new scheme is an alternative to the existing ‘D7’ visa, which is aimed at retirees and ‘passive income’ earners.

You must show proof of health insurance of the duration of your stay. If you bring a spouse or children with you, the minimum income requirement increases or you must show a set level of savings in your bank account.

Romania: For long hikes and pocket-friendly stays

Application fee: €120

Income requirement: €3,950/month (three times Romania’s average gross salary)

Romania ’s digital nomad visa is aimed at non-EU citizens. Applicants must have health insurance, a clean criminal record and proof of income from a company outside of Romania.

In 2023, Romanian president Klaus Iohannis signed a new bill to clarify tax requirements for digital nomads . Those staying for long periods are exempt from paying income tax, social security, and social health insurance contributions.

To benefit from the scheme, foreign workers cannot exceed a stay of 183 days in the country over a period of 12 consecutive months.

Digital nomads with tax residence in another country are not required to pay tax in Romania under the scheme.

  • Spain has launched a digital nomad visa - Here's everything you need to know before you apply

Spain: For beach escapes and tax breaks

Visa length:  One year, with possibility to renew for up to five years

Application fee: Varies by country, usually around €80

Income requirement: Currently €2,334/month

Spain ’s long-awaited digital nomad visa came into force in February 2023. The scheme grants non-EU citizens the chance to live and work there for up to five years.

It is open to people who work remotely for non-Spanish companies, including both self-employed freelancers with multiple clients and workers employed by a single company.

They must be able to prove that they are qualified or experienced in their field.

Close relatives, like children and spouses, are allowed to join the visa holder in the country with proof of sufficient funds.

Tax breaks will be granted to remote workers, provided they earn below €600,000 a year. They will pay 15 per cent tax during the first four years of their stay instead of the usual 24 per cent.

Türkiye: For buzzy cities and blissful coastline

Application fee: TBC

Income requirement: €2,800/month

In March 2024, Türkiye became the latest country to launch a digital nomad visa for foreign remote workers.

The Turkish Culture and Tourism Ministry has created a dedicated website where those interested can complete the first application stages.

Those interested in Türkiye’s digital nomad visa need to be aged between 21 and 55. Applicants are accepted from most EU countries as well as the UK, USA and Canada.

Additional prerequisites include holding a university degree, having an employment or business contract and being able to prove the minimum monthly income.

G4D Tour announces expanded 2023 schedule

The G4D Tour (Golf for the Disabled Tour) today announces its 2023 global schedule, with an expanded calendar of eight tournaments in six countries.

Rasmus Lia and Juan Postigo

Launched in 2022 with an initial seven-event schedule, the G4D Tour sees the world’s leading golfers with a disability compete on the same course, the same week, as professionals on the DP World Tour.

The 2023 season will see additional uplifts to the G4D Tour, including the introduction of a season-long Order of Merit to crown the Number One player.

Each G4D Tour event is open to amateurs and professional players of all eligible impairments, men and women. For 2023, players will be able to qualify from both their ranking on the gross division of the World Ranking for Golfers with a Disability (WR4GD) and events on the European Disabled Golf Association (EDGA) Tour, ensuring an international pathway to reach the G4D Tour. The European Tour group pays the expenses of players as they travel around the world, to ensure that the Tour is open to all players regardless of their financial circumstances.

To be eligible, all players must have a World Ranking for Golfers with a Disability and an EDGA Player Pass. Since the G4D Tour launched earlier this year, applications for a World Ranking and Player Pass have reached record levels, with 20% of all passes secured in 2022 alone – showing the impact the G4D Tour is having on raising awareness and increasing participation. The DP World Tour will continue to utilise its social media channels, and relationships with global broadcasters, to showcase the G4D Tour on a range of media platforms throughout the 2023 season.

This year’s inaugural season, which had its finale at the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai, saw England’s Kipp Popert win four G4D Tour titles and regain his position as World Number One on the WR4GD. The other tournament winners were England’s Mike Browne, Italy’s Tommaso Perrino and Sweden’s Rasmus Lia. Players of ten different nationalities competed, showing the international reach of the Tour.

The Australian All Abilities Championship, starting on Friday December 2, will be the first event of the 2023 G4D Tour season, with World Number One Popert leading the field of 12 competitors teeing it up at Victoria Golf Club. The Australian All Abilities Championship forms part of a festival of golf on Australia’s world-renowned sandbelt, taking place concurrently with the ISPS HANDA Australian men’s and women’s Opens.

The tournament will be played across three rounds at Victoria Golf Club, with World Number Two Brendan Lawlor and Spaniard Juan Postigo Arce, ranked fourth on the WR4GD also competing. World Number 12 Geoff Nicholas leads the home charge, having made history in 2019 as the first amputee golfer to qualify for The Senior Open presented by Rolex at Royal Lytham & St Annes.

Speaking about the enhanced 2023 schedule Keith Pelley, Chief Executive of the European Tour group, said: “The G4D Tour has been a tremendous success since it launched earlier this year. We have seen unprecedented numbers of golfers with a disability enquire about playing on the Tour and getting a World Ranking, thanks to the ability for these inspirational players to play Tour level courses next to the best players on the DP World Tour.

“We have developed a very close relationship with EDGA and the European Tour group will continue to support the association in its focus on developing capacity within the golf industry, through a variety of education and development activities. I firmly believe that golf has the potential to be the most inclusive sport in the world and the G4D Tour is a major step in realising this ambition.”

Tony Bennett, President of EDGA, added: “The G4D Tour is the visible manifestation of EDGA’s development of golf for the disabled – a process that started 22 years ago. Since our first collaboration with the European Tour group and DP World Tour, there has been exponential growth at all levels. The G4D Tour has created greater awareness and resulted in a cascade effect with more tournaments at every level, more national federations building accessible activities, and of course, more grassroots programmes than ever before. The support that the European Tour group and DP World Tour provide to EDGA helps make all of this possible.”

Amsterdam's local government is cracking down on local over-tourism by putting a ban on new hotels, it said Wednesday .

New hotels can only be built if another closes down, and the city is urging developers to choose a site outside of the city center.

If a new hotel is built in place of an old one, it must be more modern or more sustainable. Twenty-six hotels that have already been issued permits will not be affected by the ban, the city said.

The move was triggered by Amsterdam's "Tourism in balance" policy, which was created in 2021 after a public initiative in which 30,000 residents called for more control of the tourism industry.

Under "tourism in balance," aims to limit overnight stays in hotels by tourists to 20 million a year. In 2023 tourists spent about 20.7 million nights in Amsterdam, a number that doesn't include vacation rentals, bed and breakfast stays or cruise trips. That means "the municipal executive is obliged to take action," the city says.

Amsterdam also has been attempting to curb other behaviors by tourists, including banning cannabis smoking in certain parts of the city , closing some clubs and bars earlier, placing new limits on canal cruises and converting some hotels into homes or offices.

Here and Now

I'm planning to spend $5,000 to see Taylor Swift in Europe with my kids. Our floor tickets, hotel, and flights are set to cost less than our nosebleed seats in the US did.

  • I saw Taylor Swift on the US leg of The Eras Tour, and two nosebleed seats cost us $5,000.
  • My daughter and I loved the show, so I scored us floor seats for one of Swift's Poland shows.
  • Our European trip includes three VIP Swift tickets and is set to be cheaper than our seats in the US.

Insider Today

When Taylor Swift first announced her Eras Tour , I laughed when I heard colleagues had cleared their work schedules to buy tickets.

I couldn't understand why they were looking for tickets for shows hours away. I liked a few of Swift's songs, but I wasn't a "Swiftie" and didn't understand the frenzy.

That all changed when my daughter started asking intensely for tickets . And once The Eras Tour started, it became clear that it was the concert of the century. It was also nearly impossible to get tickets.

Seeing the US tour was difficult and expensive, but the show turned me into a full-on Swiftie

I didn't want my kid to miss out on this generation-defining event, but I couldn't stomach spending $4,000 or more on the resale market for two nosebleed seats on top of travel costs to another city.

Fortunately, five cousins chipped in to buy my daughter tickets for her birthday.

My daughter, a devoted Swiftie, predictably loved every second of The Eras Tour. At first, I wasn't sure how I would get through a 3 ½-hour show by an artist I barely knew — but I left in awe of Swift's talent.

In the weeks that followed, I listened exclusively to Swift. On a trip to Nashville, I sang my heart out to Swift's songs at the Country Music Hall of Fame. I wondered whether I would be able to see her perform again, this time going all in.

Getting tickets to see Swift in Poland was easier than I expected

As soon as Swift announced international dates on her tour in June, I took the first of many steps to get tickets to one of her shows abroad. I set my sights on a show in Warsaw, Poland, for several reasons.

My children and I are Polish citizens but have never set foot in the country. I've wanted to go for years, and snagging Swift tickets would allow me to finally make the trip. I reasoned that Warsaw was unlikely to be as popular as marquee destinations like Paris. It's also a less expensive city than many other international stops on The Eras Tour.

Also, tickets for the Warsaw show were not being sold through Ticketmaster. I found the idea of not having to deal with the company that botched sales to the US leg of the tour very appealing.

A few days before tickets went on sale, I got a code for the chance to buy tickets before they became available to the rest of the public. Based on how popular presales were in the US , I knew I was unlikely to get tickets, but I set an alarm for 5 a.m. anyway.

Much to my surprise, I was able to enter the ticket-buying portal right away. I scored three VIP floor seats for the first night of Swift's Eras Tour in Warsaw for less than $1,000. My daughter, my son, and I started making friendship bracelets immediately to exchange with other concert-goers, an Eras Tour tradition.

Our trip hasn't happened yet, but I already know it'll be worth it

Although tickets to the Warsaw show were not cheap, the total cost plus our European trip is set to be about the same as or less than the two nosebleed seats I got when I saw Swift in the US.

I hope to use credit-card points to book our flights, but even if I don't, I estimate the total cost of the trip could be from $4,000 to $5,000. This isn't significantly more than my family usually spends on our annual family vacation, and I have more than a year to save.

However, unlike other family vacations, this one comes with the chance to explore our roots and see a new part of the world. I never would have guessed that Swift would be what finally got me to Poland, but it's just one more reason for me to love her.
