Where to eat, drink, shop and relax in charming LeClaire on the Mississippi River

visit american pickers iowa

This small Iowa town along the Mississippi River is known for being the birthplace of Western icon Buffalo Bill and, in the past decade, the History Channel show “American Pickers.”

LeClaire sits on the western bank of the Mississippi River just north of Bettendorf.

Take a walk down Cody Road — adorned with stereos attached to trees playing songs like “Mr. Sandman” — which runs parallel to the Mississippi River and find antique stores and gift shops, places to drink and eateries with impressive views.

Where to eat in LeClaire

Dine in a home that dates back more than a century with the Crane & Pelican Cafe , located at the Dawley House, which maintains its original chandeliers, fireplaces and pine floors. The stately brick home, built in 1851, formerly served as the residence of Daniel and Sabina Dawley and their nine children, according to the restaurant. Expect a menu of American fare including slow-roasted beef brisket, Cajun pasta — topped with blackened chicken, sirloin steak, or salmon over rigatoni noodles — pecan-crusted salmon, sandwiches such as a blanched asparagus with cream cheese served on rye, and for dessert, homemade ice cream. Stop by on Sundays for a buffet brunch from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Location: 127 S. Second St., LeClaire

Another option: If you’re looking to dine with a view, Steventon’s , located at 1399 Eagle Ridge Road, is the choice since it overlooks the Mississippi River. The fine-dining restaurant with American cuisine skews more toward surf and turf — think filet mignon, ribeye, scallops and salmon. You could make a meal of the tuna tartare tower, smoked salmon cakes or oysters, either on the half shell or baked with Parmesan cheese and Creole sauce. Sit on one of the two decks, keep warm by the firepit when the temperatures drop and order the show-stopping Greek cheese, set on fire table side with the help of a little 151 rum.

Where to catch a drink in LeClaire

Mississippi River Distilling Co. was founded in 2010 and has since expanded into Davenport. The distillery makes gin, vodka, liqueurs and whiskey, serving them in drinks at the LeClaire location, which the distillery also calls a cocktail house. Try drinks such as a honey whiskey-based lemonade, bourbon peach tea, a vodka Mississippi mule and more.

Location: 303 N. Cody Road, LeClaire

Another option: Green Tree Brewery , 309 N. Cody Road, is Mississippi River Distilling Co.’s neighbor. Like the distillery, the brewery offers great views to accompany your drinks, which include perfect-for-the-summer IPAs spiked with mango and blood orange or a hefeweizen beer named after the brewery in German, Grüner Baum.

Where to find the perfect gift in LeClaire

Aunt Hattie’s Fanciful Emporium has something for everyone, including men — you’ll get that reference once you visit. While you may find some vintage goodies, expect to discover loads more whimsical, wacky gifts that will make you chuckle, or question whether you need it, like a cookbook from rapper Snoop Dogg.

Location: 102 S. Cody Road, LeClaire

Another option: The Western-inspired boutique Cody Road Trading Post sells apparel, décor, knick knacks and more at 110 ½ N. Cody Road.

More Iowa travel: Headed to the Amana Colonies this summer? Here's where to visit from restaurants to shops.

Where to shop in LeClaire

A visit to LeClaire wouldn’t be complete without a stop at Antique Archaeology , whether you're an “American Pickers” fans or not. The store is owned by Mike Wolfe who, in the History Channel series, is accompanied by friend Frank Fritz in earlier years and now his brother Robbie Wolfe as they travel and discover fascinating finds across the country. Antique Archaeology houses items from the show and "American Pickers" merchandise from vintage motorcycles, signs and décor to apparel.

Location: 115 ½ Davenport St.

Another option: Shop for antiques inside a home over a hundred years old. Mississippi Cottage Antiques , 606 N. Cody Road, is located in a house built in 1915 that overlooks the Mississippi River. Find vintage canes, silver dollars, antique furniture, glassware and perhaps least expectedly — home-grown catnip. The two-story shop has five distinct rooms upstairs, including one dedicated to military and war items such as knives and clothing.

What to do in LeClaire

You won’t miss the Buffalo Bill Museum in part because of the Lone Star Steamer docked, enclosed and on display next to the museum. The 19 th century steamer, designated a National Historic Landmark, is the only example of a wooden-hulled boat built in traditional Western rivers fashion in America today, according to the museum. The museum is named after LeClaire-born William Cody, better known as Buffalo Bill, the American soldier, buffalo hunter and showman responsible for Buffalo Bill’s Wild West touring show. In addition to Cody, the museum also features the history of the Mississippi River and early American life and settlers.

Location: 199 N. Front St.

Another option: Step off dry land and go sight-seeing with Riverboat Twilight . Guests will travel north on the Mississippi River, passing by Rapids City and Port Byron, Illinois, as well as Princeton, Iowa. The Victorian-styled boat has outdoor decks for passengers to enjoy the views. Learn more about Mississippi River towns and their history on the hour-and-a-half trip, which departs and docks in the Port of LeClaire.

Pick through history at ‘American Pickers’ store

Explore unique items from the “American Pickers” TV show at Antique Archaeology in LeClaire, Iowa. [CR RAE]

This Iowa city of fewer than 4,000 residents is home to one of TV’s most popular shows and offers visitors a slate of things to do.

LeClaire sits along the Mississippi River and is home to Antique Archaeology, the shop of “American Pickers” on the History Channel. It is a place where visitors can pick through what the pickers have picked.

The store was once a fabrication shop, and here antiques seekers will find some of the best picks and the latest in “American Pickers” merchandise.

What is a picker? Store owner Mike Wolfe has described one as the person who picks through other collectors’ collections with the hopes of finding a couple of items to give them a new life.

Wolfe was raised close to LeClaire in Bettendorf, Iowa, and found LeClaire to be the perfect place to open Antique Archaeology.

Most of the time Wolfe and his longtime friend Frank Fritz visit small-town USA and pick through items that they find can be repurposed either by selling them in the store, to other collectors or to someone looking for a specific item. Wolfe travels more than 70,000 miles a year to, as he put it in a February interview on “CBS Sunday Morning,” “rescue America’s past.”

Due to the coronavirus, the shop is closed at this time. However, it will reopen as soon as it is safe. Visit antiquearchaeology.com for updates on hours or call 563-265-3939.

The small river town offers visitors plenty to do before or after a visit to Antique Archaeology.

Get a great view of the river and have a delicious meal at the Crane and Pelican Café. The restaurant is in the historic Dawley House, built in 1851 by riverboat captain Daniel Dawley. He worked on the Mississippi for 38 years and then became postmaster for LeClaire. Inside the historic home, visitors will find Victorian chandeliers, a metal fireplace and a curved staircase. Whether you are a history buff or just looking for a good meal, the Crane and Pelican will feed your craving.

Guests are invited to explore the second-floor office. Also available is a changing table, toys for kids and a comfortable place for nursing moms.

The restaurant is also currently closed with limited takeout. Visit craneandpelican.com for hours and updates on the dates for reopening.

After picking and having a great meal, a stroll down Cody Road is the perfect thing to do. Here you will find treasures of all kinds to take home from your exploration of LeClaire, from shops including Aunt Hattie’s Fanciful Emporium, Grasshoppers gift shop, Razzleberries Fine Gifts and LeClaire Olive Oil Co.

LeClaire is the birthplace of Buffalo Bill Cody, famed Army scout, Pony Express rider and actor. His birthplace is on Bluff Road just outside of LeClaire, and his homestead is open to visitors. This home was built in 1847 and is made of native limestone with walnut floors and trim. Visitors will see buffalo, burros and longhorn cattle still grazing on the prairie surrounding the homestead. For more information call 563-225-2981.

Want more Buffalo Bill? Visit the Buffalo Bill Museum, which houses documents and relics representing the days of the famed scout, the Mississippi River, and history of Native Americans and settlers. At the museum visitors will also find The Lone Star, a National Historic Landmark sternwheeler riverboat. For hours and pricing check out buffalobillmuseumleclaire.com.

The Original American Picker

The Original American Picker LECLAIRE, Iowa — Though some people think of pickers as mere dumpster divers, Mike Wolfe doesn’t mind. His childhood hobby spawnedan adult obsession, one that he has...

Millions of viewers tune in each week to watch Wolfe scour backyards and barns for “American Pickers,” a series he created in 2010. The show often returns to Wolfe’s roots in LeClaire, where his passion first turned profitable with the opening of Antique Archaeology. Located just off the main drag, the shop has driven the renaissance of this Mississippi River town 161 miles west of Chicago and just north of the Quad Cities.

Wolfe began picking as a kindergartner in Joliet, but his fixation with others’ junk flourished after his family’s move to Bettendorf, Iowa, when he was in the fourth grade.

“There was a junkyard down by the river in Bettendorf,” he recalled. “It was kind of a coming-of-age story like ‘Stand By Me.’ We would walk the railroad tracks all day, hang around in the junkyard, break windows in the cars and dig around in the glove boxes to find things.”

During his formative years in the 1970s, Wolfe said, “picker” was a derogatory term for “somebody who went through alleys digging through garbage and every once in a while came up with a gem.” Eventually, he discovered that people were willing to fork over money for his gems. The business was born.

Antique Archaeology began in a former machine shop that’s familiar to fans of The History Channel series. Items Wolfe buys in his cross-country travels for TV are sold either in the original shop or his second location in Nashville, Tenn., where he now lives.

Nothing gets restored, or even cleaned up, prior to sale.

“We don’t touch anything,” said Emily Soenksen, who manages the LeClaire store. “You’re lucky if we get the bird poop off it.”

Soenksen added that she is regularly asked, “Are pictures OK?” (They are.) The answer is sometimes harder when a would-be customer wonders aloud, “What is this?”

It’s sometimes hard to determine precisely what Wolfe has purchased. Soenksen had to think for a moment before telling a would-be customer that what she was holding was the sconce from an oil lamp, minus the lamp.

Much of the merchandise reflects Wolfe’s passion for road-related relics.

“The brunt of my business even prior to the show was transportation-related, and I think that’s reflected in the show itself,” he explained. “We buy a lot of advertising, a lot of motorcycle parts, car parts and sometimes (whole) cars.”

Prices in the shop vary wildly.

“We’ve got stuff that’s in there for 20 bucks and stuff that’s in there for 20 grand,” Wolfe pointed out. “We try to have something for everybody.”

That said, Wolfe stated that the vast majority of visitors aren’t even considering the purchase of one of his picks.

By Jay Jones, Special to Tribune Newspapers –  3:03 p.m. CST, February 27, 2014″Ninety percent of the people who come to my store, they don’t collect anything. They don’t want any antiques,” he said. “They just want to come because it’s their favorite show. They want to buy some merchandise, whether it be a hat, a coffee mug or a T-shirt.”

With as many as 1,000 visitors a day during warmer months, Antique Archaeology’s original shop became too small to handle the crowds. In early January, Wolfe opened a second shop next door.

“I built a building that looks like a 1930s service station,” he said. “The brick is handmade in Illinois. Each brick is different and looks very old. It has warehouse-style windows and very high ceilings with exposed iron beams.”

“We can’t just be a little antique shop anymore,” he added.

Before the Internet, LeClaire was known as an antique hunter’s paradise. But Wolfe said eBay and other such online businesses forced many of the town’s antique shops to close. The boom in tourism fueled by “American Pickers,” however, has meant a resurgence of merchants.

What’s old is new again. Just like a good antique.

Things To Do In Eastern Iowa Along I-80

There are a lot of unique things to do in Eastern Iowa along I-80. See the American Pickers store, museums, wineries, a giant truck stop, and much more!

Things To Do In Eastern Iowa

After an amazing overnight stay in Grinnell , we were continuing east on our Iowa road trip. Over the next two days we saw more of the state we were growing to love and discovered there are so many fun things to do in eastern Iowa!

Things To Do In The Amana Colonies, Iowa

Visiting the Amana Colonies is probably one of the most unique things to do in Eastern Iowa. There are seven colonies and they were founded by German immigrants back in 1855. Visiting the colonies is like stepping back in time.

Collectively the colonies have been named a National Historic Landmark. There are cute shops that sell homemade items like soaps and chocolate fudge. There are also antique shops, there’s a woolen mill, wineries, and a brewery.

Pro Tip: Get to know the over 100 Iowa Wineries !

Visiting the Amana Colonies is one of the most unique things to do in Eastern Iowa

Things To Do In Iowa City, Iowa

As you continue east looking for I-80 attractions, we recommend stopping in Iowa City. It is home to the Old Capitol Museum. The capital of Iowa was Iowa City from 1839 until 1857, when it was moved to Des Moines . Since then the capitol building has been used as a university and museum.

Inside, there are restored period rooms including State and House Chambers. For us, however, the highlight of the Old Capitol was the incredible reverse-spiral staircase.

Things to do in Iowa City include visiting the Old Capitol Museum

Another one of the unique things to do in Iowa City is to head over to the Devonian Fossil Gorge. The fossils and limestone bedrock date back almost 200 million years before the dinosaurs! There are markers that tell about the area and you’re free to walk around. We were able to spot some fossils, which we thought was really cool!

The Devonian Fossil Gorge in Iowa City

Things To Do In West Branch, Iowa

In West Branch, we recommend visiting the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and Museum. Inside, visitors will learn all about the life and accomplishments of Herbert Hoover, the 31st President of the US. Exhibits include stories about his world travels and post-presidential humanitarian work.

The Museum is located on the Hoover National Historic Site. As you walk around you will see the small cottage where Hoover was born as well as other period buildings. You can even pay your respects and visit the grave-site of Hoover and wife Lou Henry Hoover.

The Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and Museum in West Branch, Iowa

While in West Branch, we also recommend visiting Brick Arch Winery. They have great wine and delicious snacks.

Things To Do In Walcott, Iowa

Continuing east, you’ll come upon the World’s Largest Truck Stop. This I-80 truck stop is the biggest truck stop in the world! Inside, besides the normal stuff you’d find, you’ll also find: a chapel, game room, barber, dentist, chiropractor, library, movie theater, restaurant, showers, laundry, and more! It’s amazing!

The World's Largest Truck Stop in Walcott, Iowa

Just behind the truck stop, you’ll also find the Iowa 80 Trucking Museum. Inside, visitors can see over 100 trucks, dating back to the early 1900’s as well as lots of other cool memorabilia like original petroliana signs and vintage gas pumps. Admission is free, although they do appreciate donations.

Iowa 80 Trucking Museum in Walcott, Iowa

Things To Do In Davenport, Iowa

One of the top attractions in Davenport is definitely The Putnam Museum. We’d say this is kind of a mix between a science and history museum. You can learn about ancient Egypt and also get hands-on experiences with robots! They also have temporary exhibits on rotation. While we visited, they had an exhibit about the Best of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, which we really enjoyed.

Things to Do in Davenport include the Putnam Museum

There are many more things to do in Davenport, but unfortunately we didn’t have time to visit them all. We heard that the Figge Art Museum is a really great museum and that taking a tour of the Isabel Bloom Studio is pretty interesting as well.

Things To Do In LeClaire, Iowa

If you’re starting the day in LeClaire, we recommend your first stop be Antique Archaeology, the home base for the American Pickers Show on History Channel. We had no idea this shop was here, and even though we’d only watched the show a few times, we thought it’d be really awesome to see in person.

And so did a bunch of other people. We got there before the store even opened and there was already a gaggle of people waiting. So yeah, get there early. Even if you have no plans on buying anything, you’re more than welcome to take a look. There are some pretty interesting items!

Antique Archaeology in LeClaire, Iowa

Did you know Buffalo Bill was born in LeClaire, Iowa? You can learn all about him and his adventures in the Wild West at the Buffalo Bill Museum. There are also a lot exhibits showcasing the history of the area, from Native American artifacts to the Lone Star Stern Wheeler (one of the longest running wooden steamboats in the US).

Buffalo Bill Museum in LeClaire, Iowa

Just behind the museum is the mighty Mississippi River. We took a few minutes to walk along the RiverWay, where we found a small veteran’s memorial and the Scott County Freedom Rock. We also saw the Riverboat Twilight, waiting quietly to start touring again in May.

Strolling along the mighty Mississippi in Le Claire, Iowa

Pro Tip: Learn more about the original Freedom Rock in our Western Iowa post.

Although we weren’t able to tour the studio, we were able to visit the Isabel Bloom store in LeClaire. It’s obvious that Isabel Bloom was loved in the community and her artwork and sculptures touched the lives of many.

Another cute shop in LeClaire’s historic downtown is Grasshopper’s. Located inside an old historic home, the shop has antiques, gourmet food items, wine, and many other items. President Obama has even stopped by this charming store!

And don’t you dare leave LeClaire without visiting either Wide River Winery or Mississippi River Distilling Company (or both). They offer visitors some pretty delicious drinks! 😉

Where To Stay In Eastern Iowa

We recommend staying at the Holiday Inn Express LeClaire. It’s on the southern end of LeClaire, so a great location between it and Davenport. It’s also close to I-80, making it convenient if you’re continuing on to Illinois.

It is a riverfront hotel, so we were extremely happy with our balcony that looked out onto the Mississippi. We also loved the comfy bed and complimentary breakfast!

Final Thoughts On I-80 Attractions In Eastern Iowa

There are so many things to do in Eastern Iowa along I-80! We feel there’s such a great mix of historical, quirky, and sophisticated stops. We were certainly sad to be leaving Eastern Iowa, and Iowa in general. It feels like we only scratched the surface by road tripping along I-80, so next time we hope to explore Iowa’s northern and southern cities.

No problem Danny! I’m glad you enjoyed the post. And yes, Iowa is so awesome. I hope you’re able to visit one day! 🙂

We went to LeClaire to take a Twilight Riverboat overnight trip down the Mississippi. What a beautiful experience! It was so serene and relaxing! We also visited the Buffalo Bill museum. Had dinner at Bier Stube, a German restaurant right on the river. Visited Antique Archaeology. American Pickers is one of my husband’s favorite shows! We will visit Iowa again!!!

Wow Nancy, you certainly had a great time! We’ll have to be sure to stop in to Bier Stube next time! 😉

It may sound silly but I always forget about little old Iowa! I love these kinds of lists- I’m embarking on an all 50 states list and I’m going to pin this to my board for inspiration. IA isn’t too far from MI so I bet I could get in a really neat weekender trip, because that gorge looks awesome!

It’s surprising how much there is to do in Iowa (hey I didn’t even know they had any wineries at all!) You did a great job highlighting what there is to do in Eastern Iowa whether its on a road trip with the family or as a couple.

Being able to visit the biggest truck stop in the world makes Iowa a state worth looking into! I love history and it looks like there is a good amount of American history to see!

This looks like such a fun journey through Iowa! I loved the pictures. Grinnell is already on my radar but I will have to add Hoover’s gravesite, as well. Who doesn’t love a good truck stop? That one looks amazing!

I always thought the largest truck store was in Texas. Now, I know different. It’s incredible that they have a chiropractor, movie theatre, dentist, etc. Pretty impressive. I’ve actually never been to Iowa and it looks like you had great time. This article gives me a much better understanding of what to expect from Eastern Iowa.

Iowa is such a pretty state and I’ve only driven through it, never stopped to explore. This post has a ton of things that would interest me, like the wineries, history and the Amana Colonies. Thanks for sharing! Saving!

Seems a nice place to wander around!

It is Pat! We loved it! 🙂

American Picker Reveals Rare Opportunity to Own Historic Iowa Restaurant

The Faithful Pilot, a restaurant in Downtown Leclaire , Iowa , has been a staple in the town for over 30 years. This historic restaurant is located in an 1860s building, and has recently closed its doors, leaving a void in the community.

Mike Wolfe, from American Pickers , is especially broken up about the closing of one of the communities favorites spots, saying, "It's like a piece of our heart has been removed".

Mike recently took to social media with a video showing love for his home town of LeClaire and for the Faithful Pilot, where people could enjoy elevated dining experiences and now could be yours!

Why LeClaire, Iowa?

Leclaire, Iowa is located on the Mississippi River, and the town is a popular destination for tourists on the Great River Road. With a population of 300,000 within 8 miles of the town, there is a large tourism trade and a lot going on in the area.

Leclaire has a lot of retail stores, and there are three hotels in the town that pull a lot of people off I-80. The rent for this space is reasonable, and the location is perfect.

This presents an incredible opportunity for entrepreneurs, chefs, and dreamers who want to open their own restaurant.

About the Faithful Pilot

The main dining room of the Faithful Pilot, which also has a bar, is basically a turnkey operation. The kitchen is fully equipped, and downstairs there is a large space of approximately 2500 square feet, which includes a walk-in cooler and a bakery.

The original owners of the restaurant were from New York City, and they were amazed when they could buy a building so cheap in Leclaire. They opened the restaurant and lived upstairs with their three children.

This restaurant has always been a place of high energy and beauty, and it presents an incredible opportunity for anyone who wants to live in a small community and make a difference.

The Faithful Pilot is waiting for the right entrepreneur to come and take advantage of this incredible opportunity..

AMERICAN PICKERS: Where is the Famous Store Located?

By: Author The Drivin' & Vibin' Team

Posted on January 9, 2024

Have you heard of the American Pickers? Did you know that they have a store?

In our opinion, it’s a great road trip for fans of the show, and anyone who loves great vintage decor.

Find out more about the American Pickers, their store, and what you can do nearby.

Let’s get started!

About the American Pickers

American Pickers is the name of a History Channel original series following antique and collectible pickers. The stars of the show typically find their catches in run-down barns, buried in garages, and sometimes in homes of hoarders.

The pickers then take these items from junk to treasure.

The series premiered on January 18, 2010, with 3.1 million viewers.

Where Is the American Pickers Store?

The American Pickers have an online store that primarily sells branded merchandise and souvenirs. They sell their finds in brick-and-mortar stores called Antique Archaeology in Iowa and Tennessee.

The original Antique Archaeology store opened in 2000 in the historic Mississippi River town of LeClaire, Iowa. It’s located in a two-story former fabrication shop.

A second location opened up in 2011 in Nashville, Tennessee. It’s located in the old Marathon Automobile car factory which dates from the early 1900s (Marathon Village.)

LeClaire location : 115 1/2 Davenport St, LeClaire, IA 52753

Nashville location : 1300 Clinton St. Ste 130, Nashville, TN 37203

Who Are the Stars of American Pickers?

Mike Wolfe created American Pickers. He began picking when he was 8-years-old. Wolfe is often on the road searching for and finding rare valuables in the most unexpected barns, attics, and sheds. He owns Antique Archaeology stores where he sells the antiques he finds.

Frank Fritz was a co-host on American Pickers from 2010 to 2020. Fritz’s favorite finds were antique toys, oil cans, vintage Hondas, and peanut-related items. In 2020, Fritz left the show after he had back surgery and the pandemic hit. According to an article in Country Living, it also seems that he had a falling out with Mike Wolfe.

Danielle Colby and Robbie Wolfe also appear on American Pickers. Colby, Wolfe’s sister, is the shop manager overseeing the stores in Iowa and Nashville. Robbie Wolf is Mike Wolfe’s brother, who’s been picking since age 8.

What Else is LeClaire, Iowa, Famous For?

LeClaire is famous for being the home of American Pickers. But it’s also the birthplace of Buffalo Bill, born William Frederick Cody. You can tour the 1847 house that Buffalo Bill’s father built just outside LeClaire.

Other Things To Do Near the American Pickers Store

While you’re in LeClaire, make sure to check out the Buffalo Bill Museum. Then, enjoy a cruise along the Mississippi River. Both attractions are less than half a mile from the American Pickers store.

Buffalo Bill Museum

The Buffalo Bill Museum was established in 1957. It features exhibits about the Mississippi River, Native Americans from the area, local history, and of course, Buffalo Bill.

One of the more unexpected displays in the museum is The Loan Star Stern Wheeler. This is a wooden-hulled steamboat constructed in 1869. The boat is inside, and you’re allowed to board and look around.

Keep in mind that this is a relatively small local museum, not the Smithsonian.

Take a Cruise

LeClaire sits right on the Mississippi River, so why not take a riverboat cruise?! Board The Riverboat Twilight for a 1.5-hour sightseeing cruise while passing Pt Byron, Princeton, and Cordova, river towns in Illinois.

If you’re interested in longer riverboat tours, The Riverboat Twilight also offers 1-day and 2-day cruises. However, the longer cruises don’t launch in LeClaire, but in Dubuque, almost 1.5 hours away.

This Is What Happens To American Pickers' Finds After The Show

American Pickers

One person's trash is another's treasure. That's the basic premise behind American Pickers , on which longtime friends Mike Wolfe and Frank Fritz travel the country looking for the perfect "pick," which could be anything from a rusty old sign to a broken-down car. If it's vintage or antique and has resale value, the American Pickers duo is all over it.

The hit History series has been airing since 2010, during which time Wolfe and Fritz, along with their assistant Danielle Colby , have turned rummaging for junk into a booming business. But just where do they peddle their wares after pulling them out of the proverbial junkyard?

While Wolfe and Fritz sometimes turn around and sell directly to collectors and buyers who have come to them looking for specific pieces, many of the picks wind up elsewhere. This is what happens to American Pickers ' finds after the show.

Mike Wolfe owns a store called Antique Archeology

With two locations — one in LeClaire, Iowa, and the other in Nashville, Tennessee — Wolfe's Antique Archeology store is a place where visitors can pick through what the pickers have picked.

Yes, items seen on American Pickers wind up in Wolfe's store, which is a half-shop, half-museum that's packed with vintage and antique finds, unusual collectibles, and unique home décor — all handpicked by Wolfe and his team. Chances are you'll spot something you recognize from the show. But while many things are for sale, some are for display only, like the 1942 Harley Von Dutch motorcycle and Evel Knievel outfit that fans line up to take pictures with.

Of course, there are plenty of things inside Antique Archeology that haven't appeared on American Pickers , but that doesn't mean they don't have their own unique story. "In my experience, the best pieces are sometimes in the places you would least expect them to be found," Wolfe told  House Beautiful .

So if you ever make it to Antique Archeology, be sure to take your time looking around. You just might find your own perfect pick à la  American Pickers .

Buying items from Frank Fritz is a bit of a mystery

Where Fritz sells his American Pickers finds isn't as straightforward as it is with Wolfe, and it may be hard for the average person to track an item down that they're interested in. One thing is for sure: Fritz has nothing to do with Wolfe's Antique Archeology stores.

A publicist for History once explained to the Star Tribune , "They each run their own business, and they sell the items you see them purchasing on the show separately. Mike is the sole owner of Antique Archaeology. Frank sells his items via his website at www.frankfritzfinds.com." However, that site seems to be shut down as of 2020.

Now, there is a brick-and-mortar store in Savanna, Illinois called Frank Fritz Finds ... but the American Pickers star has very little to do with it. Apparently, Fritz and the owner of the store are friends and have some sort of agreement about the name and function of the store — just don't hold your breath that you're going to bump into Fritz there or see many items that were directly picked on American Pickers .

Danielle Colby has a side-hustle selling burlesque items

Colby is best known as Wolfe and Fritz's assistant who's often seen running the American Pickers office inside of the flagship Antique Archeology store in LeClaire, Iowa. On recent seasons of the show, though, Colby has also starting picking — and selling.

Her main focus is on vintage costumes and burlesque items , as she herself is a burlesque dancer who goes by the stage name  Dannie Diesel . On American Pickers , she's often on the hunt for items worn by dancers and actresses back in the 1800s. It's a very niche market, making any find a true treasure and a huge thrill for Colby. One of her greatest picks has been a banana skirt believed to have belonged to the legendary Josephine Baker.

Some of the items Colby finds wind up on her online boutique called 4 Miles 2 Memphis, which can be found on Etsy . She once even owned a brick-and-mortar shop of the same name, with locations in both LeClaire and Chicago; unfortunately, they're now closed.

Wolfe, Fritz, and Colby keep some stuff for themselves and their own personal collection

As you can imagine, the American Pickers cast not only pick but also collect. Wolfe, Fritz, and Colby surely each have quite a collection of items they've picked on screen and off, but all three have a niche they hone in on.

Wolfe stockpiles bikes of any shape, size, and condition — he even has his own bike store, Trek Bicycle Shop, about 40 minutes south of Nashville, where he calls home. The two-wheeled, pedal-driven recreational vehicles are a lifelong obsession for Wolfe , whose very first pick was when he pulled one out of the trash as a kid in Bettendorf, Iowa. The rest, as they say, is American Pickers history. He's also amassed a small collection of vintage kids' cowboy boots , which are on display in his daughter's room.

Meanwhile, Fritz goes gaga over clocks — wall clocks, grandfather clocks, cuckoo clocks, you name it — and Colby often incorporates her vintage costume and accessory finds into her off-screen burlesque routines and pinup posters.

Despite the obviously personal picks, viewers have yet to see any of the American Pickers cast's home collections on the show.

Wolfe shows off some of his American Pickers finds at his short-term rental property

In addition to starring on American Pickers and running his own retail business, Wolfe also dabbles in real estate. He often buys and renovates historic buildings in small towns to help boost local economies. A building Wolfe bought in Columbia, Tennessee not only houses his bike shop, but also a short-term, Airbnb-type rental property called Two Lanes Guest House . The space is decorated with such picks as vintage signs, musical instruments, and, of course, bicycles.

"For the past 30 years, selling to designers and decorators has been a major part of my business," Wolfe has said of the space (via  Antique Archaeology ) .  "This is the first time that I've been able to utilize that experience for other people to enjoy. I'm on the road six months out of the year. I check-in to a lot of hotels and Airbnbs, so I understand what travelers need when they're looking to relax after a long day."

A few American Pickers' finds are on exhibit and in museums

Occasionally, Wolfe and Fritz visit small-town museums on American Pickers , including a makeshift wax museum in Georgia and the National Motorcycle Museum in Iowa, and sometimes, the pickers even show off their wares in such places.

In 2017, Wolfe announced that some of his American Pickers finds were going to be in a traveling history exhibit. Called History on the Move , the exhibit traveled around the state of Iowa in a custom-built, 300-square-foot Winnebago for nearly two years. Wolfe is also supporting the traveling exhibit Iowa History 101: People and Places, which will also travel around the state for two years.

Some American Pickers artifacts, including a teepee owned by the Italian actor known as "Iron Eyes" Cody, are on display at the LeClaire Buffalo Bill Museum. And Wolfe and Fritz have even helped people on American Pickers sell directly to museums — such as on season 14, when Wolfe connected a widow with the National Motorcycle Museum to sell her late husband's motorcycle and memorabilia.

‘American Pickers’ coming to Missouri this June in search for hidden gems

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

MISSOURI – You’ve likely seen the “ American Pickers ” on TV. Before too long, they’ll visit Missouri in search of rare valuables, collections, and antiques.

The well-known antique hunters will  make their way to Missouri this June . They’re looking to pick from homes, garages, and large private storage places around the Show Me State.

“American Pickers”  debuted in 2010 on The History Channel with Mike Wolfe, Frank Fritz and Danielle Coby leading operations for Antique Archaeology in Iowa. The show is currently in its 25th season, traveling around the United States to find rare artifacts and highlight their historical or cultural impact.

Driver arrested after blowing past Franklin County school bus, nearly hitting children

More than a decade later, Mike and his brother Robbie continue to search for hidden treasures. They will be visiting Missouri, Kansas and Arkansas at various points in June, looking for “junkie, historical and one-of-a-kind hidden treasures,” in their words.

Keep in mind, the pickers only buy from people’s private collections, not items already in retail stores, flea markets or public settings.

If you have a collection or know someone with a collection that might qualify for the pickers, contact their main phone line at 646-493-2184 or email [email protected]. Prospective sellers will need to include their full name, city and state, contact information, and a brief description of their collection of items.

AMERICAN Pickers alum Frank Fritz's judge presiding over his conservatorship case has approved annual reports regarding the star's health and financial records, The U.S. Sun can exclusively reveal.

Frank , 59, was  placed under conservatorship  after he suffered a severe stroke on July 14, 2022.

American Pickers ex-star Frank Fritz's conservatorship's annual report has been approved

At an April 4, 2024, Iowa court hearing, Frank's judge reviewed the annual report and went over the American Pickers star's inventory of assets.

The U.S. Sun can exclusively reveal the judge overseeing the conservatorship has approved the conservator and guardian's latest annual report, according to court records.

A source previously told The U.S. Sun that Frank's conservator and guardian oversee his nearly $6 million fortune as he continues to recover from his health complications.

However, the conservator and guardian have risked being removed from the conservatorship nearly twice after failing to file the annual reports by the deadlines .

Most recently, Frank's guardian Chris Davis, or his conservator Midwest One Bank, failed to file an annual report due on November 12, 2023.

Both Chris and Midwest One Bank are in the clear again.

FRANK'S CONSERVATORSHIP

Frank’s friends  filed the emergency appointment of a temporary guardian and conservator on August 18, 2022.

“Because of his stroke, Mr. Fritz’s decision-making capacity is so impaired that he is unable to care for his own safety or to provide for necessities such as food, shelter, clothing, or medical care without which physical injury or illness may occur," The U.S. Sun reported at the time of the filing.

“Mr. Fritz’s decision making capacity is so impaired that he is unable to make, communicate, or carry out important decisions concerning his own financial affairs," the court documents declared.

MidWestOne Bank was appointed as the conservator to handle Frank's financials.

The Petitioner requested his “longtime friend,” Chris - who “has been assisting him in decision-making since the stroke” - be his guardian.

PRICEY RECOVERY

MidWestOne Bank filed an Initial Plan that revealed  Frank’s monthly expenses as he continues to be on the mend from his health complications.

Frank spends  $28,292 a month on expenses and the majority of his budget totals $22,832 spent on “in-home health care.”

His annual healthcare total is $273,984 and despite Frank no longer receiving an income from American Pickers since leaving the show, an insider revealed it shouldn't impose a financial burden on the star.

The source claimed, “He has his store in Savannah,  Illinois - he sells there [and] he has a huge farm with all his things."

“He has $1 million worth of stuff he can sell [and] He’s set," the insider asserted.

The source claimed Frank owns 40  motorcycles  and four cars, most of which are “for sale.”

ON THE MEND

Frank has  been in and out of rehabilitation  since September 6, 2022, when he was released from the hospital.

When Frank is home from the rehabilitation center, his Iowa farmhouse has ramps and handles installed .

His guardian will assist Frank with his Crohn's disease treatment, continued physical therapy, grocery shopping, cooking, and “getting Frank to any activity he feels up to," according to court papers.

Frank  bought his home  for $130,000 on May 14, 2010.

The 1,660-square-foot farmhouse sits on 0.79 acres of land and features two bedrooms and one bathroom.

The home boasts a basement, barn, shed, and three garages.

Frank purchased the adjoining property for $25,000 on 0.34 acres of land in 2013.

'American Pickers' will return to Missouri. Here's how to try to get on the show

visit american pickers iowa

"American Pickers" is returning to Missouri and the antique-hunting television hosts are on the lookout for rare items and unforgettable characters.

Aired on The History Channel, "American Pickers" is a documentary series that follows Mike Wolfe, Danielle Colby, Robbie Wolfe and Jersey Jon, "picking" through valuable antiques across the country. The 25-season series has been on air since 2010.

The production of "American Pickers" is visiting Missouri in June and is looking for collectors who are interested in being featured on the show. To inquire, collectors should contact the production team by phone at 646-493-2184 or by email at [email protected]. Collectors should be prepared to share their full name, city and state, contact information and a brief description of their collection. Only private collections will be considered for the series, not stores, malls, flea markets, museums, auctions or other businesses open to the public.

What happened to Frank Fritz?

For long-time audiences of "American Pickers," it may come as a surprise that co-host Frank Fritz is no longer a part of the series. In July 2022, Fritz suffered a stroke and was temporarily placed under guardianship, according to the Des Moines Register.

In November 2023, the Register published a story about Fritz's first public appearance since his stroke , enjoying a meal at a pub with friends in the Illinois Quad Cities. There has been no mention of a potential return to the series for Fritz.
