  • Fitness Center: There are restrictions on the number of people allowed in fitness centers at the same time.
  • Animation: Capacity at animation programs is limited to ensure social distancing.
  • Written Information: During check in, guests receive written information about Covid-19 safety measures and rules in the hotel.
  • Payment:  Online payment and credit card payment are preferred over cash payment.

Body temperature controls and biometric facial identification are performed daily on hotel employees. All measurements are recorded.

  • Kitchen Hygiene:  A detailed plan for kitchen hygiene must be followed. It includes items such as taking daily samples of the food, a special cleaning protocol, and monitoring food safety requirements.
  • Suspected COVID-19 Cases: In the event that guests are diagnosed, show symptoms, or are suspected of having COVID-19, a health authority mandated isolation protocol and contingency plan will be implemented. These include placing guests in an isolation room at the hotel. Hotel staff are trained to handle such emergencies.

These are the most important safety measures that Safe Tourism Certified Hotels implement and that concern hotel guests.  A detailed checklist with all regulations can be found here .

Türkiye Develops a National Sustainable Tourism Program with the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC)

Türkiye develops a national sustainable tourism program with the global sustainable tourism council (gstc)..

Türkiye Tourism Promotion and Development Agency (TGA) has signed a collaboration agreement with the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC). The signing of the agreement marks an exemplary step toward sustainability as Türkiye (Turkey) becomes the first government in the world to develop a mandatory national program with the GSTC. Thanks to the new program, the Turkish tourism industry will accelerate its global sustainability practices.

The Turkish tourism industry will be restructured with the 3-year agreement signed with the GSTC, which manages the global standards in sustainable tourism, known as the GSTC Criteria . In the first stage of the agreement, which Türkiye signed as a government with the utmost gravity towards sustainability, the national program criteria will be determined and inspection firms will receive training. The first stage of the program will become operational in 2023. The second stage will be carried out gradually in 2025. The program is planned to be concluded by 2030, when all international standards will be met.

Bringing Türkiye to the forefront in sustainable tourism, the agreement will also help achieve the goals of The Paris Agreement, signed by Türkiye at the end of last year. As of 2022, Türkiye launched a transformation towards sustainability in the tourism industry and the collaboration with GSTC will highlight the country as a strong competitor in the international arena, while helping Türkiye catch up with international tourism trends.

Türkiye has taken an extensive series of measures with regards to transportation, accommodation, food and beverage, and congress facilities as well as the well-being and health conditions of passengers/guests and employees with the Safe Tourism Certification Program, which was implemented in 2020 and the first of its kind in the world. Nearly 12,000 facilities have been granted the Safe Tourism Certification so far. Within the scope of the program, the tourism industry, especially the accommodation facilities, will be subjected to both safe and sustainable standards. As of April 2022, accommodation facilities will gradually start to implement sustainable practices.

Türkiye Tourism Promotion and Development Agency (TGA) stated that TGA is very aware of the need for a transformation towards sustainability within the tourism sector as Türkiye is steeped in nature and traditional heritage, and the protection of our environment is of utmost importance. “Thanks to our work with GSTC, our visitors will have the chance to enjoy a responsible holiday in Türkiye, and our industry and partners will have the necessary tools to achieve responsible tourism.”

“TGA has impressed us very much with their plans for a highly comprehensive approach to moving Türkiye’s tourism sector to more sustainable forms. As such, we’re delighted to support their systematic approach with our standards and programs,” says Randy Durband, GSTC CEO.

About the GSTC

The Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) establishes and manages global sustainable standards, known as the GSTC Criteria. There are two sets: Destination Criteria for public policy-makers and destination managers, and Industry Criteria for hotels and tour operators. These are the guiding principles and minimum requirements that any tourism business or destination should aspire to reach in order to protect and sustain the world’s natural and cultural resources, while ensuring tourism meets its potential as a tool for conservation and poverty alleviation.

The GSTC Criteria form the foundation for Accreditation of Certification Bodies that certify hotels/accommodations, tour operators, and destinations as having sustainable policies and practices in place. GSTC does not directly certify any products or services; but it accredits those that do. The GSTC is an independent and neutral USA-registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization that represents a diverse and global membership , including national and provincial governments, leading travel companies, hotels, tour operators, NGO’s, individuals and communities – all striving to achieve best practices in sustainable tourism.

Turkey Announces Safe Certification Programme as Tourism Resumes

  • Facebook Messenger

Turkey tourism

The Ministry of Culture and Tourism in Turkey has announced to launch a safe tourism certification programme as the country restarts its 2020 tourism in summer season.

Implemented in partnership with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the programme covers a broad range of safety measures.

The certificate verifies the execution of high levels of health and hygiene requirements at airline companies, airports (and other transport stations) and accommodation outlets, as well as food and refreshment facilities.

Mehmet Nuri Ersoy, Minister of Culture and Tourism, Turkey, stated, “Turkey has been a role model for the world during the COVID-19 pandemic, thanks to its well-established health system and treatment methods.”

“The launch of our safe tourism certification programme further demonstrates that Turkey will take a pioneering role in terms of directing the normalisation of tourism.”

“Global quarantine measures have caused unique developments all around the world, however these measures are getting more flexible and the tourism sector itself plays a vital role in helping return to normal processes”, Esroy added.

“In our culture, it is extremely important to care for our guests, meaning that we are dedicated to providing healthy and safe tourism for everyone.”

He concluded with, “Our new certification programme ensures that tourists can enjoy holidays in Turkey in a safe and hygienic manner and feel comfortable for the duration of their visit”.

The safe tourism certification programme follows the announcement from the beginning of March that British residents travelling to Turkey for leisure or business purposes will now be able to travel without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period.

This summer will be the first season without visa requirements for British visitors.

Turkey to welcome foreign travelers with 'safe tourism'

  • June 10 2020 16:15:38

ISTANBUL- Anadolu Agency

Turkey to welcome foreign travelers with safe tourism

Domestic tourism in Turkey has begun as it returns to "new normal," and the country is revving up efforts to gradually reopen to international travelers. In this regard, hotels have started to design their facilities, including buffets, lobbies and pools, to maintain social distancing.

A safe tourism certification program has also been introduced to ensure if airlines, airports and other transportation facilities, accommodations and food venues are fulfilling the set hygiene standards.

Hotels and restaurants are submitting their applications to obtain the certificate based on 150 control points.

According to Müberra Eresin, the head of the Turkish Tourist Hotels and Investors Association (TÜROB), Turkey's certification program is one of the most comprehensive in the world.

"We will provide 25% discount to our members and 15% to municipal certified hotels within the framework of our agreement with RoyalCert. It is also valuable to attract tourists from around the world, especially from Europe, to make global audits," she said.

RoyalCert International Registrars, a Germany-based, independent assessment and certification body, has been authorized to issue these certificates.

The CEO of RoyalCert Turkey, Alphan Namlı, said the company audits businesses on 150 criteria, of which 12 are related with food, and 15 with accommodation facilities.

Pointing to the detailed inspection from the entrance of the hotel to the emergency exit, from rooms to the kitchens, and from halls to the pools, Namlı said the certificates will be hung [at reception or in the lobby] such that all customers could see, and find out further details through a QR code.

"For the first time in Turkey, we will audit hotels and restaurants according to criteria similar to NASA's health and hygiene standards," he said.

The Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point is a systematic preventive approach to food safety from biological, chemical, physical, and radiological hazards in production processes that can cause the finished product to be unsafe. It outlines measures to reduce these risks to a safe level.  Many competing countries will follow Turkey in this regard, he added.

Turkey’s Safe Tourism Certified

As one of the first countries to launch “Safe Tourism Certification” Program in the world, Turkey received thousands of applications from hotels, restaurants and transportation companies upon the launch of the program and the number of certified facilities is now over 2,000.  It is expected for the number of certified facilities to exponentially increase as the certification program has become mandatory for accommodation facilities with a capacity of 50 beds or more.

Noting that most facilities in the holiday resorts particularly in the Mediterranean and Aegean regions have received “Safe Tourism Certificate” with the start of the summer season, Minister of Culture and Tourism Mehmet Nuri Ersoy said that the number of certified facilities and transportation companies increase exponentially and certification process still continues.

Mr. Ersoy added, “Safe Tourism Program which was launched with the goal to host our international guests with our world-renowned Turkish hospitality in the upcoming period, continues successfully. While tourists coming to our country from many different countries enjoy their holidays in Turkey safely, we continue conducting inspection at our facilities incessantly. Our guests who wish to spend their holidays in Turkey can feel at ease knowing that we have thought of every single detail and taken all necessary precautions for them, and we are fastidiously inspecting all practices in the field.”

Pointing out that Safe Tourism Certification Program covers the entire industry, Mr. Ersoy added, “A myriad of choices from 5-star hotels to boutique hotels, from yachts to gulets, from local transfer vehicles to restaurants serving the most exquisite delicacies from Turkish and world cuisines await our guests who prefer facilities and companies with Safe Tourism Certificate.”

Turkey offers special travel insurance packages for international tourists

Mr. Ersoy noted that the special travel insurance package exclusively designed for tourists visiting Turkey to cover COVID-19 related expenses, is yet another assurance for guests visiting our country. The travel insurance policies can be purchased from contracted airlines, various sales points/kiosks inside the airport and online channels. The insurance policies cover all healthcare costs up to EUR 3,000 for a premium fee of EUR 15, EUR 5,000 for a premium fee of EUR 19 and EUR 7,000 for a premium fee of EUR 21.

Tourists can also get tested for COVID-19 at the healthcare center located in the facility they are staying.   Accommodation facilities with 50 rooms and more which are obliged to have Safe Tourism Certification, also offer guests the opportunity to get tested for COVID-19 upon request. In the event that a guest at the accommodation tests positive for COVID-19 during his/her stay, the certification program also allows that guest and his/her accompanying family members/friends to be isolated in rooms located on the floor/ the block allocated for isolated guests throughout their reservation period.

Furthermore, public health laboratories authorized to conduct tests as well as major airports in cities including Antalya, Izmir, Dalaman and Bodrum offer PCR tests for guests departing from or arriving at Turkey to get a PCR test. Tourists can spend their holiday with utter ease of mind in 2.414 certified facilities across Turkey.

Thanks to the measures taken as part of “Safe Tourism” program as well as the initiatives taken in addition to the program, travel corridors continue to be reopened with many countries, including primarily with UK, Germany and Russia.

certificate of safe tourism turkey

One of the options for those who want to have a secluded vacation during the coronavirus period is a vacation on a boat.

The issuance of the “Safe Tourism Certificate” for tourist boats began, and with the certificate, the demand for yachts and boats increased.

It also gave the inclusion of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of marine tourism vehicles and employees in the “Safe Tourism Certificate”.

The “Priority Vaccination Program for Tourism Employees” is “hope for tour operators and boat owners who have been waiting for the season to get active on the Blue Journey.”

Tour boat owners, which is one of the indispensable activities in the summer months, have also begun to provide safe tourism opportunities.

In the face of the coronavirus epidemic of tourists who set their vacation route as a boat vacation, this situation has increased the preference of vacationers for boat and yacht vacations.

A certificate of safe tourism is also granted to tourist boats

Those who want to go on a blue cruise require a certificate of safe tourism from boat owners.

The director of the accreditation company Serkan Ceylan said that when the boats receive the “health tourism certificate”, their customers increase.

Those wishing to have a secluded vacation during the coronavirus period have turned to approved tourist boats, and this situation has allowed boat owners to take even stricter precautions.

Masks and distance rules on boats are also checked without warning

Mustafa Kaplan, director of boat operations, said Turkish customers are very keen on this problem.

“Turkish customers in particular are very interested in this problem. They definitely want this in reservations, and they want them to be safer. With a safe tourism certificate, our customers’ growth was really greater.”

Inspections of tourist boats are also carried out strictly, and by attending the tours as clients, the inspectors check compliance with the standards.

Safe Tourism Certificate Program: How Turkey is Handling Tourism, Reports Croatian Correspondent

Total Croatia News

June 29, 2020

certificate of safe tourism turkey

June 29, 2020 – How are other tourism countries preparing for the season in the corona era? We are delighted to welcome Turkey-based correspondent Maja Kuzmanovic to TCN, starting with a really interesting look at the Turkish Safe Tourism Certificate Program.

Is safe tourism possible during a global pandemic? This question is bothering Mediterranean countries who are trying to save at least part of the 2020 summer season.

In the case of Croatia, which opened to tourism as early as mid-May, many details of the COVID-19 virus protocol (hereinafter the coronavirus) more than a month after the opening of the borders are still not clearly defined. While Croatian tourist cities are losing their nerves and renters are in a dilemma whether to open their apartments to foreign guests, Turkey has introduced a “Safe Tourism Certification Program”. The introduction of this program began in early May, two months before the country opened to tourism.

hygiene team.JPG

The certificate of safe tourism is a sort of HACCP for the prevention of the spread of coronavirus, it is based on 132 health and hygiene criteria and it also includes employee education.

İstanbul Havalimanı Önlemler2.jpg

The program embraces all facilities that provide accommodation and transportation, as well as archeological parks, museums and entertainment venues.

thermal camera.jpg

Thus, a special part of the program refers to airports, airlines, highways, tourist facilities and occasional transport companies that provide transfer and transport services for tourist tours. Passengers encounter the new protocol upon arrival at the airport where their temperature is measured by thermal cameras, and if it is higher than 37.8 C or there are some other symptoms, they undergo a free of charge coronavirus test.

İstanbul Havalimanı Önlemler1.jpg

If the test result is negative, passengers continue their journey. In case of a positive result, guests are sent to the hospital where, depending on the severity of the disease, they stay for treatment or are accommodated in a hotel. All hotels are required to provide a special section of the facility for guests infected with coronavirus and for those in quarantine. They are also required to allow sick guests to stay at the hotel’s expense until complete recovery.

İstanbul Havalimanı Önlemler4.jpg

Treatment of foreign guests is free of charge and the costs are covered by the state of Turkey. From July 1st, Turkey is introducing the “COVID-19 tourist protection insurance” which will be available for purchase online, at travel agencies and airports. There will be three packages at the price of € 15, € 19 and € 23, which cover treatment costs in the amount of € 3,000, € 5,000 and € 7,000. According to Turkish statistics, the cost of treating a seriously ill patient with coronavirus averages € 4,000.

smart_helmet.jpeg

In order to reduce the number of visitors, only those presenting an airline ticket and with a mask on their face can enter the airport. Special attention is paid to the physical distance of 1.5 m and the signs with the direction of movement are placed everywhere, both on the escalators and in the elevators. Also, sitting in the waiting rooms, except for the disabled, is forbidden. Disinfectant kiosks can be found at every turn, and passengers are constantly warned about the rules. Upon entering the aircraft, packages with personal protective equipment (PPE) are distributed, and similar is done in the hotels too. Thermal cameras are also located at the hotel’s entrances while guests on arrival fill out a form with questions about their health and movement in the last 14 days.

restaurant.jpg

Self-service in the hotel restaurants is no longer available, and the food counters and servers are separated by strips from the guests. Masks are mandatory, and even beach guards wear them. Rooms must be disinfected daily and 12 hours must elapse between the departure and arrival of guests. Tourist buses are filled with 50% of the capacity, ie every other seat, and before entering the vehicle the body temperature is measured, as well as at the entrance to the archeological parks, shopping malls and pedestrian zones.

press conference ministries .jpg

The body temperature of the author of this article was also measured upon returning from the toilet during the break of the concert which was held on June 20 on the occasion of the promotion of the certificate of safe tourism in the ancient theater in Aspendos, near Antalya. – “This is the worst crisis that has ever hit tourism, and we must all adapt to the new normal.” The program we implement requires significant investments, but offers maximum possible protection. In the process of normalization of life, one of our key points is tourism. “ – Turkish Minister of Culture and Tourism Mehmet Nuri Ersoy stated at the press conference in Antalya.

pressica.antalija.jpeg

The first official case of coronavirus in Turkey was registered on March 11 2020, schools and universities were closed immediately, and within the next two weeks normal life stopped. Traffic between cities was cut off, borders were closed and air traffic was stopped. A partial lockdown was introduced with the purpose of saving human lives and partly the economy, exempting only the working population from these measures. For citizens aged 65 and over and for the chronically ill – the most vulnerable part of the population, as well as for those under the age of 20, the curfew was imposed until mid-June. Weekends and holidays curfews for the entire population were regularly imposed in all major cities until June 1, so the Turkish people spent even the Ramadan Eid holidays in their homes.

Antalya airport.jpg

Turkey, with 197,239 cases, is the 14th country in the world in terms of confirmed cases of coronavirus, of which 85 percent have been cured, with 5097 deaths (statistics for 28.06.2020). Wearing masks is mandatory indoors and on public transport, and in the cities of Istanbul, Ankara and Bursa outdoors as well. The fines for not wearing masks and violating the quarantine and curfews go up to € 700. While the city of Istanbul, with the population of 15.5 million, accounts for about 60% of coronavirus cases, a significantly smaller number of patients have been reported in tourist centers in southern Turkey.

Lara beach_Antalya.jpg

Thus, in Antalya (population 2.4 million), which accounts for 48% of Turkey’s tourism revenue, 500 citizens have fallen ill since the beginning of the pandemic, 14 of them with a fatal outcome.

As far as hospitals are concerned, Turkey has the highest number of intensive care beds per 100,000 inhabitants in the world (40), and hospital occupancy at the peak of the pandemic in mid-April, when the daily number of infected reached 6,000, did not exceed 80%. In April Turkey started domestic production of respirators, the mass production of surgical masks, as well as alcohol. For months, the most sought-after product on the market has been cologne, which was widely used in restaurants and households even before the arrival of the coronavirus.

Lara beach2.jpg

The re-establishment of international air traffic began in mid-June, and flights to most EU countries, as well as to Croatia, will start on July 1st after which the arrival of the higher number of foreign tourists is expected. Until July, all the major airports in Turkey will have test stations and the passengers will be able to take the test for the price of € 15 before the return flights. Turkey as a non-EU country, already has an agreement with Germany regarding quarantine upon return to the home country. Passengers should be tested up to 48 hours prior to departure, and if the test result is negative, a 14-day quarantine is not required. Germany has the largest Turkish diaspora, and Germans are the second most frequent guests after the Russians.

Perge_archaeo park.jpg

Turkey is the sixth most visited country in the world in terms of annual number of visitors with 51.8 million in 2019, out of which 86 percent were foreign (source UNWTO). The economic contribution of tourism in the GDP is 12 percent, while in Croatia the share of tourism in the GDP is 25 percent. In the first five months of 2020, there was a 66 percent decline in foreign arrivals, ie 8.5 million arrivals. It is difficult to predict to what extent this number can be compensated in the second half of the year.

perge 2.jpg

Time will tell whether safe tourism at the time of the pandemic is feasible in practice, but Turks did everything to minimize the risk. And the most unpredictable variable in the whole story of safe tourism is the human factor.

Turkey to launch coronavirus-free certification program to promote safe tourism

By daily sabah with aa.

Turkey is preparing to launch an internationally recognized certification system for “coronavirus-free” touristic areas and facilities to revive the industry, the tourism minister said, adding that domestic tourism could return back to normal by late May.

Speaking to broadcaster NTV, Culture and Tourism Minister Mehmet Nuri Ersoy said the ministry had been working with relevant ministries and industry representatives to decide on the guidelines and regulations for the certification system. Ersoy said the ministry would begin handing out “coronavirus-free” certificates to tourism-based businesses where no contact with the virus had been detected, and the necessary safety and hygiene measures have been confirmed.

Ersoy noted that the industry could begin the recovery process in late April with domestic tourism destinations and added that the normalization of inbound tourism would be possible by the end of May.

Erkan Yağcı, chairman of the Mediterranean Touristic Hoteliers' Association, said the certification measures had been welcomed by an industry seeking guidance for normalization efforts amid the pandemic.

He noted that the certification would help hotels and other service providers to assure travelers of their hygiene standards, which Yağcı said would be the most important factor in post-pandemic tourism.

Commenting on recovery trends in upcoming months, Ülkay Atmaca, head of Turkey's Professional Hotel Managers Association, said the industry could begin seeing mobility during the Eid al-Fitr holiday, the feast marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan, at the end of May.

Atmaca said the return of international travelers was tied to a swift recovery in domestic tourism: “Domestic travelers need to start vacationing to show foreign tourists that Turkey is a safe and hygienic holiday destination.”

The outbreak has put tens of millions of jobs in the global tourism and tourism sector at risk. The World Travel and Tourism Council last month said the pandemic was putting up to 50 million jobs in the industry, with travel likely to slump by a quarter this year and Asia being the most affected continent.

International travel is expected to fall at least 10.5% this year, the biggest year-on-year drop, the industry consultancy Tourism Economics recently said.

Meanwhile, Turkey announced in March a TL 100 billion ($14.7 billion) stimulus package to support businesses and industries affected by the fallout of the outbreak. It supports several companies and sectors as well as the tourism sector by paying personnel salaries and postponing loans and taxes. The tourism accommodation tax was also suspended until November to support the sector.

⚠️ Update: November 11, 2021 Entry conditions for international travelers Turkey is open to tourists. All arriving passengers must submit a negative COVID-19 PCR test taken within 72 hours of departure unless they have proof of being fully vaccinated (no less than 14 days ago) or proof that they have recovered from COVID-19 in the last six months. Certain travelers may be subject to stricter restrictions including mandatory quarantine, such as those who have recently been in Brazil, South Africa, Nepal, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka. You may be randomly tested at the airport upon arrival — anyone who tests positive must quarantine for 14 days. All travelers must complete an Entry Form at least 72 hours before their departure. Domestic restrictions Face masks and social distancing are mandatory in public places nationwide. Most businesses are permitted to operate, subject to hygiene and social distancing requirements.

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed travel forever. Many international borders remain closed to tourists and most countries have strict restrictions in place. Fortunately, travel is slowly beginning to regain traction. Turkey is one such country where the majority of its international borders are open while it continues to keep up with stringent health and safety practices for all its travelers. We ask the hard question — “Is it safe to travel to Turkey during the COVID-19 pandemic?” so you can make the right choices and feel comfortable on your trip.

Turkey is the incredible transcontinental country that straddles Europe and Asia. The history of Turkey dates back centuries to the Ottoman Empire, also known as the Turkish Empire, which came to be one of the world’s most powerful states in the 15th and 16th centuries. Today, Turkey remains vibrant, cosmopolitan, and thriving.

Turkey has opened its borders to certain international travelers. Most travelers are required to submit a negative certificate for a COVID-19 PCR test (taken no more than 72 hours prior to departure) to enter the country if they are unvaccinated.

Are you going to Turkey, Egypt or Israel on holiday? The Foreign Office has warned travellers to several countries to monitor advice after an Iranian attack on Israel pushed tension in the Middle East up another notch.

Tension in the Middle East has ratcheted up again after Iran's attack on Israel, as the world waits to see how Benjamin Netanyahu's government will respond.

With the threat of widening conflict, people due to travel through or over the Middle East may be asking if their plans may be impacted.

On Saturday, flight data showed dozens of journeys that would have travelled over the Middle East turned back after Iran fired more than 300 drones and missiles into Israel .

Here is what airlines are saying and the latest safety advice to travellers.

EasyJet scraps Tel Aviv flights

EasyJet has suspended all flights to Tel Aviv over safety concerns.

The budget airline told Sky News it has grounded its flights until 27 October at the earliest "as a result of the continued evolving situation" in the region.

Wizz Air customers could see schedule changes

Wizz Air cancelled flights to Tel Aviv on Sunday 14 and Monday 15 April before resuming its schedule.

But it said customers could experience schedule changes as it closely monitors the situation.

British Airways operating as normal

British Airways - which operates four daily return flights per week between Heathrow and Tel Aviv - said its flights were continuing to operate as planned, but it too was monitoring the situation.

Is it safe to travel to Turkey?

Turkey is a popular holiday destination for people from the UK with the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism saying that last year 3.16 million Britons made the journey there, according to Travel Weekly.

Yet, it borders a number of countries that the Foreign Office advises against travel to.

The vast majority of the country is considered generally safe for tourists, with some exceptions.

The Foreign Office advises against all travel within 10km of the border with Syria , and all but essential travel to the Sirnak and Hakkari provinces.

Is it safe to travel to Israel?

Some parts of Israel are considered "red zones" by the Foreign Office, with the government advising against all travel there.

For the rest of the country - including East Jerusalem and Tel Aviv - the advice is to travel only if it is essential.

Tourist Israel says around 220,000 Britons usually go to the country every year and the Foreign Office is advising against travel close to the border with Gaza, within 5km of the border with Lebanon and within 500m of the border with Syria.

You can see the full updated list of "red zones" on the Foreign Office advice pages.

Don't travel to Iran, Iraq, Yemen, Lebanon or Syria - Foreign Office

The Foreign Office advises against all travel to Iran, Syria, Lebanon and Yemen.

It advises against all travel to Iraq except to the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI), where it advises against all but "essential travel".

Can I safely go on holiday in Egypt?

The main tourist areas in Egypt are generally considered safe, including the capital Cairo, cities along the Nile and Red Sea resorts.

Over 1.5 million British Nationals visit Egypt every year, according to analysts Gitnux, and the areas the Foreign Office warns not to travel to include the Governorate of North Sinai, where the Rafah crossing to Gaza is located, and within 20km of the border with Libya.

Check advice on other Middle East states before you travel

Following Iran's attack on Israel, the Foreign Office issued a warning relating to several countries in the surrounding area, telling travellers to check for the latest information.

Included in this are popular destinations like Dubai (visited by more than a million Britons last year according to Travel Weekly) and Marrakech.

"On 13 April 2024 Iran carried out military action against Israel. Monitor this travel advice and other media as the situation is changing fast," the FCDO said in a statement.

The countries covered by the warning include Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Morocco, Tunisia, Saudi Arabia, Algeria, Bahrain, Kuwait, Libya, Jordan and Oman.
