Kapa Stamp Cacao

We Love Chocolate

Our family has been farming in the islands since the days of the Hawaiian kingdom. Recognized three times as producing the best cacao beans in the world by Cocoa of Excellence in Paris, France — we are pioneers of cacao farming on Kauai.

In Hawaiian, the phrase Malama ‘Aina means to care for the land so it can sustain life for future generations. As a fifth-generation family in Hawaii, we are honored to be stewards of both the land and local culture since 1865. We are proud to continue our family’s legacy through the experience of small-scale sustainable cacao farming, exquisitely crafted chocolate, and educational farm tours on our historically-rich property.

#1 Rated Tour on Kauaʻi

This tour was so enjoyable! One of the best ever! Mason was our guide and not only was he incredibly witty and personable, but was so knowledgeable of the workings of the farm as well as all of the trees, fruits, and the making of cocoa into craft chocolate. The fruit and chocolate tastings were beyond generous and truly gave us an new appreciation of craft chocolate versus candy.

Henry was our tour guide and was energetic, informative, organized and professional. On the farm tour he taught about about the plants, trees, shrubs, and weeds- their importance and usefulness on the farm. Getting to taste farm grown fruits, their chocolate, and those from around the world built true appreciation for the process, quality, and challenges they face. The chocolate was divine and worth savoring.

Lydgate Farms tour was a fascinating experience! We learned so much from Henry our guide about regenerative farming. We tasted seven kinds of tropical fruits that were amazing and we had 10 kinds of chocolate!!! It’s worth every penny and we absolutely will be back again!

This has to be one of our favorite tours of all the islands and we have been to them all!! We had Jake as a tour guide. He was hell bent on making sure we knew how the Cacau beans were grown and processed versus the companies that do not grow Cacau on the islands. He was fantastic in his knowledge and desire to educate us on the history and production of the great Lydgate Farms products!! We will be back !! We had numerous samples of chocolate !!! Well worth the cost of the tour!!

This may seem like an odd tour to take on Kaua'i; however, you will not be disappointed. We learned not only a great deal about growing cacao in Kaua'i but also about the chocolate industry in general. We were also treated to many tastings from tropical fruits to cacao itself. We highly recommend this tour.

Our third wonderful time spent enjoying the farm, the fruit, and of course the chocolate at Lydgate. Our guide this time was Mel, a knowledgeable and thoroughly delightful young lady who instantly turned the entire group of “guests” into her good friends, sharing history, technical insights into chocolate and organic farming as well as fun and insight stories about herself, the farm, and their products. Informative, great fun, and a really great way to spend a few hours immersed in the joy of Kauai!

Sorry but this should be 10 STARS! Place was fabulous. We learned a lot about chocolate that we never knew before. One of the highlights was our guide Jackson. He was funny (Very funny actually) and informative. (Very informative actually.). I highly recommend this tour. It’s one of the best we’ve been on on the island of Kauai.

This tour exceeded my expectations. Our guide was very informative and made the experience a lot of fun. I learned a lot about how chocolate is produced commercially, as well as the different types, grades and tastes of chocolate. As a result, have become much more selective when it comes to purchasing chocolate. Their dark chocolate macadamia nuts and the rum chocolate bar are divine! Highly recommend this tour.

This was probably the best tour we did while on Kauai! We thought it would be fun but had no idea how much fun and how much we would learn! Mason was a fantastic guide and the fact he is also one of the farmers and lives on the farm made it even better! We got to try all sorts of tropical fruits and then when we got to the chocolate tasting portion, it was truly an experience. And educational. Highly recommend this tour!

Hands down a can’t miss experience. The tour is incredibly informative about not only chocolate but other plants and fruits that grow on the farm as well. You get to try chocolate in every step of their process from start to finish and enjoy many other in-season fruits from the land. All in all such a cool (and incredibly tasty) experience, highly recommend.

Gosh our guide, the farm and the chocolate made the experience.!!!! I didn't catch our guides name, but we went on Monday May 29th from 11am-2pm. He was so passionate and knowledgeable about the farm, chocolate, honey, vanilla, trees, Mr. Lydgate. He made the experience so special. It was a lot of Chocolate, very generous and well done. The stations were fun and educational. I live here on the South Shore and will tell everyone at my restaurant, Cabana Bar & Grill @thecabanakauai! Thank you! A Hui Ho!

I had seen the Lydgate Chocolate Tour on Facebook. The reviews were all positive and the tour sounded good, so I signed up myself and 2 teen daughters. We all had a great time! It was fun and informative and the samples of fruit and chocolate were excellent! Jacob was an excellent tour guide. He possesses a passion for what he does and it shows! I highly recommend. Definitely a unique tour! Lydgate chocolate is to die for! Sooooooo good!

What a wonderful experience. We learned so much about chocolate and the farm. It was great! Our guide was very informative and entertaining. We snacked on very different fruits and learned about how they’re grown. We ate chocolate and chocolate and then chocolate. It was fantastic! When we got home we ordered through they’re website. It shipped fast, still tastes great! Highly recommend.

What a delightful deep dive into mindful experiences of both the experience of tasting chocolate but also the the fully engaged regenerative farming process. Lydgate Farm tour opened my eyes to the experience of chocolate from plant to bean to liquor to the 'food of the Gods' and opened my heart to the island wide regenerative farming to growing food for the island and the world. Good people solid family business.

Where is Kalalea View Farm on Kauai?

Kalalea View Farm is a family-run farm on the east side of Kauai. The address is: Kalalea View Dr, Anahola, HI 96703 .

They offer super cool farm tours on Kauai as well as produce boxes.

What to Know about this Kauai Farm Tour Before You Go:

How to visit the kalalea view farm.

You’ll need to make a reservation ahead of time. I found out about the tour from Facebook, so I arranged in via Facebook messenger. However, you can also head to their website and contact them.

Where to Park

The farm is located behind a gate. We parked on the residential street and then just opened the gate to walk in.

When we arrived, we were greeted by our tour guide Brian (who also owns the farm). He showed us where we could drop our bags and then we grabbed a wheelbarrow and headed into the fields!

Kauai Farm Tour

This is a 90-minute experience where you get to go on a working farm on Kauai and participate in hands-on activities.

Put the kids to work at a Kauai farm tour. Photo of a boy pushing a wheelbarrow on a farm on Kauai

What’s really cool about the Kalalea View Farm tour is that it’s totally customizable! You can choose 3 activities for your tour. Brian gave us these options of activities:

  • Pollinate passion fruit and pumpkin (if appropriate flowers are open and available)
  • Orchard tour
  • Coco milk-making (sample and take home coco milk)
  • Garden Tour
  • Sugar cane bike juicing (sample and take home sugar cane juice)
  • Hot sauce making
  • Guacamole harvest and make
  • Smoothie making
  • Harvest your own Cassava (up to 5lbs) and Kalo
  • Harvest your own banana tree and keep up to 3 bananas per person.
  • Other custom experiences are available

At the end of the tour, there are some awesome products available for purchase like t-shirts, honey, hot sauce, etc.

Food Options

If you’d like a bite to eat after your Kauai farm tour, I suggest heading to the Anahola Cafe . It’s pretty close by and their food is seriously tasty! There’s also the Ha Coffee shop next door.

The Highlights of This Kauai Tour and What You Should Look Out For

There are honestly too many amazing things to share and I don’t want to ruin any surprises for people who plan on doing this tour.

But here are a few activities that stand out:

Picking Tropical Fruit

The first thing we did was head into the orchard and pick tropical fruit. Brian showed us how to tell whether or not the fruit was ripe. And he even had a sheet of paper so the kids could cross off the fruit we got.

Image of a man and boy looking at a sheet of paper with a bunch of fruit trees on it at a Kauai farm

We ended up getting tangerines, oranges, lemons, limes, and a bunch of other stuff. Everything went into the wheelbarrow.

When we were done picking fruit, we headed to an outdoor table where Brian sliced everything up so we could taste it.

Image of a boy picking up a slice of citrus fruit at a Kauai farm tour

My kids wanted to juice all the citrus fruit and Brian was awesome and got them a citrus squeezer so they could create their own fresh fruit concoctions. It was awesome how he just rolled along with their energy.

Image of a boy squeezing citrus into a plastic cup

We got to bring home all the fruit that we didn’t taste (or juice). Oh, and we fed all the fruit scraps to the chickens!

Chopping Down a Banana Tree

My 8-year-old is the one who picked this activity because he thought it would be cool to tell his friends that he chopped down a banana tree in Hawaii.

Image of a boy chopping down a banana tree

It was such an interesting experience!

Brian showed my son how to make the notches in the tree and which direction we wanted the tree to fall. Then, my son got to use a machete and try it for himself!

Image of a man and boy with a chopped down banana tree on a Kauai farm

We ended up needing Brian’s help, but the kids were still stoked to participate.

Of course, the best part was getting to eat the sweet bananas they harvested!

farm tour kauai

Making Fresh Sugar Cane Juice

The activity I was most curious about making sugar cane juice. I’d never seen it done before!

Image of a boy carrying a large sugar cane stalk.

Brian had my 5-year-old help him chop down a sugar cane stalk and drag it over to an undercover area. Then, he chopped it into smaller pieces and had my kids thoroughly wash them.

Then came the fun part!

Image of a sugar cane stalk going into a juicing machine

We fed the sugar cane pieces into a slot in a bicycle, and my oldest son pedaled the wheel and squeeze out the sugar cane juice!

Image of a grandma, mom, and two boys doing cheers with cups of freshly squeezed sugar cane juice

We collected all the juice is a big jar and got to taste it. We’d never done that before! And we ended up mixing in some of the citrus juice my kids squeezed earlier and it was such a tasty combo!

Kauai Farm Tour Tips for Families

All ages are welcome.

We went with a 5-year-old and 8-year-old and had a blast! I could see tweens and teens also having a good time.

Image of two boys eating citrus fruit

If you plan on going with babies or toddlers, I’d recommend bringing a baby carrier along.

What to Wear

You’ll definitely want to wear closed-toe shoes and some sort of hat . I wore a baseball cap and my kids wore straw sun hats.

I also suggest lots of sunscreen since you’ll be out in the elements for a couple of hours.

What to Bring

We didn’t bring much but it would have been handy to have a water bottle .

Kauai also has a reputation for being the “rainy island” so you might want to pack a light jacket , especially if you visit during the winter months.

How Much Does it Cost?

This 90-minute interactive farm tour costs $50 per person ($200 minimum). We thought it was worth the money because it was a unique opportunity and it was a private tour.

Kauai Farms FAQ

The Polynesians brought crops like taro, sugar cane, coconut, sweet potato, and breadfruit when they came to Kauai. Today, many items are grown on Kauai like sugarloaf pineapple, Kauai coffee, mangoes, papaya, and citrus plants.

Yes, there are still rice paddies on Kauai, however, they are mostly for research vs commercially grown.

While you may associate pineapple or sugar cane with Hawaii, the most lucrative crop grown in Hawaii are actually figs!

So, is the Kalalea View Farm Tour Worth It?

Absolutely! And what’s so cool about it is that we could come back next year and choose 3 different activities for a completely new experience!

While we love doing tours in Hawaii, this was such a customized experience and my kids learned a lot about farming in Hawaii in a fun and natural way!

Hear Why Over 800 Visitors Think We're The Sweetest!

farm tour kauai

I went to three major gardens on Kauai, and this was the smallest by far, but was also the best! Princeville Botanical Gardens is definitely a must see when in Kauai. Small but mighty, it has lots to see and even a chocolate lecture. The guide Brad is a fountain of knowledge and a real asset to the gardens. You will learn cool things and see amazing plants in an amazing little garden that started out as someone's yard! Really like it! Next trip I will visit this again.

farm tour kauai

Lost in a residential area, this 9-acre natural garden is a nice change from the more touristy venues. Beautiful landscaping and a guide with solid knowledge of plant origins (well done, Donna). My wife said this was her favorite part of our week in Kauai. The garden is located in the middle of a private residential area with no signage and once you are there, you'll know why you came.

farm tour kauai

This three-hour tour of the grounds of a private formal garden was worth every penny. The guides are volunteers, who are very knowledgable and interact charmingly with visitors. We learned about many local and foreign plants and at several points we stopped to sample local fruit and honey, all grown on the premises. We also learned about different kinds of chocolate and tested our taste buds' sensitivity to the various flavors.

Beautiful garden! This is a must see if you are visiting Kauai! When you first arrive, the garden does not seem like much due to its size, but with the guided tour you really see the beauty of the garden! The staff members are so kind and knowledgeable. You get to learn a lot about Kauai and the plants that are found in the garden. And don't forget about the amazing chocolate tasting in the middle of the tour! I recommend this garden to everyone!

Farm tours at Common Ground

To Book an Upcoming Tour Please visit our Farm & Food Experience Page .

Common Ground’s Farm Tour cannot simply be described as a walk around the farm. It is not just a visual experience, nor a lecture. It is an experience of smell, touch, introspection. It is the sound of rushing water at the Stone Dam, built in 1880. It is a scavenger hunt on Kauaʻi agricultural land for canoe crops first propagated here hundreds of years ago by Polynesian explorers. It is the observation of harmony between plant, animal and fungal elements. It is the taste of an exquisitely crafted farm-to-table meal. An immersion for mind and body, the Common Ground Farm Tour is an experience of interconnectedness.

farm tour kauai

Led by Common Ground's Agroecology team, the first portion of the tour begins with a discussion of the urgent need to transform the destructive practices of industrial agriculture into regenerative solutions. It then leads to a walk through his multi-story agroforestry design which incorporates multi-species grazing. An exploration of this food forest will reveal a symphony of relationships between Hawaiian favorites such as ʻulu, kava, and taro, Amazon rainforest specimens, annual vegetables, mushrooms, egg-laying chickens, and dairy cows. All of these diverse elements are woven together into a resilient agricultural ecosystem, a snapshot of what the farm of the future could look like.

After the walk through the food forest the tour proceeds to the kitchen lanai with a discussion about the importance of supporting the local food system while on Kauaʻi and specifically how visitors of the islands can bolster this work. After so much talk about farming and food, we a enjoy farm-to-table family style meal . With the  Food is harvested from the farm and prepared fresh for the tour, menu includes a tropical fruit tasting with in-season fruit (Currently featuring mango, papaya, surinam cherry, cara cara orange, guava, pomelo) and a Roasted rosemary farm raised chicken with Ulu (breadfruit), farm greens.  Meyer lemon and ginger blossom lemonade.

farm tour kauai

Arrive before the tour to walk to Stone Dam , just beyond the gates of the CG campus. Experience the Plantation-era of Kauaʻi and the sugar industry which drove development and infrastructure and forever changed the island. Common Ground Kauai was part of the Kilauea Sugar Plantation and Guava Plantation, Guava Kai . Upon reaching the dam, take a pause and a collective breath and honor the practice of entering a space with reverence. Hawaiian canoe crops are thriving in this area; keep an eye out to find them. Native and endemic plants are vital for a healthy ecosystem in Hawaiʻi. Because of the extreme isolation of the islands, 90% of Hawaiian plants are found nowhere else in the world. Join in a conversation about why Hawaiʻi is referred to as the “Endangered Species Capital of the World.”

For those looking to connect deeper with Kauai. Not focused on a single crop like popular Kauai Chocolate Tours, Common Ground’s farm tours is an activity lends to a greater understanding. Not only of the ecosystem and food systems of Kauaʻi and Hawaiʻi at large, but also extend a vision of interconnectedness between humans and our planet that any person, local or tourist, will take home with them.

Rice Mill & Taro Farm Tour

  • Staff review
  • Photos ( 5 )

If you enjoy history and learning more about how people live and work in the Hawaiian islands, then you'll love a guided tour to the Ho'opulapula Haraguchi Rice Mill. This guided EcoTour includes fresh farm samplings, a ride through a working multi-generational farm within the National Wildlife refuge, unique architectural sights, and so much more.

There are those who only enjoy the more recreational pursuits when they vacation, such as windsurfing and hurling down ATV trails, and then there are those who enjoy more educational pursuits. Those who like to learn about the neighborhoods and culture they are visiting. If you and your party are more in the latter, then you should consider scheduling a tour with Ho’opulapula Haraguchi Rice Mill.

Ho’opulapula Haraguchi Rice Mill is a certified nonprofit agrarian museum that is uniquely the only remaining rice mill in all of Hawaii. This farm and milling operation also happens to be one of the oldest rice mills in the state, with a production history stretching back to the 1800s. And while rice isn’t currently grown here, the land continues to serve as an operational farm.

Rice farming was once a big agricultural commodity in Hawaii, particularly booming during and in the decades immediately following the Civil War. By the 1920s, rice was second only to sugar in acreage farmed and the amount sold. However, by the 20th century, agricultural situations changed and Hawaii had stopped producing rice altogether (it simply was cheaper to import from Asia or from the American South). Today, Ho’opulapula Haraguchi Rice Mill stands as a last reminder of that agricultural history and continues the legacy of the Haraguchi family.

The Haraguchi family has owned and operated the farmlands upon which the Ho’opulapula Haraguchi Rice Mill still stands. The mill itself was rebuilt three times, once following a devastating fire and twice following hurricanes. Today, it stands as a gorgeous architectural highlight that overlooks the family’s farmlands that are now utilized to grow taro and other agricultural crops that are more amiable to Hawaii’s climate.

So if learning more about this agricultural history of Hawaii and seeing how today’s crops are grown interests you, then consider a tour with Ho’opulapula Haraguchi Rice Mill. This group offers guided tours to the general public as well as specialized school tours that cater to local and nonlocal youth.

Ho’opulapula Haraguchi Rice Mill Guided Tour This guided tour is the  only  way one can see several cool parts of Kauai. First, it’s the only way to see the beautiful Hanalei valley up close and with one’s own two feet. That’s because this valley and the Haraguchi farm itself reside in a unique spot within the National Wildlife Refuge that is generally not otherwise accessible to the public. Thus, during the 3-hour farm EcoTour, guests are privy to some very exciting and unique sights, including the possibility of viewing five endangered bird species and other wildlife as well as the historic rice mill and the family’s existing farmlands.

To join Ho’opulapula Haraguchi Rice Mill Guided EcoTour, guests meet at the Hanalei Taro & Juice Co. food truck off of Kuhio Highway in Kauai’s Hanalei. While this is a long tour and you might want to snack beforehand, know that a farm-fresh picnic lunch is included as part of the guided EcoTour.

Insider Tips: -Lunch is included. As part of the guided tour fee, guests are offered a delicious lunch sourced from ingredients grown on the same farm that’s home to the Ho’opulapula Haraguchi Rice Mill. -The guided tour will last around 3 hours from pick up to drop off. -School tours are much shorter, lasting about an hour, and must be privately arranged with the nonprofit’s coordination team. -Wear clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. Depending upon when you take part in the tour, you may experience more interactive aspects. For example, the guided EcoTour will often involve picking apple snails and poi pounding. Both of which can cause some light staining on delicate fabrics.

RUM SAFARI IS A KAUAI MUST-DO!

★★★★★ Add the Rum Safari NOW to your Kauai to-do list — especially if you love cocktails! Our hosts Tiny & Rex were hands-down two of the best tour guides of any adventure we have ever had. They were hilarious, welcoming, and so knowledgeable. Our family participated in the Rum Safari. We loved cruising through the plantation in a jeep-like truck with multiple rows (it was covered to shade from the sun), meeting the farm animals, learning about the history of hawaii & the plants, and of course, tasting Koloa rum and sipping hand-crafted farm-to-glass cocktails they whipped up in front of us using fruits from the plantation itself. We were taken to a beautiful jungle setting and also a gazebo on the plantation to sample, sip, and enjoy ourselves. We went with our adult family of 7. Buy tickets in advance in order to reserve the day & time you want. A MUST-DO!!! - Avery J. | Tripadvisor

KAUAI RUM TOUR!!

★★★★★ This tour was a great way not only to experience the plantation, but taste some incredible rum and have two cocktails to boot! This was a fun thing to do with our adult kids. The guides were funny and great at putting together great drinks. The two stops were beautiful places to sample rum and look around at the gorgeous area.. We loved seeing the pigs running towards us when they saw the tortillas coming at them, and the goats were so cute too. I think we will end up doing this tour again. It was a ton of fun! - Marla J. | Tripadvisor

RUM SAFARI - A HIGHLIGHT OF OUR TRIP

★★★★★ This was incredibly fun! It was really cool to get to see all the plants and animals (especially the pigs) at Kilohana Plantation, and I was impressed by how knowledgeable our guides, Tiny and Courtney, were (and also how friendly and hilarious). The farm-to-table cocktails were the best we had on the island, thanks to the super fresh ingredients and the Koloa Rum, which was really good. This ended up being the sleeper hit of activities we did on Kauai and definitely one of our favorite experiences for our whole HI trip. I highly recommend it! - Rebecca | Tripadvisor

AMAZING TIME AT KAUAI SAFARIS RUM TOUR

★★★★★ Had an amazing time on the Kauai Safaris Rum tour! Our tour was led by Fletchre and Tiny - they were super engaging, informative, and just made the tour an overall blast. We experienced a tour through a beautiful plantation and learned all about the crops being grown and interacted with farm animals as well. The best part of course was trying different rums, and our guides concocted what could have been the best cocktail I've ever had! This was one of our favorite tours throughout our entire stay in Hawaii and I highly recommend it as a must-do. Thank you Fletcher and Tiny!!! - Glen K. | Tripadvisor

We’ll continue the adventure by visiting new sites of the 105 acre plantation. Kilohana is home to over 70 wild pigs who you’ll be able to feed and interact with on the way to the next tasting. At the reflective pond, we’ll head into our Loi Lanai with a luscious backdrop to enjoy the next cocktail. For this tasting, we use local fruits and herbs directly from the plantation to mix a delicious farm to glass cocktail. Before we head back to the starting point, enjoy time with new friends over some of the freshest cocktails on the island with a rum safari in Kauai!

What a wonderful time we had on the farm. We felt so welcome. We learned so much about noni and composting and gardening. Steve was so knowledgable. You'll regret it if you don't put it on your list.
I was expecting a sales pitch but was pleasantly surprised. The tour covered a wealth of information on Noni, the farm, plants, birds, worms, farming, and the list goes on. This is definitely hidden treasure on the island.
Worth every minute spent on the Noni farm. I love the product and have used it for over a year. My husband's knees and my back are so much better with Noni. My digestion is better too. I recommend this tour. Just do it.
Life changing. I can't say enough about how the tour has helped ours and others well being! There is a great amount of diversification of information, education and scenery.
I love this place. Nice to be around family and feel like family. Nice to come to something so rich with info of all kinds: health, sustainability, local wildlife, island history, agriculture. Loved it.

Is the Kauai Rum Safari Worth It?

Are you looking for a kid-free activity on kauai that involves booze keep scrolling for my honest kauai rum safari review..

I’ve been wanting to check out the Kauai Rum Safari pretty much since it opened a few years ago, but I’ve ALWAYS had at least one kid with me.

So, when I went for my first kid-free trip to Kauai recently, it was the first thing I booked.

After years of anticipation, I wanted to know if it was worth the hype. Keep scrolling to find out!

Where is the Kauai Rum Safari Tour?

The Kauai Rum Safari is located at Kilohana Plantation in Lihue. The address is 3-2087 Kaumualii Hwy, Lihue, HI 96766 .

There is a ton of parking available. It’s right next to Luau Kalamaku, the Plantation House Restaurant, and Koloa Rum.

What is the Kauai Rum Safari?

This is a unique adventure at Kauai Safaris on the Kilohana Plantation, where you can enjoy a two-hour rum safari tour.

Start by boarding their open-air trucks to explore tropical orchards, tasting exotic fruits and viewing farm animals.

Experience rum tasting, enjoy signature Mai Tais, and savor farm-to-glass cocktails made with fresh plantation ingredients.

Conclude your visit with a relaxing stroll through a tropical rainforest and interact with their friendly farm animals.

This 21+ tour combines the excitement of a safari with the luxury of fine drinking and scenic beauty.

What Was Our Kauai Safari Like?

We were able to get a parking spot pretty easily, which was great. And then we headed into the Kauai Safaris shop to check in.

The lady there gave us each rubber wristbands to wear that showed that we had checked in, signed the waiver, and were ready to go!

Then, we waited with everyone else next to the boarding area.

Open-Air Vehicle

We hopped onto a one-of-a-kind open-air rum safari truck and met our tour guides/bartenders.

They were really funny and told a bunch of “dad jokes” as we cruised through the plantation.

We also got to see several tropical fruit plants, such as lychee, longan, cashew, and mango. We even stopped so one of our guides could hop out and pick an orange fresh off the tree to use in the first cocktail.

Kahuna Nui Valley

The first stop was Kahuna Nui Valley. We took the vehicle deep into the jungle and it felt like we were in a real-life Jurassic Park!

Then we hopped out and walked through the jungle on a really nice platform walkway. It’s sort of like a bougie jungle experience!

Our guides started working on the drinks. First, we tasted four different shots of rum. This was my least favorite part of the tour because I really like juice with my rum!

But, it was actually a great way to smell and taste the different types of Koloa Rum and it’s the only way that I figured out that I actually prefer the dark rum to the gold rum. And that the chocolate rum is divine!

After the tasting, we got to try their signature mai tai cocktail. It was SO yummy and you could really taste the fresh orange in it!

The ambiance of the whole Jungle Bungalow was really cool and I would have been happy hanging out there for awhile, but the tour continued!

Farm Animal Safari

We were told to grab our drinks and return to the vehicle for the ultimate drinking safari experience!

We got to see a bunch of farm animals like wild pigs, horses, goats, and donkeys. They passed out tortillas so we could feed them!

The final stop was at their gorgeous gazebo at the taro patch.

The mixologist created a special farm-to-glass cocktail that didn’t even have a name yet! It featured avocado and I swear it’s one of the best cocktails I’ve ever had!

One cool thing about the Kauai rum tour is that they actually have an Instagram that is specifically for sharing their special cocktail recipes, so I immediately followed them.

They came around and served us potato chips, which really hit the spot while we relaxed. And we had time to chat with the guides and learn a bit more about island life.

Once we thoroughly enjoyed our cocktails, it was time to get back on the vehicle and drive a few minutes to the parking lot.

What’s cool is that if you’re feeling a bit tipsy, you can always head straight for the restaurant there to eat something and sober up.

What to Know about this Kauai Rum Tour Before You Go

It’s not part of koloa rum.

Even though they use and highlight Koloa Rum (which has a shop and rum tastings at Kilohana Plantation), this company is separate.

But, if you want to buy bottles of Koloa Rum after your tour, it’s easy to walk there after the tour drops you off. It’s all at Kilohana Plantation.

They Can Make Mocktails

While it may seem strange to do a rum tour and ask for a non-alcoholic option, it’s actually such a smart idea.

Part of the fun is getting to go into the jungle and taste artisan drinks. They still taste great even without the rum.

Also, it gives you the option to switch partway through the tour if you’re feeling like you need to hydrate.

You Can Bring Food

They will give you some Maui onion potato chips at your final stop to help you soak up some of the alcohol.

But, I saw a group of people on our tour who brought spam musubi to eat after the first stop and I thought that was brilliant! I’m really kicking myself for not thinking of doing that.

What to Wear

I wore sandals, a t-shirt, and pants and I was quite comfortable. I also saw people wearing dresses. There’s no need for closed-toe shoes. I also wouldn’t wear heels, but that’s because it’s Kauai.

Bug Spray is Available

They do have containers of bug spray available at the first stop.

There’s a bunch right as you get out of the safari vehicle but they also have some in the Jungle Bungalow in case you regretted not applying some earlier.

It’s Mostly Shaded

I brought a sun hat but I really didn’t need it. The stops were all in covered areas and the safari vehicle was also covered.

How Much Does it Cost and Where is it Located?

The tour is 2 hours long and it costs $78 per person. There’s a discounted rate of $58.50 if you are a Hawaii resident with an I.D.

It’s located at Kilohana Plantation in Lihue, which is centrally located on the East side of the island.

So, is the Kauai Rum Safari Tour Worth It?

I thought it was a BLAST! We got to taste yummy cocktails while exploring part of Kauai that you can only access on a tour like this.

Plus, I thought it was pretty affordable for such a unique experience. We’ll definitely be doing it again!
