The program is designed so that overseas students can become more than tourists, experiencing life in the U.S. first-hand by working alongside U.S. citizens in temporary employment. Not only does this unique opportunity allow for a genuine “U.S. experience,” it helps cover travel expenses!

For a time, the program was offered only in European and Central/South American countries and was introduced in Asia only in the 1990s to countries such as Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and Thailand. In Singapore, it officially took root in November 2000 and the program is available now in Malaysia, Australia, and Indonesia as well. A pioneer group of 30 students from Singapore embarked on this adventure in May 2001 through Speedwing and hundreds of other countries' students have participated in this program each year ever since.

Students on the program are employed in summer jobs in famous locations like amusement parks Cedar Point and Six Flags and national parks Yellowstone and Grand Canyon. Upon fulfilling their work agreement, they get to travel around the USA within a stipulated period as part of the program. In this way, they have in many seasons of the program formed meaningful friendships with people from many countries, acquired overseas work experience, and simply gained great memories.

This program is not for students to gain practical training, apply classroom knowledge, complete compulsory work attachment/internship programs unless otherwise stated by their institutions, or seek permanent work opportunities or long-term career in the USA. At the end of the program, all students must return to the country in which they are studying.

• Minimum employment period is 2 to 3 months. Maximum is 4 months.
• Duration of stay in the USA can be up to 5 months (maximum 4 months of employment followed by an optional maximum 30 days of travel within the US).
• Legal work document and visa are generally issued for only the work duration agreed between each participant and the employer. Participants cannot extend work duration when they are already in the USA.
• Participants who are required to return to school can only remain in the USA on the program until the last day of their school vacation and must return in time to start the new semester.
• be at least 18 and not more than 30 years of age
• be a full-time tertiary student in your local university with official semester break OR a final year, final semester student graduating from a full-time course
• Undergo an interview with secure job offer before you can be accepted on the program

Summer Intake

This program is offered in Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia.

In Singapore, Speedwing usually commences recruitment in August/September and organizes a recruitment roadshow in October/November for the program in the following summer.

From 2013 onward, Singapore participants who embark on the Summer Work & Travel USA will have to follow the set date given. No employment can start earlier or end later than this range: May 01 – August 31 (not May 15, effective 2016).

For Malaysia and Indonesia, applications usually commence in October/November with the recruitment roadshow in January/February for the program in the following summer. Participating employers will interview interested candidates at recruitment roadshows (Singapore and Malaysia mostly) or online hiring via SKYPE or Zoom.

From 2013 onward, Malaysia participants who embark on the Summer Work & Travel USA will have to follow the set date given. No employment can start earlier or end later than this range: May 25 – September 15 (not May 15, effective 2016)

Winter Intake This program applies to Malaysia and Australia.

The winter recruitment begins in June/July for one to depart in November/December the same year.

From 2013 onward, Malaysia participants who embark on the Winter Work & Travel USA will have to follow the set date given. No employment can start earlier or end later than this range: November 25 – March 15 (not November 15, effective 2016).

Summer Work and Travel USA Program

The Summer Work Travel program provides foreign students with an opportunity to live and work in the United States during their summer vacation from college or university to experience and to be exposed to the people and way of life in the United States.

Participants in the program must be post-secondary school students in an educational institution outside the United States who have completed at least one semester or equivalent of post-secondary academic study. Additionally they must possess sufficient proficiency in English and must be pre-placed in a job prior to entry unless from a visa waiver country. Applicants must be pre-placed in a job prior to entry. U.S. based exchange visitor sponsors will issue form DS-2019 once they accept applicants into their program.

Participants are allowed to work up to four months during their summer break and are generally allowed a grace period (usually 30 days) to travel in the United States after the end of the exchange program. The Summer Work Travel is not for visitors who only want to travel in the United States; to enter the United States as a tourist only the correct visa category is B-2.

HISTORY OF Summer Work&Travel

The Summer Work Travel program was created by the Mutual Educational and Cultural Exchange Act of 1961, Senator J. William Fulbright’s legislation to increase mutual understanding between Americans and the people of other countries.

This legislation created such important academic exchanges as the Fulbright Program, among many others.

In that legislation, Senator Fulbright also saw the need for work-based exchange programs like Summer Work Travel. 

Over 50+ years, Summer Work Travel has become the U.S.’ largest student exchange program. It is privately funded and costs nothing to the U.S. taxpayer. In addition to its diplomatic and foreign policy benefits, the program has evolved to provide important economic benefits to U.S. host businesses and seasonal communities.

Wie ein Cowboy im Wilden Westen durch die Prärie reiten – Farmarbeit macht’s möglich! Bei einem Work & Travel-Aufenthalt im Rahmen von Farmarbeit lebst und arbeitest du für einige Wochen oder Monate auf einer Farm oder Ranch in den USA.  Hier kannst du die Weite und Natur fernab der großen Städte genießen. Als Teil deiner Gastfamilie hilfst du bei der täglich anfallenden Farmarbeit. Ein Angebot nicht nur für Naturliebhaber und Pferdenarren!

Farm oder Ranch?

Gerade in den USA liegt der Schwerpunkt der Reiseveranstalter von Farmstays auf Pferde- und Vieh-Ranches . Du kannst dich aber auch auf anderen landwirtschaftliche Betrieben wie Weingütern oder Getreidefarmen tatkräftig einbringen. Auf einer Ranch steht die Arbeit mit Tieren im Vordergrund, mit Herden zusammentreiben, Zäune flicken und Tiere füttern. Auf einer Farm kümmerst du dich eher um  Landwirtschaft im Allgemeinen.

Voraussetzungen und Unterkunft

Eine ideale Voraussetzung für ein Ranchstay ist, wenn du bereits reiten kannst und dich mit Pferden auskennst. Generell sollte man für Farmarbeit körperlich belastbar sein und keine Arbeit scheuen. Unterkunft und Verpflegung sind meistens im Gesamtpaket des Anbieters inbegriffen. Du wohnst mit der Familie zusammen im Haupthaus oder in einem separaten Gebäude auf dem Gelände.  Grundsätzlich ist Farmarbeit im Rahmen von Work and Travel als Volunteer , als Praktikant oder als Tourist möglich. Beachten solltest du hier die unterschiedlichen Visa-Voraussetzungen !

Hey Ich habe Bekannte in den USA, die eine Ranch besitzen, auf der ich gerne ein Jahr arbeiten würde. Ich finde jedoch nirgends im Internet eine Möglichkeit um ein Visum zu erlangen. Das J1 Visum würde man nur über Organisationen bekommen. Ich will unbedingt auf diese Ranch als Volunteer Worker oder Au pair . Würde mir ihr StarterKit helfen? oder wo kann ich Hilfe herbekommen. Ich verzweifle solangsam.

Hallo, bei work and travel werden nur Programme angeboten, die ein paar Wochen gehen und extrem teuer sind.. Wie kann man hier ein komplettes Auslandsjahr buchen? Kann mir jemand noch andere Internetseiten empfehlen? Bevor ich irgendein Programm buche, möchte ich schließlich wissen, wo genau die Ranch ist und Kontakt mit der jeweiligen Familie aufnehmen. ich hab da mal eine Frage, auf die ich bei meiner Recherche immer wieder gestoßen bin: Und zwar wird auf allen Seiten (so auch hier) ja immer wieder betont, dass es das klassische Work & Travel in den USA nicht gibt. Aufgefallen ist mir, dass hier immer wieder davon gesprochen wird, dass man doch mit dem Touristenvisum woofen gehen soll. Laut der amerikanischen Botschaft ist dies jedoch nicht legal, da keinerlei Arbeit (auch nicht die im Austausch gegen Kost und Logie) aufgenommen werden darf. Für jede legal aufgenommene Arbeit in den USA benötigt man mindestens das J1-Visum (laut des amerikanischen Konsulats). Jetzt stelle ich mir die Frage, wie es denn jetzt wirklich ist? Wer hat denn nun Recht? Natürlich würde ich mir auch lieber das J1-Visum sparen, da ich ungerne die gesamte Zeit bei nur einem Arbeitgeber arbeiten möchte und außer den Summercamp-Jobs eh nicht anderes für mich in Frage kommt. Daher wäre Farmarbeit das ideale für mich aber ich möchte auch nicht in die Illegalität abrutschen und im schlimmsten Fall die Ausweisung und ein lebenslanges Einreiseverbot riskieren…Das alles hat mich jetzt doch ziemlich verwirrt und für eine Antwort wäre ich dankbar!

Ich wollte gerne nächstes Jahr ein Ranchstay in den USA machen, wobei es mir egal ist, ob bezahlt oder unbezahlt. Was mir jedoch wichtig wäre, dass das ganze Programm mehr als 3 Monate geht und ich mit Pferden arbeiten kann. Hallo Berit, in den USA ist ein Farmaufenthalt für mehr als 3 Monate nur dann möglich, wenn du das Touristenvisum um weitere 90 Tage vor Ort verlängern lässt. Jedoch ist es grundsätzlich schwierig, da Farmarbeit offiziell als „Arbeit“ gilt und du demnach mit einem Touristenvisum eigentlich nicht arbeiten darfst. Hallo alle miteinander… 🙂 tut gut zu lesen, dass es anderen mit dem Thema genauso ergeht wie mir (20j) und meiner Freundin (19j)

Wir würden sehr gerne ab März 2017 Für 3-4 Monate auf einer Ranch arbeiten und dabei unser „Urlaubsgeld“ verdienen, damit wir hinterher eine gemeinsame kleine Reise durch die USA unternehmen können. Allerdings höre ich nur von Praktika und au-pair.. Die Rancharbeit würde uns besonders interessieren. Beide reiten wir seit kindheit an und wir würden dadurch mehr von Arbeit mit Pferden in anderen Ländern erfahren. Nach dem Aufenthalt habe ich vor, einen Natural Horsemanship – Kurs in Deutschland zu besuchen um danach mit neuem Wissen meine Ausbildung zur Pferdewirtin zu starten. Daher die Fragen: 1. Ist es möglich in der USA für mehrere Wochen/Monate auf einer Ranch zu arbeiten und dabei etwas Geld zu verdienen? 2. Wenn ja, gibt es „Programme“ und „Organisationen“ die uns helfen, den Aufenthalt in der USA zu planen? 7 3. Wie lange könnten wir nach der Arbeit auf einer Ranch durch die USA reisen (wegen visum usw..)

ihr seid definitiv nicht die ersten die diese Frage stellen. Leider kann ich euch aktuell keine Organisation empfehlen, die Farmarbeit in den USA anbietet. Jedoch gibt es einige Volunteer-Angebote in den USA, die sich z.B. auch mit Tieren (auch Pferden) beschäftigen. Ohne ein J-1 Visum dürft ihr leider offiziell kein Geld in den USA verdienen. Ihr müsstet somit eine Organisation finden, die Rancharbeit im Rahmen eines J-1 Programmes anbietet. Einfach wird die Sache in Kanada. Dort gibt es ein offizielles Working-Holiday-Visum und zahlreiche Ranches, die auch bei deutschen Organisationen im Programm sind. Hallo:) Ich würde gerne im Mai 2017 Rancharbeit in der USA machen. Mit welchem Visum kann ich das machen und wie lange wäre der Aufenthalt. Hallo Irina, leider ist das klassische „Work and Travel“ in den USA nicht möglich. Dafür sind die strengen Visa-Regulierungen verantwortlich. Du hast jedoch die Möglichkeit zum Beispiel an einem Summercamp als Ferienbetreuer teilzunehmen oder z.B. Freiwilligenarbeit im Bereich Tier- oder Naturschutz zu leisten. Hallo Alina, als Alternative zur Farmarbeit empfehle ich dir aktuell zum Beispiel die Freiwilligenarbeit in den USA. Dabei kannst du zum Beispiel auch mit Tieren (z.B. Pferden) arbeiten. Hey, ich würde gerne nächstes Jahr März für 4 Monate in die USA und dort in einer Bar/Restaurant arbeiten ( habe bereits eine Zusage) Ich habe dieses Jahr erst mein Abitur beendet und somit noch keine Ausbildung oder Nachweis dass ich an einer UNI/FH eingeschrieben bin. Die Visaregulierungen der USA sind sehr streng und schließen eine vergütete Tätigkeit leider aus, wenn du dich nicht in der Rolle des Studenten/Azubis o.ä. befindest. Alternativ kannst du aber mit dem Touristenvisum z.B. Freiwilligenarbeit oder Farmarbeit leisten. Hierbei arbeitest du meist gegen Kost & Logis und darfst dich mit dem Visum dann bis zu 3 Monate in den USA aufhalten. ich hätte eine ganz dringende Frage, Sie schreiben ja, dass man für eine vergütete Tätigkeit in den USA eingeschriebener Student bzw Azubi sein muss. Hallo Gila, wenn du als Touristin einreist (mit dem Touristenvisum) kannst du dich bis zu 90 Tage in den USA aufhalten. Jedoch ist es bis heute sehr umstritten, ob die Arbeit (nur gegen Kost & Logis) mit dem Touristenvisum wirklich gestattet ist. 2017 mache ich Abitur und würde danach gerne für ca 6 Monate in die USA gehen. Mich interessiert Rancharbeit sehr. Dennoch habe ich nie etwas gefunden. Meistens wird dies nur für ein paar Wochen angeboten und deswegen wollte ich mich erkundigen ob man Rancharbeit auch für einen längeren Zeitraum machen kann.

Hallo Janine,

eine längere Aufenthaltsdauer ist bei der Rancharbeit leider nicht möglich. Das Touristenvisum, was in der Regel für einen Farmjob ausreicht, gilt normalerweise für 90 Tage und kann bis auf 180 Tage verlängert werden. Alternativen hierzu sind ein Aufenthalt als Au Pair (bis zu 2 Jahre) oder als Intern (Praktikant). Für letzteres musst du jedoch bereits eingeschriebene Studentin sein und mindestens im 2. Fachsemester studieren.

Es gibt durchaus die Möglichkeit, auch nur für 3-4 Wochen Farm- und Rancharbeit in den USA zu leisten. Da Farmarbeit meist nicht vergütet wird, sondern gegen Kost & Logis stattfindet, brauchst du dir wegen deines Arbeitsverhältnisses keine Gedanken machen. Bei einem Aufenthalt von bis zu 90 Tagen ist oftmals für Farmarbeit kein J-1 Visum nötig, da du kein Geld verdienst und somit auch ein Touristenvisum ausreicht. (Dies aber bitte mit der Organisation bzw. der Farm vor Ort gegenprüfen!) Grundsätzlich darfst du aber auch nach dem Aufenthalt mit dem J1 Visum wieder als Tourist einreisen.

Wenn du gegen Kost & Logis arbeiten möchtest, ist Wwoof (World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms) bestimmt das richtige für dich. Für eine Gebühr von rund 30-40 $ registrierst du dich im Wwoof-USA Netzwerk und kannst dann direkten Kontakt zu Farmen aufnehmen. Dort arbeitest du im Schnitt 4-6 Stunden am Tag und bekommst als Gegenleistung Unterkunft & Verpflegung gestellt.

Hallo, ich würde mich für die Farmarbeit in den USA interessieren, doch da ich gelesen habe, dass man nach der Arbeit nur noch 30 Tage frei im Land reisen darf, würde es mich interessieren, ob es noch andere Möglichkeiten gibt,um entweder nur in den USA zu reisen oder um in den USA länger als 30 Tage zu reisen und auf einer Farm zu arbeiten. Ich hoffe der Satz war trotz der Länge verständlich. Ich würde nämlich schon sehr gerne länger als 30 Tage reisen, da ich noch gerne von San Francisco über Los Angeles vorbei an Las Vegas und dem Grand Canyon über die Route 66 bis nach New York reisen würde. Ich weiß, dass das mehr kosten wird, als ich auf der Farm verdiene. Aber aus diesem Grund fange ich jetzt schon an zu arbeiten und wollte dann eigentlich im März 2016 meine Reise beginnen. Hallo Irene, du kannst theoretisch mit einem ganz normalen Touristenvisum wwoofen. Dann musst aber bei der Einreise deutlich machen, dass du als Tourist das Land bereist (nicht arbeitest/ wwoofst oder Freiwilligenareit leistest)… 😉 LG Laura

Der Anbieter dieses Programms ist der Veranstalter interswop mit Sitz in Hamburg ( http://www.interswop.de/ ). Diese Programme gehen allerdings meistens nur über ein paar Wochen. Die alternative Möglichkeit wäre ein Praktikum auf einer Farm zu absolvieren. Allerdings solltest du dann eine Berufsausbildung oder Studium in der Landwirtschaft absolviert haben. Ich suche und suche aber finde so schwer. Ich habe schon 2012 auf einer Ranch in Kanada gearbeitet, allerdings für Kost und Logis. Ich würde dasselbe gerne 2015 in den USA machen, allerdings glaube ich nicht, dass ich mir ein paar Monate ohne jeglichen Verdienst noch einmal leisten kann (immerhin Flug usw.). Weiß also irgendjemand wo ich bezahlte (auch gering) Rancharbeiten finden kann?

Hallo Lisa, die meisten Programme sind leider tatsächlich ohne Verdienst, sondern nur für Kost und Logis. Teilweise musst du sogar dafür bezahlen. Hast du vll. ein Studium/Ausbildung in der Landwirtschaft absolviert? Dann könntest du dich für ein Praktikum auf einer Farm bewerben. Ansprechpartner wär hier zum Beispiel der Deutsch Bauernverband und zwar genau das Refarat für internationalen Praktikantenaustausch. Versuch dort doch mal dein Glück!! LG, Laura

Work and Travel USA

Summer in the states.

Exclusively for University students*, the Summer Work and Travel Programme offers you the chance to live and work in the US over the summer holiday - making new friends, learning new skills and exploring all the US has to offer!

*Final year students are eligible!

Each year, thousands of university students from all over the world travel to the US to work through the summer in resorts, hotels, beach clubs and more - and you're only eligible while you're still at uni!

About the Programme

As long as you're a full time university level student currently studying in the UK, you're eligible! There are some details we want you to know and understand though, so take a minute to look at the info here before you start the process!

Eligibility

• Currently attending university level study at an accredited institution in the UK - OR a UK national studying at university level abroad
• You must be at least 18 at the time of application
• Your course must be at least 2 years in duration
• You must not have a criminal record of any type
• You must be between 18 and 30 years old

Please note: Students who have not yet started university level education (ie those who have finished school/ A levels and are planning on attending university are not eligible for this programme

You're allowed to work for a maximum 4 months between June 1st and September 30th. You can arrive up to a max 5 days before your job starts and remain for a maximum 30 days after it ends - as long as your return home date doesn't interfere with the start of your university term in the autumn.

Allowed types of work

Jobs are allowed in tourism and hospitality only. This might be in a resort or hotel, restaurant or beach club

Can I apply without a job?

You can start the process in advance of securing a position in the US, but we won't be able to submit an application until your job is confirmed and you've provided the details

Why don't you provide job placements?

For 2024, the costs charged by US organisations to provide placements has gone up massively and we don't feel this year that we can ask students to pay the level of fees asked for a short term programme* As a UK student, it's easier for you than almost anyone else worldwide to secure your own position as you don't have the language barrier!

*If this changes we will look at it again and make a decision in the best interests of our students

My summer in Cape Cod was the best 4 months of my life! I made new friends - not just from the US but other international students - AND I got time at the end to travel to NYC and Boston! What's included in the Programme Fees?

• Medical and liability insurance for the duration of your time in the USA

• Processing of all documentation and release to you of the DS-2019 Certificate (this is needed in order to book and attend a face to face interview at the US Embassy)
• 24/7 support from a dedicated CIEE team during your time in the USA

What's not included in the Programme Fees?

• Flights (we're not a travel agent!)
• The US Embassy Interview fee (MRV fee) - this is currently $185 and must be paid direct to the embassy by you when you book your face to face visa appointment

How long does it take to process an application?

Once your job has been verified and your application submitted to the teams in the USA, it normally takes 2-3 weeks for your paperwork to be approved and downloadable from your online account. After that you'll need to book your interview at the US Embassy - wait times for these get longer the closer you get to the summer so get your application in EARLY!

In order to take part in the summer job program you have to meet certain prerequisites. As this is a program specifically tailored toward students, you have to be enrolled in a university and should not be in your final year of studies. You must also fulfill the following requirements:

You are between the age of 18 - 28

You are a student in an EU country

You speak an intermediate level of English

Your employment must take place during your semester break from university

You are a full-time student having completed at least one semester

You have sufficient financial resources of at least $1,000 for the first month

You can repeat your work and travel program up to three times! The J-1 visa application is independent of any former participation in other J-1 programs, such as High School exchange, Au pair or Camp Counselor in the USA.

Register online through the MyIntraxPortal . Please submit your application only if it is complete.

Please send your documents to  [email protected] . Please check the quality/legibility of your documents beforehand. You will find a checklist of all required documents in the MyIntraxPortal.

Once we have received your application, we will invite you to an interview via video in order to ensure your program and visa eligibility. Afterwards you will receive an invoice for the application fee of 300 €.

Intrax will match your profile with U.S. host companies according to program dates and qualifications (i.e. certified lifeguard). Please be open to all regions in the USA. We offer you up to 4 jobs offers if needed.

Once you have found a summer job, you will sign the contract with Intrax, pay the remaining program fees and also sign your job contract with your host company in the USA.

We will send you the DS-2019 form to apply for the J1 visa. A personal interview at the U.S. Embassy is also required as part of the visa application process.

After you have received your visa you can book your flights. We will also send you an invitation for an online pre-departure orientation which will help you prepare for your summer job.

The Work & Travel program is the best route for students who want to spend their summer in the USA. Under the program, they will secure a visa, work (and earn) for 2 to 4 months and travel for the final month. Moreover, the entire Work and Travel USA program operates under the auspices of the USA Department of State.

Basic Information About Work and Travel USA

Securing a job in the USA is not as straightforward as it might appear. The simplest path is for students, for whom the USA has established a Work and Travel USA program. This program is officially designed to expose students from all over the world to American culture and increase cultural diversity across America . The program is exclusively for students, who typically apply through private agencies operating in this field.

These agencies assist participants in finding jobs, handling formalities and issues such as flights, or helping them secure accommodations if their employer does not offer it. Work in the USA is paid, with wages typically ranging from $10 to $16 per hour, depending on the location and the position.

Traveling to the USA as a group with a partner or friends is possible. Work and Travel USA is a summer program, usually commencing in May or June. You work for 2 to 4 months, after which you can travel for up to 30 days, which I highly recommend.

You must have work arranged before you depart for the USA. It is not viable to fly to America thinking that “you will find something to do when you arrive”. You can either secure a job yourself (usually the cheaper option) or have an agency organize it for you (for which you pay extra).

The variety of jobs is broad, with the most common being work in national parks , theme parks, swimming pools, hotels, restaurants or shops. Thus, you can work as a lifeguard, clerk, bartender, cleaner, waiter, or operate a shooting range at an amusement park . It always depends primarily on the candidate’s skills and preferences.

Applicants generally are not required to meet specific job requirements such as being able to operate a roller coaster or making beds in the English style . Knowledge of English at a communicative level is a prerequisite; other work experience is beneficial.

Work & Travel USA

To participate in the Work and Travel program, all of the following conditions must be met:

🔞 Age

You must be between 18 and 30 years of age, although some agencies have lowered the upper age limit to 27.

🎓 Study

You must be a full-time student at a university or college, having successfully completed at least one semester of study.

🗣️ Knowledge of English

You should be able to conduct an interview in English with a native speaker without much difficulty – this implies a communicative level of English proficiency.

📅 Duration of Stay

Your stay should consist of 2-4 months of work + 30 days set aside for travel, with the entire stay starting no earlier than May 1 and ending no later than October 31 .

🛂 Visa

To participate in the program, you must secure a J-1 visa and pay all applicable fees.

If you decide to participate in the Work & Travel program, you should expect to pay between $2,250–$3,000 for a summer job in the USA. The range is actually even wider, depending on whether you find a job on your own or use an agency, the cost of airfare, and the amount of pocket money and travel expenses. Of course, you can recoup a significant part, if not all, of the money through work.

Work and Travel expenses in the USA roughly include the following:

• Fees to the Arranging Agency: $600–$1,000 (depending on whether the agency helps you secure the job or you arrange it yourself)
• Flight Ticket: $550–$850
• Pocket Money: $700–$1,100

Applications for the Work and Travel program are accepted each year, usually by April. I recommend applying early, as this not only brings peace of mind but can also result in savings. Many organizing agencies offer discounts for submitting your application by the end of November or December.

“If it scares you, it might be a good thing to try.”

That sentiment was my driving force when I signed a contract with the Campleaders agency in the fall of 2012, committing to spend the following summer in the USA. Despite my initial apprehension and fear of the unknown, the concept became increasingly enticing. I had ten weeks of work at a children’s camp in Pennsylvania and an additional 30 days reserved for traveling.

I journeyed wherever I had always wanted to go, or simply where fortune and my feet guided me. While working at the camp wasn’t exactly a holiday, it was far from draining. Being a part of a remarkable European-American team, relishing the sun, the summer, the authentic American ambiance, and gaining unforgettable experiences until the end of August were exceptional.

Midway through the experience, once I had formed lasting friendships at camp, my travel plans began to solidify. Our objective was to explore the beauty of western USA. After swiftly purchasing plane tickets, we embarked on the exciting journey of planning, organizing, booking hotels, creating profiles on Airbnb and Couchsurfing, contacting car rental companies , and buying maps.

The final day of work was marked with heartfelt goodbyes. Would I ever see these remarkable individuals again, those with whom I had spent a fantastic ten weeks? Today, I know the answer is yes, as I plan to return to the camp, but at that moment we all stood at the start line of a metaphorical race, waiting for the signal.

And then we scattered to different parts of the USA. The feeling was extraordinary: pure freedom, over a thousand dollars in our pockets, and all of America at our feet. Las Vegas , Grand Canyon , Los Angeles and its numerous cities, San Francisco, and finally, New York. Narrating all the experiences would easily fill a small book.

One thing is certain – my experience was utterly unique. For three months, I immersed myself in a new environment, interacting with different people and speaking a different language, all of which proved to be a refreshing experience. I made friends from all over the world, from Australia to Hungary, and came to value the camp director’s opening week statement, “Forget about your high school friends, your best friends are in this room.”

“I participated in the Work and Travel program twice, once as a lifeguard and the second time as a bellman. With lifeguarding, I knew what to expect, there were no surprises. However, the bellman position was an unknown; the agency only informed me that I would be a bell desk agent.

Ultimately, the job surpassed my expectations, and after the experience, I likely wouldn’t opt for lifeguarding again. One advantage of working in a resort or hotel is that you are part of a team composed solely of Americans. In contrast, as a lifeguard, your colleagues are predominantly students who participate in the Work and Travel program, hailing from Russia, Turkey, Ukraine, and other nations.

Another benefit of working at a resort compared to lifeguarding is the ever-changing crowd, resulting in exposure to diverse types of English (each country has its distinct version of English). On the other hand, as a lifeguard, you interact with roughly the same 40 residents at the pool throughout the holiday season, which can become monotonous. Another significant advantage of resort work is that it is less likely to induce boredom compared to an eight-hour shift of supervising swimmers at a pool.

I don’t wish to paint lifeguarding as a dreadful job. It made for a splendid summer. However, in retrospect, the summer spent at the resort surpassed it in every aspect. Your English definitely improves after those few weeks; after a month, you shouldn’t hesitate to speak, even if you make mistakes. I was pleasantly surprised by how tolerant and helpful Americans are.

For those considering work at a hotel, it’s essential to ascertain whether the role includes parking cars. If it does, you would need an international driver’s license . Without it, you wouldn’t be able to park cars, which would be unfortunate, as it can earn you substantial extra money.

If you’re undecided about traveling alone or with a companion, it truly doesn’t matter as you’ll quickly make many friends. Perhaps it might be better to travel alone; this way, you’re plunged directly into the experience and are forced to use English without depending on another person. Americans are incredibly friendly and naturally drawn towards foreigners. Currently, I cannot recall any additional tasks I had to undertake that an agency wouldn’t have managed for me or instructed me to do.

Having read various articles about the “Want to Come to America” program, I’ve noticed that fear of immigration is a prevalent concern. Frankly, I was intimidated initially, but eventually, I realized it was the least of my worries. The official barely looks up, only asking questions like “how long will you be here” and “what will you be doing,” and within a minute, you’re cleared.

One aspect of the USA that disappointed me was its public transportation. Outside the large cities, public transit is rather lacking. As a lifeguard, I lived about an hour and a half walk from the pool, which necessitated acquiring a bike—though that wasn’t a significant issue.

Apart from that, the USA is an entirely different world, and I would definitely recommend everyone to give it a shot for at least one summer. It’s a priceless, and most importantly, fun-filled experience.”

Daher ist die Kombination aus Arbeiten und Umherreisen in Amerika nur vergleichsweise begrenzt realisierbar. Ein besonderes Visum, das diese Reiseform dennoch möglich macht, ist das J1-Visum. Das Dokument ist an konkrete Bedingungen geknüpft. Das Visum sieht regulär vor, dass Inhaber in die USA einreisen, dann eine Zeitlang an einem bestimmten Zielort arbeiten und im Anschluss für eine wiederum begrenzte Zeit durch die USA reisen. Ausnahmen von diesem Ablauf sind gleichwohl machbar.

Sprachkenntnisse nachweisen

Manche Firmen in den USA, die per Work and Travel Programm ausländische Arbeiter auf Zeit beschäftigen, erwarten vorab, dass ein Mindestmaß an vorhandenen englischen Sprachkenntnissen besteht. Teilnehmer haben unterschiedliche Möglichkeiten, diese Anforderung zu belegen. Für einige Arbeitgeber reicht die Vorlage eines Zeugnisses oder Schul-/Studienabschlusses. Bei anderen, insbesondere besser qualifizierten Jobs, ist der Nachweis des Sprachvermögens mittels eines international anerkannten Testes beizubringen. Populäre bewiesene Sprachtests sind zum Beispiel

• IELTS = International English Language Testing System,
• TOEFEL = Test of English as a Foreign Language oder
• TOEIC = Test of English for International Communication

In jedem Fall sollten Work and Travel Teilnehmer mit ihrem amerikanischen Arbeitgeber oder der Vermittlungsagentur klären, ob eine entsprechende Prüfung oder ein Zertifikat vonnöten ist.

Einmalige Kosten für den Work & Travel Aufenthalt in den USA

Wenn du die USA besuchen möchtest, fragst du dich sicherlich als Erstes: Wie teuer ist der Flug? Dies hängt in erster Linie davon ab, wo du in den USA hinreisen möchtest. Ein Flug ins weit entferne Los Angeles an der Westküste kostet beispielsweise deutlich mehr als eine Reise nach New York. Und wer nach Hawaii möchte, muss noch tiefer in die Tasche greifen. Durchschnittlich kosten Return-Flüge in die USA zwischen 400 und 1.000 Euro – je nach Tarif, Saison und natürlich nach Reiseziel. Hier lohnt es sich, frühzeitig nach Flügen zu suchen und möglichst viele Webseiten mit ihren Preisen zu vergleichen. Auf diese Weise kannst du mit etwas Glück das eine oder andere Schnäppchen fliegen. Und: Lege dich nicht auf ein bestimmtes Reiseziel als Startpunkt fest. Wenn du beispielsweise einige Wochen an einem Ort arbeitest, kannst du das dort verdiente Geld für die nächste Reise verwenden – und Inlandsflüge sind in der Regel deutlich günstiger als Transatlantik-Trips.

Das Nächste, worum du dich kümmern musst, ist das  Visum , damit du in den USA Sommerjobs ausüben darfst. Hierfür ist das J1-Visum erforderlich. Damit bist du berechtigt, beispielsweise in Summercamps, als Au Pair oder auch auf einer Ranch zu arbeiten. Selbst Praktika sind damit möglich. Das J1 Exchange Visitor Visa ist ein sogenanntes Austauschbesuchervisum und nicht zu verwechseln mit einem normalen Arbeitsvisum – ein dauerhafter Aufenthalt in den USA ist damit nicht möglich! Mit diesem Visum kannst du maximal sechs Monate in den USA verbringen. Um das J1-Visum zu erhalten, musst du mindestens 18 Jahre alt sein. In den meisten Fällen wenden sich junge Menschen an einen Veranstalter, der einem bei der Suche nach Praktika hilft und die Visumsformalitäten übernimmt. Dies ist zwar praktisch, nimmt aber noch einmal entsprechend Geld in Anspruch. Günstiger wird es, wenn du dich selbst darum kümmerst, allerdings solltest du damit spätestens drei Monate vor deiner Abreise beginnen – auch die Jobsuche sollte, wenn möglich, bereits von Deutschland aus erfolgen.

Die Kosten für einen Work & Travel-Aufenthalt in den USA

Damit du auch auf Reisen gesundheitlich geschützt bist, kommst du um eine gute Auslandskrankenversicherung nicht herum. Sie kostet im Durchschnitt 30 Euro pro Monat und stellt sicher, dass du auch in den USA medizinische Versorgung erhältst, falls diese notwendig ist. Ein guter Tipp: Wenn du dich nicht während deiner Reise mit laufenden Kosten befassen möchtest, wende dich am besten an einen Anbieter, bei dem du den vollen Betrag gleich im Voraus entrichten kannst. Dies vereinfacht die Verwaltung deines Reisebudgets enorm. Übrigens: Einige Krankenversicherungsgesellschaften bieten gemeinsam mit der  Auslandskrankenversicherung  eine praktische Haftpflichtpolice an. Frage nach solchen Komplettpaketen, um doppelt geschützt zu sein – meist sind es nur wenige Euro mehr, die dir eine ganze Menge mehr Schutz bieten.

Was die Kosten für das tägliche Leben in den USA betrifft, so kannst du dich etwa an den Preisen hierzulande orientieren – es sei denn, der Dollarkurs steht aktuell recht niedrig, dann kannst du vor allem bei Lebensmitteln sparen. Je nachdem, welchen “Luxus” du dir Tag für Tag gönnst, musst du auch dein Budget einplanen. Ein Beispiel: Übernachtest du in einem preiswerten Hostel, so kostet dies pro Nacht zwischen 20 und 25 $. Für Lebensmittel – einfache, selbst zubereitete Mahlzeiten mit Zutaten aus dem Supermarkt – planst du pro Tag zwischen 10 und 20 $ ein. Wenn dir Komfort sehr wichtig ist und du in einem Hotel schlafen möchtest, findest du – je nach Ort – Angebote ab ca. 40 $ pro Nacht. Weiterhin solltest du die Kosten für Transportmittel einplanen. Gerade wenn du die USA bereisen möchtest, wirst du in der Regel Inlandsflüge, Amtrak-Züge oder auch Greyhound-Busse nutzen. Informiere dich schon vorher über die Kosten und Möglichkeiten und vergleiche die einzelnen Preise genau miteinander.

Die oben genannten Kosten sollen dir eine Hilfestellung sein, um deinen Aufenthalt in den USA realistisch zu planen. Im Durchschnitt solltest du etwa 1.000 Dollar pro Monat einplanen – damit kommst du in der Regel erst einmal zurecht. Du solltest dennoch daran denken, dass nicht nur der Reiseaspekt, sondern auch das Jobben im Fokus steht. Most travellers then choose to independently enter the job market when they arrive – sourcing jobs related to their degree or profession. About the visa

Who and for how long

This is the mothership of the J-1 visa family. Unlike the four-month J1 visa for summer camp and ski seasons, this student and graduate USA visa allows you to work for up to 12 months and stay for 14. When you apply, you’ll select a start date that will be printed on your work permit, and you can enter the USA up to 30 days before and after to travel.

You must be an Australia or New Zealand passport holder, be aged 18-35, and either be:

• A full-time third year student currently in a nationally accredited institution of higher education studying on campus, who has completed one year of study before entering the USA. OR
• A recent graduate from full-time tertiary study who has studied on campus, and who has had their application approved and entered the USA within 12 months of completing their degree requirements (final coursework/exam).

In order to apply for your visa, you need to have a US sponsor. That’s where JENZA and our US partner IENA (our trusted sponsor in America) come in to provide all the necessary checks and paperwork.

The J-1 visa consists of an online application and in-person visa appointment at the US Embassy or Consulate in your home country. The visa cost is paid directly to the embassy – see 'What's not included' below for the current fee.

It can take anywhere between two weeks and three months to get your visa approved. We advise applying as soon as possible to ensure you don’t miss the eligibility window.

The ability to move to America without a job lined up is a one-time opportunity. You can also work for the same US employer for the full 12 months, giving you the chance to make your mark – learning from leaders in your field, building your network and putting your resume on the map.

Aside from a few restricted professions (including the medical profession, farming, childcare, domestic help, working in a casino, driving with passengers, starting your own business or being self-employed) you can work in any industry.

If you’re looking to advance your career and find your own USA job, your package will be negotiated directly with your employer and so your earning potential will be uncapped.

If you're looking to do casual work, the minimum wage differs per state, from USD $7.25 to $15.74 an hour. Working in hospitality can reap lucrative rewards in tips, but be aware that some states are legally allowed to use tip money to make up staff wages.

1. Apply online First, check you’re eligible for a J-1 visa conditions in the tab above, pay your deposit, and wait for us to get in touch to arrange your pre-departure screening and initial interview. This is a US sponsorship requirement where we assess your eligibility for the J-1 program, take you through the visa requirements and find out more about why you want to work and travel in the USA

2. Sponsorship application We’ll start the sponsorship process to secure your DS2019 form (Certificate of Eligibility for Exchange Visitor status) which is needed to apply for your visa. This can take up to eight weeks. We’ll then guide you through the J-1 visa application process.

3. Embassy interview We’ll help you arrange and prepare for your in-person embassy interview. Wait times for appointments vary depending on the embassy or consulate you are visiting. You can check wait times here . Be prepared for them to keep your passport for around two weeks. Once approved, you can collect your passport or have it couriered – depending on what you’ve arranged.

4. Land a job (optional) A pre-arranged job isn’t a condition of this visa, but if you’d rather have something lined up while you find your feet, we’ll set you up on the JENZA Job Hub where you can search, apply and interview via video for pre-vetted casual and seasonal jobs.
