Vegan travelling round European city (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

' city ' is the definition. (Geneva is an example) ' vegan travelling round european ' is the wordplay. ' travelling ' indicates anagramming the letters. ' round ' means one lot of letters goes inside another. ' european ' becomes ' E ' (abbreviation e.g. EU) . ' vegan ' anagrammed gives ' genva '. ' genva ' placed around ' e ' is ' GENEVA '.

(Other definitions for geneva that I've seen before include "Lake between Switzerland and France" , "Swiss city/lake" , "Calvin's city" , "Average in Swiss city" , "(famous for its Red Cross)" .)

“Why do you play our Mini Crossword?”

We asked 10 regulars of the indian express mini crossword this question. from avoiding relationship drama to helping them look busy in class, here are their reasons. if you're a beginner, try our live game inside.

travelling round crossword

Not to toot our own horn, but the Express Mini Crossword turns one next month. Started as an experiment for hobbyists, our daily game fusing pop culture and wordplay seems to be creating a subculture of its own, spurring mini-playing groups, classroom activities and a demand for pure crossword events. The free archives may have a hand in this, but we like to think it’s also because of a growing desire for original, interactive learning over humdrum algorithmic habits.

travelling round crossword

Before we up the ante for year two, a look at what our Mini Crossword means to some of its most dedicated players:

‘It jump-starts my brain’

My day kicks off with solving puzzles, playing mini games, and, of course, diving into Wikipedia. It’s the time when the IE Mini gets updated for the day (5.30am) that keeps me waiting until the sun actually rises; otherwise, it would’ve been my first pitstop. Solving has become a ritual now, and I’ve even joined a small community where we ‘subtly’ brag about how quickly we conquer the day’s edition. This morning routine jump-starts my brain for the challenges ahead, even if I end up ‘sleep-working’ through the day.

— Anirudh Arora, 22, Software Engineer

‘All my friends were doing it with me’

Students at Ashoka University enjoy a crossword together in class.

I came across the IE mini by pure chance—I was bored in class, and wanted to do something that’d still look like I was focused and typing. So I looked up ‘mini crossword’ and this happened to be there. I remember so clearly, one of the answers was ‘Orry’, and it was all I could do to not burst out laughing. I was so happy that the clues were culturally relevant too, because…I really don’t care about the Super Bowl or NFL or American English. Soon enough, all my friends were doing the IE Mini with me, and we’d burn through all the archives in class, while travelling, or generally while procrastinating work.

I know it sounds cheesy to say the real crosswords were the friends you made along the way, etc, but doing the Mini together became such a big part of our daily routine. Now that we’ve graduated, I know that solving the Mini (which was great in and of itself) will remind me of them, and that makes it all the better!

— Shreya Khobragade, 21, recent graduate (Ashoka University)

Festive offer

‘Favourite pastime on Metro’

I love puzzles, and for the longest time I had to make do with the New York Times editions, which, let’s be honest, can be too American on a good day. So the IE Mini was a fresh change, with hints and themes that are more relatable, while still managing to get your competitive side out. It’s a favourite pastime in the Metro while I’m on my way to work.

— Anushka Das Sharma, 26, Brand Consulting

‘Ding sound makes my morning’

I play the IE Mini every morning while travelling to work or while taking a tea break. I don’t recall if I have missed the Mini for even a single day in the last two months. When most people my age have a natural instinct to check their Instagram feed or work emails in the mornings, I get the urge to complete the Mini in the first two minutes (or at least try), before moving on to other things. The “ding” sound on a correct word makes my morning!

— Apoorva Doshi, 26, Management Consultant

‘Distracts from traffic (and relationship) drama’

My morning starts in a rush with so many activities scheduled in the first three hours. Starting from my morning walk, to rushing to the kitchen, to getting ready for office, to starting from home at 8:30 am. My husband and I travel to work together, and thanks to the rush hour traffic, it takes a lot of time. Here the Mini comes to my rescue. It’s one activity which is easy, fun, and distracts you from the morning traffic drama.

Seema Kumar plays Indian Express Mini Crossword.

On a lighter note, when I am involved in solving it, it also saves me from getting into any unwanted debate with my husband and the day starts with peace. I noticed that playing the crossword also helps me to focus on my upcoming office meetings. Usually after the crossword, I start making mental pointers with a clean, fresh mind. Missing the IE Mini any day is like missing my morning tea.

— Seema Kumar, 57, Social Development Professional

‘Replays are a balm for a bad day’

I love the written word and games and things that combine the two. Even as a kid, I would find myself interested in word games more than any other genre.

For me, the IE Mini is now a ritual. I wake up around 7-ish every day. Quite literally, the first thing I do is check my phone, open Google Chrome, and the first suggestion that comes up is ‘ indian express mini crossword’. Do I have a choice then? Is there any better way to begin the day than seeing ‘You solved the puzzle in 19 seconds’ flash on your screen? (If there is, please don’t tell me)

girl reading a book in a library

If I’m having a bad morning or have a hectic day ahead of me, and even the crossword gods are not on my side, I’ll replay the game after solving it – so that I can start my day with ‘You solved the puzzle in 5 seconds’, instead of ‘You took 3 minutes to solve this and you know nothing in life’.

— Garima Sadhwani, 24, Journalist

‘Helped me win free beer’

Once I started playing the Mini, I learned a lot of new things. For instance, I didn’t know basics like what our swadeshi handspun cloth (khadi!) was called. (Anurag is not being modest; demo below):

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Indian Express Puzzles & Games (@iepuzzles)

It also helps me kill time during breaks, and even helped me win free beer. I was solving a crossword with some Bollywood-related clues, and the very next day, I attended a Bollywood quiz at a club. There was a particular question I wouldn’t have known if it weren’t for the Mini. I got it right and won a free beer!

— Anurag Roy, 22, Student

‘Like a shot of espresso’

I used to love playing the NYT Mini in college, but my interest dwindled due to its US-centric clues. Discovering the IE Mini was refreshing, as its slangy and Indian topical clues make it more enjoyable. I usually start my morning by playing the Mini. It often feels like a shot of espresso, requiring sharp awareness to achieve a good time on the grid. Sometimes it even feels like a triple shot when I’m stuck in a tricky Bollywood clue.

— Vinay UB, 25, Software Developer

‘Helps when overwhelmed at work’

I have loved crosswords for a long time despite being very bad at them; they’re one of the few word games which focus on semantics and the range of a word’s use instead of letters. I usually pick up the IE Mini when I’m the most overwhelmed during my work, and use that adrenaline to solve it as quickly as possible, though I make sure to savour every second of it. I like that the references are Indian but the scope is not limited to it. I like how you’re including Ruskin Bond’s favorite words . I would love to solve full-sized versions as well.

— Pratyush Pareek, 22, Software Development Engineer

‘Beautiful respite in a busy day’

“I have a standing office and at some time in the morning I sit for a while and solve the IE Mini. This is also the time I’ll have a cup of green tea. Working on the Mini provides a much needed break in my day. I find that most people solve with speed as an objective. I prefer to take some time and read the clues carefully. My favourites are those that are India-specific words and relate to recent news items.

— Kapil Mehta, 55, Entrepreneur

Blair Cobbs outclasses Adrien Broner, scores unanimous decision win: Round-by-round analysis

travelling round crossword

Adrien Broner lost the fight, lost his mouthpiece four times and even lost a tooth during a 10-round welterweight bout against Blair Cobbs.

It was that kind of night for the former world champion, who got knocked down in the second round and dropped a unanimous decision to Cobbs Friday night at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida.

The judges scored the fight 97-91, 96-93, 96-93 in Cobbs' favor.

“On my vision board is very few things. … But one of the main things on my vision board is this fight,’’ Cobbs said during an in-ring interview after the bout. “Blair ‘The Flair’ versus Adrien Broner.’’

There was flair and some power. In the second round, in addition to getting knocked down, Broner lost a tooth, per the Triller TV analysts. But once he was back on his feet, he stayed there.

He landed punches, but got hit with at least twice as many against Cobbs, who was fighting after a two-year layoff. Lauding Broner, Cobbs said, “He survived a lot of big blows after getting knocked down.’’

At times, Broner swung with more ferocity than Cobbs did. But he seemed reluctant to throw those punches – as if fearing how Cobbs might counterpunch – and most of them missed.

Broner’s defeat came three days after he threatened Cobbs with gun violence and used a homophobic slur. Cobbs smiled repeatedly in the ring as he outclassed Broner.

Broner, 34, fell to 35-5-1. Cobbs, 34, improved to 17-1-1.

Round-by-round fight analysis:

Adrien Broner vs. Blair Cobbs: Round 1

Blair “The Flair’’ Cobbs fires a couple of right jabs. Adrien “The Problem’’ Broner still trying to settle in as he takes a jab to the stomach. Cobbs lands a left and Broner is showing no urgency or aggression. Cobbs circling and landing jabs. Broner looks skittish. Cobbs looks dialed in. Cobbs 10, Broner 9.

Adrien Broner vs. Blair Cobbs: Round 2

Broner throws a hard left, misses then… Down goes Broner! Pounded with a left hand. Up on his feet but has lost his mouthpiece. He’s up but ref has to insert the mouthpiece. Cobbs is coming in for the kill. Just assaulting Broner, who finally is fighting back with a jab. Cobbs still firing a flurry of punches. Broner alive and now attacking Cobbs in the corner, but Cobbs smiling and counters. The knockdown might have woken up Broner. Triller TV reports Broner lost a tooth! Cobbs 20, Broner 17.

Adrien Broner vs. Blair Cobbs: Round 3

Cobbs firing away, but Broner standing his ground. Cobbs connects again with a hard left and Broner looks perplexed. Standing directly in front of Cobbs but fists aren’t moving much. Cobbs, meanwhile, throwing punches with regularity. Cobbs 30, Broner 26.

Adrien Broner vs. Blair Cobbs: Round 4

Cobbs out quick behind his right jab. Cobbs connects with Broner’s noggin a couple of times. Broner seems more focused on blocking punches than throwing them. Broner stalking. “A, B! A, B!’’ Crowd chanting for Broner, despite the fact there’s not much to get excited about. Cobbs 40, Broner 35.

Adrien Broner vs. Blair Cobbs: Round 5

Broner moves in, and Cobbs repels him with a flurry of punches. Broner willing to stalk Cobbs, but throwing very few punches. Reducing himself to target. Broner lands a couple of lefts, but Cobbs is far more active – that includes a punishing left. Cobbs 50, Broner 44.

Adrien Broner vs. Blair Cobbs: Round 6

Broner looks tentative, perhaps afraid of what punch he might eat if he unleashes his own. Cobbs hits Broner with a swooping left and keeps up the pace. Broner looks fatigued. Scared? Fatigued? Only clear answer: largely ineffective. Bell rings and the fighters exchange trash talk. Cobbs 60, Broner 53.

Adrien Broner vs. Blair Cobbs: Round 7

Broner leads with his left, then absorbs a left to the face. Broner closes the distance between him and Cobbs, lands a body shot. Broner loses his mouthpiece yet again. Ref stops the action for Broner’s corner to reinsert it. But at this point, a lost mouthpiece is the least of Broner’s troubles. Yet he loses the mouthpiece again! And here comes Cobbs, firing away. Now Broner lands some impressive shots. Broner looking alive. Cobbs 69, Broner 63.

Adrien Broner vs. Blair Cobbs: Round 8

Broner lands a shot and takes two, three, four. There’s the story of the night, unless Broner can quickly change the narrative. Cobbs flustering Broner with his head movement. Closing in on Cobbs is one thing, hitting a moving target is another. Cobbs 79, Broner 72.

Adrien Broner vs. Blair Cobbs: Round 9

Broner stalks again, and yet Cobbs is doing most of the punching. Broner delivers some big shots to the body. Cobbs smiles. Then tags Broner with a flurry of punches. Cobbs 89, Broner 81.

Adrien Broner vs. Blair Cobbs: Round 10

Nice exchange to open the round. Broner aggressive, but Cobbs pushes back. Another lively exchange, with the crowd now chanting, “A-B, A-B!” Cobbs beating Broner to the punch. Broner lands a big right and, once again, Cobbs answers. Has answered all night. Broner loses his mouthpiece again. Wins the round, but not the fight. Cobbs 98, Broner 91.

Rick Ross walks out with Adrien Broner

Broner’s ring walk was delayed but memorable. He was led by Rick Ross, the rapper and music-producing mogul. "The Boss" saluted Don King while holding a mic, praising the promoter and Broner.

Why were Adrien Broner, Blair Cobbs ring walks delayed?

The wait for the Broner and Cobbs ring walks has taken so long, somebody brought a chair into the boxing ring for Don King, the 92-year-old promoter. He spent about 15 minutes on his feet before taking a seat. The Triller TV commentators have exhausted their material but against all odds have filled the dead airtime.

More than half an hour passed from the end of the last fight before ring walks finally began at 10:30 p.m. ET.

Don King gets political

At 92, legendary promoter Don King still possesses the gift of gab. That gab got political during an interview between fights on the card he was promoting.

“We’ve got to work … for the betterment of the sport of boxing and the betterment of people for the world,’’ King said, adding that Israel was attacked by Hamas and Russian president Vladimir Putin “attacked unprovokedly Ukraine.

“And so we got to bring that type of stuff to an end. In boxing you get a return match. But in Ukraine and in Israel, you know, the price you pay is not returnable and it’s not redeemable.’’

He lamented the “thousands of people’’ killed in the wars.

"That’s a lot of B.S.," he said. "We can do better than that, we’re smarter than that."

Michael Hunter def. Cassius Chaney by unanimous decision

Hunter dominated Chaney during a 10-round heavyweight fight that left onlookers befuddled.

What in the heck was going on with Chaney?

The 6-foot-6, 260-pound boxer looked strangely disinterested, and Hunter capitalized by attacking Chaney from start to finish.

Hunter won every round on all three judges' scorecards.

Hunter, 35, improved to 23-1-2. Chaney, 37, fell to 23-2.

Round-by-round analysis:

Cassius Chaney vs. Michael Hunter: Round 1

Michael Hunter throws a couple of jabs to Cassius Chaney’s body. He lunges in for more body work and establishes himself as the aggressor. Still waiting on a punch from Chaney. Hunter 10, Chaney 9.

Cassius Chaney vs. Michael Hunter: Round 2

Chaney’s first notable move: wraps his left arm around Hunter’s neck in a clinch. Yeah, slow start for Chaney. He finally unleashes a big right but misses. Williams unspectacular but solid. Hunter 20, Chaney 18.

Cassius Chaney vs. Michael Hunter: Round 3

So far, Chaney, at 6-foot-6, is unable to capitalize on his four-inch height advantage. Hunter attacking Chaney’s body and also staying on the move. Hunter dictating the fight. Puzzled by Chaney’s passivity here. Hunter 30, Chaney 27.

Cassius Chaney vs. Michael Hunter: Round 4

Hunter making effective use of his left jab, connecting with Chaney’s head and body. Chaney unleashes a right. Not a direct hit, but a sign of life. Hunter pounding Chaney’s body, using his jab and right. Could Chaney be playing rope-a-dope? Lands a crisp right, and just like that Hunter is back on the attack. Hunter 40, Chaney 36.

Cassius Chaney vs. Michael Hunter: Round 5

Hunter comes out firing, and Chaney covers up. At 260 pounds, Chaney is 40 pounds heavier than Hunter, but you wouldn’t know it to this point. Hunter is playing the part of heavy, and still very active with both hands. Hunter 50, Chaney 45.

Cassius Chaney vs. Michael Hunter: Round 6

Hunter firing the left jab again. Chaney fires a left hook that misses, but suggests he may be trying to load up for a knockout punch. Or maybe not. Suddenly Chaney is backed up on the ropes and Hunter is pounding away. Time running out fast on Chaney. Hunter 60, Chaney 54.

Cassius Chaney vs. Michael Hunter: Round 7

Hunter, unrelenting, moving forward as he attacks Chaney with both hands. A minute into the round, the referee notices Chaney is not wearing his mouthpiece. Back to the corner he goes. For some reason, he comes back out for more. Triller TV commentator gets it right: Chaney is a 262-pound punching bag. Hunter 70, Chaney 63.

Cassius Chaney vs. Michael Hunter: Round 8

Chaney comes out, backs into a corner and almost welcomes Hunter’s punches. Which are not punishing punches. Befuddling, to say the least. Hunter might be running out of gas. Not sure Chaney arrived with anything in his tank. Here come the boos. Hunter 80, Chaney 72.

Cassius Chaney vs. Michael Hunter: Round 9

Chaney slow off the stool. But he makes it out for Round 9, which begins with another flurry of Hunter punches – connecting to Chaney’s head and body. Chaney not looking hurt or interested in fighting back. Hunter 90, Chaney 81.

Cassius Chaney vs. Michael Hunter: Round 10

Hunter still firing. Chaney still mystifying. No word of refunds for this one, fight fans. The final bell rings, triggering boos. Hunter 100, Chaney 90.

En_ of an E_a: As Pat Sajak Signs Off, a Look Back at ‘Wheel of Fortune’

The host departs this week after more than four decades leading one of the most watched shows on syndicated American TV.

  • Share full article

A blonde man in a tweed suit and maroon tie poses with a slight smile in front of a colorful sign that read “Wheel of Fortune.”

By Maya Salam

Since 1981, Pat Sajak has anchored “Wheel of Fortune” with an affable and even disposition. On Friday, viewers will see him give the big wheel his final spin, capping one of the most impressive runs in television history — and the longest ever for the host of a nationally syndicated game show.

Sajak, 77, announced his retirement last year. In an interview with his daughter, Maggie, that aired Monday on “ Good Morning America ,” he said he felt “surprisingly OK” going into his final week. The farewell episode was filmed in early April.

“I do know that somewhere along the line, we became more than a popular show, we became part of the popular culture, and more importantly, we became part of people’s lives,” he said. “And that’s been awfully gratifying.”

“Wheel of Fortune,” which debuted in 1975 with Chuck Woolery as its host, became a hallmark of family-friendly programming — a game show where everyone regardless of age or background could watch and play along, with Sajak as its trusted conductor. Perhaps fittingly, Ryan Seacrest, who rose to fame as the good-natured host of “American Idol,” will take the reins from Sajak when the show returns for Season 42 in September.

It remains among the most watched syndicated shows on American TV. As of last year, it was still drawing more than nine million viewers daily, second only to “Jeopardy!” for syndicated shows. In the mid-1980s, more than 40 million viewers tuned in daily.

As Sajak’s era ends, here’s a look back at the show’s legacy, impact and memorable moments.

Sajak’s Run, By the Numbers

50,000: The approximate number of puzzles that have appeared on “Wheel of Fortune.”

$250: The price of a vowel, which has never changed, even as the value of prizes and cash rewards has gone way up.

$250+ million: The amount “Wheel of Fortune” has awarded to contestants in cash and prizes since its syndication debut in 1983. Since the “Million Dollar Wedge” was introduced to the wheel in 2008, three contestants have each won $1 million.

$1,030,340: The amount Autumn Erhard, the biggest winner in the show’s history, took home in cash and prizes.

7,800: The number of different outfits White has worn while at the puzzle board. She went almost 40 years without repeating a single look.

1997: The year the puzzle board went from analog to digital, allowing White to simply touch the monitors to reveal letters. Before the change, it took several minutes, instead of seconds, to reset the letters manually.

2022: The year the puzzle board was upgraded to a single LED screen. Its frame is outfitted with two sensors that activate the screen when White’s hand breaks the plane in front of it.

Five or six: The number of shows generally filmed in a single day, with Sajak and White changing clothes between tapings to make them seem as if they were shot on different days.

Vanna White, More Than a Sidekick

Vanna White, the show’s famous letter-turner, joined Sajak in 1982, and their relaxed, familiar chemistry has been a key part of the show’s enduring success. When Sajak announced his retirement, White, 67, said on social media that she “couldn’t be happier to have shared the stage” with Sajak. “Who could have imagined we’d still be at it 41 seasons later?”

By some accounts, White has walked well over 2,000 miles on that stage, strolling back and forth to reveal letters. (The first letter she ever turned was the “T” in the puzzle “General Hospital.”) She even stepped in to host “Wheel of Fortune” for a few weeks in 2019, while Sajak was away for an emergency surgery.

Over the decades, White has arguably eclipsed Sajak as a pop culture figure, not only becoming a household name, but also being shouted out in a surprising number of lyrics, particularly in rap songs including Nelly’s hit 2000 track , “Ride Wit Me.”

White, however, is not departing with Sajak, though how much longer she will stick with the show remains to be seen. She agreed to a contract extension through the 2025-2026 season, a deal that reportedly included a notable raise .

“When I heard that Pat was retiring, I thought maybe I should retire, too. But I’m not ready,” she told TV Insider last month. “We’ll see toward the end of those two years how I feel. I thank God after all these years that I still love my job.”

In 1980, before she was famous, White appeared on another game show, “The Price Is Right,” as a contestant. Wearing a T-shirt that read “Get Serious,” she was picked for contestants’ row where she was welcomed by Bob Barker, the third longest-running game show host behind only Sajak and Alex Trebek , who hosted “Jeopardy!” for 37 years.

Freewheeling Early Days

In a 2012 interview on ESPN2’s “Dan Le Batard is Highly Questionable,” Sajak shared some gossip that, given the squeaky clean image of the show, was pretty memorable. According to Sajak, back in those early days, he and White would sometimes have several margaritas at a nearby restaurant while they waited for prizes to be brought onto the show’s set in Burbank, Calif., which usually took a couple of hours.

“Vanna and I would go across and have two or three or six, and then come and do the last shows and have trouble recognizing the alphabet,” Sajak said. “I had a great time,” he added. “I have no idea if the shows were any good, but no one said anything, so I guess I did OK.”

What’s Next for Sajak?

Sajak has been “figurine-like and amiably showbizzy” onscreen, as The New York Times television critic James Poniewozik put it last year, presiding over a show that has long been a 7 o’clock staple in homes across the country.

In recent years, though, Sajak has become more politically outspoken off-air, writing occasional columns expressing his conservatism and more frequently sharing his thoughts on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. In 2014, for example, Sajak posted that “global warming alarmists are unpatriotic racists knowingly misleading for their own ends.” (He later said he was joking.) In 2022, a photo of Sajak with Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, a far-right Republican from Georgia, was widely circulated, and criticized , online.

Sajak has also served on the board for the Claremont Institute , a right-wing think tank in California, and is chairman of the board of trustees of Hillsdale College , a conservative Christian school in Michigan, at which Justice Clarence Thomas delivered the 2016 commencement speech .

Sajak hasn’t said whether he will continue with such pursuits, but he is expected to consult on “Wheel of Fortune” for three years. One somewhat surprising gig for Sajak was announced right as his time on “Wheel” concluded — starring in a stage production of “Prescription: Murder” next summer at the Hawaii Theater, opposite longtime Honolulu newscaster Joe Moore. “Prescription: Murder,” a 1968 television movie written by William Link and Richard Levinson, was the basis for the TV series “Columbo.”

In the interview with his daughter, Sajak said he was open to working on new projects, but added that he is “perfectly happy if it just means that I’ll continue with my crossword puzzles and play with grandchildren,” adding, to rib his daughter, “hint, hint, hint, no pressure.”

In the Viral Era

Long before memes, cultural cache was all about catchphrases, and “Wheel of Fortune” had a doozy: “Can I buy a vowel?” — which became a humorous way to convey confusion in general or to request more information of any kind.

Now, “Wheel of Fortune,” which could be considered the original Wordle, gets meme-ified with remarkable frequency on TikTok and Instagram: in puzzle board parodies, which can be generated online , or when contestants fail in hilarious or embarrassing ways.

In 2020, a contestant went viral for guessing “chasing tail” in the bonus round; “kicking back” was the answer. And just a couple of weeks ago, a contestant scanned the puzzle board, clicked his buzzer and yelled out, “Right in the butt!” The incorrect guess has been viewed millions of times as it made its way across social media. The puzzle’s actual answer? “This is the best!”

Adam Hadwin takes first-round lead at the Memorial, but Scottie Scheffler and Xander Schauffele are lurking

With eight birdies, Adam Hadwin shot a 6-under-par 66 to take the early lead.

DUBLIN, Ohio — Adam Hadwin had too many birdies to complain about ending his round at the Memorial on a sour note Thursday. His 6-under-par 66 was enough to lead Masters champion Scottie Scheffler by one shot and give the Canadian hope he is turning the corner at the right time.

Hadwin was among the few who conquered a Muirfield Village course that was soft from rain but no less punishing. He birdied four of five holes toward the end of the first round — after four birdies on the front nine — until missing a 5-foot par putt on the tough 18th.

For Scheffler and PGA champion Xander Schauffele, it was more of the same.

Scheffler opened with two birdies in four holes — he missed birdie chances from 6 feet and 8 feet on the other two — and was humming along until a big clump of mud slowed him on the par-5 fifth hole and led to bogey.

Schauffele returned for the first time since winning his first major at the PGA Championship. His game felt scrappy from tee-to-green. His round was saved by his putter. Schauffele somehow managed a bogey-free 68 to get right in the mix.

“I’m going to go to the range and hit the center of the clubface a little more, find some more fairways and greens,” he said. “I’m happy. I’m happy with how I stuck in there and really happy my short game bailed me out on a day that could have been a lot worse.”

Corey Conners, Collin Morikawa and Ludvig Aberg also were at 68, with defending champion Viktor Hovland among those at 69.

Hadwin and Conners are coming off the Canadian Open, and it’s an important time of the year with only two weeks before the 60-man field for the Olympics is finalized. Each country gets two players (a maximum of four if they’re in the top 15).

Hadwin hasn’t finished in the top 40 since late March, and his world ranking has dropped from No. 44 to No. 59.

Conners is at No 45, while Taylor Pendrith and Mackenzie Hughes are right behind him at Nos. 64 and 65 (Phoenix Open winner Nick Taylor has the first spot sewn up).

“Over the last month I’ve probably played my way ... not out of the conversation, but certainly out of a good position to be in,” Hadwin said. “So coming into this week, I know the questions are always going to be there, but I think for me in particular, it was very important this week to get into the process.”

Scheffler has been in the process for what seems like forever. He already is a four-time winner this year, including another Masters title. He never seems to miss a shot.

But after splitting the middle of the fairway on the 535-yard fifth hole, Scheffler looked down to see a large clump of mud on the top and to the right of his golf ball. It was enough to consider laying up, except a creek runs down the middle toward the green, and he had no idea which direction the ball was going with so much mud on it.

“Hindsight, maybe I could have aimed it down the middle of the creek and just see where it would have went and maybe it goes in one of the fairways,” he said. “But at the time, that didn’t really seem like a good idea.”

So he went for the green and watched it fly 60 yards left of where he wanted — left of the green, left of the water, left of a red hazard line that rarely comes into a play on a hill.

He hacked out of high grass back over the water and over the green, leaving a chip to a tight pin and a green running away from him. He delicately got that to the fringe and made bogey on the easiest hole of the day.

The rest of the round was solid, as usual, ending with an approach to a foot at the 18th, which played as the hardest hole of the opening round.

Schauffele was bogey-free and he’s not sure how. His biggest scare also came at the fifth with a mud ball of his own. This sailed right on him into a bunker, requiring a shot over another bunker to a tight pin. The sand was wet, Schauffele caught too much ball and watched it disappeared over the green. That’s where more water awaits.

“When the ball was in the air, I closed my eyes,” he said. “I wouldn’t call myself religious, but I was hoping that thing was going to be OK.”

He came up short of the water and managed to get up-and-down for par by making an 8-foot putt. He took care of the other par 5s with birdies, added another with a 30-foot putt on the par-3 fourth and only minorly perturbed by missing an 8-foot birdie chance at the end.

“If I didn’t make some of the putts I needed to today, it would have been like a 2 over probably, or worse,” Schauffele said.

Only 25 players from the 73-man field managed to break par, a group that included Rory McIlroy at 70, and that was with four birdies on his last six holes.

Iga Swiatek wins her third consecutive French Open title

Iga Swiatek falls to her knee on the red clay at Roland Garros after winning the French Open women's championship Saturday.

For a few minutes, anyway, it seemed as if Iga Swiatek was a bit off in the French Open final against Jasmine Paolini. Swiatek kept making mistakes early Saturday, got broken in the third game and trailed at Court Philippe Chatrier.

Might a true surprise be in the offing? Could Paolini not only make a match of this, but actually win it? Um, no. Not even close. Not with the way Swiatek can dominate opponents, especially on red clay.

The top-seeded Swiatek quickly recalibrated her wayward strokes and simply overwhelmed Paolini, grabbing 10 games in a row en route to a 6-2, 6-1 victory that gave her a third consecutive championship at Roland Garros and fourth in five years.

The 23-year-old from Poland had to save a match point in a second-round victory against Naomi Osaka last week, but in the five matches after that three-set escape, Swiatek dropped a total of only 17 games.

“This tournament has been pretty surreal with its beginning and with second round, and then I was able to get my game better and better every match,” said Swiatek, who is 35-2 overall at the French Open, including a current streak of 21 straight victories. I’m really proud of myself, because the expectations obviously have been pretty high from the outside. Pressure, as well. I’m happy that I just went for it and I was ready to deal with all of this — and I could win.”

She is the first woman with three trophies in a row in Paris since Justine Henin from 2005 to 2007.

Rafael Nadal waves to the crowd and walks off the court after losing to Alexander Zverev during the French Open

Rafael Nadal loses what may be his French Open finale to Alexander Zverev

Rafael Nadal plans to retire after the 2024 season, but he said he may play the French Open again after losing in the first round Sunday.

May 27, 2024

The 12th-seeded Paolini, a 28-year-old from Italy appearing in her first Slam final, called facing Swiatek at Roland Garros “the toughest challenge in this sport.”

Swiatek also won the French Open in 2020 and the U.S. Open in 2022 and is now 5-0 in major finals.

She added this triumph to those on clay at Madrid and Rome last month, becoming the first woman to win all three events since Serena Williams did it in 2013.

“I never played a player that has this intensity before in my life,” Paolini said. “For me, right now, I think it was the most challenging match I played in my entire career.”

During Saturday’s postmatch ceremony, Swiatek was flanked by a pair of women who each won 18 Grand Slam singles titles, Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova. Evert said before this French Open that she thinks Swiatek could eventually surpass her women’s record of seven championships in Paris.

Paolini, who will rise to a career-best No. 7 in the rankings Monday, had never been past the second round at one of the four most important tennis tournaments until getting to the fourth round at the Australian Open in January. She will play in the French Open women’s doubles final on Sunday with partner Sara Errani against 2023 U.S. Open singles champion Coco Gauff and Katerina Siniakova.

Before the final began, a loud chant of “Let’s go, Jasmine! Let’s go!” arose from Paolini’s supporters in the stands, each wearing a T-shirt in one of the colors of the Italian flag: green, white or red.

After Swiatek got the match’s first point, a fan yelled in French, “Jasmine, it’s not over!”

But Swiatek briefly went through a shaky stretch, failing to convert a break point in the second game, then getting broken to trail 2-1 after 13 minutes when she flubbed a forehand.

It was Swiatek’s seventh unforced error of the afternoon; Paolini had made only one. The rest of the way, those numbers: six unforced errors by Swiatek, 17 by Paolini.

Swiatek, who heard plenty of “Iga!” chants, immediately reset herself and began playing the sort of tennis that put her at No. 1 for nearly every week since April 2022. The instincts and footwork to get to almost any shot. The intimidating, heavy-spin forehands. The prematch strategy and midmatch adjustments.

Once Swiatek got going, there was nothing Paolini could do to slow her down.

“I got broken at the beginning, so it wasn’t maybe perfect,” Swiatek said, “but I think the level was pretty high.”

Absolutely.

She broke at love for 2-all, capping the game with a return winner off a serve at 87 mph. The following game began with a 25-stroke exchange that Swiatek ended with a backhand winner that Paolini did not even try to chase. Now Swiatek led 3-2 and, in a blink, she owned that set and a 5-0 lead in the second.

“You have to push, push, push every ball,” Paolini said, explaining that Swiatek hits shots much sooner and closer to the baseline, while swinging her racket harder, than most other foes. “If not, you have no chance.”

After just 1 hour and 8 minutes of play, Swiatek was celebrating by dropping to her knees behind the baseline.

Soon, she was sitting on her sideline bench and using her phone to snap a selfie while holding up four fingers to represent her haul of French Open trophies. No one would be shocked if that number keeps rising.
