There are four ways to take a Mitad del Mundo day trip from Quito:

Because Mitad del Mundo is just outside of Quito, it’s quite easy to visit on your own using either a taxi or public transportation. Taxis will cost about $15 from central Quito in each direction.

To travel using public transportation, take a public bus to La Ofelia bus station in the north of Quito – many buses travel here, so ask in your accommodation which is most convenient for you to take. In total, it should take 45 minutes – 1 hour, but it will only cost a few dollars.

While you might save a little money taking public transportation, I generally recommend against it if you have just one day to visit . You can’t walk around the park – just walking from the bus stop to the entrance to the park takes over an hour! – so you’ll have to hire one of the local guides that wait at the bus stop anyway .

With plenty of small group day trip excursions and private day trip excursions from Quito to Cotopaxi – they’re available from almost all the city’s tour companies, you’ll have no trouble finding the experience that is right for you.

Quilotoa Crater Lake is actually a volcano – the volcano rim collapsed in on itself centuries ago, leaving behind the stunning blue-green lake you see today. High in the mountains, Quilotoa and the surrounding mountains make up some of the most beautiful scenery in all of the Andes , and the 3-day Quilotoa Loop trek is one of South America’s best hikes.

Quilotoa is in an extremely isolated location high in the Andes, about 3 hours from Quito by car or 4+ hours by bus . It is certainly a drive, but still well worth the visit, even as a day trip from Quito.

Pululahua is a stunning natural destination, and just a few miles outside of Quito, it also makes for a great day trip or half-day trip from the city. A dormant volcano , Pululahua is now considered a nature reserve and protected environment within Ecuador.

It is one of only two inhabited volcanic craters in the world and is home to a unique cloud forest ecosystem similar to that found in Mindo . Popular activities here include horseback riding and discovering the unique flora and fauna of this cloud forest ecosystem, as well as taking in stunning views over the crater’s rim.

You can visit Pululahua independently or as part of a day trip to Mitad del Mundo. Located just a few miles from Mitad del Mundo, it’s an easy addition to your itinerary, and many small group excursions include a visit here.

There are four ways to take a Pululahua day trip from Quito:

To reach Pululahua by bus, travel as you would to Mitad del Mundo. Take one of the many bus lines in Quito that reaches La Ofelia bus terminal, then take the bus that travels to Mitad del Mundo from there. From the Pululahua bus stop, you’ll need to walk about 20 minutes to reach the entrance to the park, which is why most visitors negotiate a taxi to the entrance of the park from Mitad del Mundo.

Just a few miles from Mitad del Mundo, many small group excursions and private excursions of Mitad del Mundo include a stop-off at the overlook into Pululahua’s crater. Alternatively, book a private excursion to spend more time exploring the crater itself, which is a fantastic and fascinating escape from Quito.

Located in Quito’s Valle de los Chillos and just across Cotopaxi National Park from Cotopaxi Volcano, Pasochoa is a long-extinct volcano that is a favorite hiking destination outside of Quito.

While many hikers use Pasochoa as a climb to acclimate to Ecuador’s altitude and practice for harder summits, like Cotopaxi and Chimborazo, don’t let that stop you from visiting Pasochoa if you’re more of a beginner. The hike is doable as long as you’re reasonably physically fit, and though long, it’s totally achievable for beginners.

Hiking the Pasochoa summit is a moderate hike of about 7 hours and 12km in length, with a clearly marked path. Even if you don’t want to make the push all the way to the summit, there are several trails along the mountain you can choose, marked well and identified at the trailhead.

You’ll see the gorgeous mountainous landscape on your hike, including Cotopaxi herself, and feel like you’re exploring Ecuador’s countryside as you pass near small farms and pastures. If you’re looking for the perfect hiking or trekking excursion outside of Quito, Pasochoa is a great option!

There are three ways to take a Pasochoa day trip from Quito:

If you want to hike on your own, take a bus from the Playón de la Marin bus station near the Historic Center of Quito to the town of Amaguaña (about an hour to an hour and a half drive) .

Get off in the main plaza and get one of the white and green pick-up trucks for hire to bring you to the start of the hike. You can coordinate with the driver to pick you up once you’re done, too.

While it is possible to get to Pasochoa and hike in one day without a guide, it would be a lot of bus travel, and I doubt you’d have time to return to Quito before nightfall. If you only have one day set aside in your itinerary, I recommend scheduling a private trek with a guide from Quito .

8. Rucu Pichincha Volcano

Towering over the city of Quito, the Pichincha Volcano is one of the city’s most important landmarks and geographical features . The volcano has several peaks, including the Guagua Pichincha (which means baby Pichincha) peak and Rucu Pichincha (meaning old Pichincha – the older of the volcano’s peaks) peak.

While it is possible to hike both peaks, the Rucu Pichincha hike has gotten much more popular in recent years after the TelefériQo cable car was opened, as the top of the TelefériQo is the best place to start the hike.

Overall this hike is considered moderate to challenging. Both the extreme altitude – 15,413 ft (4,698 meters) at the summit of the peak – and sections of scrambling with a lot of exposure add to the difficulty.

Because the hike starts at the top of the TelefériQo, it’s easy for hikers to get here independently and complete the trek on their own , making this the perfect hike for you if you would like to go without a guide.

However, it is probably a good idea to secure a guide if you can. There are some challenging sections with scrambling required, and the guide can show you the best route for your level of preparation. A small group guided trek is a great, inexpensive option though a flexible, private guided trek of Rucu Pichincha Volcano is another option worth considering if you want to go at your own pace.

Rent a Car:

The quickest and most flexible way to get to these 12 Ecuador destinations is by renting a car and driving yourself. You can rent a car through Discover Car and pick it up at the Mariscal Sucre Airport . Just be aware that driving in Ecuador can be stressful. You’ve got a lot of windy, narrow mountain roads.

Take the Public Bus:

The cheapest way to do most of these 12 Quito day trips is by public bus. This is how I got to Papallacta , Mindo, and Baños. However, not all of these day trips can be done by public bus—Cotopaxi and Antisana are best done with a guided tour.

There are 4 bus stations in Quito where you can catch a bus to take you to these popular Ecuador destinations .

Terminal Terrestre Quitumbe (Quito Sur) – This very clean, well-organized, and safe bus station has buses going to Papallacta, Latacunga (Quilotoa), Banos and most other popular places in Ecuador like Cuenca, Manta, Tena, and the Amazon. The Metro and Trolebus C connect to Quitumbe, making it easy for people staying in Quito’s historic center , San Blas, La Marisal, and La Carolina to get to Quitumbe. ( Map )
Terminal La Ofelia – This small station in the northern part of Quito has buses that go to Mitad del Mundo, Mindo, and Cayambe. Take an Uber or taxi to get to this terminal and give yourself at least 30 minutes to get there. ( Map )

Rio Coca Terminal – This small terminal in the northern part of Quito has buses that go to Cumbaya, where you can switch to another bus going to Papallacta and the Cayambe-Coca National Park entrance. By Car to Cotopaxi:

You need a 4-wheel drive (4WD) car to get to Cotopaxi as the roads are very rough the closer you get to the park and inside the park. You can rent a car from Discover Cars .

By Bus to Cotopaxi:

Getting to Cotopaxi by public bus is a big headache and, in the end, rather expensive . You take a bus to the closest town to Cotopaxi, Machachi. Then you need to get a taxi to the park, which is going to cost you a lot. Finally, once you reach the park entrance, you have to hike for a long time to get to the volcano or pay the taxi driver more money.

Sometimes park officials will force you to hire a guide , saying that it’s not possible to visit the park without one. This is technically not true. But…

I met someone who visited the park this way. She regretted it as it was a big hassle and in the end, it cost her more than a tour would have (about US$100). Because it took her so much time to get to the park, she had little time to see the park’s attractions.

If I still haven’t convinced you not to take a bus to Cotopaxi, go to Quitumbe station for buses to Machachi.

This next Quito day trip takes you to one of the most beautiful places in Ecuador : an emerald-colored crater lake called Quilotoa. There are two ways to experience Quilotoa. The first is to head to a viewpoint overlooking the lake and then hike down to the shore where you can take a kayak or canoe trip on the lake.

The second is to do the ambitious and beautiful Quilotoa Loop, which is a hike around the lake, stopping off at different indigenous villages located along the rim of the crater. The drive from Quito takes around 3-4 hours, and you can hike around the crater or take a boat on the lake.

What can you do at Quilotoa?

Do the Quilotoa Loop – This is a 2 to 4-day hike between indigenous villages around the rim of the lake.
Hike or take a mule down to the shore of the lake.

A car is the best way to get to Quilotoa. It will give you lots of flexibility . You don’t need a 4-wheel drive. It should take between 3 and 4 hours from Quito to Quilotoa.

By Bus to Quilotoa:

It will take 4 hours to get there from Quito and then 4 hours to get back to Quito, making a day trip to be very challenging and tiring. Plus! You need to get to Quitumbe Station in the south of Quito, which can sometimes take 1 hour.

If you’re brave and stubborn or just on a tight budget, leave Quito around 7:00 am.

You’ll need to first take a bus from Quitumbe Station in Quito to the city of Latacunga. Buses leave every 10 minutes and cost US$2.50 . It takes 1.5 to 2 hours to get to Latacunga .

At the Latacunga bus station , take another bus to Quilotoa . It should take another 2 hours and cost between US$4 and $5. Buses run from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm and depart Latacunga every hour. You can also take a bus from Latacunga to Zumbahua and then take a taxi to Quilotoa.

By Shuttle to Quilotoa:

There is a daily shuttle that goes to Quilotoa called the Fantasy Bus . It costs US$25 and leaves at 7:00 am from the NH Collection Quito Royal Hotel . Book your shuttle ticket through Viator .

It’s a 2-hour drive to the hot springs from Quito. The last bit is on windy roads through the mountain. The resort has a big parking lot.

By Uber to Papallacta:

You can take an Uber to Papallacta and back to Quito for around US$100 round trip.

By Bus to Papallacta:

The best ways to get to do this Quito day trip is by public bus or by an organized tour . The bus drops you off close to the market. Tours to Otavalo often included other stops along the way like Cayambe or Cuicocha that make the tours so worth it! However, the car is probably the worst way to get to Otavalo because you’ve got to deal with finding parking on market day.

By Car to Otavalo:

It’s an easy drive along the Northern Pan-American Highway. BUT you’ve got to then find a safe place to park your car. If you’re not going to other places like Peguche or Cuicocha, then leave the car at your hotel.

By Bus to Otavalo:

You can easily catch a bus to Otavalo from Terminal Terrestre Caracelén (also called Quito Norte) in Quito. Buses leave hourly and cost around US$3.50 . It takes 2 hours to get to Otavalo. You can check the bus schedule here .

Give yourself plenty of time to get to this bus station.

The bus drops you off at the bus terminal in downtown Otavalo. The station is just a few blocks from the Plaza de Ponchos , the handicraft market that tourists flock to on Saturdays.

By Tour to Otavalo:

Several Quito tours go to the Otavalo market. The tour below is the one I took and I was 100% happy with it. However, on our way back to Quito, there was a serious traffic jam on the highway and we had to take 2 long crazy detours to get back to Quito. It was quite an adventure and we didn’t get back until after 10:00 pm! Luckily, the tour guide and driver were kind enough to drop everyone off at the door of their hotel instead of at the designated drop-off points around the city.

By Car to Baños:

The fastest way to get to Baños is by car. There’s an easy and direct route from Quito.

By Bus to Baños:

Getting to Baños and then back to Quito by bus in one day is going to be tough. It won’t allow you to see too much. But if you leave at 7:00 and get to Baños at 10:30 am. You have the whole day until the last bus at 6:40 pm . You could probably do the Ruta de las Cascadas and stop at one overlook for views of the city.

If you want to do it this way, take a bus from the Quitumbe Bus Terminal in Quito. It takes 3.5 hours to get to Baños and it should cost US$4.25. Buses leave every 30 minutes from Quito.

From Baños back to Quito, there are 20 buses a day. The last buses are at 5:20 pm, 5:40 pm, 6:00 pm, and 6:40 pm .

About 1.5 hours north of Quito, Cayambe is famous for its picturesque landscapes and the Cayambe volcano. The area is also famous for its traditional bizcochos (a type of biscuit) and cheese, making it a great place to experience Ecuadorian cuisine .

How can you get to Cayambe?

Cayambe is on the way to Otavalo, so it makes for a great stopping off point along the way to the market.

By Car to Cayambe:

Take the Pan-American Highway/E35 to Cayambe. It should take around 2 hours.

By Bus to Cayambe:

To get to Cayambe, take a Flor de Valle bus leaving from Terminal La Ofelia in Quito. You can also take an Otavalo-bound bus leaving from Quito’s Carcelén Bus Terminal.

Cayambe is a great stopping-off point on your way to visiting Otavalo . To get back on the bus to go to Otavalo from Cayambe, just wait on the side of the road and catch a bus passing by on its way to Otavalo. Alternatively, to get to Otavalo, you can catch an Ibarra-bound bus from this bus terminal in Cayambe.

To get back to Quito, take a Flor de Valle bus from the Bus Terminal in Cayambe . The last bus is at 8:00 pm. Buses leave every 9 to 11 minutes, and it should take one hour.

By Tour to Cayambe:

Many tours for Otavalo stop in Cayambe to try some Bizcocho. Check out this list of best Quito tours for more details on tours to Otavalo.

This jampacked tour takes you first to Cayambe to try their famous Bizcoche. Then it’s onto Otavalo for shopping in their famous handicraft market at Plaza de Poncho. Distance from Quito: 33 kilometers (20 miles) from Quito (historic center) to Pintag (the town where the Reserve starts). By car, it should take 45 to 60 minutes to get to Pintag.

9. Cayambe-Coca Ecological Reserve Day Trip

Distance from Quito: If you’re using the Papallacta entrance, then it’s 75 kilometers (46 miles) from Quito (historic center). By car, it should take 1 hour 20 minutes to get there.

One of the best day trips from Quito for hiking is to the Cayambe-Coca Ecological Reserve. The Reserve is known for its diverse ecosystems including an Alpine forest and a rainforest. It’s so big that it stretches across four provinces. The area is great for birdwatching and offers opportunities for hiking and nature appreciation. Quito’s third-highest mountain, Cayambe Volcano, is located in the reserve.

What can you do at Cayambe-Coca Ecological Reserve?

How do you get to Cayambe-Coco Ecological Reserve?

There are two entrances to Cayambe-Coca National Park.

For those wishing to climb the volcano , you need to get to Ruales-Oleas-Bergé Refuge , which is 27 kilometers from the town of Cayambe on a rough road that requires a 4WD. A cooperative might take you there from Cayambe but I hear they charge US$60. The Refuge is a basic mountain lodge that you can stay overnight in and have meals.
The best entrance point for those who just want to hike is 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) from the back of the Papallacta Hot Spring Resort . This is how I accessed the Park. Here the trails range from easy to challenging and from a few hours to multiple days. You’ll find forests, lakes, waterfalls, and the páramo landscape. Read my guide on getting to Papallacta by bus .

If you leave Quito in the morning by either bus or car, you easily complete many of the hiking trails that start at the Papallacta Hot Springs. Some trails take 1 to 3 hours while other trails take 6 to 8 hours to finish.

There are no tours that specifically do just the Cayambe-Coca Ecological Reserve. But if you do a Papallacta Hot Springs Tour, you can probably forego the hot springs and do a short hike at Cayambe-Coca Park, instead.

For those of you wanting to extend your day trip from Quito, here are a few places to stay in and near the Cayambe-Coca National Park.

10. Reserva Ecológica Cotacachi-Cayapas Day Trip

Distance from Quito: To get to Cuicocha Lagoon, it’s 112 kilometers (70 miles) from Quito (historic center). By car, it should take 2 hours 45 minutes to get there.

The Cotachi-Cayapas Ecological Reserve is known for its cloud forests, diverse wildlife, and beautiful landscapes. It’s a great destination for nature lovers and hikers. The highlight is the breathtaking Laguna de Cuicocha (Guinea Pig Lake)—a volcanic crater lake with 2 islands poking out of the water.

What can you do at Cotachi-Cayapas?

Hike around the rim of Laguna de Cuicocha – The Cuicocha Loop is a 12.5-kilometer (7.7 miles) hiking trail around the whole lake. It can take 3.5 to 5 hours to complete.

How to get to Cotachi-Cayapas?

The best ways to get to Cotachi-Cayapas are by car or by an organized tour . It’s doable by bus but it’s harder than the other ways.

If you want to do the 12.5-kilometer (7.7 mile) Quilotoa Loop Trail around the whole lagoon, then a car or bus is the only way to get to Cotacachi. For the bus, leave VERY early in the morning.

By Car to Cotachi-Cayapas:

Take the Norte Panamerican Highway/E28B to Otavalo. Then it’s another 15 kilometers to Laguna de Cuicocha.

By Bus to Cotachi-Cayapas:

From Caracelen Bus Terminal in Quito, take a bus to Otavalo Bus Terminal . Then take another bus to the town of Cotacachi or Quiroga . Buses from Otavalo are frequent. From Cotacachi or Quiroga take a camionate (Pickup truck shared taxi) or a private taxi to Laguna Cuicocha. Taxis to the lagoon from Quiroga are cheaper than from Cotachi.

To get to places in the Intag Valley , you can take a bus from Otavalo at 7:45 am, 10:30 am, 1:00 pm, 2:30 pm and 5:30 pm.

By Tour to Cotachi-Cayapas:

Otavalo + cayambe + cuicocha lagoon.

Hacienda San Isidro De Iltaqui ($$) – Staying in this beautiful colonial hacienda is like stepping back in time 200 years. It’s located on an organic farm just 5 kilometers from Cuicocha Lagoon. 11. Mitad del Mundo Day Trip

Distance from Quito: 33 kilometers (20.5 miles) from Quito’s historic center. By car, it should take 45 minutes.

Is standing at the Equator on your travel bucket list?

You can easily visit the Equator as part of your Quito itinerary . Mitad del Mundo (Middle of the World) is a park that marks the equator and commemorates the Franco-Spanish scientific expedition that identified its location.

What to do at Mitad del Mundo?

Take a photo of the monument marking the equator
Visit the Intiñan Site Museum
Climb to the top of the monument for panoramic views
Try to balance an egg on the head of a nail – it’s supposed to be easier at the equator

How to get to Mitad del Mundo?

The quickest way to get to Mitad del Mundo is by car or tour. If you take the bus, it will take you twice as long to get to the park.

By Car to Mitad del Mundo:

You can easily drive to Mitad del Mundo. It takes at least 45 to 60 minutes .

By Bus to Mitad del Mundo:

You can take a bus to Mitad del Mundo from Terminal La Ofelia .

Alternatively, from the historic center , a blue bus goes to Mitad del Mundo from Avenida Mariscal Sucre . Buses in Quito do not have numbers on them. Look for the destination on the front of the bus.

Better yet, you can take a blue bus from the Panecillo to Mitad del Mundo. It will take 1.5 hours, though.

By Tour to Mitad del Mundo:

A lot of Quito tours go to Mitad del Mundo, so you have plenty of choices. The first tour on this list is the cheapest (US$19) and only goes to Mitad del Mundo. This is the tour I took. The second one combines Mitad del Mundo with other Quito attractions . It’s great for those who have only one or two days in Quito.

This inexpensive Quito tour only stops at Mitad del Mundo . The entrance fee of US$5 is included in the tour price. You can then walk around the park on your own for around 2 hours. It’s an easy and convenient way to get to Mitad del Mundo. The tour picks you up at designated spots around the city. This is how I got to the Middle of the World.

(2) Tailor-Made Quito City Tour (Includes Mitad del Mundo)

DURATION: 8 hours | RATING: 5/5 (250/258 5-star reviews) | BOOK YOUR TOUR: Viator

This highly-rated tour kicks off at the Teleferico . Then it heads to the Basilica and Old Town before ending at Mitad del Mundo . This is one of the top tours in Quito .

12. Pululahua Geobotanical Reserve Day Trip

Distance from Quito’s historic center: 38 kilometers (24 miles) from Quito’s historic center. By car, it should take 50 – 60 minutes.

An easy and quick day trip from Quito, Pululahua Geobotanical Reserve offers a unique and breathtaking experience as it is home to one of the world’s only inhabited volcanic calderas, providing visitors with stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes. The reserve boasts rich biodiversity, featuring diverse flora and fauna, making it a haven for nature enthusiasts and bird watchers.

Warning: the crater is often covered in clouds so it’s sometimes difficult to see it.

What can you do at Pululahua Geobotanical Reserve?

Hike 1.7 kilometers (1 mile) down a steep trail into the crater (90 minutes)

Visit the Temple of Sun, a re-creation of an Inca temple

How to get to Pululahua Geobotanical Reserve?

The best way to get to Pululahua is by car or bus. Not many tours have Pululahua on their Quito itinerary .

By Car to Pululahua:

Drive to the town of San Antonio. You’ll pass by Mitad del Mundo. There’s a parking lot at the Reserve.

By Bus to Pululahua:

First, take a bus from Terminal La Ofelia or a public bus from the historic center to San Antonio. The bus will pass by Mitad del Mundo (Middle of the World). Get off here and then walk over 1 kilometer or take a taxi to Reserva Geobotanical Pululahua. It will take 1.5 to 2 hours to get to the lookout point of the crater from the historic center.

By Tour to Pululahua:

A few tours combine a trip to Pululahua with other Quito attractions:

(1) Mitad del Muno + Pululahua Crater

When should i visit quito.

The temperature in Quito is the same all year round (a high of 66-68 degrees Fahrenheit and a low of 47-49 degrees Fahrenheit.) Even though it’s at the equator, the city is at such a high elevation that it never gets hot.

Quito has two rainy seasons :

March – May with April being the rainiest
October to November

The best time to visit Quito is from June to August as these are the driest months .

How long should I spend in Quito?

I would spend at least 3 days in Quito . In that way, you can see the major attractions, get a feel for the city without feeling rushed, try some of its delicious Ecuadorian food , and explore a less touristy neighborhood.

An overview of my recommended Quito itinerary:

Day 1: Wander around the historic center and do this walking tour (any order).

Day 2: Explore a less touristy neighborhood of Quito with this street food tour . You can read about my review of the Quito street food tour here. End the day at Panecillo.

Day 2: Take the cable car to Pichincha Volcano and stand on the equator at Middle of the World with this tour .

How can I get from the airport to my hotel in Quito?

There are several ways to get from the airport to your hotel in Old Town, La Carolina, or La Mariscal:

Airport taxi – There’s a taxi desk in the arrivals hall at the Quito airport. Pay the desk for the taxi ride. The price is fixed based on what zone you’re staying in. They accept credit cards. They will then arrange a taxi driver for you. I’ve used this service twice. (US$30)
Arrange an airport pickup with your hotel in Quito. This is what I did when I first arrived in Quito. (US$30)
Public Bus – You can take a bus from the airport to 3 bus stations in Quito (Quitumbe Terminal, Rio Coca Terminal, and Carcelén Terminal) (US$2).
Private Transfer Service – You can arrange one through Get Your Guide (US$40 for 1 person or US$45 for 2 people) or Viator (US$36 for 1 person or US$40 for 2 people)
Rent a car – You can book your rental with Discover Cars . (US$77 – $100/day)

Is Quito safe?

For most visitors, Quito is a safe place to visit as long as you follow a few precautions.

At night, take a taxi or Uber to get around in most parts of the city including the historic center. It’s best to avoid walking around at night in the historic center or San Blas.

The historic center has problems with pickpockets and scam artists that target tourists.

Crime has increased in Quito recently. It’s safer than Guayaquil and some coastal areas. According to statistics, it’s got about the same level of crime as Houston, Texas.

Where can I find an ATM in Quito?

There are 3 major banks in Quito :

Banco Pichincha – Transaction fee is US$4.50
Banco Guayaquil – It has the cheapest transaction fee of US$1.50

I had the best luck getting money from this ATM at the Santa Maria Supermarket in the historic center and from Banco Pichincha in La Mariscal . The weird thing was that the ATM at Banco Pichincha in the historic center never worked for me.

Where can I get a SIM card in Quito?

Three mobile phone companies sell SIM cards and data:

I used Claro in Ecuador and got my SIM card from a phone shop in the historic center. According to the Claro website , this is the rate for prepaid SIMs:

US$5 for 15 days and 5 GB
US$10 for 30 days and 12 GB
US$15 for 30 days and 20 GB

The phone shop I bought my card from was across the street from the Santa Maria Supermarket .

However, for convenience , you can get an eSIM instead. You don’t have to worry about changing SIM cards. Use Airalo to buy your eSIM. They have eSIMS for many different countries around the world. Their prices are pretty good and the quality of the connection is usually excellent .

Quito, formerly known as San Francisco de Quito, was founded on the ruins of an Incan city. In 1978, this huge city was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Quito has some of the best-preserved historic centers. This city has a rich pre-Colombian history and has a lot to offer to tourists. Thanks to its close proximity to the equator and its elevation of 9,350 ft above sea level, Quito has a fairly constant climate.

1. La Mitad del Mundo

This enormous trapezoidal monument commemorates the exact location where Charles Marie de la Condamine, an explorer of French origin, calculated the earth’s equatorial line in the 18th Century. The name translates to “the middle of the world.”

La Mitad del Mundo is Quito’s tourist Mecca. Visitors come here to take pictures at the equator, where the northern and the southern hemispheres meet. This popular destination is always crowded, so be prepared, especially between June and September.

There’s an elevator that goes up to the top of the monument. This allows you to have great views of the surroundings. The great thing about the 30-meter-tall monument is that it’s accessible to everyone.

The monument is 26 km north of Quito so you can easily get here by road.

2. Parque Bicentenario

This modern park is the second largest in Quito, covering an area of 200 acres. Having only been inaugurated on 27th April 2013, Parque Bicentenario is located in the area previously occupied by the Old Mariscal Sucre Airport. The park is at 2,800 meters above sea level.

The former runway is what makes the park’s design so beautiful. It has now been painted and converted into a recreation site which comprises play structures for kids and lanes for cycling.

Within the park, there are more than a thousand trees as well as a man-made pond.

3. Quilotoa Lagoon

Breathtaking sights await you at the Quilotoa Lagoon.

This lagoon was formed as a result of the collapse of a now-extinct volcano whose 3-kilometre wide (and 250m deep) crater was filled with water. The volcanic mountain collapsed about 600 years ago after a catastrophic eruption which was followed by a period of dormancy. The lagoon waters are green in color, thanks to the dissolved volcanic minerals. The surface of the lake is located 3,500m above sea level

Situated about a 3-hour drive from the southwestern end of Quito, Quilotoa is a common day-trip destination that is growing in popularity.

4. Cotopaxi National Park

The massive Cotopaxi National Park it the most-visited national park thanks to its spectacular setting; it has rocky mountain trails, sweeping plains, and glassy lagoons. The national park covers an area of 33,393 hectares.

5. Iglesia de La Compania de Jesus

The church’s Spanish name directly translates to “The Church of the Society of Jesus.” It’s usually referred to as la Compania by the locals. According to most observers, this church is the most beautiful in South America. This Church and most of the nearby buildings were constructed around 1741. In 1781, Iglesia de la Compania de Jesus was damaged in a fire and later by an earthquake, in 1882.

La Compania is well-known for its large central nave which well decorated using wood carvings, gilded plaster, and gold leaf.

This church makes for an ideal day trip for those looking to get in touch with their spiritual side.

6. Pasochoa Forest Reserve

This forest reserve features a vast range of trees, ferns, orchids, and a wide variety of bird species.

The main reason for the reserve’s preservation is the uneven surface, which can make accessibility a challenge. The forest was declared a protected area in the year 1982 and later declared a Wild Life Refuge in 1996.

Today, the Pasochoa Forest Reserve is one of the few remaining original Andean Forests. The Pasochoa is run by Fundacion Natura which is in charge of all the conservation projects and research projects.

7. Pululahua Volcano Crater

Pululahua’s last eruption happened about 2,500 years ago and resulted in a crater that is full of fertile soil. This makes the crater one of the only two that is cultivated by its 120 inhabitants. In the middle of the 34 square kilometer crater lays a lava dome which is 500m high. The dome is covered in lush cloud forest vegetation and offers excellent views from the summit.

Pululahua in Quichua means “smoke of cloud of water.” The name came about due to the fog that covers the crater every day at around noon. Technically, it never rains in Pululahua so the fog provides the water for the crops grown here.

The best time to visit is in the morning hours before the fog rolls in. This way you’ll be able to enjoy the fantastic views and take pictures.

On the 28th of January 1966, Pululahua was declared a Geobotanical Reserve. It is home to more than 2,000 species of birds, mammals, flora, and exotic insects. This peaceful paradise, located 17 km to the north of Quito, is a favorite destination for both tourists and botanists.

8. Capilla del Hombre

Any culture vulture who is visiting Quito needs to make their visit complete by making a day trip to La Capilla del Hombre. This building was designed by Guayasamin and its construction began in 1995, ending in 2002 after his death.

This chapel is a purposebuilt museum that contains more than 4,500 artifacts that depict the history of the people of Latin America.

9. Santo Domingo

The driving distance from Santo Domingo to Quito is 132 kilometers. The town is also referred to as Santo Domingo de Los Colorados. This fairly large town is one of the newer towns in Equador.

10. El Panecillo

El Panecillo is a hill that resembles a small loaf of bread, hence the name Panecillo. This hill is about 3,016m above sea level and is commonly used as an observation area as tourists get a 360-degree view of Quito.

On top of this hill, there is a majestic sculpture of La Virgen del Panecillo (or La Virgen de Legarda). The 41-metertall aluminum statue of Virgin Mary was inspired by the Virgen de Quito. The statue is the largest of its kind in the world; it was built using 7,000 pieces of aluminum.

The best time to visit the Bread Loaf Hill is in the morning when the sky is cloud-free so as to get clear views. From here, you can see as far as the Cotopaxi Volcano.

11. La Mariscal

The Mariscal neighborhood is also referred to as Gringolandia.

This area is the epicenter of Quito’s tourist scene. Even though there are not as many attractions here, Mariscal has a reputation for having numerous useful amenities such as banks, laundromats, accommodation, bars, international restaurants, clubs, travel agencies, dance schools, and shops which are a major tourist magnet. All these are concentrated within a few blocks so you can easily hop from place to place.

La Mariscal is considered an entertainment center for both locals and tourists alike. The neighborhood runs from Orella Avenue in the north to La Paria in the south.

12. Mindo Protected Reserve

This protected reserve is located only 90 km from the city. It takes tourists about 2 hours to get there by road.

When you get to the Mindo Protected Reserve, expect to see more than 25 species of birds, butterflies, frogs, and dozens of orchids. Bird lovers can get to feed the birds as they enjoy the beautiful butterfly gardens. The reserve is an excellent spot for bird watching.

The main feature of this reserve is the Mindo Cloud Forest that covers an area of 19,200 hectares. This cloud forest was home to the Yumbo-Nigua who were great merchants operating between the coast and the highlands.

13. Otavalo Market

The Otavalo Marketplace is one of the largest in Latin America. A visit to this market will allow you to browse the colorful stalls for artisan souvenirs. The locals in this village have perfected their weaving skills and they make products for sale at this market.

This beautiful waterfall is located exactly 3 km from Otavalo. The Peguche Waterfall is 18m tall and is fed by the waters of River Peguche which originates from Lake San Pablo.

Before heading to one of its multiple restaurants for delicious traditional Ecuadorian food, make sure to visit the Tsáchilla communities, whose inhabitants have bowl haircuts smoothed down with bright red achiote dye. The Mashpi private reserve has more than 1,200 hectares where 70% of the land is primary forest and is part of the Chocó Andino bioregion, which runs from Panama through Colombia and reaches northern Ecuador. At Mashpi Lodge you can see crested guans, capuchin monkeys, howler monkeys, tayras, tarantulas, glow-in-the-dark foxfire mushrooms, and translucent green frogs, among other animal species.

The reserve has more than 11,000 species of plants, 900 birds and 350 amphibians. The Chocó Andino Region is one of the most biodiverse places on the planet. The Mashpi Lodge is a beautiful boutique hotel , and was named one of National Geographic Unique Lodges of the World , located in the heart of the Ecuadorian Andean Choco, just 2 hours and a half from the city of Quito.

The main mission of this eco-resort built in the middle of the jungle is to conserve the Andean choco cloud forest, which is located 950 meters above sea level. The reserve is located in an area where the cloud forest meets the jungle, which allows it to have a very extensive diversity of fauna and flora. It is home to several endemic species such as the Mashpi frog and the Mashpi magnolia among others.

Quilotoa Lake is one of the most beautiful lakes in the country due to its bright turquoise color. The lake is located in a crater of an ancient volcano that collapsed after an eruption more than 600 years ago The hike is quite step down and back up. The best views are from the top, with a hike around the entire rim.

The lagoon is located just 2 hours and a half from Quito, which is why it has become one of the most popular landscapes to see in Ecuador.

Mindo is nestled in a beautiful cloud forest, known for its endless greenery and rich biodiversity. The two main attractions in Mindo is its waterfalls and adventure tourism.

There are many waterfalls to hike to in the jungles around Mindo, with the most popular waterfall of Cascada La Reina. You can easily spend the whole day visiting a handful of waterfalls.

Mindo is also a popular day trip for is its adventure tourism including mountain biking, canyoning, tubing and horse riding. No matter what activity you chose in Mindo you will find yourself in the deep green jungle surrounded by bustling wildlife and beautiful birds.

If you do not have a car you can take a tour from Quito to Mindo .

If you are in Quito you must visit the Mitad del Mundo or “The Middle Of The World” monument. There are two monuments, the real one is located outside the city in Calacali, while the most famous one is located in the northern part of Quito.

The famous monument is well set up to receive tourists as a touristic attraction with museums, shops, restaurants and it has an entrance fee. The other, smaller monument is just in the middle of a square in Calacali with nothing interesting surrounding it.

The Quito Zoo is located north of the Quito airport, 45 km northeast from Plaza Grande and 35 km southeast from Mitad Del Mundo. It is an easy day trip, or half day trip accessible by both car and bus. At the zoo you can explore over 120 species of Ecuador’s vastly diverse wildlife.

Some of the zoo’s more famous animals include the famous Galapagos Tortoise, the rare Andean bear and Jaguars. You can enjoy animals representing all of Ecuador’s different ecosystems in one spot!

I am always a fan of zoo’s, not only for the conservation efforts, but your ability to see a whole countries animals and more, even if you do not have the chance to visit the whole country. Even if you do visit every region of Ecuador, many of the animals are nearly impossible to spot in the wild.

It is important to note that biodiversity and natural resources are given protections under the Ecuadorian constitution, so do not destroy nature in seeking a peek at a wild animal.

The Quito Zoo is open Tuesday to Friday from 8:30AM to 5:00PM; Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holidays from 9AM to 5PM; and is CLOSED on Mondays.

Tickets cost $3 for children, $3.50 for students, $4.50 for adults, and $2 for seniors.

Located 100 km from Quito are the Termas Papallacta , with many natural hot springs. The termas are located in a small potato farming town high in the mountains, sitting at 3,300 meters above sea level. It is the perfect relaxing day trip from Quito, accessible by car, bus or tour .

The expansive facility is very nice and clean, with lockers to keep all your things safe. It features a range of temperatures in different hot spring pools, from burning hot to comfortably warm. You also have the option to dunk yourself in the freezing water from the neighboring river. Just a few hours in the hot springs and I felt like a million bucks, and a bit dehydrated, so drink up that water!

If you feel like spending more time at the hot springs, there are also cabins available to stay over night, along with a general spa within the compound. Turn a day trip into a relaxing and natural spa weekend!

From the entrance of Termas Papallacta you can continue on into the Cayambe Coca Ecological Reserve . A note of caution though, there is no other exit connected to this road, so every trip is round-trip. In the mountains there is lots of fog and one lane curves along the dirt road, so be careful!

We entered the park in the afternoon, which I do not suggest, as the combination of high surrounding mountains, fog, and earlier sunset made for a less than fun drive to the exit.

The Pululahua Geobotanical Reserve is the home of the Pululahua Volcano. It is a collapsed volcano with great biodiversity and unique landscape. Interesting fact, it is the first national park in Ecuador established in 1966.

Located right outside the Pululahua Geobotanical Reserve is the Museo Templo del Sol. It is a cool and interactive look at the life and religion of the Incas. The entrance fee is $3.

Cotopaxi is one of the best things to do near Quito, you can also reach the summit but you need special equipment and a longer training since it is 5,897 meters above sea level. If you are not interested in climbing to the top of Cotopaxi, you can enjoy its majesty from the lagoons or from the José Rivas refuge, located at 4,864 m above sea level. The hike up to the refuge can take up to one hour and the views from there are super worth it.

Keep in mind that the high altitude and the hike will be easy even though it is a short distance. Although you can summit the peak of Cotopaxi special gear and training are required. There is also horseback riding, mountain bike paths and plenty of beautiful photo opportunities if you just drive to the base.

Otavalo is one of the most common day trips from Quito as it is only two hours north from the city. It is known for its world-famous craft market and surrounding nature. In the market you will find textiles, handicrafts, artwork and an endless array of woven and embroidered goods. My favorite activities in Otavalo are the Peguche waterfall, the San Pablo lake, and the Cuicocha Crater Lake.

The Yanacocha ecological reserve covers an area of 964,000 hectares of Andean vegetation at an altitude of around 3,200 meters above sea level. It is located right on the western slope of Guagua Pichincha, and has 4 marked hiking trails to see the great biodiversity of fauna and flora. The entrance costs $6 for foreigners and $3 national tourists.

The Yambo Lagoon, also known as the “Enchanted Lagoon”, is a very popular destination less than two hours from Quito. The lagoon is a green color that contrasts with the bluish horizon and the beautiful mountains that surround it. Some of the activities that you can do in the Yambo Lagoon are boating, hiking, horseback riding, camping, photography, and swimming.

The Maquipucuna reserve is the home to the wild Spectacled Bear or also known as the Andean Bear. It is a reserve located a two hour drive from Quito on the way to the city of Mindo. I recommend you spend at least two days and one night to be able to see the Andean bears and the different birds that live in the Ecuadorian Choco Andino.

The Ilinizas Reserve has an extension of 149,900 hectares and its altitude begins at 800 meters up to 5,263 meters. Here you will find various types of landscapes including tropical forests, warm valleys, extensive meadows and Andean páramo. The most visited areas in the reserve are the Ilinizas volcanoes, the Cunuyacu waterfall and hot springs.

The Cubilche lagoons are located in the Imbabura province, belonging to the Ibarra canton, in the La Esperanza parish, approximately 19 km from this town. The water is bluish in color and feeds itself from natural springs as the lagoons do not have external tributaries. It is fairly cold with average temperatures right about 9°C and it is at 3,800 meters above sea level.

The Red Lagoon or Pangaladera Lagoon is located in the extinct Cubilche volcano, hidden among the forest. The feature that most attracts attention is its red color from the small plants that cover the water, a unique moment in the middle of nature, walking through the eucalyptus forest.

The Cayambe-Coca National Park is a protected area located in the northeast of Ecuador, in the provinces of Imbabura, Sucumbíos, Pichincha and Napo. It covers more than 400,000 hectares and includes the mountains of Cayambe, Saraurcu, Puntas and Reventador.

The national park covers a wide range of altitude, from the Cayambe volcano (5,790 meters above sea level) to the humid forests of the Quijio rivers, passing through the humid páramos, the Polylepis forests, scrub forests and cloud forests.

The Antisana National Park is a protected area in the Andes mountain range, between the provinces of Napo and Pichincha. The Antisana volcano has an elevation of 5,758 meters above sea level. The park was initially created as the Antisana Ecological Reserve in July 1993, and in 2021 it was upgraded to Antisana National Park. The park has a great variety of flora and fauna.

The Chakana reserve is located in the provinces of Pichincha and Napo, in the Pintag community southeast of Quito, on the western slopes of the Antisana volcano. It covers an area of 5,010 hectares, has a cold and temperate climate with an average temperature of 3 °-7°C.

Some animals that you can see in the reserve are the Andean condor, Spectacled Bear, and Mountain Tapir.

The Chakana reserve was created in 2011 with the name of Antisanilla reserve, but due to confusion with the Antisana Ecological Reserve now Antisana National Park, in 2019 the name was changed to the Chakana reserve (Hacienda Antisanilla).

The Fire Waterfall located 15km from Sangolquí is an extraordinary place, where you can marvel at the beautiful nature. In the cascade of fire you can enjoy eucalyptus trees, blackberry, cedar, and guayacán, among others.

As for the wildlife, you can see hummingbirds, blackbirds, foxes and the almost extinct Quito Rocket Frog (Hyloxalus jacobuspetersi). The fire waterfall also has a spiritual connection since ceremonies are performed by shamans during each solstice.

7 Best Day Trips and Multi-Day Trips from Quito, Ecuador

In this blog post we’ll detail some of the best day trips from Quito, the capital city of Ecuador. If you’re heading to Ecuador soon, you’re probably trying to put together your own itinerary. Ecuador is a much smaller country compared to its neighbours, Peru and Colombia . Thanks to Quito’s position within the country, the city provides an excellent base for some fantastic day trips.

Most of the locations below can be visited as a day trip. However, some of them are actually better done as multi-day trips. We will highlight the locations where we believe that going on a multi-day adventure is the best option. That way you can decide which places you might like to visit for longer, and this will hopefully help you to adjust your itinerary to fit everything in.

7 Best Day Trips and Multi-Day Trips from Quito

We’re going to start the list with locations that are closest to Quito, before adding destinations that could be more of a multi-day trip rather than a simple one-day adventure.

Hopefully this list will help you decide whether you’d rather visit certain places for a day or longer when you’re planning your Ecuador itinerary .

1. TeleferiQo and Rucu Pichincha

Probably the easiest day trip you can do from Quito is to take its popular cable car, the TeleferiQo, up to Pichincha volcano.

The TeleferiQo runs from the northwest edge of the city centre all the way up to a lookout called Cruz Loma on the east side of Pichincha volcano. It only opened in 2005 and it’s considered one of the highest cable cars in the world.

Once you’ve enjoyed the views during the nearly 20-minute long gondola ride, you can then wander around the mountainside and admire the views of the surrounding volcanoes. There’s a perfectly positioned swing, where you can quite literally swing above Quito. You can also just take a stroll around the area or, if you’re a big hiker, you can climb Rucu Pichincha. Make sure to do the climb during the morning and only if you’ve already acclimatised.

If you decide to summit Rucu Pichincha, then it’ll be a full day trip. However, if you just want to enjoy the views from Cruz Loma, then the TeleferiQo is the perfect half-day trip from the city. This also means that you’ll have some time to explore other parts of Quito too, such as La Floresta neighbourhood or La Carolina Park. 2. Mitad del Mundo, Quito’s Equator Line

Another popular and easy day trip from Quito is to visit Ciudad Mitad del Mundo (Middle of the World City). Mitad del Mundo is the best place to visit the equator line, since it’s the only location in the world where it runs through a big city.

Located around 25km to the north of Quito’s centre, Mitad del Mundo is home to an impressive monument dedicated to the equator as well as a big, bright yellow line marking the ‘equator’.

Now, it’s worth noting that this yellow line isn’t actually the real equator. Thanks to modern GPS, it turns out that the initial measurements taken back in the 1700s were off by about 240m. Today, there’s a site just north of Mitad del Mundo called Intinan Site Museum where you can see the ‘real’ equator line. Although, as it turns out, this one also might be slightly off.

Nevertheless, both sites are well worth a visit if you want to learn a bit more about Ecuador and the equator line. Not to mention all the creative photos you can take standing between the two hemispheres.

Located about 90km to the north of Quito, Otavalo is one of the most popular day trips from the city.

Situated at 2,532 m (8,307 ft) above sea level and surrounded by impressive volcanoes, lakes, and waterfalls, Otavalo has a lot to offer its visitors. However, the main reason many people come to Otavalo is the indigenous market, which is considered the largest of its kind on the continent.

The majority of Otavalo’s population is made up of indigenous people, who are famous for their textiles. You can browse through a large variety of handmade items from clothes, accessories, and jewellery to other souvenirs. The market is open every day, although the main day is Saturday, when it expands beyond Otavalo’s Plaza de Ponchos.

During your visit, you’ll notice that a lot of Otavaleños will be wearing their traditional attire. Women are normally dressed in beautifully embroidered white blouses and dark skirts. Their main accessories are gold beaded necklaces and red beaded bracelets. You’ll see men in white, calf-length trousers, poncho’s and a hat.

We actually spent 2 days in Otavalo but most people would only visit as part of a day trip. Depending on how much time you have in Ecuador, if you can, we recommend spending at least one night in Otavalo.

4. Quilotoa Lake

One of the furthest places you can visit on a day trip from Quito is Quilotoa Lake (Laguna Quilotoa). It has to be one of the most beautiful crater lakes in the country. Located about a 3-hour drive to the south-west of Quito, just to the west of the city of Latacunga, Quilotoa is the westernmost volcano in the Ecuadorian Andes.

Its 3 km wide and 250m deep caldera lake was formed after the volcano erupted in 1280. The lake has a beautiful green and turquoise colour which comes from the dissolved volcanic minerals from its past eruption.

The most popular way to visit Quilotoa Lake is by joining a day tour from Quito. On the tour, you’ll normally get the chance to descend down to the shore of the lake, where you can rent a kayak or just enjoy the scenery. The tours normally include a few more stops along the way, such as at viewpoints and local markets.

If you’d like to spend a bit longer at the lake and would like to do some hiking, then you can plan a multi-day trip to Quilotoa. That way, you can complete the Quilotoa Lake rim hike which would take you the majority of the day.

In addition, if you love trekking then you can consider completing one of the best multi-day self-guided hikes in the country: the Quilotoa Loop. This 3 to 5 day long hike will take you through the stunning Ecuadorian countryside before finishing at the crater lake.

5. Mindo Cloud Forest

Another favoured location to the north of Quito, where you’ll find plenty of both local and foreign visitors, is called Mindo Cloud Forest. The small village of Mindo is located about 1,250 m (4,100 ft) above sea level in a lush valley to the northwest of Quito.

The valley is home to the Mindo-Nambillo Ecological Reserve, and within the reserve is the beautiful Mindo-Nambillo Cloud Forest, covering over 19,000 hectares. The cloud forest and reserve are known for their biological diversity and countless natural attractions.

You can chase waterfalls along the popular Ruta de las Cascadas, which leads you to 7 stunning waterfalls through the cloud forest. Mindo is also a popular place amongst bird watchers thanks to the rare bird living here called the Cock of the Rock. You can visit a butterfly sanctuary if bird watching isn’t your thing, go on a chocolate tour or do something more adventurous, such as a night walk in the cloud forest.

There are plenty of different types of one-day tours offered from Quito . You can book onto some dedicated hiking tours or more adventurous ones that offer zip-lining and tubing. However, if you want to make the most of your visit, we recommend spending at least a night or two in Mindo.

6. Cotopaxi National Park

One of the most popular places to visit in Ecuador is Cotopaxi National Park. It is the second largest national park in the country and also home to the second highest peak: Cotopaxi volcano. The nearly symmetrical cone shaped active volcano is definitely the park’s main attraction.

Located to the south of Quito, there are quite a few tours offering day trips from the city. There’s plenty to do in the park, from hiking up to José Rivas Refuge on Cotopaxi volcano itself at 4,864 m (15,958 ft), or even going up higher to the glacier at 5,000m (16,400 ft) above sea level. You can mountain bike down the side of Cotopaxi too, which is definitely an activity you’ll never forget. In case you’re after something a bit more relaxing, you can just explore the park on horseback.

Whilst taking a day trip to Cotopaxi is perfect for those short on time, if you can, we recommend planning a multi-day visit. There’s so much more to do in the national park, from climbing other dormant volcanos such as Pasochoa or Rumiñahui to even summiting Cotopaxi itself.

7. Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve in the Amazon Rainforest

Visiting the Amazon Rainforest in Ecuador is definitely not a day trip. In fact, it’ll take almost a full day just to get to your accommodation. However, if you’re visiting Ecuador, then you really cannot skip spending a few nights deep in the Amazon Jungle.

Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve is located in the northeast corner of the Ecuadorian Amazon. It’s a biodiversity hotspot with hundreds of species of birds, fish, reptiles, amphibians, and mammals calling it home. There are also over 12,000 species of plants in the reserve.

You can normally choose between a 3-day, 4-day or 5-day tour depending on how long you can spare. If you’d like to get the most out of your visit, we recommend booking either the 4 or 5-day tour. This way you’ll be able to do all the main activities Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve has to offer.

Activities normally include sunset canoe rides, swimming in the lagoon, and nightly canoe rides to spot wildlife such as tarantulas, snakes and caiman. You’ll also have the chance to hike through the jungle during the day and at night. Most tours will also offer a visit to one of the indigenous communities to learn about their way of life, and you’ll also get to meet their shaman.

If you only have time for one multi-day trip from Quito, then the Ecuadorian Amazon Rainforest should be high on your list.

Final Thoughts on Day Trips and Multi-Day Trips from Quito

As you can see, there are plenty of trips you can go on from Quito. Each of them is unique and it would be hard for us to pick one favourite. However, if we had to choose, then we would probably say the Amazon Rainforest and Cotopaxi National Park. We visited both as multi-day trips and are so glad that we didn’t rush either. The memories we made from these places are some of our fondest from the country.

Although the market is open 365 days a year from 7 a.m.–6 p.m., try to go on Wednesday or Saturday when the most vendors, and the biggest crowds, are there. Take your time, compare items at different booths, then gently haggle (it’s expected) to get the best prices.

5. Cotopaxi National Park

At an elevation of over 19,000 feet, Cotopaxi is the highest active volcano in Ecuador and one of the highest in the world. A 2-hour drive from Quito, this magnificent snow-capped peak is one of Ecuador’s most iconic landmarks and a must-see day trip.

While climbing activities have been halted due to recent eruptions, as of this writing, the Cotopaxi National Park is open each day from 8 a.m.–3 p.m. Enjoy hikes tailored to your needs, beginner-to-expert-level horseback rides, and biking. Spot Andean gulls, hummingbirds, and even wild horses at Limpiopungo Lagoon, a stunning glacial lake at the base of the Cotopaxi Volcano.

Secret Garden Cotopaxi offers a variety of one-of-a-kind accommodations, from glamping to “birdhouses” to hobbit homes. Three meals are included daily, as well as assistance with the booking of many activities offered in the area.

6. Quilotoa

An off-the-beaten-path destination well-worth visiting is Quilotoa Lake , a 3-hour drive from Quito. The 2-mile-wide lake was formed after the summit of an active volcano collapsed following an eruption in 1280, which is considered the most violent on the planet in the last 1,000 years.

The unusual emerald green tint of the water is due to a high concentration of volcanic minerals. The color changes throughout the day with the movement of the sun.

Dress warmly for this excursion because, at an elevation of 13,000 feet, the weather at Quilotoa is quite chilly. Breathtaking views and fantastic photos are guaranteed from a lookout platform above the lake.

Walk down to the water only if you are in great shape. Don’t be fooled by the easy half-hour trek along the sandy path on the way down. The hike back up is extremely challenging due to the steep slope and thin air from the high altitude.

Extreme sport enthusiasts flock to Baños, the adventure capital of Ecuador. Think ziplining, class-IV-plus white-water rafting, canyoning, rock climbing, and bungee jumping off a bridge over a roaring river.

Since Baños is a 3-hour drive from Quito, most of these exciting excursions are not possible on a day trip. However, this recommended tour is well-worth taking. The views on the way, including a quick stop for pics of the Cotopaxi volcano, are breathtaking.

High above the town at La Casa del Arbol, you’ll hop on a swing and go way out over the valley for a thrilling view of Tungurahua Volcano. Then, get up close and personal with the powerful Devil’s Cauldron waterfall. It is an absolute beast!

6 Best Day Trips from Quito

Ecuador’s capital, Quito , is an exciting place to visit. At 2,850 meters (9,350 feet) above sea level, it is the world’s second highest capital and the only one on the equator. It’s got one of the best preserved old towns in all the Americas. After exploring the capital and all it has to offer for a few days, it’s time to explore the surrounding environs on day trips from Quito. Perhaps you’ll shop until you drop (or run out of money) at South America’s largest outdoor market. Or maybe you’ll spend a day absorbing the scenic grandeur of the Andes or photographing birds and butterflies in a cloud forest. The day is yours; make the most of it.

6. Papallacta [SEE MAP]

You’ll pass through several villages and pretty scenery as you make the hour-long drive from Quito to Papallacta, high in the Andes Mountains. Papallacta, noted for its hot springs, is situated at an elevation of more than 3,290 meters (10,800 feet), but the drive there takes you even higher, to just over 3,960 meters (13,000 feet). There’s not too much to do in Papallacta, except soak in the natural hot springs, which are said to have healing powers. Lake Papallacta is located here; it used to supply drinking water to Quito, but an oil spill from a nearby pipeline contaminated the water. If you’re lucky, you might see wildlife such as opossums, weasels and spectacled bear.

5. Mitad del Mundo [SEE MAP]

Since Ecuador is named after the equator that runs through it, you’ll want to visit the site where it all begins. Ciudad Mitad del Mundo, 25 km (16 miles) from Quito, is home to a national landmark that is the exact location of the equator. The 30-meter (98-foot) high monument also honors the Franco Spanish Geodesic Mission that placed the equator here in 1736. The site also contains the Museo Etnográfico Mitad del Mundo, which is devoted to Ecuador’s native people. Ancient astronomers had placed the equator cross point at Catequilla, now an archaeological site, which is at 0° latitude and the correct location.

4. Quilotoa Lake [SEE MAP]

Eight hundred years ago, Quilotoa, a mountain high in the Ecuadoran Andes erupted, spewing volcanic ash as far away as the Pacific Ocean. When it was over, a two-mile wide caldera remained. It filled with water and today is known as Quilotoa Lake. If you’re an experienced hiker, you might want to walk the six miles around the caldera rim. Be forewarned, the hikes can be sandy, steep and challenging in places. A shorter hike involves going from the viewpoint down into the crater, where primitive camping is available. The lake is almost 3,960 meters (13,000 feet) in altitude, so you may want to pace yourself.

3. Mindo Cloud Forest [SEE MAP]

If you’re looking to spend a day communing with nature, Mindo Cloud Forest is the place to go, particularly if you’re into nature photography, especially birds. This nature reserve, where it’s possible to look down upon the clouds, is home to more than 450 species of birds, plus an astounding variety of butterflies, mammals, reptiles and orchids. As you navigate the forest path you’ll also come across several beautiful waterfalls. Mindo is famous for its chocolate making, so you might want to buy some to snack on while you’re hiking through the forest or photographing birds. Because protecting the environment is so important, visitors are asked not to use spray cans of insect repellant, but rather an atomizer to protect the ozone layer.

2. Otavalo Market [SEE MAP]

Visiting the Otavalo Market, two hours by bus from Quito, can be hazardous to your nerves. You’ll have to decide whether to snap up all the great native handicrafts or snap pictures for your memory book. Of course, it’s possible to do both. That’s what makes South America’s largest outdoor market so much fun. The colorful market is a good place to buy handmade textiles as well as items made locally from wood, silver and ceramics. The Plata de los Ponchos, as the market is known locally, is open daily, but Saturdays and Wednesdays, in that order, are the best days to go.

1. Cotopaxi [SEE MAP]

Cotopaxi is famous for being the second highest mountain, at 5,897 meters (19,347 feet) in Ecuador. It’s also known as being an active volcano that is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire volcanic chain. The Cotopaxi volcano erupted more than 50 times since 1738. The most recent eruption began in August 2015 and lasted until the following January. The mountain is home to an equatorial glacier, a rarity in the world. Cotopaxi is visible from Quito on a clear day, but how much more fun to make a day trip there to see a mountain that was considered sacred by pre-Columbian peoples.
